Finding Laila

Rate this book
Joey, Cole, Haden and Braxton have been a constant in my life since I was five, and I have loved being one of the guys.

I've been cheerleader.

I've been study partner.

I've been listener.

When we're young, we don't realize the profound impact certain people will have on our lives. I had no idea twelve years ago I'd meet four boys who would turn out to be my best friends, my soul mates - my barmy.

Now school is almost done, our last summer together is drawing closer, and I'm trying to hold on to what we have while I still can. After this, we'll have to say goodbye to each other as our choices will take our lives in different directions. But I don't know if our friendship can survive once secrets and surprises begin revealing themselves to us at every turn.

When it's all said and done, will our friendships remain unbreakable? Or will our once strong bond prove to be weaker than we anticipated?

Letting go is harder than I though, but some changes are necessary.

And finding Laila...finding myself...may be the greatest journey of all.

I came across Finding Laila by chance on my Facebook newsfeed and it sounded good so I figured I'd buy it and give it a chance. I'm so happy that I did because Finding Laila is an absolutely incredible coming-of-age novel that I truly enjoyed. In fact, I stayed up till 1am reading this. Logically, I should have gone to bed hours before I did due to the fact I had to get up at 6am this morning but that was impossible because I just couldn't put this book down till I finished. I may be completely exhausted right now and at the same time experiencing a book hangover, but I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever.

What I love about this book?
1) Laila's Barmy consisting of Braxton, Cole, Haden, and Joey. All the guys are absolutely amazing and I love how they're all truly there for one another. Laila and her Barmy are the definition of what true friendship is all about.

2) The roller coaster ride of emotions I went through while reading. I smiled, laughed, cried my eyes out, and got pissed off. I admit I loved every minute of it.

3) The romance. I'm not going to say the guy that Laila falls in love with because that would ruin everything. However, I will say that the romance between the two is absolutely phenomenal and that I ship them beyond all means. They are the epitome of relationship goals and I truly hope that one day I find the man who will be the love of my life.

4) It's unpredictable. I had assumptions of how the book would go and it was absolutely nothing like I predicted. There were twists and turns all throughout the story that jolted me out of my seat. In fact, at one point I legitimately dropped my kindle on the ground due to me being completely shocked. Luckily, my kindle is okay though.

Overall, I loved this book and I highly recommend reading it.

“Haden, you’re gay,” I inform him as if he doesn’t already know this.

This will (hopefully) be a short review. Mainly because it's been a while since I read the book and want to get this review over with, but also because there's only a few things I have to say about it. First up, Finding Laila is about Laila and her four best (male) friends, and their last year in high school. That's where the plot begins and ends.

There's not much to say about the main character, Laila. She's your typical snowflake YA heroine.
“Yeah, you’re a girl. But you aren’t like other girls.”

"You’re intimidating as hell! You do realize you’re pretty much the perfect girl, right?”

"While all the other girls around are clawing and beating each other to be noticed, you are happy to stay in the background away from the spotlight—unseen."

Laila is being bullied (more or less) for the fact that her four best friends are all male, so of course the other girls are jealous and calls her a slut. Which is not okay, slutshaming is never okay. Perhaps this fact would've made it possible to feel some sympathy for Laila, but that feeling is quickly reduced by Laila's obnoxious, dramatic, and rude behavior. On top of it all, she has no respect for authorities (okay, she has almost no respect for anyone that isn't her four best friends - even her family doesn't get much respect). Laila was such an annoying character, and she had the ability to make everything about her and blowing literally everything out of proportions.

Laila more or less would've ruined this book all on her own, but as it is, I had a few more things that bothered me. First off is the fact that everything we learn about these characters, we are told. For example, one of Laila's best friends are supposedly "brooding". Fun thing, he never once acts this way. So yes, everything we learn is told, never shown, and this is a big problem when it comes to my next issue: Laila's best friends never came off the paper as actual people, instead they appear to be there to fill a quota. We have the (supposedly, as mentioned) brooding artist. Then we have the carefree, smart friend that Laila talks to more than the rest. Then we have the guy who's girl crazy. Last but not least we have, and this one bothered me most, the popular jock with girls chasing him, but he's actually gay.

I'll talk a little about the last character because his sexual orientation isn't brought up until the middle of the book. First of all, because of all the telling, no showing, he doesn't get to be a rounded character (this is an issue for all the characters, of course). In fact, he falls into the background with a few lines here and there. Then his sexual orientation is brought up, and suddenly he is important again. This is troublesome, because while it's great authors are including minorities these days, but when they're doing it to simply "fill a quota", it is not genuine, it is not representation. Most of all, it seems that his sexual orientation is what makes him interesting, or that this fact is what his identity is all about. And yes, your sexual identity is a part of your identity, but it isn't the only defining you. The way the book is written (all telling, no showing) then seems to focus more on his particular sexual orientation, rather than his persona.

