Charming cozy series with magical life all around the town. I enjoy the light atmosphere in Cahoon's mysteries... it's less about the murder and more about how all the characters deal with the situation. I loved the addition of the newcomers in this installment. I can't wait to see what happens with the surprise at the end!
This series is becoming my comfort series. I love how determined Mia is and how she has amassed her found family around her (in additional to her Gran). It's amazing how Mia is able to run her academy, her planner job at the local lodge and her food delivery service. Her passion for food and making people fell better with her kitchen witch abilities shines through so much and I was so excited to see her path to her powers progressing in this book! I also love her and Trent; they care so much for each other and their pets and its so soothing to see their interactions. I also love how she works with human law enforcement and how they have come to an understanding and I love the mix of the magical and mundane in various aspects of this book. I was SHOCKED by the ending of this book, it had me on the edge of my seat!
And wow I am SO exited to the next one!!
Thanks to the publisher for a free copy; my thoughts and review are my own.
fun and ghostly read that will have you entertained. Did I mention there is a really cute maltese and a baby purple dragon..... If that doesn't make you want to read a cute, witchy, animal cozy, I don't know what does....
This was my first book in this series, so I was a little lost on who the familiars were.... but it did not detract and I was soon caught up on whos who.
You can't go wrong with Cahoon. Pick up these cute gem for when you just want to feel good.
Wow! You are going to want to be prepared for a fast-moving story with lots of constantly changing parts. This adventure was very hard to put down as things were constantly in motion, and as we got answers to one situation, another one popped up to keep things moving! Mia is getting ready to take her Kitchen Witch exam and, hopefully, be initiated as a Kitchen Witch. Can she get all the studying done, set up her potions lab, do her job, set up a Halloween party for the coven, which is pushing her to join, and cater two engagement parties for Christina and Levi? Just in case that's not enough, there is an inspector coming out to figure out why Trent has received Cerby as a hellhound since he's turned over his power to Levi. When the inspector is found dead on Trent's property, will anyone actually think he's a suspect? Can Mia spare time to help Mark solve the murder while she juggles everything else going on in her life? You will definitely want to try to keep up during this delightful romp! Thanks to #Netgally, #Kensingtonbooks, and the author for an opportunity to be charmed! #SevenSecretSpellcastors #KitchenWitchMysteries #LynnCahoon #bookreview #bookideas #retiredreader
We return to Magic Springs, Idaho, shortly before the important All Hallows Eve. Mia is busy with her kitchen witch training and will be completing her apprenticeship with Grans, and could join the coven on Halloween. First, she must pass her Kitchen Witch exam. She is also still working at the Lodge, now with a new boss, and while Abigail manages her catering business, Mia’s Morsels, it is important she remains involved in the overall focus. Add to that, Mia is planning not 1 but 2 engagement parties for Christina and Levi.
Mia’s boyfriend, Trent’s familiar Cerby, a cute little Maltese, is truly a hellhound with powers that need refinement, but he has flunked his training at the werewolf camp and has come home with a new friend. To make matters worse, an investigator from the National Office of Magical Creatures has been sent to Magic Springs to check out some irregularities regarding Trent and the pup.
Before the investigator can start his full investigation, he is found dead, floating in a river behind Trent’s cabin, with pawprints around the body. Soon, Trent and Cerby become top suspects, and Trent’s brother Steve arrives to take control of the situation. This doesn’t sit well with Chief Mark Baldwin or Mia. Mark knows he’s going to need Mia’s help with the magical case, and she is determined to use her powers to clear both Trent and Cerby of killing the bothersome investigator.
The characters Ms. Cahoon has crafted for this series continue to grow throughout this story. Joining them are some fascinating new characters that bring entertaining and intriguing moments to the book. Mia has evolved by leaps and bounds since book one, and Grans always surprises me. Trent and Levi’s brother Steve arrives to shake things up, and Abigail has hired Finley Shiley to replace Christina as she and Levi start a new adventure in Oregon. Cerby’s new friend is extraordinary and fun.
Ms. Cahoon’s imagination brings the world of Magic Springs to life in wonderful ways. So much happens within the pages of this book, but it is never overwhelming; it truly flows magically between the main plot and each subplot.
Investigator Alfred Howard was a peculiar, diminutive man who had more connections in Magic Springs than anyone knew, leading to a variety of suspects. Mia and Mark teamed up to follow every clue while juggling everything else going on in their lives. I was completely taken by surprise when the killer was revealed, and Mark even commented to Trent that “your girlfriend has a knack for being exactly where she shouldn’t be at the exact wrong time” as they were surprised too.
