Bora Chung już nie raz udowodniła, że świetnie czuje się nie tylko w krótkich formach, ale przede wszystkim w łączeniu różnych gatunków na przestrzeni tych krótkich form. „Rozkład północy” to opowieść nieoczywista, ukazująca historię instytutu badawczego, w którym przeprowadzane są eksperymenty nad jeszcze bardziej nieoczywistymi przedmiotami. Autorka, aby nadać opowiadaniom nieco bardziej fantastycznego wymiaru, postanowiła połączyć ze sobą horror, science fiction, a takze fantasy. Surrealistyczny charakter wprowadza czytelnika w stan wielkiej niepewności, a jednocześnie zaprasza go do zagłębienia się w historię bohaterów. Co więcej, jak zawsze, czujemy dużą nutę groteski i dziwności, za co osobiście tak bardzo cenię jej twórczość. Wielokrotnie polecam Wam wszystkie książki, wychodzące spod jej pióra, a w tym wypadku myślę, że będzie to idealna pozycja to rozpoczęcia swojej przygody z literaturą południowokoreańską, ze względu na swoją niepowtarzalność i płynny, angażujący styl pisania. The narrator is a night watchman (watch person?) at a mysterious institute that houses cursed objects….an employees often don’t last long there. Through various short tales you’ll visit rooms with a haunted handkerchief, a cursed sneaker and a very interesting cat.
Each haunting is an allegory for something bigger in the real world which is very clear within the tale. I found these to be typical Korean ghost stories, at least from what I have seen; objects seem to play a big role. The book itself is very short, but there are some nice stories here; I particularly enjoyed “Tunnel” and the hopeful end of the entire book. In the Afterword the author explains some of the motivation behind the tales and notes that ghost stories are a great cure for writers’ block.

This collection was not as bizarre as “Cursed Bunny.” Centered mostly around a “research center for haunted objects” and the employees that work there, most of the scares are spirit and ghost related. But there’s still some cruelty and violence to be found as well.
The first story was fun, creepy, and even kind of reminded me a tiny bit of the office from “Severance” but with a ghostly element. The objects themselves and the reverence with which they’re treated by the employees also made me think of one of my favorite video games, “Control.”
The second story was confusing because none of the characters had names and it involved not only a large, extended family but other people as well. I had a tough time figuring out who was who and keeping track of what was happening. This problem continued throughout the collection, but I found it to be the most prevalent here.
“The Silence of the Sheep” was my favorite story, until it wasn’t. Honestly, I could have done without the violence against women and animals throughout this collection. Typically I just expect that in horror and sometimes I think I might even be a little numb to it but I think I’m in a sensitive headspace right now. (Fellow cat lovers especially be wary.)
I think I enjoyed the experience of being inside the research center the most. It felt dreamlike and strange, and while the various rooms and objects held different stories I felt like a couple of them took me a bit too far from the building at times.
I appreciated the insightful and informative afterword. I wish more story collections included those.

powiem szczerze, że bałam się czytać 'rozklad północy' po zmroku, a na owce i tenisówki już nigdy nie spojrze tak samo...
bora chung straszy po prostu genialnie, ale - co najważniejsze - horror przeplata z palącymi kwestiami społecznymi i robi to w najlepszy możliwy sposób, pełen empatii i szacunku. już czytając 'sny umarłych' byłam pod ogromnym wrażeniem jej wrażliwości i pozostaję absolutnie zachwycona.

My first Bora Chung, and I immediately understood what all the fuss is about. Creepy, weird, and loose. There is plot horror and vibes horror and here the balance leans more heavily towards vibes. But the small stories here all sucked me in, kept me going from one to the next. Chung has a sensibility that feels both modern and ancient, these stories are like fairy tales critiquing capitalism. I thoroughly enjoyed my journey through the Institute and I will definitely be reading more Chung.

No nie zagrało między nami, wspólny motyw łączący opowiadania wydawał się ciekawy, ale poszczególne historie przyprawiły mnie o co najwyżej wzruszenie ramion. Przeklęte przedmioty i duchy to nie moja bajka, ale miałem nadzieję, że Bora opisze to w ciekawszy i bardziej angażujący sposób, a jednak się wynudziłem.

