An Unforeseen Attachment: A Regency Love Story

Rate this book
Simon Wayford has one objective in mind when he travels to Bath–gain the affection of the woman he’s chased for months. When his efforts prove fruitless, Simon only agrees to stay at his grandmother’s request, anticipating an uneventful summer. What he does not expect is a young widow and her daughter to capture so much of his attention or his heart.

Julianna Bartlett never thought she would be living under her mother’s thumb once more. But after the passing of her husband, she and her daughter have little choice. While her mother is pushing for another marriage, Julianna is certain a loveless match will do nothing to repair what’s been broken.

Between a chance encounter and a meddlesome grandmother, two injured hearts might just find unexpected love.

I absolutely loved this story! Simon goes to Bath to pursue one lady but she doesn’t give him any attention. After a run in with a crazy duck, he meets Julianna and her daughter, Bridget. Julianna has been a widow for two years and has found it hard to be happy again. Simon makes it his duty to maker her smile. He also is so nice and sweet to Bridget. It’s adorable! I loved watching Julianna and Simon fall in love and then all of them become a family. I also loved Granny Bea, she is hilarious and I love her matchmaking ways. There are also characters that make an appearance from this author’s other books, which was fun. Overall this was a great book and I definitely recommend!

Absolutely loved it! The matchmaking grandmothers were an absolute delight! Simon's grandma had me in stitches with her clever wit. I was captivated by how the stories seamlessly intertwined, showcasing the magic of finding true love in the most unexpected ways. The charming backdrop of Bath, England, added an extra layer of romance to the tale. I admired Simon's unwavering determination to bring joy to both her and her daughter's faces. It was such a heartwarming love story! And let's not forget about Lord Duckworth—he might have had a hand in the magic too!

I received a complimentary e-copy of this book and read it with pleasure. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review.

This was such an enjoyable book! I instantly loved Julianna as a side character in An Unclaimed Heart, (previous book) so reading her story was not a let down!

I'm not always a fan of widow/widower MCs, but this was done perfectly and soo sweet. 🩷 Julianna's 6 year old daughter, Bridget, made the story even more perfect, especially with her relationship with Simon. He treated them both like princesses, with so much love, but not pushing them into anything. It was the sweetest slow burn that will completely melt your heart. 🩷

If you enjoy a clean, closed-door Regency romance, then I highly recommend!

Wow, this book is so sooo beautiful! It touched my heart so much, it had me smiling, laughing swooning and tearing up!!! It is the sweetest most tender story and I absolutely loved it! It stole my heart!

Julianna doesn’t know if she’ll ever find love or happiness after the loss of her husband 2 years ago. Simon doesn’t know how to move on from his current heartbreak.

One fateful day at the park changes everything!

I absolutely loved the characters in this story. They felt so real! Simon is a confident cinnamon roll sweetheart, and his winks got me every time!!! I loved his goal of trying to make Julianna smile. He brought so much joy back into her heart, and I loved seeing Julianna come back to life and finally smile!!! Little 6 year old Bridget stole the show. She is absolutely adorable!!!

This story deals with loss, grief, heartbreak, and the way the author portrayed the emotions of it all was done so beautifully! It touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes.

This story also has humor and so much heart. It was so enjoyable from beginning to end and I loooved reading it!

This book is why I read Regency romances. I love that slow burn, heart happy, happily ever after feeling!

Miranda wrote another beautiful book and this one is definitely a new favorite that I hope to read again and again!

I can’t finish this review without mentioning Lord Duckworth. He is a hoot and you are going to love him. The meet cute in this book had me laughing so much! What an all-around incredible Regency romance that’ll make your heart so very happy!

An UNFORESEEN ATTACHMENT
(Hearts of Somerset Book #3)
by: Miranda Nelson

•I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~Between a chance encounter and a meddlesome grandmother, two injured hearts might just find unexpected love...

