This book needs a warning label:

You begin the book in Loveland Psychiatric Hospital, with some of the criminally insane. Dr. Christopher Kellan is about to meet his match in one named Donny Ray Smith. Donny Ray has been accused of murdering several young girls but is he insane?

Once you start this book you think it's going to be a decent read, you are minding your own business...just chilling. Reading.

Then the crazy shit starts happening.

It might be best to just go into this book knowing NOTHING! Don't read the reviews. DON'T get spoiled. Spoilers would ruin this book. Just go.

**5"A twisted mind is a terrible thing to waste"STARS**

 "Welcome to the jungle(ladies &)gentlemen"

This story starts off by introducing the reader to Dr. Christopher Kellan. Chris is a devoted husband, loving father to his six year old son, Devon ( I LOVE THIS KID) and dedicated psychologist at Loveland Psychiatric Hospital. Dr. Kellan treats those individuals housed in the Alpha twelve unit, which holds the facilities most unstable and menacing patients . Oh yeah, they're some badass mofo's.

Due to a comprise in Donny Ray Smith criminal case, he is transferred to Loveland, where his evaluation process starts all over again. Dr. Kellan & his co-worker Dr. Adam Wiley, must now decide if Donny Ray is indeed mentally unstable or a malinger, fit to stand trial for the murders of 10 young girls....thats if the authorities can ever locate the bodies.

During their first session Dr. Kellan senses a familiarity with Donny, but he can't figure out why.
   "I know those eyes"
Donny swears on his life that he's never met the missing girl, nor any of the girls he's accused of murdering . Donny admits that he keeps forgetting things; losing large chunks of time. He's confused. Scared. Troubled. . . Or maybe he's just a conning psychopath.

Gawd, I feel like I've said too much . . . . Okay, okay , I'll tell you one more thing about the story . While driving home from work, a little boy unexpectedly crosses the street causing Dr. Kellan to swerve In hopes of avoiding the child. Unfortunately in doing so, he drives directly into a tree.... And this is where things get really weird.. . .. and I shut up.

. . . Ciao!

Friends, this is one of the books where you and buddy should jump in blindly.
Come on, trust me it's fantastic .... or not. It's totally up to you.

Twisted took my mind on a journey that felt a bit like my brain was thrown into a tumble dryer, then taken out and used as a football, put in the freezer, the left to melt under a hot Tuscan sun before a Pathologist got the scalpel to it.

My brain hurts..

Let's just say, this book is a mind bending, mess with your head but brilliant read. No doubt one of the hits of 2015.

I had seen the early hype, I thought "nah, I bet it's not that good, I don't usually love the books everyone raves about" this time I was WRONG (happens now and then) as I also am a fan of the book, the author and the entire package that is TWISTED.

Synopsis bit (in case you missed it)..

The psychologist with a troubled past…

Dr. Christopher Kellan spends his days at Loveland Psychiatric Hospital, overseeing a unit known as Alpha Twelve, home to the most deranged and psychotic killers imaginable. His newest patient, Donny Ray Smith, is accused of murdering ten young girls and making their bodies disappear. But during his first encounter with Donny, Christopher finds something else unsettling: the man looks familiar.

The killer with a secret…

Donny Ray knows things about Christopher—things he couldn’t have possibly learned at Loveland. As the psychologist delves deeper into the mysterious patient’s case, Christopher’s life whirls out of control. The contours of his mind are rapidly losing shape, and his grasp on reality is slipping even faster. Is he going mad, or is that what Donny Ray wants him to think?

Sounds fantastic right? Serial killer, Psychologist, the meeting of the minds, the search for answers and truth.

The plot in this book is outstandingly clever, even intelligent readers won't work this one out, it's frustrating because you really strain your brain as you read and come up with conclusions as to what is going on but forget it, you will get it wrong anyway. Taut, tense and terrific plot Mr Kaufman. Absolutely hats off to you.

I hung on to this book like I was on a roller coaster, once you are strapped down you can't get off, you have to see it through to the very end, and just when you think your mind can't take anymore - BOOM! Brain flip yet again. Think of scrambled egg brains by the end of the book.

With an intensity that is intriguing, characters that you will change opinion on (all of them) more than once to say the very least and a dark undertone all the way through this is sheer entertainment, pure reading pleasure but you might have a headache once finished it.

