Review now posted 15/1/18

Still contains copious SWEARING and SPOILERS

So I'm still angry over this book. I tried to calm down before writing this but it seems whenever I try to collect my thoughts over it and write a coherent review I get pissed off all over again. I'm going to try to put the things I didn't like in a list and you can decide if you want to read it or not. Many of us have limits/pet peeves and hard lines we don't like reading so I'll try to cover the basics.

I think I've covered most of it without glaring spoilers so I'll end my massive rant here. I've seen many reviews praising this so please do check them out and do try the book for your selves. Just because it made me feel book-rage (much like road rage) doesn't mean it will for you.

ON PAUSE - 14/1/18

WARNING, SWEARING AHEAD

After waiting all this time for this to be published and then not reading it, because who the hell knows when the third one is coming out, I am extremely pissed to read it until 63% only to find the three Seasons, kidnapped and . I am so fucking angry to be waiting all this time only to read this. For fucks sake, what the fuck! The whole first half was full of repetition and a heroine that was annoying and heading towards the TSTL category with her assumptions and non communication only to get this bull. If I could I'd rate this with minus stars.

The Sea King is a carbon copy of CL Wilson’s Tairen Soul series. Similarities abound:
-Mary Sue heroine with immense but uncontrollable power
-Foreign nation in which men’s main job is to protect their *precious* ladies
-Hero wants heroine to claim him as her soul mate
-Ominous evil magic users trying to kidnap heroine and use her for her power

And the list goes on. My best guess is that the author was unsure where to take this series and so she fell back into familiar territory.

But honestly, you won’t hear me complain about it. Tairen Soul is my all-time favorite romantasy series and perhaps one of my favorite series overall. If I can get more of the same then by all means, keep it coming!

Remember that hot ass Sea King in the first book??
Thats right he is back with his OWN GODDAMN BOOK and I was so FREAKING pumped for it ! I

descriptiondescription

Summer
Considered the weakest of the King’s daughters, known as the Seasons… but we learn it is only because she WANTS them to think that.
“She closed her eyes briefly, clamped unyielding chains around the caged monster in her soul, then opened her eyes again and pasted on a pleasant smile.”

description

She is a goddamn beast with monster power. And with great power comes great quirks: She was literally the clumsy lili shit in the kingdom She falls off a goddamn pier because she can’t handle the sex god Dily aka Sealord Merimydion
“Oh, I am so going to regret this,” she muttered.
And with that, Summer Coruscate put out her right foot and began walking down the flowered path that led to Dilys Merimydion.”

AND THEN A PLOT TWIST mhmmmmm mama’s favorite
“It was her. Summer Coruscate. The Season who had haunted his dreams since his arrival. The shy, fearful, reputedly powerless princess of Summerlea who somehow—by some impossible, incredible miracle of fate—had the legendary SPOILER.”

description

Dilys POV was surprisingly entertaining and looking back was the season why this book landed as a 3 star for me following its first being a solid 5. Because he is so fucking clueless
“And yet, the more Summer Coruscate smiled and charmed his men while blatantly denying him even the tiniest fraction of her regard, the tenser and more irritated he became.”

descriptiondescription

Dilly’s own special brand of himbo was so endurable because of how hard he tries to learn the new “above-land culture” and the complex person that is Summer. He fails. Miserably. There was one point I understood why they turned into pirates because their humanrelations director must SUCK ASS.

But to be fair, Summer doesn’t have her own shit figured out let alone this guy also trying to figure it out. Then he goes so far to say:
“I don’t know,” Dilys bit out, “and to be honest, I don’t really care. For now, we just need to..”

When the Dily asked why the main villain turned traitor like this HUGE plot discrepancy could be explained away by his boyish charm.. Yes that distracted me BUT I SAW IT DAMMNIT and seriously if he’s gonna be a goddamn king and he doesn’t even care? Da fuck Dilly?!

description

But worry not he had backup *fingers crossing for Ari to get his own book*
“For goddess’s sake, Ari, it’s a courtship, not a hunt.”
“Ah. That, my dear cousin, may be the real root of your problem. You think a courtship and a hunt are two separate things.” Ari grinned, showing gleaming white teeth with battle fangs fully extended. “They’re not.”

Dillys honestly made my heart ache because it just wasnt my kind of trope. Then I was disappointed with the plot lacking the direction because it was honestly stalled by our own characters! We had to wait for their own flaws before allowing the plot to move even a fucking inch, i mean we never went anywhere and this suppose to be the water book?

But props. Dilly was more articulate in his love than Winter.
“What is mine is yours without question or limits. So long as there is breath in my lungs, you will never stop breathing. So long as my heart beats, yours will never stop. Whatever pain you have, let me bear it for you. I offer my strength and magic and life force to nourish your own. Stay with me, moa kiri. Live for me.”

descriptiondescription

My huge complaint is after the author writes that heart wrenching proclamation after he finally wins her..... it literally says
“And it was done. She was his liana, his wife, and his mate.”

Well thats fucking underwhelming, well guess its done now glad we stretched a full 500 pages for that shit

Overall solid 3 star read that I definitely enjoyed. Wasn't as exciting and character developign as the first book with my favorite couple Winter and Storm, they number one in my heart but Dillys and Summer are a solid second.

Summary (from Goodreads):

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Winter King comes a breathtaking new tale of love and adventure set in the mystical land of Mystral...

He wasn't supposed to choose her...

When pirates kidnap Summer and her sisters, Dilys is in a desperate quest to save the woman he loves. Only by combining his command of the seas with the unleashed fury of Summer's formidable gifts can they defeat their brutal enemies and claim the most priceless victory of all: true love.

