This is the seventh and last book of the Time Patrol - Nancy Laplante series.
From the streets of 1854 London, to the battlefields of the Crimean War, to the French siege lines around Maastricht in 1673 and to the besieged Paris of 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, Nancy Laplante 'B', a young field agent of the Time Patrol, continues with her missions in the 17th and 19th Centuries, finding both adventure and love, but also heartbreak.
In Timeline 'C', a parallel line to the original historical timeline, Ingrid Dows is in charge of the American space program and is also a very influential presidential advisor. She also made many enemies who are jealous of her power and influence. While dodging bullets, missiles and political daggers, Ingrid will lead the United States in a series of spectacular accomplishments in space.
I retired from the Canadian Forces in 2006 after serving 32 years. I am married, with two grown sons, and live in Boucherville, on the South Shore of Montreal. My native language is French and I am fluent in English, plus speak a limited Spanish. I read a lot, mostly about history, military affairs and technology, air and space events and World news. My hobbies are writing and reading. I write strictly as a hobby, not to make money, and offer my books free online. While PDF versions of my 17 first ebooks are available online on Goodreads.com, you will find other versions online on Free-Ebooks.net. Please note that Goodreads does not allow anymore to make PDF copies of new ebooks available from my author site. If you are interested in my newer ebooks and don't find links for them on Goodreads, please send me a message via GR and I will be happy to send either a PDF, Kindle or Epub copy of my book(s) by email.
I'll preface this review by saying that I did not read the first 6 books in the series, so I was not aware of a lot of the backstory surrounding the Time Patrol and Nancy Laplante. I would highly recommend starting from the beginning of the series.
This is quite a literary effort. It covers numerous historical and future eras, three different "timelines," and a healthy dose of science fiction. Poulin incorporates many famous historical figures and, in some cases, presents a cheeky perspective on how these figures interacted with each other. I've never read anything quite like it.
I also thought the details of each historical era were well done. The Crimean War and Louis XIV's court descriptions were well-researched and evocative.
Where I struggled most was the motivation of Laplante and Dows. They seemed more like superheros that could do no wrong than fallible characters who I wanted to root for. I kept asking myself why were they doing what they were doing. For the most part, I felt like I was reading a chronicle of historical events as opposed to a character-drive story. Only a couple of times did Laplante have to make a difficult decision, and when she did, everything was resolved quickly.
Overall, a unique read that makes you wonder what would happen if we could travel through time at will and have our actions impact the future.
I am in awe of Michel Poulin! The complete Nancy Laplante series is captivating from start until the end. The books are interesting on so many levels: the stories themselves, the history, the political insights, the high "what if" factor...
I certainly have learned a lot about the different time periods that feature in the books, e.g. I only knew the Crimean war by name and now I have knowledge about how people lived in that time period, who fought the war, why it was fought, how it was fought, what the living (and dying) conditions of the soldiers were,... The same goes for the other books that feature the Korean war (of which I knew very little about) and the Vietnam war (of which I mistakenly thought I knew sufficient about).
Apart from the history aspect, there is also a lot of technology in the stories. The parts about the development of the jet fighters and the space program had me completely enthralled. The introduction of modern fighting techniques and strategies in past wars kept me turning pages, even when it was well beyond my bed time ;-)
All in all, the many hours spent reading these 7 books were hours well spent. I can't praise this series enough. A big thumbs up and five stars all the way!
