3.5 - ”I don’t want just one night.” Stars.

I am a huge fan of Lauren Smith, The Shadows of Stormclyffe hall was one of my top ten PNR reads of 2014, add to that the fact that I fell head over heels in love with her League of Rogues series and I am one smitten kitten for this author.

Lauren offers the same immersive and engrossing writing style that I have come to expect with The Gilded Cuff as well as a uniquely different storyline offering thrills, spills, romance, suspense and a little kink as well as a really likeable couple too sink your reading teeth into.

Sophie and Emery run into each other at The Gilded Cuff a high class underground BDSM club on the Long Island, Gold Coast. Initially Emery isn’t aware that their meeting has actually been engineered by Sophie, who is actually a, investigative reporter looking for the full story of his and his twin brothers kidnapping and subsequentcaptivity 25 years previous, in view of solving the crime. Emery escaped, his brother is believed to have died whilst creating a diversion that enabled Emery his freedom. Sophie believes that the threat to Emery is still very real; Emery seeing an opportunity to educate Sophie in the ways of a Dom/sub relationship makes her an offer she can’t and doesn’t want to refuse.

”Your story, my submission.”

The chemistry between the two is palpable from their first meeting, and even though Sophie encompasses everything Emery actively tries to avoid in his life since the kidnapping, he can’t seem to leave her at The Gilded Cuff when he heads for home the evening.

At this point, I do have to raise my hand and ask a few questions in relation to the timeline that the rest of the story takes place over. Bearing in mind the first 80% of the book spans approximately three days, (unless I missed something) the speed at which things happen between Sophie and Emery, from the development on their feelings towards one another, decisions about their relationship course, more revelations about both of their pasts, as well as the ease and unquestioning acceptance that Sophie just steps into the role of submissive to Emery’s Master, all felt a little rushed.

”Hold on to this moment, don’t think about tomorrow. Just be with me.”

The story does clip along at a very rapid pace, and you are certainly not given a chance to get bored as I have come to expect with Lauren’s lyrical and on occasion somewhat poetic writing style. Every character and every aspect of the plot is fully described and developed. I still loved The Gilded Cuff, I just think the time-span that the bulk of the story was told over was a little too ‘speedy’ for the amount that actually happened. It would have worked over a couple of weeks even a month just as well and would have removed all the ‘insta-everything’ that happened between Emery and Sophie because of it.

The Gilded Cage is due in April 15, the developments and revelations in the last 20% of The Gilded Cuff ensure that it promises to be another ‘edge of your seat’ read from the incredible imagination of Lauren Smith.

What I loved writing most about The Gilded Cuff was the mansions on Long Island. Digging into the old historical 1920s oil boom mansions on the Gold Coast was fascinating. Some of the most amazing houses ever built were on the Gold Coast and only a few have survived since the 1920s and haven't been destroyed. The way the houses were built, and the extravagence and opulence that went into their building and the types of parties that happened there were unbelieveable. I wanted to capture that Great Gatsby era but in a modern day setting when I wrote my book.

So last year, I was scrolling through my kindle trying to decide what book should I read. All I knew, I was looking for some quick read. And so when I finally decided to read this book titled Forbidden, I found myself practically inhaling it. I was hooked and had to research who is this Lauren Smith. So after a few messages exchanged, I practically adored this author. And so when Lauren messaged me if I was interested in reading her other series called Surrender I was like hell yeah I would love to read. And how could I not, when she told me “Michelle, If you loved Tristan then I think you will love my alpha male characters in the Surrender Series.” I was practically sold. Lauren did not need to say anymore.

photo 20c2809d2b4124f4d60201ef1ace52_zpsdxvpgbai.gif “Almost had her? No. He definitely had her, practically wrapped up with a bow on top, totally and completely his. No question.”

The Gilded Cuff was dangerously erotic, sensual and suspenseful. Lauren Smith did not disappoint me at all when she delivered a storyline that had elements of suspense, mystery, erotic BDSM, and romance undertones woven in the story to give readers a full spectrum and depth of the raw emotions and motivations for the main characters. In this novel that is built on the premise of solving a mystery, Ms. Smith will capture and tug the hearts of her readers as she bombards us with a sensual story of two strangers finding love and passion in an unlikely circumstance. As Sophie Ryder surrenders herself to Emery Lockwood in body and mind, she soon will discover that she may be also surrendering her heart to him as well.

#GildedCuff

Sophie Ryder is an investigative journalist, who tackles on unsolved kidnapping and murder cases. And The Lockwood’s 25 year old kidnapping case is one case that Sophie hopes to solve. So when Sophie meets Emery, she offers to surrender herself to Emery in exchange for information on what really happened to him and his twin and how did he escape from his kidnappers. She thinks that Emery’s abductors are still after him and his life in danger.

photo 20c2809d2b4124f4d60201ef1ace52_zpsdxvpgbai.gif “He kissed her with raw possession, his mouth showing her how wicked it would be between them. Wild, dark, and completely free. She wanted that more than anything, the freedom to let go, to give in to the erotic dreams she’d spent years ignoring but never had felt safe enough to give in to before. His kiss broke down every barrier, obliterated every part of herself she tried to hide.”

