Zagreus (Zack), the son of Hades, and his former guardian angel, Michael, live a quiet life of gardening, animal rescue, and playful sexual experimentation. They have a house near the beach, family close by and each other. This should be the happily ever after of every god's dreams.
But lately, strange misgivings have plagued Zack, a sense of something dark and powerful approaching. Since he can't pin down a source, he dismisses his instincts. Why borrow trouble? That is, until Michael begins to have strange mood swings and a dark stranger appears in the garden one night. Zack will need to battle time itself or lose both his hard-won peace and the love of his immortal life.
Angel Martinez currently lives part time in the hectic sprawl of northern Delaware and full time inside her head. She has one husband, one son, two cats, a love of all things beautiful and a terrible addiction to the consumption of both knowledge and chocolate.

Get your mythology geek on with this fallen angel story.
Fun mashup of a multitude of deities with a heavy Greek bias. Loved how the gods traits played into the story. And like all good epics there's petty evil that destroys beauty and blood sacrifice. Anyway, answers the question: What do gods do when we forget them?
Pssst... There was this whole nasty lovers' nicknames thing that happened that I sped through and promised never to remember again. You've been warned.
Described as “A Brandywine Investigations Universe Story”, Angel Martinez’s contribution to this year’s annual “Love’s Landscape” event shares the same universe to her last year’s (published) release Canines, Crosshairs And Corpses. I have not read that one – a fact that I have to remedy immediately – but I think it’s very easy for readers to dig into this one without having to read it. The published story is about Hades and his new human lover. In this free story, it’s about Hades’s son, Zack (original name Zagreus) and his long-time lover, Michael, the fallen angel.
I think Ms. Martinez has created a charming ‘urban fantasy’ world, where Greek Gods are living in contemporary world. On top of that, this story features an established couple and a theme that might have been rehashed many times over, but nonetheless still powerfully speak to many romance lovers out there. It is “fighting to save your loved ones”, even if it’s painful, even if it’s heartbreaking. If there is a beacon of hope to save the people you love, you should grab it and hang on to it tight.
That kind of heartbreaking fight is what Zack is facing in this story – when an evil power is taking his lover away to the brink of insanity. Zack refuses to back down. Zack knows that his gentle lover, the angel that is willing to fall for him, is still in there somewhere. Zack has to make a difficult decision, but it’s one that he needs to take to save Michael, and oh he will take it. My heart is just in pain for him.
For those who worry that this would be nothing but bleak theme and action/adventure as Zack goes to try saving Michael, there is still a lovely and quite HOT moment in the beginning, where Michael is giving sounding to Zack. Yes, that is right, sounding. I usually relate this activity to some sort of non/con or dub/con story. But somehow, Ms. Martinez is able to write this as a very tender yet consensual activity between established couple who has been together for so many years. That could be count as the romance part, and gives readers glimpse on the happy life this couple have, which also include small things like how they try to call each other with outrageous endearments in tongue-in-cheek manner.
So I love the characters, I love the writing, I love the description of that foreboding sense when Zack realizes something is wrong (so enthralling), I love the relationship between Zack and his father and his cousins, I love the way Zack fights for his Michael ... conclusion, I just love everything in this story.
I’m giving this story a near perfect rating because of my greedy heart. This story ends in a strong ‘Hopeful For Now’ and I really wish that Ms. Martinez is willing to expand few more pages just to assure me of HEA. I will also be delighted if Ms. Martinez could write a separate story on how Zack and Michael met and how they became lovers and the ‘fall’ that happened to Michael to be with Zack. I think it will be a beautiful story as well. Oh, also a tiny complaint on how the villain is not really being taken care of.
Last year’s contribution of Ms. Martinez Prisoner 374215 was one of my top 10 favorites of the similar event. I think it is safely to say that this year’s, No Enemy But Time will be on this year's list.
This story is from Angel's Brandywine Investigations Universe, which we were introduced to in Canines, Crosshairs And Corpses featuring Hades. In this story, we have his son, Zagreus (aka Zack) and his lover, the fallen angel, Michael. In this story, we get a mix of mythologies and it works: the Greek mythology mixed in with Christian belief system.
First off, this story is not an easy read, as some would say, but it is well written and well done. It has touchy subjects for people so if you are of the faint of heart or prefer lighter reads, then this might not be the story for you. This is definitely tilted toward Urban Fantasy more than it is romance. Is there romance? Oh yes, very much so. The lovers' scene at the beginning of the story is extremely hot. The strength and tenderness at the end captures your heart. But the story is so much more than that.
It is a story about fighting for a lover and willing to do what it takes when your lover is no longer the person you recognize. (One could compare this story to issues relating to mental health, but with a fantasy twist.) It deals with how people's love can blind them to the truths or things they don't want to see about their lover. Many times when things go wrong, it is those closest to the person that can't face the problems. It is heartbreaking as well as hopeful. It shows sometimes hard choices have to be made and there are consequences for those actions.
And Zach does that. He fights for Michael, he doesn't give up, and he loves. Oh, he loves Michael so much. And Michael, his kind heart, his soul. It's so bright, and when it darkens, Zach believes in Michael so much. There are consequences they both have to live with in this story, but with their love, they will plant the new seeds of a love reborn and grow together.
