Ruby and the Huntsman of Midnight is the second book in the series, Midnight Tales by Susan Ee.  The Midnight Tales takes well known characters from fairytales and gives their story a twist. Ruby and the Huntsman of Midnight is a reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood. All of the stories in this series are pretty self-contained and while you could read them independently there is enough of a crossover of plots that I think it is better to read them in order to get the full effect.

Ruby has been held captive in the Midnight Castle for a while. She was trained well by her Grandmother who fought in war with the Fae and that has kept her alive. When the Huntsman sees Ruby, he is amazed that a slip of a girl has survived in the dungeons for so long and takes her to use as bait in a different kind of hunt. Hopefully the girl with the beautiful red hair and way with animals will survive the challenges he is going to make her face.

This is an interesting dark world where the Fae and Humans seem to be in a holding pattern after a war. The humans are currently losing though as nights become longer as the years go by. Much longer and the entire land will be trapped in darkness. The King is just as dark and twisted as the land and the last person you want to notice you. Soon the Huntsman will need to pick between the King and the job his family has done for centuries or Ruby.

I liked the first book in this series just a little more. I liked Ruby and wanted her to find a way back to her grandmother. But some of the story needed a little more fleshing out for my tastes and the romance between Ruby and Tyler (the Huntsman) happened rather quickly. I’m also a little confused as to where the arc with the King is going. Is he evil or is he training his people for the war to come with the monthly hunts? Still the reimagining was interesting and I did like how the Wolf posing as Grandma played out.

If you like your fairytales a little darker and are a big fan of re-imaginings this could work for you.
“I’m not a child anymore.”

“Every child thinks that. The way to tell if your childhood is over is if you start to miss it instead of being smug about having outgrown it. When that happens, then you’ll know it’s over.”

Narration:
Caitlin Davies narrated all of the Penryn & the End of Days books.  I’ve enjoyed her performances and this was no exception. She brought the characters to life and made it easy to get drawn into the story.

If this series keeps improving with each new title I will be a happy fan.

“Ruby and the Huntsman of Midnight” follows Ruby who has been held prisoner in the castle since the events of book 1 when she is faced with a wolf like creature called a howler who is thrown into her cell to kill her, but when she survives she’s recruited by the Huntsman to be bait as they hunt the wolfkin for the Dark King’s army.

So one of my biggest issues with the first book was how quickly it wrapped up and to some extent this book followed that pattern but it managed to leave it with a cliffhanger that acts as a springboard for this brewing conflict against the dark king that Cinder and Dante did not.

There’s a lot more whispering of an upcoming war and rebellion which I enjoyed and the subtle recruitment of any souls under the King’s employ is always something I enjoy because it sets up a great moment where the oppressed rise up and I look forward to seeing that play out in the future. There were some moments that were just okay or that didn’t make a lot of sense which again mostly falls to the world as we were introduced to it in the first book that seems to be rewritten slightly in order to make this story work and though it’s obvious enough to be noticeable it didn’t bother me as much as I expected.

I’m starting to find more hope in this series as they move forward and I’m really hoping it’s not a fluke but if it is at least let the covers get better.

In Ruby & the Huntsman of Midnight, I fell more and more in love with this twisted world. It showed the good and the bad on both sides of impending war in a way I could not stop my thoughts from coming up with different scenarios of what could happen next.

Another solid read from Susan Ee. Giving it four stars since I didn’t like the romance, but maybe with further development of the series I might be more accepting. I enjoyed the world much more now that’s I’m a bit familiar. Can’t wait for the revolution to continue.

---

This is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with a darker twist and I have mixed feelings.

Overall, I like the concept and how it evolved but somehow it was very hard to reach the end -I was stopping every 20 percent because I was losing interest-.

There is a Grandmother who fought in the war with the Fae, a pack of werewolves, an army of Huntsman, and a crazy King. A lot of concepts that work perfectly but even if the plot moves fast, something in the structure kept dragging this book for me.

At some point, the plot became predictable but our heroine, Ruby, it's interesting enough -especially when teams up with Shadow-.
On the romance side, it was okay, the Hunstman it's a good romantic interest even if the development was a little rushed.

I like it but on paper, I should love it and it wasn't the case.

Ruby and The Huntsman is the second stand-alone installment in the Midnight Tales series. The first book which was a dark Cinderella retelling was a huge disappoint for me. I pretty much lowered my expectations before getting into this one. The book was set in the same world, but the characters were different. It was a unique take on the Red Riding Hood and it features Silver's(from the first book) granddaughter Ruby.

