The Rules of Falling for You

The perfect match can't be far--certainly not at a Regency-themed singles retreat--or so podcaster Zoe Dufour believes. After years of creating content for her relationship podcast inspired by Regency etiquette and era-appropriate rules for romance, she knows her listeners have anticipated this retreat. But she also attends with expectations of her finding the ideal modern-day gentleman who can meet every one of the nonnegotiables on her checklist.

Harrison Lundquist, Zoe's podcast producer and best friend's brother, reluctantly agrees to attend the retreat to capture footage while seeking a career-advancing promotion. He views the retreat as ridiculous. And Zoe's methods for finding her real-life Mr. Darcy? Downright absurd! But as he films her whirlwind dates, his growing feelings for her are sidelined by suitors vying for her attention. When Zoe realizes her ideal checklist might be holding her back, she must decide if she's willing to rewrite her rules and take a chance on the person who has been there all along.

With this Regency-infused spin on a contemporary rom-com, Mollie Rushmeyer's witty characters, touch of whimsy, and sweet romance will win hearts.

What a delightful Christian rom-com with a Jane Austen twist!

Read if you like:

- Best Friends Brother Trope
- Jane Austen Elements in Books
- Podcast Details
- Books that make you Laugh
- Romance with lists/rules
- Regency References
- Forced Proximity
- Diabetes Rep
- Secret Admirer Letters
This was very charming. I liked how the author combined the regency inspired romance with a modern rom-com setting. We follow Harrison and Zoe in this book. Harrison is Zoe's podcast producer and best friend's brother. He agrees to attend a regency themed singles retreat with her to capture footage as Zoe searches for her real life "Mr. Darcy". Zoe has this ideal checklist, which undoubtedly has too many requirements lol. Harrison, the true man of her dreams, is right in front of her. When will she realize?

Harrison is such an honest man, a man of integrity. I loved how his cared about her. Zoe wasn't too sure about what to do with her feelings, but when things finally came to a close, I loved their resolution together. It was sweet.

This book beautifully highlights the message of trusting God’s timing instead of trying to control your love life with personal expectations or rigid “lists of requirements.” Usually those lists don’t truly matter and God’s plans are far greater. And even if you are not in a relationship, God's plan still remains true for your life.

I may have found myself being a little less engaged in some parts vs others, but overall I really enjoyed my time in this book. It made me smile, laugh and had the light hearted elements I enjoy in romance. Bonus points for this Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice fan here! :) p.s. 2005 P&P is my fav, haha!

Would recommend. Thank you to Bethany House for a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. All thoughts are my own.

This was such a fun story! I loved the best friend’s brother trope and the setting was perfect. Throw in some secondary character romances, unrequited love, secret admirer letters, and lots of lists and rules, and you’re in for a treat.

Harrison has had feelings for Zoe for years but has always been stuck in the friend zone. When he heads back home after a breakup, he takes a job working with Zoe and his sister on their podcast. His hope is to mend his friendship with Zoe. What he doesn’t expect is for all the old feelings to come rushing back. And worst of all, he is expected to film her dating at a singles retreat. If he can't have her, he wants to make sure only the best man does. But what if that best man is him? Would he take the risk of losing their friendship to throw his hat in the ring?

Zoe has always felt comfortable with Harrison. He’s always been there for her. But he’s her total opposite, and after many failed relationships, she needs a sure thing. So the list it is. As she and Harrison spend more time together, it’s hard not to notice how amazing he is with her. But he doesn’t follow the list, and he is only planning to stay in town temporarily. It seems far too risky to consider him as anything more than a friend. But is it a risk worth taking?

This was a fun read. Lots of Regency references, forced proximity, and the romance was oh so sweet. The side characters’ romances were just as enjoyable. I did have a few moments where I struggled to stay fully engaged, or maybe I just wasn’t grasping the depth of all the references to feel completely pulled in. But as the story went on, I found myself rooting for Harrison and Zoe and drawn into the push and pull of their feelings. Mollie has written a fun read with this one.

I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.

If you enjoy Regency romance, Jane Austen, podcasts, romcoms, dual perspectives and contemporary romance sprinkled with faith and humour, this is not one to miss!

Zoe Dufour, 29, believes waiting for her Mr Darcy is worth the wait. She’s been focused on finding him before her 30th birthday, and, after several mismatches and mishaps, she has compiled a list of requirements she’s looking for.

How wonderful to be reminded that there’s more to a relationship than chemistry and good looks. It’s also good to take time out to laugh at ourselves!

