The Redd Key - Book One of the Bone Coven SeriesMy name is Raina Archer and I just found out I’m a witch…
Four months ago, if you would have told me I’d give up pursuing my Master’s degree in Archaeology and Anthropology to move to an uncharted island off the coast of Downeast Maine, I would have asked what brand of tea you were drinking, and if I could have some, too.
My mother passed away and everything changed. All the quirky rituals with herbs and crystals I practiced turned into real magic after my first night on Redd Hills Island, the small town where she grew up.
I dreamt of a mystical cove, where my ancestral power was uncovered. And I dreamt of him…the dark, brooding, Soulbound love of my life, just to wake up and see him in real life. You could almost hear the brakes of reality squeal as I hit the unforgiving brick wall of his absolute, and unwarranted, disdain toward me.
But Redd Hills was filled with more than just secrets, magic, and grumpy men. There, I have found Sarah and Bridget, my best friends, my coven. As we explored the truth of our power—descending from the Bone Coven, we painted deadly targets on our backs. Our life’s essence was exactly what the Blood Coven needed to unlock their own magic. Refusing to be victims, we dove headfirst into the sea of hidden treasure, untold stories, and dangers unknown.
If you like witchy and gothic vibes mixed with pirate lore , a little bit of spice, and great friendships then I have the book for you!
Raina, our FMC, finds herself moving to her mother’s hometown after her mom passes. You also meet her older brother Jeff, her younger brother RJ and her stepdad. I love the atmosphere that the author builds in her story full of gothic vibes, creepy happenings, and even familiars. New to the town, Raina meets Sarah and Bridget who help open her eyes to the town as well as the buried secrets and past that come with it.
What to Expect ~Witches ~Gothic Vibes ~Pirates ~Mystery ~Hidden Object ~Broody MMC ~Some Spice ~Magic ~Found Family ~Enemies to Lovers
I will say that at times the pacing could be a little slow and I felt there was some repetition but overall this was a very good debut novel that kept me entertained and I absolutely need to know what happens next!
”I will chose to drown with every beat of my heart, for all eternity if it means even the possibility of living during a lifetime in which you merely breathe”
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read an arc in exchange for an honest review!
ARC Review I always enjoy a good story of witchcraft and The Redd Key stands out among many, the witchcraft is not complicated or drawn out and the settings and language captured me again and again. I could have easily read this in one sitting, it’s unique, thrilling and engrossing!! I cannot wait for the next instalment 🖤🖤
ARC Review | 4 stars “My name is Raina Archer… and I just found out I’m a witch.” Okay, sold.
The Redd Key by V.L. Banx had me hooked from the first page! As an ARC reader, I was so excited to dive into this witchy, mysterious world—and it totally delivered.
Picture this: fog-drenched coves 🌫️, ancient magic ✨, a Soulbound hottie with serious attitude (but make it broody) 🌒, and a girl who goes from grad school to full-blown witch real quick. Raina’s journey is emotional, magical, and just the right amount of dangerous.
The vibes? Immaculate. The found family/coven bond between Raina, Sarah, and Bridget was one of my favorite parts—loyal, fierce, and full of heart 🩷. The magic system was super intriguing too, with just enough darkness to keep me on edge.
Some of the pacing in the beginning was a bit slow, but once things clicked into place, I was all in. If you love books with witchy lore, coastal gothic vibes, slow-burn enemies-to-lovers (kind of?), and strong female friendships—this one’s for you!
ARC review. Wooooowwwww. First of all, right off the bat, page one I was hooked and instantly drawn in. This book was so well written and it was incredibly easy to latch on and stay focused. Nothing excites me more than the witchy world (it’s the closest thing we have to actually fantasy on earth) and VL Banx did it justice in The Redd Key. Absolutely add to cart and read this book thats the first of a 4 part series. Chefs kiss!
BOOK REVIEW: I received this advanced reader copy and here is my honest review.
First of all, this book had me at one word "witch". Raina's story was full of intrigue, emotion and a journey that captivates you. I had never heard of the author, V.L. Banx, before this book but after reading this, I will 10000000000% be reading more.
The FMC, Raina had this normal college life but when she returns home, she finds out that the world of witches is actually real. Magic and curses are alive and I loved every second of it.
The launch of the story in the beginning is a little slow but once the story takes of...hold on. I also loved the relationship between Raina and her friends. That "found family" feel was amazing. Not to mention, the ending, well...all I can say is bring on the next book.