Ruby was a prisoner in the Dark Kings castle. She was kept in the dungeons along with the other prisoners. When a rabid howler was sent into her cell, surprisingly she survives, but the howler is dead. When Huntsman meets Ruby, he can't believe that she killed a huge howler, a wolf like monster. He recruits her into his team and trains her. He wants to use Ruby as a bait for the wolfkin, so that he could hunt them down. As the Dark King’s Huntsman, Tyler will do whatever it takes to complete his mission because the consequences would be his death because the Dark King never gives a second chance.

Ruby was a heroine with strong determination. She'll do anything to escape her prison. When the Huntsman offers her a deal, she couldn't say no because it's the only chance for her freedom. She doesn't trust him, but she really likes to prove herself strong. Huntsman aka Tyler was a broody guy with cold personality. The only one close to being his friend was his dog named Shadow. He trains Ruby very hard and he often scolds her when she makes mistakes. This guy is so infuriating, but I can understand his desperation. The romance in this book is very light.  The relationship between Ruby and Huntsman is pretty much a slow burn. I wish there was more interactions between them. The secondary characters were just okay, they're not memorable enough to describe.

The plot was interesting but don't expect for anything extraordinary. It's pretty much a fast read and you might find some parts rushed. While some of the twists were predictable, some of them were hard to guess. I enjoyed the team up of Shadow and Ruby. Together they're pretty awesome. The ending was a little rushed. It would've been great if the author slowed down a bit. The writing was okay. The book was told in dual POV's. The world building was good, but I wish there was more details. I'm already familiar with it so it's easier to grasp everything.

Overall, I liked it! I can't say it was the best, but it was definitely much better than the first one. I'll look forward to the next book.

Recommend it?

Review:

It was a really good story and the plot was very interesting.

What really confused and a little annoyed me was the combination of the personality of the h. Yes, she was really kick ass and gave bad bitch vibes but was very naive and sheltered. She was more of a gentle soul and was more ashamed of her skills. It isn't a bad thing but her lack of confidence was a little annoying also because it doesn't change throughout the book.

The H had his reasons to become a hunter but his continuous battle and his motivation to keep the training he was taught was never explained. Yes, it was said that he lost his humanity to the job of being the huntsman but his constant scolding to himself was a little sad to read. What was annoying about him was the expectations he held to the h. He expected too much of her and when she couldn't perform what he wanted, he scolded and reprimanded her even when it was misplaced and he knew it wasn't her fault.

The story in general, in my opinion, was too shortly structured. If anything, it could be easily made into a movie without having to leave out details. I wish the story was longer and the world of this novel was more explored.

Ruby & the Huntsman of Midnight is dark, twisted and different. After being captured during the Hunt, Ruby will do anything to escape the infamous dungeons of Midnight Castle. However, in order to get back to the safety of her grandmother’s house, she’ll need to outrun the hunters and monsters alike through the deadly forest. As the Dark King’s Huntsman, Tyler will do whatever it takes to complete his mission, even if it means using an innocent teenage girl as prey to do it. In the dark and twisted kingdom and the dark forest, even the unnatural will seem like the impossible. Ruby & the Huntsman of Midnight is filled with secrets, shock, action, dark scenes, some romance and different.

After being captured during the Hunt, Ruby is being held prisoner within the Dark King’s infamous dungeons, dreaming of a way to return to her grandmother’s house. However, she is not alone in the dungeons and thanks to her grandmother’s training Ruby is able to defend herself against a wolf like creature but gained the attention of Tyler the Dark King’s Huntsman. Seeing her fight, Tyler plans to use Ruby as prey to capture wolfkin for the Dark King’s army. If Tyler doesn’t succeed, he’ll face the consequences. Ruby trains with Tyler and once she was ready to go hunting she being separated from the group only to discover a secret that her grandmother has been searching for her along with a pack of wolfkin. Ruby learns one shocking truth after another from the pack and agrees to help them free those within the castle. However, she must play a dangerous game with the hunters and Tyler in order to complete her mission.

Ruby is a tough girl thanks to her grandmother’s training and all she wants is to escape her prison and go back to her grandmother. I do like her. The grandmother is one tough old lady. The kingdom of Midnight is twisted and dark. Tyler is okay and I don’t blame him since like everyone else has been programed to be this way thanks to fear of the Dark King and his upbringing. He was likeable only because of his dog, Shadow. The romance between them was light and only bloom toward the end.

