An Unrivaled Match: A Regency Love Story

Rate this book
Ending a family feud and obtaining a fine horse aren't the only prizes for unraveling the mystery behind a missing heirloom.

Miss Seraphina Taylor would love to prove her worth to those around her, but she simply cannot turn down a challenge—which lands her in trouble…again. In her attempts to turn her luck around, she falls upon an opportunity to win herself a horse. So, she strikes a bargain with her family’s gentleman next door.

Mr. James Anderton has a secret—which his meddling neighbor discovers and uses as blackmail. He must decide how much he is willing to risk to protect his reputation and his family. A horse? Easily done. His heart? That quickly becomes more complicated.

But how do two people who are forbidden to acknowledge one another avoid being discovered working together? By breaking some of the strictest rules they’ve ever been taught and solving a mystery as old as their grandparents. Failure would result in more than one broken heart.

Absolutely fantastic! I devoured this one in two days and loved every minute of this regency enemies-to-lovers story with a hint of mystery.

First off, this is how I like enemies-to-lovers to be written: with the main characters as actual enemies! Serafina and James are next neighbors locked in a Romeo and Juliet-esq family feud spanning three generations. After all, Andersons and Taylor’s just don’t mix. But Serafina is hardly one to be restrained by a rule, and James isn’t a stranger to defying societal expectations either. Sera’s disastrous first season and James’ secret hobby as a doctor are both testaments to that. So it isn’t surprising when Sera effectively blackmails James into an agreement that forces the two of them to work together frequently. Perhaps it is the thrill of rebellion and the entertainment of banter that initially pushes Sera to interact with James, but as time passes, their connection only grows. Yet both their personal and family pasts are complicated obstacles to forever. Will the two of them be able to find healing, in the past and present, and make an unrivaled match?

Sera was the fiery, defiant, vulnerable, devoted, regency woman that I wanted her to be. I enjoyed the banter between her and James, and I appreciated her sweet relationship with her brother as well. James is the perfect gentleman to complement Sera’s fire. He grows a lot during the course of the book, as he learns to face his fears and focus on what matters most.

The light mystery and suspense was also super fun! It reminded me of Joanna Barker’s A Heart Worth Stealing, another fantastic regency romance with light supense/mystery. I also loved learning about what doctors did during the 1800s- so fascinating!

Okay, Brooke, please write another book soon soon soon!

Content: No language or violence, kissing only

Genre/Tropes: Historical Romance (Regency), Forbidden love/enemies to friends to lovers, neighbors

My thoughts: This was such a fun read! It's one of the Hearts of Somerset series, which can be read as a standalone, or in conjunction with the other 5 books. I loved Sera and James, their interactions with each other and sneaking around to not be found out by either of their families. Their challenge/mystery of trying to find the missing ring that had caused the initial rift between their families 4o years prior, and how they came to care for one another. I also super loved Sera's younger brother Tom, and James's niece, Bridget. Lots of sweet family moments, as well as moments of standing up for oneself in front of family members.

Some favorite moments:
The almost kiss
The first kiss
Catching Lord Duckworth
Notes in the stone wall
The ball
Sera riding on Freedom

This book was amazing! I really loved it! It was my first book by this author. I was hooked completely from the beginning and finished in one day! There has been a feud between the two main characters families for decades. Sera and James continue in it. Sera has a leg that gives her great pain. She broke it when she was younger and it wasn’t set right. James feels bad for the incident that made that happened and is working to become a doctor so that doesn’t happen to anyone else. Sera and James live right next to each other when in Bath. When Sera and James meet again, the feud is still on. They are enemies, until they decide to work together to resolve the feud by finding the signet ring that went missing.
I just loved everything about this book! James and Sera are fantastic characters. Their chemistry is so swoony and romantic. They are so different from each other and I love it. I also really loved Sera’s brother Tom and how sweet he was towards his sister. I also liked seeing characters from the other books in the series. Overall, a fantastic read and I definitely recommend!

