From the bestselling author of the Kingdom of Lies series comes a slow-burn romantasy set in a Roman-inspired world ruled by merciless vampires. Filled with breathtaking combat, vengeful gods, and magical creatures, We Who Will Die is the epic first installment in an enthralling new series perfect for fans of Carissa Broadbent, Jasmine Mas, and Rebecca Yarros.

Life in the perilous Thorn district is a constant battle for Arvelle and her younger brothers. And the vampire standing on her doorstep is about to turn their world upside down.

Faced with an unthinkable choice, Arvelle makes a magically binding vow to do the impossible: kill the emperor, an ancient vampire created by the god Umbros. But first, she must enter the Sundering—an arena where only the fastest, strongest, and deadliest survive long enough to be selected for the emperor’s elite guard.

She quickly draws the ire of the Primus, the powerful figure charged with protecting the emperor. But the vampire under the armor is the last person Arvelle expects to encounter in the emperor’s court.

With her brothers’ lives in the balance, Arvelle has no choice but to ally with the man who once shattered her heart… and with the emperor’s sadistic son, Rorrik—two vampires whose motives are impossible to pin down. Rorrik holds the key to understanding the powers Arvelle is developing—abilities that would put a price on her head if discovered by the emperor.

To survive the arena and complete her mission, Arvelle must get to the bottom of a conspiracy that will change everything she thought she knew about herself—and the two vampires who are deeply entwined with her destiny…

Thank you to NetGalley & the publishers for a chance to review this ARC! So happy I got this one!!

This came extremely close to be a 5 stars read for me. Arvelle has raised her younger brothers (as someone who raised her younger brothers and still takes care of the youngest, this hit close to home) and is still taking care of them. They’re her entire universe and there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for them (felt this to my core).

This book took me on a wild ride. We have a mix of Roman inspired world with ruthless vampires, a cruel Emperor, magical creatures, gods, epic combats and an amazing magic system.

It’s truly a world I wouldn’t want to be in. It’s ruthless and it was sometimes difficult to read some of the passages! So please check the TW.

That being said, there’s a lot of plots and subplots and the pacing is uneven - I sometimes had to reread passages because I got confused as to what we were talking about exactly. With this many plots and things going on - this book would’ve benefitted having other POVs. I always felt like we didn’t get all the details since we were only following Arvelle’s POV.

I liked the romance at first. I liked that it was sort of a second chance romance but felt that the emotional connection was lacking. I sincerely didn’t like the love triangle with the brothers and didn’t appreciate it always being in the background. The whole « I saw her first » thing rubbed me the wrong way. Hope this gets cleared up in the next book!

Overall, I had a fun time with this. 2 plot twists really took me by surprise - one of them almost made me drop my kindle & the other made me sit up straight. I was at the edge of my seat for a good chunk of this. It’s a good Epic Fantasy! I can’t wait for the next book!!

I will come back on release date to post my various favourite quotes (a lot made me cry because they hit close to home).

Thanks to HarperCollins Publishing and NetGalley for an early review copy.

If this book doesn't go viral at the beginning of next year, I'm gonna crash out. 😅 I want the next book, so freaking badly.

This was right up my alley. Vampires, sigil marked individuals with powers, and, of course, the mundanes. Without being spoilery, there are government rebellions going on, gladiator style games, a murderer on the loose, Gods attempting to come back to life, a lost lover found. Possibly a new lover found? Because lets face it, she wants both of them. 😏 One man wants her without restraint; the other keeps telling himself he doesn't, but it's glaringly obvious to everyone except him.

There were also some really great plot twists. People that I thought were good turned out to be bad and vise versa!

Very minor out of context spoilers ahead!

