I really really can't recommend this series enough. I don't have much to say that's different from my reviews of the other volumes I've read. Beautiful artwork, intriguing characters, wonderful plot... and it's nice that it's not moving along so slowly that you lose interest. You get interesting tidbits about new characters and you get to see a slightly different side of Emma this volume.

If you're having trouble getting into other manga, but you're still interested in the medium, Emma may be an excellent gateway manga.

Volume three manages to hols onto the momentum of the fantastic story Mori has developed in the previous two volumes. I love the attention to detail in the illustrations (the boating scene is particularly well-done), the characters and the way the characters relate to one another. This is a great addition to any manga collection (I have yet to see any other manga series tackle a non-Asian historical setting (doesn't mean there isn't one ... I just haven't heard about it...)) and one that will definitely please even non-manga historical fiction fans.

Emma has left London, and Wiliam, far behind. On the train she meets a fellow maid named Tasha. Tasha tells her that the mansion she currently works at is looking for help. Emma agrees to apply, and is shortly given a trial position in the house. It is very different from Emma's previous post, with rules about which brushes you apply polish with (for example), a much more formal maid outfit, very segregated classes and genders, with a German family as masters. She is forced to learn quickly, but that's all to the good because it helps her forget about William....

Meanwhile, William is determined to become the perfect aristocrat. If class is so important, then he is going to accept every single invitation and throw himself into the role of being an upstanding young lord. He might even entertain the attentions of Eleanor...

This series just gets better and better. I love the details and the whole vibe of it. Also the drawing style and the characters are on point. I can't wait for the next one to be at my libary so I can pick it up.

Hope to read this and #4 and then be done with these. Very confused by story which goes between Emma and her Beau and his mother and her relationship with his father and these other people in the past and present and who is who. Will try another graphic novel, but this one I had high hopes for. Too many plots on different chapters. Not much continuity. Still like the concept.

Emma learns how to be her own person and catches the eye of another coworker. It's slow and adorable and SC needs to get the rest of the series in their library system.

Recommended 9+ for previous romance and drunk coworkers.

I said of the first book, I'm really looking for a slice of life, and here it is. Yay!

Emma gets chatted up by a maid on the train, gets an interview and a job in that household, since they're short on staff, and starts settling into a new life right away. So quickly that she doesn't have time to process the changes; I'm sure anyone who's ever moved for a job or a partner knows the feeling. But she applies herself to learning her new duties, and does okay. It's good work for a quiet, shy, studious person, and it's obvious that she tries to be sociable, it's just hard for her.

While we're treated to lush art of a beautiful indoor garden, a raucous party, and busy kitchen.

There's a reverse bechdel fail where the ladies also fail: In the two chapters he has, William can't do anything but moon over Emma, talks of nothing else with Hakim, while the ladies talk of nothing but the guys (including William). It's such an effete contrast to the rest of the book. Meanwhile Emma has way too much to worry about in her busy new life, save a few pangs.

I really appreciate the lack of drama and the focus on regular life. It's so obvious what an Anglophile the author is, and I'm very happy that she's both excited to share all the cool things she loves and is meticulous about getting them right.

This exchange is also hilarious: (right to left)

“Emma” is a manga about a maid and an upper class gentleman who fall in love and have to fight the Victorian class system to be together. It is a traditional romance narrative, with warm characters and a rollercoaster plot line.
I decided to read this series because I wanted to take a break from hard reading, with some light graphic novels. I was drawn to this series because it is set in the Victorian era, which is one of my favourite historical settings.
“Emma” is a sweet story. The writing, however, I found was a little quirky. It seemed that the writing would suddenly stop, without revealing everything. For example, a character would be telling a joke, I’d flip the page, and the scene would be completely changed. This also happened when a character was retelling something, when a character was revealing something, and at random times throughout the dialogue and narrative. I found it disruptive and frustrating.
The other irksome part I found about “Emma” is in the number of books included in the series. The main narrative runs from book one to, and including, book seven. Books eight, nine, and ten are not part of the main narrative, but are instead made up of short stories about the other characters in the series. This is a sweet idea, but I do not like this to be included in the main series. It should have been added as additional material, or as a separate, sub-series.
The overall story was alright. I have too much to read that I probably will not read the short stories that are included in the series. “Emma” fulfilled its purpose of giving me a break from hard reading.

A good continuation to the story to see Emma and William’s lives without each other for a bit.

I liked Emma’s half of the story way more than William’s. I found his parts a little boring (but I feel like maybe that’s the point because he is forcing himself into that life but it’s boring for him too). I actually had a tough time telling all of the people apart during the boating scenes. It’s also a little weird that Hakim is still around but doesn’t contribute much to the story… he just sits around like set dressing.

I liked the twist/surprise at the end. I can’t believe I hadn’t even thought of the fact that William’s mom wasn’t around. I guess I’m so used to Disney movies with missing moms that it didn’t even occur to me that she’d never shown her!

She seems like an interesting character and look like Emma might be lucky to get his mom on her side, but that might actually end up being worse for her since it seems like his parents are on the outs. I’m eager to see how all that plays out.

3.75/5

In this volume we see William and Emma trying to live their lives apart. William seems to have become the perfect son and aristocrat. It’s only to his friend Hakim that he admits to wanting to take control of the family and then tear it all down.

I found this selfish of William at first until I realized how trapped he is.

For Emma an encounter with another maid on the train leads her to work for a German family in a large mansion outside of England. Emma is at first overwhelmed by the large staff but her hard work makes her a favorite .

So much so that she is headed back to London with the family for a social event.

This volume shows a nice contrast in how William is doing versus how Emma is doing, after the pair ended missing each other and Emma moved away.
While William seems to be overworking himself by navigating social events for the rest of the upper-class elites, Emma gained new employment in a rather lively mansion. It was lovely seeing all the unique characters that Emma will be working with, while also a bit sad seeing William having to put on an act for others in his social class. Although, it was comforting to see that William’s eldest sister: Grace, seemingly know that something was off with her brother.

Definitely enjoyed this one much more than the first (two) volumes. Volume 3 introduced the final of the major characters and volume four had such a wonderful build-up to the meeting of Emma and William that I was telling myself to stop speed reading and appreciate the art. This is just such a good, familiar, simple story. I loved meeting the new family. I loooove Dorothea. The art is still amazingly detailed and lovely.

Very good times all around.

Emma finds a new family to work for and William tries to fit into his gentleman niche.

I love the idea of this story - maid and lord find true love- but I'm a bit thrown at this volume. It veers between Emma beginning work with a new family and William working hard and accepting every invitation to parties that are sent to him. It's a tad too much filler for me. I still enjoyed spending time with Emma and plan to read the fourth volume.

As this romance gets more and more complicated, with Emma and William being pushed away from each other by the world and seemingly fate, Emma must move to find new work. As this is a manga, with detailed art from the talented and hardworking Kaoru Mori, there is a lot of detail and historical weight carried from the backdrops and scenery alone which can teach and immerse a student wanting to learn more about Victorian era England even more.

Downton Abbey meets manga... In this volume, Emma has left London and found work with a new family after her old employer passed away. The new family comes from Germany and is "new money," trying to fit in with the English upper class society. Emma is learning to find her place in a large household after being the only maid and servant for her old employer.

This really shows the differences and change of pace that Emma steps into with a large work force that she is unused to. It is a good book with a really clear distinguish from when different languages are being spoken. It is amazing to see the difference in people when they are trying to hide from pain!
