I thought I was normal, I really did, aside from the fact I had a penchant for naming the many facets of my personality. I was unlucky, I'll grant you, but other than that, just your average twenty-five year old virgin. Then my long dead ancestor turned up with a four-hundred year appetite, a passion for G-strings, and a scorching hot, male witch in tow. Throw in an unadulterated bitch of a familiar, three spirits baying for my blood, a six inch tall Geordie man, and my best friend Selina, and before you could say "bubble, bubble" I was strapped onto the front of the roller coaster of my life, heading straight to Hell in a hand basket. And the brakes were shot to pieces... _____________________________________ Lauren is a witch from the North East of England, where being normal is not the norm so no problem there! Her problem is the three evil spirits trying to end her life and in the process, a four hundred year old curse placed on them by her ancestor. Mayhem ensues with the arrival of the ghost of her ancestor (who is eating her out of house and home!) and then her familiar, a bitch from Hell who loves football and beer. The last straw is the sexy male witch her ancestor has dragged along for the ride who blows hot and cold and drives her insane!
Sharon Karaa is a mass of contradictions but two facets of her character have always battled for supremacy; her logical self (let's call him Frank) and her artistic side (lets her call Misty).
Until recently, Frank won every battle, forcing Sharon into a life based on most probable outcome and, to give him his credit, it has led to a fairly comfortable if rather boring life so far.
Then Misty took up kick boxing and gave Frank a good kick in the goodies.
Sharon lives with her husband in a little village north of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. She doesn't have a cat.
To be perfectly honest, it was not love at first page for this book and me. The first chapter is a bit clunky, with the main character speaking to the reader from an after-the-fact perspective. She also names the different aspects of her personality, and gives similar billing to the different aspects of luck. All in all, it didn’t immediately appeal to me.
Feeling indulgent, I stuck it out for a few more chapters. After all, this is a new author and beginnings can be tough… By the start of chapter 2 I was hooked. Hooked so strongly that after inhaling this first book I immediately bought and read the second book as well, and am eagerly awaiting publication of the third.
The storyline is quite different, the characters are a mix of relatable and endearing, and the whole book is just so much fun. Lauren seems socially awkward at the start, but she is strong and smart and you can’t help but like her. Her bestie Selina is too beautiful for words, and while she comes off as superficial at first that impression doesn’t last long, and you soon forgive her for being so damn beautiful. Loyalty runs deep, no one is perfect, and the unexpected pops up at every turn. Add in the super-delectable Daniel and the smattering of hot, hot sex, and this was a book I couldn’t put down.
Lauren’s otherwise Very Normal World is suddenly filled with witches, familiars, demons, and ghosts. She is skeptical and reluctant at first, but seeing (& feeling) is believing…Selina is a tougher sell but once she experiences the ghostly experiences she, too, finds it impossible not to accept the reality of the paranormal. Its the kind of story that I was sad to finish and return to my own world, as mine is still of the Very Normal variety.
There are a few typos but none too bothersome, and other than the clunky beginning, there is nothing I did not love about this book. A fantastic read!
Just in time for Halloween, we have a perfect dose of adventure, romance and a supernatural adventure to indulge on. So hide your candy and turn off the porch-light to detour the trick-or-treaters and grab this book and be prepared to laugh and swoon! Oh, where to begin? Not sure where to start on why I loved this book so much, but what I can easily divulge is that this was a non-stop, hilarious and adventurous read! Every character has their own lovable quirks and just about jump right off the page with such brilliant personalities. The author has a wonderful sense of humor and it shines throughout the plot. Lauren is our main character and she lives a happily, normal life until one day her hilarious, dirty-mouthed, four-hundred year old grandmother in the form of a spirit, Agnes, comes out of nowhere to be the bearer of horrifying news . . . Lauren is a witch and her help is very much needed as the families curse needs to be ended. I’ll let Agnes tell you all the trouble she’s in, worth the reading and laughs! Now that Lauren is learning to cope with her roots and the practice that goes along with it, her life has completely changed in the blink of an eye. She has; a tiny, cursing familiar; a swoon-worthy, long-legged guardian named Daniel; and a best friend who happily sticks with her through the thick of this interesting turn in her life. On top of all the laughs I had, there were many a times when Daniel had me wishing I were the one in the page getting his attention. Him and Lauren together once she got over the awkwardness of the situation, definitely was spicy! Days after reading this, it has still stuck with me and I am definitely telling all my friends about this! I hope to see more of these characters again one day, and especially more Agnes—that old spirit never gives a dull moment!!
