I grew up in the small town of Issaquah, Washington, in the Squak Valley about 13 miles East of Seattle. It was and is an idyllic place in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. The town and valley are nestled between three low lying mountains, Squak, Cougar and Tiger, all lush evergreen forests.

After High School I enlisted in the U.S. Army and served a three-year tour in Germany. After my military service I commenced on a career in financial services which ultimately led to a specialty in project finance for the sports and entertainment industries.

My career included financing throughout the U.S. for professional leagues, teams and sports facilities along with many college and university stadiums and arenas. Along the way I also financed for radio and TV studios, music centers, concert halls and theatrical venues plus film and movie production studios and facilities.

I retired in 2017 beginning a new chapter in the world of amateur golf where I learned patience and humility. Although I had written and published industry articles my first serious attempt at historical fiction was “The Stranger in Me - Adventures in Squak Valley”.

I followed that with the non-fiction book, "A New View of You - Inspiration, Motivation and Love", published February 3rd, 2025.

I am married to my wife Pam. Originally from Canada she is an Operating Room Nurse. Pam is my first reader and editor. My children and grandchildren are scattered in the Pacific Northwest at North Bend, Poulsbo and Bellingham, Washington. Pam and I reside in Palm Desert, California.

Review of The Stranger in Me rec’d 2-12-2025

Russ Munson - I just finished your book. I loved it and savored every description of Issaquah, your time at school, your teachers and friends. I could picture it so well in my mind and it brought back so many memories. I would go to bed at night and have dreams of my school days living there. Next time I'm over to the west side I will be making a stop in Issaquah to refamiliarize myself with all you described (although I know a lot of it is no longer there). The old high school/Jr. high school on the hill - my great grandfather helped build that way back when. That always made me feel a part of it. I hope you plan to write a second book detailing "Roy's" time in the service. Thank you so much for this wonderful time down memory lane - and the insight into "Roy's" thought, feelings, and experiences growing up. I definitely identified with it.
