Finding Matt

Rate this book
When six-year-old Matt Wilson and his Shih Tzu, Pixie, step out of the Stanton Community Hospital and disappear, his desperate parents convince Jaron Greenberg, a local pet psychic, to aid the police in the search. Jaron specializes in finding lost kitties and fixing problem pooches. He isn't prepared for a case with so much at stake. And as soon as he starts, the abilities he's had since childhood begin changing and growing in unexpected ways. Paulo Silva is a veteran detective new to the small town of Stanton. As the low man on the totem pole at Stanton PD, he isn't happy when the chief assigns him to babysit the pet psychic instead of actively working the missing child case. As Jaron uncovers clues, Paulo starts to wonder if he might be the real thing. Or maybe it's just his testosterone reacting to what he’s sure is mutual attraction.

This was NOT a romance, and it wasn't a very good mystery. The paranormal element (one of the MCs, Jaron, can communicate with animals and feel their emotions) kept evolving to the point that I was rolling my eyes (and I'm typically not put off by paranormal elements in fiction).

There was no chemistry between Jaron and Paolo, the cop who's investigating the missing child case that Jaron was hired to work on by the missing boy's parents. The boy, Matt, disappeared along with his beloved shih-tzu, Pixie.

We know from chapter 1 who took Matt and Pixie, and we pretty much know why. So the "mystery" is in tracking down the perp and finding Matt and Pixie.

There were WAY too many side elements that detracted from the story: Jaron's relationship with his best friend Stephen; Paolo's ex who doesn't believe in Jaron's psychic powers but eventually comes around; another investigator who's apparently out to get Jaron. None of it added to the story and felt like a distraction.

I tried to stay interested in the story, but by the 90 percent mark when the mystery was "solved" and the MCs had barley kissed, I was entirely disengaged.

There is a bit of M/M action at the very end, which is a tentative HFN, but honestly, at that point I wasn't connected to the MCs and skimmed right through it. (That's right: ME skimming the sex scene! Need I say more?)

There was a lot of random drama, but hardly any tension or steam. Many of the characters' actions felt scripted and unbelievable (an employee accusing Jaron of "witchcraft"; the random scene in the cafe with another customer calling Jaron a "sodomite"; Jaron's friend Stephen calling Paolo a "Chicano pig" the first time he meets him).

And worst of all:

Everything just felt OFF, rushed, and amateurish. I did like Jaron's dog Bear, but nothing about this story was satisfying.

Hm. This is hard, and I hate being one of those people bc they always annoy me when they say things like "there was more mystery than romance." I mean yeah it happens but so what if it's well written. And this WAS well written. I was so stoked for another book from the author bc I adored When One Door Opens. I loved Paulo and Jaron (tho that name stuck in my craw for some reason but names are names and I don't knock off my star for that).

My problem was that indeed there was almost NO romance. Usually the hinted relationship in the background of these stories is so romantic or heated that it's still a palpable part of the the story. Here you sensed the crush and I didn't mind the lack of sex ... But there really was no major development so far as them maybe being something til like 70%. And being left with an HFN ... It kinda pissed me off since we waited so long for the book to actually become an M/M and not just a psychic mystery. I mean we saw jaron w his best friend Stephen more than with Paulo and other than a lack of sex Stephen almost felt more like the other MC bc he did all the standard romantic MC things (sitting with him in the hospital twice, getting him a place, giving him a family). It just was anti-climactic when I was pulling for the MCs so much.

But I did like it. Def well written. Maybe there's a sequel? I think it'd be a disservice to the story not to hav one but still a great job on the characters and I loved the pet psychic angle.

Now this is the kind of MM book I love.

Totally focused on story all the sex comes at the end so I did not have to lose track of the story while the guys got it on lol. But I still got the beginning of a romance brewing watching these two.

Jaron was a wonderful character. Even though we only get a glimpse of his past he still called out to me.

Paulo was the kind of cop I love. No nonsense but willing to listen.

Stephen I would love to read more on he definitely needs his own true love story.

The mystery for me was very well done. I was hooked from the first page. The story kept up a nice pace and was interesting through out.