What I Liked:

It is no secret that over three years ago, I fell in love with The Winter King and have been eagerly awaiting The Sea King ever since. Dilys Merimydion was one of my favorite secondary characters of The Winter King, even if he only appeared at the climax of the book. He played a very important role in the survival of Wynter and Khamsin, and that is how he ended up in Konumarr, courting the Seasons (sisters of Khamsin). Even though I still loved The Winter King more, The Sea King was well worth the wait.

Princess Summer Coruscate has always been regarded as the timid Season of Summerlea, whose weathergifts are not so powerful. But the truth is, she has spent her entire lifetime suppressing her power, because it is too powerful. To protect everyone she loves, she makes sure that she always appears calm and serene... and significantly less powerful than her sisters. But this seems to change when Dilys Merimydion, notorious Sealord and Prince of Calberna, comes to Konumarr to court the seasons and hopefully take one back to Calberna as his bride. He is powerful, potently male, and enticing, and he doesn't seem to drawn to Autumn and Spring like he is to Summer. It is hard not to fall in love with him. Summer doesn't want to marry anyone, but she knows in her heart that Dilys is a good man. When disaster strikes and leaves everyone in an uproar, Dilys and Summer's growing bond will be tested as they fight for their lives, and for each other.

I knew I would love Dilys, given how much I adored him in The Winter King, but I don't think I was prepared for how much I would love him. He is wickedly charming and enticing, with alpha male qualities that are attractive and not overbearing. He is sweet and considerate, and like all Calbernans, he is solely interested in the happiness and satisfaction of his future mate. Calbernans treasure their women (Calberna is of a queendom, not a kingdom), and Dilys is no exception. He is a notorious captain, Sealord, hunter, victor, prince, leader, and he is appealing in so many ways. Dilys is confident yet humble, charming yet sweet, persistent yet considerate. He is easily a favorite romance hero of mine. He is imperfectly perfect, just the way I like it.

Summer is so different from Khamsin. She isn't outwardly temperamental and fierce. Rather, she likes to appear calm and timid and a little docile. She is gentle and sweet, but truly, the power that lies within her is untamed and wild. She is so afraid of losing control, so she tries to appear meek and unassuming. Summer doesn't embrace her power at first, and she definitely doesn't see her self-worth. But with Dilys chipping away at her defenses and treating her like a queen, she begins to accept her power, and accept him. Summer is so reluctant to get to know him, and then to marry him, but she has her reasons. It was wonderful to see her stand up and embrace who she was, and this was in no small part due to Dilys Merimydion.

The romance is very slow-burn. In The Winter King, the romance is elemental and powerful and full of chemistry. The romance between Dilys and Gabriella (Summer) is chemistry-filled and powerful too, but it takes some time before Dilys and Gabriella actually do anything (mostly because Gabriella tries to avoid Dilys at all costs - he awakens something in her that she is afraid of, but begins to accept and love). Dilys falls for Gabriella, and while Gabriella tries to deny her feelings, she falls for him too. It's such a slow-burn romance with a lot of suppressed lust (at least on Gabriella's part).

To me, The Winter King was steamier, but this book was very hot as well. There was probably less sexy times because of Gabriella's skittishness, but the scenes that were present were pretty hot. Their dynamic was on fire, with the clashes of intense power surrounding them. Both of them are extremely powerful and stubborn, so it makes for good chemistry.

Like the previous book, this one is a long one, for an adult romance novel. A lot happens in this book, besides Dilys trying to court the sisters, and then turning his efforts solely to Summer. I was so glad to see that the other two sisters were never interested in Dilys as more than a friend (though they definitely ogled him more than a friend might). I kept hoping that there would be no love triangle or cattiness between the sisters or anything like that. Spring and Autumn knew that Summer was avoiding Dilys purposefully, and they figured out pretty quickly that it wasn't because Summer didn't want him. I loved how supportive the sisters were of one another. I love that the whole courting-the-three-Seasons thing wasn't a big issue, and he stopped courting all three of them fairly early on.

At least half of the book is spent in Konumarr, with Dilys trying to woo Gabriella. The lady definitely doth protest too much - quite frankly, her numerous rejections of him made me sad. But it also made me smile because Dilys was so persistent and yet respectful of Gabriella's boundaries. That is how you woo a hesitant lady! Gabriella had her reasons, but Dilys wasn't giving up.

I love the world that Wilson has created. Full of magic, myths, legends, lore, bonds, fantastical creatures, attractive men, tough ladies... this book is a romance novel, but it is so much more. The fantasy world is so incredible and I feel like this book would appeal to readers that aren't romance readers, because of the rich world-building.

The climax of this book doesn't even really have to do with the romance! Of course, the romance is central, but the climax of the book deals with a threat to Calbernans and the princesses of Summerlea. My heart broke in a million pieces when the climax came, because of what Gabriella and her sisters had to endure. I was so surprised to see such in a romance novel, because it was heartbreaking (especially with Gabriella's account). But Wilson handled that heartbreaking, infuriating part of the story very well.

The book ends extremely well, in true happily ever after form. Dilys and Gabriella get a lovely ending that is more of a beginning than anything else. I love the decisions that Gabriella makes, involving Dilys. I know that sounds vague but I am so wonderfully happy with some of the political changes she made. The mark of a strong woman, in my opinion - she recognized her strength and the strength of her mate, and she put him on the same level (and not beneath her). You'll see what I mean. I have so much respect for Gabriella because she is quietly strong, intense in her gentleness, and a true queen that raises up her king. I loved this.

