Summertime in Southern Alabama is the best thing that happened for Matt Foster and the worst for Laila Wright.
After seven years away, Laila is coming home to Alabama to get some much needed R&R from the stress of being a Senator’s assistant in the nation’s capital. Laila plans to use her time off to reset and think about her next move. What Laila doesn’t expect is to run into her former childhood best friend, Matt Foster – he was in fact the first boy to break her heart.
Matt is determined to show Laila that the version of him that she holds in her heart doesn’t exist anymore and he’s turned a new leaf in life. Matt is all in for Laila and is willing to do whatever it takes to show her.

ARC REVIEW 💚 Title : The Playboy's Playbook Author : @authorleximonroe Star Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Currently Playing : “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran 🎧
When I tell you this book is the definition of the song “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, I mean it. “We were just kids when we fell in love”. Yes, that's it. THAT IS IT. The Playboy's Playbook is a swoon worthy romance which will give a all the feels! Matt used to be bestfriends with Laila in second grade, they had promised to never leave eachother but the sections got changed and well.. the promise was broken. But this was not the worst part, the worst part was that Matt had turned into a Playboy later.. well? If I were Laila, I would be heartbroken to see my crush aka bestfriend turn into a Playboy too. Sad to say, the connection was lost. BUT THEN They met. AGAIN. YEARS LATER. (I won't spoil the whole story for you) But when I tell you the “meet-cute” it was, you'll be smiling like CRAZYYYYY. The way Lexi has written the book, it's just chef's kiss. Matt's words just touch the heart and pull the exact right strings and I can't fall for him more (yes Laila yes, it's us) Laila is strong, she's my pretty pretty girl and I adored her! I LOVED the fact that side characters were not just any side characters, they were written with so much love and I couldn't stop myself from loving them all. This book is cute and fun read and I totally recommend reading it if you love smiling till your cheeks hurt!! 💚 Thank you so much @authorleximonroe and @beyondthebookspr for the ARC!! 💚
*ARC Reviewer* Matty and Laila are the cutest! The Playboy’s Playbook is a really cute and sweet story. It’s a second chance redemption story that is well written with amazing characters. I love that are main characters are relatable and flawed and sometimes sabotage themselves with their own self-doubt. I would definitely recommend this book.
First of all, a big thank you to Lexi for kindly sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
To be completely honest, I wasn’t too sure about the plot at first it felt a little rushed and slightly all over the place in the beginning. That said, I really enjoyed the characters, especially Nala 🐶 such a standout!
While it wasn’t a book that had me hooked from start to finish, and I did find myself putting it down a few times, there were still some sweet and enjoyable moments throughout.
Let me know if you want it to sound more casual, more detailed, or if you’d like to add a star rating!
The Playboy’s Playbook is the kind of heartfelt small-town romance that wraps around you like a warm Southern breeze. Set in the lazy heat of Southern Alabama, this story brings together everything I love in a feel-good romance — childhood friends-to-lovers, found family, and a reformed playboy who's all in for love.
After seven years in D.C. as a high-powered assistant to a senator, Laila Wright returns home for a well-earned break, hoping for peace and perspective. What she doesn’t plan on is coming face-to-face with Matt Foster, the boy who once broke her heart. But Matt isn’t that heartbreaker anymore. Now, he’s a man determined to make amends, prove he’s changed, and maybe even win back the girl he let go.
Matt's redemption arc is beautifully handled — he’s sincere, steady, and clearly still head-over-heels for Laila. Their chemistry is off-the-charts, full of tender moments, flirty banter, and emotional depth that had me rooting for them from the start. I especially loved Laila’s dog, Nola — absolutely adorable and added such charm to every scene she was in. Luke’s kids, Clay and Jen, were also standouts — cute, believable, and never overly sugary. Luke himself shines as a supportive older brother figure to Matt, offering just the right touch of wisdom and humor.