Emery Lockwood and his twin Fenn were taken from their home when they were 8 years old. And now 25 years later, Emery is still reeling from his abduction and the loss of his twin brother. Emery uses his domination and sex as his way of taking control of the situation and so when he meets Sophie, he is intrigued by her beauty, vulnerability, and inquisitive nature. So when she agrees to his demands of her submission, he begins to open up to her and tells her of what really happened twenty-five years ago. Slowly, he begins to tell her things that no one knew and how Finn sacrificed his life in order for Emery to escape.

#GildedCuff1

As Emery and Sophie begin to form a bond, the sexual attraction between them begins to intensify. Emery knew the moment he laid eyes on her that she was his. His only. And so when he gave her his cuff, it signified that she was indeed special. But as Emery begins to let his guards down, danger begins to threaten his safety and the people that he loves. What happens when his abductor from 25 years ago wants to finish what he started and destroy the love of Emery and Sophie? Will Emery be able to take losing another person he loves?

photo 20c2809d2b4124f4d60201ef1ace52_zpsdxvpgbai.gif “She surrendered herself, her heart and everything in her that she’d held secret all her life. He owned her and she couldn’t find the strength to care, not tonight.”

The Gilded Cuff was a devastatingly emotional and sensual romantic suspense. Lauren Smith did not miss a beat as she continue to string along her readers on one roller coaster ride that was full of twist and turns. If you are a fan of alpha males and tough heroines, then this series is for you. All I can say is that Lauren Smith has definitely me surrendering as she holds me hostage with this series. I seriously can’t wait to dive into the next book.

O.M.G Where do I begin with book!? How about that I didn't want it to end!

This right here is what we have been craving for, it's everything FOSG wasn't (I know I know some people think that books the cats meow. Not me.) The information on the bdsm lifestyle is accurate. Drive me nuts when you see books out there that fail to portray the lifestyle correctly. This does, even has some break down scenes which I appreciated that detail. Like in the first chapter when Sophia enters the club, they as her her status & explain the house rules.

This book it hits all the marks,

-wonderful character development (people are real, no one is perfect that all have their own battle scars if you would from their past.)

-detailed scenes (the mansion, can picture it in my head. past memories I can see them)

-realistic emotions ( I can see myself reacting the same way in many of these scenes)

-sexy time lol (who doesn't love that!)

It's an erotic mystery that I couldn't put down. I am officially addicted & need that next book now!

**JOSIE'S REVIEW**

I want to start off by saying this book was nothing at all like I expected. It was by far more than I imagined. I have never read a book by Lauren Smith, but I have added her to my Goodreads and Amazon author lists.

I thought The Gilded Cuff was just a BDSM book but it was much more than that. The author gives readers a REAL STORY that grabbed me at the first page up until the very end. Yes we have some really kinky, steamy sex but the author also gives readers suspense, danger, mystery and a deep genuine love connection that is so powerful and caring. There was no denying these characters commitment to one another. I love a book that challenges me and one that makes me keep my guard up and The Gilded Cuff was that kind of book. The story flowed beautifully. The progression and character development were flawless and the details in the story line was captivating.

At the age of 7 Sophie Ryder witnessed her best friend Rachel get kidnapped. She wasn’t able to save her. Years later she has become an investigative reporter studying kidnap cases. She has a tendency to notice crucial patterns that predators repeat. She feels that she owes it to Rachel to help those who have lost someone to evil. This is how Sophie comes to Gilded Cuff in Long Island, an exclusive BDSM club in Long Island. She has studied the case of Emery Lockwood, a survivor of a kidnapping 25 years ago. She is afraid that he might be the target of another kidnapping attempt and this time he might not be a survivor. Sophie was not expecting to see this gorgeous, powerful, dominant man that made her crave and feel desired. Sophie was about to make a deal with Emery that will forever change her life.

“I’m not like other men, Sophie. Scars are a sign of strength, survival. Someday you’ll be brave enough to show me, and I’ll prove you have nothing to be ashamed of. Now, I am willing to accept the deal you proposed. Are you willing in return.”

“Yes, I’ll do it. Your story, my submission.”

Emery Lockwood is the complete opposite of what one might think after his experience. At the age of 8 he and his twin brother Finn were kidnapped from their family home in Long Island. He was held captive for weeks when he escaped his abductors but left his brother Finn behind. 25 years later Emery is a recluse. He lives in a constant state of attention, fearing that one day someone will try to hurt him again. Emery, has certain taste in the bedroom. He likes control and when he meets Sophie she immediately intrigues him. Sophie is a spit fire that is challenging to him but she also brings him a state of peace and calm. Something he has not had in 25 years. He decides to take Sophie up on her deal to exchange his story for her submission. How hard can it be? Little does Emery know that he and Sophie will share more than his bed. A bed and a home he has never taken any other woman to. With Sophie he didn’t feel reclusive or the need to hide away from everyone. He felt free.

“I put these cuffs on you. Even if they aren’t on you all the time, the symbolism is the same. Cuffs represent a claimed sub. A dom cuffs a sub he wishes others to know belongs to him. To me they are a sign of commitment. A cuffing is not always temporary, Sophie. Especially not for me, I’ve never cuffed w woman before. I want you like I’ve never wanted anyone, and I don’t want just one night. You’re mine. You’re not free to leave e, or this.”

Emery and Sophie’s story of love does not happy quickly. It happens gradually while they each work to close old wounds. I truly enjoyed reading and watching the two of them fall in love. The inner dialogue they had was easy to understand but seeing their traumatic pasts it was hard. When they believe there is nothing that will get in their way their past creep in making a comeback. It’s a race against the clock and Emery and Sophie will not let history repeat itself. With the help of Emery’s friends and bodyguard the couple will work together to save Emery.