Review of The Last Challenge: A Paranormal Romantic Comedy (Northern Witches Series), by Sharon Karaa
Let me start off by saying how much I truly enjoyed reading this book. It had everything I look for in a book; there was comedy, an intriguing plot, great sex, and very memorable characters! This book centers on Lauren, a 25-year old virgin who finds out she is a witch, and has her 16 times removed Grandmother, who is a ghost, watching over her. And she is the last in line of her family that has been cursed. All of this in the same night that she is attacked by an unseen force and subsequently rescued by a tall, dark, and handsome stranger. Let the mayhem ensue! I will admit I was a bit nervous in the beginning when the main character, Lauren, starts talking about her inner slut named Jolene. The first thing I thought of was, “Oh no! Not another one like Fifty Shades with the inner goddess crap!” Thankfully, I was relieved when I read, “I took a machine gun to Jolene.” Ok so no Lotus Pose here. As Lauren is learning her craft with her good friend Selina, she and Selina cast a spell to get themselves their “familiars”. Lauren’s is an incredibly gorgeous Redhead who delights in drinking beer and watching sports. Selina is not so lucky. I will warn you here that as I was reading the part in the book where Selina finds hers I was laughing so hard my husband looked at me like I was nuts. Dear God in Heaven that was single-handedly my favorite part! I was going to quote it here but I think you should just read the book. It is so worth it! The ending to this story is not necessarily a cliffhanger. It has a great ending but most definitely hints that there is more to come. I will definitely be buying the next book in this series. What a terrific start to a series!
I like a book that will make me laugh out loud. When the author contacted me and asked if her book sounded like something I would like to read, I jumped at her offer. What’s better than a book with a snarky/funny main character, sexy witch and a familiar that is 6 inches tall and cusses like a sailor?? Not much! This book will have you laughing out loud. I think at one part I even snorted/choked. But let me start at the beginning. Lauren was just a normal woman with a normal job, a great best friend and she liked it that way. Imagine her surprise when a 400 year old ghost pops in to tell her she’s the last in a long line of cursed witches and she must learn the craft or die. Doesn’t sound so funny, but the hijinks that ensue are most definitely worth of a snort or two. But she must start a coven and her best friend Selina joins and they call their familiars. As if that wasn't enough she starts falling for the gorgeous witch who has become her protector. Her situation really is serious though and the ghosts that cursed her family line are trying to kill her at almost every turn. I enjoyed this story. Lauren and Celina are great characters. Agnes, the ghost and reason for the family curse, is too funny and Daniel Hunter is like the sexy icing on the cake. Throw in a cat that isn’t, some exciting adventures in magic training and a trip to hell - literally, and this is one great story! I highly recommend it to anyone that likes paranormal, sexy male witches and a good laugh! Paranormal Tendencies gives The Last Challenge 5 stars! I can’t wait to dive into the next book in this series.
"The Last Challenge" by Sharon Karaa is a coming of age story. Lauren, the main protagonist, is pretty much alone in the world save for her best friend Selena and her Cat. A computer programmer by trade, she considers herself to be fairly average except in the luck and love departments. Emotionally and psychologically still a teenager, in a twenty-five year old's body, she has a few hang ups to work through. All she needs is a push, and that comes in the package of a hunk named Daniel and a grandmother to the sixteenth generation. Oh, and by the way, she also finds out that she is a natural witch. Hence, the great x 16 grandmother. It turns out that her family line is cursed and there are three spirits that would love to kill her.
