Rating for whole series: 4.5/5

The first three or so volumes were a bit slower from what I am used to with Tonogai's stories but once the revelations started there was no stopping.

Judge is a game of judgement (dah!). For Judge 9 players are abducted, each one has one of the 7 deadly sins to be judged for. Every 12 hours they have to vote for the one of them that will be killed. Simple, right? NO!

When 9 strangers are put together in an abandoned house (or whatever that thing was) and the rules of the game are laid in front of them everyone will do pretty much anything to survive. From fights to plotting devious plans and alliances, only four can make it out alive.

Judge was a very sick and twisted game, so of course I loved it. The beginning was a bit slower. There were a lot of arguments about how they should vote. They players never really did what the game master was asking them, which was to judge the sins of the other players. They never really talked about what each ones sin was and we only got see a few of their stories as flashbacks.

And as the story progressed and people started dropping dead it seemed like they might get what was promised to them but then there were like million twists and things went downhill pretty fast for our remaining players. I loved how things progressed, it only made sense that I couldn't tell who was the bad guy in this one. But I am proud of my mystery solving skills that I had the right suspect (almost) by volume 3.

If you are into manga and fast paced thrillers, sick stories and horror this is definitely one you should read.

I was surprised in a positive way. I have read Doubt by this same mangaka before and I actually enjoyed that, but I was not expecting this to also be as good. The art is a bit creepy, but (especially the sideprofiles) were kinda awkward.

Judge is another death game manga by the master Yoshiki Tonogai. This series is about a group of some random people, that do not know eachother. They will have to vote for one of them to die every 12 hours.

I do not think this is a spoiler, so I will be saying it... At first I thought it is great that this has a gay character, but now that I really think about it, it seems like his sin is his sexuality... Which is quite problematic.

I'm re-reading this book in English. I started this series in Japan and think I got up to volume three before I moved. I'm glad to see that it's available in the US. I was really invested in this the first time around and was wanting to know how things would turn out. I guess I will this time.

In this first volume we get our first impressions from our new group of unfortunates. It's a big mind trip and I love it. It's not exactly ground breaking but it's at least entertainign.

Seitsemän kuolemansyntiä kiehtovalla twistillä. Joukko ihmisiä on suljettu outoon vankilaan. He heräävät eläinmaskit päässään. Ja heidän on päätettävä, kuka heidän joukostaan kuolee.

3,5 stars? It's hard to say much about this yet because this volume just gathers the people together and explains the rules of the death game. Hiro, the bunny headed guy, gets a proper backstory flashback, a few others only a couple of details. The concept, however, is that they are all there because they are "guilty" of one of the seven sins.

The youngsters have to vote who is to be sacrificed at set intervals, otherwise everybody die. It is said that four of them will survive but I don't believe that, there are only eight (because one of them is offed before the game even properly starts) of them...

So, I'm intrigued enough that I will read more. Art is clear and the animal heads as disturbing as in Tonogai's earlier work, haha.

As a final note, it obviously isn't very nice that one of the boys is implied to be there because he likes boys but he's okay with the fact himself, so let's see what is done with that plot point (if anything).

What do you get when you combine the seven deadly sins, adorably horrifying stuffed animals, and a game of judge and jury unlike any other? You get Judge, created by the wonderfully creepy Yoshiki Tonogai, whose art will delight yet haunt you for weeks to come. What's cuter than a stuffed animal head that you have to wear to keep yourself from dying of cyanide poisoning? No sin is too small in this battle of survival against not their captor but each other as they judge each other's worst sins. The penalty? Death.

I love this series so much, and so excited to be rereading it after so many years. There's so many wonderful things about it from the unpredictable twists to the hauntingly relatable characters to the suspenseful page turns that give you chills. What's not to love?

This is very similar to Doubt but I still find the plot line intriguing. Perhaps because it reminds me of the Saw movies. Maybe they even influenced the creation of this manga. It is still slightly confusing at the moment, I'm assuming because some of the translations online seem a bit iffy so I think I'll purchase a physical copy to help with that.

Okay so I'm going to be honest here and say I have no idea how I felt about this book. Don't get me wrong the illustrations and the concept/idea is amazing, but I'm still debating if I like where this story line is going. I'll have to read the rest of the volumes to get a better feel for everything.

If you liked Doubt, you'll probably like Judge too as it is more of the same, probably a bit more focused on "who did it" and less on gory violence than the predecessor. This kind of SAW/Danganronpa/Among Us kinda story just doesn't really do it for me any more but the fast pacing and higher stakes towards the end of the story kept me going. It was okay ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Judge not lest thee be judged

When two brothers are bound by love to the same childhood friend a lie changes all three of their lives forever.

Similar to the Saw movies an assortment of people are abducted and put in danger based on their past. However unlike Saw this seems less about teaching painful lessons to help the victims from not repeating their past sins or pay for them and is more like a dangerous episode of Survivor where the victims chose who will die next. With a shadowy assortment of figures elsewhere the first volume is rather too slow to get a really good grasp of what horrors are likely to come but if it is any sign of what is to come things are going to get darker before the final judgment is cast down.