Nigdy nie sądziłam, że wzruszę się książką o obiekcie badawczym, który przytrzymuje nawiedzone byty, ale oto jestem.
Rozkład Północy to według mnie wyjątkowy utwór. Początkowe historie wydają się proste z czasem jednak każdy rozdział dokłada swoją cegiełkę dziwności i unikatowych opowieści.
Nie jest to lektura specjalnie straszna (dobra, moment z butem mnie przestraszył, ale ja bardzo boję się obuwia), klimat jest zachowany i jest to coś, co uwielbiam. Ci, co kiedyś zaczną czytać, wspomną moje słowa, jak będą co rozdział wytrzeszczać oczy i zakrywać usta dłonią ze zdziwienia.

Après avoir adoré Lapin maudit de la même autrice, j’avais vraiment hâte de découvrir ce nouveau recueil que j’ai bien apprécié dans l’ensemble. Maintenant est-ce que je l’ai trouvé aussi bon que Lapin maudit ? Peut-être pas.

Ce qu’il faut savoir, c’est que ce recueil est en fait un fixup, c’est à dire un ensemble de nouvelles interconnectées. En l’occurrence, on parle ici d’« objets » maudits (pour moi on est plus sur des animaux maudits que sur des objets mais admettons) qui sont tous stockés dans un institut assez étrange.

Dans l’idée ça m’allait bien mais dans les faits, j’avais parfois l’impression que le lien entre les différentes nouvelles était un peu artificiel, un peu forcé. Je trouve que pour la plupart, les nouvelles auraient été aussi efficaces, peut-être plus même, si l’autrice n’avait pas tenu absolument à les connecter. D’autant plus que ça passait parfois par des répétitions un peu intempestives de certains schémas.

Ceci étant dit, ça n’enlève rien à la qualité des nouvelles prises individuellement. Il y en a bien une qui ne m’a pas parlé du tout (pour moi c’est systématique dans n’importe quel recueil de nouvelles) mais l’ensemble était vraiment bon. Comme dans Lapin maudit, les nouvelles sont souvent très engagées, généralement assez bizarres, et parfois vraiment inquiétantes. Personnellement, c’est tout ce que j’attendais donc je suis pleinement satisfait de ce côté là !

Malgré mon petit bémol concernant le format fixup, c’est donc plutôt une belle réussite pour moi et je vous encourage vraiment à découvrir cette autrice. Et si vous ne l’avez pas encore découvert, vous pourrez même enchaîner avec Lapin maudit qui est sorti en poche en même temps que ce nouveau recueil !

Uwielbiam Borę Chung i jedyne, co mi w tej książce przeszkadza to to, że jest za krótka. Pierwsze opowiadania naprawdę mnie przeraziły, kolejne nie powodowały już ciarek na plecach, a jedynie ubolewanie nad ludzką naturą. Książka do pochłonięcia w jeden/dwa wieczory i wywołująca w czytelniku wiele różnych emocji. Proszę o więcej!

If I’m reading Chung correctly, her critique of issues that are important to her activism (e.g., social justice, sexual rights, labor laws) is subtler in Midnight Timetable. Nevertheless, Chung nods in agreement with an award organizer, who perceives “[t]hat science fiction has always been political.”
In Midnight Timetable, Chung covers ideas such as physical disability, femicide, and monetary greed. The seven pared-back short stories reflect a sit-com setup where the main characters and setting remain constant, and their “lesson of the day” changes per episode. We follow the perspective of an unnamed character who begins working rounds at a secretive research institute for haunted objects, and their sunbae trains them on the go. When things go awry in the eerie stories, the intricacies of the center and its elusive haunted items get explained.
For example, Handkerchief is a twisted tale of parental codependency resulting in a spoiled younger son causing mayhem because he can’t inherit his late mother’s handkerchief. In Blue Bird, a seamstress, adopted by a humble pauper couple who find the baby with an embroidered handkerchief, exacts revenge on the haughty prince. In my favorite of the bunch, Silence of the Sheep, a woman protects herself and her daughter from her husband, who problematically gambles. To prevent her daughter from inheriting his debt, she leaves him and begins making money as a psychic with the help of supernatural sheep, who randomly appear to her to help her answer customers’ questions.
Chung includes commentary on her pieces at the end of the collection, averring that her ghost stories aren’t mysteries or thrillers. I found the writing—so perhaps the translation (no shade to Hur)—clunky at times, which I found mildly distracting. But I can’t read Korean, so maybe the translation (e.g., “She . . . did not exactly have the gift of the gab”) matches the heart of Chung’s original. Either way, the writing and the fragmented stories might have prevented me from embracing the stories to the extent that I prefer, which is why I enjoyed Silence of the Sheep the most (i.e., it is less sparse). I look forward to reading the pros’ thoughts for clarity!

