As the rookie goalie for the Pittsburgh Fury, I have one job: keep my eye on the puck.

I finally made it to the pros, like my father before me, and I have to prove I belong here. But lately, I’ve been distracted.

There’s this woman. I met her after a game in Vegas, and we got a little drunk—and married.

My new wife is stunning, a cellist whose music breaks down my defenses. Amazingly, she’s moved to Pittsburgh to be with me and she even fits in with my rowdy family. Everything should be perfect.

But while I fight to keep my spot between the pipes, she’s struggling to find a path away from her controlling family. And now, her father is feeding nasty rumors to the press and I think my coaches believe them. The team is icing me out.

Was this marriage a reckless gamble after all?

Playing for Keeps is a sizzling sports romance with a tight-knit hockey family, a marriage of convenience, and two people learning to trust their hearts.

🎙Narrated by: Ehlen Valentine & James Cassidy 🎙

Ehlen and James really did an amazing job on giving this book and these characters life! Ehlen gave Emerson the perfect voice! I loved that she truly embraced Emerson! James truly gave Gunner the best voice! I couldn't imagine either one of these characters having anything different. This is the first audiobook with either narrator and now I want to listen to more with their voices!!

Okay now onto the main event: THE REVIEW

I'm a newbie to Lainey Davis' work but I couldn't have picked a better book to start with! I absolutely 😍 ADORE 😍 Emerson and Gunner! They couldn't have been a better match for each other. They were the balm to each others wounds and complimented each other in the best ways!

Emerson has definitely been through some things within her life. But that didn't stop her from trying new things or hinder doing what she truly wanted to do! I really enjoyed seeing her grow as a person and be able to spread her wings like a butterfly 🦋. She deserved so much better than she had and she definitely found her person when she found Gunner!

Gunner is such a whole treat of a man ❤️. I absolutely loved his love for Emerson even when he couldn't recognize those feelings. He had thr best reactions to so much even though it could have been the opposite. He was loving, and caring in such a way that helped foster Emersons trust and love. But also the trust with her body. She had never been cherished like she had been with Gunner and came to love ❤️ her body like all women should.

Gunner trust had one of the best families that I have read! I loved how loud, rambunctious and loving they all were! It didn't matter to them if Emerson just joined the family or not they were going to riot for her! Tjis truly made my ❤️ swell so much 🥰.

Not only did the characters compliment each other but they made sure that they gave back to their community! Emerson volunteering at the local place where she could teach kids all about music 🎶 ! I was LIVING for how much they involved their local animal adoptions! I am a huge animal lover and seeing that they wanted to make sure these dogs 🐕 got to have their Fur-ever home was so precious!

🔥 Let's Talk About Sex Baby 🥵:
🌶️🌶️.5 /5

Thank you so much to Lainey Davis & Home Cooked Books for the free ALC copy 🫶🏻. All opinions✨️ are my own, honest and voluntary✨️.

Cellist Emerson has endured life under the oppressive thumbs of her unforgiving maestro father and her overbearing mother, but in an act of rebellion she eschews an interview with the symphony of their choice in favor of a flight to Vegas and uncertainty. At her first cash-paying gig she catches the eye of a towering Viking-like professional hockey player and upon awakening the next morning, they find themselves wed.

Suffering from impostor syndrome, newly minted goalie Gunnar is distracted at his post-NhL debut team function by the curvaceous brunette soulfully coaxing gorgeous sounds from her enormous stringed instrument. The pair immediately hit it off and Gunnar rolls with the quickie wedding concept, insisting his new bride stay with him in Pittsburgh while she decides what to do with her life.

Can their hasty marriage become a marriage in fact? Gunnar is certainly determined it will for them. Emerson’s unscrupulous parents, however, are determined to destroy their daughter’s happiness at the expense of her husband’s reputation. Stags, however, never give in and the entire clan rally around the couple, but will it be enough?

Emerson is extremely capable, if unsure of herself, and Gunnar is exactly who and what she needs to survive the slings and arrows of the legacy of terrible parenting. He falls first in the most delightful ways, and always makes sure Emerson feels cherished and satisfied.

I was fortunate to have received an advance reader copy from the wonderful author Lainey Davis, and I’m very pleased to share my honest review.

My first Lainey Davis novel!

This is a surprise marriage novel (as in they met, and woke up married!) mixed with a hockey romance, with some "finding herself" splashed in.

Gunnar is an NHL goalie who just played in his first game. While out later that night, he hears some great live music. Played by Emerson. The attraction is instant, and when they wake up the next morning, they realize they spent more than just the night together. They got married.

Emerson is at a crossroads. Unhappy with her life and the controlling parents she has, she's decided to try to be on her own. I love that the first night out, she meets the guy who's going to help her so much.

When Gunnar realizes how much help Emerson needs, he steps up. It's so sweet. But can two virtual strangers make it work? Especially when one of them is in the public eye?

And what about their families? How do you explain a relationship when there's not really one?

I love now supportive Gunnar is and how much he brings to her life. New experiences, new people.

I really enjoyed it. Both characters were amazing.

Spicy, emotional, and Pittsburgh!
This book had everything forced marriage, friends-to-lovers, a fiercely emotional and mentally intelligent hero, and a sweet, inexperienced FMC who completely stole my heart. The connection between the hockey player and the classical musician was electric! Their chemistry and emotional bond made it impossible to put down.

