No Time for Duplicity: A Psychological Thriller

Rate this book
We are all capable of murder, given the right circumstances and the wrong reasons. But what truly defines a murderer is what comes next—the choices made in the critical moments immediately following the act.

Parker Grant, a young therapist in Atlanta, has built his life around a meticulously organized home, a carefully curated image, and a career dedicated to helping others untangle their chaos. But when an attractive client from couples therapy is killed in his own condo, Parker’s world begins to crumble.

A mysterious package arrives at his office—a bloodied watch and incriminating photographs that pull Parker into a mind-bending web of deception. Manipulated by those he trusts and haunted by memories that may not be his own, Parker is thrust into a maze of lies, obsession, and betrayal. Each revelation pushes him closer to the edge of mania, blurring the lines between reality and illusion.

As Parker races to uncover the truth, he is forced to confront his deepest fears and darkest desires. Is he the victim of a twisted game, or has he become the villain in his own story? When faced with the ultimate question—how far will you go to protect your secrets?—Parker discovers that the greatest threat may not lie in the shadows but within himself.

No Time for Duplicity is a gripping psychological suspense thriller that will keep you questioning reality until the final page. Perfect for fans of Gone Girl and The Silent Patient, this twist-filled novel explores the fragility of identity, the power of manipulation, and the devastating consequences of hidden desires and deception.

I liked certain things about this book. The language was very descriptive and allowed for an image to be created. I could SEE the characters and scenes. At times there were some overly detailed passages but mostly it was a positive for me.

I did enjoy the chapters titles and sub-titles giving an indication of where things happened in the timeline. While I loved this and it helped me to keep track of where I was in the timeline, the story felt rushed and thrown together in some sections and drawn out or given unnecessary details/background in other sections.

I didn’t initially realize this was a LGBTQIA+ novel and I actually love that element. Many thriller and whodunit stories are straight male/final girl setup. This was a refreshing change of pace.

The way the chapters are set up and written almost puts you in Parker’s shoes. You’re receiving fragmented information that plays with your mind.

Was this meant to be a touch smutty? It was just enough to not overdo it!

I did have a few times I was confused on who was narrating because it does switch who’s internal monologue we’re following.

Overall I did enjoy this book. There were a few things that made it a little harder for me to follow along and stay fully involved but regardless I did like it. I’m sensing another book to follow this!

In this psychological thriller, D.J. Ciccarello takes you on a journey of emotional twists and turns. As the story begins, the reader is already asking questions, and the mind begins to make predictions. However, those predictions can be challenged with each new chapter.

Throughout the story, the author brings the characters to life through descriptive dialogue and imagery. As the reader connects with the characters, the story reveals choices and decisions that come with consequences. At some point in the story, the connection with the characters starts to feel so real that you begin to reflect upon your own moral compass and wonder how you might react. You become emotionally invested! Then, just as you think you have the story figured out, you are given another twist that makes you question everything you thought you knew. It is a thrilling ride complete with mystery and deception. It will challenge you to consider your own limits.

I received an advanced copy of this book, and I am giving my personal opinion. I have read it twice now, as I enjoyed it so much the first time I wanted to read it again! For me, it was a page turner. I am definitely a fan of this author and especially this book!

No Time for Duplicity is a psychological thriller that pulls us into the life of Parker Grant, a young therapist who prides himself on his meticulously cultivated image and ability to maintain control over every aspect of his life. His world begins to unravel when one of his clients from couples therapy ends up dead. What will Parker be willing to do to regain control and to restore order? The events that follow have Parker questioning his own sanity, pulling him into a world of lies, deceit and manipulation. Is he a victim, or the villain?

The book features short chapters, which often have a title or dates to help keep the timeline organized. There are only a few key characters to keep track of, although sometimes the narration changes abruptly and you can be reading another character’s perspective before realizing that you’ve switched over. While this is a relatively quick read, the pacing varies significantly between chapters, with some being very detailed and others feeling very rushed.

One of the book’s strongest aspects is the LGBTQ representation through Parker’s character. His internal struggle as he grapples with his sexual desires as a semi-closeted man is in direct conflict with his need to maintain control over his fabricated image that he presents to his mother, clients and colleagues. The romance between men is a refreshing change from the traditional wife/husband dynamic seen in many thrillers. This subplot of Parker’s internal struggle makes the main plot stronger, as we see the dual struggles join forces to push Parker’s sanity to its limits.

I’d recommend this if you're looking for LGBTQ representation with gay men, or a book that is equal parts plot-driven suspense and character-focused storytelling. Although not without its flaws, I was pleasantly surprised with how original and fresh this felt for me!

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this review is my honest opinion.

This book truly is a psychological thriller that had me with so many theories, in which NONE were true (I love that about a book).

This novel begins with the main character, Parker, receiving a mysterious package. Inside the package is a bloodied watch, which spooks Parker. Parker is a couples therapist, so whoever sent the watch left it at his job just for him because there wasn't any postage on it.

The novel goes backward to the events in which Parker meets a couple, and begins to counsel them. He is intrigued by them and their relationship comes to head one night at a club.

I can't write more on that without giving the book away but this book was CRAZY. I liked how the author wrote this novel, because I could definitely see everything with the descriptive language.
I also loved how it kept me guessing to the end. At about 85% into the book, I started piecing everything together but the ending is what kind of threw me off. It is an open-ended book (I'm not a huge fan of those) but overall, this book was pretty good.