Also, fun fact - there are many Wynter/Khamsin appearances in this book! There are even scenes written exclusively from their POV (short ones at the ends of chapters, that sort of thing). They are the cutest! Khamsin is getting closer to her due date but that doesn't stop her and Wynter from being so adorable and throwing some serious heat. I love them!

I loved The Winter King and this book did not disappoint at all. I'm glad Wilson took her time with this book, because it was truly a masterpiece.

What I Did Not Like:

I definitely thought Gabriella did a little too much protesting when it came to Dilys and his courtship of her. I understood her reasons for not wanting to get close to anyone, but I felt like this line of thought and plot went on for too long.

I also wanted more sexy times! But this is related to what I just talked about, above.

Also, That Thing that broke my heart. It is well-written but so cruel/heartbreaking. (Well there are two things.)

Would I Recommend It:

Romance fans, don't miss this series. I have to especially recommend the first book (The Winter King), but the author definitely lived up to expectations with this book. It is very different and very good. Steamy and sweet slow-burn romance, amazing world-building, great storytelling - give The Sea King a shot. It takes a bit to get into the story, but it is a lovely story.

Rating:

4 stars. I put off reading this book because I was scared - it is my most anticipated adult romance read of 2017. But I had nothing to be afraid of. Wilson wrote a story as beautiful as the cover. I will be anxiously awaiting the publication of the next books! Especially since I want updates on Wynter and Khamsin's babies.

A buddy read with the wonderful folks at BB&B! Because we are always up for an adult fairytale!!!

Once again, for all of us adults that still want to read fairytales, Ms. C.L. Wilson delivers one seriously substantial one. This time the Sea Lords from Calberna come to court and claim the wives they have been promised as a part of the contract for their warriors to fight on the side of Winter and his wife, Storm. In order to bring more royal blood into his family and hopefully breed some of the Weather Magic into their royal line, the Calbernian Prince Dilys Merimydion has been given three months to woo Storm's three sisters, Summer, Autumn and Spring, and choose one of them as his wife. The royal council is hoping for Spring or Autumn, but as it usually happens, the sparks that are flying and starting conflagrations are with the one deemed undesirable, sweet and timid Summer. But she is not as weak as she seems. The mask she has been wearing in fear of unleashing the "monster" inside her and hurting someone, is something she has cultivated so she could not rouse all the emotions which make her blood boil and stay under the radar. No one, with the possible exception of her sisters, has any idea the loving and always smiling young woman who always avoids confrontation, is at all capable of loosing her temper, let alone unleashing magic which could be manipulative or deadly.

"...“I’m the forest fire, and you’re standing there with a glass of water saying you can put me out. But you can’t!”
He arched his brows. “Considering that I’ve spent the better part of the last fourteen hours proving that I can, in fact, light your fire and put it out over and over again, I’m vaguely insulted by that remark.” ..."

As I said, sparks are flying between the Prince and Summer, but she is afraid to love because she knows if she lets herself she would give her whole heart and if anything happens to her loved one, she would go mad like her father did after loosing her mother, and we remember how ugly that was from the first book... She has a reason to be scared, that is for certain... And he happens to be one gorgeous specimen of maleness and whatever else fishy "Aquaman" DNA he has mixed up in there. On top of that, ladies, his country has a severe shortage of women and they treat them as goddesses! Matriarchy all the way, with gorgeous males to adore and worship them at all times, with part of their right of passage being a class in how to best please the woman who will be your mate... Yep! Sign me up as a volunteer, shark teeth be damned!!!

"...“A sincere, satisfying grovel is a talent most men never really master. You could do a lot worse than wedding a man who knows how to apologize well.” ..."

AMEN!

So, if you are both into romance and Fantasy, or Fairytales but like them the X-Rated issue, with a lot of foreplay, that is, this author has found the golden formula and has once again delivered a very engaging read. I did not put it down until the end, despite all of us knowing that some Happily Ever After is the expected ending. There were some very difficult parts there, which upset me quite a bit, but I understand why they were there and that they were used as a pivotal point in the character development... Still, it was not all sugar and spice and everything nice, so be prepared... I know I am looking forward to the next book:):):)

"...“The strength of Calberna flows from our women. We protect them, we love them, but we do not cage them.” ..."

Now I wish you all Happy Reading and many wonderful books to come!!!

I was so thrilled when I was granted a copy of this book through Avon, I just wanted to jump right into it and I did and man I couldn't put it down, and this book is 600 PAGES!! Yes I read all that in one sitting and I just couldn't put this one down, not once. C.L. Wilson is just the type of author that pulls me instantly into a book and I can't get out of it until I am finished, and now I am feeling a bit of a book hangover because it was so dang good. I just want to re read it, just to be able to relive this most poignant and powerful romance. The Sea King is one of the most powerful and stimulating reads I have read in a long time. Probably ever since I first discovered this author with her first fantasy series.