Basically, it all comes down to the fact that there is no showing, only telling. Emotional connection to the characters are nearly impossible when there's nothing backing up the statements about their personalities (or in some cases, direct contradictions). Without rounded characters the lack of solid plot is evident; had there been more complex characters with interesting arcs, it could've been better.

I didn't know what to expect going into this book. This is the first time that I've read a book by this author. And I must say... This book was so good and took me by surprise.
It had me from the very first page. And... I seriously couldn't put this book down!

This book is a great coming of age book.
Five friends growing up and experiencing all that life has to throw at them. When your at that age when every problem comes your way just seems to be so BIG.

They all grew up together.... But.... They were all so very different as were all their problems.
But the advantage that these kids had and not a lot of other kids have. This group of friends all had each other to lean on. They didn't have to go into all these experiences alone.

Joey, Cole, Haden and Braxton and Laila all met at a very young age. They all manage to stay best friends... Even though they are all so different.
I felt Laila was sort of their rock in the group. All the guys her "best friends" watched out for her... As she did for them.
No matter what was going on... They had each other's back. And I loved that about them.

I felt Laila and Haden had Braxton had more on there plate then Joey and cole.
Laila finds out something on her 18th birthday that rocks her world. Haden had to deal with the fall back of his fathers passing and Braxton is keeping a secret that he feels he had to keep hidden. I loved how all these problems get dealt with. One by one... the group is there for each other and they deal with it head on.

The ending...
I'm really at a loss for words with the ending.
The ending totally caught me off guard.
I felt like I grew up with these people. I felt the connection they all had with one another. So when the ending came... I was blown away.

All I can say about this book is... This is the best YA book I've read in a while. It has everything. I laughed... I cried (well... I ugly cried!!) I was happy for them and sad for them in certain parts in the book.
And that right there is a great book... If an author can evoke all those emotions in you all in one book.
It was extremely well written. It flowed perfectly. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

Would I read more books by this author... Yes I would.
Would I recommend this book to people... Yes I would

Five Heart Felt Stars!

I have been a lover of YA for many many years. Finding Laila is extremely well written and I found myself taken back to those younger years of self discovery.

Author TK Rapp has given us a wonderfully executed and heart tugging story. Each of these characters in one way or another will remind you of yourself growing up. Laila, Braxton, Joey, Cole and Hayden are the best of friends that lean on each other though the good and the bad. (We all had one or two of those.)

This story pulled out so many different emotions that one minute I was laughing and the next I was crying. It takes a great author to do that!

Be warned though that the ending blew me away and I will not forget this story any time soon!

If you have not read YA for one reason or another I highly suggest trying Finding Laila by author TK Rapp! Trust me when I say you will not be disappointed!

A coming of age story about a girl named Laila finding her place in the world, a world that won’t accept her. But with the help of her 4 best friends Cole, Haden, Braxton and Cole she finds herself and her surroundings as good as it could be.

Laila met her best friends when she was only 5 years old. When she first moved into the neighborhood, she was welcomed into the group on that same day while playing. They became fast friends, but she stayed especially close to Joey. All 5 of them were inseparable from that day on.

Then fast forward to High School..
Laila became the center of rumors and jokes, a slut was what she was called the most. Being friends with four gorgeous guys, made girls jealous of her, which were how rumors got started. But Laila was strong and had no problem putting anyone in their place. When she feels the need to say what she wants, she does it with no fear. And what’s great is that the guys always had her back no matter what.

 photo FindingLaila-Teaser.jpg

Yes this story was a little slow and very clean, but I enjoyed reading the interactions between the group of friends. I would’ve love having friends like the boys. They were the best and they cared for Laila and each other always.

The story was going great until the end. Laila had somewhat got her happy ending, but she also had to go through a tragedy. A tragedy that was useless in my opinion. It’s one of those where you stop and ask yourself “WTF just happened?” That was not needed. The ending almost brought me to tears, but I was more mad with the way it ended, that the tears didn’t come.

So my question to the author is, WHY? Why did you do it. I loved him.

That kind of ending didn’t have to happen for Laila to find herself, she already did that. With the help of her friends Laila found herself a long time ago.

So again Why? I am heartbroken.

Laila and her boys (and eventual girls) are awesome. This is a nice, clean story about lifelong friendships and true love... in different facets. There were some definite surprises that I didn't anticipate, so it wasn't predictable at all.

My favorite of her "barmy" was Haden (because Nate, duh), with Braxton as a close second. I just feel like I knew more about these two than Cole and Joey... but I'm super intrigued by Cole's choice for college, and what kind of man he'll become.

