She inherits the bookshop of her dreams . . . But she has to run it with the ex she vowed never to speak with again.

Shelby Thatcher adores working in the charming small-town bookshop her grandmother opened years ago. Since high school she's helped Gram turn the shop into a community hub for book lovers in the lakeside town of Granville, NC. When her beloved grandma passes away, Shelby inherits the bookstore. But to her shock, Gram leaves half ownership to Gray Briggs, the man who broke Shelby's heart years ago.

Granville residents have been vilifying Gray as long as he can remember. After graduating high school he couldn't skip town fast enough, even though it meant leaving the girl he'd fallen deeply in love with and alienating her family once and for all. Now he's back, the beneficiary of his elderly friend's will. Facing the town's animosity is difficult, but seeing Shelby again is sheer torture. No one could ever stir his heart the way she did.

As the adversaries are forced to work together, Gram's beyond-the-grave scheme is working--Shelby's old feelings for Gray begin to resurface. But the problems that destroyed their relationship before still remain, and a new one surfaces--one that threatens Gram's beloved bookshop. Is their love doomed to fail again, or will they find a way to make it work this time around?

DNF 20% review: I have really enjoyed several of Denise's books - specifically The Summer of You and Me was 5 Stars and I enjoyed A Novel Proposal and Love, Unscripted.

This book releases in October. I was really excited to pick this up because I love the premise....an inheritance twist, a cozy small-town bookshop, and a second chance romance sounded right up my alley. Denise Hunter’s writing style pulled me in quickly, and I was ready to see how Shelby and Gray’s story would unfold. Shelby and Gray dated many years ago, didn't work out, she inherits her Gram's bookshop after she passes away and Gray gets the other half.

However, one thing took me out of the story pretty early on. Shelby already has a boyfriend, Logan, and they’ve been dating for five months. I flipped ahead to see when that would resolve, and the breakup doesn’t happen until around 66%. I personally have convictions about reading romances where one of the characters is already in a relationship for a significant portion of the book, so I decided to set this one aside. I don't consider that a spoiler because it's obvious the happy ending is supposed to be between Gray and Shelby.

I think readers who don’t mind that setup and enjoy second-chance romance tropes will still enjoy this one, it just wasn’t the right fit for me.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for a copy of the audiobook and ebook to read and review. All thoughts are my own.

The premise of inheriting something that needs to be shared with someone you don’t want back in your life was intriguing. I enjoyed the author’s exploration of abandonment, meddling, bullying and shame. Most of all, I appreciated her spotlighting the feeling of belonging.

The story did feel organic, but something about the romance arc didn’t click for me. I don’t think the right balance between tension and payoff was achieved. I liked Shelby and Grayson, but I wonder if perhaps their arc wasn't fully developed. The conversation-heavy prose made me uncomfortable because (1) I could see that the author was trying to make her characters feel real and dynamic, and (2) because I could feel the momentum slowing. The ‘fluff’ was glaring at me, and I found myself skimming. When I willingly set down a book, I know there’s something not quite right.

The Summer of You and Me, Wildflower Falls, and Bookshop by the Sea were all 5-star reads for me. Character development and less dialogue would have elevated A Novel Proposal and The Second Story Bookshop for me.

I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.

4.5 ⭐️s — Shelby Thatcher and Grayson Briggs fell for each other their senior year of high school—but their young love couldn’t survive the odds stacked against them. Gray was painted as the town troublemaker—a reputation he unjustly earned due to the misdeeds of his alcoholic father. To escape the town that hated him, he left Shelby behind to nurse a broken heart.

A little over a decade later, they are reunited after the death of her grandmother who left them spilt ownership of her beloved bookshop. Shelby and her family are dumbfounded, but when Gray offers his accounting assistance while she looks for someone to take on that role in the business, she begins to see how much he’s still like the guy she fell in love with—and the ways he’s grown. Can Shelby open her heart and trust the man who caused the greatest pain she’d ever endured?