Oh Stacia Stark you did your thing here. I am so reading more of your stuff now!
This book is adult fantasy excellence. I personally would categorize this as romantic fantasy and not romantasy (I think it’s more plot heavy for sure).
BUT ON THE TOPIC OF ROMANCE - put a gun to my head and I’d refuse to pick between the two guys. Please do not make me choose 😭😭😭 I need them both with Arvelle. PLEASEEEEE. I will be devastated if she actually has to choose only one of them 😩
Tiernon is just such a good person and his possessiveness is chef’s kiss and the way he has been there for arvelle her whole life….please don’t make them break up I will sob
And Rorrik?? Secretive and batshit crazy king!!!! Oh I knew I’d like him. His possessiveness?? Yes. His entire personality? Yes. ALSO THE THING AT THE END - I KNEW HE SAW HER FIRST. I GUESSED IT!!!!!! And yeah I need him to be with arvelle as well. Why choose please Stacia I am begging you 🥲🥲🥲🥲
But onto our main girl Arvelle…aka baddest bitch on the block. She is one of the most human feeling characters I’ve read in a while in fantasy. She feels so real. She makes mistakes and tries to learn and has trauma and is haunted by the past and her beloved dead and I just adored her courage and determination and dedication to her brothers. Her love for Kas had me tearing up. She’s such a strong person and I love her <3
THE WORLD. So so cool. Ancient Rome inspired but we have so many cool creatures and I’m so intrigued by how the world is like outside of the city we’re in for most of this book.
I loved all the gods and the religious systems, I was intrigued by the vampires and sigilmarked, the politics, and just all of it. And speaking of a certain god of ruin oh I have a theory about him…..
The plot is chef’s kiss. It keeps you on your toes and I truly could never guess where it was going because something was always going wrong for Arvelle. The end was perfect in my eyes and omg the idea of training scenes with Rorrik GIVE THEM TO ME!!!
I was just in love with this story and all of the side characters. Especially my girl Kas. The way her memory lived on in Arvelle was so touching and the flashbacks to Arvelle’s childhood were perfect. I usually don’t love flashbacks in fantasy but these ones came in at the perfect moments and I was genuinely devastated over some of them (I HOPE I GET TO MEET HIS BROTHER AND TELL HIM HOW MUCH HE LOVES HIM??? SEDATE ME NOW).
I have so many other thoughts but I just adored this world. The mystery sub plot is twisty, no one is truly as they seems, people sacrifice themselves for each other because at the core of this book; we have a story about a girl who cares so much and how that care for others and the world will ultimately save the empire. Arvelle 🥹
I am on the edge of my seat waiting for book 2. I need you all to pre order this beauty NOW and I need a why choose ending 🙏🏻

Thank you endlessly to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-arc!!! I love you guys!!

I really REALLY enjoyed this book. This is a book that immediately sucks you in and that keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time because you never know what is going to happen next.

I loved the magic aspect of the book; it was something so completely different from any other fantasy I have read. The Roman Empire inspired world that included vampires is something that really pulled me in from the beginning as well, it was just so dark. This is definitely a book you have to have all your attention on or you will miss crucial details. Everything didn’t click for me until about 40% through. There are also A LOT of characters that you are introduced to. I definitely recommend taking notes so you know who is who. This is definitely a book I will have to read again when the next one comes out so you not only remember everything that happened l, but I also feel like you will pick up so much more that you may have missed the first time.

I honestly cannot wait for the next book and to see how everything plays out with the little love triangle that was going on. You get hit with a few bombshells at the end of the book that I did not see coming at all. Also…I am secretly in love with Rorrik because, who doesn’t love the misunderstood villain?😏

*Thank you NetGalley, Avon and Harper Voyager, and the incredible author, Stacia Stark for the ARC!*

Huge thanks to Stacia Stark, the publisher (Avon and Harper Voyager), and NetGalley for the opportunity to read We Who Will Die as an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

As soon as I saw that this was a Roman Empire–inspired world with vampires, deadly politics, and a brutal arena, I was in. Stark delivers a richly imagined world full of magic, monsters, and morally gray choices—and I loved every minute of it (well, after the first third… more on that later).

Our FMC, Arvelle, is one of those rare characters you root for not because she’s overpowered or untouchable—but because she’s human. Deeply human. She's grieving the loss of her best friend, wrestling with abandonment from a childhood love, trapped in poverty, and forced into a deal with a vampire to protect her younger brothers, Evren and Garith. Her resilience and quiet strength as a big sister shine through and make her instantly relatable, even when the world around her turns violent and blood-soaked.

The magic system is also refreshingly unique, with a clear tier structure based on sigils—gold, silver, bronze—and a class of powerless mundanes at the bottom. The sociopolitical tension between the vampire council and the sigilmarked wardens creates a constant undercurrent of danger, making every choice feel consequential.

Now let’s talk romance... I hate love triangles. Despise them. And yet, here I am—fully invested in this one. I love Tiernon (he’s loyal, layered, and genuinely good), but there’s just something about Rorrik—the dangerous, seductive, and slightly sadistic vampire prince—that has me feral. I know Stark seems to be angling toward Tiernon, but I can't help rooting for Rorrik. (This is why I prefer “why choose” books—don’t make me suffer!)

My only complaint? The beginning is a slow burn. The first third of the book felt heavy on worldbuilding, and I struggled to stay engaged. But once the pacing picked up—chef’s kiss. I was hooked. Utterly and completely.