“...there is something incomparable about being in love with a person. When you are in love, it reaches deeper, it defies explanation. To be in love with someone who is, in their own right, in love with you...there is nothing sweeter in the world, my dear.”

-An UNFORESEEN ATTACHMENT, is a lovely story weaved with such heart. It’s a dear story about picking up the pieces of hearts broken, to be mended, and then putting pieces back together in a different yet lovely way that brings light, love, healing, belonging, and love! Forged along the way are obstacles that will require some faith, trust, and bravery for dear characters within. While this story does have some harder topics of loss and grief, it is handled gracefully and also blended with dear humor. I didn’t want to put this story down. I was eager to know what would happen next. This is a heartwarming story that does lead to happiness after some twists and turns along the way. Yet, figuring out matters of the heart always does. Watching dear characters rise above obstacles and grow along the way had my heart. Seeing them hold onto what’s important was beautiful! Seeing them be able to be happy anywhere together, was simply the best. This is a dear story worth reading, my friends!🩷📚💯

“You deserve the world, and I hope you find it.”

•Content: strained family relationship, past death of a spouse, loss, grief, no language, kisses only.

“Here I thought I was bringing the sunshine
into your life, but as always you are bringing it into mine.”

An Unforeseen Attachment is the fourth book in the Hearts of Somerset series and focuses on Julianna and Simon’s story.

Julianna is a young widow who, along with her daughter, is forced to move back in with her mother after the loss of her husband. She is struggling to find joy in life as her mother attempts to marry her off again as soon as possible.

Simon is a young bachelor hoping to secure an engagement with a young lady he has been pursuing, only to find her engaged to another man. Fresh off of this hurt, he and Julianna meet and begin developing a friendship.

It was so nice to watch Julianna slowly begin opening up and trusting people as her friends after the loss of her husband. She learns that there are kind people who will care about her even when they are not her family. Watching Julianna come back alive and return to her hobbies that bring her joy through her friendship was Simon was so pure and sweet. It served as a great reminder that we can find joy again after grief and loss.

It was also nice to watch a flirty Simon work so hard to bring joy back to Julianna and her daughter’s lives. He is such a kind and caring gentleman, I wish more people were like him. He truly only wanted what was best for her and was willing to do whatever he needed to in order to help her find that joy again.

I loved the literary inclusions, especially my dear Pride and Prejudice nods!

This is definitely a love story you should read. It is full of hope and care and reminders that joy will come again after pain and loss.

Thank you to the author for including me on her ARC team! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Such a sweet story with the most lovely characters. Julianna is a widowed mother who is figuring out her new life now that she is back under her mother's thumb. Simon has intentions to finally woo a young lady he had been interested in for months but now can't help the pull he feels toward toward Julianna and her playful young daughter, Bridget.

The tone of the story is light and happy but still deals with heavier topics of loss and grief. Simon is such an amazing friend to Julianna, and I love his determination to bring joy to those around him and the bond he shares with Bridget. Granny Bea is the hilariously spunky matchmaking grandma you can't help but adore.

I flew through this adorably heartwarming story. I think you'll love it too!

Oh how I adore this story!! I was fully hooked and smiling, losing track of time. Filled with charming friendships, emotional hurts, gentle and patient love, and clever wit.

Simon and Julianna are just the sweetest. Both tender-hearted and kind. Dealing with broken and bruised hearts.

Simon is determined to leave Bath after his romantic hopes are dashed, but after a heroic yet comical encounter with a maniacal duck, a scared little girl, and a feisty woman,
new hope is born. A hope to make widowed Julianna Bartlett and her daughter Bridget smile.

Julianna struggles wondering if she’ll ever be able to open her heart and love again. Her inner turmoil broke my heart.

Bridget was adorably precocious. Simon and Bridget almost stole the show. Their interactions melted me.

Adding hilarity to this sweet story were Granny Bea, Charles Bingley, and Lord Duckworth.

