She can touch an object and sense the emotions of the people who’ve held it before…

After solving the mystery of her predecessor’s death, geologist Petra Cloch wants to focus on her new job as the rocks and minerals curator at a quirky, small-town New Mexico museum. But her friend and colleague Liberty is suspicious of the “accidental” death of Frank Underwood, a retired petroleum engineer and rockhound who unexpectedly died while hiking. Frank acted odd and secretive in his last weeks—mumbling about an incredible find in the desert and aliens. Was he showing the first signs of dementia, or were more sinister forces at work?

Petra agrees to help excavate the truth, and soon, instead of meeting for book club, she and her friends become amateur investigators. Petra uses her gift and her brains to sort through the contradictory stories and confusing clues as she and her friends dig for answers.

Did Frank’s heirs decide to hasten their inheritance? Or did his rock shop business partner decide to go solo? Petra joins the local geological club to discover whether someone there acquired a taste for murder, because they’ll need rock solid evidence to catch a killer.

Perfect for fans of Paige Shelton’s Alaska Wild Mysteries and Heather Graham’s Krewe of Hunters!

If you love supernatural sleuths, small-town intrigue, and mysteries with a geological twist, Death at Rock Bottom is your next must-read! Grab your copy today!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Geologist Petra Cloch has the gift of psychometry, the ability to hold an object that spent time in human hands and pick up emotional echoes of the past residue left behind by the people who used or wore or loved the item. It is an ability few people know about, and truthfully, she doesn’t even know why she has it or all the capabilities she may have. She has moved to Bonneville, New Mexico, for her new job as the geological curator at the Bandit Museum on Route 66. Her gift helped solve the mystery of the former geological curator.

Her co-worker, Liberty, has become a friend and is the only one who knows about Petra’s gift. Liberty, who also has a special gift, has some concerns about the death of retired petroleum engineer and “rockhound”, Frank Underwood. Frank died while hiking on trails he often travels. People have said he had been acting strangely and tight-lipped the last few weeks, and telling a few about an extraordinary find and mumbling about aliens. His wife believed it was a sign of early dementia, but what if it wasn’t?

The members of the “book club” gather to figure out if Frank’s death was truly accidental or if the man was murdered. They set out to dig up clues while Petra uses her gift to get to the rock bottom of what happened to Frank Underwood and why.

Petra is becoming more comfortable in Bonneville, making friends with her colleagues at the museum while getting to know others in the community, like the sheriff deputy’s wife, Elena, and her next-door neighbor, Shelley. Even Kit isn’t as creepy this time. We get to know all the core characters better as they continue to develop throughout the story.

Frank was an interesting man. He co-owned a rock shop with Otis Zimmer, but was more of a silent partner because he would rather be out hiking, looking for rocks and gems. His death was surprising, but sadly, there were people with a motive to want him dead. New in town, Petra was not familiar with any of them, but others are, so she could tag along, ask some questions, and touch a few things. There may be a huge clue in the museum; they just have to find it. When the clues start to fall into place, they come up with a great plan, but it could put their lives in danger. This was one of those stories that had me on the sidelines, saying “just wait,” followed by Oh! You have to do something. Had it been a movie, I would have been watching through my fingers. I’ll just say, “teamwork makes the dream work”. I did have the right villain at the top of my suspect list, but I was mad about it and would have loved to be in on the takedown.

This second Reluctantly Psychic Murder Mystery was another very entertaining read from Kris Bock. Death at Rock Bottom takes us to the New Mexico desert, with an interesting protagonist that I really like, and a very intriguing mystery. Kris Bock’s detailed descriptions pull readers right into the story. From the museum to the desert and every place in between, I felt like I was right there. She even made me feel the heat. We have been enjoying a heat wave here, normal for July, but it was nice and hot for the residents in Bonneville in April. Like Petra, I am not sure a “dry heat” would be tolerable there in the summer months. We will have to wait for the next book to see. I am keen to see what this author comes up with next.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC.

In the first book in this series, A Stone Cold Murder, Petra Cloch, the rocks and minerals curator at the quirky Banditt Museum in New Mexico, solves the murder of her predecessor. Her friend and co-worker Liberty, is the only one who knows about her gift of psychometry. Petra can pick up emotions and feelings when she touches an object. Liberty's friend Frank Underwood, a retired petroleum engineer and rockhound, unexpectedly died while hiking and Liberty is sure that he was murdered. He had been acting strangely the prior few weeks, and the suspicion that someone was poisoning him is what Petra and Liberty are sure of. His wife came to the museum raving about a rock that he had donated and aliens, that gets Petra searching. They find the rock, which is actually part of a meteor and could be worth a lot of money. Is that what he was killed for?