My only real regret? Reading this as an ARC and now having to wait forever for book two. Why do I do this to myself??

In the most private part of my soul, where I've tucked away the worst this world has offered me, something broken and scarred begins to heal.

OH MY GOSHHHH THAT WAS AMAZING I AM IN LOVE. ARVELLE MY BELOVED!!!! TIERNON AND RORRIK!!!! This book!!! Banging my head against a wall because book 2 will most likely be coming out in 2027?!?! Kill me now please.

Seriously, this was such an addicting and thrilling read!! I've had Stacia's other series on my tbr for a couple years now and after reading We Who Will Die (and be completely obsessed with it), that series is so being bumped up my tbr because um wow???? The world, plot, characters, romance, and basically everything else about this book was genuinely written so well in my opinion!! I have absolutely zero complaints. From the 28% point I basically binged the rest of the book because I really couldn't stop reading. I need to know what would happen and omg the plot twists??? I briefly suspected one person but then dismissed it BUT NO it was them!! The other plot twist I definitely didn't see coming at all though. I'm so so excited for book 2!!!

Arvelle was such an amazingly written FMC. I ADORE HER SO MUCH. New all time favourite FMC alert!! She felt so real, the grief, the pain, the joy... anything Arvelle felt, I felt with her. Literally wanted to give her the biggest hug and she's a character you KNOW you would love to be friends with. Which btw her friendship with Kassia???? Devastating and beautiful. Their bond was written so so so well. I GENUINELY CRIED AT THE LETTER SCENE??? Talk about soul-crushing but also heartwarming oh my gosh. How Kassia was always on her mind, the little things that would remind Arvelle of her I just-🥺 The author did such an amazing job writing Arvelle's grief and guilt. The shields she put up between herself and others was so understandable even as my heart broke for her. I loved seeing Arvelle slowly heal and I can't wait to see the development throughout the series. Also the way Arvelle just cares SO deeply, and it goes beyond just not wanting to kill in general. There was a passage that I loved so much of Arvelle's thought process and it's really just another reason to adore her🥹 I will fight anyone who hurts my girl, she deserves the world!!!

Oh and her relationship with her brothers??? SO WHOLESOME. I love Ger and Ev so so much and she literally would do absolutely anything for them, like yes we love seeing healthy, wholesome sibling relationships in fantasy novels!!! It's not often you see that LOL but I love it. I do have a bad feeling though one of them will die and if that happens I will be devastated so please, author, don't hurt them???

Okay and the romance!!! First of all, PLEASE LET IT BE A WHY CHOOSE I AM MANIFESTING SO HARD I LOVE THEM BOTH. Tiernon, her childhood best friend, and the sweetest guy ever??? His protectiveness and love for Arvelle is everything, and getting all those flashback chapters?? Oh I loved them SO much!! I genuinely will be so sad if anything happens that makes them break up like THEY'RE SOULMATES YOU CAN'T DO THAT TO THEM😓 And then Rirrok ugh I love him so much and I adore Tiernon but I will admit that I love Rirrok slightly more (but okay I have a thing for sadistic vampire princes I'm sorry). I was immediately intrigued in him from the moment he appeared and I actually didn't even realize he would be a potential love interest at first but when I did find out, I was SO on board. They have so much chemistry???? The tension??? I'm genuinely so in love with them, I can't wait for more Arvelle and Rorrik scenes next book but also please don't get rid of Tiernon🙏

The trials were so good, I was so tense during them and I know it's obvious that Arvelle would survive them but I was still so scared shdgksh I love the way she won them!! Seriously she's such a great character. The plot in the second half was so interesting and the things happening with the gods has me so invested I have so many questions!! Especially about Arvelle and her powers

I'm so happy I picked up this book but am only sad I'll have to wait 987238527562 days for book 2😩 Either way, I highly recommend We Who Will Die to anyone who wants a really thrilling fantasy romance!

Can you smell the salt-tinged air? Can you feel the heat of the sun? Are you living, Arvelle? Are you loving?

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon or Harper Voyager for an eARC in exchange for my honest review.

╰⪼And thank you to Stacia Stark for this deliciously good book that took me out of a 5 star reading slump!

I'm calling it right now, "We Who Will Die" will become 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝒃𝒊𝒈 𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒔𝒚 𝒐𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 🥀🖤

Okay but.. the scream that I screamt when I saw the approval email for this ARC!! I have been dying to read this as soon as I heard about it. I mean, Vampire Diaries meets Gladiator.. with a touch of Fourth Wing sprinkled in? Immediate yes for me.