I'm not sure if the rules make sense.
They barely know anything about each other. not even the name. how can they suddenly judge who has more sins?

Title: The Judge
Author: Yoshiki Tonogai
Genre: Horror, Mecha, Drama, Tragedy
Stars: 5 out 5
Volumes: 1 out of 6

Over-review:
What drew me to this book, was the cover. I really love the artistic work of the cover. I believe out of two or three people they do repeat. But it left me wondering what is going to happen inside this manga. The book is about what the title says; it's about judging. I also enjoyed how the Bible rules to law, and what we as society or churchy people deem to be judge.
The game is surrounded by 9 individuals who are kidnapped and put in the abandon house. Every individual has a sin which is linked to the 7 deadly sins. If you are not familiar with seven deadly sins here is a list: lust, gluttony greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. If you are a Bible Thumper like me; you can also find the list in Proverbs 6:16-19, and Colossians 3:8.
The beginning did start off slow but as the pages came closer to the end. It did start to speed up and I enjoyed the information that was given about some of the individuals. I also enjoyed this book because it had me remembering Saw the movie. Which was also a great as well. But you can kind of put two and two together and figure out what was going to happen next.
Recommendation:
I am going to read Judge 2 and see what happens next. I already purchase Doubt, but I was not aware that you had to read them in any order. That’s my bad!!

[series review]
I read Tonogai's more popular series, Doubt, back in 2020, and I thought it was *fine* but ultimately it didn't live up to the hype for me. Because of that, I really held off on reading Judge, because I expected it to be more of the same, but probably not as good.

I mean... at least I was half right?

The two are very similar in tone and vibe. They're both dark and gory and take place in gross, grimy locations. BIG Saw vibes. But Judge is SO much better. Like, I'm-tempted-to-give-it-five-stars better. It helps that there is a bit of a Danganronpa-esque element to it; a battle of wits that Doubt didn't really have. That'll always get me.

Similar to Doubt, this is a very quick read, but I found it engaging the entire way through. It kept me on my toes and kept me guessing the whole time, and there were so many excellent twists and turns all the way through.

At the end of the day, it IS a death game, and if you've consumed a lot of death game stories (hi, hello, it me!) you'll certainly recognize several of the staple tropes and cliches of the genre, but I think they were handled really well, and done in a way that did not feel predictable at all.

I'll need to stew a bit on my rating, but it's 4.5/5 at minimum. So good.

This is a re-read for me, as I just became aware that there is a 6th volume (English Version) and I wanted to refresh myself on the story. Although I have read this before, I have forgotten a lot of details because it's been a minute... So far I will say I do really love this premise. I really enjoy the characters (all which represent one of the seven deadly sins) and unraveling their stories, as well as watching them go through the moral dilemma of choosing who to kill next. The 9 characters are thrown into a game of voting for one person to be killed every time the timer in the mysterious room goes off. This (much like Doubt) does tend to remind me of Saw. However, I do think that this story is immersing me more than Doubt. I just really like the premise a bit more.

4/5 for me and worth a read!

FYI... I rated and reviewed the whole series.

I thought this was going to be similar to Danganronpa...boyyy, was I wrong...
I didn't like the art-style. I prayed to god that I wouldn't have to look at those masks throughout the whole manga, because I couldn’t understand who was saying what in a dialogue, and to my relief that was the case, at least.
I kept going because I hoped it would get better and I was curious who was the master-mind. To say I was disappointed…the plot-twist at the end and even bigger one after that. At least, it’s not to my liking. I could have predicted it, if there was some kind of clue, but there was nothing indicating it.
The characters and their back-stories were under-developed…that’s why I don’t like when there’s too many. Better to have one developed character, than the other way around.

Rating: 2.8 stars (overall)

Summary (for the whole manga):
Nine people wake up and find themselves in a building with animal masks on. Each of them have no idea how they ended up there. A stuffed doll then speaks and informs them that they are all in a game called "Judge" and that all of them are here because they committed a sin: pride, greed, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth. At each round of the game, they will have to vote for a person who they think should be punished. At the end of each round, the person with the highest votes will die. At the end, only four people are allowed to leave the game.

Review:
I gave this manga a poor rating because of the plot in the last chapter.

The concept for this is cool, but I don't know if it was the translation or the actual writing that made it so hard to follow the dialogue. It's very repetitive, particularly with the protagonist's backstory elements, and hits you over the head with the 'as you know bob' thing. Yet at the same time I can rarely tell which character is speaking and don't always follow what they're talking about. It's a slightly thicker than standard manga volume but honestly not much happens beyond the set up of the situation. It's not until the very last pages that something starts to happen and then of course the volume ends. I was debating not even finishing the volume but since comics read much faster than novels I decided to finish it. But definitely not continuing.
