Katherine Macdonald

Katherine "Kate" Macdonald writes the books she wishes she could have read more of as a teen—stories of fierce girls and gentle boys, of romance and adventure, and where the "three Cs" (chemistry, communication and consent) reign supreme. There may still be a little bit of miscommunication along the way as the characters grow as people, but she tries not to rely on that trope too much!

She loves books packed with witty banter, stories where you can feel the love growing between a pair, that include excellent, well-developed side-characters and a few subtly-foreshadowed twists and turns. She despises toxic relationships and tales that rely on old-fashioned notions of male and female stereotypes. She enjoys bending expectations and crafting worlds where sexism is a thing of the past. She considers herself an LGBTQIA+ friendly author, and her stories include a range of characters from within the community and absolutely no discrimination in sight.

She holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from Lancaster University, and a PGCE in teaching English and Drama from the University of Exeter. She's been a writer since she was old enough to hold a crayon, but it was only after surviving a year of parenthood and a full-time job on less than six hours of sleep a night that she finally gained the courage to publish her debut novel, "The Rose and the Thorn." It's a retelling of Beauty and the Beast inspired by a dream of a girl surrounded by snow in a field of flowers.

At her heart, Macdonald is storyteller, and it is her dream to inspire others in the way that she has been inspired.

She lives in Devon with her manic child and well-behaved cats.

It's official: The Ones Who Undid Tomorrow is out in the world!

When I first conceived the idea of this book, I knew that the first book (for obvious reasons) couldn't contain Dorian's POV. This was slightly irksome, as I loooove dual POV, but I knew we'd get Dorian's POV somewhere. I worked very closely with my beta and alpha readers to ensure as little as possible was repeated in this volume, but we all agreed that every scene was necessary, and no one wanted to be robbed of all that male pining!

I did think about having this as a trilogy, with book 2 being exclusively Dorian's side of the story, but I ultimately decided against it, as that would mean the middle book of the trilogy essentially had no plot development. I also thought about expanding the 3rd arc into its own book, but that would have meant an awful lot of filler, and I don't do that here.

I cannot wait for you all to read the conclusion of Selene and Dorian's tale, and see them achieve their (very hard-earned) happily ever after.

thank you to the author and booksprout for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review 💖

the ones who undid tomorrow (fantastic title btw) was the sequel ive been itching and gnawing at the bars of my enclosure to get, so when i got my hands on the arc, i read 50% in one sitting. mind you, i had just gotten up and was aimlessly checking my phone on updates and going through my notifications.

the story starts not where the last story ended, but right from the beginning of dorian's journey, and all the lifetimes he's been through trying to put a stop to the duke's nefarious plans. again and again, failure ate at him, unable to save the people he love, and what's more, seeing the woman he loves get married to that monster time and time again. weary and tired, yet he still goes back to the start, hoping maybe *this* time would be the last. we see how not every timeline is the same, and that some times he gives in to the grief, we also see how in a particular timeline dorian and selene even managed to get together before their untimely demise (this is where we were introduced to luna ❤️)

i adored reading dorian's pov, and finally see their feeling reciprocated was such a balm on my poor weathered little heart. they are full on lovergirl x loverboy and its so sugary sweet it lowkey gave me cavities. the revelations of dorian was such a treat to read, and we get to see so many different facets of him. and we see selene's character developed even more, and the climax! but yippee we had a happy ending! can i mention that when they got married (AGAIN and for the final time) it reminded of cinderella and prince charming's wedding in the third movie. not the same but the vibes were there. just me? okay 🥴

my only comment would be on the pacing during the first half of the book, where dorian was recounting his past lives. it was interesting and i loved reading all the questions be answered, but when it reached the current timeline where selene was also included, it was basically the entire first book told through his pov. aside from some bits of info here and there and his own internal monologue, not much was added, and it was kinda tiring to read the same thing, not to mention that that portion was quite long and i kept wondering "when am i going back to my baby selene in the current timeline 😞" maybe if i had taken a break of a few months in between i wouldn't be too bothered, but since the first book was so fresh in my mind still, it became more of a chore to get through. some parts i felt were unnecessary or redundant, and the reveal didnt feel as satisfying as i wouldve liked because some bits of it was revealed by dorian. dorian's recount on his lives, well, some parts i felt didnt add much. the pacing significantly picked up again when we switched back to the current timeline and we were back in selene's pov. though i have to say, because of so much time was spent in the past, the present-day plot felt kind of rushed when i think it could've been developed more instead of focusing so much on recounting the first book again, but a little to the left.

for my darlings, they deserve just one full satisfying lifetime of love and peace. no more timeloops and pain tq :')

Book two is a wonderous flip side to book one, as we now see things mostly from Dorian's POV. It overlap the events of book one but expands immensely on the trials and heartbreak that he went through whilst attempting to alter the tragic events of our star crossed couple has encountered.