We follow Arvelle who was champion of the Sands tournament six years ago. Although she may have won the tournament, she lost everything that day. Since then, she vowed to never step foot in an arena again. Until one day a vampire was waiting on her doorstep with a deal she could not refuse. In order to save her brother from a deathly illness, she agrees to return to the arena. The catch? She will need to win the tournament and kill the emperor. But Arvelle has been out of practice for years and is going to be facing opponents that have trained their lives for this. She's basically signed up for a death sentence.

We Who Will Die is captivating, enthralling, action-packed - it kept me on my toes the entire time! There was never a dull moment in this book. I had absolutely no idea where the plot was taking me and I love that in a book. Take me on a fantasy ride! To be honest around the 50% mark it looked like everything was wrapping up and I was a little confused. But HOLY CURVEBALL. It was just getting started!

We have not one, but TWO MMC's. Ummm Vampire Diaries love triangle situation? I was totally getting some Stefan and Damon vibes. And obviously my vote will always go to the dark, brooding, morally grey, Damon-esque type. 🤭 The romance was more of a side plot imo but it was definitely scrumptious nonetheless. Slow-burn, yearning, forbidden love, friends to lovers turned enemies to lovers type deal.

The worldbuilding was seamless and the magic system was distinctive. There are mundanes, vampires and sigilmarked. Sigilmarked individuals have different markings that correlate with their power. The more markings you have and the colour of your markings indicate how much strength you posess. The vampire species described in the book honestly reminds me exactly of TVD. We also see multiple different kinds of mythical creatures (maginari) as well. Scheming, political intrigue.. there are honestly so many different elements to the book that I believe will appeal to a wide variety of tastes and interests.

Overall, We Who Will Die was an exceptional read and one of my favourites of 2025! ࣪ ִֶָ☾. And it’s ME who will die waiting for the next book in the series 🥺 This was my first Stacia Stark book and it will not be the last.

Do yourself a favour and preorder this now! It releases in December this year and it’s one you won’t want to miss!!! 🖤

We Who Will Die - ARC Review

INCREDIBLE. This was SO GOOD!

I’ll admit I was skeptical at first. The beginning of the book was a bit of a slow start for me, but things began picking up around the 35% mark and halfway through I was HOOKED.

So much happens in this book; I honestly did not know where the story was going most of the time. In other books this may have resulted in a story that is too convoluted, but thankfully that was not the case here. Stacia Stark does an amazing job of building a rich world/magic system, and a dynamic plot, that is very well executed and flows seamlessly.

I’m not always a fan of love triangles, but this one was really well done and sets itself up perfectly for book two. Fans of The Vampire Diaries will absolutely eat this up. Rorrik is 100% for the Damon and Rhysand girlies, and he quickly cemented his place as a top-tier MMC for me.

I would recommend this book for any and all Romantasy lovers, and if the beginning feels slow, all I can say is trust the process with this one. You won’t regret it. There’s no way I won’t be picking up book two; good luck trying to pry it out of my greedy little hands once it releases.

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for the e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

This will be a huge Romantasy favorite in 2026. This really has it all: Vampires, Gods, Gladiators, mythical creatures, and magic!

This was fun & fast paced, with high stakes and plenty of action throughout the entire book. Arvelle is a fierce FMC that would do anything for her brothers. Both MMC’s are dark & broody, and it’s easy to root for both of them - I don’t usually like a love triangle trope, but this was well done.

After the ending, I’m excited for book 2 and what’s to come!

We Who Will Die is going to be a smash hit. It's a fantasy romance that checks so many bases: political intrigue and lofty schemes, vampires, gladiators, jaw dropping twists, trials, steamy romance... need I go on? Okay, I will.

This book is so fast-paced with a plot that keeps you guessing and up late at night because you don't want to put it down. I have some things I wish were different, but overall I adored it and I think this book could be the next big thing. It's also inspired and set against the backdrop of the Ancient Roman Empire - I LOVE fantasy books that model Ancient Rome. Gladiator is the obvious comparison here and I also got Bloodguard vibes, but much more well done in my opinion!

Our main character, Arvelle, is passionate and badass and her life revolves around caring for her brothers. All the choices she made were to ensure their safety, and I admired her selflessness even if she sometimes drove me up a wall with her stubbornness. She is magically bound in a vow to kill the emperor, a cruel and ancient vampire. We're introduced to the mysterious Primus - whose dynamic with Arvelle is fascinating right off the bat. And then there's Rorrik, the emperor's son, who initially appears to be just as brutal as his father. Along with those two, the trials and political machinations and the way that Arvelle must navigate them makes for a book readers won't be able to put down.

