For two brothers, an inheritance triggers a dark chain of events in a thrilling short story of loyalty and revenge by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Flight Attendant.

Aspiring musician Pete Hamilton has nothing in common with his older brother, Leo, an aerospace engineer. Until their late father leaves them the family farm, a sprawling dairy operation in Vermont. Pete wants to hold on. Leo wants to sell. All the embattled brothers can agree on is to skydive over the fields and sprinkle their father’s ashes—a grand gesture the old man would have loved. But when the plan goes terribly wrong, only one unexpected eyewitness can see what’s really going on.

Chris Bohjalian’s The Skydivers is part of Alibis, a collection of stories about lies, truth, and deception. It’s just a matter of what you can get away with. They can be read or listened to in one sitting.

In a Nutshell: The fourth story in the Alibis collection. The first chapter is the only one worth reading. Which isn’t a good thing for a story of eleven chapters. No thrills, no major surprises, not much action, not even any alibi. Can be safely skipped.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview: (Too bored to write sensible sentences, so bear with the below gibberish.)
Two skydivers – one fatal incident – one key witness – many contradictions.
Two brothers – one dead father – one farm – many arguments.
Both the above tracks come to us in alternating chapters and are interlinked.
This is the fourth standalone story in the 'Alibis’ series, described on Amazon as “stories about lies, truth, and deception. It’s just a matter of what you can get away with.”
In my review for the third story, I declared it “the weakest story of the series so far.” I had to put my foot in my mouth and jinx the next one, didn’t I? 🤦🏻‍♀️
Woohoos:
🥳 Chapter One. Great in terms of descriptions and thrill. The perfect prelude to an investigation.
IDKs:
🤔 The idea of having alternate chapters tagged ‘The Day It Happened’ and ‘The Night Before’ was great. The implementation was dull.
Mehs:
🤨 Everything that followed Chapter One.
🤨 The theme of ‘Alibis’ and ‘what you can get away with’ – MIA.
🤨 Characters – cardboard cutouts.
🤨 Thrills – non-existent except in the first chapter.
🤨 Story development – boring. Heavy reliance on conversations than on any concrete action.
🤨 Pacing – Dragged. Took me forever to complete the 49 pages.
🤨 Suspense – Hah! There’s only one suspect, so hardly any problem figuring out the mystery. Hence…
🤨 Predictability – 100%; Surprises – 0%.
🤨 Epilogue – The worst epilogue in the history of epilogues. A total flop of a deus ex machina combined with an infodump. Sheesh!
Basically, I’d rather go skydiving without a parachute than read a story such as this.
1 star (rounded up from 0.5 stars because GR offers me no other choice.)
This standalone story is a part of the ‘Alibis’ collection, and is currently available free to Amazon Prime subscribers.
This one started out good & I was thinking this was gonna be one of the better ones of this series. But it was only one good chapter and the rest was a ‘no’ for me.
When writing a short story, you have to be careful with your choice of plot points and wording to make them really valuable in the short amount of pages. In this case, there was too much pointless explanation that went on and on, and nothing more exciting besides that first scene.
This is the first time in my life I've skipped an epilogue... I think that says it all 💀
I found the story incredibly boring, but hey, it's only 50 pages and it counts as reading, so well 🤷🏼‍♀️
This is a short story in the Amazon Original series, the Alibis Collection.
It is a tale of two brothers whose father has died and who are arguing about whether the family farm should be sold or not. They do agree to do their father's request to skydive and distribute the ashes over the farm. This results in a tragic accident. Or was it planned?
There is an intriguing epilogue which reveals who should have died and why. I found it all very interesting but being a short story there was insufficient page time available for the reader to get to know the two young men or to gain enough information about their back stories. Just three stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Astounding!
Pete and Leo are brothers and they own a farm together. It’s a dairy farm. When their father died, he left his sons the farm. Leo wants to sell it, Pete wants to keep it. The farm has two thousand acres and one thousand cows. Which makes it worth a lot of money.