This is my second Denise Hunter book and I’m a fan! I enjoyed the story evolution and pacing. I’m a justice-lover through and through and was so riled up over the town’s treatment of Gray. This read definitely had me in my feels!

If you enjoy second chance romances, small town settings, and book-selling MCs, add this one to your call TBR list!

Thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the ALC! All opinions are my own.

Loved this story about Shelly who helped her grandmother in the bookshop she started in Granville South Carolina. When she passed she let 51%of the bookshop and 49% to Gray. Gray is not accepted well in this town as his Dad murdered someone . He left town as soon as he could and made a name for himself in Riverbend. He did come back to Shelly with the bookshop despite the way people still treated him. He actually gave her his shares. See how they worked together to keep the bookshop thriving. DId her and Shelly get back together and did the town finally accept him. You must read this book to find out. A GREAT READ.

Pretty sure this was my first Denise Hunter book... but definitely not my last! I started it late, stayed up way too long, then woke up early just to finish. All the feels with this one.

I loved the way the story moved between past and present. It didn’t slow things down, it filled in all the emotional gaps and made me believe in the chemistry between Shelby and Gray, then and now. If soulmates are real, it’s them.

After Shelby’s Gram passes, she leaves the bookshop to both Shelby and Gray. He’s not welcome in town (due to family history/rumors) and plans to leave, but sticks around to help save the shop. What neither of them planned for was how much the past and feelings still lingers between them.

This had heartbreak, healing, and a love that was impossible to ignore! The way the town treated Gray made me so frustrated, but his quiet patience and steady love for Shelby carried the story. I really felt it!

I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.

Another winner from Denise Hunter! I loved listening to this book. First, let's talk about the narration; the narrator is absolutely amazing and did a great job of bringing this book to life. Secondly, let's talk about the story. This book is about a second-chance romance between high school first loves. The hero has had many challenges in his life and is a master at overcoming them and making his life better. Through struggles not of his own making, he has become a better man, which I loved about him. The heroine has had hardships and struggles as well; she has gumption and a protective spirit for those she cares about. Lastly, it is a book with a bookstore as the main setting. With suspense (which I am totally for) and sweet romance, this all culminates into a wonderful story that I totally recommend.
*I received a copy of this book by the publisher, and this is my honest opinion.

Audiobook review.
The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter, narrated by Kim Churchill.
This book had a great premise and an eye catching cover.
The story was well written and easy to follow.
Kim Churchill's narration was a highlight, skillfully bringing the characters to life and making the story enjoyable to listen to. Although the main character didn't quite resonate with me, Churchill's narration helped to keep the story engaging.
Overall, a pleasant audiobook experience.

Ok, hear me out! Not a religious person nor am I really a soft romance girly BUT THIS, THIS BOOK! I love a good romance with tension, an underdog, and a its been you this whole time scenario. Throw in a small town, a bookstore and you have me hooked which is what I was. I listened to and read this book. It was great, easily a 5 star in my opinion. Sometimes you just need a low to no spice physical romance book. So if you have a thoughts and feeling face, don’t want people looking the other way while you are in public then this is it. Or maybe you are like me, you have kids and your reading is listening to audiobooks in the car then this is it. Thank you Denise Hunter for a great read/listen!

I just wanted to take Gray in my arms and make everything okay for him. Poor sweet boy getting bullied almost his whole life and just takes it. I wasn’t expecting this to be so angsty, but damn do I love a damaged/hurt Hero.

Oh yeah…there’s a bookshop in this plot, but the storyline with Gray took center stage for me. So good.

In The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter, the reader is in for a treat. Real people, real feelings, and a story I couldn't put down!

Shelby Thatcher loved working in the bookshop with Gram. Her beloved Gram has died before anyone was ready for that loss, and Shelby inherits the bookshop. "But to her shock, Gram leaves half ownership to Gray Briggs, the man who broke Shelby's heart years ago."