The school is such a marvelous setting, and in every book we learn new things about it. There are some changes coming, and who knows what the Goddess and Ms. Cahoon have planned for Magic Springs and its delightful residents and familiars. All I know it I don’t want to miss a minute of it.
Seven Secret Spellcasters is a sensational addition to the Kitchen Witch Mystery Series. The charming characters draw you into their lives with ease for a delightful lighthearted foray of mystery, romance, humor, and magic. Ms. Cahoon never disappoints. I highly recommend the entire series!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Kensington Cozies and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
It is almost Halloween, and the families and businesses of Magic Springs, Idaho, are gearing up for the celebrations. For trainee kitchen witch Mia Malone, it is always a busy time of year, but it seems as if everything is happening at once! She has a new boss at the Lodge, her first witch exams to study for, her grans is about to get engaged, and all while Mia’s boyfriend Trent and his familiar, Cerby are being investigated by the National Office of Magical Creatures! When a body is found behind Trent's home, local police chief Mark Baldwin asks Mia to help with the witchy side of the investigation! Juggling the victim’s clandestine assignations, a new friend for Cerby who just happens to be a dragon, her studying, and two engagement parties means Mia has her work cut out for her. If she can't save Trent, then who can?
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Kensington Publishing, Kensington Cosies, but the opinions expressed are my own. Book 7 in this brilliant series was a wonderful read, and I loved it. There is such a lot going on, not all of which is sorted, that I can't wait for book 8. Mia is one of my favourite cosy crime protagonists, and this is easy to highly recommended.
“ Besides her witch’s training, Mia has a lot on her plate with her catering business and cooking school in the Idaho town of Magic Springs. Wow! This one has to be my favorite of the whole series so far. I loved Mia working with Mark so much. The mystery was just that a big mystery I couldn’t figure out until it was revealed, I didn’t want to put this one down. The ending was awesome and I cannot wait to see what is coming next to Magic Springs. I highly recommend this book and this whole series.
Mia has a lot on her plate—and now there’s a dragon involved?! As more and more characters enter the story, I keep asking myself: are they allies or enemies? Honestly, there are still a few I don't trust, and that constant tension keeps things so compelling. I'm really intrigued by the buildup to what could be a major war, and I seriously cannot wait to see where the story goes next.
With all the training Mia’s been through, I’m left wondering—is she truly ready for what’s coming? I guess we’ll find out... and I’ll definitely be along for the ride!
I received a complimentary copy of the book from Kensington Publishing through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Mia Malone is juggling more balls and magical creatures, human or otherwise, than ever before in Seven Secret Spellcasters in this latest addition to Lynn Cahoon’s Kitchen Witch mystery series. Mia continues to work at The Lodge to keep her catering business afloat, where she has handed off the reins to her boyfriend Trent’s mother, Abigail. As this series has progressed, the magic in Magic Springs, becomes more and more pronounced, no more so than in this entry where Cerby, Trent’s hellhound in the body of a Maltese, adopts a young, purple dragon named Buddy. Magic Springs truly is accurately named. I really appreciate how the characters and relationships in this series are growing and evolving over time. I enjoy the basic note of truth in the relationships, especially between Mia and Trent. I’m less sure how I feel about how busy this book is which finds the series evolving from mostly character and plot driven with magical overtones to a series that is truly magic forward. I would also love to see Mia back in her kitchen running Mia’s Morsels and the storylines not quite so magic forward. I will be interested to see how the series progresses from here.
I do recommend this book, especially for fans of Lynn Cahoon and those who appreciate paranormal mysteries. 3 1/2 stars rounded up to four.