I would love to read more with this couple. A few more cases and this could easily become a favorite series.

ETA Still wish this was a series, I'd love to read how Jaron managed his gift, not to mention I loved these two as a couple lol

Yaelah buku apaan ini, gak ada bagus2nya sama sekali. Chemistry nya ga dapet sama sekali, mana banyak kata2 aneh dan insulting pulak.
Keliatan banget di tulis amatiran. Misteri nya gak oke, kebanyakan karakter ga jelas.
MC nya, gak lovable banget.

Ya udah. Bodo ah. Buang2 waktu nih buku.

Un expectedly, I found this book, and I loved it. Sure, it doesn't have a lot of romance, but it is a light and funny read. Sure, poor but sweet Jaron is serving a lot of clichés, but I fell so much in love with Bear! I want a Newfie like that!
And I certainly want a sequel. There is a lot of potential for Steven, Devin,... ,we need to know the story of the evil agent, and certainly see how Jaron's love life (and his professional live) will evolve. I want more!!!

Another Winner from JD Ruskin

I wanted to read Finding Matt for two reasons. Firstly, I really liked the author's first book, When One Door Opens, and secondly because I was intrigued by the idea of a psychic who has a connection to animals. I have to say that the book certainly delivered on its premise.

Jaron Greenberg, a shy young man who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in the small town of Stanton, is eking out an insignificant existence as a sort of 'pet whisperer' to people who pay him minimum wage to help them with their pet problems It's barely even a part-time job. Fortunately he has his friend Stephen to help him out. Stephen owns Pampered Pooches, a dog-grooming business that he runs out of his home. Stephen allows Jaron to sleep at the salon and use one of the rooms as his office space, and in return, Stephen is able to call upon Jaron to deal with difficult doggie 'clients.'

But then one day, everything changes. Jaron is contacted by Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, whose only son, Matt, has been kidnapped. We (the readers) know who took Matt, but no one else does, and no one knows where he is now, or if he is even dead or alive. With each day that passes, the trail goes colder and the hope that Matt will be found ebbs a little bit more. Jaron explains to the parents and the police that he can't get a reading on Matt-- only on Pixie, Matt's pet Shih Tsu who disappeared along with Matt. That's good enough for the Wilsons. They are desperate to get their son back, and they will try anything.

Detective Paulo Silva is new to Stanton. He left the Chicago PD following a horrific case involving another kidnapped child that he could not save. With this in his background, the case of Matt Wilson hits him hard. It's as though he has been offered a chance at redemption.

Therefore, he is frustrated when he gets assigned the joe-job of tagging along with the so-called 'psychic' the boy's parents insisted on hiring. Paulo doesn't believe in psychics and he is convinced Jaron is a fraud. However, the first time that Paulo and Jaron meet, there is an undeniable attraction that both men can feel.

As they work cooperatively to find Matt, Paulo begins to understand that Jaron's talent is not only real, but also that it is starting to expand and change in ways that take a physical toll on Jaron. As a result of his traumatic childhood, he had clamped down on his own budding abilities, shutting himself off from the pain of being able to read humans or having to deal with death. He assumed that getting minor readings on animals was all he could do. But strangely enough, it is Pixie who teaches him that his abilities are actually so much more, and because of her, he finally comes into his own.

I absolutely adored the character of Jaron. I was rooting for him all the way through the book. He started out marginalized in several ways; not able to earn a living wage, no family, not much of a future, and continually looked askance at by people in the town because of his shady (and thankfully long-gone) parents, his strange psychic abilities and his homosexuality. His transformation was a gradually unfolding thing, and I wasn't sure how far JR Ruskin would take it. But she did a great job and I was satisfied at the end that Jaron would be more than okay.

Paulo just oozed sex appeal. He desired Jaron even back when he didn't trust him, and wanted him even more when he began to understand that Jaron was not faking his much-maligned psychic abilities. What with the other demands of the plot (a race against time to find Matt) these two didn't get into bed together as soon as they wanted to, but I've always been one to appreciate a slow build in the romance department. I enjoyed the anticipation, along with their witty banter, something that JD Ruskin does extremely well.