Leo works at an aerospace company and he makes a decent amount of money. But he still wants to sell. Pete works as a waiter at a restaurant and he is an unsuccessful musician who is abjectly poor. But he still wants to keep the farm. He somehow feels that he can get his brother to let him buy him out on a payment plan.
The brothers promised their father that they would cremate him and spread his ashes over the farm by way of skydiving. Will everything go as planned?
Four stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Another easy one-sit read / listen. This one has a dual narration and that’s always fun for me.
Multi-pov and familial drama make this intriguing. There is a heavy military element to this story which made it fun for me.
A little gory, good mystery but the ending wasn’t super clear at first. I had to go back and reread the last few pages to decipher what happened.
Ultimately a good novella, just not super great. 3.5 ⭐️
The fourth book in the Alibis collection and it’s my favorite so far. I’m not really a fan of this author, but this one was entertaining with a good ending.
the setup…
A woman is cycling around the dairy farmland near Burlington, Vermont when she’s distracted by the sight of two skydivers. Recalling her own great experience, she stops to watch. But then she sees that one of them changes course and starts heading towards an active forage harvester. She watches in horror at the impending disaster. Brothers Pete and Leo Hamilton have returned home following their father’s death to settle his estate but disagree on what to do with the farm. They both agree to his request that they sprinkle his ashes over the fields and are the skydivers seen by the cyclist.
the heart of the story…
Even though the cyclist is the alibi, she comes from a background that makes her an exceptional witness and knows something was off. One of those brothers died and given their disagreement about the farm, suspicion is cast on the survivor. We get a tiny glimpse about the two when it transitions back to before it happened and pick up a few clues. Nothing was as it seemed.
the narration…
Eric Altheide, Soneela Nankani and Pete Simonelli give voice to the brothers and the cyclist. All were great at their storytelling, especially the cyclist who sets up the skydiving scene perfectly.
the bottom line…
I wish this was just a smidgen longer because I just couldn’t get a good sense of the brothers before the skydiving disaster. However, the epilogue wrapped things up nicely with a sweet little twist. I liked it but had to rewind to make sure I heard things right. 3.5 stars
I listened to the audiobook of this one and I liked the narrators. this is a short story so the audiobook is only about an hour long. I know you can’t do a lot in a short story, but I wanted more from this one. I get the connections but I wanted more from the story and I got more details in places than I liked. A pentagon analyst is biking around her home town when she sees two men jump from a plane and fall into farming equipment and instantly be killed. It appears to be an accident but she has to wonder and ask some questions. The story jumps from the day of accident to the day before the accident to fill in some details. I do get the ending, but it left me very unsatisfied. I gave this one 2.5 stars which I rounded up because the narration was so good.
3-3.5⭐️ I am really enjoying this collection of short stories all centered around alibis. Of course I had to start with Chris Bohjalian's as he is a new fave of mine. This is a fun short story, centered around skydiving gone wrong - perfect for getting your heart rate up. It is ominous from the start (and pretty darn gory) and the tension never lets up start to finish. I would have liked a little more from it, particularly around the conclusion and the explanation as to why things happened the way they did, but overall a good little refresh between books.
Thank you Brilliance Publishing for the advanced copy.
Wanting to fill my summer with a mix of novels and short stories, I came upon this collection of short pieces called the Alibi Collection. This short story by Chris Bohjalian depicts two skydivers who take a leap and end up in a tragic landing. Assessing the situation, the sole outside witness and the authorities begin trying to better understand what happened. Could this have been a freak accident or was there a plan in place to ensure death? Bohjalian develops a great story in short order with this piece.