I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Pre-Read:
loving the regency era themed books this year 🫶
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for an Audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

During the read notes:
-I did not realize this was Christian fiction which is not my normal go-to. But it's always good to try new genres :)
-Why does Harrison keep calling himself a brother to Zoe? It's been a concerning amount of times.
-The narration pacing from Kyle Tait as our MMC is inconsistent enough to pull me out of the story, however Emma Faye as our FMC really has a believable podcast voice and I like her fast pace.
-I appreciate that even though this is a lighthearted romance book it's not romanticising their faith, with Zoe even discussing her struggles with her own faith.
-This is starting to show some odd traits, and I really hope that Zoe is going to want something more in life than just a husband. Because, it's just starting to feel like trad wife propaganda at this point.
-The obsession of being married by 30 is something I don't understand why we're still doing. but it just feels so infantilizing at points even though our FMC is 29.
- When someone mentions Ben "Oh brother, this guy STINKS"
-The level of regency dating rules is less Jane Austen and reads more as trad wife reasons
-I'm sorry but Kyle Tait doing a voice for a female character sounds like the discords mod memes and I cannot take it seriously
-The whole yearning situation is great, only when it turns into love. This "love" feels very service level for me :/

Overall, this story fell completely flat for me. The romance felt 2 dimensional and the characters constantly conflicted their own opinions. 1.75 ⭐️ rounded up

What I do like like about The Rules of Falling for You by Mollie Rushmeyer:
-The absolute pining from Harrison
-How much Zoe and Eden care about each other.
-Even though it's Christian fiction, it's not the focal point of the story

Why you might like this book:
-Clean, wholesome romance
-Brothers best friend
-HE falls first and long term pining
-Jane Austen SUPERFAN
-Historical costumes

~ Narrators ~
I listened to the audiobook and I may (at first) disliked the narrators but, soon enough it started clicking with the characters and I started imagining them to sound like the narrators.

~ Plot ~
This book had me rolling!!! So much humor and hilarious moments, and yet Rushmeyer puts the serious trials and faith into a greater perspective in how to live our lives to the fullest but still trusting in God, for He knows our future and does what is best for us.

—> Miss Zoe Dufour
The “Love advice by Regency rules” Podcaster. The Pride and Prejudice Enthusiast. The love of Harrison’s life…
She was great! A little stubborn at times (those times being a little more than frustrating with her choices regarding “suitors”) but she came through. I also felt like her having a chronic illness made her more real in a way for me.. I want to point out, as well, that she was a Plant Mama!! I literally kicked my feet and giggled 😂 (I don’t think I’ve ever read a book where the FMC is a plant lover.) 🤫It’s because my mom is one, haha🤫😂
Zoe had a sweet clumsiness about her and such a loving and shy spirit that made her so lovable.

—> Mr. Harrison Lundquist
The best friend’s brother. The podcast producer. The sweet guy who’s got it bad for his sister’s friend…
He was so hilarious and yet SO SWOONY! He was the reason I would burst out laughing while I was listening to the audiobook. And that library scene… and in his room.. *cough cough* [Blushes and giggles giddily] I’ll leave that to you in whether or not you want to find out what happens, and not just in those parts… every single one.

I just adored this book! A great lovely book with faith, love, and a whole lot of Regency vibes!
Would totally recommend! 💗💗

This story was so adorable! The references to Jane Austen and other regency era things abound throughout the story and I loved it! The regency marriage market event was so cute. Zoe and Harrison have a very cute relationship. I thought a sweet best friend’s brother story! And good Christian content too!

I will forever be chasing Jane Austin and her books. And for that reason, THE RULES OF FALLING FOR YOU caught my eye on the NetGalley list.

In this we meet podcaster Zoe Dufour. Her podcast centers around Regency etiquette and era-appropriate rules for romance, so of course Ms. Austin's books will make an appearance from time to time.
While her dating life leaves much to be desired, she has a great idea...she will compile a list of requirements and date regency style- with chaperones and all. This will make for great podcast content right?
Well, insert her best friend for laughs and who happens to bring along her brother as their producer and you've got some cute comedic moments. Harrison has his own POV in this, and we find a yearning for our FMC that is soooo Mr. Darcy-esque.

A very cute read, and closed door for those who prefer their romances sweet not spicy. This one is set for release September 2nd, so a big thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for an advanced listeners copy.

I went back and forth about this book a bit. Overall, I enjoyed this sweet best friend’s brother romance. It was also a friends to more romance, as well, since Harrison and Zoe grew up as friends, too.

I really liked how well Harrison knew Zoe and how much he was tuned into what she needed health wise with her diabetes. He was so attentive to her needs and provided wonderful support for her at all times.