Angel does not shy away from complex heroes or choices in the story. The conflict is heavy and the solution less than ideal, but expertly handled, realistically handled. The hopeful ending is just that, hopeful after much heartache for our pair of lovers.
2.5 Stars I really liked the beginning of this take on Greek mythology. It had gods, demigods and fallen angels, and my first look at something I've never read about before.
Michael, once a guardian angel to Zach, fell in love which is forbidden. It was that very love that saved him from the typical violence and loss of compassion that encompasses those that "fall" and lose their wings. After years of peace, their blissful life is put at risk. Something sinister is afoot, and Zach must rescue Michael again. It is that very rescue and the subsequent fallout, that for me, wasn't very satisfactory. I guess I wanted a more romantic, clear cut resolution - and I didn't get that here. This is part of a series but it revolves around other characters so I don't think I'm going to find further answers elsewhere.
I really loved how their relationship was portrayed, but for me the conclusion fell short.
I am so glad I remember my gods and mythology! I can also see how frustrating it might be for those who don't.
As it is, to me, it was absolutely perfect, even the imperfect ending. However, a sequel or two, or a prequel, or a revised and published edition, or any amount of in-between stories would be simply wonderful.
I have a feeling Mammetun won't just give up on Michael and Zack that easily. There must be more!
A sad, beautiful story about an established couple, deeply in love. There was hope at the end, but I wanted more. More time with them together, to see their relationship working, to get to know them as a couple. And more time with Michael being himself. Because this was more of a story about Zack's love for Michael than a story about their love for each other.
I loved the mythology and the plot, but I needed more time on the relationship.
Just like the first book in the ‘Brandywine Investigations’ series, ‘Canines, Crosshairs, and Corpses’, this second story is also set in the Brandywine universe. And while it had a similarly profound effect on me, its tone and the emotions it caused as I read it, could not be more different from the first volume. Yes, the sense of humor is the same, with the gods of old trying to deal with modern life, but the essence of the story is far more serious and darker than I was expecting. I guess that is what happens when a fallen angel and a son of Hades get together, trying to make a life for themselves. And despite the fact it lacks a “proper” (i.e., explicit) happy ending, something I am a huge fan of, I have to say it is an outstanding story. Actually, all in all, it is an excellent ending in line with the story’s theme.
Zack and Michael must be one of the oddest couples ever. Zack may be the son of Hades, but he moved out of the Underworld to make a life for himself. He doesn’t go around torturing small children or killing anything, he gets involved in animal rescue. In short, he is a really nice guy. Michael being around must have something to do with that, so when something begins to chip at Michael’s remaining goodness and decency, Zack is understandably perturbed. Worry changes into iron determination when he figures out what is going on, and what he ends up having to do to save Michael, almost destroys him.
I hate to admit it, but sometimes love really is not enough. What Angel Martinez has shown in this story is actually far more powerful. In Zack and Michael’s case, love requires Zack to do something horrible and painful, and it almost destroys him. But nothing other than love could have made him do it and then live with the consequences. A very powerful message indeed!
If you like stories that challenge accepted wisdom about what a love story should look like, if you believe it is always darkest before the sun rises once again, and if you’re looking for a read that will put you through an emotional roller coaster before spitting you out and making you wonder what just happened, then you will probably like this novella. I certainly won’t forget it anytime soon!
Something is wrong with fallen angel, Michael. He’s suffering from nausea and mood swings (no, this isn’t an Mpreg story), and has fierce bouts of anger that are starting to frighten his lover, Zack.
It seems that a kiss to Zack (Zagreus) millennia ago, resulted in Michael losing his wings. But, now, there’s some weird ‘other’ Michael who keeps appearing to Zack, aggressive and a bit menacing. This Michael sprouts glossy black wings, not the white of before.
Zack just happens to be a god in his own right; he’s the son of Hades, Dark Lord of the Underworld. When Michael is threatened, Zack calls on dad and his lover, Tiberius (not the Roman emperor, just a human), for help.
I really liked the referencing to Greek and Roman mythology. Here, Zack, or Zagreus, a lesser-known Greek god of the hunt, lives in quiet domesticity with his lover. He’s a bird rescuer… so, from hunter to rescuer… interesting. There is a playfulness to it all that the author successfully threads through the melancholy tone. See this convo between Zack and Tiberius:
“So. God of the hunt? Is that right?”
“Sort of. Not like my cousin, Artemis. I don’t kill what I catch, but yeah. I’m more of a resurrection god, though, you know, like Mithras and shit like that.”
Zack and his Michael have a sweet, sensual love even after being together for years. Theirs is a story of everlasting love, of love in danger, as Zack tries desperately to find out what is happening to his lover. I really liked it.
Could you write more about Michael and Zack please? I want to see where they go from here so badly it hurts. Thanks.