Sweet story of second chances in love set in Regency.

This is my first foray into the author’s work but I find it quite enjoyable.

We return to Bath with its Lord Duckworth and lovely characters we’ve met before, but this time it is a chance to shine for Simon and Julianna.
Comfortable prose and lovely dialogues make it easy to dive into the story of kindness and love opening hearts to joy and happiness anew. Neither Julianna nor her daughter have much to be happy about as they grieve the passing of her husband, but it is genuine care and compassion of Simon that thaws their hearts and makes a HEA possible again.

The romance is sweet and the love story is gentle. Somewhat winsome, somewhat inspirational the novel is a delight to read. Although light, it still addresses issues like loss of the loved one, grief, difficult familial relationships, bringing joy back into one’s life, to name a few. The reader will not find a lot of action here but nonetheless will walk away enriched.

Besides, if you’re a fan of Jane Austen, your heart will leave these pages happy and full.

I had a privilege to read an advanced copy and absolutely loved it! All opinions expressed are my own.

A story of a surprising love
A truly enjoyable read of finding love not where you were looking. Simon went to Bath to court a young woman he cared for only to find her engaged to another. Distraught he decides to return to London only to have his grandmother convince him to stay in Bath. Julianna returned to her mother’s home as a widow with a young daughter. Now she is again under her mother’s thumb as is her little girl, Bridget. When Simon rescues Bridget from a renegade duck a friendship begins that neither expected. As their relationship grows they find their ideas of love challenged. A wonderful story. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

And the 5 stars continue. This one is again another set of tropes. A widowed mother and a heartbroken man. And the dastardly lord ducksworth. Again I will say I love the interconnectedness of all the books. No spoilers given.

I love these characters. Simon is swoon worthy with his humor, kindness and his need to see people happy. Julianna is dutiful almost to a fault in the beginning but as Simon works his charm of kindness and humor on her she slowly relaxes and finds happiness again.
I love Granny Bea, Bridget and the several other side characters.. This is a sweet romance with second chances and promising beginnings. I loved every minute of it.

“I suppose I shall be brave and allow happiness to find me in all its forms.”

Loved this delightful Regency! I can’t believe it’s my first book by Miranda D Nelson, Writer & now I can’t wait to read all her books. An Unforeseen Attachment is such a lovely, reluctant to fall, reverse grumpy/sunshine romance that completely hooked me. From Lord Duckworth to the mischievous Mr. Bingley, this story captured my heart. I was cheering on Julianna & Simon from the start!

After her husband’s death & losing her home to her brother-in-law, Julianna Bartlett & her adorable young daughter Bridget return home to her mother in Bath. Though she’s not looking forward to her mother’s criticisms & matchmaking, they have nowhere else to go. When Bridget’s rescued from the notorious Lord Duckworth by a handsome, charming gentleman, Julianna begins to reluctantly admire him. His delightful personality & wit brings unexpected joy & happiness into hers & her daughter’s lives, but is she ready to move on from the past?

Simon Wayford came to Bath not only to visit his grandmother, but to follow a young lady he’d fallen in love with. Unfortunately, he’s too late, & she’s already attached to someone else. Ready to return home & lick his wounds, his grandmother persuades him to stay, especially after she sees his endearing interactions with Julianna & Bridget. Simon agrees & soon finds himself enamored with Julianna, but can he persuade her to give love a second chance?

I adored Simon! He’s such a delightful character who thrives on lifting others & making Julianna smile. He’s creative, thoughtful, & loves fully. But, he’s also scared of risking his heart. I loved seeing him take a chance with Julianna.

Julianna’s serious, cautious, & reluctant to let go & have fun. Simon is a ray of sunshine in her life & brings out her talents. I loved the storybook she, Bridget, & Simon create together.

Simon’s grandmother is a delight! Granny Bea’s full of mischief & I loved her & the Gossiping Grandmamas. I also enjoyed the Tales & Tomes Society, & Simon’s reading. Also enjoyed his family including best friend Gilbert, & Lady Olivia.

