“You thought you knew pleasure before you met me. You were wrong.”

Kit Fox needs a fresh start. Her essays on quantum physics are too outlandish for the mainstream, and her writing career is fizzling. But things look up when she’s offered the opportunity of a lifetime: a private three-day interview with reclusive billionaire Ian De Leon, inventor of the Pleasurebot. He’s publishing a biography, and he wants Kit to write it.

But Ian has a secret locked away in his sky-high penthouse: the Prototype, a disobedient and unpredictable new Pleasurebot. Against Ian’s explicit wishes, Kit becomes completely enraptured by the Prototype. And what she thought was going to be a standard interview becomes a sickening freefall into obsession, self-discovery, and otherworldly desires.

i mean, honestly good for kit. i love an mmc that’s utterly obsessed to a point where it’s a little concerning. yeah, i can’t blame her one bit.

sure, there were flaws in the book but i had such a fun time reading so i don’t really care!

All I want is to be swept off my feet by a dangerously devoted, slightly terrifying, otherworldly being… Is it really too much to ask for… apparently yes. Tragically… yes.

So for now… we’re just going to have to read about it.

You’ll read this in one sitting. You’ll be turned on. You’ll be terrified. You’ll question your morals. You’ll blush. You’ll squirm. But mostly?

You’ll be jealous… it’s not happening to you.

That last part is debatable… but it was very true for me.

Kit is a writer whose career is fizzling until she’s offered the opportunity of a lifetime… a private three day interview with reclusive billionaire Ian De Leon. Inventor of the Pleasurebot.

But Ian has a secret locked away in his sky high penthouse… the Prototype, a disobedient and unpredictable new Pleasurebot…

Ask me if you think those three days go well….

“I’ll follow every order you give me, as long as it brings you closer to rapture.”

Meg has a way of reaching directly into my brain, plucking out my deepest, darkest fantasies… and not only bringing them to life, but wrapping them in a story that’s equal parts terrifying, intoxicating, and unexpectedly profound.

She doesn’t just write horror sci-fi romance… she excavates it from the rawest corners of your imagination and serves it back with hauntingly beautiful writing, gut punching twists, and characters you somehow fall in love with even when you know you… probably shouldn’t.
It’s scary. It’s steamy. It makes you feel AND think. Sometimes… more than you’re ready for. And honestly? That’s what makes her brilliant.

This story is short but it packs a punch. And I’m obsessed with the fact that every fantasy I have in this world is recognized and fulfilled. Why choose… am I right? It’s basically why choose. Well. Sort of. I can’t explain anything really. Only that.. you’re going to like it. A lot.

“You asked if we knew one another. The answer is yes. You have heard my voice, filtered through the sunlight of your dreams. You have seen my face, hidden in the shadows of your nightmares. And I have watched you for a long time. You are rare. You are perfect.”

This was another masterpiece added to Meg’s arsenal of sci-fi horror romance that somehow makes me want to crawl into a hole and disappear… AND simultaneously conquer the entire galaxy feeling every thrilling, terrifying, and passionate moment all at once.

I’m going to go sit in the shower now and stare at the wall and slowly drag myself back from that otherworldly experience. Back to reality, unfortunately. Because honestly… I’d gladly stay lost in this story forever.

❝ The Prototype will make you swear off sex with humans. He’ll ruin you. ❞

When Katherine “Kit” Fox, a struggling writer known more for her wild internet theories than her brilliance, is offered the chance to write the biography of Ian de Loen, the elusive billionaire and creator of the infamous Pleasurebot, she sees it as nothing short of a miracle. At last, an opportunity to step out of obscurity and into literary legitimacy. For Kit, it wasn’t just a job. It was her signal to break through.

But the more Kit spends time with Ian, the clearer it becomes that he’s not who she thought he was. More startlingly, he’s guarding a secret creation the world has never seen. Driven by determination and curiosity, Kit is prepared to uncover the unknown, no matter the cost.