3.75 rounding up to 4 - I quite enjoyed this! It's my least favorite Bora Chung to date, but only barely, and mainly because the concept and premise of this is so fun and interesting, and the stories themselves were entertaining, but at 180 pages it was far, far too short, and the time we spent in the actual institute was so little.
I like how Bora blends social commentary and highlights societal ills in Korea alongside the supernatural and paranormal, and here through these allegorical ghost tales she succeeds, for the most part, in getting her points across in an insightful but entertaining way.
On brand for her, these stories are definitely dark and there is potentially triggering content for the casual reader, but if you're familiar with her already, these stories are a breeze to get through, both in terms of content and darkness factor. You can tell she just wanted to have a good time writing ghost stories, and that's reflected here.

Podobało mi się. Były to opowiadania w trochę w innym tonie, niż te w "Przeklętym króliczku".
Były na swój sposób lżejsze, jeżeli chodzi o pierwiastek straszności/dziwności, za to były cięższe (chociaż możliwe, że "głębsze" byłoby lepszym określeniem) w aspekcie ludzkim.
Generalnie były one jakoś dziwnie przyjemne i zawierały sporo ciepłych elementów jak na opowiadania grozy lol. Cozy horror stories.
Wydaję mi się też, że pióro pisarki stało się leszcze lepsze. Czytało się to bardzo płynnie.

