This book integrates the Enneagram and the gospel-centered approach the McCords are known for with Internal Family Systems (IFS) in a way that brings light and life to the many parts of our type.

With a grace-filled approach to your type, this book guides readers through identifying, naming, and working with more than "just your number" to access the many other resources available to each of us. Filled with scripture, personal stories from the authors, friends, and clients, it provides clear and practical ways to navigate our inner world with a fuller awareness of our core motivations.

Whether you're still trying to figure out your Enneagram type or have been "doing the work" for years, this book will provide a fresh approach to make it applicable for you everyday life. If you've known your type but never really knew what to do with it, this book is for you. Rather than simply helping to narrow down and identify your type, it opens up the challenge to be so much More Than Your Number.

More Than Your Number by Jeff and Beth McCord brings a new and fresh perspective to the Enneagram with the Enneagram Internal Profile. No matter your level of Enneagram knowledge or whether you have used it in your own personal growth, More Than Your Number will help you understand why some times part of you thinks or wants to do one thing while another wants the opposite. You’ll gain more understanding as to why some situations and experiences cause you stress or trigger inner wounds that you can’t seem to get past. The awareness it brings to your understanding of yourself can help in so many ways. I’m already seeing the fruit of understanding myself through the Enneagram Internal Profile as I navigate difficult situations in my job. It has helped me understand more about myself while keeping more conscious of the truth that I am God’s beloved child.

I was drawn to this book after listening to an episode of the authors’ podcast. I liked some of their interpretations of the enneagram and that they come to it from a Christ-focused perspective. I had forgotten that I’d read their book Becoming Us and was disappointed by it. I had the same frustrations with this book. The information about the enneagram is buried under many stories from the authors' lives and they would have been well served by a ghost writer. I did not finish it. Goodreads rating: 2 stars (It was ok.)

I received an ARC from NetGalley. The book will be released on September 20, 2022.

More Than Your Number is a good introduction to the enneagram for Christians. It covers the strengths and weaknesses of each personality number. Beth and Jeff also share how God created each of us differently but how the enneagram can help us understand ourselves and how to interact with others. I enjoyed learning more about the enneagram and how to apply it with a Christian lens. I also appreciated the companion graphs and resources.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion.

I am not one to DNF a book, but I had to with this. I have tried over and over to get through this book (several months in fact), and I just could not get into it.

I originally requested this book because I have an interest in the enneagram, but specifically from a Godly perspective. As a result, I have read several books on this particular subject that were incredible. Pastor Matthew (Matt) Brown’s book specifically is phenomenal.

Unfortunately, I found this book to be extremely confusing. I felt the authors over complicated this topic. In addition to over complicating things I felt the book suggested using outside resources too much. What is the point of constantly requiring the reader to defer to outside websites? If they wanted to do so, it should have been marketed as a workbook or companion guide.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Helpful tool for growth

In More Than a Number, Jeff and Beth McCord go beyond Enneagram types to how to use the information provided by the Enneagram to grow. This book is a good introduction to the Enneagram Internal Profile and better understanding the “fog” created by all of the parts of us that fight to protect what Jeff and Beth call the “Wounded Child.”

This is a helpful book for those familiar with the Enneagram but wanting to lean deeper into what transformational growth will look like with a heavy reliance on Christian faith as the catalyst for change. The book comes with helpful visuals to explain the concepts.

This book gives you information, but the answers will come from reflection. It was helpful to keep a journal nearby where I could work through naming some of my own internal profile as I read. This will be a book I’ll return to often for my own growth and helping others through theirs.

This book is tremendously helpful because it explains the enneagram from a distinctively Christian perspective. One of the biggest ways that this shifts how I talk about the enneagram is by leading to asking the question of in what ways am I aligned or misaligned with the gospel. It also helps me to ask particular questions in light of the acronym AWARE. I’m extremely thankful to Jeff and Beth for this book and would highly recommend it!