As a hardcore Pittsburgh fan, I have to say the author did a great job capturing the vibe of the city. I just wish there had been even more local flavor—more Pittsburgh slang, neighborhoods, and landmarks! It would’ve made the setting feel even more alive. That said, this is one of the best Pittsburgh-based romances I’ve read, and it left me wanting more in the best way possible.

Highly recommend if you love passionate romance with real emotional stakes and characters you’ll root for from page one. 💛🖤

This story was so cute and also funny. I love how the story started off and then you get to know how that first chapter is written I was laughing because it was so cute she had no clue who he was and didn’t want to use him. I dislike her parents so much if you read the book you understand why. I love that he support her in anything that she did and she did the same thing with him. I love how this told her parents off I was yes she finally putting herself first and didn’t care about what other people think. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Emerson and Gunner stole my heart!🥹

✨𝒯𝒽ℴ𝓊𝑔𝒽𝓉𝓈✨
𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐬 seriously got me in my feels, and after finishing the audiobook, I couldn’t stop thinking about the main characters. The story centers around one wild night in Vegas that leads cellist Emerson to accidentally marry NHL goalie Gunner. Instead of an annulment, the two choose to stay married and navigate the challenges in their careers and personal lives together.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 story was on the emotional side. Emerson grew up in a sheltered environment under the watchful eyes of her controlling parents. But when she finally decides to take control of her own life, her parents push back, putting a strain on her new marriage. It was the newfound family and a supportive husband that gave Emerson the strength to keep going. Gunner and Emerson’s relationship developed beautifully. Their playful banter, steamy moments, and deep connection all struck a chord with me. It was a story that really moved me!

🎧The dual narration by 𝐙𝐨𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 and 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐲 was perfection, a treat to my auditory senses. They perfectly captured the main characters' essence. This was my first time listening to both narrators, and I was impressed with their performance, especially the soothing voice that brought Emerson to life!

𝐈𝐟 you enjoy accidental marriage and hockey romance, then “𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐬“ is a must-listen for you. Special thanks to Lainey Davis and Home Cooked Books for this audio copy. All thoughts shared here are my own.

🎧🎧AUDIOBOOK REVIEW🎧🎧

I normally chat about a story before I go into narration when I do an audiobook review, but LISTEN, James Cassidy and Zoe Blake were OUTSTANDING! So outstanding that had the storyline been “not good” it would not have mattered because they were THAT good.

Okay then. Do with that tidbit of information what you will. Let’s talk about this story!

If you read/listened to the Out of Bounds boxset that just recently released with the Forging series stories, then you might a little bit familiar with Gunnar’s ”big family energy” , and if you haven’t, don’t worry, you’re about to experience the glory of it all! #winning And, the best part of Gunnar’s family energy is that it is the “flipside” of Emerson’s family energy, and it just warmed my heart for the two of them. I rooted for their success from the minute I started listening and I never wavered!

Emerson & Gunnar were a true “yin and yang” couple in my eyes. Each one was exactly what the other “needed” to grow and flourish as people and as a couple. That’s the best way I can describe their personalities and their story. It’s not a complicated story nor is it something we’ve never read before, but the utter joy that I felt is what set it apart for me. I’ve always said that people will remember how a story made them feel way before they remember any details about it years later, and I will battle anyone that says otherwise lol. This story made me feel all kinds of goodness and I absolutely loved it.

4.75 True Rating | I loved this book so much. It was just all green flags and the perfect/cutest couple. Also, as it was my first hockey romance and it was set in Pittsburgh, I loved it!!

The couple is adorable. I could really relate to Emerson and I loved watching her grow into who she’s meant to be. And I loved that the MMC is so in love with her, so immediately, that he’s just doing what he can so she can be who she’s meant to be, getting out of her way and moving things/people/problems out of her way. It wasn’t “she’s beautiful because he said so” but “He knows that she’s always been beautiful and now she’s got the confidence to know that she’s always been beautiful too.”

And the family aspect was inclusive enough to be exactly what she needed without feeling like it was too much.

Why Not a Five Star Rating?
I absolutely loved it but it wasn’t life changing on a deeper level. It was just exactly what I needed, well written, and I would happily share with others!
Again, just so cute and warm/fuzzy vibes. Us against the world vibes 🫶

I love them! ❤️
I feel like Emerson, the FMC, is someone I can truly relate to. The way she was raised, always being a good girl and listening to her parents, resonated with me. She’s a Juilliard graduate cellist, yet her parents insisted she play the violin in an orchestra of their choosing.
And then there’s Gunnar, the MMC—Goalie Gunnar, Odin’s brother, and an absolutely wonderful character. It’s so refreshing to read about a male lead who knows how to communicate healthily with his partner, who offers support, sees issues, and actually works to solve them like a mature adult. I cannot express how much I love their relationship. 🥰
Gunnar’s patience with Emerson was beyond admirable. He was her first, and the respect he showed her left me speechless. He never pressured her—only ever understanding, giving her the space and time she needed.
Also, I have to admit (with a bit of shame) that I didn’t get the joke he made to her either. When he told her to "look it up," I was just as lost as Emerson—Googled it, and learned something new myself! 😂
It was such a fun and fast read! The story flowed beautifully, and I loved seeing characters from previous books make appearances. Another great addition to Lainey Davis’ world! 📖💖

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

I feel like it was an okay read, first of all the story started out messy, like in time wise.
Also I feel like the MC's have zero chemistry with each other. And the sex scenes are written not so great. And boring. It was like reading a Wattpad story.
Throughout the story FMC was kind of like doormat, especially when she was trying to tell him she's a virgin, I hated the MMCs non existent reaction tbh.
Well anywas it was a cute story I guess.