The pacing is perfect, and the Southern setting feels vivid without being overdone. The themes of healing, second chances, and finding where you truly belong are handled with warmth and heart. If you’re a fan of small-town romances with emotional depth, lovable side characters, and second-chance love done right, this book will absolutely steal your heart. I didn’t want it to end.
This book was such a beautiful read! Matt and Laila’s story was really nice and I found myself hooked from the beginning. I loved that it was a play on playbooks but not actually a sports romance. It was just super cute. My favorite character is Luke for sure. He made me laugh and he is such a good dad. I also felt like his wisdom is what got Matt through things. His kids are adorable and the found family aspect of this story is rooted in them and Nola (the best doggo ever)
The story itself was definitely full of a lot of of love, but also heartbreak. I found that the characters really grew together, and learn to love each other. I think that’s what made the story really beautiful in the end. I definitely think Laila character is important because she embodies a lot of fears, and also a lot of hopes that people sometimes have with love. I also think Matt’s character also is similar in the sense of not feeling love because of your past mistakes.
I think all of us could use a story like this in which we learned to fight for the ones we love, even in times when we’re unsure if we deserve their love in the first place. I think the author did a really good job of making that theme prevalent throughout the story.
The drama is definitely there which made the stakes much higher. I found myself rooting for them so much.
Thank you again Lexi for this read and thank you Beyond Books PR for letting me be apart of the team
What happened here? Lexi Monroe’s romance book—with its adorable cover and themes of childhood best friends becoming lovers—had my heart levels rising everywhere. It was all good, though! I love wrecking my heart!
Laila returns to her hometown and runs into her former best friend Matt—former because of something that went down back in the day between the two. Matt, though, wants to prove to Laila that he is not the same guy from back then, and he has romantic feelings for her. But Matt has a past that he’s not ready to share yet. And secrets always have a way of coming out unexpectedly.
As I mentioned earlier, I wasn’t prepared for the story's emotional aspects. I liked Matt’s relationship with his sister and Luke. The scene with his mother was quite touching. Matt struggles with how his mistakes impact everyone around him. There are time jumps, which I liked. Too often in romance stories, love happens in a short amount of time, then the breakup, and then everything is fine. However, as it should, healing takes time in Lexi Monroe’s book.
Though the spice was relatively low, I still enjoyed the story, and I do hope Luke gets his own book!
Laila: assistant for a congresswoman; home for the summer; falling for her childhood best friend turned stranger Matt: construction worker; recovering alcohol; trying to with the heart of the first and only girl he’s ever loved
I loved this book! I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish this book. I loved every second of it. I expected a full football romance and it was the opposite.
Matt was obsessed with my girl Laila from the moment he saw her again. Laila wasn’t his biggest fan. Matt is trying to be a better person than he was 5 yrs ago. But all Laila remembers is Matt from high school.
Matt was able to break down all of Laila’s walls and become the love of her life. Laila was the love of Matt’s life since elementary school. They were so good together. Everything felt so nature and organic. Nothing was forced.
There is a 3rd act break up. I’m not a fan of a 3rd act break up but this one was good. It was needed for both of them. Matt needed it to get the end of his recovery. Laila needed it because it showed her love and lost. Is the love for someone worth forgiving or letting it all go. I loved the way it was written.
Although I didn't love it this was still a cute read so rounded it to a 3.
It felt a little disjointed in my opinion. Matt and Laila were best friends in elementary school, then the next year they didn't have the same class together so they stopped being best friends. So naturally Laila hated him because he got new friends and ended up being a playboy. She leaves her small town and starts working in politics in DC, but comes back to take care of her moms house. Matt sees her at the rodeo and they reconnect, but she doesn't like him. He falls for her instantly and takes time to get to know her. They get together - he takes her virginity because she was still saving it for him - even though she hated him? - then she finds out something from his past and they aren't together anymore. You get a year of them apart and then them reconnecting. It was a lot of miscommunication in my opinion and just didn't work well for me. His best friend Luke was great and I love his boys and I really hope the next book is his because I love a good single dad romance. He also calls her baby way too much and I just didn't like it.