In More Than Your Number, Beth and Jeff McCord come alongside each of us and offer a path for growth, hope and transformation in our lives. Think back to a time where you felt stuck in life, or triggered, upset, angry, hurt… reading their new book offers practical steps and tools to unpack the enneagram and better understand your own unique EIP (Enneagram Internal Profile). Bring healing to wounded parts from your past, along with negative thought patterns, in order to become the healthiest version of yourself. “These internal fights and dialogues can wreak havoc within my soul, this chaos often spills over into the ways I relate to others, I get frustrated with this internal tug-of-war between so many parts…false messages impede my growth…they shape how I relate to others and to myself and they keep me stuck in the fog, yet when my internal parts are aligned with the gospel, I experience peace and confidence” (McCord, More Than Your Number).
Beth and Jeff McCord’s vulnerability in sharing parts of their own story, along with lessons they have learned by developing the individualized EIP, brings great clarity and discernment for our own lives. You don’t want to miss More Than Your Number- it is transformational! You will not want to put this book down, you will go back to reread again and again, to apply strategies and principles to your own life and relationships, that can unleash your full potential. Learn about your unique strengths and passions- your internal parts are like a family and they ask this key question, are you being led by the ‘wounded’ or ‘beloved’ part?’ Explore unique parts of you and how they can best work together: Principled Reformer, Nurturing Supporter, Admirable Achiever, Introspective Individualist, Analytical Investigator, Faithful Guardian, Enthusiastic Optimist, Passionate Protector, Peaceful Accommodator. Imagine a key being given to you to unlock unleashed potential. Limitless possibilities await, don’t miss More Than Your Number!

Loved this book- learning more about our different emotional parts because the enneagram can get tiresome with the memes & stuff that put you a box. I love that they describe how individualized your personality is & dive deeper into wing’s & enneagram paths. The beloved child & misaligned parts were so good to learn about too! Lots of good nuggets & tons of highlights for me!

As a certified enneagram coach, I am always looking for new books and tools to help clients understand their enneagram numbers and how to use that wisdom in their everyday lives. I often use Beth McCord’s work in my coaching, as I appreciate her consistent approach to teaching the enneagram through a Gospel-centered lens of transformation.

This new book, More Than Your Number: A Christ-Centered Enneagram Approach to Becoming A.W.A.R.E. of Your Inner World, reflects what I have come to expect from Beth & Jeff McCord - practical enneagram wisdom and a pastoral heart for encouraging others. In parts 1 & 2, the authors provide a theological basis for enneagram work and unpack the wounded child parts of our nature from our identity as Christ’s beloved. Based in scripture and in personal stories, the authors make a compelling case of the purpose and value of enneagram work to Christians who may be skeptical of it. These sections may be less relevant for those already familiar with enneagram work or less interested in their philosophical underpinnings. Skim if you must, but don’t skip them. There is a richness in the personal stories that Beth and Jeff share that bring to life the value of understanding the different aspects of our personalities and how leaning into that work can transform our lives and everyday relationships. They show that enneagram work is deeply spiritual work.

The practicality of this book, though, is in Part 3, where the authors lay out the EIP, enneagram internal profiles, of different numbers and show readers how these different parts of us can show up in healthy or unhealthy ways. The reflection questions here are valuable exercises for all of us in becoming A.W.A.R.E. of our tendencies and allowing God to transform us from the inside out.

I will reference this book regularly with clients, in helping them understand the different dynamics of their personalities and developing the awareness necessary to embrace their identity as God’s beloved.

I received an advance copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I chose to review this book out of curiosity. I have seen 2 Enneagram books in my Christian Books category, so I thought, "Why not." I read them both, as much as I possible could stomach. I am finished reading ALL Enneagram books, and as much as they are grouped as "Christian Books", the Enneagram books are far from Christian beliefs. One book showed me it seemed wrong to call it Christian. This book validated the fact that Enneagrams are not at all intertwined with true Christian beliefs.