This novel is for the person who loves to read about the development of interpersonal relationships between the protagonist and her new family/friends/love interest. Ms. Karaa has a way with details that makes you feel like you are sitting in the room with the characters watching the story unfold. But just to warn you, it takes place in Northern England, so there are instances where if you're American (like me), you might be unfamiliar with the vernacular. I enjoyed this story and look forward to the next one in the series.
Please note: I received a complementary copy of this novel in exchange for an honest and impartial review.
Who doesn't love a light hearted romance mixed with comedy, cross dressing witches, a 400 year old ghost, a hunky guardian and a giant rat familiar. Lauren doesn't know she's a witch, she thinks she's just a computer programer who Mr. Bad Luck follows around. She sure doesn't know she has evil souls out to kill her. She thinks she's losing her mind when she meets Agnes, a 400 year old ghost and Daniel a witch who can appear and disappear at will. This is a well written and fun read, fast paced and interesting. I will definitely be reading the next in the series.
First time I've picked up anything by this author and I've quickly grown to love her style of writing. Her story is intriguing, comedic, and completely grabs you and makes you want to finish it in one sitting. Word of caution, I actually woke my husband up because I was laughing so hard at some of the things that happened. If you're a fan of paranormal, romance, or comedy in general do yourself a favor and pick this up.
Something of a mixed bag. It feels like a first novel. I mean, it's like the author has thrown everything into this book up to and including the kitchen sink. It doesn't always work. There are moments where the author's talent cuts through, there are moments that are just out and out funny. But there really is too much going on in this book. I can't help but feel there is a 5 Star novel hiding in the pages but it needs a ruthless edit to bring it out.
This book kept me going constantly. There was a lot of humor constantly in the book, my favorite. Lauren and Jolene were my favorite characters. You will have to read the book to understand why. I recommend this to all my reader friends. I already have the next book waiting on me to 'read. Kudos to you, Sharon.
This book made me hold my breath during love scenes, laugh out loud, and almost cry (I tried real hard not too bc I was reading in public). I encourage any fan of paranormal romances to give it a try. Wonderfully!
A very funny and tongue in cheek story. The characters are fabulous. A really well written story I can't wait to start the second. It was great balance on wit, romance, heat, passion, emotion and an absolutely stand out plot. Fab!
It took me a while to get used to the narrator who chose to whisper the book (edit: no, that's a lie, I didn't get used to it and I still hated it by the end). Sooo that was awkward and it didn't help me care for what was being said. However, while the narrator wasn't my favorite, I don't think the writing was good either...It was all over the place and I never cared for any of the characters. Honestly, I kind of wanted to dnf it pretty soon after I hit "play" but I went through it and I'm wondering why. Oh yes because of a challenge and because I want to make the most use of my Audible subscription lol. Reading a few reviews and I feel like I wasn't the only one feeling meh about this book.

What a terrific start to a series!
Start off with an empty cauldron (every witch needs one). Now add Lauren Rutherford (she's the computer programmer that hasn't a clue that she is the last decedent of a powerful family of witches. Then add Agnes (she's the 400 year old Grandmother of Lauren and hasn't a clue about technological advancements over the last 400 years. Now add Daniel Hunter to the mix. You can tell that your recipe is coming along if Lauren's ears and other bodily parts start to smoke when she sees Daniel. Now add Abigail and Jolene to the mix. (Abigail is Lauren's 'inner spirit' who is determined to keep her on a morally virtuous path.) Jolene, on the other hand, is Lauren's 'inner spirit' that says "It's party time, we don't need no stinking morals".
Now add some familiars and a bunch of spirits that want to see Lauren dead. Stir this mixture of characters and sit until you fall off your chair laughing.
Sharon has written a great little novel that is hard to put down, very funny, and leaves you ready to pick up the next book in the series. I highly recommend this novel.
