Broken Pine Bears #1

Two Bears are Better Than One

Rate this book
From USA TODAY and NEW YORK TIMES best-selling author Lynn Red comes a steamy, sexy, hilarious alpha werebear romance... with two times the bears!

Jill Appleton is a witty, slightly-lanky, tall-enough-to-make-most-guys-nervous biologist with a thing for bears.

Whoa, whoa, not like that - she's got a thing for SAVING bears.

When she hears stories of a secretive group of Kodiaks in the Appalachian Mountains, she knows she's got to check them out. First of all, they're not supposed to be there, and second – bears that live in a pack? That's about as rare as biologists who love big crowds. Or, when it comes to Jill, it’s as rare as one of her dates not turning into a train wreck. She's all but given up on finding that one guy who the universe decided was right for her.

Good thing she's about to meet two.

Rogue and King, joint alphas of the Broken Pine werebear clan, could not be more different. King is quiet, stalwart, and strong. He holds clan traditions and history sacred, and refuses to wear anything but a loincloth – the way the elders did. Rogue would rather get a face full of werewolf teeth than bother with all that. He’s feral, wild, loyal to a fault, and loves to guzzle craft beer straight from a keg. And also – a loincloth? Jeans all the way for this bear, thank you very much.

With the outside world coming closer to Broken Pine territory all the time, and the werewolf packs getting more riled up than ever, something is wrong. But, when the two alphas - who according to clan law, both mate one woman, and mate for life - see Jill making her way to camp?

The two alphas feel their hearts beat together, and know in that second that no matter what, no matter how, they will have her, they will possess her. They’ll make her theirs at any cost.

***The Broken Pine Bears is a series of standalone novels each with a complete storyline and HEA ending. No cliffhangers here!***

Lynn doesn't love anything more than being wrapped up in a hammock with her corgi on her stomach and a pile of her favorite books to read. And by "pile of books" she means "a kindle."

She loves all sorts of romance, but especially ones that feature big, strong alphas who will stop at nothing to prove themselves to the women who melt their hearts.

Jill Appleton loves bears and when she hears about a pack of Kodiaks in the Appalachian Mountains, she’s ready to go study them, but her dreams of studying the bears take on a whole new meeting when she meets not one but two alphas who will make her theirs at any cost in this mesmerizing shifter menage romance.

This fast paced and smooth flowing plot holds reader’s captive with lots of suspense, action and romance. The story comes to life with well written scenes and details that capture the imagination and the fascinating world draws reader deeper into the story. The well orchestrated action and suspense builds excitement throughout the story and the strong compelling characters grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning.

Jill can’t believe her eyes when she encounters not one but two bears that shift into men, but that they did right in front her. Then to top it off her body goes haywire and strong desires have her wanting them both which leads to some smokin’ hot sex scenes. The reader can’t help but get caught up in the story as Jill tries to adjust not only to the existence of werebears but that Rogue and King are her mates. But the relationship is complicated further by the fact that Rogue and King have are having a few territory problems that are endangering their mate.

Spine tingling tension and excitement builds as the werewolves attack and humans are in the mountains looking specifically for bears. The author has created a fascinating new world of bears and this story was a thrill a minute with enemies around every tree and full of passion and drama as King and Rogue try to keep their clan and their mate alive. I was completely caught up from the very beginning and I can’t wait to read the next sexy bear tale.

I was a bit conflicted about this book. On the one hand, it is written very well, is engaging and interesting - the characters are ones I want to know more about, but on the other, in seeking to draw out the suspense and unravelling of the mysterious helicopters and original kidnapping of the women in the clan, the result was just a bit confusing and frustrating.
This was a new and novel approach to a shapeshifter story and I appreciated that, but I didn't like that Rogue and King weren't in control of their situation, that they had done nothing but accept that their women had been taken, that they were seemingly so helpless against a completely unknown foe and that they seemed if not content then at least 'okay' to leave it that way.
And Jill was just an enigma to them, they didn't understand how she could be who she was, they tended to turn up for sex and then ignore her at all other times, not giving any of the three of them a chance to actually get to know each other, and in the end it seemed that instinct was the only thing that guided them. Overall, a bit disappointed and I don't think I'll read more in this series.

This was my first Lynn Red book so I didn't know what to expect especially as I'm a recent convert to the Paranormal genre.