Hockey And Music
Another wonderful story about the next generation of Stag men, this time Gunnar, second son of Tyrion and Juniper. Without realizing falling in love at first sight (or hearing her play the cello ?) with Emerson, getting drunk together and getting hitched – all in Las Vegas. After having been controlled by her father her whole life, being with the Stag family (and they are all there in this book) opens up a complete different world for her. It’s just heart warming how those Stags come together to support their newest member in her hour of need. And the way they work with kids and puppies … smiles, tears and laughter. So very highly recommended! <3

Another great book from Lainey. Another great Stag man and hockey story. Gunner was a fantastic character who sounded close to a perfect fantasy man for me. I enjoyed knowing many of the characters from previous books. 5 stars all the way! Steamy sex scenes with very emotional exchanges too. Challenges all seemed realistic and added to the overall storyline.
Impressive once again. Love Brady stories, stag stories and other various stories I've read. I've enjoyed them all.

Whelp, it’s official. I enjoy hockey romance books. Who knew?! I sure didn’t. Thank you @homecookedbooks @authorlaineydavis for this ALC. Zoe & James had the perfect voices to bring both MCs to life. Loved Gunnar’s mom so much. I wanted to throat punch Emerson’s parents, not gonna lie there. This brought the feels and a good HEA. Somewhere in the story there’s a mention of a necklace… I’ll just leave it at that 😅.

The Stags love hard, and they love quick.

This is my first foray into Lainey Davis’s hockey era, and I AM HERE FOR IT. Quick note, I’m not usually a fan of sports romances, but if Lainey’s writing it, I’m reading it. I have so much to catch up on where her body of work is concerned. I’ll get to all of them, I promise.

Gunnar is a rookie goalie for The Fury, a hockey team out of Pittsburg. He’s in Las Vegas for a game, and has to start as goalie for the first time due to the regular goalie being injured. It…does not go well, but the after-partying (more low-key because they lost) leads Gunnar to meet Emerson, a talented musician and composer, who has fled from her controlling and abusive parents, getting on the first flight out of New York that she could. He’s hypnotized by her cello playing and knows he has to talk to her.

There’s drinking, and laughing, and a lot of other things that they don’t remember in the morning, as they discover they are now married.

I’ve just realized that I need to cut down on all the things I want to say about this book, because I’ll end up giving away the whole plot. So I will highlight a few things and keep spoilers away. (I did put all of my observations and feelings about the book onto my husband, who was delighted to hear to all the fist-pumping “YEAH!”s that I shouted out while reading. He’s such a doll, he knows books are my love language.)

The first line of the book made me laugh out loud. Seriously, I chortled for a full two minutes, and if you don’t think that’s a long time to laugh, just try it. Gunnar is a big guy, and he has a big heart. Even though he doesn’t remember his wild first night with Emerson, he knows they didn’t consummate the marriage, and isn’t sure if she even really wants to be married to him. It turns out that being married gets him positive press, but he absolutely does not force or even try to coerce Emerson into playing along. He always, always gives her the choice.

I love Gunnar. He’s a giant teddy bear with a cinnamon roll heart. And he will defend his wife against all enemies.

Oh, did I mention Em is a curvy girl? I LOVE SEEING CURVY GIRLS IN ROMANCE! (I am a curvy girl. You probably figured that out from the previous sentence.)

Some other things I loved about the book are Gunnar’s twin brothers who also play for The Fury, Gunnar’s parents, Stag game day parties, and Gunnar’s absolutely unwavering support of Emerson figuring out how to achieve her dreams, helping her however he can.

Remember those pesky, awful parents of hers? They ain’t gonna let her go quietly, but they don’t realize that they’ve just met their match.

I loved this book. LOVED IT. I loved it so much that I got the physical copy of it, because that’s what I do with my favorite authors (when I can afford it). You’re going to love this romance, folks, even if you know nothing about hockey. It’s just that good of a story.

Emerson has lived her whole life in Manhattan, NYC, she went to Julliard for music, and has been performing her whole life to make her parents happy. Her controlling father is a conductor for the NYC Orchestra. Emerson has always played the viola and flute, small female instruments. Now, that she's an adult she wants to switch over to the cello, but, her father and mother think that is not a lady like instrument and she need to stick with what she knows, the viola.

Gunnar Stag, is a hockey goalie, and plays NHL Hockey for the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team, along with his twin brothers. His family has a lot of professional athletes including his father who was also in the NHL. This is Gunnar's rookie season, and he wants to do the best he can. Now that he is living on his own, and away from his family, he realizes how quiet an empty apartment can be. He is use to his 3 other brother always piling on top of him and no one ever having any room.

Emerson went to play at the train station because she wanted to hear the sounds that the station gives off, not trying to play for money or to embarrass her family. Emerson escapes that same night, and leaves NYC and heads to Las Vegas. She isn't sure what she is going to do, she wants to just get away from her controlling parents. Emerson sees a add looking for musicians to help a local Las Vegas diner. When she gets to Las Vegas she goes to the restaurant and plays the night for them.

During the night, Gunnar and his brothers and his Uncle all go to the same restaurant. Gunnar sees Emerson and is instantly taken with her. They start talking and drinking after she's finished performing for the night. Gunnar suggests she move in with him as a roommate, as he gets lonely. They joke for a bit more and drink some more. Then they mention getting married in Sin City like Elvis did years ago. Then Emerson states that she could just move in as his wife and not a roommate, and they both agree and get married!

