In a battle for control of the time stream, the past and the future will collide, either saving mankind—or destroying it.
What should be a routine mission leaves Ethan with a serious problem. He’s fractured, a break between mind and body that leaves him at the mercy of his Rifter abilities, which are quickly tearing him apart. He will have to trust the only person who might know how to fix him, a mysterious Rifter named Stewart Stills, who seems to have a special connection with the time stream. Forced to face his dark past and a decision he may never forgive himself for, he will be trained unlike any of the others, to become a true guardian of time. If he accepts, it will mean leaving everyone he loves behind, if he refuses, time itself could unravel. After a glimpse of the dark future awaiting them all, he will have to choose between destiny and desire. Will he rise up and take his place as a defender of the natural order, or will he watch as all of time burns at the hands of the girl he loves?

I want to thank Clean Teen Publishing for providing me with a copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.
If you have not read book 1 or 2 of this series STOP HERE! I don't want to ruin anything (and since this book follows the same time line as the second one, you will get spoilers if you have not read it!). And if you have not read either, what are you waiting for?
This book follows the same time line as Stein's book, but is told from Ethan's point of view. When I heard Ethan was getting a book I was totally ecstatic. Don't get me wrong, I love all the characters in these books. But Ethan, oh, he totally stole my heart in Extracted so I could not wait to read him. And I was not disappointed. I really loved his voice. The best part of Ethan is his loyalty. He is completely and totally loyal to his family/friends.
It was wonderful to get some of Ethan's historical background. I'm not much of a purveyor of history, but I loved watching as he learned about who he truly is and what happened to his family. And the twist the plot takes as he finds out exactly what his purpose is in this world made my insides turn. I can't get into it because, well, spoilers and all, but let's just say I hope things can balance out in the final book. I hate to not have a happily ever after!
As with the other books, this one is well paced. As you can see, I finished it in only a day. I didn't want to put it down. The story lines are always so riveting for me, capturing my interest immediately and never letting it go.
I will say this book ends on a cliffhanger. It's not something that has me pulling my hair out, but it does have me wanting the next book yesterday! I have no idea where the next book will take me but I know it will only immerse me in great things!
With craziness that was book two, I had to pick this third installment up immediately after finishing it. I couldn't wait to find out what was going on and happening next. The way the second book ended was almost cruel, or at least would have been if not for book three sitting right next to me demanding to be opened and devoured. And even though I knew this wouldn't necessarily give me the answers I was looking for since this really in just an extension of book two but told through Ethan's eyes and experience, I was hoping it would be enough to hold me over and ease some of the questions I had after the end of Prodigal.
I loved learning about Ethan's past since really, we know very little about him from the previous books. His background was fascinating and I loved the historic side to it. The history nerd in me couldn't help it.
This was so good, I loved book two and getting Stein's story but I think I might just have loved Ethan's more. So much to do with the time stream and the future as well as the past, it was just fascinating!
There is so much I want to tell you and say but I can't because it would give too much away but I will say this, I absolutely love Lex, Stein, Nobel, Ethan, Stills (although admittedly, he is a little creepy!), Sisson and Ember. You can tell how much they like each other and love each other. I love big groups of friends in stories, they really do add so much depth and fun to them. It was nice seeing them work together, argue, joke around, and care about one another.
Once again though we were left with a doozy of a cliffhanger but it was okay because I didn't mind. In fact I kind of liked being in suspense about it all. Being able to think about it long after I put the book down and trying to imagine what in the world is going to happen next.
This was a great addition to the series and while I did get some of my answers from book two, I still got a whole lot of questions too, but again, I loved every stinking minute of it and can't praise this series enough.
If you are looking for something that involves time travel, romance, friendships, historic detail, futuristic detail, and a whole lot of steampunk goodness, this is the story for you!
While Riven follows the beginning time line of Prodigal, it splits and tells us what happen to Ethan, and the others while Ember and Stein where off visiting Tesla. This writing duo had me holding my breath as we faced danger and traveled the time-stream.
The tale focuses on Ethan. He and Lex are on a mission rifting and collecting items when something goes terribly wrong. This causes Ethan to fracture, and the tale that follows was intense and geek-tastic. He gets help controlling things from Stewart Stills. Stills is fascinating and has been somewhat mysterious throughout the series. What he reveals to Ethan will alter his history. Ethan is struggling with remembering his past, and coming to terms with the burden Stills is about to trust upon him. Should he accept it would mean leaving all that he holds dear.
Time streams, rifting, danger, revelations and some serious danger had me flipping the pages and forgetting to come up for air. I love the direction the Lost Imperial series is taking and closed this book eager for the next episode. The whole idea of the time-stream itself was bloody brilliant. Time is more than a wibbly-wobbly timey-whimey ball of stuff.