Obecnie na polskim rynku wydawniczym jest coraz więcej nowości z krajów takich jak Korea czy Japonia. Przyznam szczerze, że niezmiernie mnie to cieszy i mam nadzieję, że na naszych półkach pojawi się znacznie więcej tego typu książek. Dlaczego? Tytuły na które do tej pory trafiłam były niesamowicie oryginalne, niosły ze sobą swego rodzaju “mądrość,” były przytulne i ciepłe. Z drugiej strony, trafiając na azjatycką grozę miałam przyjemność poznać szalone, nowatorskie pomysły, które nie jeden raz pozostawiły mnie z myślą “Wow, to było po prostu chore – kocham te historie!”
Kiedy tylko zobaczyłam zapowiedź książki “Rozkład Północy” autorstwa Bory Chung wiedziałam, że muszę dostać ją w swoje ręce. Przyciągnęła mnie swoją piękną, artystyczną okładką i oczywiście opisem, obiecującym nam opowiadania przepełnione grozą i fantasy, w których znajdziemy nie tylko rozrywkę ale i drugie, głębsze dno wprawiające czytelnika w zadumę. Przewracając ostatnią stronę i kończąc finałowe opowiadanie byłam oczarowana oraz wzruszona historiami, które mogłam poznać.
Każde opowiadanie jest według mnie utrzymane w magicznym, baśniowym klimacie, w którym przewijają się mściwe, nieszczęśliwe zjawy, przeklęte przedmioty, nieludzkie zbrodnie i swego rodzaju fatum. Jeżeli szukacie tylko i wyłącznie książek z działu grozy czy też fantastyki myślę, że będziecie zadowoleni. Bora Chung to jednak nie tylko pisarka ale również działająca aktywistka, dlatego pod osłoną opowieści niesamowitych znajdziemy tutaj szereg problemów, które dotyczą nie tylko społeczeństwa koreańskiego ale i nas samych.
Pomimo tego, że historie są napisane jasnym i klarownym językiem mogą nie być proste w odbiorze. Znajdziemy w nich wiele tematów, potrafiących wzbudzić w odbiorcy uczucie złości lub bezradności oraz wycisnąć z oczu łzy – dyskryminacja, maltretowanie zwierząt, przemoc wobec kobiet czy też toksyczne relacje rodzinne. Mimo tego, że (przynajmniej w moim odczuciu) autorka starała się wyłożyć czytelnikowi dane problemy w sposób raczej delikatny, pamiętajcie, że każdy z nas ma swój “próg bólu” i niektóre z nich mogą wami wstrząsnąć. Wielkim plusem ode mnie jest również to, że Bora Chung nie poruszyła jedynie tematów antropocentrycznych, ale zawarła również te dotyczące zwierząt – jeśli mnie znacie, wiecie, że tego typu motywy są dla mnie szczególnie drażniące i bolesne. Nawet jeżeli jesteście wrażliwi na tym punkcie, polecam przełamać się i spróbować je poznać. Opowiadania “Milczenie Owiec” oraz “Kotek” poruszają bowiem bardzo ważne tematy jak testy laboratoryjne, wykorzystanie zwierząt podczas rytuałów czy ich dręczenie. Polecałabym również podsunąć je osobom, które nie zastanawiały się jeszcze nad tymi problemami a chcielibyście obudzić w nich tego rodzaju świadomość.
“Rozkład Północy” to tytuł, który może mnie nie przestraszył (pamiętajcie jednak, że jestem już związana z horrorem od wielu, wielu lat) ale ujął mnie klimatem swojej baśniowości, wzruszył i niesamowicie zaciekawił przedstawionymi fantastycznymi motywami. Z czystym sumieniem polecam wam sięgnąć po ten niepozornie wyglądający zbiorek opowiadań i zakochać się w nim, tak jak to było w moim przypadku.
Kiedy tylko zobaczyłam zapowiedź książki “Rozkład Północy” autorstwa Bory Chung wiedziałam, że muszę dostać ją w swoje ręce. Przyciągnęła mnie swoją piękną, artystyczną okładką i oczywiście opisem, obiecującym nam opowiadania przepełnione grozą i fantasy, w których znajdziemy nie tylko rozrywkę ale i drugie, głębsze dno wprawiające czytelnika w zadumę. Przewracając ostatnią stronę i kończąc finałowe opowiadanie byłam oczarowana oraz wzruszona historiami, które mogłam poznać.
Każde opowiadanie jest według mnie utrzymane w magicznym, baśniowym klimacie, w którym przewijają się mściwe, nieszczęśliwe zjawy, przeklęte przedmioty, nieludzkie zbrodnie i swego rodzaju fatum. Jeżeli szukacie tylko i wyłącznie książek z działu grozy czy też fantastyki myślę, że będziecie zadowoleni. Bora Chung to jednak nie tylko pisarka ale również działająca aktywistka, dlatego pod osłoną opowieści niesamowitych znajdziemy tutaj szereg problemów, które dotyczą nie tylko społeczeństwa koreańskiego ale i nas samych.
Pomimo tego, że historie są napisane jasnym i klarownym językiem mogą nie być proste w odbiorze. Znajdziemy w nich wiele tematów, potrafiących wzbudzić w odbiorcy uczucie złości lub bezradności oraz wycisnąć z oczu łzy – dyskryminacja, maltretowanie zwierząt, przemoc wobec kobiet czy też toksyczne relacje rodzinne. Mimo tego, że (przynajmniej w moim odczuciu) autorka starała się wyłożyć czytelnikowi dane problemy w sposób raczej delikatny, pamiętajcie, że każdy z nas ma swój “próg bólu” i niektóre z nich mogą wami wstrząsnąć. Wielkim plusem ode mnie jest również to, że Bora Chung nie poruszyła jedynie tematów antropocentrycznych, ale zawarła również te dotyczące zwierząt – jeśli mnie znacie, wiecie, że tego typu motywy są dla mnie szczególnie drażniące i bolesne. Nawet jeżeli jesteście wrażliwi na tym punkcie, polecam przełamać się i spróbować je poznać. Opowiadania “Milczenie Owiec” oraz “Kotek” poruszają bowiem bardzo ważne tematy jak testy laboratoryjne, wykorzystanie zwierząt podczas rytuałów czy ich dręczenie. Polecałabym również podsunąć je osobom, które nie zastanawiały się jeszcze nad tymi problemami a chcielibyście obudzić w nich tego rodzaju świadomość.

These strange and unsettling stories take place at a mysterious research institute of haunted objects, and each story focuses on someone who works there or an object inside. Through these allegorical stories of haunted objects--and people--Chung addresses issues like domestic abuse and conversion therapy as well as greed, jealousy, and revenge, among others. My favorite stories were "You Can't Come in Here", "Handkerchief", and "The Silence of the Sheep."

Jest gdzieś instytut badawczy, w którym dzieją się niezwykłe rzeczy. Tam lepiej trzymać się swoich obowiązków, nie wtykać nosa w sprawy, które nas nie dotyczą. Nie zastanawiać się, dlaczego pewnych drzwi lepiej nie otwierać, dlaczego zza innych dobiegają dziwne dźwięki, no i dlaczego znienacka pojawia się wysoki mężczyzna w garniturze z plakietką, z której nic nie można odczytać. Koniecznie też trzeba wziąć sobie do serca radę: "Nie oglądaj się. Jeśli napotkasz ich wzrok, zaczną za tobą podążać".
Bora Chung lubi snuć opowieści o duchach i umie to robić - co pokazała w dwóch poprzednich książkach. Tu też jest mrocznie i strasznie, tu przedmioty mają magiczne właściwości, tu zmarli wracają, by pozałatwiać swoje sprawy. Nie jest to jednak tylko horror o zjawiskach nadprzyrodzonych, bo autorka zręcznie wplata wątki przemocy w rodzinie, nierówności społecznych, jest tu też magia i historia.