When Emerson moves to Pittsburgh to be with Gunnar, they start off as just friends / roommates getting to know one another. Emerson doesn't know what to do with herself now that her father isn't around telling her what to do 24 hrs a day. Once she gets the lay of the city and what being a NHL Hockey wife means, Emerson starts to embrace being on her own, and being married to Gunnar. They start to enjoy each other, and she learns to let go of her insecurities her father pushed on her so much.

Will Gunnar be able to hold onto Emerson? Will Emerson embrace being with Gunnar? Or will she run away to get away from him and her family's reach?

I did receive a free ARC copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.

When Emerson decides she's had enough of her controlling parents and their constant verbal berating, she leaves NYC on a whim and ends up in Las Vegas. As a professional classical musician, all she's ever been allowed to play are all of the timeless classical pieces that are perfect for a symphonic orchestra, but not what brings her the most joy to play. With nothing but her cello and the clothes on her back, she finds a restaurant in a hotel where she is hired to play whatever she likes and she shines brightest when she can make music that brings her the most joy.
Gunnar is a professional hockey player and coming from a huge family of other pro players, the pressure is on as he is about to play his first pro-league game. So when he sets eyes and ears on Emerson, he never could've imagined that his time in Vegas would also lead him to this gorgeous musician that takes him breath away. Gunnar is mesmerized by her passionate performance and gorgeous curves, he has to introduce himself.
Their connection and attraction is INSTANT, and after way too many drinks, Emerson and Gunnar wake up the next morning MARRIED! With both their reputations on the line, they decide to stay married but as time goes by, they start to fall for each other. Even with prolific careers, they were both trying to find their way in life and ended up finding each other. Watching their bond grow and fortify as they face the growing pains of this new life was beautiful to see. The good, bad, and spicy are all showcased in this beautiful story about finding love in the most unlikely of ways and holding on tight to the ones who you learn to trust and love you for exactly who you are. I especially loved watching Emerson grow into this woman full of power, passion and determination. She takes back her life and makes it a beautiful one full of all the things that truly matter most. And Gunnar being her biggest cheerleader and rock through it all was a testament to his love and devotion to her. This was my first Lainey Davis book but it most definitely will not be my last.
Zoe Black and James Cassidy were phenomenal on this title. I've never heard Zoe before and she was a fantastic Emerson, portraying her gentle strength in her performance that was perfect for the character. I'm almost positive that James Cassidy is my new favorite male narrator. This man is probably sick of me in his comment sections and I wouldn't blame him! He's an incredible talent with so much range and I never pass up on an opportunity to listen to his work.

Huge thanks to Lainey Davis and Home Cooked Books for the early audio copy!

Okay, stop what you're doing and add "Playing for Keeps" by Lainey Davis to your audiobook queue right now! I swear, this book was a total joyride from start to finish, and I'm still smiling thinking about it.

First off, huge shoutout to Zoe Black and James Cassidy on the narration! Seriously, they nailed it. James Cassidy's voice for Gunner? Pure melted butter with a hint of protective alpha, and Zoe Black perfectly captured Emerson's journey from shy and controlled to confident and strong. They just became these characters for me, making the listening experience truly immersive.

This book has all my favorite things packed into one amazing story: hockey romance, a curvy heroine finding her confidence, and that absolutely adorable "he falls first" trope that always gets me! The whole woke up married in Vegas premise was hilarious and such a fun way to kick off Gunner and Emerson's whirlwind romance.

Gunner is just... everything. He's this big, sweet hockey goalie who immediately sees Emerson for who she is and champions her every step of the way. His patience and unwavering support as she navigates leaving her controlling parents and pursuing her own dreams? So swoon-worthy! And the way he makes her feel cherished and beautiful? Be still my heart!

Oh, and the found family vibes in this book are just chef's kiss! The supporting characters are so loud and loving, and they truly embrace our heroine, making you feel like you're part of their wonderful, chaotic world. Plus, as a huge animal lover, the adorable elements involving rescue dogs just added an extra layer of sweetness that made my heart so happy.

If you're in the mood for a romance that's incredibly heartwarming, has a perfect blend of sweetness and a touch of steam, and will leave you with a huge smile on your face, then you absolutely must listen to this gem! It's everything I look for and more💘

A sweet “woke-up-married” yarn with great narration…

💖📚 Story: 4 ⭐️s
🎧🎤 Narration: 5⭐️s

Davis kicks off her hockey spinoff series with a goalie golden retriever MMC and a curvy cellist FMC waking up married in Vegas. She’s escaping her controlling parents, he’s out to prove he is more than just the latest link in his family’s sports legacy. There is some steamy mutual attraction, humor, a cast of wonderful (his family) and frustrating (her family) secondary characters, some playful pups, along with some great mental health rep. The result is a story with an engaging balance of sweet and spice.

Gunnar Stag and Emerson Saltzer have very different experiences of what it means to be part of a family. While Gunnar has known nothing but love and support, Emerson has known control and criticism. Her parents have rigid expectations and she wants to break free. When they meet, the attraction is instant and electric. All he wants to do is take care of her, but however well-meaning, that can still be another cage. When they wake up married and decide to stay that way for mutual convenience, they work to create a balanced partnership that blossoms into love. And the journey Davis has created for them is enjoyable to follow.