The author does an amazing job fading to the past. I cried for the young Sophie and the young Emery. I rejoiced for their new found love and I screamed when danger came knocking at their door. One revelation has Emery shocked and hopeful. He is ready to face the evil that threatens to take him. He no longer is fearful because his love for Sophie has made him strong. We do not get a CH, but I am happy to know that this story will continue. There are still questions that need to be answered and more truths and secrets to be revealed. This book truly will have you on a journey that will have you believing that true love can endure all.

“I love your luscious figure. You have full breast, perfect to fill my palms, hips made for the span of my hands to grip. And don’t get me started on your ass. I have very wicked thoughts about that particular body part.”

“I’m glad you’re okay. I couldn’t bear to lose you too. You’re not allowed to something like that ever again. I belong to you, only you.”

What a beautifully written heartbreaking story. I can't go into to much of the story without giving certain things away so I will say that Emery Lockwood has become reclusive due to events that happened as a child, one of the only times he ventures out is to go to a luxurious BDSM club on Long Island’s Gold Coast "The Gilded Cuff". Sophie Ryder is a Journalist that digs deep and helps the police solve kidnapping cases. When Emery and Sophie meet at "The Gilded Cuff" there is such an attraction that you can feel it through the pages. Lauren Smith does such a beautiful job with telling this story that you feel every emotion as if you were a part of the actual couple. This is the first book I have read by Lauren Smith and it will NOT be the last. I look forward to the next book in this series because it will be another ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ read if it is anything like this first book.

From the blurp it seems this book about dark BDSM romance. When I finish with this book, i realize the BDSM is not there. Its more kinky suspense romance. The plot is also not that dark eventhough there is kidnapping element on it.

Character development is ok. Chemistry is there but not burning hot. I want to see more of heat between Sophie and Emery. I wish Emery will be more brooding. He is bit confusing character. He wants to be dark mysterious dom and at the end he becomes this beta male character who is passive.

Aside from character development, I still enjoy this book very much. Looking forward to read the next book.

Received an ARC for review

First book I've read by Ms. Smith, but so won't be the last. This book was just amazing from the first scene with Emery and Sophia at the club till the preview of Fenn. It had suspense, love, BDSM, action, mystery. I just loved it, and can't wait for book two. I hope there are more than three books planned because we met so many great secondary friends that I want to know more about.

The Gilded Cuff blew me away!! It was so much more and better than I expected it would be. It was magnificent and I wholeheartedly loved it!

Sophie Ryder is obsessed with Emery Lockwood's past. She believes that he can give her clues to help solve a kidnapping case and she'll do whatever it takes to talk to him, even if she has to go into a BDSM club to do it. No matter how much his story has fascinated her, nothing can prepare her for how the man himself captivates her mind, body, and soul.

Emery Lockwood doesn't talk about his past--with anyone--most especially not a reporter. However there is something about Sophie that enchants him. Before long, he finds himself agreeing to give her his story in exchange for her surrender. He's determined to keep his heart to himself, but the closer they get, the harder it becomes.

I thought this book was going to have a lot of sex in it from start to finish and be like the standard BDSM books I've read, but that's not the case. The BDSM is actually pretty light--don't get me wrong--Emery is still very much a dominant man and he demands Sophie's surrender, but he's not that big on punishment and he lets her get away with a lot. I really loved that, and that they build a relationship of trust and intimacy before going all the way. It made everything more special, meaningful, and passionate when they finally do come together.

The Gilded Cuff is a dark, sensual tale that teases and tantalizes the senses. It's all about anticipation, seduction, and surrender. You will be every bit as enthralled with the story as Sophie is with Emery.

This book made me laugh and cry and smile. It squeezed my heart and choked me up. I was just completely invested in this story from the mystery and danger to the romance and passion. I can't tell you how much I loved this spectacular book and, oh my gosh, I absolutely CANNOT WAIT for the next one!!!

The Gilded Cuff is a standalone, it's told from multiple points of view, and Emery and Sophie get their well-deserved HEA. ~ Paige, 5 stars

5 Stars!

What an amazing book. This book was crazy good y'all. It was sexy, seductive, suspenseful, and full of twists and turns at every page. This book captivated me from the very first page and didn't let me go until the very end. I will admit this is my first book by this author and surely won't be my last. I cannot wait for more from this next sexy and suspenseful new series that will take you on a ride that pushes your boundaries and makes you step outside of the box.

This is Emery and Sophie's story. Both are damaged and find a connection with each other in the most unlikely way. A deal is made that neither know will change them forever. Emery is damaged from something traumatic that happened to he and his brother. Sophie is also damaged from her past. Sophie needs Emery, just not in the way she would ever suspect. Both can find redemption and healing in one another if they open their hearts. Full of twists and turns at every page, get ready to watch a seductive love story spun like a web unraveling slowly over time.

Oh Emery... I love an alpha male who is damaged. I love watching them heal. Our Emery was damaged. He had a past that scarred him. And Sophie. I admired her determination to solve his case and the lengths she went too. I loved the slow build to their relationship and the ultimate explosion of their love. Their story was beautifully written.

I highly recommend this book.

The feel of Emery's mouth on hers, his arms around her body holding her protectively, flooded her with strength and hope.

3.5 stars

This is so much different than what I thought it would be. Sure, I thought there would be some sex in it, but the other I was quite surprised. It's adventurous, a thriller, and mysterious.

