“You think if you move fast enough, love carelessly enough, no one will notice that you’re the one who feels every single thing too deeply.” Ashley to Cole
Ashley Carter has it all: her dream job, a devoted husband and a baby on the way. Unfortunately, when something seems too good to be true–it usually is. Her husband has been keeping secrets and Ashley, as it turns out, doesn’t know Cole Westwood at all.
A wish spoken in a moment of anger sends her back to her college years, erasing the life she’d cherished. Back in Yale’s Physics department she encounters a reckless, sharp-edged version of Cole–and his twin, Dale, whose death shaped her to-be husband into the man she thought she loved.
While they may be brothers, the pair couldn’t be less alike: Cole is as volatile as he is charismatic while Dale is a gentle, kind and thoughtful–everything Ashley loved about her husband. With the former pushing her away and the latter falling for her, she finds herself at a crossroads–give her heart to the man bearing her husband’s name, or the one who embodies everything she admired about him.
Are the growing cracks in Cole’s facade enough to allow her a glance at who he truly is? Can she separate Dale from the man she once married? And, most importantly–can she get out of this mess without breaking both brothers’ hearts?
I write stories about love, magic, and the quiet strength that lives in all of us. Whether it’s fantasy or romance, I’m drawn to characters with deep hearts and complicated choices.
When I’m not writing, I’m reading something beautiful or dreaming up my next world.
I was really excited for this book because the blurb absolutely sold me. The concept of an alternate reality and time traveling, saving a life, and learning about a partner’s past was beyond intriguing, but the book fell flat for me. It was still a good read, but I felt the author could’ve pushed boundaries on this one or had a better plot twist.
I don’t normally write reviews with spoilers, but I feel the need to expand on my thoughts for this one because truly I think it had amazing potential. Before I get into the spoilers (you have been warned), here’s one big thing that bothered me:
1) Repetitive phrases and descriptive words: when the author describes Cole’s eyes/the way he looks at Ashley, the way people smell (cologne), the way he said her name, “made her head spin” SPOILERS 2) This is my own personal opinion, but Marie shouldn’t have gotten with Cole KNOWING Ashley had a thing for him. Like girl, DISRESPECTFULLY get lost :) Idk how they both were so mature about it because that would absolutely SEND me 3) I was hoping for some plot twist involving change identities or something?? When the blurb and book mentions revealing Cole’s secret and trying to find out what it is…like…….what….was…..it…..??? I still don’t get it. Was it the fact that he started acting like Dale after he passed? Because what kind of secret is that. That’s not a secret?? I’m so confused 4) I didn’t feel a big connection to any of the characters if I’m being honest, and I don’t think we got to see any of them truly grow. The character development was lacking from the reader’s perspective. 5) I’m very annoyed with the ending. Why do we not get to know what happens with Dale? Was that not one of the two biggest things Ashley was trying to figure out/fix? Why did we get robbed of knowing what happens? 6) Justice for Dale because that man went through too much to get nothing out of all of this. Why is everyone torturing him and he’s too nice to let it all go. I would burn down the physics building.
This book was far from bad and great; it landed very squarely on okay for me. It was a very interesting concept, but the plot played out poorly.
Thank you so much to N.L. Silver for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!

Echoes of Us by N. L. Silver is a beautiful, complicated love story with a time travel twist. Ashley Carter travels back in time to when her husband Cole was a student at Yale, and let's just say the Cole she knew is very different from this Cole. The novel is about learning to accept and love all versions of a person. Ashley must learn to love this different, harder version of Cole, and it isn't easy, but it's only when she does, that she realizes how deep her love for him truly is.
I loved the character development and academia setting. The novel made me remember my college days and reflect on if I'd met my husband when we were in college. Would our story have ended up the same? It's an intriguing concept, and the time travel element works so well throughout the story.
I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a captivating romance in an idyllic college setting, with beautifully complicated characters. I cannot wait to see what N. L. Silver writes next!
I found myself drawn to the characters and wanting to see how things would play out for Ashley and the brothers. Who will she choose safe choice Dale who is sweet, caring and loyal or Cole who is kind of a hot head and likes to play games but seems to be only because he is having a hard time keeping his walls up when it comes to Ashley he has armor up with those around him that show him as a careless playboy but Ashley sees him for who he is warts and all (don't worry, he doesn't have warts of course he is a flawless, handsome hard body) but she still is drawn to him even with seeing his flaws and that means a lot to someone who has always felt like he wasn't good enough compared to his brother.