⊹ ࣪ ˖ੈ Thoughts

Another strange but entertaining read! She just never misses, and when you think you know where her stories will go, nope she will definitely make you question if the things written on those pages are really even happening🤯💯

❝ He wants something groundbreaking,” I murmur, stopping to stand before the nondescript door. I type in the keycode. “I’ll give it to him. ❞

When the big news dropped that we’d have pleasure robots by 2025, women everywhere were in a frenzy and losing their minds. Fast forward to now, it's 2025, and all we have is an AI bot that plagiarizes and steals from actual artists (whomp whomp whomp🫩). But fear not! While the promised robot didn’t show up, Miss Ma’am Meg Smitherman came through and blessed us with this instead!🤩
This story had a strong cyberpunk vibe, thanks to its setting and atmosphere. While the concept was already familiar, it was still really cool to follow and think about the what ifs. It also had that Meg Smitherman touch of weirdness, vivid and mysterious, which never fails to draw me in. I’ll make this vague cause I don’t want to spoil hehez, but yea this was another addition to her “what the heck is even happening” stories. So just go dive into this one cause it was def an enjoyable time.

‧˚ ꒰ ⚡️ ꒱ character ₊˚⋆

The plot was already interesting, mysterious, and intriguing, but what truly stood out for me was Katherine. She knows what she wants and stands on it. Girlkeep, gatelight, gasboss (lol🤪). She is curious and driven to make this opportunity into something much bigger, not fearing to explore more of what Leon even wants. Her involvement, care, and heart added so much to the story. I could go on and on, but honestly, you’ll just have to read it yourself!❤️‍🔥

‧˚ ꒰ 🌧️ ꒱ final thoughts ₊˚⋆

❝ He’s a fucking robot, Katherine. ❞

After reading three of her books/novellas, I can confidently say one thing: Meg Smitherman makes absolutely delectable fuckable losers hihi (even tho in this one he's a robot lol)😩💘 And honestly? No one does weird, wonderful stories quite like she does. As expected, this was a weird one and might be her spiciest, but still an electrifying (did you get the pun?) and unforgettable read. Officially added her to my must-read and fave author hihi I'm already seated for her next drop‼️

I've been devouring novellas for the past few days, and this is the last one before I go back to reading my supposed reads for the month! 3 Meg Smitherman novellas in a row hihi!🤩❣️

Meg Smitherman is quickly becoming one of my autobuy authors. The way she balances science-fiction, horror, and romance reminds me of one of my all-time favorite authors, Tanith Lee. And obviously, when I heard that this book was going to be about evil sex robots, my first thought was Lee's SILVER METAL LOVER. Smitherman even compares this book to that one on one of her TikToks, and I honestly think that's a great comp. ENTITY is like SILVER METAL LOVER but with the trippiness of Love Death + Robots and an accessible contemporary dark romance vibe that's oh-so-addictive.

Kit Fox is a blogger who enjoys writing essays about physics but she's ready for the next step in her writing career. When she's tapped to write the biography of an Elon Muskesque billionaire who has created a new line of AI-powered sex robots called Pleasurebots, it feels too good to be true. But almost as soon as she gets to his sky-high penthouse, the vibe is immediately off. Ian is unprofessional and overly sexual, and he makes a reference to a defective prototype of his Eros line of dolls that is, as he says, "disobedient."

This is a great horror romance but it also has a lot of weighty commentary about the future ethics of AI and the dangers of wanton scientific advancements done without empathy or intervention. There's a line in here that's so powerful, about how if we manage to create an AI so sophisticated that it passes all human tests, holding it captive and forcing it to do labor feels more like slavery than it does using a tool or product. And yes, that does tie into the story-- the question of souls, and humanity, and how far is too far. I wasn't in love with the twist, and had some questions about Kit's ability, but I think this is a great, creepy, sexy novella, and the vibes were absolutely immaculate if you're into a light cyberpunk atmosphere.

I never get on here and intentionally deter anyone from reading a book that will be for them. Take my thoughts and opinion with a grain of salt. I think that Meg is brilliant. The way her mind works and how she is able to put those ideas on paper and give us such eerie romances that make us uncomfortable yet unputdownable, is remarkable. I was given the opportunity to arc read Entity and still feel so honored and respect the body of work despite not liking it.

