Communicating clearly and effectively is something that takes education and practice. Sure, anyone can talk, and many people talk… and talk… and talk... with nothing really to say. This is usually when we begin to completely zone out and not pay attention to what’s being said. So we don’t really understand what the person is saying, and we absently answer with “mmhmm” or the occasional smile and nod. Effective communication turns that awkward situation into a real conversation, yet it’s an art that few people truly understand.
How many times have you caught yourself having to repeat or clarify what you just said because no one understood it? This often happens because you didn’t communicate effectively enough to get the overall idea across. We have to consider our body language, tone of voice, and use of sarcasm in order to master communication skills.
“Instant Communication Skills: How to Improve Communication Skills Instantly” is a very quick read and it cuts straight to the point. The author skips over the clichés and adages, and focuses on really teaching you how to be a better communicator. He focuses on teaching the reader to pre-think through conversations, engage with questions, create communication habits, and use positivity.
Take a while to follow the exercises the author gives beginning in Chapter 3. The five exercises should really make you think and help prepare you for effective communication with others. Include a friend to make it more entertaining and engaging. Choose a friend who also has problems communicating if possible, so it helps both of you simultaneously.
Take the time to practice nonverbal communication skills as well. Body language goes a long way in communicating effectively.
In a nutshell, I really enjoyed this book, even though it was short. I usually go for a much longer read, but I did like the way the author communicated the subject matter. This in itself shows that the author is a good communicator who is teaching others how to more effectively communicate. What better way to teach than from experience?
This would be a great book for high school students or college students who need that extra bit of help with public speaking and communication.
This book taught me several new techniques for improving my communication skills. It speaks on the importance of body language, both yours and theirs, and how you may be pick up body language but not know exactly what it means.
I enjoyed the section on thinking before you speak. I always seem to say the wrong things and then LATER what I should have said comes to me. It talks about QUICKLY forming your words and reply in your mind and knowing when you should do that and when you should just spit out a reply. One of the examples they give is about Facebook posts, and how you probably edit or delete what you were going to say before hitting send. You can do something like that mentally but quickly, so that you don't say the wrong thing.
An issue I have is with written messages, such as texts and emails. It suggests creating a reply schedule and letting those around you know what it is. Such as I answer all texts within 20 minutes and emails are answered between x and x each day. It goes over how people read emails or texts in their own context, not exactly how you mean it, so you do need to be POSITIVE so that they read it in a positive tone. I lol'd at the part about if you think they are insulting you, call them up and let them do it to your face. They are right, you could be reading it wrong.
All in all a GREAT book on communication. I think I've learned lots of tips that I can use both professionally and personally.
In today’s world, communication skills are so important and essential to succeeding in whatever career that you choose to pursue. I’m in the communications field and I still feel as though I need some brushed up at times after being away from people for a while. Sometimes I find that I have problems getting my point across or having my messages understood. I noticed that in meetings, sometimes people have difficulty understanding what I am trying to say and it is sometimes hard to get them to understand my ideas. I decided to pick this book up in an effort to improve my communications skills.
Through this book I learned a quick and easy thing that helped to make my communications skills more attractive. There are some great ideas in this book on the best practices of how to be a better communicator. I applied some of these and they do worked, such as I have noticed I'm willing to talk to more people.
When you have that eagerness to wanting to communicate with people they take you more seriously and listening to what you say.
One extra bonus to this book is that it also covers written communication and how to be effective with it. I feel like the book can really help anybody improve their skills. It's quick, it's short, and to the point for anybody needing a little brushed on.
Even the best communicators can get a few tips from this book. I consider myself excellent at communication, but when I overheard a successful colleague talking about it, I had to check it out. Upon further investigation I decided that it was worth the low price, especially considering the “Best of the Month” award the book received from Amazon’s editors.
When reading this book, and reflecting on my recent communications with clients, I realized that I was occasionally being misheard and misunderstood. Not only did this book bring me to this realization but also it provided the tips and skills needed to overcome the barriers. I have found that, even in situations with non-native English speakers, I am being heard and understood more easily.
Besides improving my in-person communications with clients, I have also picked up a few tips for phone calls and writing emails.
Instant Communication Skills is a quick read and one that will definitely help to improve anyone's communication skills.
The book is organized in way that starts out with small steps to reaching your communication goals. It is succinct and to the point, without fluff or extraneous words to drown the message. Since reading the book, I have noticed that I understand conversations much better and am able to summarize the points of each interaction I have with numerous people each day.
For a quick, self-help book that gives some good suggestions for improving your communication skills, Instant Communication Skills is a good once to choose.
Probably a 2.5. If you want a brief, generic overview for communication skills, this might be helpful. I would suggest this for students or those who struggle with public speaking or with getting tongue-tied in group settings. The Instant premise helps keep the book very brief without repetitive chapters and unnecessary filler. A good editor would be beneficial for this book, and some of the information was not convincing. However, for a very quick read, it could prove an asset. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