I loved how it surprised me, it was not what I expected at all, it was better, the writing is superb, even though a complex plot and it would be hard to get confused I didn't, the author held me in tight.

You cannot review this book and talk about plot without spoilers by the million which is why I am not.

Get in there, buy the book, borrow it, just read it. For me, one of my stand out reads of 2014/2015 (and I have read over 500 books). If the Author's next book is pumped out at this level I will be happy to rave even more. Five stars, stunning work of clever, twisted fiction. I loved every single word, rave, rant, rave, rant, rant, rant, rave. Hoorah!

Do you dare guess the twist?

Many thanks to the author and publisher for my copy of the book to read and review, much appreciated).

No, not generally. Hey! Wait a minute there, Mitchell. What does that have to do with this review?

Shelby once again will be receiving the blame credit for this one. She even went so far as to use OTHER social media outlets in order to strong-arm me (and the Easy E) into reading Twisted. Now I know what everyone means about her being a big bully. Sheesh.

I have many friends on here who read a lot of books about nuts . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

Whooops, wrong kind of nuts.

I even have a Jeff who constantly begs me to provide him with gifs about some real nutty stuff . . .

(You’re welcome, buddy)

But this book? This book was truly nuts . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, you’re getting a non-review for Twisted because there’s no way I’m spoiling any diddly dang dong thing about it. Here’s what I’m willing to cough up with regard to this story:

As the blurb states, Dr. Christopher Kellan spends his days at Loveland Psychiatric Hospital where he oversees a unit of crazy . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

No, like reeeeeaaaally crazy . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

The kind of crazy that wants to wear you like a skin suit . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

Dr. Kellan’s latest patient is Donny Ray Smith, a young man (and possible serial killer) who has been accused of murdering 10 little girls. It’s Dr. Kellan’s job to determine whether Donny Ray is truly insane, or if he’s using insanity as a final Hail Mary pass to hopefully keep him from taking a seat on Old Sparky. Then things get just a little bit cray . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

That’s all you get, folks. Twisted is one hell of a wild ride. I won’t go so far as to say allllll of the twists and turns are completely unforeseeable, but I am comfortable saying it’s a hard one to put down. Bottom line????

Dallas Commercial Photography

If you are a fan of stories that at times have you guessing what is up and what is down and who is sane and who is crazy, kind of like this . . .

Dallas Commercial Photography

or this . . .

You should find this one to be deliciously Twisted.

I loved this story up until the end. I had a nagging feeling about what the ending would round out to be, but continued reading on anyways. The writing style was lovely, the chapters short, the narrator wonderfully unreliable, and the flashback scenes featuring his parents kept me glued to my seat. Loved the bits about the psychological assessment tests and scales.

Watching the narrator unravel was satisfying and at times chilling. Unfortunately, it was too easy to guess what that final twist in the story would be and it was kind of disappointing for me. Maybe I've read too many books with the same revelation, but I still liked the delivery of this story very much.

► Most laughable lines in the narrator's thoughts?

The dog is speaking to me.
Not with words. Not even with his stare. This is different and far more powerful. No mental impairment, no distortion. This is genuine. It’s primitive, and above all, it’s critically urgent. Like some kind of communication custom-made for me, only I still don’t understand what he wants me to know.

To die, to sleep, To sleep, perchance to dream; Aye, there’s the rub, For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come, When we have shuffled off this mortal coil. – Hamlet, William Shakespeare

description

A fast paced psychological thriller, “Twisted” is an intense story with an intriguing plot that will make you question everything you read. This was my first read by this author and it definitely won’t be my last. First and foremost I have to say the title is perfect for this book. Indeed, everything is twisted. Secondly, this book is labeled wrong IMO as a horror. It is creepy? Yeah...maybe...a little. I don’t know! It was more creepy-intriguing for me and of course like I mentioned a psychological thriller/mystery. There’s no romance here, so don’t expect hearts and flowers.

description

Our main character is Dr. Christopher Kellan who works as a psychologist at Loveland Psychiatric Hospital. He has a loving, devoted wife and a sweet little boy, Devon who means everything for him. Chris is a hardworking man who wants to make a difference and help others. Currently he treats some dangerous patients in the Alpha Twelve Unit.