This book comes out April 26, 2025 and you want to add this to your must read list.
I am so grateful to be given the chance to review The Redd Key of my own accord, through being offered an eARC.
This book kept me guessing. The suspense and mystery was enthralling, I really wanted to know who the bad guy/s were.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I loved the unfolding of the characters and their magic. Finding out how they all fit together. Just amazing. I really can’t wait for the next instalment.
ARC Review: 4 stars! Ohhh boy this took me on a rollercoaster and I loved it!! Charmed meets Practical Magic meets Pirates of the Caribbean.
This book is great for those that want to get into more fantasy without having to worry about world building or confusing magic systems.
It seamlessly combined modern witchcraft with some of my favorite romance tropes while focusing on the mystery/adventure of it all. This all led to an entertaining, gripping, and alluring story that had me hooked from the beginning.
I LOVED this book! It's my first witchy fantasy and I must say, bonus points for it being set in my home state (Maine). Anyways, this story kept me hooked from the beginning. Found family, enemies to lovers, fated mates, witches, pirates, and loosely based off of history. I DEVOURED this book. Also, the twists and turns just kept coming and the tension you could cut with a knife. There's also a good amount of spice for the spice lovers 😈🌶️ I 10/10 recommend this book for anyone wanting to get into witchy fantasy or already is into it. Such a great first book to a 4 part series!
First off, I would like to say thank you to VL Banx and BookFunnel for the opportunity to review the ARC of The Redd Key: Bone Coven Book One. This is a great first novel from an emerging writer. The Redd Key easy to follow, incredibly descriptive, and pulls you in with the preview alone. 3.5/5 stars.
A few things you can expect: fast-paced plot development plot & character driven relatable dialogue complicated relationships rich lore based in historical fact twists, turns, & cliffhangers
VL Banx delivers a novel packed with entertainment for those who enjoy romance, witchcraft, and historically accurate piracy. Although I do not usually read spice or romance, it was used appropriately within the context of the story and the adult themes added further depth to the characters.
My only critique is that the storyline was a bit ambitious and I found the character development and setting a bit rushed for my taste. Keep in mind, you can tell this author is incredibly passionate about these characters and the world she has created in The Redd Key and I expect the follow up novels to be as just as bold and cunning as the first.
Congratulations VL Banx on your first novel. There is only more to come!
This witchy gothic vibed book was full of twists I did not see coming. Our FMC Raina just found out she’s a witch when she moves to a new town and finds out that curses are real and that they are all cursed. Her friendship with Sarah and Bridget are what makes this a five star read. To me, the romantic relationships were almost secondary even if it did help move the plot along. The ending of this book ruined me and I need the next one now.
I haven’t read anything fantasy witchy before but have to say I did enjoy it. Maybe in the beginning it was a bit slow but the more I read the more I couldn’t put it down. I loved the bond between raina, Bridget and Sarah. Going from college drop out to witch is a lot but seeing how it unfolded was great. I look forward to the next instalment
ARC Review! 10/10 The Redd Key captured my interest from chapter one! Honestly small town romance with witchy vibes could not have gotten any better than that! The story flowed so smoothly without the long backstories of each character before getting into the juicy reading! Would recommend to anyone looking to dip their toes into witchy romance with touches of history and mystery!
ARC Review I really liked the aesthetic of this book! It reminded me of my fav witchy shows and was super easy to get into. The plot twists, the friendship bonds, the self discovery, the tension between FMC and MMC, it’s all just WOW!! I need book two like asap because I’m so hooked. If you want dark gothic witchy vibes with a bit mystery and love, this is perfect for you.
ARC Review | Listen .. this book… is spectacular! The mystery, the friendships, the witchery, amazing! I was hooked and I’m sad it’s over…… for now anyway! It made me feel like I was right there with Raina and the crew for all their crazy adventures! 100% recommend you add this to your list or get to reading right now!
“I will choose to drown with every beat of my heart, for all eternity, if it means even the possibility of living during a lifetime in which you merely breathe.”
From the moment I started this book, I was obsessed. It was incredibly hard to put down. I love anything witchy and this was such a cool read. I’ve never personally read anything quite like it. I love the romance, the guessing, the girl power! If you’re a fan of Charmed or Practical Magic, you will love this book!

