After finishing the second 9 Of the Deadman series I think it's enough. I wound up with the first two for free. The stories are entertaining but the author has to throw in totally unneeded foul language and in this book additional descriptive Alex. Not needed either. There were also some pretty gruesome scenes in both books. All things considered, I won't be reading more of this series. They are okay but there are much better out there.
Let start with the potato famine in Ireland and the sadness derived from not having any food. How another country whose suppose to see you aid and they decide that your a bunch of lazy no counts who don't deserve to any type of aid so they cut it off and an entire country almost perish. No wonder Ireland wanted independence from England. The family O'Donnell wife and mother succumbed to cholera..Family sell everything they have for passage to United States. O'Donnell father finds work on the docks of NYC in a fish market..started feeling bad he also succumbed to lung disease(tuberculosis) which prevalent in the slums of NYC. No money, food and barely a place to live. The twins become involved in the criminal world. Eventually Maggie becomes a prostitute her brother a numbers runner, illegal street boxing. Her twin Paddy steals money and they take off to New Orleans, San Francisco then Washington state...(just a little background on the O'Donnell family) The Donnell twins become a very strong crime element in Washington area, kidnapping young women who are auctioned to the highest bidder. These buyers of human flesh come from all over the world to bid on these pitiful young girls who are used, abused and sometimes murdered. When the family O'Donnell arrived at Ellis Island, the 'O' was dropped by the clerk-this was done to a lot of immigrants entering th US thru Ellis Island had their names changed or altered. Marshall Wilcox niece was kidnapped by the Donnell twins and Marshall Wilcox goes on the hunt with the help of his deputies to locate his niece. This is another suspenseful adventure, dirty officials who accept bribes to look the other way while these kidnappings continue. Opiates use and the devastation that reeks on the body, soul and mind. There's psychopathic issues, which may have manifested from their childhood into adulthood which caused inhumane treatment to himself and anyone who got in his way. Another great series to enjoy and with that comes enlightenment of the human psyche and the treatment the different immigrants had to endure. This author touches your conscious and makes you aware in each book she writes.
This is the second book in the Deadman series and you really need to read the first one before tackling this one. This one will stand alone but if you read the first one you will be more emotionally attached to the characters and will have a better understanding of why they think/act the way they do. I liked this one better than the first because to me it seemed to have more suspense. Also, this one introduced a new character that I really like - "Dickie" - you cannot help but to feel sorry for him and like him at the same time. The ending is very suspenseful but it ends like all westerns should with the good guys winning and the bad guys dying. As to the author, she did a wonderful job with this book and I will stand by my comments made in my review of book one. One more book in this series, don't know when I will get to it but I plan to. One thing about these books is that it has made me curious about the author's other works when she is writing in her comfort zone and hits her stride I bet those are pretty good.
Book two in the Deadman’s series is another terrific book from Ms Jeppsen. As always with her writing I loved it and am never disappointed.
This book delves deeper into the lives of the characters in the story. Matthew and his deputies must race against time to rescue his wife’s niece Amelia Winters and the other young women who have been kidnapped to be sold into slavery and prostitution.
It is filled with mystery, intrigue and adventure. I highly recommend this book.
I won this book and got it in the mail 1/3/15. I finished the book 1/4/15. I quite enjoyed it. I haven't read a good western since Louis L'Amour died but this one held my attention well. I was a little sorry Ms.Jeppsen didn't incorporate much of the "wild west" in the book but I was surprised to enjoy it so much. I will definately read the other 2 books in the series. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book and to tell everyone how good it is.
I loved this book. It has everything - good cowboys, bad cowboys, good sheriffs, bad sheriffs, a kidnapping and a wonderful feel for the 1890's era. I fell in love with the hero sheriff who is hot on the trail of his kidnapped niece. Of course it's not easy and he encounters the bad cowboys I mentioned earlier. I'm not going to spoil the ending. Get this book and read it fast! Look forward to reading the other 'Dead Man' books by Linell Jepsen.
This the first book I have read by this author and found it to be a most enjoyable read. I didn't want to put it down as the storyline and characters captivated my interest. I am looking forward to reading another book by Linell Jeppsen and am excited to add another author to my reading list.
I really enjoyed it but parts of the main story seemed rushed. The tracking part of the story was minimal compared to Book One with Top Hat. OTOH, at times there was excessive back story, spending too much time explaining someone's non-essential past from years ago. Very good though but the first was indeed better.
This is the second story in Linell Jeppsen's western trilogy and it is a really exciting ride! Read Deadman's Lament first for the beginning of the story, then this one, and coming soon Deadman's Revenge for the exciting story of Matthew Wilcox. You're going to love it!!
This was a fast and very enjoyable read. I don't usually read westerns but am really glad that I ventured into the genre as this was really a standout book. I look forward to reading the others in the series.
I received a free copy of this book from the GoodReads First Reads giveaways in exchange for an honest review. Although I don't often read Westerns, this was a thoroughly enjoyable book. A fast read with an exciting plot.
Author Linell Jeppsen blended the best elements of a great western with a great mystery to create one of the best stories ever! Evidently, as author of other style novels, Jeppsen demonstrated her versatility.
Often the sequel is not as good as the first. But not in this case. It's a good book set in the 1800's. But could just as easily been in the 21st century. Read it and see if you agree.