“The Killers. The rapists. The dark souls with an incurable addiction to evil.”

His newest patient is Donny Ray Smith, a young man who is accused of murdering ten young girls. During their first session, Chris is startled to realize Donny Ray feels familiar. He feels he knows Donny, but he doesn’t remember from where.

description

Donny Ray knows things about Chris, things he couldn’t have learned in Loveland.

At first sight all the evidence tells Donny Ray is guilty, but there’s a problem – he can’t remember killing all these girls.

“…as many times as I’ve turned things around in my head, I can’t make sense of them. And then I keep forgetting things, and everything around me doesn’t fit, and that just makes it worse.”

Chris’s life is about to change with a car accident, accident who change everything for him and his family.

description

Due the fact this is a psychological thriller I don’t recommend reading any reviews that are too spoiler-ish. I must admit what intrigued me the most reading the blurb was the setting – a Psychiatric Hospital. Told from Chris’s POV, the story is fantastically written with a great, compelling plot. I questioned everything I’ve read and I really tried to guess what is really going on. Everything was intense and I have to say at times I was really frustrated because nothing seemed to make sense.

description

Chris’s character is well developed and his inner turmoil is wonderfully done. I really felt for him for what happened with him in the past and as well in the present especially at some point. Needless to say the emotional aspect of the story broke my heart. Like him at times I didn’t know what to think about everything and at times I didn't know what is real.

The big twist in the end was very interesting, but I see it coming. In spite of that I really liked it. While I found it smart I found the ending a little rushed. I just wanted something more.

Overall, a fantastic read!

“Is he going mad, or is that what Donny Ray wants him to think?”

This psychological thriller/horror was wow, it was really good!
I didn't think I'd be so engaged in this read but once the characters and their lives are introduced and settled the action and a jarring "is this all real or a mental thing?" game begins. Very gripping!
Thank you GR friend Devi for the recommendation!

I must say I enjoyed Twisted a lot finally finished it last night & was in from the prologue I felt like my head was in a spin dryer at times as there was so much to take in also as I was reading this I felt that the insane was leading the insane as both Donny & Kellen had a lot in common one was dealing with his fathers illness, while the other Donny was always in his head sending Kellen more & more over the edge.

Loved the ending was a real cat & mouse game between the two I loved the authors style in which he portrayed the characters & his knowledge of Psychiatric hospitals was exceptional.

Many thanks to the author, Andrew E. Kaufman, the publisher, Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley for the ARC of “Twisted”. I will never be the same.

“Twisted” is a psychological thriller that takes the characters/reader on a journey they will never forget. It is so hard to review this book, as I feel I have gone through the wringer and my brain is fried. What I do know is that there is a fine line between sanity and insanity. This author allows you to experience these feelings and emotions, where you will question every action. “Here a tormented man must face his fear and enter the mind of a killer to find the truth…even if it costs him his sanity.”

Loveland Psychiatric Hospital is a jungle, which holds the worst offenders, killers, rapists, all within the unit known as “Alpha Twelve”. Dr. Christopher Kellan, is the psychologist who oversees this unit, and he works hand-in-hand with Dr. Adam, the neurologist that works on the medical side. Christopher’s newest patient, Donny Ray Smith, is accused of murdering ten young girls, and their bodies are missing. It is Christopher’s assignment to assess and evaluate and diagnose this patient, as the case could end up as a death penalty case. But the initial profile of the patient is not that of a serial killer! But a psychopath can change their image on a dime. Christopher is unsure what to make of him. But the patient looks familiar. Those eyes! A former patient?

This novel reads like spreading butter on bread-smooth and enjoyable, but not one that allows us to relax, as the tension and thrill continues to build. This novel will test the limit of your tolerance. Strange things happen, weird things and Christopher starts to exhibit strange behavior, followed by hallucinations, confused thoughts, and hearing voices.

“Is he going mad, or is that what Donny Ray wants him to think?”

I am still in shock after reading this novel, and my mind is spinning out of control. If you want to read an amazing psychological thriller, READ this book. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

4 1/2 Stars - Good, or truly great, but totally brain-shattering. I'm breathless, distressed and in a dizzy sob mood

Recommended by JaHy (5 stars). A psychological thriller — now also as an 8:30 hrs Whispersync for Voice audiobook edition narrated by Phil Gigante in a simple great way (applauses to him).