One thing I appreciate about both of JD Ruskin's books is her quirky and interesting side characters. They add a lot of life and color to her stories. Stephen, especially, is going to have you laughing out loud!

In conclusion, I enjoyed this book very much, and look forward to more from JD Ruskin in the future.

I really liked this story, it's well written and it kept me on the edge of my seat right to the end. It has some very sweet moments but don't be looking for a romance if you pick this one up. The MCs crush on each other throughout but their crush takes a back seat to the drama that plays out. Paulo and Jaron don't get together until the end of the book and the story is an HFN as opposed to an HEA but I have to admit it's was a very satisfying HFN.

I loved the MCs Paulo and Jaron and I could see a very promising love story, there definitely was chemistry between these guys. I wish the author had written a sequel so they could get their HEA and I could get more of Jaron's psychic pet investigations. This story also had great secondary characters that I would love to see more of. I think Devin and Stephen would make a great pair.

(Some spoilers included at the end.)

Jaron is a pet psychic who works for his best friend at a dog salon. He barely scrapes by, lives in the back room of the salon and has the most amazing dog ever- Bear.

Paulo is the skeptical cop assigned to the case Jaron is called in on. Matt, a six year-old boy and his dog Pixie have gone missing and Jaron is asked to help find the dog and thus (hopefully) the boy. Paulo doesn’t want to believe in Jaron’s skills, even though he is immediately attracted to the man.

Over time Paulo is convinced of Jaron’s integrity and his abilities. They work together – sometimes illegally – to do everything they can to bring Matt back to his family.

While doing the investigation Jaron’s skills begin to change. His body begins to weaken and he even seizures as he sees more and more deeply into the mind’s eye of Pixie, the missing dog.

There is also some drama with Jaron’s best friend who is suddenly acting like a jealous boyfriend and kicking Jaron out of his home. Paulo’s ex gets involved as well, stirring the pot and causing trouble for Paulo on the police force. Not to mention there are psychic “haters” accusing Jaron of witchcraft and communing with the devil.

If all that weren’t enough, part way through the story tragedy hits and we begin to wonder if it’s at all possible for Matt to be found. (If you are worried about Matt being found or the fate of his dog – I put a spoiler in the end of the review – for some it might make the difference of whether or not you’d read this book.)

With the clock ticking and Jaron’s body failing him as well as new “powers” overwhelming him Paulo and Jaron and the ex take a road trip hoping to find Matt before it’s too late.

**
I was really prepared not to like this story. As an animal person, I was really worried when I read some of the early reviews and was prepared to be really upset.
But… I gotta tell you, I thought this book was a page turner.

The drama is right on the money. Though I hate books where we see things from the villain’s POV, I was able to follow the story easily even though I skipped those sections.

The romance is definitely not the star of the show. Sure, Jaron and Paulo end up with a very HFN that feels pretty solid, but most of this was about the mystery and the growth of Jaron’s psychic powers. It was fascinating. I loved how he was able to be in the mind of the pet and then later in the mind of people.

As a mother, reading a book about a missing child is bone chilling. There is nothing quite like worrying about your baby being taken – all of us can relate to that fear. So if you’re squeamish about that plot line – by all means skip this book. No doubt about it – it’s a hard one for some people.

However, the mystery was done really well and I appreciated that there was next to no physical damage done to Matt –the emotional scars from being abducted are bad enough.

Sometimes I thought there were a few too many “dramas” thrown in for story clarity. There was the best friend, the ex, the history with the old police force… I’m not sure these added to the story enough to be included, unless this is the beginning of a series and we need all that to help us understand future books. I really didn’t need to know the details of the case that sent Paulo packing to another job – really. I didn’t.

So – I have a hard time rating this. As a romance I’d give it a 3 of 5. There was some heat, some tension, and a pretty solid HFN. I liked Paulo and Jaron as a couple and hope we might see them again in a sequel.