The audiobook is excellent. James Cassidy and Zoe Black are both new to me narrators, and they do a fantastic job. Cassidy’s performance embodies Gunnar’s boundless energy, tender care, and sexiness. And Black’s delivery is a perfect match not only for Emerson’s vulnerability but also the character’s nascent strength. Davis has created such a compelling arc for Emerson and Black’s performance more than does that work justice.

PFK was a great listening experience. On the whole, Davis has provided a solid start to the series that works on its own, but also sets up some intriguing breadcrumbs for the future. And while the story pacing was a little uneven for me at times, the characters and setting make me excited to follow her trail to the next book.

I’m grateful to have received an ALC copy of the audiobook via Home Cooked Books and also read via KU. All opinions expressed are my own.

Cellist Emerson has spent her life under the tyrannical baton of her maestro father and overbearing mother, but in a defiant crescendo, she abandons a pre-arranged symphony interview for a spontaneous flight to Vegas. This act of rebellion leads her to her first paid gig, where she captures the attention of Gunnar, a towering, Viking-like professional hockey player. The morning after, they awaken to a shocking realization: they're married.

Gunnar, a newly minted NHL goalie battling impostor syndrome, is immediately captivated by the curvaceous brunette coaxing soulful sounds from her cello. Their instant connection leads him to embrace the quickie wedding, insisting Emerson stay with him in Pittsburgh while she navigates her newfound freedom.

Can a hasty marriage become a lasting commitment? Gunnar is unequivocally determined to make it so. Emerson, though immensely capable, is unsure of herself, and Gunnar proves to be exactly what she needs to withstand the fallout from her terrible upbringing. He falls first, in the most endearing ways, ensuring Emerson always feels cherished and satisfied. Their journey is complicated by Emerson's unscrupulous parents, who are hell-bent on destroying her happiness and Gunnar's reputation. But the "Stags" — Gunnar's resilient clan — rally around the couple, demonstrating unwavering support.

This novel is a delightful blend of surprise marriage romance and a hockey love story, with a strong undertone of self-discovery. I loved how Emerson, at a crossroads with her controlling parents, finds the perfect partner in Gunnar on her very first night of independence. Gunnar's unwavering support, introducing Emerson to new experiences and people, is incredibly sweet. Both characters are wonderfully developed, and the story beautifully explores whether two virtual strangers can build a life together, especially under the glare of public scrutiny and the interference of manipulative families.

The audiobook experience is further elevated by the exceptional narration of Zoe Black and James Cassidy, whose performances truly bring this heartwarming story to life.

Gunnar Stag, rookie goalie for the Pittsburgh Fury hockey team, is bummed about their recent loss but is happy to celebrate the children’s hospital ambassadorship secured for him and his two brothers by Brian, their agent, at a Vegas bar where live cello music is being supplied by a beautiful, curvy woman. When he meets Emerson Saltzer, daughter of the famous New York Symphony conductor, they quickly hit it off, and she confesses to running away for a bit to play her kind of music in her own way. The more they talk, the more they drink until they wake up the next morning - married. The news of two kids from prominent families spreads like wildfire through the media when they are spotted outside the wedding chapel, so the chance to get the marriage annulled quietly goes up in a cloud of smoke. Instead, Brian immediately calls in the fixers who have already created a plausible love story that will change the narrative from hunky, eligible hockey player to hunky married hockey player committed to his wife, family, and worthy causes.

Oh, my stars, what a tour de force emotional rollercoaster by Lainey Davis! I adore Gunnar and Emerson and hate her controlling parents. I also love being reconnected with the other Stag family members as they welcome a new addition to their ranks. And I was fascinated by the multiple adjacent storylines, containing carefully researched details of not only professional hockey but parental abuse, mental health, and social services, wrapped up in one big, beautiful bow. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to the beautiful handling of a virgin’s experience in how a partner’s patience, commitment, and meticulous care can be so crucial to finding HEA. I have read all the Stag Generations Books, and Playing for Keeps is my current favorite, subject to change, of course, when Playing for Payback and Playing for Power are released, so don’t miss this specatacular gem!

I received this book as an ARC reviewer and voluntarily offer my honest opinion.

Gunnar Stag is the rookie goalie for the Pittsburgh Fury. He comes from an athletic family that is super close with each other. Emerson Saltzer is a classically trained musician who has had to endure her parents ridicule her entire life. When she finally decides she has had enough of her father’s belittling she books a flight to Vegas on a whim and lands a gig playing cello at an upscale restaurant. It just so happens that Gunnar is also at this restaurant with his twin brothers and their agent. From the moment Gunnar spots Emerson, he knows there is something special about her. Luckily for him the two get drunkenly married in Vegas. To avoid a PR nightmare the two now have to play the part of happily married newlyweds. Their chemistry is so strong though, they don’t have to do a lot of acting. Now living together in Pittsburgh it’s inevitable that they give in to their chemistry and the sparks fly from there!

This was my first Lainey Davis book, and I am hooked! When I saw the narrators I was intrigued, but I had no idea what to expect. The story captivated me from start to finish, the first sentence set the tone for this fun and flirty book. As fun and flirty as this one, both characters were also dealing with their own hardships. Gunnar was trying to maintain his spot as starting goalie and Emerson was dealing with her vile, controlling parents. The way the two helped each other and the strength Gunnar gave Emerson was truly special. Emerson deserved nothing but the best and Gunnar was determined to show her the love and appreciation she had never received before. The entire Stag family was fabulous and I am looking forward to more from them.