Our story starts off with our hero, Dilys Merimydion, who is the prince of Calberna and he has spent much of his life to dedication and providing for his people. He is trained and is a leader and one of the most powerful of his kind. Now it is time for him to find the one, his future mate, wife, lover and future mother of his children, to start a family of his own. He along with other worthy Calberna males have been invited to Summerlea to court the women there, and Dilys will have the special honor of courting the three magical princess: Autumn, Spring and Summer. All reported to be lovely, but his people would prefer he go with Autumn or Spring. They admire strong women, and his mate will be the queen of Calberna, and the one princess they don't feel is right is Summer, who is rumored to be reserved but kind and caring and gentle. Our heroine Summer, knows that she must keep up the pretense that she is shy and gentle because she gained the power and abilties of both her parents. Powers that could endanger every life she knows and loves if it doesn't stay contained. Her own father went mad over the power and she is feeling herself going that way. She needs to stay safe and lone forever, she will never be able to have a man to love or to have children and it has created a emptiness inside her.  When Prince Dilys arrives to Summerlea, she planned on staying away, but she is drawn to him and there is a powerful soul connection. But Summer believes that she can never have love with a man, because it would only drive her to madness.
Dilys Merimydion wasn't just a terrible danger to her; he was a potently appealing poison she longed to consume. Every moment he sat there, crouched over her, edged her closer to the abyss. She wanted it--oh, not the destruction and misery her father had caused, but the love he'd had. The love Khamsin and Wynter had. That perfect, deep, consuming love. She wanted it so badly the hunger was a burning fire inside her soul.
So she does something that can't be forgotten, a way for Dilys to foget about her. But Dilys, is a man that was raised to court slowly and carefully. Summer may not have been his first choice, but he knows that there is a hidden fire within her, a fire that connects her soul to his. He knows that she won't be easy, and that her love will be hard fought for but well worth it. But there is a enemy, that is determined to take away his mate from him and her sisters, and he will have to use all powers of the sea to find her and defeat his enemies once and for all and claim Summer as his forever...

Yep this book was astounding, amazing, breathtaking, heartbreaking, endearing, poignant and I guarantee it will take your breath away. This is a book that holds no prisoners....its a story that will literally make this magical world come to life. I was completely swept away by the magic of this story, and the way that it unfolded was simply beyond perfection. I couldn't have asked for a better book in The Sea King. I don't think that there isn't anything I didn't love about this book. Let me talk about the characters a bit. Our heroine is full of dynamic qualities. She does have a sweet nature at times, children love and adore her. She teaches them, and she is loyal and everyone loves her.  But she is also powerful, strong willed and kicks ass when she lets that power free. She is also one of a kind. The first of sirens in hundreds of years. What I liked about her character was seeing that there are different sides to her personality that we see. She can be as calm or as storm as the seas. Then we have our delicious hero, Dilys. Now I will say this is a hero that I would want for my own. He does have some alpha male qualities but I would say he is a mix between Alpha and a Beta. Because he respects and admires women, he wants to see them safe and protected but also views them as his equals. He values their talents and abiltiies. We get to see deeper depths of his people, and boy I loved the way that they view women. They admire strong women above all, and encourage it even. They like them to be fighter and spirited. Once Dilys learns about who Summer really is and what she is, he only encourages her to be fully who she was born to be and to embrace her gifts. He wants to lift her up, and even though he is a protector, he wants a partner in life. And boy did I love that in this book. It was so refreshing to see a man that viewed women like this.
Life and magic and strength flows through your veins. You are a wellspring of power, a queen of all waters. All the life and energy and vitality in every ocean, every sea, ever river, every lake and stream lives in you. And if you need more, then take it from me. What is mine is yours without question or limits. So long as there is breath in my lungs, you will never stop breathing. So long as my heart beats, yours will never stop. Whatever pain you have, let me bear it for you. I offer my strength and magic and life force to nourish your own. Stay with me, moa kiri. Live for me.
Their romance is powerful and hot, I will see they have some powerful and intense chemistry. But their relationship is slow building at times. Even though they could make a volcano erupt with their desire, you see that Dilys wants more than just good sex with Summer. He wants to love Summer and for Summer to love him, and slowly courts her and he definitely knows how to do it so well. Summer is quite stubborn, but Dilys is beyond patient and understanding. Their romance is endearing and tender at times yet could be wild and intense at times too. There were many dynamics of their relationship that makes the reader want more from this couple.

The other characters in this story were simply fantastic as well, I loved the relationship that we see between the sisters. I loved their unity and closeness, how well they know each other and their teasing and bantering that brings a smile to your face. We do have some scary villains in this book, and I will need to warn you that their actions aren't for the faint of heart. And in some ways the author leaves us with a bit of a cliffhanger to the plot line here a bit. But not to the main couple....they find their happy ever after and bring some of the villains to justice.

Overall The Sea King is a love story that will make you ponder, that gives you hidden depths of emotion, that touches your soul, it breathes joy and laughter into your heart and gives a passionate and adventure that will burn into your memory....A MAGICAL JEWEL OF THE SEA

When I read the Winter King I spent a long time just loving the fact it was a romance with a high fantasy setting. It was the first Romantasy book I ever found so it is really special to me and I spent years waiting for the sequel to come out. I wish I could say it exceeded my expectations but it fell a little short of its predecessor still I have very high hopes for the overall series.

Dilys is really everything you can hope for in a suiter. He is smart, charming, fun, devoted and is practically a merman. He doesn’t have a tail or anything but he does carry some magic over the water and gills while he is in it. He needs a wife and goes to the Winter court to woo one of the seasons. Accept the only season his people told him not to pick is of course the one he finds irresistible from the beginning.

Summer has been hiding the strength of her gifts for years. She is stronger and more deadly than anyone realizes. Most of the world considers her the weakest Season and so kind and soft that she would never be a good match for the strong willed and warring Calbernans that have come courting and she wants to keep it that way. That is until she sees Dilys and something in her wakes up and demands she fight for the man that calls to all the power inside of her.
“What in Helos’s name had just happened? The Calbernan had turned unexpectedly and caught her gaze upon him and then…
She dragged in a breath, then another. Ragged. Shaken. She couldn’t even begin to describe what had happened. It was as if, with one look, he’d dived into the deepest, most secret parts of her soul, places no one – not even she – had ever been.”