As a mystery/thriller I’d give it a 4 of 5. I loved Jaron’s powers and thought the laying out of the mystery was well played even though we (as the audience) knew who the villain was the entire time. I had to subtract some points for the drama and for the villain POV.

So – as a compromise I’ll give it a 3.5 of 5 hearts and let you decide for yourself. If you want a hearts and flowers romance – this is definitely not for you. If you want a captivating mystery with romantic gay elements – I think you’ll find this book right up your alley. If you are a pet lover with a low tolerance for anything bad happening to a pet – you may want to read the spoilers or just plain skip this book.

**Spoilers**

(I won’t leave you hanging – you gotta know Matt gets found – I wouldn’t be able to read something like this if he wasn’t. Pixie however doesn’t make it.)

I loved this story. It was more intense and fascinating than I was expecting. A great mystery and a fantastic buildup of tension and intricacy.

Jaron is such a sweetheart. He can communicate with animals psychically. His whole process and interaction was very interesting. I respected his integrity and desire to prove himself. He pursued helping animals even though most of his reward was in the form of gratitude rather than money. He was used to the scorn of many in his small community first for his terrible parents and their mistakes and then  for his “evil” powers that were either a con or maybe connected to the devil.

When Jaron is asked by the missing boy’s parents to help find their young son, he tries to tell them that he can’t possibly intrude on the police investigation, but then the cops say yes, and Jaron is pulled into something that will change his life forever. When the cop who shows up is Paolo, Jaron is smitten and intrigued. Jaron knows what people say about him and he doesn’t expect that Paolo will believe him. When Jaron is able to connect with Matt’s dog, he knows he can’t say no to helping.

Paolo is a good man and cop. He fled to this small town needing the quiet and a slower pace to his job. When his past comes back to bedevil him in the form of his ex (boy)friend/lover and co-worker from the State Police, Devin, who is heading up the missing child case that has rocked the small town, so much comes rushing back. When he is tasked with being liaison to the “crazy psychic” he can’t help but feel like he is being punished. When he meets the sexy and sweet Jaron he can’t resist falling for a man who is quickly proving that the only thing fake about him are the rumors and innuendo that surround him.

The escalation and intensity of Jaron’s powers was cool. It felt like a natural progression and I could understand why he hadn’t ever explored them more. They were scary and dangerous and while it made for great reading, I didn’t envy what they were doing to his mind, body or life. I understood why Paolo would see the benefits to having Jaron use his gifts for law enforcement purposes. I respected Paolo more when he set aside the greed for access that those powers could give him when he saw what the gifts cost Jaron, and Jaron’s health and safety superseded any thoughts of using the man he had come to admire,

The romance was well paced. The men meet in an intense and strange situation. Them having a relationship is not kosher while the investigation is ongoing. Especially with the way that some people react to Jaron’s knowledge with scorn and suspicion. Watching the attraction smoulder beneath the surface of their interactions, seeing their emotions become deeper with every moment spent together. Trust and affection replacing doubts and fear as they work together to bring a little boy back home to his family. A fantastic combination of instant lust and interest with a slow burning romance.

I love Jaron’s Newfoundland, Bear. He was best friend, caretaker, body guard, and unconditional acceptance wrapped up in one large furry bundle. He cracked me up and he was such a good dog. I loved the pages that he was on.

There were moments where I couldn’t decide whether to throat punch Jaron’s best friend, Stephen or hug him. The relationship between the lifelong best friends was complicated and dysfunctional and forever. I loved the way that Jaron was a part of Stephen’s big, overwhelming and affectionate family. Jaron needs that love and acceptance and the barrier all of the large and gruff brothers give him.

Devin was a pain in the ass and confounding. I hated him and was afraid of what he would do and I didn’t trust him for a minute. But then like all people do he began to show that there were reasons that he and Paolo had been such good friends. He was an ass, but in the end he became real and flawed and was a dork, he made me laugh. I couldn’t hate him anymore.