I did eventually find myself frustrated with Zoe simply because once Harrison made his interest and intentions fairly clear and was very straightforward in how he was feeling toward Zoe, she still wavered between seeming to not understand that he cared for her and thinking she needed someone completely different than Harrison. So, although I liked these two and wanted them to find happiness together, I also found myself wondering how Zoe could be such a bad judge of character over and over again.

I liked that the audio book was narrated by dual narrators and even with my frustrations with Zoe at times, I still enjoyed the story. I did enjoy that there was a clear faith thread throughout the novel.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Podcaster Zoe Dufour heads to a Regency-themed singles retreat, determined to meet her ideal gentleman who checks every box on her list. But her producer—and best friend’s brother—Harrison thinks the whole idea is absurd. As sparks fly behind the camera, Zoe must decide if love looks less like rules and more like risk.

I’m basically this main character and I feel exposed 🙈😂 There is no one who loves a list more, struggles to realize perfectionism isn’t always good, yet wholeheartedly believes the perfect romance is out there. Her optimism is infectious, but her heartfelt fears are what will endear you most. They’re certainly what endeared Harrison 🥹 This man is down bad and men should take notes on his dedication to pining. There’s something so pure about his angsty unrequited love that makes this burly, hockey-playing man tender. Honey, if someone is willing to cosplay for you, there’s no need to question their commitment.

If you’re a fan of Jane Austen, Austenland, or any form of Regency romance—AND cosplay—I’ve found your book of the year.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention how comforting both characters’ quick little thoughts to God were. This author has a beautifully effortless way of showing how present the Lord can be in any moment without having to frame every scene around prayer or faith.

Thank you @bethanyhousefiction for the ARC 🥰 #BHPFiction I am so looking forward to reading Mollie’s next book to see where she takes this spunky and heartfelt writing style of hers.

Overall: 2.75⭐️ (rounded up)
• Audiobook Narration: 1.75⭐️
• Prose/Story: 3.25⭐️

This one was tough to get through—and unfortunately, the narration played the biggest role in that struggle. I genuinely dislike when an audiobook performance impacts my overall rating of a story, but in this case, it was impossible to ignore. I did round up, though my gut was leaning closer to a 2⭐️.

The Story:
The prose itself was fine, and I really enjoyed the concept. The blend of present-day storytelling with historical fiction touches was engaging, and it even made me want to take a vacation and have an adventure like this myself. Under different circumstances, I think I would have enjoyed the book more.

The Audio:
The audiobook is dual narrated by Emma Faye and Kyle Tait. At first, Faye’s narration seemed promising—her natural pace was refreshingly brisk, and she had a sweet, pleasant tone. However, at times her words blurred together, making it difficult to catch every detail at normal speed. Still, that would have been an easy adjustment on my end.

Things shifted in Chapter 3 when Tait’s narration began. His pacing was drastically different—painfully slow compared to Faye’s quick delivery. Normally, dual narrators try to match rhythms so listeners don’t have to constantly adjust playback speeds. That balance was missing here, and it pulled me out of the story again and again.

In addition to pacing, his delivery style just didn’t work for me. Many words came across as overly deliberate or even questioning mid-sentence, which left me unsettled and distracted from the plot. I ended up listening at 1.75x just to make it manageable, but that meant Faye’s chapters were sped up too fast. I’m surprised this discrepancy wasn’t caught during production, as it made for a frustrating and, at times, uncomfortable listening experience.

Final Thoughts:
The story itself had potential, with a charming plot and some enjoyable touches. Unfortunately, the audiobook production undermined that potential. If you’re interested in picking this one up, I’d recommend skipping the audio and waiting for the ebook or physical edition when it releases on September 2nd.

I was fortunate to receive a complimentary ALC from Tantor Audio NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts.

How I Rate
Because I mostly read ARCs, I focus on how I think fellow readers with similar tastes will respond. I sometimes round up or down based on pacing, prose, or overall impact, and I try to keep my personal preferences from weighing too heavily.

⭐️ 1 Star – Finished, but not for me; I never DNF ARCs.
⭐️⭐️ 2 Stars – Struggled due to writing, content, or editing issues.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 Stars – Decent read with untapped potential; recommend with some reservations.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars – Really enjoyed it and would recommend for several reasons.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars – Exceptional; lingers in my mind well after reading. A story I’d gladly revisit.

Title: The Rules of Falling for You
Author: Mollie Rushmeyer
Genre: Romcom
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Synopsis: Zoe Dufour with the help of her best friend Eden has gained quite the online following with her Regency-romance themed podcast, but her real life romance is lacking to say the least. As she nears thirty, she increasingly feels the pressure to find a man before she’s an old maid. But her rules of dating seem to be a little outdated. Until she stumbles upon the Minnesota Marriage Mart—a Regency-themed singles retreat. Seeing this as the perfect podcast opportunity, Zoe and her team—which now includes Zoe’s older brother Harrison—set out to see if Zoe can find her perfect match and record some good content in the process. And Harrison is dreading it. And as much as he cares for his sister and her best friend, he’d rather be anywhere else. But as the dates turn into disasters, Harrison realizes his care may be deeper than he thinks. Will Zoe be able to see the Regency man she’s looking for has been there all along?