I will say... I wish there had been just an eensy bit more 'romance' between Laila and her beau... don't get me wrong, he was sweet and romantic, but there was no hint of - ahem- desires in this book (with four teenage boys as central characters). And I have no doubt it's intentional and will be perfect for its audience. I'm just saying I (selfish me) wanted a little passion. To please my romantic sensibilities, though, there were a ton of sweet kisses on cheeks, foreheads and on the top of her head... and a few on the lips that made Laila weak in the knees. I adored her boyfriend.

What I really like is that I finally have a go-to book that I can recommend when someone asks if I know of a book their daughter could read, or if a reader wants something that's not all heaving bosoms and throbbing members. Absolutely this is that book. They could and should read Finding Laila. It's sweet and thoughtful, and what girl doesn't want four guys who are always there for her, if needed? Not that Laila's needy, she's not. If anything, the boys are overprotective, and that's nice. Laila is strong-willed and independent and she can hang with the boys without giving up any part of who she is. I like that about her.

Finding Laila was a nice introduction to author TK Rapp. I'll definitely read more! 4.5 stars

I am not the biggest straight up YA reader but I like to take a chance sometimes. I saw this cute cover and the vision the blurb created struck me.

Finding Laila started off really strong and I was loving word for word and scene to scene. I loved all her connection to the boys. I enjoyed their banter and jokes and how each one meant something different to her.

If you need a YA or a book period with a strong romance connection and some steam, this won't make you happy. I didn't miss the lack of steam bc the relationship you do get, there is enough sweet and awe type love pouring through the pages. I do wish there was a little more leading up to the romance part instead of jumping straight in. Maybe some subtle hints. Something.

This was a group book, not putting heavy emphasis on one couple. For the most part I was OK with that. I can see why the Epilogue was told the way it was because it did stay true to the way the book was told but for me, although, it took me by surprise it saddened me. I think you get the shock part but was it really needed? Maybe in the story, but in the epi? And then to have the story stop there. I didn't see any mentioning of another book so I only judging on this book and for this book? I do not feel complete. The box is still very open and there is still space left to finish this story. I want to know what happens.

But hey, just my 2 cents on my feeling after finishing it. A true hardcore YA fan might fall desperately in love with Finding Laila.

To be honest, I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this book. I'm writing this shortly after finishing and the only thing I can think right now is "WHAT. THE. HELL. IS. THAT. EPILOGUE????" No spoilers, other than to warn you...it's brutal.

On to the rest of the book.

I think the thing that disappoints me is that this really had all the makings of a 5 star book, but fell short in several areas. For those going into the book thinking it's about her finding a boy, it's not. Laila's love life takes up only a small section of the book, although that's not what prompted me to give it 4 stars instead of 5. The loss of the star has all to do with the lack of development. The characters, and Laila especially, spend all their time talking, but Rapp doesn't take the time to flesh anything out. Even when Laila is upset about things, she's just talking, and it always feels like the reader is left on the outside wondering what is going on, rather than in Laila's head, which is technically where you since the book is in first person. The whole time I was reading I just kept wanting MORE. More development, more clues into the characters feelings, more idea of what they were doing, more depth. I love the idea of Laila and her 4 boy best friends, but everything just felt 2 dimensional. I wanted to get to know these guys better. And another thing I wanted more of was conflict. The conflict/resolution in each chapter happened really quickly. I understand that Rapp is trying to get through a whole school year, but as quick as the read was (I finished in under 24 ours) she definitely had time to flesh more things out. But as much as I'm tearing it apart, and as much as that epilogue makes me want to shake my fist at the world, I did enjoy the story. It was a coming of age novel that at the end of the day really moved me.

This is an amazing coming of age story with great emphasis on friendship and family. While there is a hint of romance within the story, I'm not sure I would label it as a YA romance, if that's what you are looking for. This book is so much more than the story of a boy and a girl falling in love. It's about a group of friends finding the true meaning of love within the boundaries of friendship and through that love, navigating their way through high school on their way to adulthood.
Every single character in this book is unique and awesome in their own right, but the sum of their personalities combined is what makes the story truly remarkable. If I had a group of friends as loyal as Laila and her barmy, I probably would have enjoyed high school a LOT more.
This is the type of book I'll eagerly hand over to my teenage daughter to read. It's a clean, age appropriate for the YA genre, which seems to be harder to find lately. It's also very well written and will pull your heartstrings from beginning to end.

I don't normally consider myself a fan of YA books, but lately a couple of authors have changed that for me. TK Rapp is one of those authors. Finding Laila has a fresh premise with a grounded female lead who is supported by friends and family that love and respect her. While she faces challenges in discovering who she really is, she finds inner strength and pulls strength from those who surround her as she transitions to womanhood.

This beautifully crafted story is one that will stay with me for a long time and will bring smiles and tears when I reflect back on it. The friendships forged by Laila and her "Barmy" challenge societal thinking about male/female relationships.