The main struggle I had was that the sheer amount of characters, creatures, magic, gods, and small plot details that are thrown at us was... a lot. There were so many different elements and smaller plots unfolding that I found myself having to go back to figure out what certain things meant; just trying to keep everything straight was a challenge at times. But I do think I was trying to pay too much attention to small details, so that could just be me!

I see the Vampire Diaries comparison especially with regard to the romance - think Damon v. Stefan type of situation. I'm never a huge fan of love triangle dynamics, even if it's just hinting at one I get stressed. So that was something I was a little caught up on especially because I don't get your hopes up a certain way, and I see that this is likely heading towards a choice for Arvelle. But honestly the book itself was too good to get too hung up on the love triangle aspect, and her dynamic with Rorrik was top notch. In general, there's slow burn, enemies to lovers / hatred to love, and sizzling tension that you could cut with a knife. Rorik was an especially phenomenal character and I can't wait to see more of him.

This is a complex book, but I admire the world Stacia Stark has created. The story she weaves is brutal, gritty, and captivating in the best way.

Thank you so much to Avon, Harper Voyager and NetGalley for this ARC!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | My Top Read of the Year. Thank you NetGalley and Avon & Harper Voyager for the ARC opportunity in exchange for my honest review.

This book just wrecked me, and I've been WANTING that in a book for a while now! We Who Will Die is one of those rare reads that punches you right in the heart and then makes you thank it. Stacia Stark has crafted something that’s brutal, beautiful, and so full of raw emotion that I found myself crying one moment and grinning the next. This story is going to stay with me for a while, and I'm angry that I can't read the next book right now.

The Characters:
Arvelle is everything. She’s flawed, fierce, and real in a way that hit deep. Arvelle doesn’t always make the “right” choices, and many of the moves she makes are shaped by her trauma, but she's still so likeable and believable. She’s one of the most human characters I’ve read in a long time.

Tiernon and Rorrick = Chaos and heartbreak
I don’t even know who I’m rooting for yet. Rorrick has that sharp, dangerous energy that pulls you in, and Tiernon is this quiet, steady storm you can’t ignore. They’re both layered, complex, and completely different, and their relationships with Arvelle are not simple. So far it’s messy, intense. and the side characters! All the relationships are scrumptious.

World-building:
Brutal. Rich. Alive.
Stark doesn’t hold back. This setting is harsh and unjust in ways that feel disturbingly real. Power, survival, the worth of a life, those themes are everywhere. I'm really impressed by how organic it all feels. Nothing is just there for flavor; it matters to the characters and the plot. There were moments so tense I had to put it down and take a breath.

Final thoughts:
This has real emotional weight, complicated characters, and gorgeous writing. You need to read this book, and I say that as someone who is actually pretty tired of the gladiator style tournaments/competitions that are so popular right now. It's just worth it.

“I miss you more than I missed the sun.”

YUP. THAT’LL DO IT. The next big romantasy book—100%. Gladiators & Vampires & Mythical Creatures & some serious plot twists…this book had it all.

FMC Arvelle has a TON of character growth through this book. There are times when she made me angry, sad, hopeful. This also had a ton of drama and I was living for it lol.

Certain side characters were a lot of fun and made the story that much more enjoyable. The villain…I don’t know…am I okay…because I loved himmmmmmmm.

It doesn’t end on crazy cliff hanger, but it will definitely leave you with unanswered questions and plenty of theories. DON’T SLEEP ON THIS ONE WHEN IT RELEASES.

Stacia did it again!!

I’m deeply sad that I read this book six months before release because now I have to wait extra long to read the next book. If you like the book Bloodguard, I absolutely think you will like this one.

I honestly can’t tell if this is going to turn out to be a love triangle or a why choose, and I’m really hoping it’s going to be a why choose because I personally wouldn’t be able to pick. They’re both broody, dark, powerful in their own ways, and delectable.

There is a lot going on at every moment in time, which caused me to have some mixed emotions about this one, but I was throughly entertained the entire time.

The trials gave me everything I was looking for, and the battles were absolutely everything.

We have a fierce heroine, tension tension tension, found family, trials, and dramaaaaa.

Thank you very much to Avon, Harper Voyager, NetGalley, and Stacia Stark for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Vampire Diaries meets Gladiator is the perfect comp for this absolutely devourable read. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of We Who Will Die at Apollycon (thank you, Avon & Stacia!!!), and I legitimately could not put it down.