An excellent book that pulled me in and had me following every twist and turn and falling in love. This is a writer whose work I will always pick up and devour. I know I will get more than I hoped for and put the book down wanting to read it all over again.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

This is first and foremost a mystery that just happens to have a M/M romance element to it and, as far as a mystery goes, I liked that we are privy to the identity of the antagonist and have to sit back and watch the characters struggle to solve the crime and bring Matt home. The one thing I did notice though is that the remaining characters were quite shallow and two-dimensional, even Jaron’s BFF Stephen, and Matt’s parents, who really would have benefited from a bit more depth.

The first chapter was a challenge, I won’t lie, simply because of the subject matter. Once I got past that, I was drawn into the story and did not put the book down often, or for very long, wanting to see what happened. If you are a fan of a mystery where the focus is on the plot and not on the sex, this would be a good choice and to others, don’t let the subject matter scare you off. Ruskin addressed the abduction respectfully.

Cutiest story with pets I've ever read. I don't usually like reading stories with pets since I can't really understand the infatuation with them. Jaron's dog Bear was an awesome protective dog. I loved seeing their interaction at the start and throughout the book. The protectiveness Bear showed towards Jaron was adorable. It was cool to read about and pretty sweet.

I loved that the author try to make this a humorous read. I was laughing when Silva tried to bribe Bear with a hotdog. Also at the idea of Jaron unable to communicate with roaches had me laughing.

The author did a wonderful job with building the the intrigue for Matt's case. I enjoyed reading it all unfold from Matt's kidnapping and seeing Marnie's mental state while she held Matt hostage. It was thrilling to see what type of abilities Jaron would exhibit. The nonchalant way Jaron took in people's acceptance (skepticism or denial) of his gift made him a character that just stood out to me. I admired that trait in him. His honesty in the way he ran his business also made me appreciate his character more.

If this book had not have been marketed at a romance novel, I might have rated it higher. As it stands, it's more mystery than romance, which left me very disappointed. There isn't much chemistry between the MCs, and I think Jaron's relationship with Stephen had much more chemistry. The mystery aspect is already revealed to us in the beginning so that doesn't engage us much. Kind of disappointed in this read since I enjoyed Ruskin's other novel, but still not a terrible read. I wouldn't recommend it, but I think some would be able to enjoy this story.

It's difficult to classify this book because the romance is very much secondary (they don't get intimate until the end) and it's not really a mystery because from the start, we know who had Matt and why, but this story really drew me in. I enjoyed the characters and their stories, and hope that Ruskin writes more adventures with this couple.

Loved the animal psychic aspect, but the changes in Jaron's abilities was too convenient. I also didn't feel the attraction between Jaron and Paolo, and the addition of Devin and his background with Paolo made even less sense.
Even though Marnie's actions weren't acceptable, the author made it possible to see where she was coming from, to understand even if not to sympathize with her.

When a child and his dog go missing, the Wilsons’ decide to bring in local pet psychic Jaron Greenberg to help find him when the police don’t seem to make much progress. As the new guy with Stanton PD, Paulo Silva is tasked with babysitting Jaron and to say he’s skeptical of Jaron’s ‘abilities’ isn’t too far from the truth. It doesn’t take long before Paulo realizes Jaron has a true gift and as Jaron and Paulo get closer and closer to finding Matt, Jaron’s abilities become more intense putting him in more than one dangerous situation. The more time they spend together, the more their attraction grows but will they be able to find Matt before it’s too late?

Okay, so that description doesn’t do the book justice at all. In fact, this book was so amazing that it kept me up until four in the morning! Once I started, I was drawn into the story, wondering what would happen next or how Jaron’s abilities would develop. I loved that there was a good mix between the mystery and Jaron/Paulo getting to know each other. Granted, most of their ‘moments’ were while they were working the case but still, they were MOMENTS!

As for the characters, I loved both Paulo and Jaron. Paulo moved to Stanton to settle down a bit after the way a previous case affected him. He’s skeptical of Jaron at first but it doesn’t take long before Jaron’s charms and innocence make him realize there’s no way Jaron would be a scam artist. I loved Jaron as a character. He’s such a sweet man, who loves animals and I loved that he was a pet psychic. It gave a bit of a twist to the story and made things interesting especially when he was able to ‘talk’ to Bear, his gigantic dog.