The first 30% of the book grips you. There's a mystery and this weird sexual tension that simmers off the pages as you continue to dive into the truth of this penthouse and the pleasurebots. However, once we get there....it completely has a "WTHELLY" moment and took me out of the story completely. Where I felt that the direction she went in Thrum earned its pages, this one did not. The ending, for me, destroys the buildup and set up. I was still left with questions and confused by the FMC's decision. What was advertised as a penthouse full of horrors ended up being a penthouse full of stupidity.

I did this to myself though as I didn’t like Thrum by Meg either, but I feel like that was still miles better than this. The blurb sounded really promising and similar to Silver Metal Lover by Tanith Lee (which I loved). However, this was more so a slasher compared to Lee’s introspective on what it means to be human/real and what it means to love and be loved.

I’m just going to list out my issues that I had with this book as I don’t have the energy to rant:

-F$ck appears 133 times in this short, 150 page book. I’m not a prude, but no one talks like that and it ruined the reading experience for me. I don’t care if it was swapped out with “Cookie Monster” or something, repetitive words and phrases just come off as unoriginal.

-The fmc was dumb, without ruining anything she just made a lot of dumb and selfish decisions.

-The MMC Orpheus is just a simp for the fmc and that’s all his character is.

-I’m super mad with what happened to Eros. He didn’t deserve that. And I’m mad at the fmc for justifying it at the end.

-The writing was all over the place and I couldn’t get a good grasp on the world or the characters motivations, etc.

I think there was a really original and good idea here for a science fiction novel, it just was executed like a Wattpad knock off of the Twilight Zone.

my new fave meg smitherman novella?????

entity was exactly what i hoped for in that “grungy blade runner-esque sci-fi” way. utterly unputdownable. i would 1000% read a full length book set in this world😩

i’m still reeling and can’t put my thoughts into coherent words. 4.5⭐️????

ORPHEUS THEY COULD NEVER MAKE ME HATE YOU 🧎🏻‍♀️

⚠️slightly spoilery thoughts below:

while this novella doesn’t feel as “horror” as Thrum and Swallowed, I can’t get over how much i loved the setting and premise. the twist wasn’t as crazy as the other novellas but oh my god was i along for the ride, not wanting it to end.

“There’s no reason to be afraid. I won’t force you. I’ll follow every order you give me, as long as it brings you closer to rapture.”

Kit Fox’s career is tanking; until she’s offered the opportunity to ghostwrite the autobiography of billionaire Ian De Leon, inventor of the Pleasurebot. The catch? It’s a private 3-day interview in his headquarters/home where she’s given the chance to test drive a Pleasurebot for herself (WOMEN IN STEM). But hidden in his penthouse is the Prototype: unpredictable, forbidden, and irresistible. What begins as a simple assignment spirals into obsession, desire, and dangerous self-discovery.

Consider my flabbers, gasted. This ass?? Tonished. This was part gothic romance, part tech nightmare and part horny haunted house ride. Think Ex-Machina/West World/early Black Mirror vibes. It’s creepy, interesting, sexy as hell, and managed a twisted angst filled ending that had me saying you know what? Hell yea.

Thank you Meg Smitherman for the arc and the opportunity to be creeped out and horned up again.

Overall a quick, fun read but I wish it was more fleshed out. It felt rushed, especially the ending. Wasn’t a fan of the billionaire guy (he’s literally described as having a hairy chest and being short, did not expect him as a love interest lol) or the “disobedient” robot. I remember seeing an art of the characters where the FMC was in the middle of both robots, but they’re never in the same scene together unfortunately. It definitely felt like a fanfiction style writing more than a proper novella or short story. Also at the end she goes way too quickly from self loathing to feeling like she’s hot shit, it was whiplash. I was hoping it would scratch my itch for AI sex robots but unfortunately it didn’t. I really enjoyed Thrum from the same author, that was a gem! But each subsequent book after hasn’t hit quite the same. I may give her another try in the future but I’m not sure.

What an erotic mindf*ck!!

Meg, you are a glorious writer that knows exactly how to mix romance, sci-fi, and horror.