ARC review: Loved the New england lore incorporated in the story from Salem witches to piracy. Buried treasure, adventure, witches and hunters. This story is slow start with a fast paced ending leaving you wanting more. I read this in one sitting. The story was full of banter between friends. It was a fun read.
The Redd Key by VL Banx is one of those reads that leaves you flipping the last page and saying, “Wait, that’s it?” — not because it wasn’t satisfying, but because the cliffhanger hits hard. And maybe not in the best way. There’s a lot to like here: the world-building is vivid without being overwhelming. The story moves. The characters are layered enough to feel real — flawed, determined, and in some cases, genuinely surprising. I found myself invested, even when the plot leaned heavily into mystery without offering many answers. What really worked for me were the character dynamics, especially within the found-family chaos that makes up Raina’s circle. Raina is easily a standout — sharp-tongued, fiercely loyal, and constantly pulling everyone back from the brink, whether emotionally or literally. Sarah and Bridget, on the other hand, were a bit more slippery to pin down, and I mean that in a good way. Their motives aren't always clear in the beginning, and that tension added a lot of intrigue. Cole added some much-needed heart. His scenes were quieter but grounding — and honestly, without him, I don’t think Raina would’ve made it through the second act intact. And then there’s Griffin. I have complicated feelings about Griffin. He walks this razor-thin line between menace and melancholy, and just when I thought I had him figured out, he’d say or do something that made me question everything. Until he tried to kill the girls anyway. That said, the book does feel like a setup for something bigger rather than a fully contained story. The final chapters raise more questions than they resolve, and while that can be a good thing, here it felt a little abrupt. Not so much a door left open as one slammed shut with a note on it: “To be continued…” Despite my mixed feelings about the ending, I’m curious — maybe even eager — to see where the story goes next. So yes, I’d recommend it. Just know what you’re getting into: this isn’t a neat, tidy standalone. It’s the start of something — and it’s not afraid to leave you hanging.
I came across VL Bankx on my Instagram feed. The reel I watched was her pitching her new book and I was immediately hooked. The plot sounded amazing, the characters intriguing, and the vibe exactly what I love in my books. I am so glad I took a chance on VL, because this book is amazing. Her novel was everything she promoted to be and more. An amazing debut novel and amazing new author that is definitely on my must read author list now.
Raina is somewhat starting over. She’s just moved to her late mother’s hometown with her brother’s. VL doesn’t wait long to give readers gothic vibes, somewhat creepy moments, and the feel that something isn’t right. As we learn more about Raina and the happenings that surround her, a big secret comes to light. Raina is a witch and never knew. Raina finds herself immersed into a world full of magic and characters she never thought she would encounter.
Once this information comes to light, Raina’s journey is full of ups and downs, real emotions, and learning to trust herself and her new found power. The historical accuracy within this urban fantasy was done very well too. It is clear that VL took her time to research the characters she puts in her books. She blended the non-fiction with fiction beautifully, while adding nuance to the story that really made it pop.
VL writes a book that surrounds you with magic, romance, and wonderful characters. The friendships that Raina develops throughout this book are real and fierce. The bonds that are created, I hope, are seen throughout this series and elements in future books by VL. It is evident she put her heart and soul into this book and everything she created within its pages. I am beyond excited to watch her continue to write and grow as an author.
As always, review any author notes before reading.
What to Expect: 🌹Found Family ✨Enemies to Lovers 🌹Witchcraft ✨Real History 🌹Hidden Objects ✨Morally Grey Characters 🌹Soulmates
Where do I even start with this magical chaos? Reading The Redd Key felt like sipping spiked cider on Halloween night while riding shotgun in the Mystery Machine—except the van is cursed, your GPS is haunted, and your cat’s judging your every move.
VL Banx somehow blends The Craft, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Practical Magic, then sprinkles in Scooby-Doo shenanigans and a touch of dark academia. And it works. Against all odds, it freaking works.
We meet Raina, Bridget, and Sarah—instant BFFs, witchy soulmates, and the kind of girl gang you’d summon demons with and then go out for brunch. Their chemistry is everything, and watching them step into their powers while unearthing the lore of Red Hill is chef’s kiss.