There are still some left over questions that leave room for a sequel and I would love to arc read for the next book in the series.
The premise of this book just hooked me up from the first moment I read it. Throw in 2 smart main characters, intrigue, time travel (!!!), college setting and I am in. I read this book in one-sitting and couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next book!
“You think if you move fast enough, love carelessly enough, no one will notice that you’re the one who feels every single thing too deeply.” Ashley to Cole
Ashley Carter is living the dream: she has her dream job, a husband who is devoted to her, and the baby she's always wanted on the way. But, sometimes when things seem to be too good to be true, usually that's the truth. Ashley knows that her husband has been keeping secrets from her, and she quickly realizes that she doesn't really know Cole Westwood as well as she thought, or really at all.
In a moment of anger, Ashley makes a wish that she could go back to her college years, in essence erasing the life that she has been living and cherishing. Soon she finds herself back in Yale's Physics department and it's there that she finds a reckless, sharp-edged version of Cole (a Cole she doesn't know at all) – but more than that she finds his twin, Dale, whose death would sharpen Cole into the man she thought she loved.
As Ashley gets to know the younger version of Cole, and finally gets the chance to get to know Dale, she realizes that the twins, while they may look exactly alike, they couldn't be more different. While Cole may be volatile he's also very charismatic. Dale on the other hand is gentle, kind, and thoughtful, the very qualities that Ashley had loved in her husband.
Cole is constantly pushing Ashley away no matter how hard she tries to get close to him, to get to know him, to push herself into his life. Dale on the other hand pulls Ashley close and without meaning to, Ashley finds that Dale is falling for her and she quickly finds herself at a crossroads. Does she stay on her course and give her heart to the man who bears her future husband's name? Or, Does she change her path and course and give herself and her heart over to the man who actually has all the qualities Ashley admires about him?
Slowly cracks start to appear in Cole's pasted-on facade and this gives Ashley the opportunity to see who he truly is. Now she just has to try and separate Dale from the Cole that she married. Now she just has one question.
Can Ashley get out of the mess she's created without hurting and breaking both Cole and Dale's hearts?
Echos of Us by N.L. Silver was such an amazing book. It was one of those books that left you with existential questions and leaves you wondering what would happen if you could go back and change things. But, you have to remember the butterfly effect and wonder what else would change if you were able to change one choice that you'd made in your past.
Ashley believes that she's living the dream, she has her dream job, and she's working with people who are struggling with their own grief. She has her dream husband who is in her eyes he is the most handsome man in the world, on top of that he's caring and brilliant. And if that's not enough of a dream life, on top of all that, Ashley is expecting their first baby, and even though she is still early on in her pregnancy, she is so in love with this baby.
Despite all the great things that Ashley has going for her, she still feels like there's something wrong in her marriage. She feels like her dear husband is hiding something from her at times when Ashley would ask him questions and he seems so distant from her at other times. And Ashley can't understand why when she can help so many people who come to her for help and yet there's nothing that she can do to help her husband who seems to need her so much.
Cole Westwood feels like grief has enveloped his life and now it just hovers over him and his entire family and is now a blanket that's wrapped itself around them all and refuses to let any of them go. Their grief all stemmed from the loss of Cole's twin brother Dale, who had been killed in a car accident.
Cole just can't figure out how to understand his grief and deal with it. Cole had always felt like he'd been the lesser of the two twins, especially in the eyes of their parents (his mother was the worst), in so many ways Cole had looked up to Dale and often Cole would go to Dale for advice and guidance on the most important decisions he faced in his life. But, now Dale was gone, and Cole had no one he could go to for any advice or decisions when he needed it the most.
One night an old college friend of Cole's comes over for supper and tells Ashley that she really doesn't know the real Cole at all. After hearing that comment Ashley decides that it might be best if she takes a bit of time away from Cole, to get some clarity and figure things out. So Ashley goes back to her parent's place and stays in her childhood bedroom and she finds herself making a wish that she had known Cole before Dale died and grief took over him and she could understand him better.