c’est étonnamment pas ce à quoi je m’attendais. je partais avec l’idée d’un horreur très organique/body horror pour une raison qui m’échappe encore mais ce n’est finalement pas du tout le cas. c’est de l’horreur très « douce » où l’étrange est admis pour le.a lecteur.ice et où ce n’est pas tellement le propos finalement.
c’est à la fois un outil pour parler de certains sujets et à la fois un vrai ressort scénaristique. c’est jamais au premier plan mais c’est toujours là quelque part et finalement c’est ce qui fait que j’ai beaucoup aimé! il ne s’agit pas de comprendre, d’avoir des réponses mais plutôt de vivre un moment un peu hors-temps.
les nouvelles sont introduites par une sorte de fil rouge et il peut y avoir des correspondances mais elles sont quand même relativement indépendantes et cet aspect collection m’a beaucoup plu. on est vraiment détaché de ce qu’il s’y passe mais ça accentue ce côté extérieur, un peu curiosité mal placée…

What I appreciated most was how the interconnected setting gave the stories a unifying thread, making the entire collection feel like a single, evolving narrative rather than a set of disjointed pieces. As a fan of Asian horror—particularly Korean horror—I found Midnight Timetable encapsulates that trademark eeriness so well. Rather than leaning into excessive gore, it masterfully cultivates an unsettling mood that lingers long after you’ve turned the final page.

I’m a little freak for the interconnected short story cycle - if only because they’re so rare - and this delivered admirably. Loosely or not, every story linked back to this Institute for Haunted Objects (strong SCP/control vibes but gentler and quirkier) and provides a really strong sense of cohesion, especially when stories where haunted objects wreak havoc are followed by tales about their origins. Without much direct effort, Chung builds a fascinating world of little hauntings and invokes the cyclical nature of greed and violence through their reoccurrences. There is also a continual sense of kindness and reverence to these hauntings exemplified by the final two stories that genuinely affected me a little - haunted objects deserve some sunshine too.
While this collection didn’t reach the same great heights that Cursed Bunny’s best stories achieved, it was more consistent with its achievements and I really appreciated the overarching structure. Would definitely recommend it to most as a quick, immersive read.

We follow the narrator, knowing only that they work at an institute for haunted items. Employees don’t tend to last long working here, for multiple reasons, but we follow the narrator on their night shift, being told about some select items and how they became haunted.
The stories are creepy, unsettling and yet sometimes a little heartwarming. The stories are not related but flow well and I devoured this in just shy of two days.
I don’t usually read acknowledgements or afterwords but in this book, it was definitely worth the read. The insight on each story and how Bora Chung found the ideas for them was very interesting.

Midnight Timetable is a fun collection of connected short stories, all stories revolving around an institution where they research haunted things. Some of the stories really engaged me and made me want to continue reading, others were a bit of a chore. I really liked the handkerchief story and the long tunnel.
I wanted to read this because I really loved Cursed Bunny, but Midnight Timetable didn't work in the same way for me. I do think these stories were fun and I liked the author's notes at the end.

Zbiory opowiadań to nie jest może moja ulubiona forma, zazwyczaj szybko wylatują mi z pamięci, ale literatura azjatycka ma w sobie coś takiego specyficznego, że ciężko o niej zapomnieć. Zobaczymy jak będzie w tym przypadku. Większość opowiadań bardzo mi się podobała, taki nieco oniryczny i nieoczywisty rodzaj grozy, to coś co lubię.

Pod technicznym punktem bardzo łatwo się czyta, ale fabularnie potrafi wjechać na głowę (lowk bałam się czytać w nocy). Sposób w jaki przedstawione są te historie sprawia że potrzebuje chwili na przetrawienie po każdym rozdziale.
Polecam każdemu jako bardziej investing lekturę (chociaż jest krótka) (krótkie zawsze są lepsze)

Miałem ochotę na coś nie długiego, coś ciekawego, coś co poruszy zębatki w moim mózgu, no coś dobrego. Bora Chung poraz drugi mnie nie zawiodła!!
Opowiadania mimo, że były krótkie to jakie wciągające, jakie pełne emocji, jakie wow! Totalnie mój klimat.