I absolutely ADORED this book but I admit, I would have liked to see more of Paulo and Jaron’s relationship after everything was over, to see them when they weren’t limited by the whole Jaron being a witness situation.

In the end, this was a fabulous story that kept me up all night because I just HAD to know what happened next. This is my second book by Ms. Ruskin and I must say, so far I’m loving her writing AND her stories and this is another book I’ll be adding to my ‘favorites’ shelf. If you’d enjoy a story with an engrossing tale and great characters, definitely give this one a go!

5 Heart Review by Kimberely

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this book. A cop falls for the psychic while working a case together. That’s a plot that has been done many times before yet Ruskin found a way to make it fresh and new.

This book was suspenseful with great characters and a believable plot line. This was more of a mystery than a romance but that was more than okay. There was a wonderful balance of mystery, suspense, with a touch of the paranormal thrown in for good measure. I liked how the author told the story from more than one MC’s POV, starting with the abductor first. By doing this, you truly saw the depth of Marnie’s mental illness so it was hard to see her as an evil person. The author also did a wonderful job of revealing the backgrounds of the MCs of the story which formed these perfectly three dimensional characters. I don’t know who I loved the most: the human or the four legged characters. I adored Bear and was so heartbroken for poor Pixie. Of course, the cats, not to be outdone, were impressive as well.

The heat rating on this is not very high but again, this works well for this book. This allowed Jaron and Paulo to get to know each other and kept their focus on finding Matt. Solving the mystery of the who, how and why behind Matt’s kidnapping took a front seat, I think to any developing relationship between Paulo and Jaron. I think that if the author had allowed these men to engage in a sexual relationship while that child was still missing would have been distracting and, in a way, inappropriate considering all of their time and headspace needed to be on finding Matt. The heat came later when everyone and everything was wrapped up, which the author did quite well. The ending was perfect.

This is a new to me author and I must say that I will definitely make it a point to seek out more of their work. If you’re looking for an engrossing read with touches of romance mixed in with paranormal elements, you should give this book a try. You won’t be disappointed.

While I wouldn't recommend this book to readers who want a lot of romance between the MCs, I didn't miss it in this plot - in fact, I would have questioned romps between the sheets while the chance of finding the little boy diminished with every day he was missing. Finding Matt (as the title says) had priority and held my interest until the end. I didn't mind learning early on WHO took him - it didn't take away the suspense of the actual search.
As a big animal lover I enjoyed reading about Jaron's interaction with dogs (and cats), and BEAR...yes, BEAR became my new fictional best four-legged friend, woof! What happened at about 50% in had me very upset and almost made me take off 1 star; however, when I noticed it actually , it overrode my wish for a different outcome.
As for Paolo and Jaron - can I see them as a couple? Yes, absolutely! I would've loved to 'meet' Paolo's Mom and would've LOVED AN EPILOGUE starting several months after Matt's case, focusing on them as lovers. There's lots of potential.
The side characters fit well into the plot (although I did not warm up to Devin, he came across as rather arrogant), and the paranormal aspect was well done . There were a few funny moments as well, so overall I can give it 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 despite my wish for an epilogue about Paolo & Jared's relationship and professions (and Jared believing more in the value of his work AND in himself).

Re-read Mar/19: rating 4 stars.

I enjoyed the characters just as much this time around. I felt as though the relationship played out realistically, and I liked that no one was unprofessional, and actually made a point of not being unprofessional.

Jaron is a psychic, but he can only communicate with animals. He's had the abilities since he was a child. He has his pet psychic business in his best friend's pet grooming business, and one day a couple comes in to try and do everything to find their missing son. Since he was taken with the family dog, Jaron agrees to see if he can sense everything.
Paulo is a policeman and he is working on the task force to try and find the missing boy. The task force is actually headed by his ex, and when Paulo is sent to see the pet psychic to keep him out of the way of the investigation. Paulo doesn't believe in psychics, but Jaron starts to make a believer out of him.
THey work together to try and find the missing boy.