Playing For Keeps is dual narrated by Ehlen Valentine and James Cassidy. I am a big fan of both of them (hence my interest in this book) and they were fantastic. Ehlen truly embraced Emerson and captured her character growth along the way. I am so used to listening to James in dark romance, so it was such a treat listening to him voice a cinnamon roll MMC. He performed Gunnar’s lighthearted personality so well.

Updated for audio: As I noted below, out of all the fantastic stories written by author Lainey Davis, her Forging Series, and anything about the Pittsburg Fury hockey team and those fabulous Stags and their extended family are the best. And the best is the absolute best when it’s performed for you by talented narrators like Zoe Black and James Cassidy. Cassidy’s portrayal of Gunnar will have you laughing in the Prologue. He’s happy to “discover” Emerson first thing in the morning, and then he skillfully cycles through Gunnar’s wonder, bafflement, uncertainty, sometimes in a whispering voice that will just grab you. He’s the cocky hockey player, the devoted son and brother, and the fierce husband. And – he does accents!! Zoe Black’s performance of Emerson is spot on. Emerson is a complicated person and Black reveals all of it: the insecurity and resignation from constantly being devalued by her family, the uncertainty about her ability to forge her own future but also the strength as she proceeds to do so comes clearly through in Black’s performance, as does her growing affection for Gunnar, her yearning for the life she could have with him, and her sadness when she fears she’s going to ruin his life. A moving, entertaining story made even better through these two voice actors. I received an advance listening copy of Playing for Keeps from Home Cooked Books. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.

Author Lainey Davis writes a wide variety of terrific stories, but one of my favorite series of hers is the Forging Series, all about Pittsburg Fury hockey and that fabulous Stag family. Playing for Keeps is the fourth book in the series, and I think it just may be my favorite to date.

Gunnar Stag is the rookie goalie for the Fury. Strong, cut, Stag handsome with the manners and sweetness all those brothers have under their sometimes cocky and crude behavior. But Gunnar? There’s just an extra layer of sweetness about him. He’s young and vibrant and as eager and excitable as a puppy. He’s just trying to stay healthy, play well and learn all he can to earn a permanent position on the Fury and have some no-strings fun during his downtime. His family name and connections have certainly helped get him where he is, but it’s up to him to keep that place. He saw how fleeting it could be when he witnessed his brother’s career-ending injury and he’s determined to make the most of his opportunity.

Emerson Saltzer has been brought up wrapped so tight in expectations and conditions and non-stop criticism that she can barely breathe. Her family is well-known, well-to-do, well-placed and she hasn’t wanted for a thing. But wait, has anybody – anybody at all – ever asked her what she wanted? That would be a big no. Her father is Charles Saltzer, renowned Conductor of the New York Symphony. Emerson has been tutored and trained and taught to be a musician. She loves making music, but wants to play whatever instrument she chooses, compose, play for fun. There is no fun allowed in The Laws of Charles Saltzer and her parents just keep trying to push her farther and farther into that box (prison) they’ve created for her. When her father catches her busking, playing her cello in the New Jersey Transit lobby in Penn Station he loudly berates her in public, humiliating her. Something in her snaps and she gets up and takes the first train she can catch, which just so happens to be going to Las Vegas.

Being berated is nothing new for Emerson; it’s the story of her life. Everything about her is wrong: her body, appetite, hair, clothes, wishes, everything is wrong and her mother and father are beyond cruel in telling her so. They’ve done everything for her and she should be grateful, she should stop embarrassing them, she should stop being so common. It never lets up. Leaving as she does seems to be the only answer. She doesn’t know where she’ll go or what she’ll do, but she can’t take another minute living the life she has been, the life she’s expected to live for the rest of that life.

Gunnar is in Vegas for a pre-season game. When the game’s over he and his brothers go to a small bar to discuss endorsements with their agent. Emerson is in that same bar, playing her cello for dinner guests. And then it happens . . . their eyes meet. Cue the music playing, birds flying, stars shining, fireworks bursting. Over the top, right, but pretty much the reaction they have to each other. And what begins with him pushing his way through the crowd to introduce himself leads to a few, maybe quite a few, drinks, some discussion about her next steps and the possibility of her going to Pittsburg with him as a roommate to avoid her family until her plans are made ends with them waking up in a hotel room in the morning – married. Neither one of them exactly remembers what they did – or more likely didn’t – do. Gunnar’s agent insists they stay married for a while to avoid negative publicity for him, and the roommate idea seems plausible under the circumstances. There’s plenty of room; she can figure out what to do next, he can save his reputation and continue his career. They’ll pretend to be married but will just be roommates, nothing more. Easy peasy.

Except for that giant elephant in the room called attraction. It gets harder and harder to fake it, especially when his parents and other relatives welcome her to the family so genuinely. When they are so comfortable together and have so much in common. When what starts as a fake life begins to feel like a what-if real life. One thing leads to another, they get closer and closer, but neither wants to stand in the way of the other’s dreams. His protective husband vibe kicks in, though, when her father actively sets out to destroy her. And for the first time in her life she feels cherished and wanted and valued and beautiful.

Playing for Keeps is the perfect next step in the series. All the Stag boys are handsome and sexy, can be rowdy and exuberant and impulsive, but they’ve been raised to value family, to be kind and generous, and to love. The rest of the characters are multi-dimensional and interesting, the plot solid, the pacing smooth, and each story unique and satisfying. Emerson and Gunnar’s journey to their HEA is sweet and funny, heartbreaking, frustrating and just a great read. They’re young and in love, with a flaming hot desire and some not-so-insignificant problems to deal with. And Gunnar is the very definition of cinnamon roll golden retriever. He is so caring and considerate and protective and never wants Emerson to doubt for a second how strong and capable she is and how much she’s loved. Thanks to author Lainey Davis for providing an advance copy of Playing for Keeps. I thoroughly enjoyed it, recommend you read the entire series and then get in line to see whose story is next. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.