Thank you to BookSirens and the author for providing me with this novel to read and review! I really enjoyed this psychological thriller! Without giving away too much, I can say that the novel has a unique premise as the basis of the plot. The novel started out a bit slow for me...it took me a few chapters to really be drawn into the story, but I felt the detailed description/imagery and strong, well developed protagonist kept me intrigued and invested in the text. I also enjoyed the semi-omniscient narration - as a reader, it's always interesting in this type of genre to know the innermost thoughts of one of the characters. The pacing of the plot varied at times for me...sometimes it seemed a just a bit too slow, other times the pacing was perfect for a thriller. I would've liked to have a bit more resolution on a couple of issues at the end of the novel, but also the way this novel was structured leaves room for a potential sequel, too. The novel evoked empathy, sympathy and a desire to keep reading - all signs of a good read!

I don’t usually read thrillers, but this was the best I’ve read in years! It masterfully blends suspense, emotion, and sharp storytelling to create a gripping story. The main character is portrayed with depth and psychological realism. He’s complex, layered, and utterly compelling. His journey through escalating tension, buried secrets, and unexpected twists is mesmerizing.

I enjoyed the sophisticated handling of themes—control, chaos, and the duplicity inherent in every person. The book dives beneath the surface to dissect how closely guarded secrets and buried truths can unravel even the most disciplined life. It was also refreshing to see prominent gay characters portrayed in this genre, adding a meaningful layer of authenticity and representation to the thriller landscape.

This novel is an must-read for anyone who loves psychological thrillers that challenge perceptions and deliver genuinely shocking twists. The story is not only entertaining but deeply thought-provoking.

No Time for Duplicity by D.J. Ciccarello is a well-written thriller that delves into themes of perception and reality. The narrative frequently shifts perspectives mid-chapter, which can be disorienting at times but also adds depth to the story. These shifts compel the reader to question what is real and what is not, enhancing the psychological complexity of the plot.

Despite the occasional confusion caused by the narrative structure, the book maintains a solid pace and keeps the reader engaged. The author’s exploration of the blurred lines between truth and illusion is thought-provoking and adds a unique layer to the thriller genre. Overall, No Time for Duplicity is a compelling read that challenges the reader’s perceptions and offers a fresh take on psychological suspense.

I enjoyed reading this thriller. This is a newer author for me that I enjoyed from beginning to end. The author's creative writing skills made the twist and turns edge sitting. This is a well written story about Parker and his life. The question remains throughout the story is, is he the victim or the villian? I enjoyed the characters in this story and how they kept the story engaging. I enjoyed watching the growth throughout which made the story hard to put down. This is a fast paced story that is easy and entertaining to read. I really enjoyed reading this story. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent thriller that is ripped from the headlines!
Parker Grant is a couples counselor. When he advises Mark and Devin on their relationship he becomes closely involved with his clients. Soon he is afraid that he has done the unpardonable and his life begins to fall apart.
This was excellent in the development of the fear and paranoia that follows Parker's humanity as he deteriorates and plunges into the path of no return.
I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a Hitchcock film or scary scenario.

I mostly enjoyed this story but the pace was inconsistent and I found it easy to put down and walk away. It was pretty easy to work out who the co-conspirator was, so the reveal was of no surprise to me. There were elements of the story that were left incomplete by the end, which was a little frustrating.
It's not a story I would read again.

Read this book now. A twisty turvy page turner that I could not stop reading and I’m mad it’s over. Sequel soon please Mr. Ciccarello. I haven’t enjoyed a thriller like this since Girl on the Train. Highly recommend.

Thank you Book Sirens for the ARC of this book to review.

The premise of this book is an interesting one but I wish there were more. I wish we saw more of what made Parker who he is as a person. I wish there were more details about the crash out he has in reference to the Devin situation. The twist was definitely there but needed more fleshed out. If there were more details over all, this book would be 5 stars for sure.

This story illustrates what happens when you ignore your own needs and assimilate into another's for the sake of not being alone and for the sake of being understood. Many people can understand you, but that doesn't mean they genuinely love you. It is also a warning to be careful when you go out clubbing.
When Parker wakes up from a hangover one day to a tragedy he doesn't remember happening, and then to another situation that is a potential beacon to a mental issue he may not have known existed, he begins a journey to put the pieces together, and to find that the monster he is hiding from may even be himself. Or is he being played? Parker goes on a mission to find out what happened during the missing time in his life, who he can really trust, and if he should be afraid of himself.
There are a few editorial errors in this script, misspellings here and there, but nothing that would throw the story off. I love how the writer can draw you into scenes and how you can feel the weather, scenery, tension, and emotions of the characters. This is the essence of a good writer. I began to wonder as I was reading this if Parker may need a therapist himself or if his friends are really his friends. This book can easily be a bestseller (with a better editor) and then made into a movie. And I'll be the first one in the seat. I can't wait to see more from this author.

Holy cow! What a novel!! I'm still reeling from reading this one. Twist and turns that surprised me, got me confused and kept me guessing until the very end. It was well written despite being slow in some areas. This was my first time reading a novel by D. J. Ciccarello and it definitely won't be the last. It's been a while since my last 5-star review! It didn't disappoint and one I'll be adding to my Kindle library!

I voluntarily read and reviewed a free copy of this book from Hidden Gems.