This was such a fun, banter filled, family feud, true enemies to lovers story that I could not get enough of!! The tension between Seraphina Taylor and James Anderton was so tangible and I was giggling and smiling so much! This book will take you on a whirlwind story of a strong and fun FMC with a stoic and devoted MMC that shows how working together and looking past faults of the past can create a beautiful future!

“I absolutely do not accept the full blame of this situation.”

The feud between the Anderton’s and the Taylor’s is well known in Bath. Their families avoid walking past each other’s doors, which happens to be right next door. Sera is a rebel, a rule breaker, and always up for a good lark. James is serious, reserved, and understands the ruin his family could face if the rules of society are not followed. After a literal run-in with her archnemesis, Sera discovers that James Anderton has grown up to be quite a handsome man….it’s too bad such good looks would be bestowed on a man she is obligated to avoid at all cost.

Oh how I enjoyed seeing the other characters in this series show up in this book! The authors have done a fabulous job matching all the details and makes the interconnecting stories seamless!

What a great Forbidden Love, Clean Regency Romance. I really enjoyed the tension between Sera and James but at the same time they were also sweet to each other. It’s a slow burn with light and heavy moments and a touch of mystery. The FMC has a disability from a leg injury which puts an extra spin on him taking care of her. And that almost kiss and the first kiss…. 🔥🔥. Sera’s younger brother Tom is probably the sweetest brother ever how he cares for his sister. I also want to add that the cover of this book is gorgeous… especially the whole series lined up together to create an ombré effect. Love it! 👏🏼👏🏼

I found it interesting that a doctor position in this time period was not thought of as a prestigious occupation as we see it now. It's so fun the things you learn from books. This is my second book by Brooke, so I wasn’t surprised to find that this story was very well written and I couldn’t put it down. Definitely recommend.

FMC: Serafina (Sera)
MMC: James - (Sera’s neighbor)

What you’ll find:
🔸 Dual 3rd person POV
🔸 Enemies to lovers
🔸 Family feud
🔸 Forbidden love
🔸 Close Proximity
🔸 Disability rep (FMC chronic leg pain)
🔸 A dash of mystery
🔸 The almost kiss 💕
🔸 The first kiss 🫠
🔸 Letters in the wall
🔸 Mystery (Treasure Hunt)
🔸 Horses

An Unrivaled Match is a forbidden love, rivals to lovers story set in the regency era. It is book 5 in the Hearts of Somerset series and follows James Anderton and Serafina Taylor’s story.

The Anderton and Taylor families have been feuding for 40 years, ever since the Taylor’s signet ring went missing and his best friend, the late Mr. Anderton, was accused of stealing it.

Years later, James and Sera strike up a deal. If Sera can find and prove that the ring was stolen by James’s grandfather, then he has to gift her one of his prime racehorses.

James is a strong and character gentleman who is hiding his interest in doctoring from his family. As a gentlemen, having a job is considered below his station. But even since his neighbor Sera broke her leg in a childhood competition between the two, James has felt it his duty to help people heal.

Sera is a strong, stubborn, and hurting young woman who puts up a strong front in order to hide the pain and insecurity she feels regarding her injured leg. When an opportunity arises to blackmail her neighbor James into agreeing to the competition regarding her family’s lost signet ring, she jumps at the opportunity to finally win her freedom, through the racehorse he has promised as her prize.

As these two work together to solve the mystery they begin to learn that maybe their families were wrong and that a friendship between them would be worth risking their families ire.

Sera and James quickly grew on me throughout this story and I was eager to see how to situation would be resolved.

Definitely read this book if you enjoy regency love stories, and make sure to check out the rest of the series (it’s absolutely delightful and will lead you to many other connected books that are just as good)!

Thank you to Brooke for including me on her ARC team! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

AN UNRIVALED MATCH
(Hearts of Somerset; Book #5)
by: Brooke Hampton

••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~Ending a family feud and obtaining a fine horse aren’t the only prizes for unraveling the mystery behind a missing heirloom…

“He couldn’t ignore her forever-she’d make certain of that.”