I'm not a fan of magic or paranormal stories, but having a specific gift like Petra has really intrigues me. Petra has always been a recluse, worried about people finding out about her gift, and also worried about what she might feel when shaking hands or touching other people's items. She is finally letting her guard down, joining a book club, becoming friends with Liberty and Haven and in this book, joining the local geological club to search for clues. She normally prefers time with her animals to people. There were several suspects, including his wife and partner, and Petra has to sort them out. There are some humorous scenes, like when Petra and Haven sneak into his house to search his office. I thought I had figured it out, but once again, was not correct. I enjoyed following the friends and book club members as they sorted, discussed and investigated information. As the culprit was revealed, I had my aha moment, as it all fit together perfectly. I am really enjoying this series, with it's quirky characters, wonderful community and setting and the intriguing plotlines. I am looking forward to seeing what Petra and her friends get up to in the next Reluctantly Psychic story.

Death at Rock Bottom by Kris Bock

(Reluctantly Psychic Murder Mystery #2)

Wow—an excellent and well-written story from Kris Bock!

This cozy mystery pulls you in right from the start. The story follows Petra, a wonderfully crafted character with a unique psychic ability—she can touch an object and feel the emotions of the people who have owned or handled it. It’s a fascinating twist that adds depth to the mystery and fuels the investigation.

In this installment, Petra and her newfound circle of friends take on the role of amateur detectives as they try to uncover the truth behind the suspicious death of Frank. The mystery is layered and engaging, keeping you guessing throughout.

The characters are vibrant and relatable, the pacing is tight, and the emotional touches—both psychic and personal—add richness to the storytelling. I found myself thoroughly engaged and turning pages late into the night.

A brilliant murder mystery that I highly recommend! Whether you're into cozy mysteries, light paranormal twists, or just love a good whodunit, Death at Rock Bottom delivers.

DEATH AT ROCK BOTTOM by Kris Bock
The Second Reluctant Psychic Mystery

Petra Cloch is slowly getting accustomed to life in small town New Mexico, making friends, and working in the quirky Banditt Museum. While still not comfortable with her gift of psychometry, Petra decides to practice her skill with the help of her friend and coworker, Liberty. Their practice is interrupted by a woman demanding to know the whereabouts of the rock her late husband donated. Assuring her that they know nothing about it, the widow says she believes her husband had dementia as he had begun to be forgetful, paranoid, and talking about aliens. Departing as quickly as she appeared Liberty starts to wonder. Frank was a healthy man who knew his way around the desert. And even fit people can get disoriented and die in the heat. But what's the importance of this rock? Is there more to Frank's death? It couldn't hurt to start looking for the rock and delve into Frank's last days. Haven is more than excited to start another investigation. A missing rock, a missing will, could the desert death actually be murder?

I really like Petra and completely understand being overwhelmed dealing with people. I'd rather be home with my animals too! But I like how she's venturing out and how people are welcoming her into their circle. She has friends now, even though she finds that somewhat difficult at times. I also love Liberty and her calm mature presence. Haven, however, is a bit much for me with her overexuberant eagerness. Still, she is a good counterpoint to the quieter and more sedate Petra and Liberty. I am also a bit in awe of Jenny. She really commanded a fun scene.

I liked how the mystery was a bit obscure. Was it murder, manslaughter, or a tragic accident? What's the significance of Frank's big find? Is the motive inheritance, land, fraud, or something else. I appreciated how Haven divvied up roles and assigned tasks to the members of the "book" club. I also appreciated how snacks and drinks are an integral part. Snacks, drinks, and friendship. Everyone has a task and plays an important role, no matter their abilities. I also like how they have a mind to keep the sheriff and police departments in the know. No one is running off and taking stupid risks on their own either.

Rocks, aliens, and a death in the desert combine to make DEATH AT ROCK BOTTOM a unique and engaging mystery. The more I'm around these characters the more I love them and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Death at Rock Bottom is the second book in the Reluctantly Psychic Murder Mystery series by Kris Bock. I have read both books in this intriguing series and thoroughly enjoyed both of them. The new book is very exciting. I am fascinated with the concept of psychometry that Kris has shared as well as the progress I saw the main character Petra make in her inter personal relationships. The book is set in the Banditt museum in the small town of Bonneville, New Mexico. It is full of different artifacts and exhibits related to New Mexico. Petra is a geologist who was hired a few months prior to run the rocks and minerals area of the museum. She has the psychic gift of psychometry and shared this with one of her coworkers, Liberty. She isn’t comfortable around a lot of people, especially due to her psychic gift. Her past didn’t allow her to form friendships or understand how relationships worked.