I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to read Finding Laila as it was being written and love the fact that it can be enjoyed by adults and young people too. I would have no qualms about letting my 14 year old son read the story based on its content. This was a 5 star read for me!

Received a complimentary copy for an honest review. This book had me hooked when I found out it was about a girl growing up with 4 boys. Since that's how I grew up.(but mine were related 3 cousins & 1 brother) So I knew I had to read this story. There was so much emotion throughout this book. Friendship, laughter, peer pressure, bullying, strength, courage, support, family, love and loss. I loved how Laila is such a tom boy and is most comfortable in her skin that way, as that's how I grew up too, with my 4 guys. You just need to read this story all the way through the epilogue. I would love to have more books in this series, just to see where life has taken the main characters. And I know their friendship will last, because they all just get each other and have that same devotion to each other.

Wow...I don't even know what to rate this book. I know there were complaints about the abrupt ending so I went in with low expectations. But I seriously feel indifferent to the book. I did like Laila and her barmy, but it left me wanting more overall. Maybe it was the lack of development in some of the characters. Although it could be due to the way the story was told, I imagine the author intended for the narrator to talk about only specific things to point the reader to a general direction or feeling. I strangely appreciated some of the major plot points, and don't know why this book didn't move me more.

I struggled with this review. It’s true. I am not sure how to even begin a review for one of the most touching and beautiful books I have read in a long time. This book shook me to the core. It reminded me of all the amazing people from my past that I was lucky enough to call friends. It reminded me of my best friend, who to this date, is still one of the most amazing men I will ever know. It reminded me of simpler times and times when you kept those who were your friends closest. It reminded me so much of the love I had for all those boys in my neighborhood since I was one of two girls in a six year age group.

Laila has her best friends, but she is unique in her selection. These four guys were the first people she met when she moved to town. The took her in, held her close and were her everything. Each of the unique and amazing in their own way. She may have had crushes on them all at one point or another, but she has always remained faithful to each one of them. Seeming to carry the weight of their friendships on her back, she made it through every day of school knowing that in the end she always had the amazing four men standing by her, no matter what anyone else said.

Joey Parker the third was her confidant. He knew everything there was to know about Laila. He was her go to. Braxton is the star football player that every girl wants a piece of but hiding behind that very athletic exterior is a deep secret. Cole is the smartassy friend that you just can’t help but love. Haden is the romantic artist. Though is friends seldom see that side of him, they know he is extremely talented and has a heart of gold. These four guys make up Laila’s core. They are her go to. No matter how busy things get in their lives, they are always going to have time for one another, spending time at the quarry or hanging out at Braxton’s games, these five share the most incredible friendship and nothing will come between them.

But times are changing. They are in their final year of school. They are all going to go different directions in life, but they are all discovering who they are meant to be and in some cases, who they are meant to be with. Making the decision of what to do next is one of the hardest things they will have to do at their age, saying goodbye, the second.

So may unexpected changes happen in Laila’s life in this last year of high school. An age old pact, broken. A heart found. Identities revealed and love won. What an amazing year I spent with these five in the pages of Finding Laila.

This book touched on so much and I am not going to give any of it away except to say the art show stole my breath and the final goodbye broke my heart. This was one of the most moving stories about the ending of an era, finding your future and making something great out of it. With an amazing support system by your side, you can have it all, do it all and never worry about what will happen next.

T.K. Rapp, your writing in this book is exceptional and it captured and stole my heart. It was so moved and touched by this book and it will be going on my favorite list. A reminder of everything that was great (and everything that sucked) about those high school days, this book is something special and this group of friends, I love them all.

This is a must read and I know I will be re-reading it time and time again. A reminder of the past, hope for the future, faith in friendship. I love this book!

Wow, what can I say to make y'all buy TK Rapp's book?

First off, I'm not going to giveaway anything about the book away, all I'm going to do is explain how Finding Laila made me feel.

I know the exact moment I was going to love this book, and that was at 2%. It was a magnificent read! I would would catch myself reminiscing about my own high school experience, and every emotion I had was bitter sweet. Laila was the type of character I would have loved being friends with in high school, and let's say there was a few parts I was jealous at her because of the friendship she had with Joey, Cole, Haden, and Braxon. Lol

Author TK Rapp made me feel like one of the guys, reminded me about young love, true friendships, and heartache. You can't help but get sucked into the story and want to be part of it. Once you read Finding Laila you will fall in love with it, there is no doubt that you will!

My feeling were all over the place.
I was happy, excited, nervous, upset, sad, and devastated. Oh boy, when I say devastated I mean bawling my eyes out and having my hubby bring me comfort food while blowing my nose and not wanting to leave my bed. I highly recommend y'all having tissue on hand.

Would I read this book all over again? Yes, I most definitely would!

Did Author TK Rapp catch me by surprise? Yes, she did!