"Granville residents have been vilifying Gray as long as he can remember." Since his father went to jail, Gray was bullied in school, and treated poorly by the town. He is not to blame for his father's actions, only the townspeople did not get that memo. I was in awe at his self-restraint, and work ethic in high school in the wake of how he was treated. Thankfully his Grandma looks out for him. She is also good friends with Shelby's Gram. Now he's back because of Gram's beyond the grave scheme to get Gray and Shelby to find closure from their past.

There is so much more to this story than a heart-tugging romance, I loved it, and highly recommend it!

Anything Denise Hunter writes I have to read! this beautiful second chance romance was wonderfully done. I love how we got the perspectives of bothenthe FMC and MMC. The story also incorporated dual timelines from present day to 11 years ago. super easy read with short chapters.

My heart went out to the MMC (Gray). He endured so much hardship and hate, but remained kind and rose above it all. The FMC (Shelby) would irritate me, she came off selfish at times when it came to the MMC and the reasoning behind his departure all those years ago. Why would anyone want to be somewhere they were treated poorly.

This story also touches on grief, loss of loved ones, feelings of abandonment, and bullying. The emotions are definitely felt while reading, I wanted to punch every side character that treated the MMC wrong. Overall I enjoyed the story and cannot wait to read everything else this author has written.

Audiobook Thoughts:

When I started listening to this book, I had some reservations, particularly about the narrator. However, around the halfway mark, something changed. I enjoyed the narration, perhaps because I changed my mind about it. This audiobook has the potential to surprise the listener with its unexpected appeal.

Disclaimer: This was my first Denise Hunter book; you could take this review as an unbiased review or take it as it is.

Anyway, I scroll on NetGalley, particularly in the Christian Fiction section, and saw this book. I thought, "Why not give this author a try since I’ve been meaning to try her books after seeing her books being recommended within the Christian booktube community" Before I begin discussing the book, I will share my thoughts. I thought I would explain a couple of things that bothered me when reading books, specifically contemporary and clean romance novels. Throughout my reading journey, I’ve realized that I'm not a fan of clean romance books that include physical attraction between characters; however, I’ve also found books that handle this element well by integrating it into the story in a meaningful way, while others do not, often resorting to clichés and stereotypes. Second, I'm not a fan of stereotypical romance novels that are easy to predict the plot and characters' actions. Now to the review and a short synopsis of the book.

Short and sweet synopsis:

This is a second-chance romance, a heartwarming tale that takes place in a small town. We follow two characters, Shelby Thatcher and Gray Briggs. Shelby and Gary have a past; they were infatuated with each other and were in a relationship. However, their relationship soon ended on a rather sour note, leaving an everlasting scar on them both. Shelby loves working in her grandmother's bookshop, helping her grandma. Unfortunately, her grandma dies, leaving her the bookshop; however, to her horror, her ex-boyfriend, a.k.a. Gray Briggs, has been given half of the ownership of the bookshop. Putting her feelings aside, they are forced to see each other and work together.

Review:

This book took a while to unfold, and at one point, I found myself switching between the audiobook and the ebook in hopes of gaining my attention; however, that was unsuccessful. So, at around 50ish percent, I switched back to the audiobook and found myself enjoying it. But I wasn’t a massive fan of the relationship between Shelby and Gray, especially their physical attraction to each other, which just rubbed me the wrong way. Many times, I was uncomfortable and caught myself cringing at the descriptions. Another thing was that Shelby was already in a relationship, having thought about Gray's physique, which was just a no. As I said earlier, this book has two timelines, present and past, which I was confused about in the beginning and middle until I started listening to the audiobook, which became clear to me, which shouldn’t have taken me so long, but sadly it did. I also wasn’t a fan of the fact that in Shelby's past and present relationships, she hadn’t been honest with her boyfriends about her true feelings. At this point, you’re probably wondering why I rated this book so high. Well, it wasn’t until I switched back to the audiobook rather than simply reading it with my eyes that I started enjoying it a bit more. To my surprise, the characters began to grow on me and I found myself rooting for them. The character's growth in this book was well done, which is partly why I enjoyed it so much. I like the fact that this book centers around saving a bookshop and helping it gain attraction. The setting around the bookshop was beautifully described, and it added a unique charm to the story. Lastly, while this book is categorized as Christian Fiction, the faith in this book was very subtle; there were a few mentions of prayer, which was disappointing, as I enjoy a good romance novel with strong faith elements. Nonetheless, I recommended this book to those who want a small-town romance that talks about books and saving a bookshop.