Highly recommend to Regency romance fans! Though part of a series, each book is easily read as a standalone. I received an advance copy from the author, but also purchase a copy through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are completely my own & voluntarily provided.

“But I cannot think your family is broken. Your daughter is well loved by you, and I’ve seen the joy she brings to your life. And she loves you as well. If that is not a family of love, then I do not know what is.”

This book had me hooked from Simon and Julianna’s meet cute. 🦆 It has a little heartbreak, a lot of healing, an amazing friendship, “Gossiping Grandmamas”, outdoor adventures, and lots of family.

Julianna is trying to find her way after being widowed. She is gentle and caring. Her devotion to her daughter was amazing. Little Bridget stole my heart. Simon! What to say? He was delightful, caring, and a wonderful friend. I adored the bond between Bridget and Simon and how that affected Julianna’s friendship with Simon. I really loved Granny Bea, she was exactly what Simon needed. I enjoyed Simon and Julianna’s interactions with his family too. I absolutely loved how Simon was always looking for ways to make Julianna smile and to bring her joy!

A few more quotes:
“I think I have been waiting to see that smile for a long time. It was certainly worth the wait.”

“You see me nearly every day, one would think that you have spent so much time with me as to render me tiresome.” “I do not think such an amount of time exists.”

“If you are going to flirt with me, you should at least give me an opportunity to reciprocate.” “I am too old to be flirting.” “One is never too old to flirt. In fact, I plan to flirt with my wife until we are old and grey.”

Note: This is book 4 in the series. It absolutely can be read as a stand alone. There are hints to other books in the series.

This ARC was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.

There is a matchmaking grandmother and her friends in Bath who are dubbed the “Gossiping Grandmas”. Simon Wayford’s grandmother seems to be the leader of the group and, he is not safe from the ploys they will enact to see him married. I loved Simon’s grandmother! She was one of my favorite characters besides him and widow, Julianna Bartlett. Lord Duckworth is cleverly brought into the story and it’s pretty funny how that dastardly duck is protected, even by the law!

I loved the literary society where books such as Pride and Prejudice were discussed and varying views were offered. It was funny that it was all women with the exception of Simon and his friend that he invited so he wasn’t so outnumbered. More matchmaking plots were being hatched…

Simon was a huge supporter of Julianna and her dreams. I thought he was such a dear man when he encouraged her and included Bridget, her daughter in so many things. He exemplified the saying, “Love is patient, love is kind.” by deciding he would wait for Julianna to be ready to take the next step and not rush her in their relationship.

Things to love:
he falls first
protective MMC
Bridget
writing and illustrating stories
stick races
reading aloud

This is part of the Hearts of Somerset series, but can be read as a standalone. If you enjoy Regency period romances with a friends to more trope, you’ll want to add this to your list of reads. This is the first book that I have read by this author, and I look forward to reading more of her books.

I received this complimentary copy of the book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Love comes in many disguises as Simon Wayford and Julianna Bartlett discover—and so do matchmakers.
Simon goes to Bath to visit his grandmother, Granny Bea, but actually to court Agnes Fairfield, whom his sister has candidly told him isn’t interested in him.
Julianna, a widow with a daughter, returns to Bath to live with her domineering
mother and lackadaisical brother rather than marry the heir to her deceased husband’s estate.
As Simon’s sister had predicted, Agnes Fairfield has no interest in him and in fact, has accepted the marriage proposal of Colm Stole. His reason for being Bath gone, Simon prepares to leave Bath; but Granny Bea feigns an injury to her knee and needs his assistance, particularly in walking her wayward dog, Charles Bingley.
A menacing duck and the mischievous dog bring Simon, Julianna and Bridget together. Initially, Simon simply wants to see Julianna smile, but as they spend time together, he realizes that he wants her in his life. But is this love? He’s not sure and he doesn’t want to be rejected again.
Julianna doesn’t want to marry again—despite her mother’s pushing all the unmarried men of wealth and rank in Bath at her. Julianna enjoys Simon’s company. He is good to Bridget, who clearly adores him. But is this love? What she feels for Simon is not the feeling she had for her deceased husband.
Simon and Julianna are well-drawn characters and their development as individuals and in a relationship with each other is realistic.
This is a delightful Regency romance.
I received an advance readers copy of this book from the author. This is my honest opinion.