This book is a MAGNIFICENT READ!!!

WOW!!!!

I can't put into words how amazing and emotional this book was. I have been a fan of this author from the beginning and she did not disappoint with this one!

Laila has been best friends with Joey (her favorite best friend), Cole, Hayden and Braxton since she was 5 years old. They are her "Barmy"..They have been there for each other through the years and here we have them in their senior year of high school preparing for their last summer together before everything changes.

Things are revealed about Laila, Braxton and Hayden and I LOVE how when it all went down, they were all there for each other. (Especially Braxton) I was so happy none of them treated him differently. She deals with all the rumors and hate towards her from the girls in school and she proves just how strong she is. They way her boys have her back is amazing. We are introduced to some new people who become apart of their crew who were cool too. I will say that I loved the prom they had together :) Hayden and his art? amazing..and the fact that everyone knew was cute. Joey's speech at graduation summed it all up :) loved him!

Everyone prepares to start a new chapter in their lives and the epilogue? Did not see that coming and I am still trying to get over over it. Have your tissues ready for that one!! I will forever be a "Barmy" fan for life! Amazing read!

Finding Laila was a sweet story of a teenage girl finding herself. Laila is a strong, independent young woman who has four boys as her best friends. They have been best friends for twelve years, since Laila moved to town at 5 years old. They are a group of misfits, but that is what makes them work – they are her barmy.

The story follows the five friends through their senior year of high school and all the changes that come with it, as well as some flashbacks from the past. It was heartwarming, funny, and at times sad. It really brought you back to your younger years, remembering how important trivial things were back then. It is a great young adult, coming of age story!

I really enjoyed this story! I loved seeing the different facets of Laila’s friendships with each of the boys as well as what they each were to her. I adored her relationship with Haden and the signs of an all-consuming love.

“I know that for as long as I live, there’s no way I will ever see anyone else the way I see you.”

I also loved the family aspects throughout the story. My only complaint was the epilogue. I’m not sure that it was necessary, but I can kinda see why the author put it in there ~ Tiffany, 3.5 stars

Finding Laila is one of the best YA books I've read!

Rapp has brought back all the feels I had in high school, from first love to uncertainty of my future, all of it is wrapped up in this adorable story.

Laila isn't too popular at school, but she tries not to let it bother her because she's got four boys that she's been friends with that keep her strong. Together these boys make up her barmy.

It's a story of those last few months in high school, and how even though you know everything is about to change, you never know which path you're supposed to choose.

Some changes are necessary, whether they're good or bad. And I loved taking the rocky ride with a quirky character like Laila.

Five enormous stars for this novel!

This is the second book of T.K. Rapp, I've read. Although I loved them both, this book was... Just perfect!! I so wasnt expecting this one to turn out to be this good. It was amazing, YA and not a story you can guess what happens next! It teaches you how true friendships should be. Also, it was like a true story, because it wasnt all rainbows and unicorns. All characters had their ups and downs. And the ending... It just broke my heart! ;(...but it's life right. Its highly recommended!!!

3.5 stars. This is a great coming of age story, and I feel lucky to have been given an ARC. Laila is strong character, her #barmy are a great bunch of boys, and she develops strong relationships. Of course, there are a few side villains; but otherwise, every main character is likeable.

3.5 stars. Friends forever even if one is a girl, that’s what Laila, Joey, Haden, Braxton and Cole are to each other. Until one day, one of them confesses he’s in love with Laila.

Just when I think I know where the story was heading, the author threw curve balls and bombshells.

Although the story touched on bullying, homosexuality, alcoholism, and teen angst about college, the romance was surprisingly wholesome.

The epilogue was very unexpected and I’m curious as to why the author chose that path for one of my favorite characters.

5 amazing, BFF stars!!!!

*****************************************************************
Finding Laila is a poignant and gripping coming-of-age story through the last year of this tight knit group : Laila, Haden, Joey, Braxton, Cole, best friends since they were 5 years old. But now it’s the last year before each of them will take different paths in their lives.
They reached a turning point. Some changes are necessary.

Laila is a teen full of life, never taking shit about gossips about her and her incredible, profound friendship she has and will always have with these four guys. This girl rocks and can manage herself.
It wasn’t easy for her to be friends with girls because they were jealous of her and didn’t understand her friendship with them. She handled the situation very well, she was very classy about it!t makes me remember how in high school, teens could be mean, and that appearances mattered, people categorized you and you had to be tough!

For her, all her quarry gang boys are so special and different, they complete each other:
- Haden: quiet, didn’t care about what people say about him, bad boy image, big heart and gentle, very secretive.
- Cole: school spirit junkie, good looking boy, more invested than he seemed to be, very popular with girls but played aloof.
- Joey: Her platonic soul mate, her other half,he can understand her like no one else, they shared all their secrets, school geek.
- Braxton: top athlete with model looks, great personality, very kind.