-AN UNRIVALED MATCH, is the fifth dear story in the lovely Hearts of Somerset Series. This is an adorable and witty story with such heart! It has fantastic rivals/enemies to more, endearing characters, complicated family dynamics, mystery, humor, and of course, an appearance from Lord Duckworth, who is all about causing chaos. The sparks of attraction and swoony moments weaved delightfully within had my full attention. I thoroughly enjoyed the antics, and delightful banter between the two dear main characters. They each in their own way are great but, together, they are unstoppable and a force for the better, making a great difference to each other and to their families. I loved watching them both “unmask” decades of hurt, fears, risks, and demands/rules from their own families to find true freedom and happiness.
True success comes from taking risks to healing and mending hearts for the better! Watching dear characters trust more and realize that, they are worthy of love despite struggles had my heart. Friends, this is a dear story worth reading! I loved it!📚🩷💯

“You are beautiful beyond measure, stronger than anyone I know, and you have made me happier than I have ever been. Even with all the shenanigans, perhaps even because of them, I have been happier than I could ever recall.”

•Content: complicated family dynamics, leg injury, guilt, grief, missing heirloom, lies, no language, kisses only.

“I don’t want you to be different. You are perfect just as you are.”

This was such a delightful book! This was my first book by @authorbrookehampton, and I'm very hooked now and will be reading up all her books! 😅

Sera was such a relatable FMC, it almost hurt. 💔 Everything she battled with I understood completely, and felt for her as if she was right next to me. Her spunk and strength was soo inspiring, and was truly just what I needed.

And James is one of those MMC that was just...perfect. 😌 Whether it was becoming a doctor, or Sera, he never gave up on any of it, even when society and family thought less of him. He couldn't have been more perfect for Sera. 🩷

If you enjoy clean, closed-door Regency romance, then you should definitely try this one!! 🩷

This was such a great book! I loved the stubborn competitiveness of Sera and the way James matched her step for step. Their banter was so good! Their relationship brought healing for them but also healing of a decades old family feud. Add in a mischievous younger brother, a trouble making duck, and some gossiping grandmamas… what’s not to love!

This series truly stands out as my favorite time period. The intricate connections between the books create a captivating reading experience. The immersive world-building pulls you in, allowing you to discover intriguing insights into various characters from unique perspectives. The female main character is particularly admirable; she embodies strength and independence, with a touch of impulsiveness, while maintaining a respectful and ladylike demeanor. The male protagonist is equally compelling, showcasing qualities of strength, honor, hard work, and deep love. Their adventures together are genuinely entertaining and filled with humor. I also appreciate the clean content, which makes it a delightful read for everyone. Everything about this series has been a joy! Moreover, the stunning covers only add to my excitement. I can't wait to have every single book on my shelf!

An Unrivaled Match is a delightful Regency love story with feuding families, forbidden activities (as well as a forbidden romance), and an age-old family mystery to solve, lending it a Romeo and Juliet vibe.

Serafina is obsessed with horses and riding, and also deals with a childhood injury that plagues her. Headstrong, she is determined to do what she wants, no matter the cost. When a forbidden riding race ends in disaster, she’s rescued by James, a man whose family is feuding with hers and whom she is forbidden to have contact with. I can’t resist a story where these types of traditions are broken.

James has secrets of his own–he’s learning to become a doctor–and his solemn and cantankerous persona are so opposite of Sera’s, yet these two balance and interact with one another in such a pleasing way–ways full of wit, banter, and chemistry.

With an entire cast full of enjoyable characters, secret notes in the wall, blossoming romance, and sleuthing out the mystery of a signet ring, this is an amusing frolic through the pages.

Content: mild romance

“One did not acknowledge a Taylor, after all. Usually, James was quite proficient at ignoring the lot of them, but when was it that Miss Serafina had decided to grow up?”

This regency romance was an unexpected delight and just what I needed to dive back into the genre!

I have struggled recently with historical reads and this read fixed that problem!

It was a fantastic blend of wit, banter, depth, and character development. With a first son secretly following his dream to be a doctor, to the rival family’s daughter having horse races in Hyde Park, this story keeps you on your toes.