The next morning Ashley wakes up stunned to find that she's back in the past, it's right after a devastating breakup with some guy that she no longer cares about. She suddenly realizes that she has different memories than what are happening in this current timeline and she can't do anything to let those memories out. And Ashley's not sure how she's going to stop from letting those memories out. Ashley feels blessed that she still has her best friend Sarah with her when she wakes up. Sarah tells her that they have to get back to school. This is when Ashley realizes that things have changed. She's not attending Harvard like she had in her original timeline. Now she's attending Yale because of a bet she'd lost with Sarah. It's while Ashley is there that she runs into Cole and Ashley is shocked to meet Dale as well.
Ashley struggles as she interacts with both Cole and Dale with the memories she has of her future, or at least the future she had in her original timeline. She keeps fighting for her relationship with Cole feeling the loss of the baby she may never have in this new timeline, even though a baby isn't even a flicker of a thought yet.
Cole in this timeline is a notorious campus playboy who not only loves to make his rounds at the parties hooking up with any and all the girls he can, which when Ashley sees this it just rips her heart out and shatters it to pieces, but he has a habit of sharing some of those women with his best friend.
Dale is completely the opposite of Cole. He's thoughtful, kind, considerate, intelligent and honestly, he's this truly amazing well-rounded guy, and these were all things that Ashley thought that she loved about her husband.
Cole likes to play at charming but at the same time he pretends that he doesn't care about anything or anyone and he's manipulative and doesn't care who gets hurt by his manipulations. And he loves to play games with Ashley, one minute he'll be pulling her close and making her feel good and close to him and the next second he'll be pushing her away and making her feel like crap.
Ashley starts to learn into her academics and realizes that she wants to join the Yale physics summer program that's being led by Dale. The more time she spends with Dale though, the more she realizes that Dale has all the qualities that she's been missing and longing for from the life she had before with Cole.
The more time Ashley spends with both Dale and Cole she finds that she is not only being drawn to both men but she finds that she's developing feelings for both men, it may be for different reasons and different traits but the emotions are there. Quickly Ashley finds that she doesn't know how to handle the emotions she's feeling for both men and she's feeling like she's going down the same road as her father. She feelings like everything she's been trying to do has been going so very wrong, it's just turning out to be a mess, and Dale's car accident is still looming in the future, Ashley just wants to try and prevent it. If she can?
N.L. Silver has created characters that resonate with you and stay with you long after you read the last word. Even after finishing the book you are left wondering what happened in this new timeline that Ashley found herself in. Did Ashley and Cole get married once again? Was Ashley able to stop the tragic car accident that stole Dale's life away?
In some way's I wanted Ashley to change her future and choose Dale over Cole in this new timeline. Dale is so sweet, caring, and loyal. Whereas Cole is a hot-headed, headstrong guy who likes to play head games and who likes to keep his armor in place. But, Ashley does see Cole for who he is due to the timeline that she comes from and that keeps drawing her back to him even though Dale would have been the much better fit for her. And you can see that Dale has real feelings for Ashley and they have real chemistry between them that sparks every time they are close.
I still have questions about what happens between Ashley, Cole, and Dale, and the ending of Echoes of Us while not a cliffhanger, does leave things open for a sequel that would answer the questions that you will have left after you are done reading this book.
This book will be an amazing read for anyone who loves time travel romances, alternate realities (kind of like sliders), love triangles, single POV from the perspective of the FMC, miscommunication/no communication, and second chances.
N.L. Silver is an indie author and this is her debut novel. And this was an amazing debut novel and I can't wait to read more from her. Echoes of Us is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it. This book is going to enthrall you from the very beginning and it will keep you captivated till the very end.
I had the privilege of beta-reading this book so I can confidently say that it was a masterpiece from the very beginning. Below are a spoiler-free premise layout, followed by what makes this a 5⭐ read.