The Second Story Bookshop is a heartwarming second-chance romance between Shelby and her ex-boyfriend, Gray. The two are thrown back into each other’s lives after the death of Shelby’s sweet, meddling grandmother—who was so lovingly written, I genuinely felt a sense of loss. Her presence lingers warmly throughout the story.

Shelby and Gray unexpectedly find themselves co-owners of her grandmother’s beloved bookstore. As they work together to preserve her legacy, they’re forced to confront their complicated history—all while facing unexpected challenges that threaten the shop’s future.

The emotional history between them felt so real. I especially enjoyed the dual timelines—flashing between their high school years and the present—which added so much depth to their characters. There were moments I wanted to shout, “What are you doing?!”—but those frustrating choices made their eventual growth feel all the more satisfying. The character development is spot-on and incredibly rewarding.

There are emotional themes around bullying and parental abandonment, so readers sensitive to those topics may want to be aware—but I felt they were handled with care and added emotional richness to the story. The portrayal of bullying, in particular, was striking. At times I was shocked that someone would actually behave that way—yet sadly, it wasn’t unrealistic. The book does an excellent job showing how cruelty in adolescence can echo into adulthood if left unchecked. I appreciated how everything came together in the end, and the resolution still managed to surprise me.

I also loved the sister-in-law dynamic woven into the story, and the cameos from Gavin and Wes from Riverbend were such a fun treat for fans of Hunter’s previous work.

I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrator did an excellent job capturing Shelby’s voice. Her performance brought each character to life and made the alternating POVs easy to follow.

If you’re looking for a sweet, clean romance with depth, charm, and lovable characters, The Second Story Bookshop is one to add to your list!

The Second Story Bookshop is all the things I have come to love and expect from Denise Hunter’s love stories. Intriguing story with depth, well developed characters, poignancy and strong emotions, and heartfelt romance that touches on all the right places. Shelby and Gray have a genuinely deep love for one another and have since they first met; it’s a one of a kind, once in a lifetime kind of love. All the odds were stacked against them when they were young and sadly, they caved and let it go. I am so glad there is room for second chances because these two deserve it. I love Gray as a character. He has been handed a terrible hand in life and even in that, he continues to work hard and rise above. Shelby is fiercely loyal to her family and her bookshop and wants nothing more than to continue her grandma’s legacy. The immediate chemistry between these two is palpable and I love how the story takes place in modern day with flashbacks to tell their backstory. Gray continues to show up and help, because it’s the right thing to and because he’s desperate to offer his apology to Shelby. She may not want to hear what he has to say, but her grandma knew she needed it for closure. I love the way he showed up, even when everyone was against him. I love how Shelby saw what no one else could see and championed for him. I loved the way they were willing to stand up to everyone for what was right and, in the end, as it should, love always wins. There are so many feelings and emotions and tender moments of raw love, and I could not get enough of these two.
I had the added privilege of listening to the audiobook and believe that is part of what truly brought this book to life in my mind and in my heart. The voices were captured convincingly, and the tone and pace were perfect.

~2.5, rounded up. Thanks to Thomas Nelson & NetGalley for the ALC to listen & review. All thoughts are my own~

RECAP: Shelby Thatcher is shocked to inherit only half of her grandmother’s beloved bookshop, while the other half goes to Gray Briggs, the man who broke her heart. Years after fleeing Granville, Gray returns to face the town’s scorn & the woman he never forgot. As they’re forced to work together, old feelings resurface, but past wounds & a new threat to the shop test whether love can truly get a second chance.