Having seen what led him to the events of book one, we gain an even deeper empathy for him, and I already loved him immensely from book one, but you'll simply swoon for him here! His shyness and hesitation with the woman he loves comes from a place of such all consuming tenderness, protection, and overwhelming love.

We learn more about the "rules of time travel" in this one but we also expand upon the ticking clock tension of solving the impending invasion and saving their chance to be together. About half of it is the reverse POV of book one but it never feels redundant. It's sparkling with nuance and inner motivations, conflict, and interpretations that are different from book one since we see his perspective.

We come to a head at one point and resume our suspenseful Mystery about preventing an invasion, whilst also allowing our couple to ruminate in their getting to know each other with complete honesty. They are so sweet and cute together, but also immensely sensitive to the other, gentle, but passionate in all things, including their love but also their protectiveness of the other. The found family extension here, as always with Katherine's work, is sublime! They are a unit of strength and resilience.

I was mesmerized and swept away in this duet. There is such deep emotional connection in this couple and the small moments, the pining, the hesitation, the gestures of touch and sacrifice...are all chef's kiss. Dorian felt so very real, not a big bulky mmc like so many, but rather a handsome red haired, lean and agile Swordsman made all the more adorable because he doesn't see himself as a "catch". Trust me he is, he's beautiful inside and out! And Selene has a fire that I love which also helps lift him up. This romance adventure is one I'd happily revisit! Another stellar duet from Katherine I can't reccomend enough!

Untamed Love Through Time’s Veil

Dorian and Selene’s Fight to Rewrite Destiny

Katherine Macdonald plunges us back into her duology’s breathtaking fusion of political intrigue and sizzling romance. After the pulse-pounding finale of the first book, I blissfully devoured this sequel—and Macdonald gloriously exceeded my expectations.

Shifting Perspectives, Deeper Stakes

For the first half, we see events unfold through Dorian’s eyes—a daring detour that ultimately illuminates his hidden fears and motivations. Watching his guarded heart unravel against a backdrop of past upheavals feels both poignant and electrifying.

When the narrative torch passes to Selene, present-day machinations gain fresh dimension. Her fierce determination and growing empathy transform each twist into a gut-punch of surprise and desire.

Characters Who Breathe and Burn

No one feels two-dimensional here. Every ally and adversary arrives with a fully formed backstory and emotional undercurrent that keeps us invested in their fates.

“His lips curve into a smile. ‘Be gentle with him.’
She smiles right back. ‘As a feather.’ "

Macdonald’s delicate humor lends warmth to even the most intense scenes, making her cast utterly endearing.

An Ode to Empowerment

Beyond character arcs, the novel stakes its claim in broader social terrain. Through Selene’s voice, Macdonald weaves property rights, education, and legal protections into courtly romance—echoing the inheritance debates in Pride and Prejudice. As Selene reminds us:

“If women are able to own their own property, if we have rights to protect us, we are safe from the manipulation of men… If we are educated, we are safe from.... The country is safer as a result.”

This rallying cry for autonomy elevates the story into a powerful elegy for empowerment.

Parting Thoughts

With its dual-timeline structure, unforgettable characters, and thematic audacity, The Ones Who Undid Tomorrow cements Katherine Macdonald as a master of suspenseful, heart-stirring romance. Dive in for a masterful blend of passion, intrigue, and a call to women’s rights—and let it stay with you long after the story ends.

While it was great to get the conclusion of Dorian and Selene’s story, the first half of the book is literally the 1st book of the series told via a different POV. To me this was a lazy way to add content to the book.

When Macdonald did this with her Hades and Persephone retelling I didn’t mind much as it was released separately so if people wanted to re-read the book via a different perspective, they could. This time it’s under the guise of concluding the story, and while that does happen, you have to read through a lot of repetitious past content.

Dual timelines are tricky enough to do well, let alone multiple timelines, but to have basically the entire first book repeated by a different character is just laziness.

Maybe I’m at the point where I stop reading Macdonald’s new books as they seem to be coming out very quickly and simply aren’t the same quality as the ones I previously read and loved.

If you don’t mind re-reading almost an entire book but under a different POV just to get to the HEA, then this book is for you.

I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout,  however this review is completely my own unbiased personal opinion, left of my own volition.

“That was the first time Dorian Nightbloom died. It was far from the last.”