Now let’s talk characters: • Cole: I can’t say much without spoilers, but let’s just say if “tall, dark, and makes questionable choices by candlelight” is your thing? Buckle up. The waters are choppy, and I was not emotionally prepared. • Griffin: If you read Fourth Wing, he’s Jack Barlowe’s evil twin, and yes, I loathed him on sight. Peak menace. 0/10, would push into a portal. • Jeff: Aloof, protective brother with just enough mystery to make me scream “BOOK TWO NOW” at the sky. • Nathan: Cringy professor energy, suspiciously involved. I don’t trust him. I need more lore. Also, VL Banx, I see what you’re doing and I want more.
This was easily one of my favorite reads this year. The vibes? Immaculate. The magic? Delicious. The secrets? Deep and full of potential for a sequel I’m already manifesting.
Go read it. Just trust me. You’ll laugh, gasp, side-eye a character or two, and probably yell “WHAT?!” at least once.

Tropes: enemies to lovers, morally grey, found family, witchcraft, soulmates, longing
First of all, shoutout to author V.L. Banx for absolutely crushing it with The Redd Key! This was my very first ARC ever, and what a wild ride it was — a perfect blend of witchy vibes, pirate magic, mystery, and chaos (aka everything I love). She was the nicest and friendliest person ever🫶🫶🥰
Not gonna lie, the start was a little slow for me — but once it picked up?? BABE. I was GONE. Locked in. Eyes glued to my iPad like my life depended on it in the middle of the night. And the plot twists were TWISTING. I’m not even kidding; I texted her - “It’s not even 1 am and the way I shot out of my bed.”
The atmosphere she created was so vivid — the kind where you can *feel* the salty sea air, smell the ancient magic, and hear the chaos of pirate ships creaking in the dark. It gave a cozy *and* mysterious vibe at the same time, which is honestly so rare to find.
Also, can we talk about the way the magic system was so unique?? And the little hints of darkness and secrets sprinkled throughout?? Ugh, chef’s kiss. She somehow made it feel whimsical and dangerous and heartfelt all at once. And the characters?? Loved their energy — a little messy, a little chaotic, but so, so easy to root for.
The Redd Key was the type of story that sneaks up on you — it reels you in slowly and then BOOM, you're fully obsessed without even realizing it. It’s one of those books you’ll be thinking about even after you turn the last page.
Thank you so much to V.L. Banx for letting me be part of this incredible adventure. I’m literally stalking for your next book already.
If you love pirates, witches, magic, secret keys, cursed ships, and a *side of unhinged chaos,* GO READ THIS. You won’t regret it.
V L Banx's The Redd Key, first book in The Bone Coven series, is based upon a true story. Black Sam Bellamy was a pirate, and he was a contemporary of Blackbeard. He had a lover in Wellfleet and his fleet sank off of Cape Cod. Banx takes this blip in history and builds a wonderful world around it. Herbs and spells, familiars, and witches learning to survive by the seat of their pants. The plot is fast paced. It grabs you right from the start. Raina spends a good portion of the book either disbelieving or unprepared for her destiny. Raina moves through life sleepwalking, grieving but unable to express her grief. Her family dynamic is pretty skewered, her brothers and step-father also overwhelmed by their loss. Bridget and Sarah are very strong characters and the found family and sisterhood they find was the strongest part of the book. The mystery plot wasn't the strongest, I knew who Cole was even before they officially met. But there are enough twists and turns in the storyline to keep you guessing. The cliff hanger was both 'knew that was going to happen' and 'Wow, I didn't see coming'. It was an enjoyable and absorbing read. V L Banx is a new author for me and I can't wait for what comes next. I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my review.
🌟🌟🌟🌟.5 🌶️🌶️🌶️ The opening chapter will draw you right in, and not let you go. This book is stocked with ancient lore, mysteries and magic. Every page brings another layer to the story as it gets unraveled, but adds another question of “what the fuck is happening?”. There’s complicated relationships that aren’t exactly stated but one can read between the lines. I enjoyed figuring out exactly how the past and the legends align with what was happening day to day in the book.
It’s really about Raina, and her navigating the path that was thrust upon her at birth- not just from her mom’s side but her dad’s. The sisterhood and the magic is the subplot and the romance is minor but it is plot because it’s an element in her life that she will need to deal with at some point but it not the driving force in the book. The history, the ancient lore and her navigating her magic with her sisters is the book. Speaking of sisters, I really loved was the sisterhood between the girls, and the humor in the book. I highly recommend this book to people that like lore, magic, enemies to lovers and found family!