Analysis: Can I just tell you what an adorable story this is?! This has a Pride and Prejudice meets Bride Wars feel but with a bit of a gender twist. Even though I’m not a huge classics reader, this book met all the marks with the regency references set in modern time! I think any Jane Austen fan will absolutely love this one. It’s cute and sweet and oh-so-funny! Some of Zoe’s failed dates still bring a smile to my face 😂 I wouldn’t put this one as super realistic (even though I did tell Mollie she should work on that regency retreat 😉). But I think you’ll find you relate to the characters and their emotions. I also loved how Mollie added the faith elements without it feeling forced or cheesy. If you’re looking for a sweet romcom to close out your summer, this is the perfect book to try!

Oh my goodness, what a delightful book! It’s equal parts fun, meaningful, and sweet with the kind of swoony tension that kept me forgetting to breathe and had me fanning just from locked gazes. (I mean… ok Zoe, I know you prefer the BBC adaption of P&P but the sparks of suppressed longing between you and Harrison are ‘Matthew Macfadyen’s hand flex’ level of delicious.) The friendship between Zoe and Eden (Harrison’s sister) made me smile as much as Harrison and Zoe made me swoon, and the addition of Jake to their group dynamics was the perfection I didn’t know I needed. Mollie Rushmeyer’s writing voice brims with wit and heart, and I didn’t want to stop reading once I’d started. She throws in enough drama to keep it from being too easy for Harrison to reveal his feelings for Zoe but not so much that it felt unrealistic or frustrated me.

We all know how much I love a good friends-to-more romance, and The Rules of Falling for You definitely fits the bill – with an added layer of ‘best friend’s brother’ (or ‘sister’s best friend’, depending on whose POV you’re using) to make it even more spark-filled and grin-inducing. From the first moment we see Harrison’s gaze twinkling at Zoe across the restaurant in the opening scene, I knew I was in love. With him, yes of course, but also with THEM and their romance potential. I stayed enthusiastically invested in their waltz around each other, rooting (sometimes out loud) for these two to finally get their feelings sorted out. (Translation: Yes, i yelled at fictional characters. Don’t judge me.) Adding to my enjoyment was Harrison’s reluctant participation in all things Regency despite being a pretty wonderful amalgamation of Austen’s most beloved heroes, flaws and all. Zoe’s infectious enthusiasm for finding her own perfect hero makes her relatable to so many of us who have been in love with romance since we knew what it was, and so do the important lessons she learns about herself, about surrender, and about true Love along the way.

Bottom Line: The Rules of Falling for You by Mollie Rushmeyer is a delightful friends-to-more romance brimming with breathless chemistry, giggle-out-loud moments, all things Austen, and heartfelt lessons of faith. I would love having Zoe and Eden as besties, and I certainly wouldn’t complain about spending time with Harrison either. Nor would I complain about another book with these characters, especially if it involved getting Eden and Jake’s POV from the singles’ retreat! With a slow-burn tension worthy of a BBC period drama, The Rules of Falling for You is as entertaining and swoony as it is tender. Definitely a romance and characters you’ll root for from the very first page. (And, seriously, have I mentioned how swoony it is??) Perfect for fans of Jane Austen, Pepper Basham, and Austenland!

The Rules of Falling for You is a Christian rom-com that is also a love letter to Jane Austen and all things Regency. Zoe Dufour is the creator and host of a relationship podcast inspired by Regency-era etiquette and romance. She has a checklist of nonnegotiables for her own relationships, and it doesn’t look like anyone will ever measure up to her sky-high expectations. Enter news of the Minnesota Marriage Mart, a Regency-inspired single’s retreat. If Zoe can ever find her perfect modern gentleman, it will surely be here. She is joined at the retreat by her best friend and podcast co-founder, Eden, as well as Eden’s brother, Harrison, the podcast’s new producer. Harrison has carried a torch for Zoe for years, but she can’t seem to see him outside of being her best friend’s brother. Not that he could ever hope to win her heart, anyway, as he knows they don’t make sense on paper. And then there’s that checklist of hers…

I liked both Zoe and Harrison immediately. The supporting cast, from others involved in the podcast like Eden and Jake, to fellow retreat attendees like Sophia and Milton, were really charming additions to the story. I related a lot to Zoe, to her love of books and to her accident prone tendencies. But the miscommunication and Zoe’s focus on her list drove me crazy on occasion. I know that there wouldn’t have been much to the plot without those elements as sources of tension, though. Someone can seem perfect for you on paper, but that doesn't mean they're actually the right person for you. And that’s a lesson Zoe had to learn for herself.