Overall Ruby & the Huntsman of Midnight was interesting. Much like Cinder & the Prince of Midnight it’s a dark twist and the world is just different from what I’m used to reading. It’s good but wish it was longer and had more story. Wonder if Ruby and Cinder will ever? Wonder if there will be a third book to finish their stories? Will the Dark King be defeated?

Loving it so far. I find it interesting how this differs from the first book, which many reviews criticised for being amateurishly written, but I really don't think that was the case. It feels like the first book had an intentionally simplistic prose to mimic a classical fairytale story, and I enjoyed it but found it hard to really connect to the characters because of the writing style. This one on the other hand, is much more realistically written and has drawn me in much deeper. I'm not sure if this was intentional, but I'm glad Susan Ee took this series in this direction.

On a slightly more unrelated note. I'm a lifelong fan of Susan Ee's after the Angelfall series and I'll read anything she writes, no matter what. And as an author myself, I know how negative feedback can be so detrimental to us, so I hope Susan doesn't read Goodread reviews (like how I don't read mine either). Or if she does, is able to disregard the reviews and continue writing for as long as she can because she is an incredible author, and so damn amazing at what she does. The Angelfall Trilogy is an unparalleled series to me, and someone who wrote something this good doesn't just 'lose it'. They might just need more time to get back into the swing of things again, especially after such a long hiatus.

it's cute yet thrilling retelling story. I love Susan Ee's Angelfall series, I don't know if I miss them so much I think I got some Angelfall's vibe in this book, how the characters like have some similarities, the Huntsman with Raffe and Ruby with Penryn and how they have to fight together and protect each other. in this book we followed Ruby who has been held as a prisoner then she maintain her lives with kills two big beast creatures called Howler then the Huntsman recruits and trains her as a bait to the Wolfkin, a very big wolf that live in the woods that the King very intended to get them all. she knows she's being a bait yet still bravely walking to the woods with just some fight moves that she got from training with her grandmother before the captive

I really enjoyed reading this book and I'm looking forward for the next book from the author

I’m convinced these stars are more from nostalgia for her Angelfall than for actual merit.
Still, I liked Tyler, the love interest here, better than Dante and I liked having his povs and he may be a new addition to my book-boyfriends. Also, Shadow is good boy! <3
On the good side, this book flew incredibly well. I didn’t read it, but listened to it, and after a few “minutes”, I went to check the time passed and discovered I was after the half of the book.
Would I like a sequel to the Penry and the End of Days series? Yes. Will I still read (or listen to) the next installment in this series because these are interesting takes on the tales and I’m curious for the next pick? Once again, yes.

Okay

This was ok. The story had a good premise and some interesting takes on the fairy tale. My main issue was not feeling the chemistry between Ruby and Tyler throughout the book. I also just didn’t feel overly connected to both characters either. My favourite character was probably Shadow!
I enjoyed Cinder and the Prince of Midnight, so if another in this group of fairy tale retellings comes out then I’ll read it and hope it’s as good as the first.

Loved it!! What a fun trip out of these dark times

I can’t wait for Susan’s next fairy tale. She had me on the edge of my seat hoping Ruby would survive the dark awful land. She is a masterful writer. I just love her focus on strong heroines, who can do anything. Susan’s novels don’t have simpering women waiting to be saved, these women are strong and save everyone including themselves.

Thoughts:
this was actually an interesting story with a lot of depth, an interesting... (soft of) retelling.
I think I'd have enjoyed it much more if it had a different voice cast. at times she sounded like a bot and I think this could have been a 4 star read if it was given a different voice

This is the first fairytale re-telling standalone series I’ve read. Don’t get me wrong there were some good parts however, this just isn’t the right sub genre for me at this time. Although I will say I do have a lot of these re-telling style books in my tbr pile- I think I will keep them in this pile for a little while longer. 😏

3-1/2 stars. This one made it to the roundup point. I think I've begun to hope for more of these to come along pretty quickly. Doesn't compare with the Penryn & The End of Days series but I'm sure it wasn't intended to. These are short and pretty quick retellings.

Much better than first in series

I enjoyed first book in series until the end, which left so much hanging. This one is very independent even though set in the same world and comes to a clear conclusion. Much more satisfying.

Creatures of the forest

I really like this series and how so far there's some overlap with the characters even as new ones are introduced. There is more than meets the eye. Ruby and Gran are resourceful and interesting characters.
