About the author

Joseph Fasano is the author of the novels The Swallows of Lunetto (Maudlin House, 2022) and The Dark Heart of Every Wild Thing (Platypus Press, 2020), which was named one of the "20 Best Small Press Books of 2020." His books of poetry include The Last Song of the World (BOA Editions, 2024), The Crossing (2018), Vincent (2015), Inheritance (2014), and Fugue for Other Hands (2013). His honors include the Cider Press Review Book Award, the Rattle Poetry Prize, and a nomination for the Poets' Prize, "awarded annually for the best book of verse published by a living American poet two years prior to the award year."

Fasano is an educator focusing on innovative learning strategies. He is the author of The Magic Words (TarcherPerigee, 2024), a collection of poetry prompts and educational tools that help unlock the creativity in people of all ages.

Fasano's writing has appeared in The Times Literary Supplement, The Yale Review, The Southern Review, The Missouri Review, Boston Review, Measure, Tin House, The Adroit Journal, Verse Daily, PEN Poetry Series, American Literary Review, American Poetry Journal, and the Academy of American Poets' poem-a-day program, among other publications. I might be able to put a down on a small house if I received a commission for how many times I've mentioned this book to friends and acquaintances or purchased Fugue as a special gift. Half joking aside, this book has changed the game for several friends of considerable talent and accomplishments. Fasano has resurrected my faith in contemporary poetics. His present and future recognition are and will be proof of his formidable talent.

A collection which will be on my shelf when I am an old woman reaching for Rilke and find the brillance of Fasano instead.

Fasano's poems are built from lyrical language that swings along with images that are more than capable of haunting one's dreams, and the best ones have an almost eerie ringing of past greats brought back to life--especially in the end of this collection, though the poems are clearly contemporary, there's something of an echo of Gerard Manley Hopkins and his thunderous rhythms. The caveat here is that the best of the poems come in the end of the collection--though I wandered through the first half of Fugue for Other Hands, the second half left me breathless and re-reading, and most of the poems I'll return to are in the last third of the book. For readers who'll devour it whole, that's fine, but if you're reading the work and beginning to think about putting it down, I'd suggest you skip ahead, and perhaps even read backwards, poem by poem. The ones in the back aren't to be missed.

So, although I'd argue that sound is sometimes prioritized over meaning in some of the early poems, I'd still truly recommend the work as a whole, and I'll certainly be willing to check out more of Fasano's work.

Joe Fasano's first book is a good first book, but it suffers from what many first books suffer from--a chronic playing of poetic strengths, which leads to a kind of tonal monotony; recurring gestures and image; moments when ambition and language are not in sync. Still, Fasano is a formidable poetic talent, and we see in these poems the spark of the poet he's becoming.

What a truly special collection. I actually had to read it twice in order to really appreciate its depth and dark beauty, and I'm sure that a third and fourth read would bring forth even more understanding and awe. I'm positive that the meaning behind several of these works likely went over my head, but they still made me feel some type of way for sure. Here's a few lines excerpted from different poems throughout the book, just to show a sample of Joseph Fasano's poetry/writing style:

"they must have thought we knelt in praise, at last, that we were bowing to the watcher in the skies, my god, and not the earth, the curse, the commonness in us."

"The moon, however you curse it, the moon will slip into your quarters with its kind, like wolves inside a children's ward."

"Through anger, through his winter, my father pulls me closer to the wreckage of his patience, a sleep he cannot fathom, and whispers through my hair:  What promise have you offered? What rapture have you witnessed with the eyes the fire gave you, with the flesh the fire spared?"

"..and to sing with them, the way a child touches everything, with the hand of his murderer."