On paper, Ashley’s life is perfect: she’s happily married and has a baby on the way, building a family with the man of her dreams who holds her in equally high regard. There’s a secret looming over their relationship, however, and it has EVERYTHING to do with her husband’s twin, who passed away long before they got together. They argue over his refusal to address the issue and, in a moment of anger, Ashley utters a wish - to know her husband as he was before the tragedy. She wakes up back in her college years, going to the same place as both twins, and quickly discovers a horrifying truth: Her husband, Cole, is a callous playboy, while his brother, Dale - whom she never got to meet - is actually the man she fell in love with. Basically, Cole adopted/stole Dale’s personality after he died. With her reality replaced with this fever dream, Ashley has to decide which man she loves: the man she married, or the one she fell in love with.
I loved this book. I went into it expecting an angsty/fluffy romance and was completely blindsided by the immersive college setting, the lovable characters (even the supporting cast! GO EZRA!) and the deep dive into the consequences of viewing life, and the people in it, through a biased POV. It ended up being a fascinating exploration of what it means to be a person, to be unique, and an analysis of what it means to love someone and what it costs us, as well as why it’s worth it.
This book is one-of-a-kind. Truly. Don’t miss out.
“Because I don’t think you would’ve liked me very much.”
That’s what Cole Westwood said—when he was her husband. Before Ashly got socked back in time.
Now, she meets the younger version of him. And the worst part? He might be right.
This is Cole before he became the man who could look at her like she was the only real thing left in the world. Before the grief. Before his father and brother died. Before he ever knew how to love her.
She finds herself at Harvard, chasing grades like they’ll save her—while he, a boy who never seems to try, solves the impossible between sips of coffee and his smiles are still armor.
I loved how many people tell her to stay away. * His best friend? Brutal. * Her best friend? Desperately trying to protect her. * His brother—the one who’s going to die? Ok he is cute, got nothing on him.
This book grabbed me on page one and never let go. It was the easiest read I’ve had all year. And chapter 20? Very spicy. (🔥)
If you loved The Cruel Prince for its morally gray love interest, and Atlantis for its time travel—this one will own you.
What if a wish you made in frustration sends you back in time to before you met your spouse? Would you still choose them? Or would you fall for someone else? Ashley Carter is about to find out.
N.L. Silver's debut novel brings us an engaging time-travel romance. The plot held my attention from beginning to end. The writing is beautiful and descriptive. Silver is able to pull the reader into scenes where you feel like you're right alongside the characters, cramming for exams and debating physics theories.
The characters were authentic and charming. Ashley had a lot of growth over the course of the book. She learned that she can't control everything and needs to let things happen as they may. She finally discovers that life is messy and you can't force things that don't want to be forced.
I'm looking forward to seeing what N.L. Silver brings us next.
Thank you to N.L. Silver for an ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
Some books doesnt just tell a story - they echo the parts that are still healing, and ways to heal forward. There is also hope. The kind that aches in your chest. And what if you stumble across the chance to go back in time? To learn? To understand? To change? To heal? Or just holding to the hope that this time you might somehow get it right and let it play along?
This book holds my attention from the beginning to the end. A strong storyline - easy to follow, great character dynamics with the blend of the right amount of side characters that doesnt feel overwhelming but strong support, beautifully written, and it got me just the right places to grasp the right blend of emotions. And it definitely me got me curious if there's more to come.
Thank you for the ARC opportunity, im leaving this review voluntarily.
I love books that make you think, and it’s been a while since I read a romance that had real depth to it. We follow Ashley as her life gets torn apart and she has to start over from zero. Her husband, who she loved and trusted, suddenly feels like a stranger and a womanizer. Then there’s his brother Dale, who she didn’t even know when he was alive, and somehow reminds her of her husband more than her husband does. She’s stuck in between, trying to figure out if she can save Dale’s life without losing what’s left of her relationship with Cole. It’s deep, emotional, and takes you on a ride. Also, kind of spicy, which I definitely didn’t mind.
Just a warning: it ends on a cliffhanger. So don’t read it expecting a happily ever after. It’s more of a happy for now.
I couldn’t put Echoes of Us down! If you love books that blend emotional depth with a bit of sci-fi twist, this one’s for you. Ashley is such a compelling character. She’s dealing with memories from other timelines, and you really feel the weight of her decisions as she tries to make sense of her current life. One scene that really hit me is when she steps out onto the balcony during a party at Dale’s apartment, calls someone she’s been fighting with, and just owns up to how badly she’s messed things up. It’s raw, honest, and feels totally real.