Gunner Stag who plays hockey for Pittsburgh Fury, as their goalie, is waking up in Vegas with a roommate. Not only that it comes with a massive headache, especially when he forgets to pull the blackout curtains and the sun shines through the sheer curtains. That's when he becomes aware he is holding a boob in his hand and there is a smooth thick thigh tossed over his hairy one. So when he gazes down, there is the juiciest round globe he wants to caress, but that's not it he wants to grab a handful of it.

He starts to hone in on the details she is still in her panties and long tee so no sex was had. Here’s the thing when Gunner figures out his left arm has gone numb from being under her head to the point of not being able to move his fingers he decides to move. Waking his beauty in the process. Meaning that wholeheartedly. He sits up to get his bearings and puts his pants on when he notices the rubber black band on his left important finger. When she looks over his bedmate who is fully dressed and now sports a purple rubber ring on the same finger.

He starts looking around the room there’s a stack of paperwork and a bouquet by her side of the bed. When Emerson Saltzer sees the paperwork and says she believes she got married. To a Gunner Stag? In giant steps, he snatched the paper out of her hand and tried to make heads or tails out of everything. But it was true he was married to Emerson Saltzer? Then his phone starts blowing up. Of course, it’s his agent, Brian. Before he could say a word Brian was off to the races. By the time Brian slowed down that’s when he figured out he needed to do damage control.

This was such a good emotionally charged book. There are so many layers to this story. The layers are funny at times, scary filled with fear, and some are filled with an overwhelming love for family and the love they come to find.

Title: Playing For Keeps
Author: Lainey Davis
Genre/s: Sports rom com
My format: Audiobook 🎧 #ALC
Narrators/Production: Zoey Black and James Cassidy
Tropes:
🏒 Hockey Goalie X Cellist
💍Curvy Heroine
🏒 He Falls First
💍 Woke Up Married In Vegas
🏒 Found Family
💍 Rescue Dogs 🐕
🏒 Golden Retriever Hero

This was a super fun listen! It had me giggling from the start! Anything under the fake relationship umbrella has my immediate attention, and this definitely kept it the whole way through!

Emerson was a complex and still relatable FMC, with her crappy family and their high expectations. Gunnar was the sweetest MMC and he was perfect for her, being so so sweet but also a total brick wall to protect her, and making her feel cherished!

I giggled so many times, and swooned even more! The way this man yearned for her?!? The way he worshipped her body? It was such a nice way to hear about a body that sounded like mine - I loved every minute.

The narration was PERFECTION for these two. Both actors nailed their performances (as always, I mean, not even surprised at these two tbh! They always nail it).

Listen to this steamy hockey romance now: https://geni.us/iICOX1u

A spicy "woke-up married" romance starring goalie Gunnar Stag and cellist Emerson Saltzer. From rookie goalie to loving husband, Gunnar's not letting anything, or anyone, keep him from protecting the woman he loves.

Playing for Keeps
Playing #1
By Lainey Davis
Narrated by Zoe Black, James Cassidy

Gunnar Stag, the one Stag brother that does things without thinking finds himself with the ultimate thing. Waking up married in Las Vegas after his professional debut ending in a loss, he went out to drown his sorrows. Seeing Emerson playing her cello captivated him, and the next thing you know, the two have a drink, and the next thing you know, they are in bed with rings. But what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas. Gunnar has some cleanup to do, resulting in the two remaining married and returning to Pittsburgh. Emerson agrees to the plan, knowing her past would catch up with her. But will the two be able to weather the storms and realize the impulsive decision may be the best in their lives? I love the Stags! Every generation is loving and supportive no matter the situation, and this one is no exception. Even though Gunnar is a mess, he knows he is loved and now Emerson gets to see just what it is like to be part of it. Lainey Davis writes amazing sport romance, a spicy story with a plot I know I will love. She definitely had me with this one, as music is my thing. This was a fantastic listen and I can't wait for more in this series.

James Cassidy and Zoe Black are perfectly cast in their roles as Gunnar and Emerson. Cassidy uses his voice as sensual with Emerson and he goes from rookie goalie to maturing husband. His voice is easy on the ears and is warm and loving. Black is so good at the innocent Emerson. Very sheltered, her coming of age and understanding life outside her shell all came through the nuances in her voice. Loved this pairing and enjoyed their narration.