Family and friends are as much a at the heart of this mystery as is the magic. For that reason, I don't think this is a stand alone read. Understanding the relationship of the many characters both to each other and to magic is important. The is a complex story line with shades of Waverly Place where only one gets the family magic yet in a unique twist the other gets a gift from the goddess. I think that reading previous books will help you understand how that all plays out. As I have been speaking of family and friends, Mia and Trent, have quite a magical circle of friends and family as well as non-magic friends. You get a real LOL moment when one of the non-magicals call her a witch, never knowing that she is a kitchen witch. The story circles around Trent and his cute Maltese Hellhound. Simply saying Maltese and Hellhound in the same sentence you know the book will have plenty of whimsy especially since we are mixing in a dragon. While it is no doubt that Cerby can make more than her share of mischief, there are other forces at play that put murder and Trent in the spotlight. As someone with a mischievous little dog, it is very easy to picture her in that role of Cerby. Admittedly, this book took a hard left out of the gate and I expected another character to find themselves of the wrong side of murder but the mystery was just a good with the author's twist. I don't like to spoil in reviews so I won't tell you whether or not the first annoying one changes course or not. With more than one wedding been introduced in previous stories as well as a possible cohabitation, you know we are going to get some romance. Maybe, we will even have some romance with a twist you won't see coming. This entire story feels like a bit of a potion, you have so many elements (weddings, murder, dragons, magic, finding your place, etc.) and then you have so many characters in the story. It is in mixing those elements and people together and blending them properly that the story unfolds and flows together. Just like a potion, the author's pacing and mixing of unique elements makes this book a magical potion for cozy readers. Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing | Kensington Cozies and the author for the opportunity to read this ARC..
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for the opportunity to read "Seven Secret Spellcasters" in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is the 7th book in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries and it was so worth waiting for! Ms. Cahoon crafted an interesting book that I read in one sitting because I couldn't stop turning the pages. The plot was interesting and continued on themes from previous books from the series.
Mia Malone who owns her own catering company Mia's Morsels was preparing for her testing and when she tested the highest of any kitchen witch ever, she started getting a lot of attention (and pressure) to join the coven.
Mr. Darcy has been lonely since Dorian left his body. Trent Majors' (Mia's boyfriend and owner of Majors Grocery) has a new Maltese named Cerby who Mr. Darcy likes but Cerby has his own "pet" a dragon named Buddy.
Everyone is preparing for Christina and Levi's engagement party, Halloween and Mary Alice Carpenter (Grans) engagement party. In the middle of this of course, Mia gets involved in a murder. Why was Trent being investigated by the coven. It's known that he gave up his powers to Levi.
There is a new person at the lodge Blake Sandburg who has some secret going on. There are several new people to meet in this story. Including a new relative, a new employee of Abigail's named Finley Shiley. As Mia loves to collect waifs and strays, Finn soon ends up living at the schoolhouse. We learn more about Gloria and how she came to be in Mia's possession. Another interesting piece is learning how many people are actually part of the coven that Mia didn't even know about.
The story was set up to end with trouble brewing so hopefully there will be another new addition to the series soon. This book is definitely deserving of more than 5 stars!
Seven Secret Spellcasters by Lynn Cahoon is a kitchen witch mystery and one of my favorite of her series. Mia Malone is not a full-fledged witch, yet, but she does own Mia’s Morsels, a catering firm. She bought an old and haunted school house where she lives and which houses her business. Her boyfriend, Trent, passed his powers down to his brother, Levi, but still retains some and so has been gifted a hell hound by the Goddess or someone, in the persona of a sweet Maltese. Cerby was sent away to hellhound training but it did not work out well. While he was there, in his loneliness he created a pet dragon, so he has come home to Magic Springs as well. Many of the witching community wonder why Trent as sent a hellhound, as he was no longer a witch so the national office sent someone to investigate: a half leprechaun who ended up dead a few days later. Found on Trent’s land, by Trent, you can imagine what the police thought.
This is a book full of great characters, too many to name, but entertaining. The town has many humans in it as well and so there are lots of misunderstandings and confusion which keep one’s attention. As if Mia doesn’t have enough to do right now with several family engagement parties, her qualifying test and investiture, and Halloween, which as you can imagine is big in Magic Springs. Meanwhile, her grandmother is in the library searching furiously for information on things that will make all of these strange happenings make sense. It turned out to be a human murder, not a magical one. Mia investigates and nearly finds herself in the soup. Trent is anxious to convince Mia to move in with him. There is so much going on. Hang tight to your hat!