REVIEW: As the synopsis implies, we got a second chance romance here, folks. I see this as a light read, perfect for its 10/7/25 pub date. However, I found Shelby to be immature & borderline aggravating at times. There's also a hint of insta-love, but given it started when they were in high school, I just couldn't tell if it was instant or just young love. I also hated Granville, because the town and its people are a character all their own. I come from a small town, but if it was anything like Granville, I'd high tail it out of there - it was such a toxic, small minded community at times. But anyways... Other than that, it was an OK read, probably could have been a tad shorter. Not my typical genre, but I can see this working for someone who does like this genre, especially with the trope described.

This is the first book that I have listened too by this author and it will definitely not be my last .The story was written so beautifully and brought together so well.I adored Shelby and how kind she was to Daryl and how she stood up for Gray when it seemed everyone was against him.I cried and laughed throughout this book and can see how good it must be to live in a small town.
The narrator Kim Churchill was extremely talented as she voiced the different characters so well and her different tones made it very believable .she brought me right into the heart of the story as if I was living it myself instead of just listening to it .
I would recommend this book to any reader that likes heartfelt romance and anyone who wants to forget what’s happening in real life.

Wow, what a book! I love anything that Denise Hunter writes--- her stories are always the perfect blend of romance, heart and small-town charm. In this particular story though, we get to see some of the downsides of living in a small-town: like what happens when you're an outcast in that town. Gray and Shelby had such a beautiful romance... though certainly not one without its challenges. They were unlikely high school sweethearts, with him being judged by the town by his father's reputation, but things ended badly when he left town after graduation. Years later, when they have to work together to save the bookshop that Shelby's grandmother unexpected left to both of them, all of those old feelings start to resurface... right along with the old challenges. I really love a good second chance romance, and this one was done so well. The story alternates between their high school romance and the present day, and I loved seeing them fall in love for the first time but also seeing their personal growth as well. I couldn't help but feel for Gray and all that he'd gone through... it made seeing them get this second chance at a happily ever after all that much sweeter. If you love a Christian romance with small-town drama, fantastic chemistry, and a hard fought happily ever after, this is absolutely one not to be missed.

Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me the pleasure of this ARC. It was super enjoyable and sweet and fun loving.
This book wasn’t just second chance, if you get into the nitty gritty of it, I think it was third chance.

Reasons this book isn’t rated higher all have to do with my preferences. I instantly get the ick when one (or both) of the main characters are in a relationship with SOMEONE ELSE while they start something (even if emotionally) with the other main character. And that didn’t just happen once, it happened twice in this book. History was really repeating itself for these characters.

Also, the entire plot and all the tension surrounding Gray’s backstory resolved itself in the last chapter of the book. It didn’t need to be resolved for the book to exist, but the fact that it didn’t felt like a last ditch effort to tie up any loose ends.

Lastly, I probably would’ve preferred to read this and not audiobook it (tho I love audiobooks) because the narrator read this book as if it was fanfiction - if you know you know- and if you want to know, just ask.

I enjoyed The Second Story Bookshop. It is a second-chance romance between Shelby and Gray. They both have dealt with trauma, and in Shelby's case, she is still holding a lot of resentment.

When Shelby's grandmother leaves her bookstore to Shelby and Gray, they are forced to work together, at least temporarily. I liked both characters, and I was rooting for their happily ever after.

Gray is not welcome in town because of something his father did. He wasn't liked in high school, and the town has a long memory and no forgiveness. I felt for him and didn't like the way he was treated. It's never fair to be bullied, no matter what your parent has done.

There is a minor love triangle, especially in the past portions with the flashbacks, but things are handled differently in the present. I wasn't sure with the first one happening that I would enjoy the story, but thankfully, Shelby learned from her mistakes, and it was a good story. Kim Churchill did a great job bringing the characters to life.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and Net Galley for the opportunity to listen to this book. I am not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you netgalley, Denise, Thompson Nelson and Harper Collins for the alc of Second Stoey Bookshop!!