I will always have a soft spot for books written specifically for book lovers, and this romance fits the bill. If you’re someone who loves classical literature, especially the works of Jane Austen, The Rules of Falling for You was written with you in mind. While being an Austenite isn’t a requirement for enjoying this novel, all of the references to her work and her characters added an extra layer of joy to my experience. I must confess, while part of me loves all the literary puns and jokes, another, smaller part of me found them cheesy. Incredibly enjoyable, but they did have me rolling my eyes on occasion. As for the faith element, I think Rushmeyer implemented it really well. It wasn’t a huge focus of the plot, but it was a steady presence in the lives of our protagonists, one that became more focal as they grew and came to understand more deeply that God is trustworthy, even in our darkest of times.. And it always felt organic, never forced.

The Rules of Falling for You is a hug of a book. If you’re looking for a story that feels like a Christian Hallmark movie in novel form, this is for you. And if you’re a lover of all things Regency, this is for you. It’s a charming story that brought a smile to my face every time I picked it up.

This was such a fun story! I mean how could you not love a story that has a female character that absolutely loves all things Regency and is obsessed with Jane Austen and a bestie who loves all things Lord of the Rings. There is definitely a best friends brother's trop on this story and I loved it! Harrison is quite the leading man and had some amazing swoony moments.

Harrison and Zoe have known each other since they were younger and have liked each other but circumstances made it to where they never professed their love towards each other, instead they remained great friends. Both Zoe and Harrison carry some baggage that they need to deal with. Zoe goes full force with this list of what seems impossible traits in looking for a mate. Harrison also has his own past hurts and believes that Zoe is living in this dream world and needs to step back into reality.

Overall I thought this was a great and fun story. There is a light faith thread throughout and it is told in dual point of view so you get both of their perspectives. The side characters were wonderful, I kind of want to know more about Harrison sister Eden and Jake... just a throwing it out there Ms. Rushmeyer!

I must confess. I’ve never been a regency fan, and I only read the classics because I was required to in college. I know enough to be dangerous, and that’s about it.

BUT…

Mollie Rushmeyer has me wanting to revisit the classics my girls fell in love with and still love today. Zoe is so much clumsy fun, all heart, and hosts her own podcast about all things proper and period.

Harrison is obviously in love with Zoe, but she’s his little sister’s best friend. And he doesn’t get the Regency inspired stuff and nonsense she’s peddling.

It doesn’t help that he’s a witness to the most humiliating moment of Zoe’s life and the stupid things he said.

He volunteers to help with the podcast and somehow gets roped into attending a real life Regency event.

And that’s when the hilarity ensues!

If you love etiquette and classic romantic literature, period dramas and all the fancy, you will love this book! And if you’re like me and are meh on the whole thing, guess what? You’re going to love this book too!

I received an advance copy from the publisher. I’m under no obligation and my review has not been solicited.

"We're just two imperfect people leaning into and giving back the grace and acceptance we've received."

This is Mollie Rushmeyer's debut in the romcom genre and it was such a fun adventure. Zoe's list-making, perfectionist, romance-loving first person voice was delightful to get to know. Zoe felt very real with her struggles, fears, and ambitions. Harrison was a relatable, down-to-earth hero who was completely devoted to Zoe though he suffered great angst from this unrequited love. His first person voice was sarcastic, witty, and charming. Their banter, as well as the banter between Eden and Harrison, was quite enjoyable. I loved how all things Regency were entwined in the story and how solid Zoe and Harrison's friendship was from the beginning. Yes, Harrison was Zoe's best friend's brother but he was also a very close friend, which made the romance more realistic. Though the faith thread wasn't heavy, it held the two main characters together; they were almost complete opposites except for their shared love for God and family.
It was really fun and special to see a Regency house party re-enacted in the 21st century. The pacing of the story lagged a bit in certain places; I know that romantic angst is the crux of all Regency (and Regency-infused) novels but Zoe and Harrison could have ruminated a little less, especially at the retreat. That being said, if you enjoy delicious romcom with a hefty dose of Regency era, you will totally love this book.