I was invited to read Seven Secret Spellcasters by Kensington Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #KensingtonPublishing #LynnCahoon #SevenSecretSpellcasters
Seven Secret Spellcasters is the 7th books in.Lynn Cahoon's Kitchen Witch Mysteries and it is a great addition to the series. The characters are likeable, the paranormal is fun and the mystery kept me guessing. Mia is a Kitchen Witch who has to take a test to complete her apprenticeship. Mia has to pick seven people who will help and support her. Her good friend Christina and fiance Levi are getting married and are having an engagement party and it is being catered by Mia's Morsels. Mia's boyfriend Trent wants to move their relationship to the next level (finally). Trent has magical powers but isn't supposed to so The Coven Board are looking into why Trent has Cerby, his hellhound and also Buddy, a baby dragon. The investigator that is sent ends up dead and Trent is a suspect. Mia's Grandmother Grans, Trent's mother Abigail, and Trent help Mia figure out who the culprit is, Mia's Morsels has a new employee Finley (Finn) and Trent and Levi's older brother Steve is in town. There is a lot going on to keep Mia busy and it keeps the story interesting and hard to put down! I have read and enjoyed all of the books in this series. This series is best read in order because of the character development. I'm looking forward to the next book to see what happens with all of these wonderful friends. I received an advance copy for free from NetGalley and Kensington Cozies and I voluntarily leave this review. #SevenSecretSpellcasters #KitchenWitchMysteries #KensingtonCozies #LynnCahoon
The Kitchen Witch series has always entertained. As the stories have evolved, Mia has learned and accepted being a kitchen witch but has tried to avoid being too formally connected to her powers and the local coven. But it is time for her to step forward and embrace it and all that it entails. It helps having so many friends and family who are also witches and have helped her through many challenges. On the flip side, she has made an alliance with local cop Mark, who is married to a witch but has tried to maintain his disbelief. Now he reaches out to Mia as his guide in navigating the waters that humans cannot fathom.
As her ceremony approaches there are other big events including Christina’s engagement party to Levi. She wants everything to be perfect but there are things that are out of her control. For instance, more people seem to know that the sweet little Maltese Cerby is actually a hellhound and Cerby has discovered a new friend- a purple baby dragon. And both of them are highly protective of those they love. Plus a half leprechaun who has come to check out Cerby and why he was sent to Trent, who is supposed to be a non practicing witch., has been murdered on Trent’s property Oh yeah, Mia’s cat Mr. Darcy, is no longer sharing his body with a ghost.
Looking for a fun read, look no further. You could read this as a standalone but why miss out on the fun of the previous books. Five purrs and two paws up.
There is so much going on in this entry to the Kitchen Witch Mysteries! It is action-packed with some great new characters and all of the old favorites. Mia is getting ready to take her test to qualify as a certified kitchen witch. She is also planning engagement parties for Christina and Levi as well as her grandmother, Mary Alice and Robert. She is stressing herself over it all, then along comes an investigator to determine why Trent was given Cerby, who has adopted a pet of his own, baby dragon Buddy, oh yes she has a new boss at the Lodge! When Trent and Cerby find the investigator dead in the woods behind Trent's house, things heat up even more! The characters in this series are all such fun and so well crafted, I would love to sit down in the kitchen of the school and just cook and chat with most of them. As for the killer reveal, well that took me a bit by surprise as well. Things just moved along at such a fast clip and there were enough suspects that I hadn't really settled on anyone person. Fun for a change! When I read the first book in this series, I wasn't sure I would read any more, but am so glad I did! This series just keeps getting better and better! My thanks for NetGalley and Kensington for the chance to read this early copy in exchange for my honest review. I say grab it and read!
I was so excited to read the seventh book in the delightful Kitchen Witch series by Lynn Cahoon. Every book in the series is great, but this one is my favorite so far. The storyline is fast-paced with some exciting developments.
Magic Springs, Idaho is in celebration mode with Halloween, several parties, and Mia's transfer of powers. Then, the National Office of Magical Creatures opens a murder investigation with Trent and Cerby in the crosshairs. Mia has her hands full with work and her mind on whether, or not, to join the coven. Of course, Mia will do whatever it takes to prove Trent and Cerby innocent of a crime---no matter what is going on with work, or the coven.
I loved the progress of the secondary characters and learning more of their background. This book can be read as a standalone, but starting with book one will give the reader the pleasure of watching the characters grow and their stories ,unfold. I would recommend this to others who enjoy paranormal mystery. The recipe at the end of the book is for peach cobbler---the way my mom made it, too.
Thank you for the advance reader e-copy sent at my request to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, #SevenSecretSpellcasters #NetGalley #KensingtonCozies #LynnCahoon #KitchenWitchMysteries
So wow! This series just gets better. It’s building to something big. This time Mia is testing to be recognized as a kitchen witch. At the same time she is working at the lodge in Magic Springs under a new boss, coordinating events for Mia’s Morsels with Abigail, studying potions with her grandmother, preparing for engagement parties for Christina and Levi and hosting the coven’s Halloween party. That’s an awful lot of action to squeeze in one book but the ante was raised by the arrival of an inspector into Trent’s familiar Cerby, a hellhound in a Maltese body. The inspector is murdered…. Mark Baldwin pulls Mia in even more on this investigation than usual, and the answers prove elusive. The book has a teaser or a forewarning of what is to come. It appears a battle between magical forces may be on the horizon and strength is gathering in Magic Springs. I was drawn in from the first and love all the characters and setting. I love the surprises in this book and don’t want to spoil it for any other readers. Let’s just say you are going to want to read the whole series so you can love the reveals in this book even more. Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Cozies for the opportunity to read this book.