I love how the main characters are able to navigate their own family and feelings. I also adore the role the brother and niece play! IYKYK

Loved, loved, loved this book! An Unrivaled match is the fifth book in the fabulous Hearts of Somerset series & a heartfelt, witty, Romeo & Juliet themed Regency romance. Brooke Hampton’s created a delightful rivals/enemies to more romance with endearing characters, complicated family dynamics, & of course Lord Duckworth, the troublesome mallard who loves wreaking havoc on Bath.

Serafina Taylor’s strong, independent, & never backs down from a challenge despite a childhood injury that gives her pain. She loves horses & never feels more free than when she’s riding. After a disastrous forbidden race in London, she’s sent home to Bath. When she’s rescued by her handsome but off limits neighbor, she strikes a bargain with him involving winning one of his prized horses if they can find the signet ring their families have been fighting over for years.

James Anderton’s a gentleman with a thriving estate & horse breeding business, but, he’s secretly training to be a doctor. Having a profession considered beneath a gentleman threatens his family’s name & status, but his conscience won’t let him quit. When his troublesome neighbor lands in a bit of trouble & discovers his secret, he agrees to her scheme to find the root of their family’s feud & end it once & for all, if he can keep his heart fully intact in the process.

I loved Sera & James! The attraction between them sizzles & I thoroughly enjoyed their witty banter. Sera’s an energetic force to be reckoned with, while James is more of a serious grump. Together, they bring out the best in each other. I enjoyed how they inspired each other to let go of their fears & risk their family’s wrath to find happiness.

The side characters were fantastic. I enjoyed the kind, thoughtful Dr. Jennings whom James shadows, as well as Sera’s younger brother Tom. I also loved seeing Bridget & Julianna again from the previous book in the series. And, who can forget Lord Duckworth who plays a mischievous role in this story too.

I enjoyed the mystery of the feud, notes in the wall, & the search for the ring. Highly recommend this darling story! I received an advanced copy from the author with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own & provided voluntarily.

A notorious feud between two of societies neighboring families spanning three generations is alive and well.

Miss Serafina Taylor is banished to Bath to avoid causing a scandal that could ruin her sister’s prospects. Her love for horses and competitive spirit are her only compensation for the constant pain she endures from a childhood injury that was never properly mended—an injury that prevents her from fully participating in society. Even those closest to her remain unaware of the painful condition she conceals.
Desperate to avoid a dull summer and eager to ride again, she blackmails her frustratingly handsome enemy into helping her search for her family’s missing signet ring—the very object that sparked the rift between their families.

Mr. James Anderton avoids the Taylors at all costs. His last encounter with one, as a child, left him with lasting guilt—guilt that drove him to secretly study medicine under the tutelage of the local doctor. Were society to learn of his unsanctioned practice, he would be disgraced. But worse still is the fear of his mother discovering the truth.
Serafina returns to Bath a striking beauty with raven-black hair. Thanks to James’s trained eye, he immediately sees she’s still suffering from her old injury. When she discovers his secret, she strikes a deal: in exchange for her silence, he must help her solve the mystery of the infamous lost ring—and win her a racehorse.

What begins as forbidden contact and uneasy cooperation soon deepens into a fragile friendship, and then something far more dangerous: affection. As they grow to depend on each other—for inspiration, redemption, and intrigue—the ancient feud between their families is challenged as they discover the truth to the bitter legacy.

Sera Taylor never backs down from a challenge. So, when James Anderton issues a dare to prove the guilt (or innocence) of a wrong from years past, Sera readily accepts. I laughed several times as Sera climbs walls, races cats, and races horses. She is such a determined lady, not willing to admit or show how badly her leg pains her. I admired her grit and determination to not let her injury get her down or stop her from doing things.

James Anderton is doctoring on the sly since he knows it’s below his social station and his grandmother wouldn’t approve. His compassion for those in need was just one of the things I found endearing. His willingness to let the past be just that and help Sera locate a missing ring to end their families’ feud showed a facet of his personality that spoke of the transformation that happened in his life.