The second half of the To Fall Through Time duology starts a bit like a cross between Edge of Tomorrow and the beginning of Up. It was a pretty emotional read and really set the stage for what we get next. Most of the first two thirds of the book covers the events of book one from Dorian’s POV, filling in a few blanks.

Eventually, we get to where book one left off and the meat of the story. There’s some great twists and turns that I didn’t expect, and it wrapped up the story nicely.

This is definitely an open door book. I guess technically it’s a slow burn, but I can’t tell with time travel. There are quite a few sensitive topics that might make this book hard to read for some people, including death during pregnancy, emotionally detached parents and multiple deaths.

This duology was great fun to read and I’d definitely recommend it to romantasy fans.

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved the first book and this one just delivered even more of what I wanted. And it takes a spin on POV that I love—we not only get to see the story continue but we get to see Book 1 from a brand new perspective.

Dorian was already a favorite from Book 1 and I admit, I was not prepared for how much I wanted to see the world from his eyes. Not only is he still every bit as much of a sweetheart as before but we see everything he has been trying to do. All the struggles to make something right, to help the greater good.

And life just keeps knocking our boy directly on his butt. If you need to see the traumas of what time travel can do…our boy has you covered. I wanted to hug him this entire time!

Selene continues to be a sweet, endearing character and seeing her and Dorian together is good food for my soul! I want them to be happy!

And I dare not give away the twist. But read it, trust me.

I tore through The Ones Who Undid Tomorrow so fast. I absolutely loved it.

The first 60% of the story is Dorian's POV of the first book, and it was incredible. Even though we're reading about the same scenes, with his POV, everything feels different. We get to see how he saw Selene. We get to see him falling in love with her. Fighting for her. Growing as a person. And it makes him all the more swoonworthy.

Once we get past 60%, the story continues on through Selene's POV again and takes us back to where The Girl left off.

This one was just so good. It was heartbreaking. It was romantic. It was a lot of moments that I didn't expect. And nearing the end, there was a twist that blew me away. I had no idea how it was going to end. But I loved every minute of it.

masterfully written

I have to say, I really don’t like time travel — but I have to make an exception for this book. Ooh, so many twists and turns and unexpected surprises! This book was masterfully written, and, though I was a bit frustrated initially with the recounting of Dorian’s tale, let me just say that it was absolutely essential to the second half of the book. I enjoyed every piece, and especially the ending.

I really enjoyed the duology overall, loved the first book, could have done with the first half of the second book been slightly shorter (it was quite repetitive, but nice to see Dorian’s side)
But loved the overall story, the different timelines etc …I would love to hear more from Soren in the future

Thank you to the author for sending me the ARC! I’m so excited to have had the chance to read it and to post this honest review.

Kate MacDonald has done it again. A beautiful ending to this duology that had me enthralled from the very beginning. I loved being inside Dorian’s head and getting to experience the events of book one from his perspective. The second half was just as entertaining, taking twists that I genuinely did not expect. I found all of our main characters so lovable and interesting, and I am so beyond pleased with all of their story arcs.

I laughed, cried, gasped, kicked my feet- you name it!! Kate has very quickly become one of my most favourite authors and I’m certain that I will read just about anything she writes.

If you like romantasy, witty banter, found family, idiots in love- this series (and this author!!) is for you. I would give this series 10 stars if I could!!

This series will steal your heart away with it's time loops, period setting, and tongue-in-cheek references ("how long have you been 17?" "...a while." just killed me 🤣)

If you're looking for a second chance tale with treason, murder, romance, and overcoming personal trauma, then please read Selene & Dorian's tale 💕 you also get full backstory & see things from both main character's POVs.

Soren is a sweetie too, little murder-happy boy 😅

(Also, thank feck the ARCs for this opened not long after I read book 1, I was so excited to read this!!!)

This book begins with Dorian in the past, right before book one, and shows us his side of the events of book 1 through the present (aka the end of book 1.) I really liked seeing it all unfold through his eyes. I love that he continuously took a chance to try to fix things even when it was dark. His love for Selene was glorious even through heartbreak and all the different trials they go through. Even when he was fighting it, he couldn't stop trying to help her and keep everyone safe. I also really liked how the overall mystery was wrapped up. It was unexpected in a really good way. I truly loved this duology. I miss Dorian and Selene already.