Yes, there was humour (and hot sex) and the overall tone of the book was light hearted but the threat to the Werebear community was a significant one...a heavily armed and devious group of hunters who wanted the bears for experiments and who would stop at nothing to capture them.
The "battle" scenes were very well written and vivid.

I found the characters to be well rounded with Rogue and King being two halves of a whole, balancing and complementing each other. This made them perfect menage material for Jill.

The pups were a disparate group and I liked the fact that they didn't all immediately take to Jill and start treating her like a mother. Some were suspicious and wary...just as it would be in real life.

On the whole I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in the series.

I was sent an ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I love Lynn Red’s books, but I think I have to admit that this is now my favorite of them all. It is hot. It is sexy. It is also dangerous and wild. Filled with desires and anticipation, danger and humor. It is just fabulous. A wonderfully brilliant start to what promises to be a fantastic new series. I can’t wait for the next book!

Opening Scene:

“Doctor Appleton?” the voice called to her over the lab’s intercom.

The Review:

Jill Appleton is a biologist with a sense of humor and an intense desire to research the very rare Kodiaks Bears in the Appalachian Mountains; she knows she's got to check them out. First of all, they're not supposed to be there, and second – bears that live in a pack? Unheard of!
Jill is slightly too lanky and too tall for most guys. Her love life is a disaster. Most dates end badly, as in complete disaster type of badly, that’s when she can get one that is. All she wants is a guy to love her. Good thing the universe is sending her two.
Rouge and King are the joint alphas of the Broken Pine werebear clan, and they couldn’t be more different from each other. King is taller, quieter, stalwart and strong. He lives by the old traditions, and holds them sacred. He also only wears a loincloth! Rouge is feral and wild, loyal to a fault and would happily guzzle craft beer straight from a keg. He’s also a jeans kind of bear, no loin cloths for him thank you very much.
With the outside world closing in on Broken Pine territory, and the werewolf packs getting riled up and more dangerous, both alphas know something is very wrong. Then they see Jill making her way to her camp. According to clan law, both mate one woman, and mate for life. When they feel their hearts beat together, they know in that second that Jill is their destined mate. And she will be theirs, they will claim her, posses her, no matter what. They will make her theirs, and they will both be hers.

Notable Scene:

“You’re ours,” the front man said.
“Both of ours,” the other added. They almost seemed to speak with one voice. “We belong to you, and you? To us.”
He touched a mark on his upper left chest. The hand on her neck began to dissipate.
Every time she had one of these visions or fantasies or hallucinations, they were more vivid, longer and more intense. And then when the vision vanished it hurt worse each time.

FTC Advisory: Lynn Red provided me with a copy of Two Bears Are Better Than One by Lynn Red. Published through Lynn Red. Kindle Edition. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

My Thoughts - 3.5 out of 5 Unicorns - I more than liked it!!
***Received the ebook for an honest review

The cover is awesome and very well yummy :) though I wanted to see the mark on one of them, but oh well.

This is a new series by Lynn Red. I don’t usually read the blurb before starting a book unless I’m undecided on buying a book and sometimes I look at a few reviews too; however, I did not with this book because Lynn sent it to me. When I started reading it, I thought it was going to be a Jamesburg book, and quickly realized nope this is a new series.

I usually have a disconnection with the characters and world when I start a new series. This is totally a me problem and not an author issue. Sometimes I will skip the first book or two and after I get sucked into a series, I will go back and read the ones I skipped. I see great possibilities in this series for the future now that I have seen a little of the world though I have no idea where it will go next :)

Jill is definitely strong and independent which I love. The men have this weird dry humor that makes you think really and that they are totally like cavemen, but they grow on you & you get used to their ways. They definitely intrigue you :)

Lynn creates an unusual new world that is completely unique to anything else I have read thus far. There were parts that I found to be slow, but again part of my issues when new worlds are being created. I was confused in a few parts, but it definitely cleared up, and I still have quite a few questions. But there have to be some intrigue to get us to read the next book :)

I think if you enjoy Lynn Red’s work or shifter books, you will enjoy reading this book :) I wonder how long I have to wait for book 2 :)

4 1/2 Stars

This was an interesting and unique book, starting with a scientist, Jill, that is planning to spend a year in the Appalachia Mountains studying a group of bears that act differently than other bears. Little does she know, they act differently because they ARE different. They are bear-shifters, bears that can shift into human or humans that can shift into bears, depending on your perspective. Jill first meets Rogue on her first day on her way to her base camp. He comes to her rescue when she is attacked by several lupines, or werewolves. Rogue fights the wolves as a bear, but has to shift to human when Jill is hurt. He then takes care of her for a week when she's unconscious from her injuries. A few days later, she meets King, and they explain to her about bears, alphas and how two alphas are born for each generation and how those alphas have one mate between them, and she is that mate. From then on, the story is about the three getting to know each other, Jill getting to know the cubs (all the younger member's if the pack), and then the whole group trying to escape from the group that had stolen the majority of their pack 20 years before. This group is called GlasCorp, which we learn more than we ever wanted to know about in the next book.