Once again, I cannot recommend this series enough for fans of time travel, steampunk and Dr. Who. Vivid descriptions, fascinating, unpredictable world building and characters I have come to love Riven was another winner.
I won this book from first reads - it came along with the second book in the series and I reviewed them both together as one. You can read it under the Prodigal by the same authors.
I enjoyed this book, though as I said in the other review - it would do well as the second half to the second book rather than a stand alone novel as it is so small and such a quick read. I think it felt like an even faster read since it was quite the adventure and kept moving from cover to cover.
I received both Prodigal and Riven as ARCs. Prodigal is the story of Stein and and Riven the story of Ethan. They take places within the same time frame so I personally enjoyed reading them together as if they were one book. Without giving away too much information... both books explore the past of the two Rifters and how it effects them in the present and the future. Definitely some surprise twists to the plot that readers of Extracted would never expect! Great read!
This is an interesting time travel book. I haven't read the first two books of the series, but I was able to figure out what was going on. As a history lover, I had a few geek out moments when I figured out who some of the main characters were.
There were a few plot holes and timey wimey problems, and some of the beginning wasn't as interesting, though that may be because I hadn't read the first two books and wasn't as connected to the main characters as I should've been.
I listened to the audiobook version, and the narration was excellent.
The path the authors take to tell the story is not always the way I would expect. Sometimes it feels like we are going the wrong way, but it's far from that. The path takes us right where the characters need to be. I really enjoyed the journey of Ethan's here and what he learns of himself and around him. Ethan's venture takes place in the same time frame as Prodigal and ends in the same place, but where he goes and what he learns is completely different. And mind-blowing. I'm wondering where the children all go from here, with what they've all learned of themselves and the time. I hope they share it all and we go forward to see what they do.
****FULL REVIEW**** *This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review at my request.
After hearing what the Hollows did, creating a paradox that almost destroyed time and Flynn being lost to it, Tesla decides they must escalate plans to deal with the Hollows. Above all else, to get the Imperial children back.
Ethan starts to remember his past and it affects him in a way he'd not expected, or any other. He learns to travel through time and finds he's got more to offer than he expected.
James Darcy is a new narrator for me. In the beginning I could hear him taking the breath before speaking a stretch, though this became less obvious within the first chapters. Tesla's rendition here is not a twangy sound like in the previous stories, but more scratchy and deep. James uses his voice to make the differences where it sounded like others had used electronics to help with that twangy sound. I felt like the emotions of Ethan shifted as he talked in sudden ways instead of a smooth transition. Could it have been where new recordings ended and started? I'm not sure as the flow of recording is seamless, no audible clues to the recording sessions. I look through the ebook/print book before I start listening. One thing James doesn't add, and I wish he would have, was the heading of who we are living through. Ethan. There was one stumble, or I think, in one word as he reads through the story, in chapter 7. Overall, James was a nice voice to listen to.
Each book has a new focus character. This book is on Ethan. We overlap a little bit with some of the events from Prodigal, but Ethan's story is different in the events he lives through and learns of himself. We get to learn the connection of Ethan to the series title. Interesting what we've learned of these special children. With each book I realize how special these children really are.
We had seen Ethan fracture in the previous book. What we didn't see then is Ethan facing his past that's causing this fracture. Ethan must get his emotions under control, learning what happened in his past and facing his fear.
Oh how the lives of these children are intertwined. With the time travel, we see how the current selves interact with past lives of others. And it's so easy to keep track of who's when! I like the way the authors tell this story of time travel, making it easy to know who, where, and when we are.
We learn more of the Time Stream, and Stills and his connection to it. This is interesting. And the reason we learn it, oh very interesting. I can't tell you the reason because it ties in with the story. You just have to read (or listen) to learn about it too. Then we have a mission when Sisson returns from her travel to the future, things have changed and not for the good. We get to travel to the future with Ethan, Lex, and Sisson. There are some very interesting little, dangerous gadgets they get to use. The reason we travel to the future with Sisson is interesting and I like the way it's described before we go. It makes sense!
The path the authors take to tell the story is not always the way I would expect to travel.
‘Prodigal’ and ‘Riven’ are the second and third entries in a series of 4 steampunk time-travel novels. Please read ‘Extracted’ before continuing this review.
As with ‘Extracted,’ authors Ficklin and Jolley seamlessly integrate steampunk inventions, clothing, and accessories into a clear to follow and fast-paced plot. The main characters and their significant others are developed and complex. Whereas ‘Extracted’ is told through the duel points of view of Lex and Ember, ‘Prodigal’ and ‘Riven’ are told from the points of view of their significant others.
