Conjuring & Crossroads

Rate this book
Hecate, the Greek Goddess of Witchcraft and Crossroads, has so many responsibilities on her plate that she never has time for herself. She definitely doesn't have time for romance-not that she is looking, anyways.

Stefana"Stef" Val recently found out she is a witch under the Norse goddess, Freyja-which, on top of everything else in her already jam-packed life, is something she just can't deal with right now.

But when, thanks to the fates, the pair meet at a winter solstice ball, the spark between them is undeniable. Can the busy pair make space in their complicated lives for their burgeoning romance, and will Hecate ever be able to reveal her truth to the ever-inquisitive Stef?

Oh, and in the middle of dealing with all of this, they have to solve a string of murders. The course of true love never did run smooth...

This book feels somewhere between a mythology-inspired romantasy and an urban fantasy. I thought the concept was really intriguing (also look at that cover?!), and this was an anticipated read of mine. I love books where a mortal and goddess falling in love. However, this book had the added element of a mystery they work on solving together (it’s giving forced proximity). The mystery combined with the main setting being Chicago really screamed urban fantasy to me. I enjoyed how the book didn’t hold itself to one genre seeing as the other major plot is, of course, the romance that unfolds. Additionally, there are gods/goddesses beyond the Greek pantheon as Stef is a witch who is a follower of Freyja.

I became quite fond of Hecate, and I wanted her to have her happy ending. I do wish the book was a little longer or maybe even a duology. I read through pretty quickly because it isn’t a particularly long book, but I would have like to see more of Hecate and Stef’s relationship or maybe had the mystery drawn out longer? Regardless, it was an enjoyable read and I look forward to future works by the author!

Witch x Heacte, with an interesting take on some aspects of the mythos, while others will be familiar. It's a romance at its heart, bundled up with a mystery that directly effects the both of them. Who is killing witches, and stealing their magic? Especially when it gets personal. It's not a smooth journey for either, with lots of bumps along the way, as one would expect.

I enjoyed the story for what it is, and it definitely had its sweet moments. It moved along fairly quickly, with alternating pov's for each chapter. my biggest complaint is that I still have some questions at the end of aspects that didn't get wrapped up as much as I would have liked. For what it set out to do, though, it did well, and I really liked quite a lot about it. 3.5 stars.

Such an interesting take on mythology

I loved the world building of the Underworld where Hecate lives and the readers' introduction to her work there. Reading about Hecate's relationships with different gods and her Nymphs was also very enjoyable.

I liked seeing Stef's struggle to grasp magic and her feelings of inferiority with regards to her picking up magic much later than her peers. Seeing the coven dynamics was a great touch.

The mystery sub-plot was a great touch and added so much interest to the story and character dynamics. The forced proximity was chef's kiss, and the action-packed scenes near the end were amazingly written. They were full of tension and had my heart racing.

I would say that their relationship together moved very fast for my liking. It felt very insta-love-y, which I didn’t love, and at the beginning, I didn't see the crazy chemistry that readers were supposed to sense. Their chemistry only felt palpable around 60% of the way through. If the romance moved slower, I would have loved it that much more.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a fantasy romance, with a forbidden romance, soul mates, and a spooky mystery sub-plot.

Thank you so much to the author, Luciana Morfa, for this ARC in exchange for an honest review

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up. I really liked to see the whole Underworld organization. The plot was a little rushed in the end. It was a fun summe read.