This was an long, drawn out explanation of life situations, and validations of behavior, based off being a "6 or a 9" on the Enneagram. Actions are not automatically made based off some man-made numbering system. You cannot blame a reaction or habit on a number, by saying "it's because I am a 6". WHAT? You are not a Christian author if you make bad choices and blame them on a number system of behaviors. Behaviors are chosen by each individual. We are all given free will to choose each action we make each and every day. There is not invisible number God puppeteering your every move, and removing your freedom to choose an action, because #9 is ruling you. It doesn't work that way.

It is time for people to step up and take control of their choices, both good and bad and realize the only thing making them act a certain way is them, not a number, a number system, or some test that told them they are a certain way because they are this "number type". You are human, given the free will of God to choose right or wrong, so stop blaming some invisible number patterns for your behavior. Trying to spread the word of numerology incorporated with God is not a good choice. Anyone who wants to read this has the free will to do so, but I hope they take responsibility for the choice to read instead of blaming a number type for their action.

I do NOT recommend this book to any Christian reader. I do NOT recommend this book being categorized under Christianity, either.

I have been following Beth (yourenneagramcoach) for a few years now and have learned so much from her on something that has Changed my life for the better. The tool of the Enneagram is something that has been so very helpful to my growth and healing in my life. What I appreciate the most about Beth and Jeff's perspective of the enneagram is that they focus highly on the way the Gospel can be the main focus and the Enneagram the sidekick. That is why I will continue to follow them and their work over some others. The Gospel will always be #1 in my life.

When I started this book it felt a bit slow. (That's why it is a 4 star for me) I do typically love extra stories from the writers that give us more detail on their lives and their history. I like details. I was in this case a lot more "ready" for what this book was about and got a bit bored waiting for the book to give me what I was expecting in the title. For a beginner that doesn't know much about the enneagram the speed of this book may have been more fitting. But for someone who has done more work learning about it over some time, they may feel more like I did.

Part 3 is where I wanted to skip to (maybe I just should have) where they explained the EIP (Enneagram Internal Profiles). They do a great job laying out the differences in healthy or unhealth. I do like that they stay true to the fact that they do want to encourage us to let God be the one to transform us.

I would recommend this book to a friend. Especially one that hasn't done much Enneagram work. Perfect for a beginner, but there is still great things for a more "seasoned" Enneagram fan, I'd just give the disclaimer that they may want to jump ahead. When I am recommending anything Enneagram to a friend this book will be higher on my list because of the Gospel Focus.

I was happy to receive an advanced copy through NetGalley and was asked to give my honest feedback.

I’m fairly new to the enneagram so More Than Your Number is of high interest to me, especially since it’s written from a Christian perspective. I’ve heard people say they don’t like the enneagram because it labels or stereotypes people, but the way Jeff and Beth McCord present it, I see it as an incredible tool to understand why I (type 9) make (or don’t make) decisions. One concern I had initially is that individuals can use it merely as a “self-help” book and not really allow the Holy Spirit to do His work. I love how the McCords emphasize the work of the Holy Spirit in changing and guiding us. When we are aware that we are heading in an unhealthy direction, we can pick up on the signs and then recognize what’s going on internally. Now we can ask “the Holy Spirit to take over our hearts and renew our minds”. I love the titles “Beloved Child” and “Wounded Child”. They are used throughout and perfectly describe our heart attitudes and mindsets when we are, as the Apostle Paul describes, “walking in the Spirit” or not.

Some people use the enneagram to excuse sinful, wrong behavior and choices. The McCords do not shy away from the fact that we have a sinful, fallen nature and we make our own choices. From the outset, they recognize that “we are born into fallenness. And along the way, we each choose sinfulness.” Their approach to the enneagram does not allow us the excuse “well, that’s just the way I am…”. They also offer hope and remind us that “we are invited to be included in this ongoing process of redemption.” By relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can make good decisions.