Many of the same characters we met in the prior book are in this story as well. As the book opens, it is learned that a friend of Liberty’s died while out on a hike. His wife comes in the museum looking for a rock that he supposedly found while on his hike. Petra and Liberty share this information with their group of friends and they decide to investigate. They believe the death was murder and they are making a list of possible suspects. They split up the jobs to look into potential suspects as well as rumors about different people. As they investigate, Petra becomes better acquainted with the others on her team as well as the people they are looking into. I was quite impressed by how the group methodically set up the steps to investigate and all they were able to learn.

The book was well written with some eclectic characters and lots of interesting ideas. The interactions were fun to read. The author provided us with lots of clues, surprises and twists as we read through the mystery. It was wonderful to see the character growth of the main character Petra in this book. I tried to figure out the killer but I didn’t guess correctly. Also, I am not normally a fan of paranormal stories but this series has captivated my attention. I look forward to reading more books in the series. It is a five star book.

I was fortunate to receive this ARC from Tule Publishing in exchange for my honest review.

The museum crew is back in action, investigating the death of an old friend.

Death at Rock Bottom is the second book in author Kris Bock’s clever and unique Reluctantly Psychic Murder Mystery series featuring geologist and rock collection curator Petra Cloch and her new friends and colleagues at the quirky Banditt Museum in small Bonneville, New Mexico. When Petra’s colleague, Liberty, suspects the death of her old friend, petroleum engineer Frank Underwood, is no accident, the two enlist the help of their coworker, Haven, and the women of their monthly book club to investigate the circumstances.

Petra Clock is a likable and unique protagonist with her unusual gift and the struggles it has caused her to engage socially with others. She gets visions or impressions of a person from touching their belongings or things they’ve handled. Complications from her past have Petra in a perpetual state of anxiety, and interactions with others literally exhaust her. She’d previously discovered that the man she’d replaced at the Banditt Museum had been murdered when she’d inadvertently picked up the mineral formation that had been used to kill him. In this latest adventure, Petra uses her gift to help Liberty get to the truth behind the death of her friend, fellow rockhound and veteran desert hiker Frank Underwood.

The story moves at a fast clip as the two enlist the aid and skills of the women in their monthly book club. The investigation becomes an interesting and well-coordinated ensemble performance as each woman brings their special skills to the table. With a number of people set to benefit from Frank’s death, there is plenty of work to divvy up to eliminate suspects. While I had my eye on a particular individual, it wasn’t until the unusual final reveal that I knew for sure who the murderer was. As in the previous book, the dialogue and narrative are clever. However, there were incidents where details were repeated again and again. Readers new to the series should be able to pick up the story in this latest volume, but the first book is really an entertaining ‘must-read’ as well.

I recommend DEATH AT ROCK BOTTOM to cozy mystery readers.

Death at Rock Bottom by Kris Bock has Petra settling in at her new job and in small town life in New Mexico. In this story the murder is thought to be an accidental death in the beginning. Petra’s new friends are looking into the cause of death as well as some peculiar actions by the decreased before he died. After encouragement from them Petra joins the investigation. The murder was an odd on which had many suspects. Some of the suspects were individuals that I like so I was hoping that they were not guilty. The guilty ends up not being as smart as he thought he was.

This second book in the Reluctantly Psychic Murder Mystery Series was even better than the first which was a great introduction to the characters and Pertra’s unusual ability. This one show growth in her confidence and her relationships with more than just the four-legged creatures in her life. Seeing her accepted, encouraged and finding a safe place to be herself was a simply wonderful part of the story. Now if only that desert museum was real so I could take a trip to visit there.

Well written, another great story in this story. Full of drama, mystery, family, friends, rocks, intrigue, murder and an alien. Petra is still working at the museum with the rock exhibit along with her friends Liberty and Haven. Ivy's father Frank is found dead after hiking in the desert. No one is sure why a seasoned hiker dies of dehydration. So the book club/ murder mystery club members are ready to do their thing. First is to find the rock Vanessa, Frank's second wife , is trying to find. Second find his new will and third who really killed Frank. Was it Otis, his business partner, his first or second wife or was it someone else. As the club finds the clues and shares them, the pieces start to fall into place. Liberty, Haven, Petra are all in to finding out why , the who and how come. It's a surprise to find out who really the killer is. Curl up and enjoy this read. Would recommend to everyone this story and the rest of the series.