Overall this is a solid story. It was more courting and trying to convince Summer that she is the girl for him once they figure some stuff out but it was interesting to see all the Calbernanas in Wintercraig to court widows and other single women from the war. They are quite charming and do woo well.
“If a woman was unattached and in possession of a pulse, she would not long remain unwilling in the face of a determined Calbernan’s courtship.”

This is the first book though in a look time that I had to put down and walk away from after a few chapters. There are about 4-5 chapters that deal with human trafficking in a very personal way. While it is well written it was also extremely disturbing to me and emotionally I needed some time away to recover. This hit on a few of my hot buttons and so I struggled a little.

I think like the Winter King this ended up being a little longer than it needed to be. At 608 pages it is on the hefty side for straight up romance. But there is also the rich fantasy world of magic and unknown forces at play. There might even be a god or two in the mix. I’m extremely interested in what direction the story will take in the Jaguar King and which Season will get to tame the beast. I’m thinking that will be in Autumn’s skill set but we will see. Hopefully there won’t be three years between books this time around.

I absolutely adored the majority of this book, the writing hands down was fantastic, very detailed and vivid. The authors imagination is literally out of this world. But It wasn’t as GREAT as The Winter King, truth be told Gabriella grated on my nerves a bit. However, Dilys was undoubtedly delicious!!

There are SPOILERS in this review but I'm not going to spoil the whole book.

So, I'll be honest, I didn't finish this book. I'm so disappointed because I LOVED the Winter King, the first book in this series. I loved Kham and Wynter and their story and how hard they had to fight to get their happy ending. The Winter King was such a great fantasy read and I have read it twice, and that's saying something because The Winter King is a long book.

I was super excited for The Sea King, I kept checking C.L. Wilson's website for updates and once it was available for pre-order, I bought it, no second thoughts, even though it was $6.99. I was so excited to read about Summer and the other Seasons and to read more about Dilys and the Calbernans. He was such a fun character in The Winter King and a hero!

The Sea King is the story of Gabriella, the Season Summer and Dilys the prince of Calberna. Dilys helped Kham defeat the Ice King in the Winter King and as a thank you for helping her save the world she invites him back to Wintercraig to court one of her three sisters, the Seasons of Summerlea. Dilys is from the Isles of Calberna and the men there LOVE their women, they treasure their wives, daughters and sisters. He tries hard to court Kham in the Winter King but Kham is already married and in love with her own King so Dilys accepts Kham's offer and returns to Wintercraig six months after the Ice King battle intent on wooing and marrying either the Season Spring or Autumn. What he doesn't expect is that the Season, Summer, is his destined mate and when the two of them meet, literal sparks fly between them. Summer is supposed to be the Season with the least amount of power and should be the last Season Dilys wants to marry, the Calberna council has already decided that he will marry either Spring or Autumn because their weather powers are supposed to be much more powerful than Summer's. Fate has other plans so this story follows Summer and Dilys' courting.

Sounds fun, but this book was just so heavy on the details and inter-monologues. I was bored about 20% into the book but I just couldn't bring myself to put it down. 60% of the books is basically Summer feeling sorry for herself and rejecting Dilys' courting. She has super powers that she couldn't control as a young child and so she has convinced herself that she can't love because her love can kill. Dilys spends the entire book trying to convince her otherwise. Dilys figures out pretty early on that Summer is a Siren, the first born Siren in 2500 years. This is a big deal for Dilys and his countrymen since the Sirens once protected their home before they were slaughtered. He pretty much stalks her and gets kind of creepy and she rejects him and this plays out for about 60% of the book on a loop. There is a lot of repetitive talk about how much Dilys and his people cherish women and how protected, safe and loved Summer will be with Dilys. There is a lot repetitive talk about how Summer can't love and won't love and this goes one for about 80% of the book on a loop.

I have many problems with Summer and the two other Seasons for that matter. They all have super powers they all can protect what they love but in The Winter King none of the three Seasons thought to protect Kham from their father. They knew their father was nuts and intent on murdering their youngest sister but none of them thought to protect her from him, instead allowing their father to marry her off as a warprize to Wynter. So that was a black mark against the three Seasons in my opinion. Summer is spoiled, haughty, and too much woe is me. I didn't like her from the beginning of this book, she had grown up with nothing but love and security and yet she played the victim. She spends almost the entire book feeling sorry for herself and it was just too much. She isn't the character that Kham was in The Winter King. She doesn't have the inner strength and determination that Kham had. Kham fought hard for what she wanted, she fought hard to prove herself to Wynter, she fought hard to save them all from the Ice King while pregnant! Summer just didn't have that kind of strength and her character fell flat. Instead she was just another spoiled princess waiting to have everything handed to her. As for Dilys, he was no Wynter and I didn't find him as interesting a character as Wynter. He too had a pretty good life and there wasn't much too him, not a whole lot of depth. Both Summer and Dilys were pretty much one dimensional characters.

There is a cliffhanger at the end and I'm not sure if that is supposed to lead into the stories of Spring and Autumn but if it does, those two stories (or maybe just one book with both them) will probably be pretty dark considering what happened to Spring and Autumn.

I know I did a lot of comparing of The Sea King to The Winter King but The Winter King was just that good of book in my opinion and I had so much hope for The Sea King. I so badly wanted to love this series and not just one of the books. I love fantasy novels, I love the world building and the imagination and storytelling that goes into building a fantasy world. I'm not sure what happened with The Sea King. The Winter King was such a well written book. Lots of political intrigue, a good supporting cast and a good villain. Though there was some sections long on the details, the book flowed well. The scenes between Kham and Wynter were well written and the sex was written in the right spots and didn't cause distraction or seem out of place. That wasn't true for The Sea King especially the sex scenes. I was also super disappointed in all the editing errors.