Things to enjoy:
horse racing
wall climbing
humor
mystery
enemies to more
doctor’s family
Lord Duckworth challenge
notes in the wall

This is the fifth book in the Hearts of Somerset series. While it can be read as a standalone, I recommend you read them in order to get the most out of the book. Ms. Hampton did a great job in including characters from previous stories in the series, even though they were written by other authors. It was fun to see Bridget again; she is such a sweet little girl. I recommend this to readers of all ages who like Regency love stories.

I received this complimentary copy of the book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

A fun romance of feuding families!
I really enjoyed this story of love, reconciliation and being accepted as we are.
Serafina is a force of nature but needs to learn to value herself and let others care for her. And there's sweet James, always caring and kind.
I also loved Seraphina's younger brother, he was so protective and loving towards her.

The feud between the Taylor and Anderton families is known throughout Bath. A missing ring decades ago broke all ties between them.
So when two descendants of these families are attracted to each other, things get complicated. Can Serafina and James bring them back together?
When an unlikely friendship develops between Serafina Taylor and James Anderton, they decide to search for the famous ring.
At first it's just to end the feud, but as their feelings for each other grow, it may be the only way to have a future together.
As they try to solve the mystery, they both struggle to be accepted, James with his interest in medicine and Seraphina with her leg injury that she always tries to hide.

You will find:
🐎 Dual POV
🐎 Neighbors Enemies
🐎 Mysteries
🐎 Secret messages
🐎 Forbidden Love
🐎 Sweet and Funny moments

An Unrivaled Match by @authorbrookehampton
Hearts of Somerset, book 5
Multi-Author Series

Absolutely beautiful, touching, and lovely story. I picked this song for the way the two MMC’s try to rewrite the course of their families lives. I felt Romeo and Juliet vibes because of the feud between their families.

If you are fond of stolen kisses, hidden notes along a stone wall, mystery and secrets, and the chemistry and tension behind forbidden love, then this story is for you.

Seraphina Taylor (Sera), has never been able to back down from a challenge which has placed her in a few scrapes and bad circumstances. In continual pain from a incorrectly healed broken leg, the only thing she has found to alleviate that pain is riding a horse and so of course when challenged, by her neighbor, she adds a horse as her prize if she wins.

James Anderton has a secret and strikes a deal with Sera to keep her quiet once she discovers it, but he also uses the bargain as a way to ease his guilt and spend more time with the woman that he’s always been drawn to.

Will the family feud be too much to overcome? Will the mystery behind how it started ever come to light? Will Lord Duckworth ever be caught?

I loved this story and can’t wait to go read the rest in the series. Thank you Brooke for the eARC copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Blurb:
Miss Seraphina Taylor would love to prove her worth to those around her, but she simply cannot turn down a challenge—which lands her in trouble…again. In her attempts to turn her luck around, she falls upon an opportunity to win herself a horse. So, she strikes a bargain with her family’s enemy: gentleman next door.

Great book! Seraphine is so funny and I love the banter between she and James, is perfect! And Lord Duckworth...hilarious!
As always great work Amanda !

The Brief: Sera and James are neighbors and the lines are drawn with more than a fence. The rivalry stems from a stolen signet ring.

The Debrief: Sera is spunky and does not let her injury keep her from life. Or trouble. James is more like a rule follower, but has his own dreams. I loved them both! Their friendship was fun and reading their individual thoughts brought all the warm fuzzies. There is a sweet love that blooms and I was there for all the sibling mischief and slow burn banter. It gives Romeo and Juliet vibes, but without poison and dumb death.

The Rhyme: Although Sera's leg is painful, she’s determined to find the missing ring while hoping for the freedom of a horse. Can James help her heal the rift between their families and lead them on a healing course?

Part of a fun series, but can absolutely stand alone. I’m a new huge fan! My thoughts. Kissing only.

Regency next door neighbors for the win! This was such a cute read. Sera and James have been told they are enemies their entire lives. Which makes it rather unfortunate that the both of them are attracted to one another. I loved how their relationship developed through a common goal of finding the missing signet ring and how they learned to trust one another. I particular enjoyed the way James used his doctoring skills to so tenderly care for Sera. It was beautiful to watch her learn to trust him and to realize she was deserving of love despite her struggles. So many cute moments between these two (and so much delicious tension) and loads of mystery. Throw in a mischievous, ill-tempered duck and a group of gossiping grandmas, and this makes for a splendid read!

