*Update* I just read this one again and had a few more thoughts:

Melanie is always being dumped and when her BFF, Patti, steps in to help, it's not a pretty picture. Patti comes up with some rules that's going to make dating a whole lot harder now and the price? Melanie's new car. If she doesn't follow the rules, Patti gets the car.

Melanie works at a gym and I love the easy banter the employees have with one another. They have a word of the day, joke around, and have a good time. Matt is a great guy and attractive to boot, but he's a player. Isn't he? I enjoyed watching Melanie learn to focus on what's really important, instead of coming off as completely desperate and easy.

This story has quite a bit of innuendo. I didn't find anything over-the-top inappropriate, but Melanie is a much morally loose character and as I mentioned before, willing to do whatever it takes to keep a man (desperate/easy).

(9/13)I was so confused!! I downloaded this when it was free and never bothered to read the description, since I enjoy the stories Ms. Hatler writes. I kept thinking, "I've read this before--I know I have." but when I looked on my goodreads shelf, I hadn't. I thought maybe I read it and forgot to review it, but then, on my second check, I noticed that it mentioned The Boyfriend Bylaws. Yes, it's been updated and released under a new title. That made me feel so much better!! I seriously thought I was going crazy.

That said, I really enjoyed this short little story. Melanie has bad luck with men and jumps into a "relationship" at every chance, only to find herself burned. Her good friend and roommate comes up with some rules to help her find a healthy relationship and what she discovers surprises even her.

The characters weren't super developed, but the reader gets a feel for who they are and their personalities, knowing that it's a novella. I loved some of the funny situations Mel found herself in--very giggle-worthy.

Content: technically clean, but brief references to intimate things and situations.

Originally published awhile ago as The Boyfriend Bylaws, this romantic novella has been re-titled to fit into the "better date than never" series and I'm so happy to see it there. I'm super lucky that Susan has always been so generous to gift me copies of her books for review. I just love them and I think she is amazing too.

I am going to re-post my original review of this book because although there were some adjustments made for the re-release of this novella, my review still stands. :) (3.5 stars)

I really liked this book with a slight catch which I will explain later. :)

Hello? Set in Sacramento? My growing up stomping grounds... How could I not appreciate that? The characters were fun. The story moved along quickly and ended all too soon in my opinion. I would sure like to see a longer version of this. I think the employees being caught in the janitorial closet was very funny and I loved the word of the day idea. So much fun. The conversations felt natural and easy. Loved the happily ever after ending.

My conservative reader side needs to mention (especially to all my squeeky clean reader friends) that while there was no explicit sex scenes, there was talk of having been there and going there. Buying lingerie, having the wrong kind of underwear on for pre-sex play... Characters in the book have implied sex, not detailed.

Susan Hatler has a fun way of writing that I really enjoyed. My thanks to her for letting me read her book. And my congratulations. :)

Melanie Porter is unlucky in love; she's been dumped too many times for her to really believe in The One. She is looking for stability and love but maybe she's looking in the wrong places and her One True Love is right in front of her.

Melanie's story is kind of cliche. She's a girl who looked in the wrong places too much to see the right one. Or too scared to actually pursue the right guy in the right and rational way. She's quickly jumps into commitment mode with guys she dates. However, these things are only getting her dumped 'coz nothing scarier than throwing C-word in a guy's face who just got together.

Mel and Matt who have known each other since childhood have been dancing around each other for so long that it gets harder to not get serious by the time they start looking for the same thing in relationships. He's very smart guy and very sweet and supportive of Mel. Other than that, I wish there was more about him and his family and his and Mel's childhood history. That why I think this one lacked in depth compared to other stories in the series.

A Twist of Date
Better Date Than Never, Book 5

I Picked Up This Book Because: My Bingo spinner chose an ARC and I randomly chose this.

Media Type: Netgalley/Audiobook
Source: Hoopla
Dates Read: 5/13/24
Rating: 2 Stars
Narrator(s): Martha Lee

The Characters:

Melanie Porter:
Mike (I think):
Patti (roommate), Coworkers at the gym

The Story:
I unfortunately didn’t enjoy this one. I think Melanie came off as a boy crazy 14-year-old girl instead of a 27-year-old grown woman. She did make some strides in maturing but not many. At the end of the story, she still found her happiness in a man and not herself.

This story is perfect for an afternoon read. It is charming and sweet the way the main characters dance around each other and it takes the best friend to show them what they were missing in each other.