But they stand for each other and their interactions were so endearing, moving, funny.I loved that no matter what, they always have each other’s back. Back to were they met for the first time when she was five years old, it felt so natural to them to be connected, even she was new in the neighborhood. They immediately get well together and never get separated, until the end of this year.
We can sense how important this year was important to them and everyone began to reveal more of themselves, like that each moment counted. She was the rock of their group.
Some of them fall in love, some got their heart broken, some had family’s issues, but even through the difficulties, this close-knit group sticked together and helped each other out.. it’s a friendship that stands for a lifetime.
Laila had different interactions with them, unique. Never one was behind an other, it was equal but different at the same time.

I don’t want to spoil the story because all i can say that Laila found love during this year. She was so oblivious of his feelings and all the others boys knew about it and damn it was intense, so real and i thought she was kind of overwhelmed about it. But this guy was patient with her, and i truly think that they are soulmates, even she was in denial at first. Their love was so beautiful; best friends, lovers, partners with a honesty very mature for teens, but never felt unreal. Young love but so strong, and he was so romantic, makes definitely my heart swoon!!

All of them grew up, had different choices of lives, future, trying to find a way, future but without being together, something they never experienced before. It’s why the story was so moving, seing them having their last moments together. And when you realize that, some of them understood that they had to be honest to themselves, even with the fear to be rejected by the others.

You should read this amazing true heart story about this young girl, trying to find a place in the world, and finding herself in the way! I was so glad to received an ARC from Southern Belle Promotions. I was experiencing a lot through Laila’s POV: happiness, sadness, laughter, hope,..,but even if the end kind of shocked me, even crushed my heart (i was sobbing, but i tried to stay strong). But this is life, with good, tough times that you had to go through. This book has obviously a special place in my heart, and trust me i was so surprised by the writing, story, but in a very good way! So just read it!Go find Laila!!

I’m at a loss for words right now… I finished Finding Laila early this morning and I’m still reeling from the experience, letting it all sink in. So much emotion!! I was literally blown away. I went into this book expecting it to be a light and sweet YA read about a girl finding herself—her journey. Boy, was I wrong. It was brilliant. There’s no other way to explain it. TK Rapp surprised me at every turn (or swipe) of the page. The story was written brilliantly well and it captivated me from the very beginning. I felt like a movie was unfolding in front of me. I was emotionally invested in this story…in these characters. WOW. I’m just…sigh. MASSIVE BOOK HANGOVER.
“She doesn’t understand how we all fit together.”
“No one understands,” Cole shouts. “That’s the beauty of it: we’re misfits.”

Joey, Cole, Braxton, Haden, and Laila – what a wonderful group of kids!!! Seniors in high school experiencing all sorts of emotions, drama, and the impending changes life throws our way at that age. They had been the best of friends for over 12 years and they just clicked. They fit together like a perfect puzzle – each brought their own piece and made the group whole. The way the boys were protective over Laila made me swoon, bad! They had no problem whatsoever standing up for her and defending her against the bullies and petty girls that didn’t understand their friendship; not that Laila needed much defending, really. She spoke her mind, kicked ass and took names.
“While all the other girls around are clawing and beating each other to be noticed, you are happy to stay in the background away from the spotlight—unseen. But I see you; I always have.”

Just when I thought I had the story figured out, TK managed to prove that she had yet another thing up her sleeve. I kept falling in love with these characters and this book! I laughed, I swooned, I CRIED! OMG – I felt so many different emotions!!! I connected 500% with everyone, so it was like I was living Laila’s life. I was right there. My heart broke for her, for them, but it just as well felt so full of love! Sigh… I was/am quite the emotional mess, if you couldn’t tell…
“He put everything on the line—our friendship, the fate of our group, all of it—for me. For us.”

Yes, there WAS romance in this book and it was PHENOMENAL. I just about died swooning!!!! Really, no joke. I won’t tell you WHO Laila fell in love with because it would honestly ruin it for you, but trust me when I say it was incredible seeing them venture into the romantic side of their relationship. I fell in love with how much they cared for each other. It was truly BEAUTIFUL.
“When we become comfortable with what we know, changes—big or small—can be hard to accept. But for us to grow and become the adults we are meant to be, we have to adapt. Life is change, but doesn’t mean that we forget.”

Oh, dear… This book has ruined me for any and all other YA books. It was true perfection. The book’s pace was great, the character development was amazing, and the storyline was hands down fantastic. I’ve got zero complaints about this book. In fact, I’m itching to re-read it…and I JUST finished it!!!! I can’t even remember the last time this ever happened! Gah!! BOOK HANGOVER!!!!!