Jaron and Paulo are strong characters, who each have their own issues to deal with. There aren't a lot of secondary characters, although Jaron's relationship with his best friend is sweet...and hurtful. Most of the focus of the story is on finding the missing boy, which doesn't leave a lot of time for developing the relationship. I feel that they have lots of time in the future to get to know one another and have their romance develop naturally.

Four stars!
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the fact that Jaron and Paulo waited through most of the book to be together. They both realized that during an investigation wasn’t the time for romance. However once they did get together, they burned up the pages on my Kindle. There were a bunch of lines that made me laugh and it was great to bring a bit of light heartedness to the story. When Paulo and Jaron first met, I felt bad that Paulo kept trying to prove that Jaron wasn’t a fraud. I understood why it was hard for him to believe. But it was clearly hurting Jaron that he kept thinking he was either a freak or a fraud. I thought it was cute to see inside the heads of some of the pets. Whether it was just snatches of feelings or pictures, it was interesting to see how they thought. Jaron’s problems with his conscience at the end with his expanded abilities was great. I liked that he didn’t want to use his powers for evil.

So, I'm not sure what to classiffy this story. It's not a mystery because we know the Who, When, How and and Why of the villain from chapter one and we know Who, Why and How the hero will solve the mystery created by the villian from chapter two. It's not a romance because the relationship circumstances and dynamics of the two solving the case doesn't allow for romance until after the villian is caught and the case closed towards the end. It's not erotic because we get one kiss at 65% in and one sex scene at 98% in, so there's not much. There is A LOT of drama and interesting subplots, some with a tenuous link to the actual story, but no real emotional connexion between the MCs or to the story. In fact, as much as you want the heroes to close the case, you actually feel bad for the villain given her situation. Overall, it's an average read that I won't reread again and that's how I determine a book to recommend. If I'll reread a story until I have my favourite parts memorised, then I'd recommend it. Sadly, this is not one of those books.

3.5* but as I enjoyed it, gets the bump.
A missing child mystery where pet psychic Jaron is called in to help by tracking the family dog who is with the missing child.
It is quite a skill to keep a book going when you know the protagonist about half way through.
I enjoyed the whys and whyfors of the kidnapping. I also liked the slow attraction between Paulo and Jaron.
Having said this, I do think the book didn't really grab me with the intensity which it could have. I didn't feel the intensity of affection between Jaron and Stephen or the intensity of attraction between Jaron and Paulo or indeed the animosity between Fisher and most everyone!
I didn't mind the slower build to the romance, it was definitely secondry to the mystery but more realistic I think.

Enjoyable

Ok I'm going to start by saying this is not a romance but a mystery, I'm ok with that.
It starts with the first chapter in the mind of the abductor and I liked this, I think it was needed, it really showed just how mentally unstable Marnie was. If this wasn't included it would have been easy to just make her out to be the cold blooded kidnapper. It doesn't excuse what she did, but made her a 3 dimensional character not a cut out copy of a character.
I love animals and the idea of being able to understand what is in their brains is a great one, and I really liked that the author used an animal psychic, as this is a different take on the psychic usually used.

Reviewed by Brandilyn for Prism Book Alliance. When you start a mystery telling the reader exactly who the baddie is, you have to make the journey to capture said baddie worthwhile. Unfortunately, I am not sure that JD Ruskin quite made the grade with Finding Matt. There are parts of the story that were intriguing, and parts that left me wondering why they were included at all. Hope there is more books!

A good book for me has character development, humour and great MC with a few quirky side characters. This had everything. Slow steady development and a lovely ending. Unfortunately can see many more books involving both MC and of course Bear! Well done last vex it

I've read this book twice because I love a good mystery. No, it's not your "traditional" romance novel but it's still a very good read. It's a mixture of whodunit, "paranormal" of the psychic kind, and mix in some relationships for a great story. Don't hesitate; just read it! You won't be disappointed. 5 stars

Blurb's accurate, book's better.
I think I could happily read tissue labels written by this author! Wonderful style, great story and character development, no sex overload, tenderness and angst thrown in the mix - gotta love it.

Definitely will be reading it again.