This is book five of the Better Date than Never series and the main character is Melanie Porter, who always seems to believe that her latest boyfriend is ‘the one’! Everything seems to be going well with her latest boyfriend, who she sees a few times a week, but who still likes going out drinking with his friends most weekends, even though they are both in their thirties now. Melanie works as an aerobics instructor at Totally Fit, with Zumba as her early morning class. She has a flatmate Patti, who is also her friend, but somewhat difficult to get along with at times. She works along with Matt, who works at the front desk and has been studying for his PhD, Steve who is a personal trainer and Erica who is another aerobics instructor. They are all pulled over by Erica who has overheard some gossip about the future of Totally Fit, which has been having some money issues with their current manager even letting the janitor go. The group have been friends for ages and have a funny tradition of Melanie coming up with a word for the day, when she comes in each morning. Sometimes this will reflect what has been happening in her life.
After she sets herself up to ask her boyfriend of just three weeks, if he is ‘committed’ to their relationship and if they can move on to the next step, he leaves suddenly, commenting he was only after a bit of fun! When she complains to Patti, she is not surprised at all and reminds her that she thought each of her last four boyfriends, were all the one! She is in love with being in love, something that had to be pointed out to her by her friends, more than once. Her teenage years were disrupted by her mother leaving her father, to run off to do what she wanted, making a serious relationship the only type Mel is wanting and believing she has each time! She asks Patti for some dating help and Patti comes up with a list of rules Mel must follow before she can even accept an offer of a date or even give out her phone number. There is the addition of Matt actually asking her out who she was told was a player, so isn’t interested and now the rich relative of the current owner who has taken over the gym, asking her out. If she breaks Patti’s rules, she will lose her beloved Beetle! Sometimes the person who you should be with, is right in front of you, you just have to recognise their worth! The story has a very sudden HEA ending, which detracts a little from the story, but great to see all the other characters in the mix that you know if you have read any of the other books in the series. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

This story was a fun one. I loved the incorporation of friendship in this story. Melanie was a great character and Matt was perfect for her. Patti was a great sidekick who really helped Melanie in finding the “one.” The whole story was amazingly written and was fully enjoyed. It’s a great, quick read for a good lift of spirits.

The story follows Melanie. She’s been dumped again only because she requested commitment. On top of that, she believes that she will never find the one and that she will always fall in love with idiots. One more thing to add to her mess is the fact that she secretly likes her friend Matt who is a complete player. Erica, another one of her friends, went on a date with him and notice that he was playing the field at the same time. That’s why, even though Matt asks, Melanie doesn’t go out with him. Now her friend, Patti, has come up with a series of laws that Melanie has to follow to date or she will lose “Betty” her convertible Volkswagen Beetle. Patti know directs every aspect of Melanie’s love life.

I love the books in this series. Each book can be read as a stand alone. They are all fun and flirty. Sweet and clean romances, and are quickish reads that are highly entertaining. I have read all of these books out of order and it has not effected the reading of this series.

Written as a 1st person, single pov with a HEA ending. Great story lines, awesome characters, engaging dialogue, and easy to visualize detailed descriptions.

Would I recommend this book? Yes

This is the fifth book in the Better Date than Never Series. The collection of ten books are about friends who follow their heart and find love. This book can be read as a standalone but if you've read any of the other books you'll recognize some of the characters. I recommend reading the books in order. The book is lighthearted, easy to read and overflowing with sweet romance. This book is written from a single POV and in the 1st person. This is Melanie's story and she was so in love with love that she fell in love with every date. Her friend Patti comes to the rescue with some boyfriend by-laws. This was a clean romance that was a fun, short read. I read a free book via Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.

Melanie Porter has a tendency to jump right in when it comes to love – and immediately gets dumped. It seems like she is just in love with love, and she scares off all the guys. So her best friend and roommate, Patti, is going to help her navigate these difficult pathways. She makes up a list of Boyfriend ByLaws to follow as guidance so she doesn’t keep making the same mistakes over and over. Is this finally going to work for her? Will it help her dating experiences? Will she really find her one and only? And will she recognize him when she does?

When Melanie gets dumped again, she turns to her friend Patti. Patti has a list of dating rules. Will these set of rules but Patti help Melanie or will she get dumped again. This is a funny romantic comedy book. I started with this book but quickly realized that they all need to be read in order. However, this is a good book.