And OMG – that Epilogue. Oh. My.
WOW.
My emotions were already on high alert and that epilogue did me in. I CRIED (uh-gain). Now, calm down – YES, there was a HEA. Trust me, I would’ve died otherwise, but sheesh… talk about an emotional ending!! Sigh….
“I have loved you for so long, and I know you love me. No matter what the future holds, I want you to find the Laila you are meant to be, because I’m going to love every version of her.”

And I just died swooning….again. GO BUY THIS BOOK! Brilliant 5 stars!!!

4.5 Star Review by Jen Skewes

Words cannot even begin to describe how much I loved this book. It is one of those books that just makes you feel. It is a beautiful and amazing story about finding one’s self with the help of four amazing friends.

When Laila was five years old she moved to a new neighborhood with her parents and that is where she met four boys who would be her biggest support system through her life. Cole, Braxton, Joey and Haden have been friends with Laila for the past 12 years. It has always been just the five of them. They are each other's support system and all though all five are different and unique in their own way they are there for each other no matter what.

This is their last year of high school. For Laila these four boys have been her rock. She doesn’t have any girlfriends because being best friends with four boys causes people to talk. They either think she is dating all 4 of them and talking behind her back or they want to be her friend because they want to date on of her “guys”. But this is it. This is the year where they all decide how to begin the next stage in their life. It terrifies Laila to know that the four people who know her better than anyone will soon be leaving to start college soon. How will she be able to make it without them? What will happen when the summer comes to an end and they all go their separate ways?

These five best friends have an amazing bond that is like no other. And I think that no matter where they are in life they will always have that bond. And that is one of the many things that I loved about this story. This is Laila’s journey to finding herself. Along the way she found love, new friendships, things about herself that terrified her. But through it all she had her best friends. Each guy played a different role in her life. Together they were all very close but they each opened up to Laila in their own way, in ways that they couldn’t always open up to each other, at least not right away. And in return they were always there for her. They each had different personalities and even in school had other friends but no matter what they always made time for each other and it always came back to the five of them.

I can’t say enough about this book. It is by far one of my favorites this year, even though the year has just begun. It just makes you feel. I felt like I was a part of this close circle of friends. I wanted to know all about them, what they were thinking, what they were feeling, what secrets they were keeping. I related to some of them on different levels. I laughed with them, I cried with them and most of all I wanted to see them all just be happy. Finding Laila is one of those books that at the end it leaves you with a hang over and wanting more. The epilogue will completely surprise you in ways I cannot explain. Everyone needs to read this story. It is about love, true friendships, finding yourself, and yet so much more. I think the only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because I needed more in the end. I needed to see this group of friends in five years and know that they all made it through college and still found their way back to each other. I would love perhaps a novella to continue Laila’s story and the guys as well. I would love to see where they all end up. But either way this story is amazing and one that everyone should read!!

Finding Laila by T.K. Rapp is a coming of age story that will grab at your heartstrings and pull you through the entire book while reading. Laila befriends a group of four boys with very unique personalities on her first day in her new home that become a family she never even knew she would need. Each of the four boys loves and protects Laila in their own way, forging a friendship that the reader can only guess will withstand the test of time. Laila struggles throughout the story, taking place throughout her senior year of high-school and the inevitable changes that are starting to impact each of their lives. This story was a 3.5 star read for me and I would recommend it to others.

Laila is close to each of the boys that she considers her best friends, her family but she is especially close to Joey who is the only one of the four that knows every one of her secrets. Spending all of her free time with them doesn't make her the most popular girl in school but she doesn't care what her classmates think about her, knowing that these boys have her back no matter what because they love her, each in there own way. It is only when Haden, the broody quiet artist one of the group, finally confessing that his feelings for Laila are more than friendship and have been for a very long time that things begin to shift and change.

Haden has loved Laila for as long as he can remember but he has kept those feelings to himself; worrying that she wouldn't reciprocate the feelings and abiding by an oath that the four boys took long ago that she was off limits to all of them romantically as to not ruin the amazing relationship that they all had with each other. After a nudge from her bestie Joey, Haden shows Laila how he feels in the most unconventional of ways and they decide to try to have a romantic relationship.

As Laila and Haden's relationship becomes more serious and she begins an unlikely friendship with Joey's girlfriend, the only girl friend she has had in her life, the changes that are taking place without her tight knit group make her anxious for the end of the school year when she knows that she and each of the boys will be going their separate ways to college. Wondering how she will ever survive without each of them everyday haunts her on more than one occasion. Until a revelation on her eighteenth birthday from her parents throws her world into even more of a tailspin. With the boys at her side, they go on a road trip the summer before they all head off to college, with Laila hoping to spend one last time alone with her barmy, as she calls them, while looking for the answers that she needs in order to accept the truths that she has been told.