This novella follows a science blogger named Kit, who goes to a verrrry wealthy inventor’s penthouse (Ian De Leon) to write about his life and s*xbot inventions.

A little eerie, a little weird…This woman is h*rny and ready to put these bots to use!

It was sl*tty, it was hot, and it kept me on the edge of my seat! I was surprised at every twist. I couldn’t guess what going to happen. It was beautifully plotted.

The characters and the environment were described in a melancholic and futuristic way, while also being divine and exquisite.

If you like a “why choose” involving robots/humans, with very hot spice scenes and unearthly vibes, this one is for you!

I highly recommend. Get ready to have your mind blown by some robo-s*x.

Alright then. This was a wild ride of a book, and I enjoyed it a lot. I’m not really sure how to describe it without spoiling anything major. It feels cyberpunky with the neon-soaked city setting, and even though the MC is isolated for all but like 2% of the book you still get neat glimpses of a futuristic LA.

Decently spicy. Felt kind of forced near the end (though that may have been intentional).

It was a 5⭐️ read up until about the 75% mark. The transition into the final act was clunky, and it never really recovered. Great, quick read though.

I didn’t find it scary, but it definitely falls under more surreal type horror. It’s spooky. There’s no major feelings of dread (at least there wasn’t for me), but there’s a lingering sense of wrongness.

5 ⭐️ meg smitherman the RIDE you just took me on omfg — this was the best mix of “cyberpunk vibes” meets “ex machina + nosferatu” meets “sci-fi horror”

as typical with meg, i had no idea what was gonna happen next. i PLOWED through this book in one sitting. i could easily devour a full-length novel in this world — i loved the setting and the vibes so much, i just wanted more and more

kit, tbh, i would be making the same choices as you — i know meg markets it as “why choose but don’t get attached” but my dumbass did get attached and i was big sad at a certain part 😭😭

i cannot wait to reread this one friends!!!!

minor spoiler (???)
(the only thing — the only thing!! — that made me a bit sad was we didn’t get a sexy scene with **everyone** but that makes sense with the plot, i’m just selfish lmao)

This is kind of on me for not fully reading the blurb and falling for a tiktok the author made, i was under the impression this was going to be sci fi horror romance yearning rather than just outright porn. My bad 😅

If you're into a female protagonist having sex with robots and want a lil novella to help you reach your reading goal id say you'd like this, regardless that the prose is somewhat weak in some instances.

Definitely feel as though with some more practice, Smitherman has the chance to be a great author at some point!

There is nothing I could say that would describe correctly just how disoriented, anxious and horny this book made me - I devoured this in one sitting!🥵

If you were kinda turned on watching iRobot, read this book immediately - don’t ask, don’t read anything about it, just read this book🤖💦

3.5? This kind of lost me by the end, just like Swallowed did, but there is just simply no one else doing erotic scifi horromance like this. It’s fresh, it’s sexy, it’s just the right dash of scary, and I absolutely eat it up. I finished this in a single day. I need more.

If you are looking for a 600+ page science fiction novel with a thick plot, complicated world building, and convoluted characters, this is NOT for you. And I mean that in the BEST. WAY. POSSIBLE. This is a novella, and though not long, was able to transform and send me into a dark and dirty cyberpunk-esc world… a world where you can experience erotic robot sex and learn things about yourself that you never knew before.
This was a DELICIOUS palate cleansing novella in between some very dark and complex fantasy reads and I couldn’t have asked for a better read.

Thank you to Meg Smitherman for the advanced readers copy. It was EVERYTHING you promised it would be and more.

Hot. Damn. Meg does it again.
I was absolutely captivated with this story from start to finish. The mysterious elements were intriguing and kept me guessing with new theories. Kit was confident in who she was, Ian was the perfect weird eccentric billionaire, Eros was a doll (literally and figuratively), and Orpheus was what every human male SHOULD be intimidated by and rightly so.
That's the only acceptable unrealistic standard being set in literature, in my eyes. An actual pleasurebot...I digress.
This novella was great and highly recommended if you like short, sci-fi, little dash of wtf is happening, and lots of “NO ONE MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH ME RN; THIS ROBOT IS HOT AF” moments. Add it to your TBR!