The Gilded Cuff by Lauren Smith
Overview by Amazon:
Every passion has its price . . .
Journalist Sophie Ryder has been following Emery Lockwood's story since she was a little girl. There has always been something in his haunted eyes that she couldn't resist and now, when she's certain he holds the key to solving a string of kidnappings, she'll do anything to speak to him. Even if it means venturing deep into the seductive world of the Gilded Cuff, a luxurious BDSM club on Long Island's Gold Coast and Emery's personal playground.

However, Sophie wants more from Emery than just pleasure . . . she wants his past. And that is something he isn't willing to give-no matter who is asking. But every moment he spends with Sophie, Emery feels his control slipping and he knows it's only a matter of time before he surrenders to her heart, body, and soul.

I’ve read erotic, BDSM stories in the past. Obviously the example most people think of is Fifty Shades of Grey, but I think a true example of this genre is Maya Bank’s series. I don’t consider myself an expert on BDSM by any stretch of the imagination, but reading enough about certain proclivities has provided an education. It’s not always my favourite genre, as I like to use my imagination when reading. Not to get too personal here, but the domination part is exciting, but being hit or hurt has zero appeal for me. While I would never use the term ‘mommy porn’, there is a very strong reason that sex scenes interest scores of readers. Who hasn’t imagined that they were the woman being held and ravished in the hero’s arms?
Even though it isn’t my first choice of genre, I was very excited to read this book as I really like Lauren Smith’s writing. I figured that if anyone could make me enjoy this genre, it would be Lauren. This book definitely has elements of BDSM in it, but it so much more than that. It’s also a love story, a mystery and a thriller. This book is not just sex scenes one after another, but a fast paced story about two people who have been deeply damaged by the loss and fear from abduction.
We meet Sophie as she is infiltrating the Gilded Cuff sex club in order to meet Emery. She wants to interview him and hopefully help him solve the twenty-five year old mystery of who kidnapped him and his twin brother, Fenn. She has precious little sexual experience, which makes her appearance at a sex club almost laughable. She encounters Emery and is mesmerized by his power and command. Sophie was a complex character. At times she could seem young and almost naïve, yet she is very intelligent and thoughtful. Sophie submits to Emery’s dominance, but she could hold her own. Sophie is plagued by a traumatic past and she feels a bond with Emery. I felt Sophie was so brave to continually face her demons and work as an investigative reporter digging into cold cases. I also really loved that Sophie wasn’t tall, skinny and perfect. She has curves and has a tummy – what could be better to read about a woman who is like the average female and yet she still gets to go on this amazing and exciting adventure?
Emery is the amazing adventure that Sophie gets to embark upon. Emery is part of one of the wealthiest families on the East Coast. Along with his twin brother, they were kidnapped and kept hidden away for months until Emery could get away. His brother forced him to flee and Emery left him behind to die. The trauma of being kidnapped, deprived and the loss of his brother has made Emery virtually a social recluse. He is the president of his company and travels when necessary, but other than visits to his BDSM club, he remains in the grand, old home Lockwood. Emery is a Dom and wants Sophie as his submissive. Their relationship and feelings develop very fast. I liked that Emery had a heart. He wasn’t a cruel Dom and he had a wicked sense of humor. To me, his Dom sensibilities were the things you want in a man – protectiveness, concern, care and interest.
For a story that revolves around a Dom and Sub relationship, it took a while to get to see Emery and Sophie do the deed. It’s almost like a skilled lover – brings you to the brink over and over again without release. The story starts off hot and heavy and then the action cools down to move the plot along (which is great as many books in the genre ignore well developed plot), then it spikes again. Hot and needy you just want these characters to get each other off. The tantalizing build up between the two almost had me screaming in frustration! Which I am sure is the intention and it was so well done.
The other element of this book that I really liked was the history and description of Long Island. The old mansions are described, along with the neglect and razing the twenty-first century has wrought. One of my very, very favourite movies is the 1988 version of Clue. It takes place in a beautiful, old mansion on the East Coast. For some reason, every time the mansions were mentioned, it was what came to my mind. It almost seemed like the Lockwood Mansion was another character in the story because of its history, connection to Emery’s tragedy and subsequent seclusion.
The mystery of who kidnapped Fenn and Emery is braided through the story. While it is the main plot line and what brings Emery and Sophie together, their relationship is a major portion of the story. The kidnapper and killer are still out there and once Sophie opens old wounds, strange things begin to happen again. I enjoyed this part of the book. It was thrilling to see Sophie and Emery deal with the danger and of course it only heightened Emery’s protectiveness. I didn’t see all the twists and turns coming, although I think I figured out who was responsible for the kidnapping. There is a great twist at the end of the book which sets the plot for the next book in the series.
A great start to a new series for Lauren Smith and lucky for the readers that we get to go on this great journey with the new characters and world she has created.

3 "Teach me to be strong." Stars

Reading The Gilded Cuff came about after requesting and receiving book two of this series on NetGalley. Several bloggers I follow rated this one high so I was excited to get to it. I liked this book. I liked the plot line especially. It was intriguing and interesting. Lauren Smith writes quite colorfully providing detailed descriptions of places and people she's depicting in her stories. I really loved that aspect of reading this book because there were times the story felt almost surreal thanks to her lovely writing.