Story Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (0-5)
Narration: 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧 (0-5)
Overall: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ((0-5)
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥 (0-5)

What I'm Starry-Eyed Over:
🤩 Zoe Black & James Cassidy are very well cast as Emerson & Gunnar! They totally helped me feel all the emotions and completely charmed me for a beautiful binge.
🤩 If this is your vibe, then you need to read it: “Was this marriage a reckless gamble after all? Playing for Keeps is a sizzling sports romance with a tight-knit hockey family, a marriage of convenience, and two people learning to trust their hearts.”
🤩 What brilliant characterization! And I adore Emerson Saltzer & Gunnar Stag so much !
🤩 Plus the friendly and natural chemistry and banter between them, because they are so undeniably themselves, is written fabulously!
🤩 Emerson is a professional cello player. Gunnar is a professional hockey goalie.
🤩 I love how Gunnar calls Emerson Salty! “I don’t really do nicknames,” I explain. He cackles. “Sorry, Salty. You’re a hockey wife now. It comes with the territory.”
🤩 Gunnar, filthy talking, Stag,! 🥵🌶️❤️‍🔥
🤩 How Gunnar is just so naturally flirty, and how Emerson doesn’t even know what he means!
🤩 Our FMC is very honest and open about her inexperience in the bedroom. And her fake hubby (and his goalie stretches) reeeeeally works on her.
🤩 The steamy scenes are perfectly placed and written with the best mix of vulnerability, care, and desire!
🤩 When the plot drama isn’t a third act breakup!
🤩 All the feels! I got so emotional from both the String Fury and the Scale Up interactions that I cried happy tears.
🤩 Great mental health representation.

What I'm Wishing/Dizzy About:
💫 More Stags!! I'm definitely going on to Playing for Payback! But sometime I've got to leave time for those first generation Stag stories. My reviews for lots of other Stags are up on goodreads--see Lainey Davis' page.

I will forever love Tyrion Stag the most, but boy oh boy do his sons come close! First we had Odin, who was amazing, and now we have Gunner, who reminds me so much of his father! I was in book heaven reading this book!!!
Gunner is freshly minted NHL rookie, but without the annoying cockiness. His fears of only having his chance to play for the Fury due to his father's legacy weighs on him. Emmerson is a talented violinist who loves to play the cello and longs for freedom, both artistically and in her life in general. After learning of her family's treatment, I was in awe at how she ended up in Vegas and couldn't help but think, "good for her!'
These two were absolute magic together! Normally, a hockey player and a clasically trained musician wouldn't make sense, but these two were utter perfection!!! His unwavering support of her was heart melting, but I also loved his sense of humor. He definitely had me laughing when he said, "You ready for the antlers? Time to get pranced." I loved that even though Emmerson genuinely cared for Gunner and wanted to be with him, she was willing to go back to an unhealthy, controlling situation to keep him and his career "safe."
Of course, it goes without saying, that the Stags are the best family! Their support and genuine care for each other is something to be admired, if not downright envious of.
Now I can't wait to find out more about what went down with Alder. The small tidbits that were given near the very end of this book have left me salivating for more!!!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.

If you are looking for a sunny read to brighten up what is looking to ba a rainy weekend, you don't need to look any further than Lainey Davis's new rom com Playing for Keeps. What a wonderful romance between the newest and hottest Stag on the Pittsburgh Fury Hockey Team and a runaway concert violinist who wants to be a cellist of of NYC's manipulative and controlling Maestro Conductor. This was the sweetest and hottest romance as Gunnar and Emerson find themselves waking up one morning married. But are Gunnar and Em the perfect couple, with a marriage ment to only last six month and help establish his career and help her escape her controlling and manipulative parents, this pair finds that love and the acceptance that is born from that love is truly the answer to those feelings that seep in late at night. With so much of the emotions and connection that Davis is known for, this book will remind you of why its worth taking a chance on love and how, with the love of the right person, you can find both the courage and strength to be yourself and discover who you are ment to be without fear of being judged and belittled.

It was wonderful to visit back with the Stag Clan who I met a while ago with Sweet Distraction that began the Stag Brothers Series back in 2018! Yes, that's how long ago I first met Lainey Davis....and that's how long I have been reading her books...now if that's not an endorsement of this writer's ability to create steamy romance with strong women and their equally swoony men, then I don't know what is!

Overall Thoughts: This book was a great introduction to Lainey Davis, as this is my first book by this author, but after this experience and looking at her audio backlog, it will not be my last. Between the story, the trope, the characters, and the dialog, this book is a quadrifecta hockey romance. This book grabbed me from the beginning and kept me enraptured the whole time. Between Emerson and Gunnar’s individual drama happening in their lives, and the chaos that ensues when they drunkenly get married on a whim in Vegas, that book keeps you on your toes, and has you routing for both of them from beginning to end. Everything I have listened to by Ehlen has been outstanding. She adapts to each character and truly makes them her own. Then you have James who has me melting into a puddle during the opening credits.

Narration: Dual narration, first-person present tense, multiple-POV with memories

Tropes: Hockey, Vegas marriage, marriage of convenience, rookie NHL goalie, big loud family, musician, controlling parents, v!rgin FMC, he gives her “lessons”, immediately accepted, PR drama, she escapes a bad home situation, ‘mine’

Overall: 4.5
Spice: 3
Humor: 3.5
Drama: 3
Darkness: 2.5
Narration: 5

Emerson is a talented, classically trained musician, with parents who have her whole life planned out for her, the problem is it isn’t the life she wants. On a whim she finds herself escaping to Vegas, where she meets Gunnar on her first night in a strange city.

Gunnar is a rookie goalie for the Pittsburgh Fury, on a team with two of his brothers. Fighting to keep his spot as the starting goalie against a veteran. He is super focused on his career, but when he sees Emerson playing in a Vegas lounge, he is immediately entranced by her and walks right up to the woman he wants to know more about.

When the two drunkenly get married after only knowing each other for a few hours, they agree that they both can benefit from sticking it out. Emerson can help Gunnar with his image, and he can provide her with a safe place to stay while she figures out what she wants to do. The chemistry between them is electric and once they give in to their attraction, they each realize their feelings run deeper than either of them could have anticipated.