Honestly it's a cute closed door, small town romance, just missed the mark for me! Others might enjoy it!

When a trip back home brings together two childhood best friends. Matt, once a playboy got into trouble a few years. Lexi comes home for the first time since high school for the summer to house sit for her mom. Matthew decides he wants to catch up with Lexi since he ran into her, and get to know her again. This book has that small town feel and a small dog which for me is always a win. This book went at the right speed, not too fast, and not to slow. You do have a flashbacks to when they were friends, which gives the idea of what changed their friendship. This book was a super cute read. You find this book now on Kindle Unlimited. Can’t wait to read Lexi’s next book.
Thank you Lexi Monroe + Beyond The Books PR for my copy of The Playboy’s Playbook. 🤍 I received this book for review, all opinions are my own and given freely.
This was an easy, cute, second chance romance. Matt + Laila were childhood best friends until they were put in different classes in second grade. Time and distance leaves them all but strangers and then Matt turns into a playboy as they get older, much to Laila’s displeasure because she always harbored a crush on him. Now years later, Matt has a chance at redeeming himself and he’s got his heart set on winning over Laila.
What a sweet and cozy romance. First off, our fmc Laila is a hardworker working for the congresswoman , pushing through her own fears & emotions, hopeful for so much more. On to our mmc Matt he is such an emotional, and strong character, he has emotions of not feeling enough to be loved or to accept love from past mistakes/issues. Matt, our construction man, who is in recovery from alcohol, and his heart is wanting to win over the love of our fmc Laila. Now to the romance/ rekindling of Laila and Matt was such an emotional, whirlwind and progressive dynamic. Prior and after falling in love both the characters had to grow and heal not only for themselves but within their growth of a romantic relationship, not only did they grow together and separately but they were able to be vulnerable and emotionally there for each other. Their romance healed and allowed the acceptance of love and receiving that love even when you feel like it's unavoidable in your life but their relationship proved their fears wrong. Each and every page was full of emotions from heartbreak, happiness, acceptance, support and love. The friendship that both our fmc and mmc had is what made them stronger and pushed through drama and any force that came at them. This story from the romance, friendship aspect was such a healing story that provided characters, and the plot of accepting love even when you feel like you aren't worthy enough or when your fears and side problems try to interfere you have to still push through and accept goodness that is received. 🏷️ This story, the characters and the writing plot allowed such vulnerable emotions and acceptance of love and happiness. I recommend everyone to read, this was such a good novel!

This was such a cute read! Matty and Laila’s story was definitely filled with many up and down moments, but in those up moments it had me smiling and giggling! Did I feel frustrated at Matt for not telling Laila everything from the beginning… yes! Did I get frustrated at Laila for then not hearing him out completely before pushing him away… yes! But we got the HEA we all knew was coming in the end! And we have to give a special mention to Nola… the cutest puppy! This is Lexi’s debut novel and I’m so glad I had the chance to arc read it!
This was cute! I loved the tropes in this one- small town, childhood besties, and SLOW BURN! This was so easy to get through because it was just adorable!
I loved Matt so much! You can tell that man was written by a woman!!! I love a good golden retriever man! I also loved how strong of a FMC Laila was! And their meet cute was just PRECIOUS!!!! I won’t spoil anything but it was so cute! I also just am a sucker for childhood friends to lovers! You could really feel them falling back in love from childhood!!! Such a cute read!
3.75. A sweet, second-chance romance with small-town vibes and emotional depth. Matt and Laila’s childhood friends to strangers to lovers story was tender and full of growth. Loved the character development and how the third-act breakup actually felt necessary. A solid, heartfelt read with a little more weight than I expected, felt rushed at points but still a good read. Thank you for the arc!