Arvelle might be one of my favorite heroines in recent memory—a true tribute to eldest daughters everywhere. She’s fierce, emotionally complex, and unapologetically sharp. Watching her walls come down (emotionally and physically—her gladiator training arc is particularly well done) was incredibly satisfying. She’s giving Katniss, but with sharper teeth.

The first-person POV is a standout. It adds tension, emotional intimacy, and makes every twist land with impact. Plus, it keeps the MMCs delightfully mysterious as we try to decode their motives right alongside Arvelle. And the flashbacks to her childhood? Gorgeous and heartbreaking.

Plot-wise, the pacing is near-perfect. Arvelle’s three trials anchor most of the story, but we’re treated to layers of suspense, political intrigue, and a twisty mystery reminiscent of early Throne of Glass. Also, the banter? Absolutely top-tier. Sharp, funny, and perfectly timed.

Stacia’s worldbuilding blends vampire lore with Romanesque grit in a way that feels both fresh and familiar. Sigilmarked magic, cursed sunlight, political machinations, gladiator battles—it’s all here, and it works. I especially loved the inclusion of magical creatures (“maginari”) and am crossing my fingers for more in book two.

A few things I’d love to see expanded: earlier integration in the narrative of the gods/lore, a deeper look at the lower classes and how the society functions outside the elite, and clearer character visuals beyond the “shockingly handsome” archetypes (though the personalities here shine through).

Bottom line:
If you’re into fierce heroines, delicious tension, found family, high-stakes trials, vampires with a twist, and some of the best banter you’ve read in a while—We Who Will Die is for you. I’m already counting down the days to book two.

•3-3.5, May the odds be…oops wrong book, stars•

If this hadn’t been an arc, I would’ve bet my life I had read this before. Every twist, turn, and character interaction gave me an extreme sense of Deja vu. You wanna read a more ‘fantasy’ version of Hunger Games? Then this is for you. You like ACOTAR? You’ve got a large portion of it here. I was really excited to start this, but it just ended up being a little ‘been there done that’.

The pacing is wild, and by “wild” I mean off. Very stop-start-stop-start. It makes for a jarring reading experience. This might not bother most readers, but I’m a fan of escalating plots. I looked back at my review for A Court This Cruel & Lovely, and I had the exact same complaint. So I think it’s just a writing style I don’t really jam with.

The first act is very slow, but things do pickup once everyone is settled. I found our characters to be totally serviceable, but I got *major* ACOTAR vibes. Not going to spoil, but you’ll get it once you read this. The plot I found to be full of Hunger Games crumbs. When it comes to influences, We Who Will Die is not subtle. As far as cliff hangers go, this one’s on the more significant end. I would go in knowing that you’re getting blue-balled.

All this being said, I didn’t hate this. I was magnetically drawn in at certain points, and I would probably read book 2. There’s no doubt in my mind that this will be well received. This books future is full of 5 star reviews. If this was a little more distinct my rating would be higher. I just feel like I’ve read this before, and it was written better.

Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins for this arc!

I’m sorry but how can I go on and have to wait for book two in this series!!!!!!! This book hit all the right spots for me and I couldn’t get enough!!! Although I’m going to need a certain thing to happen in book two or all will be lost for me hehehehhe. Gosh seriously this book was a perfect example of a romantasy and I’m here for it! I loved the world Stacia built and can’t wait to explore further. I’m also super glad vampires are back in because my goodness this was one fun ride. Thanks to NetGalley and Avon and Harper voyager. This is a must read for sure and can’t wait for my friends to read this so I can discuss it!!!

Thank you NetGalley & Avon Books for the ARC :)

Theres nothing quite like a novel where the main character is forced into using skills they've abandoned to save what little family they have left.
Arvelle enters a deadly competition as close to against her will as she can get to become a guard of the empire... an empire she hates. Left with no other options but to trust a vampire with her brothers, Arvelle makes a deal and is sent in to kill the emperor.
Haunted by her past and lack of power, Arvelle stays a closed off, cold and friendless through the majority of this book. But lucky for her, people seem to like her despite her best efforts to remain distant.

You know I absolutely wanted her to drop the friendly brother for the evil one IMMEDIATELY, but that's just who I am as a person. We can have both...both is an option right? Guess I'll have to wait to find out.
Will 100% be waiting for the next book, need a little more morally grey in my life.

I’m absolutely obsessed.