This was by far my favorite book of the series. It has lots more magic and who doesn't love a purple dragon?
Mia Malone is preparing to take her kitchen witch test to take over the mantle from her grandmother. While studying, she continues to work as catering director at the Lodge in Magic Springs as well as keeping her hand in at her own catering company, Mia's Morsels. She is being pressured to join the local coven and she is unsure if she wants that responsibility. Complicating things further, Mia's boyfriend, Trent, is under investigation from the National Coven because the Goddess delivered him a hellhound (Cerby) and he is not supposed to have any magic. When a half-witch, half-leprechaun shows up to assess the situation, then ends up dead, things get more complicated for Mia.
I loved all the magic in this book as well as the descriptions of delicious food. The familiars are always a fun addition and I am always curious to what mischief Cerby will get up to. No spoilers but I was very excited that the book ended on a note that the series will likely continue. We should get more supernatural elements and hopefully plenty more of the dragon.
Thank you to Kensington Cozies and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
SEVEN SECRET SPELLCASTERS is the seventh book in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries by Lynn Cahoon. With a fast-paced plot, this newest addition to the series kept me turning pages late into the night. The story is filled with magic, friendship, adorable pets—even a baby dragon!—and a murder to solve. Protagonist Mia Malone has a lot to juggle on top of taking her kitchen witch exams, and the last thing she needs is a body to turn up, and law enforcement turning their attention to her boyfriend, Trent, and his new dragon. The mystery itself is top-notch, but what grabs and keeps my attention are the characters and the surprising details of their magical abilities. While you could read this as a standalone for the mystery, starting with the first book is recommended since each book builds on the previous one. Plus, you’re going to want to get to know these wonderful characters and watch how they grow with each new discovery and trial they face. If you enjoy character-driven stories with dashes of magic, then you’ll love the Kitchen Witch Mysteries!
I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoy this paranormal series. In this one Mia and her family and friends are preparing for two engagement parties, one involving Christina and Levi and the other for her grandmother. In addition Mia is testing for her Kitchen Witch test. When she passes with an unexpected score, she has a special induction, and the Coven is again trying to recruit her.
To complicate things, Mia’s boyfriend Trent’s dog which is a hell hound in disguise, is being investigated. A part leprechaun comes to investigate why Trent, who has transferred his magic to his brother Levi, has been gifted with a hell hound. Before the evaluation, the person is found dead on Trent’s property. The coven takes the investigation out of Chief Mark Baldwin s hands so Mark enlists Mia to help solve the case.
There is so much going on in this one. The murder mystery includes a surprise ending as does the story. There are several other smaller mysteries.
The character’s relationships continue to develop.
I can’t wait to read the next book in this enjoyable series.
I listened to the audiobook which brought the story to life.
This was awesome! Probably the best in the series!
Filled with characters I have come to love [and now BUDDY!!! IYKYK], and some very interesting new ones, this adventure with Mia & Co. is fantastic from beginning to [almost] end, with a HUGE shocker at the end that I certainly didn't see coming and left me wondering JUST how that is all going to play out.
My *ONLY* quibble [that is how good this book is, I literally have only ONE quibble] is this: whilst I NEVER saw the killer coming, or the why, after all the running around [I am sad that Mia doesn't really get to cook anymore] and all the drama, the reveal felt very rushed and really anticlimactic. It just lacked the "well that was scary/crazy/intense" feeling that I love with a reveal; I just wanted a little more oomph. Like that very unexpected ending. That was crazy unexpected. SO FUN!!
This series has become one of my all-time favorites and I cannot wait to see how Ms. Cahoon gets everyone out of the trouble that waltzed in at the end of this book!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Lynn Cahoon, and Kensington Publishing/Kensington Cozies for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Seven Secret Spellcasters is book #7 in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries series by Lynn Cahoon.
