Shel Silverstein's influence on Jeff McMahon is obvious; I wasn't at all surprised to see that Running to the Sun is dedicated to the poetic giant. Unfortunately, where Shel Silverstein's poetry is quirky, humorous, and childlike, these poems read like they're trying to be quirky, humorous, and childlike. The effort shows through and the magic isn't there.

The illustrations are delightful; Running to the Sun is most successful when the images make an essential part of the gag. If I were only rating the illustrations, I'd give it five stars. If Mr. McMahon can find a way to tap into a child's mind, his poetry will be almost as good as the illustrations that accompany it.