I needed to read it lickety-split…

After reading The Winter King and meeting Dilys Merimydion, I was REALLY looking forward to reading The Sea King. While I really enjoyed this story, it drove me a little bonkers too.

My back, my back, I can’t feel my back!! Slight exaggeration but I don’t think I’m cut out for reading long stories. I thought I was being smart waiting until I was on holidays to start this one, but I’m not sure anymore. I’m not the kind of reader that willingly spreads the joy of reading a book over days. Well, this book, it’s bloody long. I tried sitting up in bed, lying down in bed, lying on my belly in bed, lying on my side in bed, sitting on the side of the bed and even tried a chair. Maybe, if I had been at work and forced to take breaks, it wouldn’t have been so bad. Considering the length, it would have taken me weeks instead of days to read it, though.

I’m sure you’re all thinking, *Sassy, why didn’t you take breaks?*

I DID!! Well, I did, sort of. I stopped to say hello to my family a couple of times and I did eat and sleep as well.

But, I can’t leave them hanging for too long. You know, unless I read it, things don’t happen. Poor Dilys will still be waiting for Summer to get with the program and accept him as her mate. Hesitating would mean those 7ft tall, muscly, sexy and sweet men wouldn’t have found women to court and fall in love with. If I wasn’t dedicated to going on, more ships would have sunk, more slaves would have been captured and lives would have been lost. See, I need to read OR THEIR WORLD WON’T GO ON!!

Yep, I’m one heck of a dedicated reader. I’ve even got the broken back to prove it.

While I enjoyed The Sea King and the journey to everlasting love for Dilys and Summer, it was drawn out a little too much for my taste. Honestly, there wasn’t much wrong with the story, I’m just not a fan of waiting for stuff to happen. Watch my eyes roll as I wait for the heroine to stop being a nincompoop. See me cross my arms in impatience because I hate the delay of the hero realising that his enemy is closer than he thinks. There’s only so much “courting” I want to witness before I think they should just get to the good bits. If you hadn’t guessed it yet, I’m a wee bit impatient.

There's plenty of action, adventure, mystery and intrigue. I was sucked into the story from the very beginning, and while it takes a little longer than I'm used to, I couldn't help but be enthralled to the end. The characters are interesting with magic, skills and abilities that aren't always obvious until we see them in action. I loved finding out all the things that Dilys can control with his water abilities. Seeing Summer gain strength in her powers was as surprising to her as it was to the reader. I felt like she was learning with us, what she was destined to achieve. Then there was the Calbernaian's...

Seriously, if Calberna existed, I’d be putting in a suggestion to set up a Husband Camp, lead by their men. These guys, well, they’re pretty much perfect. HOT, sweet, loving and devoted, while also being fierce, strong, determined and HOT. I mean SERIOUSLY…their training to become men involves learning ALL ways to pleasure their mate and keep them happy. HOW COOL IS THAT??? Dilys is just one of the many men who were desperate to look for his mate and had to leave Calberna because the men outnumbered the women. WOW!!

I really did enjoy The Sea King. C.L. Wilson is remarkably talented and makes her characters come alive. I admit, a few times I was taken out of the story because of the spelling and grammar mistakes. This is a long story so I expect a few, but then again, it's a published book (Avon), so a little more care should have been taken to remove these errors, especially considering it was professionally edited.

The Sea King brought out all my emotions and at times I couldn’t help but sniffle, grumble, snort and squirm. The highs were high and the lows were low. There is one particular part of the book that is quite dark and I struggled with my feelings. Summer is subjected to pain, torture, humiliation and degradation. Some readers may struggle with it a little as well. I thought it was written well and I was able to move on from it.

I will definitely be back for more adventures with the Weathermages of Mystral but I think I need to come up with a better plan of attack…my back can’t take it. All suggestions on how to read long books comfortably would be greatly appreciated. I think I’ve got a bit of time before the next book in the series comes out, though…

I had The Sea King on pre-order over a month in advance. Before that, I waited almost a year for it to be released...only to face crushing disappointment.
First of all, C.L. Wilson has a tendency to drag out an issue so that it goes on for half the book instead of resolving it in a chapter or two. I got really tired of watching Summer vacillate between wanting Dilys and resisting him because of reasons that were no real obstacle to their relationship. I also felt that the courtship got a little creepy for a while there because Dilys wouldn't take no for an answer and kept pushing boundaries rather than trying to communicate with her. His actions closely resembled stalking (leaving gifts for her, following her around everywhere, stripping down in front of her window to swim every morning...).
The author included some heavyweight topics like suicide, rape, incest, and physical abuse, which I felt was a mistake. It didn't add anything to the story: in fact, it drained the light-hearted, romantic tone from the book entirely without portraying any realism to the characters mindsets and reactions to this abuse.
I didn't particularly like Summer as a character. She came across as being spoiled, cowardly, and selfish. She didn't use her power to prevent her father from abusing her little sister Storm/Khamsin. She didn't even intervene. Summer sees herself as a monster, to the point where she considers killing herself, but she doesn't seem to have a problem using her gift to influence people as long as it isn't for personal gain. She enjoys receiving affection from others but not attention. As previously mentioned, she alternately encourages and resists Dilys for an infuriatingly long time before finally giving in once he has played the part of the heroic rescuer. She is a one-dimensional character who doesn't behave or react in a way that conforms to human psychology.
I deeply resented the ending. It wasn't just a cliffhanger: it was like finding a pot of false gold at the end of a rainbow, after hours of slogging through mud, brambles, and ditches.
Not cool, C.L. Wilson. Not cool.