Better choices

I love the cover premise for this book with its list of rules. It was exciting which characters we got to revisit from the previous book. I liked the parts in here about being in love with the idea of love. I think it is something that happens way too often and maybe this book should be a required reading for all females launching themselves into dating.

Another entertaining and quite relatable story as the main character is always looking for Prince Charming/The One, and not really taking into account her reactions and feelings to someone who is really near her and is always helping and trying to protect her. As it could not be different, there are many very funny situations, where I laughed a lot, and some characters - I´m sure - most readers have met someone like them before!!!

Cute, Clean, and Funny Ron-Com
This romantic comedy is so cute and funny! This is a novella-length story about trying to find 'the one'. The characters are funny without being stereotypes. Our heroine is a bit ditzy and has some growing up to do. This book is part of a series, but is written to stand alone. The series share location and characters, but each is its own story. I have read many books by this author and have enjoyed them all. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a beautifully written, shorter romance that was an easy read. I read the book straight through, I couldn't put it down. I loved the storyline, cast of characters and all the humor with the sweet. Patti was a great friend, I wish she was mine. It will leave a smile on your face and and ready for book 6!

A twist of date is # 5 in The Better date than never series.
When Melanie dates so many wrong men, her friend Patti steps in and tries to help her out. Patti came up with a bunch of rules that are called The boyfriend by laws that Melanie has to follow or she will lose her prize possession.
Melanie has always had her eye on a certain man, but she was informed that he was a player. She decided she did not want a relationship with someone like that.
However, when her friend came clean about the rumors about Matt, she changed her mind. Will her and Matt get together or will they break of their friendship over a huge lie?

Susan Hatler is an awesome author and I love all of the books in this series so far. Mel was hurt when her mom left her and her dad. She felt abandoned. As an adult she was determined not to be like her mom. Matt worked with Mel but had feelings for her. The problem is that a co-worker told her that he was a player. She did not want to be hurt like her mom hurt her dad. She was afraid of what would happen to their friendship if they dated and did not work out. She came up with a plan that her best friend would choose her next boyfriend since she seemed to choose bad ones. This was a very interesting book with all the different relationships and how her childhood effected all of her different relationships including friendships.

Melanie really does fall to hard and fast when it comes to guys and needs to take a deep breath before launching into forever plans thank gawd she has her bestie Patti! The list Patti makes is fantastic and she totally has Melanie's best interest at heart but you still wonder if she has the will power to resist her old ways especially with the new guy at work. Then there is Matt who she also works with a and keeps asking her out but she won't so you are kept wondering who will she end up with.. anyone or no one. Best you read it to find out!

The story wasn't what I expected, but it's a good story afterall. Mel (Melaine) is a player who wrongly accuses Matt of being one based on a rumor. That relationship is only cursory to the story though which is really more about Mel learning who she is and accepting others as they are.

Entertaining. Happily Ever After. Haunting. Romantic. Tear-jerker. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

Another extremely entertaining story by Susan Hatler. The story is a creative in finding love and romance for Melanie by using the boyfriend-by-laws written by her best friend who has all the power over who she can date. Melanie and Matt characters have great chemistry and their story is very humorous and amusing. Totally a wonderful story for enjoyment and laughter.

Her books are so much fun and have such great, relatable characters and stories that are just over the top enough to make us feel better. This story did not disappoint. Melanie needs to get her love life in order and since she isn’t successful she leaves it up to her friend, Patti to do it for her. Another great, clean, fun romance from Susan Hatler!

This is the fifth book in the Better Date Than Never series, and is as charming and sweet as all the rest. It's a short , fun story, good for a quick afternoon or evening read. Melanie is in love with the idea of love and each time she thinks she may have found it, he ends up being Mr. Wrong. Finally her friend Patti steps in to help her out by coming up with a set of rules Melanie has to follow in order to get her Mr. Right. With fun, lovable characters and a smooth storyline, this was an absolute delight to read. This is just such a wonderful series, and I've enjoyed every book so far and I can add this one to the list as well. Great read! I am happy to recommend this book!

This is a short contemporary romance. Although it can easily be read as a stand-alone story, it is actually book 5 in a series. Whilst we have been previously introduced to Melanie in other stories in the series, it isn’t required to be read them in sequence to understand this storyline. This is a cute and complete romance story that will end with a happily ever after. If you’re looking for a book to spend a few hours with this is the kind that you can read in one afternoon sitting.

Thank you to the Author, Publisher and Booksprout for the opportunity to read and review an eARC and give my unbiased opinion of the story.