Sweet Regency Romeo and Juliet

I can always count on Brooke Hampton for a sweet historical romance! I really enjoyed this rival families romance. Loved Sera and her fiery personality and how she “knew her own mind and heart” loved her relationship with Tom and how they were always up to mischief especially when their neighbor was involved. Loved James-motivated by decisions he made in the past to become a doctor even though his inheritance made it so he didn’t have to work. I’m always a sucker for how medicine was practiced in history! It fascinated me! Loved the mystery with the missing Signet ring. And this one definitely didn’t skimp on the kisses. I would definitely recommend this one!

An Unrivaled Match is a sweet new Regency romance and I think my new favorite of Brooke’s books for me. Sera and James were both the kind of characters you can get behind and cheer for simply because they are genuinely so good. I really loved the way they overcame obstacles, learned to speak their truth, and fell in love.
Read this for:
*Forbidden romance
*Boy next door
*Bit of mystery
*Dual POV romance
*Gentleman doctor
*Secret friendship
*Stubborn heroine
*The kisses
*Lord Duckworth
*Happy ever after
I really enjoyed the sort of star-crossed lovers aspect and how the forbidden nature of their romance upped the ante, but also how they were determined to discover the truth behind their families’ feud. It had some humor elements and depth to it. I recommend this book.

This was such a sweet regency read! I loved the "trope" of next door neighbors! An Unrivaled Match is a perfect blend of historical detail, sweet romance, and a spattering of comedic moments. Perfect for fans of Joanna Barker and Kasey Stockton! This was my first read by Brooke Hampton, and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves Regency era stories and cozy mysteries.
I received an e-book copy from the author. All opinions are my own!

This series gets better with every book.

I love the author's writing and how easily she had us believing in this enemies to lovers romance.

The characters are well written and a little rebellious and I adore that. I loved the inner monologues to their confessions to the letters they wrote to each other.

Hampton crafted an adorably spunky period romance piece. Her FMC was crafty and youthful, the MMC mature and kind. I loved both of them instantly.
I loved how Sera and James both grew so much as people and their romance was sweet, full of gentle, hopeful and overcoming love. I loved the Romeo and Juliet vibes with a happy ending.

MCs: James and Sera

My thoughts: This was an absolutely adorable read! A sweet romance with a flavor of mystery which involves a missing signet ring. I love how Sera doesn’t let anything get in her way despite her old injury and how James just wants to put old family rivalry behind them. Other things I loved include:
🐴 She loves horses
🐴 Secret physician training
🐴 Sneaking into houses
🐴 Secret letter writing
🐴 Cellar kisses
🐴 Lord Duckworth

Oh, how I recommend this book for any regency fan!

“Say my name like I’m courting you, like you cannot help yourself from thinking of me in that familiar way.”

Oh my goodness @authorbrookehampton is quickly becoming a favorite author for me in the regency genre! I absolutely LOVED it. When I started reading I immediately got, All Creatures Great and Small Vibes (one of my favorite TV shows), just replace the vet aspect with a doctor. I completely adored Sera and James. Sera’s is endearing, feisty, adventurous, loving, and strong. James is compassionate, smart, gentle, and loyal! I loved watching them try to get to the bottom of their family feud and learn to let the past go. This book was full of fun, heartwarming, and swoony moments! It’s out today and if you’re looking for a good regency you need to give it a try!

Family feud galore but also mystery, witty banter, unexpected kindness, a sweet romance.
Such a beautiful story of love and forgiveness, of seeing worth and letting go of pride.

This is my favorite of Brooke's books so far. I was engaged from start to finish. Her characters, their growth, their banter--*chef's kiss.* I could hardly put it down. I highly recommend this one to anyone who enjoys Regency romance.

I loved this book! I thought the characters were so well done. I loved Sera’s fight and spirit. The portrayal of her struggles and along with her positivity were so well done. I also loved seeing the development of both Sera and James as they learned from each other.