Unlike any other witchy or light paranormal novel I have read. This series has comedic, dangerous, mystery, and romantic elements. Being first of the series, the author has to introduce all of the main characters. Some are endearing, others frustrating, a couple intentionally unlikeable. Given my preference I am sure I would have chosen different forms for the familiars. One in particular seemed only to have one redeeming quality. A view of the otherworlds unlike other authors have written. Pay close attention to subtle clues that will be relevant as the series continues. There are a few graphic sexual situations so I would recommend mature adult readers. I wish the main romantic relationship could have been drawn out more, perhaps developing across several books. I know from the preview at the end that the next book will share more from the perspective of one of my favorite characters. I hope we also see growth in other people and relationships.
I was a little worried that I would not like this book once I started to read it. I bought the audio copy and it did take a moment to adjust to the ascent. I would have glazed over that if I was reading the book, but I ended up loving it. By the end of the book I was using the word knickers. I loved the the chemistry between Lauren and Daniel. I loved how he always drank out of her coffee cup. It was the little details like that that made the story more realistic to me. It was not just someone explaining an event, it brought me in and I became apart of their lives. I was sad when it was over, it is hard to explain, but the author created such a detailed story that I felt apart of it. I loved Selena's familiar, I had me busting up laughing. I wish we would have seen more of Agnes at the end. I wish all three books were about Lauren and Daniel and what happens next.
An hilarious paranormal romantic comedy! The characters are all crazy and make Lauren's life way more interesting, with witches, familiars, demons and the occasional normal person. The friendships and interactions of the characters are so well described that I felt I knew these people and some of them I would love to have as friends. A great story with so much going on that you'll be lucky if your head doesn't spin! It is intricately woven with a great ending, but has plenty left unsaid to pull you towards the next in the series. I loved this book for the smiles and laughter that it gave me, and Geordie is a spider never to be forgotten!
There was one sentence somewhere around the beginning of the sample that was weird, and I mean weird enough that I almost didn't purchase the book, but the story was funny and the characters were very likeable. I'm glad I paid to continue the story and will read more from this author. To be honest though after reading Natalia's story preview I thought there would be something going on with Selina and Natalie which would have been unexpected but interesting. I look forward to reading both ladies stories. Good job.
I received this book for an honest review. I absolutely love this book. The dialogue between the characters is the best. It's witty and fun and intriguing. You just can't stop when you start reading. Lauren, unknown to her, is a witch by family DNA and when acts of revenge begin, and things around her start to become unexplainable an ancestor shows up to explain it to her. Which takes things to a whole other level. It's got it all humor, great banter between friends, the funny dialogue of an ancestor, male hotness. A little of everything. Give it a read, you won't be able to stop.
A very enjoyable story with a dash of intrigue, suspense, mystery, and British humor ( the best kind). Sharon Karaa did a fantastic job of bringing her characters to life and made the implausible seem plausible. The only complaint I really had was the tidily quick ending. I listened to the narration (immersion)audible book. The narrator did an excellent job with the voices. I will definitely be reading more from Ms. Karaa.
A decent read. Most of the Elements I liked I have seen before, but I still enjoyed the story. I liked that there was sex but that it didn't dominate the story, although that is because she spent most of the beginning worrying about her virginity. But still I liked it, but then pnr is one of my preferred genres.
I picked this book up because it had two of my favorite things, humor & romance! Add paranormal and I've got the trifecta! Lots of great characters that you love and want to know better. Won't disappoint.
I enjoyed the British humor and rich characters in this story. The book keeps you interested all the way through one interesting twist to the next. I am looking forward to reading more from this series!
This book was thoroughly entertaining. The characters drew me in from the beginning & kept me laughing all the way till the end. It did take a little adjusting to the UK terms used but it didn't take long to pick up.
off beat and quirky, with interesting characters. For a virgin, she was experienced enough to satisfy her man. Not for everyone, but will tickle your funny bone.