I'm just in love with this book

It was absolutely perfect

After book 1, I didn't think I could love the characters more than that buuuut they've got some of the most beautiful lines I've ever read.
I love that we got Dorian's side and more of Soren, I want him to be my little brother now

I devoured this book, jumping from heartbreak to pure joy several times. This has been an amazing experience and is definitely my favorite duology now

I couldn't recommend you enough to read it

This book was a good and satisfying ending to the story but it took a while to get there, which I didn’t enjoy much.
After the “cliffhanger” at the end of book 1, I was expecting to dive right in and continue that timeline. Instead, we got a tiny bit of Dorian’s past, and a very detailed (and long, I’d add) retelling of what already happened in the first book but from Dorian’s POV. This would have been fine if the characters hadn’t been doing almost everything together. In the end, it just felt very repetitive to me, and too long for a different book. The book only moved on from what we already knew after the 63% mark, which really felt like too long and made me not enjoy this book as much as I would otherwise.
Because so much of the book was spent on that, the resolution in the end felt a bit rushed, for what happened. I think, I needed a bit more exploration of that last part of the book, especially after the timeline was reset again. I also think the last twist about the villain became too obvious after seeing things from Dorian’s POV, and the story would have benefited of not being so predictable.
Besides this, which ended up colouring my view of the book as a whole, I’m afraid, I enjoyed where the story went, I enjoyed reading that part after 63%. There’s not much I can say without spoilers, but it was an interesting take.

A beautiful conclusion to a wonderful duology! Dorian is the soft love interest I didn’t realize I was craving to read. I loved his POV! I didn’t like this one as much as the first. The first 18% was interesting because it shows Dorian’s previous timelines. But after 18% it was basically copy and paste from the first book until a little over 60%. There was not enough of Dorian’s thoughts and unseen actions to justify showing his pov for the current timeline. I remember reading some paragraphs and thinking it was the exact same phrasing as in the first book so I would not be surprised if the author truly did copy and paste.

The third part was more engaging than the second, but it still had a lot of flaws. Selene’s mother being the hidden villain was not shocking, yet I also found myself wondering if her reasoning was substantial. She and a slew of upper class ladies were apparently behind the whole invasion plan, yet we never really see or hear anything about them being oppressed in Haverland. The only example of a woman being oppressed is Selene. No other woman really expresses any hidden displeasure at their lot in life. And we only really learn that Ashvold is progressive VERY late in this book. The nature of that country should have been planted in the first book.

Also, Selene’s engagement to the king of Ashvold was so random and made no sense?? We didn’t even know he was in Haverland. Why was the enemy king there? I thought the mountains were impossible to cross? Why did he have his own palace in an enemy country? I thought Selene was talking to HER king and proposing an alliance with HIM when Erik was brought up. We didn’t even know who Erik was and then she’s suddenly engaged to him. That part was really odd and I had to reread those pages because I was so confused at his easy appearance.

Despite all that, I still did enjoy the conclusion to Dorian and Selene’s story. Their devotion to each other was literally timeless

Thank you to Booksprout and Katherine Macdonald for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

As someone who really enjoyed the previous book, I was really looking forward to see how the story concluded! To get the negatives out of the way first, I personally tend to not really like the whole "exact same story, different PoV" thing since it can just come off as lazy if executed poorly. Thankfully Katherine's stories always manage to be entertaining, but because this book does that while also being a sequel to the previous installment, it does unfortunately make the ending feel rushed. As a result, I feel like splitting the first book between Dorian and Selene from the start would've been preferable to just retelling the events of the first book from his PoV.

That aside, I still very much enjoyed the book overall. Dorian and Selene are probably my favorite Macdonald couple besides Juliana and Hawthorn, and of course, I loved all the other characters too, especially Soren. And Lady Duskbriar was very intriguing as well!

I've also always loved the "I Will Find You" trope, especially if it's coupled with some sort of supernatural element, so seeing Dorian fall in love with Selene again and again was beautiful. I especially loved this line here:

It's giving Would You Fall in Love with Me Again? and I love that!

Overall, another very enjoyable read by one of my favorite authors!

Okay I have to say that the title is just so cool and this book's cover? Absolute chef's kisses!!

I picked up the sequel right after finishing the first book because of that cliffhanger, but honestly, I shouldn’t have done that. It’s better to give yourself a long break, let the suspense simmer and your curiosity linger, before diving into this one.

As much as I love reading mmc's pov, especially when he’s head over heels for the fmc, but this just didn’t work for me. I appreciate that the author tried to retell the current timeline from Dorian’s pov, but I didn’t expect it to feel so similar to the first book.

The first nine chapters of Part One (the past) were incredibly engaging and had me hooked right away. It broke my heart that Dorian had to keep going back in time, losing his loved ones in those timelines, just to save Selene from the tragic fate caused by the Duke.