I also loved the complex dynamic between her, Cole, and Dale, it’s not your typical love triangle. The writing is sharp, the pacing is great, and the themes of identity and letting go hit hard. Highly recommend for fans of character-driven stories with a speculative edge!
Wow, what a read! I'm not really a romance book reader, but I picked this book up anyway, and boy did I not regret that decision. The romantic plot was really intriguing. The characters felt real and complex, and it was wonderful to see them evolve, change as their relationships unfolded in the book. The writing was also great. In some of the scenes in the book I really seemed to feel what the characters were feeling. Tension, emotion, fear, love. This book has it all. The setting was also really cool. The author really sets the scene well, and the plot works really well in this book's setting.
Definitely highly recommend this book to any romance fans, or anyone who likes good writing. Go pick it up!
"You know what's weird?" she asked him one day, both of them surrounded by his collection of books on ancient religions. "How we need distance sometimes to really see what's in front of us."
...
I went into this expecting an intriguing time travel/alternate universe romance story but came out having read a very thought provoking story about life's choices.
While there is a bit of intrigue seeing how Ashley gets along with Cole vs Dale in the alternative timeline at Yale, the story spends time focusing a lot on how our choices shape not only our own lives, but can influence the lives of others around us. And it was incredibly touching to watch Ashley discover what truly is at the core of her love for Cole, both in her original life, and in his past.
I thought this would be a standard romance novel with a time travel twist so the depth and complexity of the characters caught me off-guard.
Echoes of Us follows a very flawed cast of generally good people who just happen to have sharp edges where they break or fall apart. No one is inherently evil but they're all occasionally unkind. No one is a saint but they're all doing their best not to hurt their loved ones. You can't always spare other people pain but you can learn from your mistakes and do better in the future - that's the fundemental lesson here.
Highly recommended for readers who love character-first fiction.
I devoured this book in two days. I just couldn’t put it down!
The suspense of watching Ashley travel back in time and wondering who she would ultimately end up with kept me on the edge of my seat. Beyond the intrigue, it’s also a heartfelt story about truly seeing someone for who they are and loving them as they are, rather than trying to mold them into what you think they should be.
The writing was great, the pacing flawless, and every chapter left me eager for the next. The tension between the characters was electric. I could practically feel the sparks leaping off the page.
I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a fresh, unforgettable romance.
This novel is a poignant, emotionally intelligent novel that blends romance with speculative introspection. For readers drawn to stories complicated by events such as memory, grief, and identity, The author offers a compelling narrative that lingers well beyond the page. The idea of timelines and he twin dynamic is particularly compelling, inviting readers to question how trauma shapes character and the influence that people feel they can have over events to control the future is seen in the character of Ashley.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
[Received as an ARC] 3.5 stars! I was so intrigued with the magic aspect of this book and it was genuinely so interesting from start to finish. I didn't know what to expect throughout any of the book and it was such an interesting concept that I hadn't really read before. I loved the almost mystery of seeing how this alternate reality would impact the characters and their dynamic, and I especially loved when the main character, Ashley, first saw that she was in some different reality. The ending was also so interesting and I really liked how it resolved all the conflicts and mysteries that were scattered during the rest of the book. Also, typically with romance books it has some obvious aspects to it, like who's going to end up together..etc, but I really had no idea what direction this book was going in and I was so intrigued to keep reading. The only thing I didn’t love was the fact that there’s not really an explanation on the reason why she time travelled and it also doesn’t give full closure to what happens to the characters after the book ends.
Highlights: "'Think about it-if every decision spawns a new reality, then we're not just choosing for ourselves, we're choosing for an infinite number of possible selves.' His smile widened, genuine in a way that made her heart skip. 'But doesn't that paralyze you? The weight of all those possibilities?' 'No,' she said softly. 'It frees you. Because somewhere, in some timeline, every choice works out.'" "'That's the thing about life, sweetheart. We make choices without knowing the ending. We just... hope. And sometimes, that hope pays off.'" "'Some things aren't meant to be fixed,' he murmured against her hair. 'But I think... I think some things don't need fixing. They're perfect in their imperfection.'"
This book was a very cute realistic fiction book that carried mystery in the plot. But it seems like a big underlying message of the book is that even though you want to know the truth, it can hurt you more or even make you have more questions.