The Redd Key by V.L. Banx is a new adult fantasy novel set in modern day Maine. After the tragic death of her mother Raina leaves college just before she graduates her Master’s program and moves to the town her mother grew up in. There she learns that witches and urban legends are more real than she thought. The past collides with the present as secrets are unraveled. Fans of Bewitched and The Discovery of Witches will love this book.
The characters are approachable and well developed. As a reader you are able to connect with them. They are described in such a way that you can picture them in your mind’s eye. The plot is captivating, suspenseful, intriguing, and fast paced. I could not put the book down. Banx’s writing style is comfortable to read. It is perfect for when you need a book that is easy but keeps your attention. There are lots of twists and turns and The Redd Key will leave you wanting to read the next one!
The Redd Key sings with profound spirit,a real page turner exploring the consequences of deep family legacy, new found family, soul wrenching love, sacred bonds, and curses that leaves scars cut deep. Rich and wholeheartedly poignant, It grabs and pulls, wrapping you into every page.
The FMC Raina is on a whole other level on her own with a small family she cherishes after her deep loss and her new found sister hood (Bridget & Sarah) who are a hoot. As this trio Unites they unravel family legends, mysteries and secrets while facing new found adventures, fun and unseen danger.
As the FMC finds her footing she is thrown into the world of Griffin and Cole..one who has her heart being a complete stranger with ties unbinding and one who is mysterious and cunning..who will win out and who will be the end of her? An entrancing world, a foreboding curse, that will certainly linger….Over the cliff edge.
This one checked so many of my favorite boxes: grief and magic, a small town pulsing with secrets, and that dreamy sense of being almost on the edge of another world. The Redd Key is lush, romantic, and slightly haunted in all the best ways. The author leans into atmosphere with velvet-glove confidence. The prose is textured, a little dramatic, sometimes even indulgent, but it works for the story she’s telling. If you’re the kind of reader who loves soft fonts, rose motifs, and soulmate magic with a shadowy edge, you’ll be right at home here.
Is it perfect? No, but it’s deeply felt. Earnest. And honestly, that’s what drew me in. I kept highlighting lines that felt like spells: tender, gothic, and a little bit tragic. I think it speaks to readers craving something quietly powerful and deeply romantic.
Ok WOW! I finished this last night and I still got alot of questions and so many thoughts! First of all, I'm so glad I got to ARC read this book. Mysteries? Yes please. Witchy? Double yes! For me, this did start off slow, I'm not sure if it just wasn't what I needed to read at the time, but it did take me a few days to get into this book - but once I did - I had to keep reading. FMC Raina, has just lost her mother, dropped out of college and moved with her step-dad and siblings to her mother's hometown. There she learns of the islands history, the lore of the early settlers and a pirate named Sam Bellamy. O and also she's a witch... It really picked up for me about the 50% point - the different twists and turns that happen to move the story along are well thought out and you see the progression of the various parts of the plot. This is just book one and we do get a cliffhanger! I have lots of questions left, there's lots of characters that haven't been explored and I can't wait for book 2! Pick this one up friends!
ARC Review This book was everything. A heart-pounding ride from start to finish, packed with real historical detail, witchcraft, and a bond that felt destined yet dangerously impossible. The way the author wove true events into the story gave it this grounded, eerie authenticity that made the magic feel real.
There wasn’t a single moment that dragged. Every chapter peeled back more secrets. The tension just kept building, like a storm I knew was coming but still wasn’t ready for.
And somehow, in the middle of all the chaos and darkness, the comedic relief was perfectly timed and exactly what I needed throughout all of the intense moments.
And the ending? I’m still recovering. I need book two NOW!!!
Congrats to V.L. Banx for writing her debut novel! From one writer to another this is awesome to see!
3.85 stars out of 5. This is my first arc ever! Woohoo! I think it would be bumped to a 4 if the start wasn't slow. I liked charmed and I like jack sparrow vibes. So I pushed through and made sure to finish. I am glad I did. Such a cool story. Her prose and style of writing is very good so that probably helped me push that beginning part. The end of book info reveals were very good. I am also glad that the "note" at the end gives another "angle" of tension to see later on. It also don't typically like romantasy as a trope, but I enjoyed those parts in this book. It didn't feel forced. The best part of the book was the coven. Excellent bond writing.