This was such a delightful book! I am a huge Jane Austen fan, and I love reading Regency period books. The Rules of Falling For You is set in modern day, but lots of references to Jane Austen’s works and the Regency period. I’m not a huge contemporary fiction rom-com reader, but I do love Jane Austen as well as the long time friends to lovers trope. I thought this would be a fun book to read! I had just finished some heavier books as I am a primarily historical fiction fan, so this was a nice “palate cleanser” of a book that was light-hearted with just the right touch of humor and a little bit of angst. You know that Zoe and Harrison will have their HEA, but how will they get there? I loved Harrison as a swoony MMC. This was a sweet, clean read. As Christian Fiction, it does make references to their faith and God’s sovereignty and goodness, but it does not feel heavy handed. You can make all the lists and plans that you want, but God will give you something far better than you could even ask for. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy Rom-Coms, Regency period and Jane Austen in general, especially if you are also in agreement that the 1995 P&P is the best version! 😉

If you love both regency and contemporary romance... this book is absolutely for you!

But honestly though, even if you're more like me when it comes to regency and could take it or leave it, this one was still really fun... though certainly a bit different than the author's previous books! I loved this idea of using Regency rules for dating in a modern setting. There are several twists throughout the story to keep things interesting, and I found myself curious to see how everything would play out in the end. Harrison and Zoe had a really fun dynamic between them... they were definitely opposites in many ways but they had a really sweet chemistry that I couldn't help but root for. If you're looking for a sweet Christian contemporary romance with plenty of nods to the Regency era, this is one not to be missed.

The Rules of Falling for You by Mollie Rushmeyer delivered entertaining, romcom fun while holding space for serious issues, namely perfectionism and control. Both Harrison and Zoe learned good lessons and challenged each other to embrace growth and change. This budding couple held good chemistry from the start, though it simmered lower during certain times. It was fun to see them grow closer, though the “third-act breakup” was predictable and my least favorite part of the story. Overall, I enjoyed the novel, and I would read other books by the author. Four stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for this audiobook ARC.🫶

Unfortunately, this book did not work for me. The audiobook narration made it especially difficult to engage with, the intonation felt unnatural, with almost every sentence delivered as though it were a question, which became really frustrating. 😵‍💫

The story itself also came across as overly cheesy and cringeworthy at times.😳

On a positive note, I did appreciate the portrayal of friendship and the Regency-era setting.😊

I believe that with the right audience, this book could be much more appreciated. 🫶

This was such a fun story! I enjoyed the setting, the friendships and of course the main characters. One of my favorite tropes is friends to lovers. The faith element was so nice and refreshing! I sometimes feel Contemporary Christian romance goes too light on the faith aspect but Mollie did a great job of incorporating it and helping the MC to reach for God in difficulty. It was also very sweet and not too descriptive when it came to the romance which I appreciated. My only drawback is there was a good amount of miscommunication and a bit disappointed in how it was resolved. But that is such a small detail for a very cute read.

Podcaster Zoe dreams of finding love so she goes to a regency-themed singles retreat in search of it! Zoe was such a fun and quirky character who reminded me a lot of myself in some ways, so I really admired her and enjoyed going through this journey of a story with her.

The best friend’s brother romance aspect was well done and so swoony! I liked the moments where I could find some humor in the cuteness too. The fact that Zoe is 29 going on 30 and searching for her perfect gentleman by this time, made the story such a fun ride. Her and Harrison end up making quite the cute pair!!

The Rules of Falling for You is a delightful debut rom-com from author Mollie Rushmeyer! A captivating modern day romcom with all things Regency! What a creative and original story, told with humor, and honesty. A charming heroine and the absolute BEST hero! I especially loved his anonymous notes to Zoe. Zoe Dufour and her best friend Eden Lundquist have a wildly successful Regency-themed advice column podcast. Eden's brother Harrison reluctantly agrees to accompany them to film their experience at a singles Regency retreat in Stillwater, Minnesota. He thinks the whole idea is ridiculous. Zoe has much in life that is out of her control, she feels that her 'nonnegotiable traits for her ideal gentleman' list will help her choose the ideal person to share her life with, or is it just that it looks good on paper, but not so much in real life? Must she follow her plan? Or can she be open to something else? It was fun to travel this journey with Zoe from the mishaps, to lessons learned, to true love. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Fans of delightful rom coms and Regency themes will love it!

Thank you to the author and Bethany House for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.

“That’s how God so often works, isn’t it? Only the next step, the next shrub or tree, is visible when I want the whole forest. I need the whole picture so I can organize, mitigate disaster, plan for all possible outcomes, ready a list to ensure everything turns out the way it’s supposed to. “

The premise of this book reminded me of Angela Ruth Strong’s book, Husband Auditions, in which a young single influencer decides to film herself following an old-fashioned list for finding a beau. Only instead of list from the 1950s, our heroine in Molly Rushmeyer’s contemporary rom-com uses a list from Regency times. Zoe and her best friend Eden produce a popular podcast. Using wisdom from Regency authors Jane Austin and A. Nathaniel Gladwin, Zoe gives advice bout finding love in the modern world. Love, the “l” word, yet elusive to the two. They decide to attend a Regency cosplay singles retreat near Minneapolis, and drag along Eden’s brother, Harrison, as their producer.