I recommend More Than Your Number to anyone who is interested in moving beyond the stereotypes of the enneagram and recognizing who they are in Christ and how that affects our relationships with others.

As a Christian Enneagram Coach, this book is a phenomenal resource to me! I'm already using this Enneagram Internal Profile language and construct within my practice and it is helping my clients grasp a more in depth and wider understanding of themselves.

This book, More Than Your Number, breaks down the beauty of the gospel from Genesis to the Ascension of Jesus while providing a road map to growth by the Spirit of God through the helpful use of the tool of the Enneagram. You will discover in these pages that God deposited divine and eternal longings into your heart with the promise of fully satisfying them! Beth and Jeff offer vulnerability in these pages, they unapologetically profess the name of Jesus and His redemption, and teach us how to bring all of our parts to Him to let Him be the one that satisfies the very longings He deposited within us.

More Than Your Number is more than just a good read, it is a profound resource for growth! It is filled with incredible content for each Type. Beth and Jeff break down what it looks like for each Type to operate as the Beloved Child and Wounded Child. But they take it even further and give specifics on what it looks like to have your connecting parts operating under the leadership of each child.

You don't need to be an Enneagram expert to read this book. In fact, More Than Your Number lays out the principles of the powerful tool of the Enneagram in a way that anyone could grasp and begin their own journey toward self-awareness. But what I love the most is that Jesus is always at the center of the McCord's teachings. It is obvious that they have decided that Jesus is not a problem, but rather, He is the answer.

If you are ready to grow, order your copy today!

Beth and Jeff McCord have written a valuable resource for putting the enneagram to practical application toward personal growth and maturity. They begin with the premise that we are all made up of various ‘parts’. Not just our primary enneagram type, but also the wings and paths of that Enneagram type. In discussing these different aspects of who we are, the McCords stress that a person’s view of the world and their place in it are critical to how they will relate to God, others, and themselves. When we are aligned with the truth of the gospel, our behavior will reflect that of a ‘Beloved Child’ of God. When we are out of alignment with the gospel, we will behave in ways that are more indicative of brokenness. They call this the ‘Wounded Child’.

But Beth and Jeff don’t just leave you there! They have outlined a process by which a person can become more aware of exactly what is happening within themselves, so that they can recognize areas where they are living outside of God’s perfect truth and make the necessary adjustments in order to live a more joyful and fruitful life completely surrendered to God, impacting those around them in beautiful ways.

My favorite part of the book was where the McCords recommended that I name each of the aspects of my personality so that I can more effectively address them and coach them toward Christ! It was so eye-opening. And it’s been transformative to have a more effective way to direct my internal self-talk.

This is a book with the potential to revolutionalize your life and relationships!

A Practical and Gospel-Centered Growth Tool

I'm a certified Enneagram Coach and have read many great books on the Enneagram; I love that this one has a new perspective. More Than Your Number is a fresh take on the Enneagram, as it introduces the Enneagram Internal Profile. Beth and Jeff McCord believe in the gospel of God's grace and continually call the reader back to living as the Beloved Child of the Father. If you're looking for a deeper understanding of who and Whose you are this is the book for you! This book reveals the various parts of our heart and how they get stuck when we live as the Wounded Child. The Enneagram Internal Profile is a new way of understanding our inner world. The focus is on becoming AWARE of these parts, so we can shepherd and lead these parts of our heart. There is a great mix of personal stories and practical information. I recommend this book to both Enneagram newbies and enthusiasts alike. I loved the scripture references and the call to speak the Gospel to myself. The key takeaway for me is to make every effort to live as the Father's Beloved Child and become more AWARE when I'm not. I am fearfully and wonderfully complex and More Than My Number (Enneagram Type 2)! If you're looking to grow in grace for yourself and others, this is your book!

As someone who has been studying and trying to understand the Enneagram, this book has been so helpful for that journey!