Petra is settling into her job at the museum when another curator, Liberty, asks for her help in looking into her friend Frank’s “accidental” death. Petra isn’t sure she really wants to get involved, but when the man’s widow and business partner are both trying to find the missing rock that Frank donated to the museum, she is reluctantly drawn in. Petra, Liberty, and the rest of their book club are on the case! Fun and entertaining, with realistic and relatable characters and a wild ride of an investigation. Can be read as a standalone, but start with book 1 to get all of the back story on Petra and her gift of psychometry.

Death at Rock Bottom is the second book in the Reluctantly Psychic Murder Mystery.
This was a very well written mystery so if you like that kind of story, this is definitely for you.
At first, this looked like it could be an accidental death. But the more they dug into it it just wasn’t adding up. There are a lot of questions and a lot of suspects. Definitely a story that’s going to keep you reading. Petra is really growing in her investigation skills. Of course her special gift to be able to. “Read” things definitely helps.
If you enjoy a good mystery, that’s gonna keep your mind working on solving that puzzle then this is definitely a read that I would recommend.

Thank you Tule publishing for this ARC in return for my honest review.

Poor Petra she's not been in the job long and now there's the chance that there's a second murder! Her psychometry helped her last time, so now Liberty and Haven are involved trying to find out what actually happened to Frank, and was he seeing aliens? Or was his second wife making things up as she had something to do with it??and what about his son, Nolan, and daughter, Ivy, were they involved too? What happened to the special rock he was supposed to have found in the desert?

Death at Rock Bottom is the second title in the Reluctantly Psychic Murder Mystery series.

Once again, Petra’s unique ability, psychometry, comes into play as the death of a local rockhound, Frank, has more questions than answers. Right now, only her friend, Liberty, knows of Petra’s ability to ‘read’ an object that a person has recently touched, their emotions flowing through the item into her mind. The more that the details of Frank’s death don’t add up, the more Petra is drawn into the mystery.

Soon, an entire crew of amateur detectives, aka Petra’s old and new friends, will do some serious sleuthing to uncover clues to put the right person behind bars… but there are so many possible suspects.

Death at Rock Bottom kept me on my toes, trying to figure out whodunit along with the rest of the gang. I enjoyed seeing Petra’s growth from the first story in the series. She’s letting people into her solitary life a bit easier, well, sometimes she has no choice, but still she’s not hiding in a corner quite so much.

If you enjoy a well-written mystery or figuring out puzzles, then you’d have a very good time with Death at Rock Bottom. I enjoyed myself, and I’m already looking forward to Petra’s next adventure.

This is the second book in the series. Although people and situations from the first book, this book can be read well enough as a stand-alone. Another excellent novel.

Petra has another death that could possibly be murder to investigate. At least Liberty knows her secret, and maybe she's ready to share it with Haven. It's up to the three friends and their book turned mystery club to solve the death.

This is book 2 in the Reluctantly Psychic Murder Mystery series. It can be read as a stand alone but book 1, A Stone cold murder explains how Petra moves to New Mexico and becomes an employee of the Rock Museum. She and her friend, Liberty are looking into the death of a friend who died in the desert. He had just donated part of a beautiful meteorite to the museum. With people fighting about his will and his best friend now missing the ladies search for Franks killer.

I think the premise of Petra Cloch’s psychic ability is fascinating, to be able to sense the emotions of a person who has held an item. And she’s a geologist working in New Mexico, which I also found fascinating. The story started a little slow, but I settled into it and just let the story take me along the path to what happened to Frank Underwood and his find in the desert and the aliens. There are some positive changes in Petra’s life and some unexpected twists along the way of investigating what happened to Frank, his find, and his aliens. I bought the first book after reading the second one, but I didn’t feel like I needed to read it before the second one. I voluntarily read an advance copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the second book in this series and it is another great story. Ms.Brock pulls you in and makes you feel like you’re right there with the rest of the characters and that is one of the most enjoyable ways, I like to read a story. It has a lot of twist and turns and a lot of suspects to sort out. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys mysteries, suspense, and a touch of paranormal.