This is the first book that I’ve read in this multi-author series, and I found it poignant and heartwarming. Simon Wayford came to Bath to pursue a woman’s hand, only to find her engaged. Julianna is a widow who came to love her husband dearly and is unable to see a path forward to make her family whole again. These two lonely hearts unexpectedly connect through the shenanigans of a crazy duck, a clever grandmother, and a lovable furry friend!

Simon’s pleasant demeanor, his thoughtful care and connection with Julianna’s daughter, Bridget, and his desire to bring happiness to Julianna’s life endeared him to me. Julianna is at first reserved and protective. Their “meet-cute” was so very memorable and a great way to bring the characters into each other’s orbit. I appreciated the character growth and the slow development of friendship into something more. The struggle Julianna faced in understanding her changing feelings for Simon and how to leave the past and move toward her future was heartfelt. I appreciated how Simon helped her rediscover her love for stories and art.

Read this story for:

❤️Sweet Regency romance

❤️Third-person dual POV

❤️A fun, gossipy matchmaking grandmother

❤️A terrorizing duck

❤️Widow finds second chance at love

❤️A furry friend was used as an excuse to meet up

❤️MMC who is great with children

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was so sweet! It is my first from Ms. Nelson and I am excited to read more.
I felt so much for Julianna! She had been through tragedy and was a bit unmoored. However, she was determined to care for her daughter and to remember her late husband well. I loved her relationship with Bridget. Julianna was such a good mother to her and it felt like both an important part of her, but not all of her. Throughout the story, she found support and encouragement to rediscover what gave her joy and her hopes for the future.
Simon was so sweet! I loved his lightness and playfulness. It was also so sweet to see him with his grandmother. I loved her! She was hilarious and so vibrant. I loved her and her friends together too. I loved how he connected with Bridget and the way he cared for her. He and Julianna were so cute together. They really enjoyed one another’s company and had a lot of commonalities.
I loved being back in Bath! It was so fun to see some other characters from the series and especially Lord Duckworth! He is pretty hilarious and had so much fun reading about him again. This was a sweet historical romance with only kisses.
I received an ARC.

I was surprised at how much this book connected with the last book I read in this series. Usually there are light references to the other books, but this had more than usual in a multi-author series than I’m used it. However, it can still be read as a stand-alone without any problems, but it was fun to see the friend of the heroine in the last book having her own story taking place at the same time in this one. It must have taken a lot of interaction between the authors. Julianna and Simon made a delightful couple, and little Bridget was adorable. Simon was so thoughtful and sweet in trying to bring joy to their lives. I love how they both found healing through each other! I found Simon’s matchmaking grandmother charming as well, and the crazy duck and misbehaving puppy play their role in uniting the couple together in humorous ways. An entertaining read! Thanks to the author, I received a complimentary ARC, with no obligation to post a positive review.

I loved this book, a clean, wholesome, charming, regency romance. The storyline is intriguing. Simon is quite smitten with a young woman, and his decided to follow her to Bath to ask for her hand.
Julianna and her daughter had come to Bath after the passing of her husband. Her mother is determined to find her a peer to marry.
The storyline is so entertaining. I love the Jane Austin references, the matchmaking grandmama’s and I can’t forget Lord Duckworth. The characters are so genuine, you feel a kinship with them immediately. There is just enough drama to make it. Intriguing and delightful banter to keep it entertaining. It is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone with, “And we’ll live happily ever after?” “Every single day,” Some characters do overlap and I highly recommend reading the other stories in the series.