The strength and courage that Laila has throughout the story to forge her own path in light of all the changes around her is exceptionally encouraging. T.K. Rapp has a way of making the reader feel that you are right there next to her through each of the situations she faces; cheering her on and supporting her right along with Joey, Braxton, Haden and Cole. The ending of this book was nothing that I could have ever anticipated and I won't lie that I grabbed for the tissues and cried like a baby. I encourage you to pick up this book as you will not be disappointed.

I went in to this book completely blind. I didn't read the synopsis or any of the reviews. And I can honestly say I was completely captivated right from the start!

This is so much more than just your typical YA book. The author has brilliantly crafted a storyline that is as touching as it is smart. As humorous as it is tearful. The focus in on Laila Nixon and her 4 best friends, Braxton, Cole, Joey and Haden, yeah all guys. She met them when she was a youngster and new to the neighborhood. And they promptly adopted her as one of their own and never looked back.

The book takes place during their senior year in high school. Laila is happy with her life, especially when she is with her guys. Her barmy as she likes to put it. They protect her from every nasty threat, every skanky girl wanting to be her and sometimes even from guys who can't seem to treat their bbf the right way. And she loves them for it. Laila can hold her own and loves each of her guys in a different way. Joey stands out as her true best friend, sharing every secret through the years. He is truly her center. Cole is the flirt of the group, Braxton the super jock and Haden is the quiet, artistic one. Each brings their own sense of pride to their motley crew and when they are together, they don't seem to need anyone or anything else. It is quite simply perfect.

Senior year, though, inevitably brings change and Laila just can't grasp that they won't all be together once they separate for college. She is so torn in just wanting life to stand still yet knows they all must move forward.

What is so wonderful about this book is that the author is so true to her characters. They act like the typical HS seniors and every encounter, every adventure feels so real. It was like walking the halls of my own HS and enjoying those carefree days again. Laila's resistance to new girlfriends, to secrets revealed, had me empathizing with her. She just wanted her guys to stay with her forever and never lose that vital connection that made her whole. Her fear of the unknown, though, was always made easier just by being around her boys.

I loved that Laila does get involved with one of guys and has the kind of innocent love affair most dreamed about at that age. Their ultimate road trip, the standoff with her parents, finally wanting to spend time with her little sister, all the confrontations with the b**chy girls of her class, all of it was portrayed so well. Even with the sadness that is part of this story, it still made me smile. I was at times envious of Laila's tight bond with her guys and often felt like one of them while immersed in their journey.

It is the kind of book you just can't put down and when you do finish, you are smiling broadly through your tears. And yes I challenge you not to cry. I can honestly say I was a bit of a mess and had to take a break to grab some tissues.

I am beyond impressed with this author and look forward to discovering more of her work. And I'm hopeful we might just hear from this group again.

A huge 5 stars and very highly recommended. You will not be disappointed!

Finding Laila is about a seventeen year old girl, living her life, and this story follows her heartfelt journey as she begins to find out who her individual identity is and what the future holds for her. She is surrounded by an incredible barmy of boys: Braxton, Cole, Joey, and Haden. Each boy holds a special place in her heart, a deep kinship that has bonded them for 12+ years. This story follows the ups and downs of their senior year of high school into their college/post graduations careers.
Have you ever read a book and sat in a moment of stunned silence when you finish the book and thought to yourself “This is a perfect representation of what the genre should be like”? Well I whole heartedly believe that Finding Laila by TK Rapp is a perfect representation of Young Adult fiction. It is the wonderful story of a young woman who is transitioning from one phase of life to another: a girl who is becoming a woman. There is a well written ebb and flow of teenage angst that is perfect for the story. It develops what each character goes through and adds character to this story. It is never unnecessary or overwhelming. It allows for drama to naturally occur and growth of characters and relationships to take place.
The characters within this story are incredible. We see a group of best friends that has been constant in Laila’s life through thick and thin since she first moved to town. It has been over a decade and life has been better because of their deep relationships. Finding Laila is an authentic story of life for a young girl. She deals with bullies, classes, boys, the future, and finding her identity outside of her family and friends. This book touches on so many different social issues yet never overwhelms the reader with forcing an opinion or preaching of what should be. It is the perfect account of what a seventeen year old would deal with today.
I felt the emotions from each situation and character leap off the page and into my heart. You feel excited for Braxton when he wins the game. You smirk at Cole and his lady wooing ways. You want to hug Joey for being so amazing and watch Haden draw a masterpiece. Then there is this one part. If you have read it then you know what I mean… If not, when you read it you will know. I felt like I was running and headed face first into a closed glass door, falling flat on my ass. It was unexpected, shocking and knocked me down hard. Wow. Point is, you feel when you read this book and that is what pushes it into the incredible category.
This is my first book by TK Rapp and it will most certainly not be the last. She has a way with words and situations that reveals a truth filled with authenticity! Finding Laila is a book that you will not want to miss.