Each book picks up exactly where the plot left off in ‘Extracted.’ ‘Prodigal’ follows the events that occur next from Stein’s point of view. ‘Riven’ follows the events that occur next from Ethan’s point of view. For us Romanov sibling fans, not to worry – each book heavily involves Lex and Ember.
When we last saw her, Stein was reading an old Tesla journal. She learns interesting information regarding her biological family members, and gets the idea to run a blood test; a paternity test. With Nobel’s help, she confirms the identity of her biological father, but also learns that her body is breaking down and dying quite rapidly. She and Ember travel through time to learn more about her ailments and the tests run on her as a baby, before ultimately deciding that Tesla himself is the only one who might be able to save her.
Stein’s discoveries also motivate her to move out from The Hallows headquarters. Lex, Ember, Ethan, Nobel, and Sisson join her in discovering a new hideout and gathering enough loot to make it a home. It is during one of these trips that Lex and Ethan run into some trouble, and Ethan remembers rather emotional moments from his past. The strong emotions cause him to ‘fracture’ through time, to literally bounce around from one moment to the next, into different places and times. Only the knowledgeable Stewart Stills understands what is happening to Ethan, and is able to train him to control the fracturing.
‘Riven’ also gives us a glimpse of an anomaly in the timeline; an alternative and dystopian future that was never supposed to happen. We also learn more about Sisson, and why she alone has been tasked with procuring a special chemical from the future for Claymore’s helmet.
Though ‘Extracted’ did not end on a cliffhanger, both ‘Prodigal’ and ‘Riven’ do. The books end on the same cliffhanger, however, each present different tidbits of information, as told from Stein and Ethan’s perspectives, and readers are privy to the secrets kept by each. Looking forward to the future release ‘Absolution’ (The Lost Imperials #4).
I highly recommend these page-turners to any reader who enjoys time travel, steampunk, YA and fantasy.
I was given the ebooks for Prodigal and Riven in exchange for an honest review. Prodigal and Riven are the second and third books in the Lost Imperials Series. I loved the first book, Extracted. It's focus was on brother and sister, Lex and Ember. Prodigal focuses on Stein, Lex's girlfriend and her story, while Riven focuses on Ethan, Ember's boyfriend. It's so great seeing the backstories of the other lead characters from the first book while seeing the continuation of their stories. Everything fits together so perfectly in the story lines and in looking back at all three books, you can see little clues left along the way. At first glance when reading Prodigal and Riven it appears as though a lot of things are glanced over and not really talked about-until you get to the other part and it fills in the gaps. They are two individual stories that take place simultaneously-we saw this in the first book but it was written consecutively. Questions are answered from the first book we didn't even know existed until the second and third installments. I love the idea of time travel and seeing different time periods and how the Time Stream works. They've done an incredible job at weaving all of the times, locations, and stories together. It's great to be able to see the leadership in their younger days and find out about the events that led up to the current events in the book. Of course, they leave off on a cliffhanger and I despise the fact that I now have to wait forever to see what happens. I have absolutely fallen for Stein, Lex, Ember and Ethan, as well as the supporting characters like Noble and Scission. I'm completely addicted. Great job Sherry and Tyler-I hate you and love you all at once for being amazing and making me wait for more!
Oh my goodness, I started reading Riven expecting to not enjoy this installment like I had the former two, but OMG! SO GOOD! I love this series SO much.
Riven is a companion to Prodigal so there is a lot of the same beginning text, the first few chapters are almost exactly the same except told from Ethan's point of view instead of Stein's. Then they branch, Stein goes one way and Ethan another and so we follow Ethan - an boy are there a lot of twists in this one. I thought that Stein's background was amazing but so was Ethan's and it was not expected AT ALL! I can't go into more detail - too many spoilers, but Ethan's life is just as amazing as Lex, Ember, and Stein's, if not more so.
Once again the characters were wonderful - Lex and Ember are still around and it is interested to see these characters from the other character's points of view - especially since we have been reading as them in the first book. Lex seems to be overly impulsive in this installment, whereas in the first book he seems that way but since you are reading as him it feels more justified- here he just seems childish.
I really am liking how the authors are forming this world and the characters, I love it all so much! Cannot wait for more!
After reading books one and two, I was ready to move on with book three. And, even though this book did end by neatly tying them all together, it was pretty tough wading through the first 2\3s of the book. I actually turned to the back to see how it ended before I went back to pick up the story. There was already so much going on that adding more challenges made the story pretty busy reading. ...but, I did want to see how it all tied up and, I did like the ending.
Series only gets better. As the plot thickens and the story develops, I found myself becoming more and more fascinated with how this story would play out. Who was Evan in history? Why was he fracturing? What happened to everyone left at the conservatory? These and so many more questions bounced around in my head and I needed answers. While I only got some answers and a lot more questions I loved the journey and look forward to the next exciting chapter.