I recommend this, and the next book in this series, to any fan of shifter romance books, as long as you have no issues with triad groupings.

This book was great! It is the first book in the Broken Pine Bears series. Jill is a biologist and has terrible luck with dating. She has been working for a year to get funding so she can research a pack of bears that have been seen. Her funding has been approved for her to spend time looking and if possible studying this rare pack of bears. Jill has been having sexual dreams about two men that seem real, and they are coming more often. Rogue and King are joint alphas of the Broken Pine werebear clan. They are completely opposite but together they make a whole. They have been fighting for the survival of their pack ever since the men in black came and took away their safety. They have been dreaming of their new mate and Rogue sets off to find her. Jill can’t believe it when she is saved by a bear, which ends up being one of her fated mates. But she really can’t believe it when she is fated to be the mate of not only one but both alphas. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

Was given a book for an honest review. Lynn Red has another winner. Couldn't put it down and can't wait for the next book in the series.Jill has been having these strange daydreams about 2 bears who morph into men. The daydreams are getting more detailed and more real. She is a biologist who goes into the field to try to find a small group of an unknown species of bear who live in packs. She is going to be without the other biologist for a while because he has medical problems. Before she leaves she meets 2 men who want to go with her. Since they are not part of the grant, Jill's boss refuses to let them join her in the field. She uses a helicopter to get as close as she can to the field office and then she and the pilot take her supplies further into the woods to the field office. She takes the last of her supplies back to the field office and things start getting strange. Her mark on her chest gets warm, she meets a wolf with intelligent eyes, and a very large bear that knocks the wolf off her. What next?

I feel bad because I was so excited for this book, but I just can't give it more than 2 starts.

First we meet Jill Appleton she is a human scientist with a love for bears. She also doesn't get laid enough because she is 6 feet and men are intimidated by her. So she gets grant money to go study some bears in the woods of Virginia for a year.

Then we have King and Rogue. 2 very alpha bears who shouldn't exist but obviously they do. Their clan has had all the women and adult men taken, so King and Rogue are the only 2 left to take care of all the cubs. King is stuck in tradition and believes they will help their clan survive while Rogue goes and does normal human activities when ranging and believes traditions should be in the past.

Needless to say Jill is saved by Rogue and she is marked and is now being told she is a mate.Neither of the males act excited about discovering they now have a mate. The story jumps around and there are holes where I was left thinking "WTF happened?"

Seeing is believing and two are better than one.
There are times and people that believe in the impossible and yet when they find it, is still takes time to process that it’s true. Dr. Jill Appleton is one such person. The connection, the dreams, the birthmark and the instant attraction may clue her in but still she is a scientist. But seeing is believing and when the wolves/men attack and the bears/men save her she still has doubts to her sanity. But the men in black are out to get them all and an unknown is there to help. Will they all survive? There are some really hot scenes in this book. Well written with lots of action. Some good laughs to go along with it all. This may be the first book of a new series but it’s still a self-contained book. I received a free copy from the author for an honest review.

Not enough Romance

I'm sorry, I couldn't finish it. I REALLY REALLY wanted to like it!! Heck, my name is Jill and I'm nearly 6 feet tall. I identify so much with this girl! I love her independence, confidence, attitude. The bears were "interesting,"but they were not around for so much of the story that I just stopped caring. It was more about her being on her own, a confusing bit about werewolves and helicopters....sex at odd times and the men just disappear. So disappointed. No romance, sex right after she killed a werewolf... practically doing it on his ashes. Creepy and dangerous. At least go to the clan cave for protection. or sweep. the men/bears then just leave??? leave for days knowing there was danger to her? knowing they tried to kidnap her?? what gives?? Two stars because it had strong possibilities.