Emery, a reclusive dominant, and Sophie, a criminal journalist, meet on purpose - thanks to Sophie specifically seeking him out - at a private BDSM club called The Gilded Cuff. This first meeting proved to be sexually charged and actually fun between these two characters. As the book progresses Sophie and Emery enter into a bargain type of relationship. He'll reveal information to her about tragic past in exchange for her submission. My biggest issue with The Gilded Cuff was how it's touted as BDSM, Emery as a Dom, while neither aspect really comes to fruition in the book. He's not a hard core dominant which is fine but sexually he didn't seem a dominant at all but rather just physically and in their conversations. Sophie fights submission every chance she gets, questioning whether she could actually submit. Something about the D/s relationship just didn't ring true to me. There were times they would take 2 steps forward and 4 steps back.

If you can overlook this aspect, I think The Gilded Cuff was a rather enjoyable read. It's suspenseful and fun, witty and charming with two characters you'll root to win. A plot twist sets up a nice stage at the end for book two, which I am excited to read to see how this author progresses the story. I hope if the next hero is a dominant there's more BDSM in the book, we shall see.

If you read the blurb and think that you’re looking at a straightforward BDSM/Erotica book, think again. I’d have to say that this is more Mystery with some BDSM/Erotica elements. For example, there is “literally” ONE scene in the club and it’s in the first chapter.

Ok, now that I’ve gotten THAT out of the way. This was actually a really good read. I was completely drawn in from the beginning and once I hit the 3rd chapter I was hooked.

Being an investigative journalist, Sophie finds herself bartering for her story. Little does she know what she’s “really” getting herself into. Emery isn’t just a hot billionaire Dom, he’s got some serious demons that need to be addressed and Sophie thinks she can help.
Emery has no idea what the hell has drawn him to Sophie, but he’s going along for the ride. She seems to bring out the kid in him and because of that, he’s extremely curious. She also seems to have a secret of her own that he’s determined to figure out.

This is the first book of the Gilded Series. Ms. Smith captured your attention from page one. You will be suck in Emery's marred hermitic world. Emery Lockwood is a tortured lost soul that is haunted by the kidnapping of himself and his twin. Sophie Ryder comes into his life like a shining lustrous ray of hope which he sees the same hurt and agony with her eyes. Their undeniable love grows between kindred spirits pulled together by tragedy in their life. There is enough stream to even out the woe. I am hooked as always on Ms. Smith's series. I am waiting on pins and needles for the next books. I received a complimentary copy from the Author for an honest review.

This is gonna be a lovely series. It's got all of Lauren's trademark writing style, but crosses over into contemporary quite nicely. It's not in your face BDSM/erotica, but subtle and sexy, focusing on the underlying trust necessary in a Dom/sub relationship.

I also loved the way Lauren wove backstory (old newspaper articles) in with the current story. Very creative. The characters were great and definitely laid a strong foundation for the remainder of the series.

Looking forward to seeing who's up next!

I know I'm fucked up in the head. But that's me. I love the books were the action occurs in a sex club, I love the menage' books, dark, dirty and mindfuck.
But unfortunately, for me, this book action didn't occur in the sex club, and it hasn't had a menage'.

Sophie is a journalist and has one obsession....Emery Lockwood.

Emery has a very painfully past. He thought he got away, but he is mistaken. Emery had a twin brother. They both were kidnapped when they were kids, and Emery made it out alive, thanks to his twin brother, but his brother didn't. So he feels guilty. He never talked to anyone about what happened and how he got away. In the time they were kidnapped, the Lockwood family waited for the ransom calls, but they never came. It was obvious that the reason they were kidnapped wasn't for money. So after 3 months from the kidnapping, Emery gets away. Alive.

James Franco | Icon Magazine Spain November 2013:

Now after 25 years from the kidnapping, Sophie appears in Emery's BDSM Club to take him an interview about what happened 25 years ago, and to warn him about what's coming and discover who is behind all this.

Grace in her 6 year (although her hair needs to be just a bit longer than her waist):
Sophie got her obsession on Emery because of her childhood best friend. When she was 11 years old, her best friend was kidnapped right before her eyes by a stranger and murdered. Her friend was never found dead or alive. But they all new that she was murdered. Sophie feels guilty because she never could talk about what happened, she could not describe the stranger to the police so they could catch him. For this very reason, Sophie dedicates her life and her carrier to became a journalist and works with the police and the FBI at this kind of cases, the most of them resolved by her.
So in exchange for Emery story, if he accepts to give her his story, Sophie gives her submission, she becomes his submissive.

At his feet, where she belongs, she knows she only wants to please him ~JoJo:

The story is good, it has action, mystery, secrets. But I don't like a lot of stuff. The story has potential, but I don't like how it's written. It's very simple written and it has things that don't match.
For example:
1. Emery it is presented to us like a rough and tough Dom. He is marked by the incident that happened 25 years ago, so he is a very reserved and private guy, very
thoughtful and guarded, and when Sophie comes along and says the magic word....BOOM, he gives in, in front of Sophie, who she can be ANYONE. He invites her in his home at her first proposal, although in his house doesn't enter anyone, just a few people.
2. He's a Dom who lives ONLY in the BDSM stile, but with Sophie, suddenly his all vanilla and sensible. And all of the sodden he loves her, he can't live without her, and she is scared. Such a drama queen. But she loves him.
3. The scene when they meet is awful. Is simple and free of chemistry and atraction. Most of the book I didn't feel the attraction and the chemistry between them. Just in the end.
4. Sophie wasn't a virgin. She had sex 2 times in her life, and with 2 different guys, and she doesn't know she can have sex with 2 man at once? WTF? For fuck sake she is a journalist, she doesn't heard about porn?
"Sophie’s ears started ringing; her chest tightened. She couldn’t think…two men…two…Was that even possible? She knew logically a big bed could hold three people, but was a woman capable of withstanding that much…passion?"