As a follower of Christ, it helps having someone write from the same perspective. But that doesn’t detract from the fact that this book could help you on your Enneagram journey, whether you’re a Christian or not.

I enjoyed learning about Beth and Jeff’s individual stories and how they encountered this Enneagram Internal Profile (EIP) in their study and experience teaching and applying the tools the Enneagram. (It helped me see I share a similar experience with Beth as a fellow type 9!)

When they talk about seeing each part of yourself with compassion and empathy, it helps us on that journey to self-awareness and self-love that many of us are missing.

The charts and explanations at the end of the book are also super helpful and give great insights to how each of us will have a different experience, not only compared to others types, but even within our own type.

I highly recommend this for any seasoned Enneagram vet or a person who is just starting the Enneagram journey. Go grab a copy for you AND your friends!

More than a Number describes the stunning inner complexity of every person on planet earth. The various Enneagram types provide a framework that reveals the individual strengths—the beloved child—and weaknesses—the wounded child—of each type. The McCord’s suggest using biblical truths to realign our responses to the issues in question. Understanding ourselves ultimately leads to the ability to self-coach and lead our “wounded child” parts into healthy alignment and spiritual health.

I had a basic understanding of the Enneagram when I heard about this book, but I lacked an understanding of the Enneagram from an evangelical Christian viewpoint. I was drawn to the system of self-examination suggested in the book as a kind of spiritual discipline.

I recommend this book to Christ-followers who want to improve self-understanding as well as understanding the strengths and weaknesses of other people in their lives. If done conscientiously and consistently, it results in healthy self-development as well as in relationships with others.

Yes, I am more than a Type 2. This book reveals the things I am lacking - are all found through the provision Jesus Christ has provided. He will never leave me or forsake me. I can trust Him to tell me the truth, always love me, acknowledge me and give me assurance.
Type 2 is always trying to help people and gain praise - sometimes overstepping their boundaries to get some attention. God sent Jesus to the cross because I had his attention as a sinner.
This book has allowed growth, clarity and inner strength I have been missing. Knowing your type, triggers, and your strengths, gives you the tools to build a better life for you and the people you come in contact with.
This book will help you no matter what number you have been labeled with. Overcoming your number and being the person that Jesus has already provided for you. Knowing Him in a Deeper way and growing Spiritually. Read it and you will understand how to be an overcomer of your type. I will read again.

More than your number is an excellent resource for taking the enneagram beyond just an interesting idea and into deeper life change. Through a comprehensive overview of the enneagram as well as detailed descriptions of each type and how our internal world moves through our different parts, we have language to help us become “AWARE” of, and then gently guide ourselves through to an aligned place of belovedness.

This is an important book within the enneagram community because it helped me to uncover a deeper process going on inside
Me, one that goes beyond information. It offers me a path and an invitation to name my parts, accept them and guide them.

If you’re a seasoned enneagram person you can probably skim parts of the beginning but it is a book I know I will return to consistently as I begin to use this process of self discovery, as well as a helpful tool for my enneagram coaching business.

More Than Your Number by Jeff and Beth McCord offers another layer to of understanding the Enneagram and how your type interacts with your other types that show up in woundedness or belovedness. I chose this book because I've been familiar the Ennegram for years, and wanted to dive deeper into understanding why I relate so and react so much to/from other types that in seasons.

Jeff and Beth McCord's book have me more understanding and language around why some situations and experiences cause stress or trigger inner wounds that I can’t seem to move past. My biggest takeaway is having a better understanding of how much understanding I'm God's beloved can impact how I show up fully as the healthy version of me.

It did take a long time to get through this book, and felt a little heady and complex at times. I would recommend it as 'advance reading', for someone who already has a good understanding of the Enneagram basics and Christian perspective.

"False messages often derail us, leaving us lost in the fog of our familiar circumstances and reactions. To become healthier and more like Christ, we must become aware of these false messages, turn from them, and live in gospel truth instead."