This series gets better with each book! Mia has some big changes taking place in her life regarding her witch training. Cerby is the sweetest Hellhound you’ll ever see and he has a new friend! Mia is realizing that there is a lot left for her to learn about the magical world. When there’s a death near Trent‘s home, he and Cerby are suspects, and Mia works with Mark to figure out who the killer is. I really liked Mia and Mark working together on this case. I also appreciated the times where Mia realized she was venturing into “too stupid to live” territory. I was concerned in the last book with all the relationship changes that it was the end of the series and I’m so happy that despite all the changes everyone is still there for each other. And what a surprise at the end!
Thank you to the author, Kensington Cozies, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This is the 7th book in the series and by far my favorite book. I do not think this book could be read as a stand-alone book. I think that the reader would miss out on some exciting backstory, although the author does try to explain the backstory when needed.
As always, Mia has a lot on her plate. I would love to see her quit the catering job at the hotel but I think that adds to the story line and allows her to have “connections”. Mia’s magic and her involvement with the coven hasn’t been as prominent until this book. To me, that is what made this book so different from the past books. The story is take a turn and this book is setting up the stage for future books. Mia and gang need to find who murdered from the head of the magical office because Trent is a suspect!
All is well in the end, but something is brewing in Magic Springs!
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for an advanced copy of this book.
Seven Secret Spellcasters is the 7th book in the Kitchen Witch series by Lynn Cahoon. I absolutely LOVE this series! I have read every book, and it just keeps getting better.
I absolutely LOVE that this book is set during Halloween.
Mia definitely has her hands full.
Magic Springs is getting ready for all the fun activities that comes with Halloween. Mia has a new boss at the lodge, a witchy exam coming up and her boyfriend Trent is in hot water and under suspicion and being investigated by the National Office of Magical Creatures.
Mia will do whatever it takes to help her boyfriend.
This was such a fun filled jam packed book. The character development is excellent.
While Mia is super busy with work, she finds herself having to find out who killed an investigator who came to explore Trent and Cerby. After all, Trent gave up his powers and yet the Goddess has sent him a hellhound. Between her personal life and her professional life, Mia finds that she surrounded by more witchcraft than even she had imagined. But her witchcraft save her. She digs deeper into the investigators death, or will it be a trap that finally is her undoing?
I don’t know how each book in the series is better than the last, because each and everyone is fabulous on a tone. The author manages to double down with each entry and I cannot help but come back for more every single time. As soon as I finish one book, I’m waiting for the next one to be released. The author really is that good.
There were quite a few changes going on since the last book, some of which I hadn’t even remembered reading about. When death caused the human and witchy worlds to kinda collide, Mia found herself sleuthing this case with the police chief Mark himself. Even with Trent nearby and the police protection, it was still inevitable Mia was gonna face off with a killer and as always come out victorious—with the help of some reinforcements.
Some of the changes were a little sad, but a new character was introduced and something about a couple characters was found out that was pretty cool. With the main mystery solved, there was something that happened at the end that definitely make me eager to dig into the next book!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Kensington Cozies via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
I’ve read all the books before this one (with a small exception but that doesn’t matter), and I think this might be my favorite of them all. Mia is dealing with a new boss, a new employee, 3 engagement parties, an upcoming exam, and just so many other things when there’s another murder, but this time the body is found in the woods behind Trent’s house. Poor Mia is really put through the wringer in this one. I love how we say many sides of her, and how she balances everything with humor if not much grace. There are some interesting future plotlines scattered throughout this, and I’m ready for the next one. Well-written, engaging, and a great addition to the series. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
She’s Back! Mia becomes deeply involved in the investigation of the death of the National Investigator. The National Office of Magical Creatures has sent an investigator to check out their suspicions regarding Trent, Mia’s boyfriend, and Cerby, a Maltese suspected of being a hellhound. I enjoyed the story. We, as readers learned so much about Levi & Trent’s powers, the Majors, and other magical persons in the community.
I enjoyed learning the new boss’ secrets. Mia is also trying to be ready for her first exams. She started later than most of the other kitchen witches.
I felt this story fit well into the Halloween time frame. I was given an advanced readers copy and these are my own opinions.
This latest in the series will likely be most appreciated by those who have been following Mia's adventures as a kitchen witch in training. This time out her love interest Trent and his familiar Cerby, who appears as a Maltese, are the prime suspects in the murder of an investigator who has come to the magical town to look into them. Mia takes on the witchy side of the investigation. At its root this is a classic cozy-small town, family, friends, romance and pets- but its overlayered with the whole witchy thing which time felt overwhelming because there's almost more attention paid to it than to the crime. That said. I always enjoy a visit with Mia thanks to Cahoon's storytelling. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A good read for fans.