Seriously W T F? Porn !?

I will continue to read the next books in the series because I want to know how the story goes on and to find the bad guy, although I have my suspicion I know how it is.
Like I said, the story has potential.

This is only my personal opinion and I hope I didn't upset anyone.

When I began reading ‘The Gilded Cuff’ I was a little surprised about the beginning. We meet Sophie, a journalist, when she tries to get in contact with Emery Lockwood in a luxurious BDSM club on Long Island. Sophie has felt an connection with Emery ever since she found out about his past and the tragic event in which he lost his twin brother, and now she desperately needs to find him because she thinks his life is in danger. Like I said, I was surprised about the beginning being in a BDSM club and I was a little afraid this would be an erotic novel without much depth. But of course I should have known that Lauren Smith doesn’t write stories without depth and romance.

After the, somewhat surprising beginning, I immediately fell in love with this story and the dark and brooding Emery Lockwood. This book is definitely worth reading so don’t get scared away by the BDSM lifestyle. Although there is some BDSM stuff in this book, it’s very tamed and not at all the main element in this story. Soon it became clear to me that this story was not about the BDSM, but about two hurt people with a tragic past who find peace in one another.
After Emery makes a pact with Sophie they soon get to know each other more and more. And a beautiful love story begins.

I loved the setting Lauren created in ‘The Gilded Cuff’. The beautiful mansion in Long island with the enchanting rooms, I could totally imagine the Lockwood manor in my mind. The characters are very intriguing and I loved Sophie and Emery very soon after starting this book. Sophie is this strong, kind of lonely, twenty four year old with a desire to save people. Sophie is shy but will do anything to save the guy who’s face followed her ever since she was a little girl. So when Sophie first set foot in the exclusive club in Long Island, I could totally feel her anxiety about stepping into this strange and unknown world.
Emery looks to the outside world as an arrogant and strong guy. But soon it becomes clear that he is really kind and loving but was just so scarred by his horrific past, and he didn’t know how to get past his fear.

I definitely loved this book. It’s definitely one of my new favorite books and I can’t wait to read more in this series. Lauren Smith did another amazing job and I would recommend this book to all other romance readers out there. This book is filled with romance and also keeps you at the front of your seat. There are a lot of thrilling and action filled moments in this book, when someone tries to hurt Emery and his loved ones. This book just doesn’t get boring.

Somewhere inside this club, a man’s life was hanging by a thread and she would save him and get the story of the century.

My first new to me author read of the new year, and I’m so glad I came across this. Granted, the cover trend of using a single inanimate object (a key, jewelry or some random, inanimate object) is rather uninspired, but the story inside was right up my alley. An investigative journalist, a reclusive CEO and a twenty-five year old unsolved kidnapping made for one sexy story filled with passion, tension and great action.

I’ll admit that I went into this thinking that the story would have a lot of sex, perhaps both main characters would be commitment phobes, throw in some drama given her job and his history but throw in some BDSM that would cause them to open up. You know, pretty standard stuff. But I was so wrong.

Sophie (24) was a brave heroine, and I admired her selflessness and dedication for using her “gift” to help others. I believed her grief over her lost best friend and the circumstances of her disappearance, but I may have empathized more had it been a sibling, Regardless, I was surprised that such a young heroine was actually very likable. Sophie and Emery communicated very well right from the onset, and that flowed throughout the entire book. She was upfront about her intentions from the beginning, and she didn’t try very hard to talk herself down from the budding feelings towards Emery.

I loved the hero! Emery (33) was a reclusive CEO with PTSD and a Dominant. But don’t expect to see him frequent the club or have a Red Room of Pain in his mansion. He liked control in the bedroom, but even then he was very lenient about rules and punishment. I loved the interaction and his relationship with his closest friends and confidants: his long-time bodyguard Hans, Cody, a young hacker he had taken under his wing, Royce and Wes. They were a close knit group of men who had each other’s backs.

Color me surprised that Sophie and Emery didn’t jump each other’s bones as quickly as possible. I was so not expecting the slow burn, but I welcomed it. They got to know each other, build trust, and grow closer as a believable pace. I mean, they didn’t have sex until 60% into the book, and even then the few sex scenes weren’t just about the physical release, but there was intimacy borne of a deeper connection. Sophie was more reluctant than Emery to call what they had a relationship, but at least they both recognized what was happening to them and they didn’t tuck tail. He was thoughtful and caring, and they were both aware of the positive changes from their connection.

The suspense was great. I found myself suspecting everyone, not just the most obvious choice. The climax was really good, and I perversely enjoyed that the author went there. If I had one complaint, it would be the overuse of animal references in regards to Emery’s appearance or behavior, e.g.:

“He looked every bit a prince, a leader of a pride of lions.”

“He was like a leopard: sleek, graceful, powerful. He could corrupt a legion of the purest angels, have them tearing their wings from their backs …”

“He was a tiger prowling the edge of his cage of control and she was pulling him by the tail.”

