Zoey's Memory

Rate this book
At just fifteen years old, Zoey saw her mother take her last breath after ending her six-year battle with cancer. Ever since that day, she didn't think anything else could make her feel broken.

But ten years later, her world turns upside down when she wakes up in an unfamiliar bed with no memory of what happened the day before. Her feet ache, her clothes are gone and her hair is tangled. Then hours later, she meets the head Doctor who tells Zoey that she is not allowed to leave on her own.

Zoey’s Memory is a light mystery about mental health and grief that relates to those who have dealt with the death of a parent - especially those who have at a young age.

This book is a quick, light read about a girl who wakes up in her town's mental hospital. The only catch-- she has no idea what happened the day before she got there. Zoey has lost one single day from her memory and can't seem to figure out why.

This book follows Zoey as she acclimates to life in a psych ward, while simultaneously trying to recall the day that has left her mind. She is a highly motivated individual and has been left angry and frustrated by her situation. At some points I felt like I was right with her, ready to fight Dr. Hall for her freedom. I liked that this book had comic relief, despite being about some dark topics. I think the hospital was portrayed accurately and I liked the book's fast pace.

I found the process of Zoey recalling her memories interesting and I enjoyed that it happened in a few different ways. However, I thought the side characters were flat and I would have liked for them to be a bit more complex. I understand that this story was solely about Zoey's self-discovery, but since the side characters were important to the plot, I wish they would have been written with more layers.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and it didn't take me long to read. I think this would be good for people who are just getting into reading or are looking for something quick and light after a big book.

Zoey's Memory is a mystery about a young woman who forgets one day of her life, resulting in her being put in hospital. I don't want to say anymore about the plot, as I know I will spoil something! However, I will say that I really enjoyed this book, and found that it was the sort of novel that you can read very quickly and very easily. The book takes you through just over two weeks, and each chapter is a day of the year- each chapter is then split into different times of that day! Due to this, I found that the book was fast-paced and that every time you meant to stop reading, it was easy to carry on, thinking, 'I'll just get to the end of this chapter...' or you might think, 'I'll just read what happens at 2 p.m. and then stop...'- but you won't! The writing is clear, you get to know the characters very quickly, and you just want to keep reading! This is a Young Adult novel, but it is also suitable for adults. With a good balance between description and action, I would highly recommend this book. Please bear in mind that there are themes of grief, anxiety and mental health.
Thank you so much to the author for sending me a review copy of your book!

This story was definitely a page turner. I kept reading because I was so interested in the mystery of why Zoey ended up in the mental health ward of the hospital. The mystery surrounding her missing memory was very intriguing and while I thought there was going to be a crazy plot twist, that is not what happened and I might have liked it better this way. A good story about mental health and dealing with grief. I do wish that we got to know a bit more about the other patients in the ward as they were mostly just stereotypes and one dimensional. Overall an easy and unique read for young adults wanting a story about mental health that’s not too dark.

I found this to be a very light, but good read. The book was very realistic and it brought me back to my days in the psych ward. I related with the character well and felt all the emotions she did. I wanted to know what happened to the character so I was intrigued. I'm happy the book wasn't full of drama as psych wards are fairly calm places, but at the same time I kinda strived for some more conflict in the beginning of the book. For anyone who has not been to a psych ward this book depicts the atmosphere very well. The psychiatrists are exactly how they are described in the book. The pill pushing is such a reality. I really enjoyed the ending of the book and how the author conveys what the character learned from their experience. This book would be so helpful to those who have lost someone special in their lives or overwork themself. Very well written book!!

I was expecting some major twist ending but it turned out to just be a heartwarming ending of coming to terms with what life throws at you. It was still an enjoyable read. Check triggers (ie cancer, death, mental illness)