I honestly don’t even know where to begin, because I’m still mentally and emotionally processing the rollercoaster that is this book. This book follows Arvelle, a woman blackmailed into competing in the deadly Sundering arena, with the ultimate goal of assassinating the emperor to save her younger brothers. Arvelle is such a well-crafted character—strong yet vulnerable, in a way that feels so incredibly real. Her emotions and reactions aren’t exaggerated or performative; they’re raw, flawed, and completely human.

And then there are the love interests. I’m torn between Tiernon and Rorrik. Both are tortured, morally gray, and completely impossible to resist. I honestly have no idea who I want Arvelle to end up with. What’s so refreshing about this love triangle is that I genuinely love both men for different reasons, which is rare in books like this. The relationships between Arvelle and both of them are messy, chaotic, and full of tension—in the best way possible.

The world-building is equally stunning. Stark has created a brutal, power-hungry world where survival is a constant struggle. It’s immersive, vivid, and feels so real that you’re transported into it with every page. Some scenes are so intense you’ll need to put the book down for a breather, while others are full of joy, leaving you with a smile on your face. This book is packed with plot twists, and I genuinely had no idea how it would end. And that cliffhanger? I need the next book now!

In short, this book is incredible. If you love vampires, morally gray characters, and Gladiator/Hunger Games vibes, this one is for you. The characters are complex, the world is rich and immersive, and the story kept me hooked from start to finish. I can’t wait for the next book!

I absolutely devoured this book in less than 24 hours! It's dark, magical, and utterly addictive.

Arevelle is the kind of FMC that I will never get tired of rooting for. She's fierce, clever, and driven by deep sibling loyalty. She gives strong Katniss and Feyre vibes in the best way. I love a story where the stakes feel real and personal - it always hits a bit too close to home for me, so parts were surprisingly emotional.

The worldbuilding is obsessively good. Vampires, ancient magic, mythological creatures, gods, crumbling royalty, forced games - seriously ALL the fantasy elements I love. They're woven together effortlessly, creating a rich world that draws you in fast and doesn't let go.

The magic system is unique, tiered, and deeply tied to power and control. This creates a caste-like system that feels both fascinating and terrifying. It adds another layer of tension to already high stakes. Sigil-marked peoples can be born with gold, silver, or bronze sigils, and even within those tiers, power levels vary. This plays heavily into politics, social status, and survival. The poor mundane (neither vampire nor sigil-marked) are at the bottom with the fewest rights and protections.

And the slow.burn.romance. It's so good! The danger. The secrets. Every interaction is laced with tension. If that's not enough, there's a hint of a future love triangle that throws everything into question. I'm dying for the sequel already!

If you enjoy fantasy with a slow burning romance, great worldbuilding, and rich, layered lore, I highly recommend this!

ARC Review: We Who Will Die
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

If you’re craving a book that delivers a fierce, high-stakes survival story with gladiator-style trials, broody vampires, slow-burn tension, and a splash of forbidden romance, We Who Will Die checks every box—then adds a few more you didn’t know you needed.

From the gritty desperation of the Thorn district to the lethal elegance of the emperor’s court, Stacia Stark crafts a world that’s as brutal as it is addictive. Arvelle is a heroine you can’t help but root for—fierce, clever, and willing to make impossible choices to protect her brothers. The magically binding vow to kill an ancient vampire emperor? Insane. The decision to enter a death match to get close enough? Even worse. But every page ratchets up the tension in the best way possible.

The slow-burn romance sizzles in the background, with just enough angst, history, and emotional depth to leave you aching for more. The Primus is all intensity and mystery, while Rorrik—the emperor’s sadistic son—manages to steal scenes with unpredictable energy and a hint of something more beneath the surface. The push-pull dynamic and unclear loyalties between all three characters will have romantasy lovers hooked.

With plot twists, emerging magical powers, and a growing conspiracy that could shatter everything Arvelle thought she knew, this book doesn’t just set the stage—it explodes it.

I have so many questions after that ending and can’t wait to see how everything unravels next. Highly recommend!!

4⭐️ 1-2🌶️

- Vampires
- Ancient Rome Inspired
- Unique magic system
- Enemies-to-lovers
- Forced proximity

I was really excited to dive into this one, after loving the series Kingdom of Lies, anything new from Stacia Stark is an automatic addition to my TBR!
We Who Will Die kicks off a new romantasy trilogy inspired by Ancient Rome, with a unique magical twist involving sigilmarked humans and vampires. The concept is bold and imaginative, and as always, Stacia Stark’s writing is incredibly engaging. Her world-building, especially early on, is rich, immersive, and full of vivid detail that pulled me in right away.