“The sharp lines of his face softened with a lazy grin. Like a lion who’d just captured a little mouse…”

“.. then rubbed his cheek against hers like a possessive tomcat.”

Sophie was definitely very imaginative and talkative when it came to thinking about him.

Although the book ended on a happy note, I think the suspense portion of the plot with continue in the next book but with a different couple. There was a nice surprise that left some questions unanswered and a set up for the next book featuring Sophie’s feisty friend, Hayden. I will definitely follow the rest of this series.

When I read the synopsis to The Gilded Cuff, I thought this was going to be more of an erotic romance, but after reading the book, it seemed to me to be more romantic suspense with BDSM elements. That was okay for me though, because I really liked both the suspense plot and the romance between the main characters.

For me, the best part of The Gilded Cuff was Sophie and Emery. From the very moment they meet at the BDSM club, there’s definite heat between these two. I loved the opening scene at the club. When they make a (questionable) deal that puts them together 24x7, it was only a matter of time before they’d fall for each other. I thought the BDSM content was light, with Emery as a Dom with a heart, and Sophie as a mouthy submissive. They were cute together and I loved the romantic element of the golden cuffs.

They both have lots of baggage and rightfully so, based on what happened to them. I loved how they helped each other face some things, and I really liked the suspense plot regarding the kidnappers and who is ultimately behind it all, but at times it seemed uneven to me. There were a lot of twists and unexpected happenings and some of those scenes could have been “more”.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. I’ll definitely be looking for the second book in the series.

Sophie has been haunted by the loss of her friend for years and has made it her life’s mission to help others that have been or are currently in the same situation all in honor of the friend she feels she failed to save so long ago. When she runs across Emery’’s story she gets the sense that this man who has survived the worst tragedy imaginable may still be in danger and is hell bent on saving him if it is the last thing she does. To gain his trust she must go outside of her comfort zone as she never has before. Emery has locked himself away from the world for the past 25 years and is not a man who easily lets people in but when Sophie is presented to him there is something about her he just can’t resist. A story filled with loss, mystery, tragedy, hope and love. Will Sophie be able to save Emery? Will Emery allow Sophie in to not only save him from danger but himself as well? Can these two wounded souls heal each other and finally start living for the future instead of being stuck in the past?

The Gilded Cuff is jam packed with romance and suspense and hooks you from the very first page not letting go until the very end.

Sophie is an investigative reporter wanting to know more about what happened to two boys who were taken years ago. She needs to do so for two reasons. One to save the now grown man who is still in danger and to ease the pain and guilt she suffers because of something that happened when she was a child. She arranges to go to the BDSM club that Emery is a member of in order to interview him about his abduction. Things go a bit differently that she planned once she comes face to face with him and she ends up going home with him as his submissive. They share some scorching hot moments and end up falling for each other. She shares her plan for discovering who took him and keeping him safe. They decide to work together and are in for several surprises along the way.

I so loved Sophie and Emery's story. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I give The Gilded Cuff 5 hearts!

As a investigative journalist, Sophia strives to capture criminals and seeks to help to set the souls of the victims free.
Now her solving her lifetime obsession over the kidnapping victims, Emery and Fenn Lockwood, is just outside her reach. She is prepared to do whatever it takes to earn the trust of the only Lockwood survivor, Emery, in hopes he will allow her to tell the world his story. And she means anything... even if anything is allowing herself to be captured is the world of BDSM.

Wow this was a great read. I was caught up in their world the minute I began this book. The characters were fun and entertaining. The book was well written. I love the connection and relationship that builds between Emery and Sophia.

This book does end somewhat in a cliff hanger though.

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT INSTALLMENT!!

Well, DAMN!!!

That's definitely another addition to my must read authors and series :) I immensely enjoyed reading this first book in the Surrender series. The story was intriguing and fascinating, peppered with dangers, romance, hotness and suspense. The action is fast paced and there isn't even a moment in which you can get bored. It kept me on my toes nearly 100% of the time. Both, Emery and Sophie, are enchanting characters that gained my compassion from the first few words. They are well developed and their stories are so heartbreaking that I was near tears on more than one occasion.

Emery is definitely a delicious and broken alpha male. With his sandy blonde hair and mesmerizing hazelnut eyes, he can captivate you on the spot. But adding to that his dominant aura, his closed off personality and the broken soul that shows from his eyes, makes him one of the most desirable BBFs. I am usually more into the tall, dark and dangerous type but Emory is definitely the exception to the rule :) I loved reading how he starts changing when he meets Sophie, and with the help of her loving personality he starts healing without even realizing it in the beginning. The demons he carries from his childhood are definitely traumatic and would have destroyed many people but the strength he carries in himself helped him survive the nightmare he still relives every single night.

Sophie also carries demons of her own. Similar to Emery, she also had to live through a rather traumatic experience in her childhood and her own nightmare shaped her as the strong and intelligent woman she grew up to be. But deep inside she still blames herself for the traumatic loss she lived through. That's partially the reason she seeks Emery - to try and find the answers how to heal the gaping wounds in her heart. Even though she doesn't find the direct answers she is looking for, she find she other half who helps overcome her grief and pepper her everyday life with some burn the sheets activities ;)

The chemistry between Emery and Sophie are off the charts. They simply click together from the first moment their eyes lock on each other in the Gilded Cuff Club. With every passing moment the connection between the becomes stronger and every time they touch they just become more obsessed to each other. I have to say that their bedroom activities are so hot that they left me hot and bothered on more than one occasion.