Very sweet. Julianna had to open up a lot because she was a widow with a young daughter and Simon had to break down walls because he was hurt recently by someone he cared for. Simon rescuing Julianna’s daughter, Bridget, from a crazy duck was a hilarious meet cute. The way the met up at the park each day to hang out, talk and bond over books was cute. These two really got to know each other slowly and organically. It was genuinely strangers to friends to lovers. Simon was such a kind, warm hearted man and he was just what Julianna needed to feel safe loving again. Bridget was adorable and the way she brought out Simon’s playfulness was so cute and the bond they shared was so special. The three of them just ended up being the sweetest little family.

I can always do without a meddling grandmother, but she wasn’t too obnoxious/intrusive so it wasn’t a huge deal.

I really enjoyed reading the newest offering from Miranda Nelson.
An Unforeseen Attachment had some fun moments, like an attack mallard named Lord Duckworth, which led to a most unconventional meeting between Simon Wayford and Julianna Bartlett. Let's just say a book and Simon get damaged in the encounter.

With a dog named Charles Bingley, a matchmaking Granny, and a mother with an iron thumb, you know something will happen when Simon and Julianna get a chance to know one another. This was a cute Regency read with clean romance (AAA+ in my book).

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book, with no expectations, but to provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Oh, how I loved this book!!! I have been reading another book for a few days and put it down to “just read the first chapter and see what I think” of An Unforeseen Attachment and didn’t put it down until I finished at 4am. I love how Miranda’s books feel like they could actually happen; a single mother really can find love again, an annoying little dog can drag you into the best situations, and ducks really can be hilariously scary. I love Julianna’s strength, devotion, and determination. And Simon *sigh* who wouldn’t fall in love with him!? He’s thoughtful, tender, supportive, and loves children. He also isn’t pushy, demeaning or demanding. I look forward to rereading An Unforeseen Attachment in a few months so I can fall in love with this story all over again.

SIMON!!! Can I have him? Just kidding. Him and Julianna are so meant for what another, and man is she one lucky woman. I loved these two, and I really enjoyed their growth throughout the book. Julianna believes she won't marry again, still grieving the loss of her husband. I adored how her love for Simon grew, a large part of it stemming from his interactions with her young daughter. Simon is seriously just the sweetest and so charming. Both of these characters have their eyes opened to love--real, genuine love--and it was such a beautiful journey to take with them. Absolutely loved it

I really enjoyed this journey into Bath. This is my first book to read in this series and I will definitely go read the others by different authors. I appreciate how Simon embodies the often clueless manner that men display when interacting with women. The way love sneaks up on these two kept me turning pages eagerly. I was so happy for the resolution at the end, but I still wanted to murder that duck!!!

A Sweet Regency Romance
Although both the main characters are rather cautious, they eventually find happiness together. The recurring appearances of a duck named Lord Duckworth provide another theme for this story, which is set in Bath. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved this book. It is a sweet second chance romance. Simon is recovering from a disappointment in love and Juliana is a grieving mother. A chance encounter in the park and a mean vindictive duck bring this couple and daughter together. This story has many layers with a match making grandmother and an over zealous pushy mother. I didn’t want to put it down.

Not just a love story but a story about love. There are many kinds of love and this story is filled with many of the loveliest kinds. Both Julianna and Simon must gain some understanding of the love they are feeling now versus the love they felt for someone before. A sweet story! I enjoyed the warmth of family and who does not find a man attractive who loves and respects children?

I really liked this story. It was a slow, gentle build with characters with understandable reservations. The hero is not a Mr Darby, but maybe closer to a Mr Bingley…a refreshing change. I worried that I might not like the heroine, but she grew beyond her reservations and blossomed. The side characters were engaging.