First meetings in Lynn's books are fun:
"I touched you, uh," she fell silent, swallowing hard again. "You know."
"What's there to be sorry for? You're the mate I was hunting. I've found you, everything's right."
King that boy is a man's man and hate pants and I find that totally sexy, "an arm slid around Jill without her seeing it, and dragged her to King's solid chest. "I don't wear pants," he said, bending to kiss her throat, and then her chin." Rogue is also a man's man who doesn't like clothes, "I took my shorts off and then I kissed you," Rogue said in the way that belied his lack of full understanding of human society. "What's the big deal?" There was lots of yummy naughtiness in this book and i enjoyed every minute of it.

I WAS GIVEN TO ME FOR HONEST REVIEW:
DR.Jill Appleton gets a grant to spend a year in the Appalachian Mountains to try to find a rare, not see Bear. She is having dreams that are getting stronger and more often, of two beast watching her, then turning into humans and being with her. Telling her "You belong to us, We belong to you". She also hears one say to the other" she has our mark, Don't scare her". She has not told anyone. She finds out at last minute, she will be alone (her boss can't go).
Jill is a big woman an thinks she will be find, though it doesn't take but a few days for her world to change more than she thought it would for the next year,it changes for life.
A GREAT STORY AS LYNN USUALLY PUTS OUT.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I have read other books from this author and loved them. This book was somewhat different than others I have read by her in that there were 2 alphas for the one female mate and these were the last tribe of these were bears. Some parts of the story did not flow naturally, i.e. as pointed out by another reader, why these 2 alphas would leave their mate, they have been waiting for alone for 2 weeks when she has already been attacked twice by werewolves. But overall I enjoyed the story and will defiantly continue to purchase other books from this author.

King and Rogue, two sexy bear shifters find their mate in Jill, a scientist who comes to study an unknown bear species in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Not a lot of studying going on, but she finds herself falling for her bear shifters and fighting by their side against super shifters. A nasty corporation is looking for them for very sinister reasons. Another in a long line of excellent reads from Lynn Red. This is a great original story line. I received an ARC of this book for an honest review and I can honestly say, this was a great read.

Not sure what to say about this book. This is my first Lynn Red book. I struggled in start because it felt like I'd come in middle of story and when the alphas met their mate they didn't seem to excited. They left her alone for a week which doesn't seem right and read like she didn't matter to them. The cubs I really struggled to understand from the story the are only two adults n lots of cubs. They are left on their a lot and don't seem to be parented. Overall other then messy sex I didn't get invested in the characters. No real end or HEA. Very disappointed.

I completely love this story. How crazy is it to be a scientist who studies bears then end up fated to be the mate of to alpha werebears. Fate always surprises you. The two alpha bears are trying to save their kind after all the females are stolen. Sexy encounters, mystery company trying to steal their secrets and experiment on the bears, an old packmate that could be an enemy or a savior, trying to adjust to a new home.... Keeps you hooked and wanting more. Can't wait to see what the future holds for theses characters. Lynn Red knows how to tell a story. Keep the stories coming Lynn.

A Darker Storyline with Wonderful Characters

I really liked the characters in this book. The personalities were well developed. The good guys were very likeable, there were a few surprises as regards who is good and who is bad. And I loved the cubs, would have liked to read more about them. The bad guys were horrific. It appears this will be an ongoing series as only one bad guy got offed. Too bad, I wanted to total annihilation!

That's how bear lover Jill Appleton feels when she meets bear alphas Rogue and King. Great story line with romance, steamy sex scenes and adventure!! Can't wait for more....

I really wanted to like this book, but it just missed the mark in my opinion. I had trouble following parts of the plot when the author was talking about Rogue and King. And while all the elements were there
I just never felt a connection to the characters.
I might try a book from another series by this author, but, I just didn't care for this broken pines.

I enjoyed this start of a new series. There was a lot going on and as usual, Lynn has written characters that you root for and want to see good things happen to. This story is a bit darker than some of her other ones and I can't wait to see what she does with it in the next book.

It wasn't a smooth novel, more chunky than anything, like a copy and paste gone terribly wrong. That's what I get for buying mass quantities from an unknown author. Unfortunately, most of these were a waste of money. I don't want to hate but this author needs to closely look over her/his writing style, it needs to be smoothed out, so readers can enjoy more.

Well, apparently if it's not a Jamesburg Shifter book I not only dislike but actually HATE Ms Red's books. In the last few days I had to force myself to finish 3 of them and I think I'm done punishing myself for wasting money. Shame I have already gotten the next in the series. I won't be reading it.