Beth and Jeff McCord have written a book that connects the Enneagram and the gospel in a life-giving, transformational way. By understanding ourselves better, we can become aware of areas in our lives where we are misaligned with the gospel. But, we don't have to remain stuck there! It is Christ who transforms us, not the Enneagram. The tools of the Enneagram found in this book are like rumble strips on a highway and alert us when we are veering off course. By remembering and focusing on the truth of our identity in Christ, we can allow him to transform us from the inside out.

Some books you like, some you don’t finish; but the books we typically love meet us right where we are. More Than Your Number has met me where I am, filled me with encouragement, and helped to reorient my perspective. The McCord’s unique perspective, that keeps pointing us back to Christ, is what makes this book about the Enneagram and EIP so refreshing and profound. Beth reminds us how most of us would rather create a list of activities to try harder at fixing ourselves, but it is the kindness, patience, and mercy of our Savior that changes us. If you have ever found loving a certain part of yourself difficult or been frustrated trying to get along with a challenging person, I think this book may find a permanent and referenced place on your shelf. Thank You Beth and Jeff for sharing how the gospel looks from the perspective of The Beloved Child.

I’ve been familiar with the enneagram for years, but I’ve not tapped into a lot of resources for understanding it better. So this is the first book about the enneagram that I’ve picked up, and Beth and Jeff McCord have done an incredible job here of positioning the gospel as a framework for coaching around the enneagram.

While there were moments when I felt that the content was a little repetitive, I think they were endeavoring to make sure that all types were thoroughly addressed from all angles. I deeply appreciated the time they spent relaying each of their individual perspectives and sharing their journeys (and obstacles) to growth.

I know that I will dig into this book again in the future. It was equally challenging and encouraging, and I’m positive that it will be a powerful resource in helping Christians better communicate the gospel through our relationships.

This is a very vulnerable, raw exploration of our inner world and how we can learn to speak to the Gospel to ourselves. Using multiple perspectives, Beth and Jeff have teamed up to answer the question of why we forget what is true about ourselves and need reminders of who we really are. For both novices and Enneagram enthusiasts alike, this book will teach you about the Enneagram Internal Profile and how to be more 'aware' of what is going on inside of you. There are many wonderful things to walk away from with this book, but the real gem is that the Gospel has so much to offer each type, far more than the Enneagram ever could. This is a must read for anyone wanting to explore more layers of the Enneagram from a Gospel perspective.

I am a big fan of anything enneagram, and I really enjoyed the approach the McCords' used in this book. I think they did a wonderful job of bridging the gap between the Gospel and enneagram. I know in the Christian world people are cautious and sometimes afraid the enneagram will lead to too much self discovery. I would disagree, and truly believe that in order to be aligned with Christ we must know ourselves. It means knowing we are His, and understanding how He designed our internal world. I appreciated how this book dives into discovering our internal world, and breaks down what that will look like on a broad level for each type. This is a great book for any level of enneagram knowledge.
I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

I’m so grateful for the insights the Enneagram has for my personality. It helps me understand my children and others better too. This book is unique among the other books I’ve read on the Enneagram because it affirms your personality traits according to your identity in Christ. I like how the book talks about how a wounded child version of each number will handle the highs and lows differently than someone who accepts their identity as a beloved child of God. It gives each of us something to consider on how we can use the enneagram to connect deeper with God and also grow to be more like Christ in our unique giftings. Lots of practical application at the end of each chapter.

Surprisingly, there is a fresh approach to the Enneagram! The McCords have written an engaging and practical (think LESS jargon-y) way to understand the Enneagram. It resonates with me as I've read several books on the topic, but was pleasantly refreshed to read the reminder that changing isn't "all up to me"! As a Christ-follower, I know my limits and know the power to change doesn't rest with me. Thank, GOD! For a fresh perspective, practical application, and directed spiritual reliance "More Than Your Number" is a balanced reminder that we ARE holistic, made of many parts, with a core in Christ.