What a sweet story!! I loved this one a lot. Shel and Grey were Childhood lovers to strangers to lovers again, all thanks to Grams interference! 👏🏼👏🏼

Shelby beautifully loved him, the sweet quiet kid who got bullied for no reason other than his dad’s bad choices. At the end of the school year, things escalated too far and he left without saying goodbye in person, and broke her heart.
Years later, Shel’s gram left a surprise in her will, giving 49% of her bookshop to Gray. This stirred things up and Shelby fought feelings until she just couldn’t fight anymore. Their love stirred up town troubles and yet again as adults had to defend their relationship, while trying to save the bookshop from foreclosure. 🥹🥹

Their love was meant to last and he fought for his second chance. 🥹🥹 it was messy and beautiful but all so worth it. 🥹 if you love small town closed door romances, I definitely recommend The Second Story Bookshop. 🫶

I absolutely fell in love with The Second Story Bookshop. From the very first chapters, the characters pulled me in with their depth and warmth, making me feel like I was part of their story. I was constantly intrigued, and the pacing felt just right, at a medium speed that gave me time to savor the details without ever dragging.

I opted to listen to this one as an audiobook, and I’m so glad I did. The narrator’s voice was engaging and brought the characters to life in such a vivid way that it felt like listening to a friend telling me a story. Towards the end, a huge twist had me literally turning the volume up, making sure I was hearing it correctly. That moment sealed it for me; I knew I had stumbled onto something special.

Overall, I’m eager to purchase a physical copy in person so I can revisit it on my shelf. Without giving away spoilers, trust me when I say this is a must-read for any book lover.

Denise Hunter is a really good author and I have enjoyed everyone of her books; that I read. The Second Story Bookshop didn't disappoint.

This story takes you down the path of Shelby Thatcher and her high school sweetheart, Gray Briggs. 11 years ago, Shelby and Gray fell in love and at first, they kept it secret, since the entire town hated Gray - because Gray's dad accidently killed someone in a fight. Everything is Gray's fault and other than his grandmother and Shelby, everyone would rather see him in jail, gone or dead. When the worst came, he felt like there was no hope, so he left and joined the military.

Shelby crushed that he left her, just like her mom, doesn't care why and won't return his calls. Now present day, Shelby's grandmother just passed and left her bookstore to her and Gray.

The town still "hates" Gray and blames him for everything and can Shelby trust her heart and Gray? Can the town see Gray for who he really is and not who his father is? Can healing begin?

This was another awesome ready!

going into this book i was so hocked i loved the idea of two ex lovers being pulled together to do a job and rekindling their relationship.

but honestly some aspects of this book didn’t 100% click for me or feel authentic to the story. in certain parts of the book it felt like the author needed a reason to show that the towns people still hated grayson so she randomly threw in something seemingly out of the blue.

i don’t want to spoil anything but im sure when you read it you can tell which aspects of the book felt like last minute additions.

i thought grayson and shelby were really cute but i wish we got to see more from them in relation to the pining and the yearning. especially after shelby breaks up with logan i wish we got more of her wondering if it was the right thing to do and if she even wanted to attempt dating again especially getting feelings for grayson.

This story was SO GOOD. The jury is still out but it MAY have pulled me face first out of my reading slump. I LOVED THIS ONE. Exes, forced proximity, second chance, and dual timeline (lots of flashbacks to their highschool years).

Think Rory and Jess (Gilmore Girls) but Gray (or Jess) has a ton more pain and the people who hate him are HORRIBLE… and a second chance for them both! Thanks for a meddling grandma from beyond the grave. 🤪😂

Add in that Shelby (the Rory of it all) inherits a bookstore and the force proximity of him inheriting it alongside her, ah!! It’s so sweet and I love the characters. Shelby’s sister in law is an amazing bff, her brother and dad really grow on me.

Also, I listened to it, and the narration was FANTASTIC. Even when I got anxious about what was going to happen and sped it up to 2x and 3x. 😅 so audio is a ln amazing option!!