The adventures the two get into along with Harrison, his assistant Jake, and a few other friends and attendees are quite hilarious and sad. Hilarious as Zoe is not very graceful, and that is putting it mildly. Sad, because as the reader, it is so easy to see what Zoe refuses to see… where her true feelings lie, but where she, in her need for a plan, decides to move ahead.

Harrison and Zoe take turns narrating the story, so we get a look at the pitfalls and likelihood of this being a friends-to-more story. Zoe is a planner who must have everything scheduled and perfect. Harrison finally tells her, “Besides, even when we think we’re controlling things, we’re really not. Surrender is acknowledging the fact that God has it under control, has our backs, and loves us. We don’t have to carry the burden of making everything right.” Yet, Zoe desperately clings to her idea of control, sure if she lets go, disaster will ensue.

When Zoe does finally begin to let go and trust God for her future, a sudden betrayal reinforces her misguided idea that she never should have given up the reins. Will she ever be able to understand that “God never promised, ‘Take my yoke upon you, and I’ll make sure your life’s smooth sailing, no pain or heartache’”? I know people who believe if they trust God, bad things shouldn’t happen to them. Will Harrison persist in his pursuit, or will he decide Zoe and he are too different to be God’s match for each other? How will Harrison and Eden’s overbearing, absent father affect the future of the podcast and any relationship between Harrison and Zoe?

While this is a light-hearted story, the lessons about letting go and letting God and relaxing our standards, not looking for perfection in others, are invaluable.

I received a copy of the book from the author and publisher via NetGalley. I also purchased my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“That’s the thing I’ve come to see. I’ll never be perfect, I’ll never do everything right. But then He never asked me to. Instead, He said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”- Harrison

“while people, even people I love deeply, can disappoint and betray me, God never will.”- Zoe

“when we keep secrets from others, we’re telling ourselves it’s for their good. To protect them. To protect our own hearts. But it’s a lie we tell ourselves to avoid doing what’s right.”- Zoe

“Maybe He [God]reveals one step at a time so I have to take His hand for the next one, the one I can’t quite see beyond. That way He can help me when I inevitably stumble or fall.”-Zoe

The Rules of Falling for You is the third book I've read by Mollie Rushmeyer. While it was a completely different type of book, it was still just as great as her previous books. It's said to be a "regency-infused contemporary rom-com" which I found quite intriguing.

Zoe is an almost-thirty-year-old podcaster who is obsessed with the Regency Era. She shares regency inspired relationship advice while searching for love herself. However, because of embarrasing and heartbreaking relationship disasters in her past she has built walls around her heart and has this regency inspired checklist that she is using to try to find just the right guy.

Harrison is Zoe's best friend's brother, who is also like a brother to her, and a friend. Things are a bit awkward between them because of an event in the past, but he is back in town to help with her and his sister Eden with the podcast.

An opportunity comes up for all of them to attend a Regency themed singles retreat. This seems like a great way to boost the podcast while participating in activities to help her find someone who will fit all of the boxes on her list. Though Harrison was not interested in this whole Regency thing, he wanted to be there for the podcast, plus there was the chance for him to advance his career.

I have to say, I loved reading about all the Regency themed activities the characters were participating in. I have an interest in the Regency era; however, I have not read any of the books that are referenced in the story, or watched the movies. So, I sort of know what the stories are about, and could sort of understand some of the referrences, and I will add, this book has really intrigued me and I sort of want to read the classic books to really get to know the characters that are being talked about throughout this book.

So, there were definitely some humorous happenings but there was a lot of serious stuff going on as well. A lot of looking deep within themselves and learning to remember that God is sovereign. This passage is one that really spoke to me as I was reading:

"'If you have everything planned, how is that any fun? Besides, even when we think we're controlling things, we're really not. Surrender is acknowledging the fact that God has it under control, has our backs, and loves us. We don't have to carry the burden of making everything right.'"

As much as I liked Zoe and Harrison and wanted to see them together, I have to say, their relationship got a bit frustrating at times. Especially with the twist toward the end. I'm not going to spoil anything, but with this twist and the characters reactions, I felt it was a bit off from how they had been growing, both in their relationship to each other, and their faith. It was because of this that I took away one star from my rating.

That said, The Rules of Falling for You is a great book with great romance and it definitely had me laughing at times. Definitely recommended.