However, once the story picked up from the point where Selene returned to the past, it started to feel a bit exhausting. I kept pushing through nearly 250 pages just to make sure I didn’t miss anything important from Dorian’s pov. I’ll admit there were some parts that reflected Dorian’s feelings and his efforts to gather evidence against the Duke, but overall, it still felt like a repeat of the first book, just from his point of view.

Another thing that didn't work for me was the . I love the idea of it, but I just couldn't bring myself to enjoy their romance as much as I hope during that timeline because it's just feel so wrong (ik it's a fiction, but it's so serious to me 😾)

By the time the story returned to the present timeline, the pacing felt a bit rushed. It seemed like they just got lucky uncovering the evidence of the treason, relying more on the convenience of time travel with the goddess’s help than on any solid planning.

Honestly, I think this duology would’ve worked better as a standalone with dual povs. I’d be way more invested in the present timeline, reading them work together to save their country.

Anyway, thank you to the author and Booksprout for providing the e-arc 🫶🏻

This book had me in tears.

Katherine understands how to write a story in a way that absolutely captivates my very soul. She writes the most heart wrenching, beautiful, incredibly emotional works of absolute art and I am completely blown away every time I open one of her books.

I finished reading the first book and thought, “The second one cannot possibly be better than that.” But I should have known better.

I loved reading the chapters from the first book in Dorian’s POV. It was so necessary to have those moments because up until the reveal at the end of book one, we are really missing a lot key info. And those chapters from his POV nearly destroyed me.

Selene and Dorian’s alternate timelines….the love they shared that she didn’t even remember…what was taken from them….the fact that he remembers every excruciating second of it…

The entire book is just absolutely amazing storytelling.

I won’t spoil the ending or give too much away but the twists and turns at the end were so satisfying and I have to admit, I did a lot of my crying in the last 20%.

But it was happy crying, I promise.

Selene and Dorian’s story continues with more heartache as they try to manipulate events in this second part of the story. It’s well written with interesting and descriptive characters, plus there’s an unexpected twist at the end which I didn’t see coming.

After the cliffhanger at the end of the first book in this duology I wasn’t expecting this book to start where it did, which was back at the beginning of the tale. It was good to cover events from Dorian’s perspective this time, but reading this book straight after book one left me frustrated at times as I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next, but equally I didn’t want to skip chapters either, so it’s quite a long book. If there’d been more of a gap between reading both books i think I’d have enjoyed it more, as it was I was wishing for a more condensed version of events up to the point where the first book finished. So, if my home has more dust than usual I’m afraid I’ll have to blame this author 🐈‍⬛.

A really cool twist on the double POV
I read the previous book with Selene’s POV and I really enjoyed knowing Dorian’s. It was almost like watching a movie! In this book, we glean more about the enemies, the romance, the time-travelling, and some other background elements. The different viewpoints lend us a more in-depth grasp of the behind-the-scene actions that precede the up-coming war.

The title is perfect and this line in the book description provides a completely new perspective to our understanding of destiny: “Because fate is not a thread to cut. It is a hand—and someone is still holding the scissors.”

Fave line:
‘Fairy tales are a great way to tell the truth in a way that’s often overlooked.’

May we soon live in a world where we can make healthy choices for ourselves and our descendants.

'There existed no timeline in which he would ever let her fall.'

Am I mad, or did this book have a Twilight reference? (this quote might be a little bit of a spoiler)
"How Old are you, Soren?"
"Seventeen."
"And how long have you been seventeen?"
"Um...a while?"

I burst out laughing when I read this.

So, onto the book. 70% of 'The Ones Who Undid Tomorrow' is the first book, but in Dorian's perspective. I have seen some reviews saying this let the story down and was unnecessary...NOT IN MY EYES! I can see where readers are coming from, but I am so obsessed with 'The Girl Who Fell Through Time' that re-reading it all over again in a diff pov is perfection to me. And it's not all the same; we find out where Dorian went some nights, his thoughts, and also other timelines...
I just felt so heartbroken for Dorian and Selene at the beginning of this sequel. Finding out the whole story of Luna and Dorian. Ugh I could cry.

This duology has taken me by surprise and I am so happy to have found two new favourite books <33

The Ones Who Undid Tomorrow is a wonderful conclusion to Katherine Macdonald‘s To Fall Through Time duology. My expectations were high because I adored the first book, and this book exceeded them. The first part of the book focuses on Dorian’s point of view. The story from his perspective is heart wrenching and beautiful at the same time, and I’m so glad I got to experience it. The series itself is moving and thoughtful with a few twists that I did not see coming (in the best way!) All in all, this series is one of my new favorites that I will definitely revisit time and time again.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