This was such a refreshing take on mythology - Greek gods existing in the everyday world. I loved this story. The author wrote a wonderful tale about a deep and fierce love, about doing what one must even if it's not what you want, and quiet hope that love endures. Well written, with beautiful detail to the world building, this was a pleasure to read. The author did an excellent job getting you to feel the love Zach and Michael share and the heaviness weighing Zach trying to save his Angel. I want to read more and hope that I'll be able to visit these characters in the future.
Wonderful addition to the Loves Landscapes event. Highly recommended. Thanks to the author for their time and participation.
I have no idea why I didn't review this story before. It was written based on my prompt after all. I love the characters and their relationship. Now I have to go back and read the first book in the series.
This is one of Ms Martinez's darker stories, and not something to read when you are looking for a concrete happy ending. Having said that, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read more about this couple. Very much worth reading, this story explores what someone is willing to do for the person they love, and sometimes what they have to do.
The whole story worked for me... but, that last scene? I was bawling my eyes out! Yes, love SHOULD be enough... but, sometimes it's not... and that is usually when the hardest decisions of your life are made, then all you can do is sit back and hope that love will see you through. *sigh*
And, WOW... I really need to get more knowledgeable about these Greek Gods issues! Just sayin'!!!
I always enjoy the “Don’t Read in the Closet” events that the Goodreads M/M Romance Group hosts every year. This year’s theme is Love’s Landscapes. I have found many new authors through these events and it is fun to get free short stories from some of my favorite authors too.
Which brings me to No Enemy But Time by Angel Martinez. I am a fan of Angel’s writing. She writes M/M sci-fi and fantasy. She can be light and humorous or deliciously dark. This story is a little mix of both. Zack and Michael have been together a while, a committed couple, very much in love. Michael is an angel that fell when he fell in love with Zack (Zagreus), son of Hades. It seems that many fallen angels succumb to a darker side over time. The love between Michael and Zack has been strong enough to keep him stable so far, but Zack notices changes in his lover and is worried but dismisses it...
This was a beautifully written story, and I liked how much detail was given to build the world. Angel Martinez did a great job fleshing out the relationship and love between Zack and Michael within a small number of pages. Also, seeing Tiberius and Hades again was great. But, I don't consider it even a HFN ending, cause the ending was just kinda depressing to me. So be warned. And, I hate when the evildoer is left with zero consequences. What's going to keep her from doing the same kind of thing to someone else in the future? I'm one of those people who needs a HEA ending or an extremely strong HFN. It's a flaw in me not the story, but if you're similar to me, you'll be left with an unfinished feeling. But, if you're ok with hopefully optimistic, then this is a great story. I hope both characters show up in the next book.
This was a complete surprise. My first book by Angel Martinez. But I do like fantasy, especially around "the gods" and angels, and I loved this. I was also sniffly at the end, and I am not a crier.
Not as good as the first. I was disappointed that the story didn’t center in Hades and Ti. Still, Zack and Michael were interesting characters and the ending made me very emotional. Moving onto number three.
Oh…. I have read a bunch of the various Goodreads stories starting with a photo and a prompt. Some are not great, some are good, and a few are great. This is one of the great ones. Dark and bittersweet…
With No Enemy But Time, we see the dark side of this Greek myth infused world. Zack, the son of Hades, lives in a small home with Michael, a fallen angel. Their story began 25 years ago, and we really don’t get much about it, other than a few memories. Their lives have been perfect since though, living in their house, Michael with a lovely garden, and Zack helping with wild bird conservation. Zack begins to notice some personality changes in Michael but has no idea what is happening with him. Michael is aware he’s been feeling odd, but also isn’t sure why. Unfortunately they wait to long to get help and bad shit goes down.
I’ll stop with the plot there, this is a short book and I don’t want to give too much away. I’ll just add that Bad Things happen, and we see Hades and Ti, plus a few of the other gods, all coming together as a family to fight for Zack and Michael. I loved the inclusion of the other characters, but also liked Zack’s desire to fight his own battle. He nows when to be alone, and when to accept help. These isn’t a lot of sex in this story, one nice scene with a bit of toy play tossed in, but it’s not about that. There is a deep emotional bond between Zack and Michael, and that is the only thing that saves them. The ending is just a little bittersweet…. and worked so very well for this story.
I have said it before about Angel’s UF books, she is a master at world building. This series is just another example of her mastery. Damn, her brain is a strange and wonderful place. The mixing of myth and reality is seamless. I am amazed at the amount of effort she puts in to a simple little free story is amazing.

You know, for a pervading sense of darkness and unease, there were a few times where it's identified and described quite abbreviatedly and definitely. It took a too-large step forward too quickly, and then tried to backtrack and build tension, but too much was revealed too soon. Kind of like
But yeah, it rushes to get to the meat of the plot when it could have done better with holding back some more, building up the tension, letting the scenes play out instead of rushing to tell us what happened and how.
The concepts do appear quite intriguing, though, and the moments where the authors shows us what happens are good, but there's just too much telling us that oh, this happened because this, and because of this, this was the result, and then after thinking about it, MC decided this, and so that's what MC did.
What a shame. So much potential... I guess that means this concept could do with more time for the author to mull over it, flesh out a great portion of it, find the pulse of the story and weave the subtlety in the reveals.