I have been a fan of C.L. Wilson ever since I read her Lord of the Fading Lands series (one of my favourite fantasy romance series of all time). Her books are released so few and far between that reading a new book by her is a rare treat indeed!

This story follows Summer, one of the three beautiful sisters of Princess Khamsin from the first book. The three sisters renowned for their beauty and power throughout Mystral are popularly called the three "seasons" of the kingdom of Summerlea.

The Calbernans who had aided Khamsin in battle were promised 3 months of courtship where any marriage worthy Calbernan male is free to court and wed willing women of Wintercraig and Summerlea.

The world building is EXCELLENT which is hardly a surprise for any of this author's books. As for the courting itself - described vividly for much of this book - let me just tell you....if a Calbernan male is out to woo a woman with his charms she will be swept off her feet. The Calbernans have a matriarchal society structure which is very interesting to read about. The women are revered and considered the beating heart of this society.

My only complaint is the length of this book. I wish it was edited more. Summer's continuous refusal of Dilys but him trying to woo her anyway was getting a bit repetitive.

And although I have said this before... I'll repeat again...the world building.. just wow!
This book can easily be read as a STANDALONE.

Is it terrible that I loved everything about this book, even Summer when she was being annoying at first, but I can't fully let myself be happy with it simply because I'm worried it'll be another 3 years between books? I loved the first one and this one was a roller-coaster of adventure from start to finish that I absolutely loved but I feel like I have to hold back from fully investing myself in this series simply because I have no idea how long till the next book is out, could be a few months could be a few years. I don't mean to be a jerk but its just how I feel, I even found myself making excuses not to read once I started just to drag the book out longer cause I knew once it was done I'd have no more fantasy fixes for awhile. The point I'm badly making is even though this series is wonderful and I would recommend it to people, I'd also recommend you wait to start it till its complete cause I definitely wish I had.

*March 1 2017*
I don't want to get too excited about it since I've been burned a few times but we have a new release date! Oct 31st, really hoping this is a firm date cause I've been looking forward to this book since I finished the first one.

*March 27 2016*
OH NOOOOES! I just saw that this books publication has been pushed back indefinitely. I'm so sad :(

*July 15, 2015*
Really sad and annoyed that it is actually July 2016 and not today that its suppose to be out. I've been checking Amazon all day wondering why it wasn't live. I am super bummed out, I was so excited about this one. And now its going to be 2 years between books :( Bummed the hell out.

*Nov 30, 2014*
Oh my god I love the cover!!! I want this book sooo bad, how am I ever going to wait till July for it?

After the beauty of the 1st book, I don’t know how the 2nd book has fallen like this.

Here are some of my thoughts:
• Initially, I was mainly annoyed at Gabriella’s constant pushing, but after more than half way in, I was blindsided by how much worse it got. I literally did not see this coming.

Blah blah blah I think despite being annoyed at Gabriella at first, I didn’t actually hate the story or the romance. I think I would've given it 3 stars maybe. But after what I mentioned above happened, I just found the story disheartening.

I don’t even know what to rate this .1 star (1.5? Idk)

ARC provided by Edelweiss and Publisher for an honest review.

I loved the first book in the series, but sadly this one was a disappointment.

Writing style was different/off for me and the narrative of other world/fantasy was confusing. Plus the heroine lost her appeal and became irritating bothersome towards the second half of the book.

Full review to come closer to publication date.

Gah that was so freaking good! I hope we don't have to wait another 3 years for the next book or I will go crazy! Wynter & Storm are still my favorite characters but I loved getting to know the Seasons better and I did love Summer and Dilys! And thank goodness for that second epilogue!!! I hope the next book is Springs!

What a complete 'shoto' show.

I wondered why this book had a lower rating for a C.L. Wilson book. Now I know.

To be honest, I tried to be understanding with the characters in this. But oh dear, the heroine was really annoying. That dinner scene where she acted horrible and childish against the hero who was trying his best, really cemented the fact that I was going to hate read this.

UPDATE:
The release date was moved to 2016, the reason being that she wanted to do the best she can with these books

YEESSS THERE IS AN OFFICIAL COVER AND BLURB YAAAAY! Cannot wait! I was intrigued by Merimydion and his culture the moment we met him... And what a great looking cover :D

________________

UPDATE (small teaser):
From C.L. Wilsons FB page

“I know what you’re afraid of,” Spring said when Summer remained silent, “and I won’t lie and say your fears are groundless. You have a right to be concerned. We all do. But we all also have the right to find some happiness in this life. I think Dilys Merimydion just might be yours.”
________________

Found a blurb on this awesome site ... Might or might not be an early version, but I can't seem to find any other blurbs, even on C.l Wilson's website. It's not even on GR yet! So thanks wickedscribe person! Hope youdon't mind me posting this here :)

"From the author of THE WINTER KING comes a breathtaking new tale of love and adventure, set in the mystical land of Mystral.

Summer Coruscate has grown up the daughter of royalty, a Princess of the Rose and a weathermage, but over the past three years of war, Summerlea has been rendered a shadow of its former self. Now, after the joining of her younger sister Khamsin and the Winter King in marriage, her kingdom is finally at peace.

A Calbernan warrior and seafarer, Dilys Merimydion has always possessed the ability to control the animals of the sea and uses their sight to chart his way through the dark, sometimes savage waters.

As she does it best, C.L. Wilson weaves a tale of war, love, and desire that will take you on a journey to lands many only dream of."