That said, I’ll admit the mix of vampires, Roman influences, mythical creatures, vengeful gods, and an entirely new magic system felt a little overwhelming. There was just a lot going on, and my brain struggled to keep up with it all at times!

The core plot does follow some familiar romantasy tropes, but it still hits all the right beats for an enjoyable read. I was entertained throughout, and I’m completely hooked on Rorrik, he’s hands down the standout character for me. I have to know what “he saw her first” really means! I’ll definitely be picking up the second book, if only to find out where his story goes.

Thank you NetGalley and Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House for the ARC.

Addicting, addicting, addicting. GAHHHHH this book is INCREDIBLE!!!! I read it in basically one sitting.

Vampire Diaries meets Hunger Games meets Gladiator.

I saw some of the twists coming from a mile away, and others were a complete shock. The world building, magic system, politics and incorporation of Greek Mythology WITH vampires is so so top tier.

The characters all have a lot of healing to do, and the found family elements paired with a murder mystery and sort of love triangle had me hooked.

I truly cannot wait for the next book!

Thank you to Stacia Stark, HarperCollins and Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Wow.

I absolutely loved this book! I love any story with deadly trials, high stakes and romance. This story had everything: vampires, sigilmarked powers, gladiator style sparring and fighting, with twists and turns throughout!

Arvelle has struggled to overcome the death of her best friend after fighting and winning the Sands, struggling to get by and support her younger brothers, one of which is ill and deteriorating rapidly. She’s driven to the point where she has to make a deal with a Vampire, a deal to kill the Emperor. A deal which takes her right back into the arena she’s been running from for the last 6 years. But the arena isn’t the only thing from her past coming back to her haunt her.

Thank you to NetGalley for the early ARC copy, I already can’t wait for the next book.

4.5****

I loved this!! This was addictive and immersive, had different plot points and twists.

This has an ancient Roman inspired world but with new Gods, vampires, sigil-marked humans (humans with power), mundanes (humans with no power), gladiatorial games, maginari (magical creatures), trials, empire, betrayals, lost and found family, and to top it off, a murder mystery!!

I found it very difficult to put this book down as I kept wanting to know what would happen next.

The writing was well paced and kept me engaged throughout the book.

As someone who enjoys ancient history and myth, I especially appreciated the nods to this throughout the book.

I can’t wait for book 2!!

I especially will buy this book (o hope there’s SE’s selling somewhere as I feel I need a physical copy).

Thank you for Net-Galley for the E-Arc.

vampire diaries meets gladiator is the perfect way to describe this book! it was different, it was fun, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. not going into enough depth with the world building and gods would be my only critique but overall I enjoyed this one. excited to see where the next books will lead us to!

thank you so much stacia and team for allowing me to be apart of your street team and thank you harpercollins and netgalley for sending me an e-arc!

This book was everything I needed and more. The complexity of the world Building, how I was able to connect with the characters, all made this book the perfect choice for me.

Vampires meet ancient Rome in a quest for survival and I couldn't be happier to have had the chance to read this book.

Roman inspired, vampires, deadly trials, and magic, yes please! This is a compelling new romantasy from one of my favorite authors, Stacia Stark.

Arvelle won the deadly trials known as the sands but lost her best friend during the trials. Left by her love Arvelle is now left working as a bodyguard to help care for her sick brother. When a vampire shows up on her doorstep offering her a choice, he will save her brother’s life if she enters the trials the Sundering and kills the emperor.

This is a high stakes fantasy romance filled with tension and trials all within a roman/ gladiator setting. The ruthless political setting is so compelling. I loved the vampire ruling class and the divide and tension with the sigil-marked who have magical powers.

Arvelle is such a compelling FMC, you understand her motivation and I love that she has made her way because of training and hard work. She’s also been hurt in the past and doesn’t want to depend on anyone.

I am not generally a fan of a love triangle but I am so invested in this one and very much rooting for Rorrik the darker more dangerous MMC although Tiernon has the past and is considered more of the good guy MMC.

I can’t wait to see what happens next!!

Read if you like:
- Slow burn
- Deadly trials
- Gladiators
- Vampires and magic
- Forced proximity
- Hidden identities
- Political intrigue

I loved this book! I love a head strong FMC (even if it backfires sometimes) and golden retriever, brooding and morally grey MMC(s)! I liked the games and trials aspect, but loved that plot continues past the games! Keeps you on your toes for what to expect next! Can’t wait to see how this story progresses!

Team Rorrik all the way!