Pete Hamilton may have been a musician on the rise, but he was not in tune with his elder brother, Leo. After their father passes, the family farm comes into play and they must decide what to do. Pete wants to keep it, but Leo sees it as a chance to cut their losses, especially since both of them work in other fields. They bicker and argue, able only to agree that sprinkling their father’s ashes over the property as they skydive is the right end to the man’s life. When an eyewitness watches the leap from the plane and sees one of the brothers miss the desired landing route, she sees him descend in the path of a running harvester. Was this a suicidal end to the family pain or is there more? With authorities trying to piece it all together, the truth is embedded in there somewhere. Chris Bohjalian delivers a great piece and kept me hooked.
I enjoy short stories with a unique angle. Chris Bohjalian successfully ensures the story is both on point and has a few unpredictable moments. The narrative clips along and keeps the reader wondering as it reveals truths in each chapter. Characters are well-placed and serve to add something to the piece. The plot, a mystery unto itself, proves effective at leaving some confusion and forces the reader to be invested in how things end up playing out. I will have to look for more of Chris Bohjalian’s work, as this was a great introduction.
Kudos, Mr. Bohjalian, for a high-flying adventure for me to enjoy.
Whoa. That was intense.
This one started out so good. Until the epilogue and the big reveal. I just wish the ending was done differently.
The scenes were engaging—two brothers skydiving to sprinkle their father's ashes. Only one of them will land on the ground safely. Is it an accident? Or an elaborate murder?
Too bad the epilogue ruined it for me. I was expecting a more appropriate motive.
This short story didn't start bad, but it derailed quickly. And the ending comes from way outfield, and makes you wonder, why? I feel this story lacks execution, and could have gone in many different directions that would have been better.
Normally I don't put up spoilers, BUT I'm going to have a hidden spoiler for those who have read this since I have a genuine question for those confused with this book!
Okay, this collection is actually surprisingly good compared to a few others I've listened to. The previous one though is my least favorite of this series so far, but this one was actually shockingly good and crazy until the epilogue which was mind blowing and had a good twist! I can't wait to finish this collection and see where the last two stories go.
HERE'S THE SPOILER SECTION FOR THOSE WHO HAVE READ THIS CAUSE I WANT TO KNOW WHAT MADE IT SO CONFUSING FOR YOU. SO, HERE'S MY RUN DOWN OF WHAT I SAW IT WAS:
If you were unaware, Amazon regularly publishes collections of short stories penned by well known authors which are sometimes free, and typically available as Kindle or audiobooks. As a fan of Chris Bohjalian, I quickly grabbed The Skydivers on audio knowing only that this collection is titled Alibis.
It’s a little over an hour so there is not enough time for character development, but it’s a nice little themed short story. To me it was ok, but not the Bohjalian you get with a more fleshed out novel.
Just when thinks looks like things are going one way SURPRISE they go somewhere very unexpected. Fortunately this is a "short story" because once you start reading you will not be able to stop.
I enjoyed the dual narration in this one, with the male and female voices. And ok story overall, had the potential to be the best one so far, but the ending fell a little flat for me. The premises of the story was good. Enjoyed the dual timeline concept, alternating between the day it happened to before. Thank you Brilliance Publishing and NetGalley for this listening copy. The Skydivers from the Alibis Collection had me hooked at first. The short chapters kept the pace quick and engaging, and the central mystery—the skydiving death—was really compelling. I found myself coming up with all kinds of theories, and I was convinced the brother was in on the crime.
But then came the epilogue, and that’s where it lost me. Without giving too much away, I just wish the story had taken a different turn. It felt like all the suspense led to a payoff that didn’t quite land. Still, it was an entertaining listen overall—just not quite the ending I was hoping for.
I recently read Chris's historical fiction, The Jackal's Mistress, and loved it! This short story mystery is completely different of course, yet I thought it was an intriguing, layered mystery--especially for a story that only takes about an hour to read!
I’ll read anything Chris Bohjalian writers. This short story confused me. I thought it was going in one direction but what happened was opposite of what I expected (or wanted). I wish the female had narrated the whole story, I wasn’t a fan of the male.