What I liked :

Dilys - Prince. Mercenary. Devoted son. Champion of little kids and baby animals.
Persistent, patient suitor.
As a prince, Dilys tries to keep political qualifications in mind as he courts the Seasons. But his intentions are ground to dust when he sees Summer.
Aftef some initial confusion and haziness, Dilys knows he wants Summer as his wife. He goes out of his way to make it happen. Thoughtful gifts, romantic notes are carefully selected to woo Summer. He tries to understand her mind and what makes her tick.

Matriarchal society
This was new to me and I liked their system. Women as the decision makers, the rulers and the men were warriors and providers.

Men of Calberna
Too good to be true. They are trained to be everything their future partner may need. Funny, good looking, skilled warriors with honour and magical gifts. Keeping their women happy and faithfulness are both important to them.

Khamsin and Wynter
These two exceeded expectations as a couple. Kham was a fine, clever Queen and Wyn was wonderful as an over protective brother in law.

The myths and magic involved
The Seasons have a complicated magical background and tragic past.
The Sealords have a different set of sea and water related abilities.
Wynter defies explanation.
The villains are experimenting with dark magic so anything can and does happen.

Gabriella
There were so many sides to Gabriella. Her gentle mask, being a loyal sister, her control and fears about her powers, suppressing her needs to ensure the safety of others. Gabriella was an engaging lead through most of the story.

The Seasons - Spring and Autumn
Oh, yes, Dilys Merimydion. The Scrumptious Sealord.”
“Oh, dear gods,” Spring groaned. “You’ve nicknamed him. Alliteratively.”
“I thought about Delicious Dilys. Or Manly Merimydion.

Spring is cool, controlling and rumoured to be the strongest Season. Autumn is the most beautiful, haughty, with a love for puns and practical jokes.

What I didn't like :

Honestly, Spring, why do you always have to look for the worst in people?”
“Because the worst is what most people try the hardest to hide, and I don’t like unpleasant surprises.

I wish someone had taken her wise words to heart. A little caution never hurt anyone. The key players were experienced in matters of court and politics but they were addicted to sharing information. They could not keep any secrets and didn't see the enemies around them.

Push and Pull. Hot and cold.
Summer does this so often that I worried Dilys would need a therapist to sort through his rejection issues.

Her fears were justified, noble even but it got tedious after a while. She was content to be miserable, shrink herself and let things continue as they were. Her refusal to even consider a solution was maddening.
She didn't even realize that by choosing to indulge her fears she was hurting Dilys over and over again.

Fair warning
There were some dark, uncomfortable parts which were resolved later and perhaps necessary if you consider the big picture.

Conclusion : While this was nearly as long as the Winter King, the plot underwhelmed me at times. Things got repetitive, the twists and surprises were missing...

The comparison to the Winter King is inevitable but this was a wonderful story with its own charm. Excellent writing, world building and dense magical history.
A slow patient romance and movie worthy action scenes

I loved the first book but this book made me so mad! The characters were difficult to like! He could be so 2-dimensional and over-the-top cheesy and she came off as a bit of a brat. There was so much effort into creating his people’s culture and it was very well-developed and impressive but at the end of the day they were basically mer-people and it was cheesy and overdone. Perhaps if they had worn actual clothing rather than loincloths I could have taken them more seriously. Sigh. Very frustrating book but overall my biggest grievance is with the sisters... what the author did to her sisters was just unforgivable. I don’t want to spoil but just know it’s extremely upsetting. Also the heroine gets over it wayyy too quickly. I know having a mate was supposed to help her calm down emotionally and take away her grief but it needn’t have been so much! I found it so hard to believe that she just went on living her new life so quickly after all the events without any traumatic repercussions- especially with what happened to her herself! She didn’t even go home to see Khamsin after! I was just astounded. The book was scattered and the romance was just her being stubborn and afraid. Ugh I can’t

I'll start by saying that I have read other books by C.L. Wilson and loved them. The first chapter of this book is somewhat confusing with all the names and keeping track of who's who, that many new readers may not want to read any further. It does get better after that. The author did a wonderful job fleshing out the hero Dilys, and you can picture him vividly as one hunk of a male. The Seasons are a lovely group of three sisters who many suitors hope to covet but have not succeeded. While I enjoyed Summer as the main heroine, she was not my favorite as far as heroines go. The secondary characters held more appeal for me. Overall, this was entertaining and I would read this author again.

It pains me to say this when this author is one of my favorite authors, but I only sort of liked this book. I thought the hero was a bit too worshipful of the heroine (even though apparently that's part of his culture). I thought the heroine was absurdly standoffish and self-denying, (even after we find out the reason why, it still bordered on obnoxious behavior). The only part of the book that really stood out for me was when something specifically bad happens to the heroine, but then she has almost zero problems getting over it, which was a let down because it was so unrealistic. Why bother having such a horrible thing in the book of there are almost no emotional repercussions to it? I'm hoping the next book is better.

4 "Let me cater to you..." Stars!

Well. For about the first 60% I was so completely in love with this book, I didn't think my heart would be able to take it. It was all Dylis's beautiful words and actions trying to woo Summer/Gabrielle into being his wife. It was so sweepingly romantic and down right swooney.

...Then, it took a big turn into a situation I completely did not expect and wasn't prepared for. CW- That effected my pleasure of reading the book, but what really dropped the star was Summer's continued refusal to be with Dylis. It just went on too long. And the tone of the book became somber for me.

I still did enjoy the story. It was romantic and adventurous. I hope the next book comes out eventually. Happy reading!