I received a copy of this book as a member of the launch team and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)
As soon as I heard about this book, I just knew I had to read this one. I mean, it’s a Jane Austen-meets-romcom book, and I’m totally on board. I loved the chemistry between the two main characters, the way that the story unfolded, and a lot of the humorous bits throughout. It was exactly what I was looking for in a new romcom, and such a fun ARC to read.
First, let me start off by saying that these characters were fun. Our main girl runs a podcast (and I was totally interested in listening to it, by the way), which I just thought was a unique profession to see a main character with, especially in a book involving the regency era. But, this character really worked well with that situation, and I was very excited to hear about the ins and outs of that career. Also, I loved how awkward and clumsy she was at times, and the diabetic representation!!!
(I will say that as someone who knows type one diabetics, there is no CGM that can share the blood glucose reading with a phone that’s far away. If anyone knows of one, that’s amazing, and I can’t wait to hear more about it. However, I’ve never run across anything like that before. And, also, this girl needs an insulin pump ASAP.)
Our main guy reminded me a little of Luke from Loyally Luke by Pepper Basham (which is a huge compliment, let me say). He was fun, and I liked getting to see his POV. It added a very romcom feel versus the regency aesthetics, and I appreciated that. And, let me just say that the fact he was so supportive of her, even when he thought her ideas were ridiculous… that was a very refreshing green flag.
The romance and kisses got a little much for me– although I was listening to the audiobook, so maybe I would usually just skim it slightly, so it wasn’t actually that much stronger, I don’t know– but it was still very sweet, clean, and wholesome. I was practically fuming when we reached certain parts at the last ten percent of the book… it was almost too much for me to continue through without skipping to the end to find out exactly how long it would take for our main characters to get their acts together.
There were certain characters I couldn’t stand (don’t worry, we were supposed to dislike them), and others I would love to see future books about *ahem Jake and Eden ahem*, which was especially fun to see. I really enjoyed trying out this book by an author, and I can’t wait to see what she writes next. Honestly, this book felt like watching a regency romcom, and I just loved that aesthetic combined with modern social settings to get that sort of perfect balance. I would definitely recommend this to any woman who loves Jane Austen and all things regency. It was such a fun time, and I definitely do not think you will be sorry you gave it a try. A new favorite of this year or me, personally.
(Note: I listened to the audiobook, and it was fine. I didn’t love one of the narrators, but once I got into it, I didn’t find myself getting annoyed, or anything. Definitely check it out if you’re an audiobook reader.)

What a deeeeelightful read! Who knew Mollie Rushmeyer could write rom/coms? I wasn’t sure what to expect, being familiar with her first two deeply thought provoking and emotional novels,’The Bookshop of Secrets’ and ‘The Lost Manuscript.’ I couldn’t quite wrap my head around the same author infusing this much humour into her storytelling but, woohoo, comic genius for the win!

The setting is brilliant! Our heroine is a crazed Austen/Regency era mega-fan who has made it her life’s work to infuse the genteel courting rituals of the era into a wildly popular podcast. She spins Regency etiquette and traditions into expectations for potential suitors for the modern woman.

And when Zoe is invited to participate – and record – her experiences at a Regency themed singles retreat, complete with costumes and chaperones (!) well, that’s when the fun really begins. Because her new podcast producer just happens to be a man she has a very complicated history with. Best friend’s brother. Once-upon-a-time good friend. Witness to her most embarrassing moment. Possible secret crush. And the man she has been studiously avoiding for the past eighteen months.

Harrison and Zoe are thrown into the whirlwind activity of a 21st century Minnesota Marriage Mart. Courting with Regency rules of engagement. While in period dress. What could possibly go wrong?! If you’re Zoe, quite a lot actually.

The comedy is priceless. The romance, exquisitely torturous because of the pacing – we wait a loooonnnnggg time for Harrison and Zoe to ‘fess up to their feelings. Lots of agonizing inner battles to not feel the attraction and nefarious suitors to thwart. But, oh my, when Harrison finally makes his declaration and takes the pursuit of love seriously…well, clear off the fainting couch and prepare for a swooning marathon.

And our stubborn heroine? She’s so married to her impossible checklist in her search of the perfect ‘gentleman’, that she’s at risk of ignoring the perfect ‘gentle man’ who has been at her side all along. Sniffle sigh!

A modern day Regency Romance that made me laugh and swoon!

I listened to the audio edition of this novel and Emma Faye and Kyle Tait’s flawless narration elevated my enjoyment of this story so much. They really captured the characters’ personalities and the comedic beats brilliantly. Made this a listening experience to savour.

My thanks to RB Media and Net Galley for providing me with an audio edition of this book.