The secondary characters are also quite interesting. I definitely cannot wait to read some more about them in the following books in the series. Each one of the deliciously sexy and dominant males are definitely worth the wait to read their stories. And Hayden is just so much fun with her feisty and sassy personality combined with her submissive side that I can't wait to read her story in the second book in the series. And of course I can't wait to see how the things with the danger following Emery will be solved.

In a few words, this was one of the best suspense books I've read recently. The danger and action are masterfully combined with romance, tenderness and hotness. The characters are charismatic and so lovable that I simply got attached to them and I can't wait to meet them in the next part of this awesome series. And I so can't wait to read about Hayden and her perfect Dom :) I am sure it will be an amazing story and I definitely want to find out what really happened to Emery's twin brother :) I have to say that I definitely recommend this book to all lovers of racier romances with a streak of danger and unexpected twists that will leave you reeling ;)

I have found a new go to author! This author writes with beautiful and colourful words, she paints a dynamic picture for the reader of every scene and emotion. The very original storyline was intriguing, exciting and interesting to read. I found it difficult to put this book down, it is a very good length too which I like in a novel. Each chapter starts with a New York Times news blurb, to remind the reader of the crime that this book is based on.

The main characters Sophie and Emery, are damaged characters, each having their own memories of kidnapping and the guilt that they shared in common. Sophia was a strong willed, feisty lady, with a gift for seeing the truth, as a journalist she sought to find the truth, the guilt in those that she studied and researched. She was damaged by a knife in a previous investigation, and this had affected her body image and kept her from seeking the love of a good man.

A quote from the book, "All of it was terrifying but enthralling at the same time. Like Alice before the looking glass, she'd marveled at the change in the way she saw the world. She'd chased a white rabbit down an unexpected trail and met the King of Hearts. She was still Sophie, still the same woman, but something inside her had been set free, unleashed from a cold, dark prison. The fire of her passion and the need to love and be loved burst from her without the strict restraint she'd once had."

Emery, is a reclusive man, who is haunted by the memories of his own kidnapping, and suffers the guilt of not being able to save his own twin brother. He has joined a BDSM club to meet woman, to have sex and go on with his life as a business owner who works from his own home, hiding from the world.

A quote from the book, "Emery kissed her temple and she cuddled deeper into the curve of his body. He liked her tucked into his side, the way they molded together....Never had a woman tempted him to the point of mindless madness. She'd reduced his world to one tiny yet infinite universe. Half of him wanted to send her away, remove the source of confusion which had upset his carefully controlled environment. The other half of him refused to let her leave his sight for even a moment. She belonged to him, and he never relinquished what was his."

The rest of the characters play key roles to move the story along, and to add depth to the main characters and the storyline. I especially loved young Cody, his passion for protecting his boss Emery, and his stamina and faith in Sophie to find the truth.

I was so happy to find this new release, and I will definitely look for more by this author!

The Gilded Cuff is book #1 in the Surrender series and the first book I have read by this author. I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review so here goes…

I enjoyed this book it’s a mix of drama and erotic romance and that totally worked for me!!!!

Sophie is tenacious, she has drive and is compelled to meet Emery and help him, at the start I wasn’t sure if I liked her but she definitely grew on me as the book progressed.

The book is called the Gilded Cuff and starts off in a BDSM club so I was expecting it to be seriously filthy but unfortunately this book turned out to be decidedly vanilla. There are some hints at the saucy stuff and there are the gilded cuffs that make an appearance, but mainly its sweet and sensual sex.

Emery is broken and beat down and I loved him, we never really find out what really happened to him and Fenn whilst they were kidnapped but I feel like we find out enough about it to honestly fall in love with Emery just for surviving.

I love that Emery’s friends become his family and support network Hans, Cody, Wes and Royce are all real characters and I’m hoping that they all get their stories told.

I love Sophie and Emery’s connection, their chemistry is instantaneous and even though it’s a tentative feeling at the start it completely consumed them.

I loved how the author built the tension around Antonio, the bloke was pure evil and I loved how his story panned out.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers but I will say that the revelation at the end is amazeballs and I am soooo looking forward to the second book in this series.

I really enjoyed this story.

The Gilded Cuff gets 4 stars from me.

Unlikely Hero

This was truly a touching and emotionally gripping read from Lauren Smith. Emery and Sophie's story is one of sadness, devastation, hope, growth, and unconditional love. Kidnapped at a young age along with his twin brother Fenn, Emery is absolutely devastated when he is the only one to return . Once back he pushed away those who loves him until he meets Sophie Ryder at the GILDED CUFF. Sophie who is a investigative journalist is struggling with her own demons from her childhood that plagues her everyday and she also believes that Emery is still a target for his kidnappers. What happened to these two was unimaginable and would break anyone. Different circumstances, but equally horrible and heartbreaking. From the very first chapter I was transported into these characters lives, feeling their emotions, fighting their demons alongside them. The chemistry between these two is off the charts SEXY and HOT, it's intense, all consuming, emotional, steamy and it had me turning the pages so fast, before I knew it, it was over and I was sad! I had become so engaged in this suspenseful and explosive read that I couldn't think of anything else but what was happening in the book. This series is shaping up to be one of those series that you always come back to when you want a true love story that will make you laugh, cry, and throw things! It has such a great plot and completely broken characters that you will root for anticipating their HEA, I so can't wait for book 2 THE GILDED CAGE!!!!