Creeping scary in a horrid realistic way...
I didn't understand anything anymore those last chapters. Everything was a mess like in and horror movie. My brain was spinning at full speed.

***********************************************************

"A tormented man must face his fear and enter the mind of a killer to find the truth…even if it costs him his sanity"

Dr. Christopher Kellan is a psychologist who had a tough childhood. Many years later is he happily married to Jenna and has a young son, Devon (and a dog called Jake).
 photo image.jpg2_zpsdn8hqols.jpg

Christopher works at Loveland Psychiatric Hospital, overseeing a unit known as Alpha Twelve, home to the most deranged and psychotic killers imaginable. His newest patient, Donny Ray Smith, is accused of murdering ten young girls and making their bodies disappear. But during his first encounter with Donny, Christopher finds something else unsettling: the man looks familiar.

It all starts with a car crash the same day the new patient Donny is moved to the hospital. Then strange things starts to happening and Chris' life becomes more and more absurd. Chris, story alternates between the present and flashbacks to his pretty sad childhood with a very sick father and a weak mother.

***********************************************************

I'm sure I'm not exaggerates if I say that Twisted is a totally freaking weird thriller story. Nevertheless very well done, thought out and in the end a good one for this genre.
‘I exhale my relief. But then I glance toward Jake and my relief fades because there is an empty spot where he once stood.
I scan my surroundings and find him several feet away, staring at the tree again.
Backing away from it.
Ears lowered and pinned back, tail tucked between his legs.
Like he smells fear.’

.. photo 0dda07ac-1597-49ab-89a0-120b56d9e843_zpsdjsiahni.jpg

Everything become after a while even more messy, incomprehensible strange and terrible heartbreaking. In the end could I hardly breathe. I was almost grateful when it was over.

***********************************************************

As so many other books should this one preferably be read (or audiobook listened to) with as little topic and storyline information as possible. Therefore I say no more than:

This was GOOD but terrible crawling creepy and it's enough with a visit once a year to this psychological thriller genre for this nail biting girl. ~ To be honest; I probably need some time to process it all and maybe I will make some additions and/or changes here later. I'm still shocked, my mind is in a big spinning turmoil.

~ Back to sweeeet lovely romances. I need some fluffy pink world to be in at once. A nice damsels in distress HR maybe? ~

I LIKE - but never ever again

I think this may have just bumped its way up to the top of my favourite psychological thrillers list.

I’m not going to give away any of the plot, as that would spoil your experience. My advice is to read the main book description to see if it is something you fancy, and avoid reviews that give away details of the plot. You are best going into this with as little knowledge as possible.

Everyone should read this …if they think they are sane enough to handle it!

What I will say is that Twisted is the perfect title for this novel. It is very cleverly written and fast paced. The rest of my review describes how it made me feel, and I’d love to know how it made you feel too, so please feel free to post comments.

I was slow getting into Twisted; due to a busy week and not managing to keep my eyes open long enough at night. However, by the time I reached about half way, nothing was stopping me read this, so I read the second half much quicker. What just happened to me over the last 24 hours? I’ve been left feeling like a deer in headlights!

I feel like I've been through the washing machine with this one. A poor unsuspecting t-shirt, thrown in the washing machine, spun around and half drowned, only to be hung out and blown all over the place on a washing line. Then placed on someone and made to swim, cycle and run a triathlon, quite possibly in the wrong direction. Then the whole cycle begins again. That poor t-shirt, ha ha :-)

At one stage I actually started getting suspicious of the book, wondering if it was possible for the written word to actually change a reader’s mental state permanently. It was as if the author had some secret way of infiltrating my brain with their book.

I feel shell-shocked, emotionally and mentally drained, as if my brain has turned into to mashed potato. I’m on the verge of wanting to cry, real hysterical tears, due to the mental trauma this book has put me through, and perhaps the relief that it’s all over. I don’t know, I feel fuzzy, disorientated and confused.

I think I need a hug. Someone hug me, please!

I would like to thank the publisher, Thomas & Mercer for allowing me a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I will definitely be keeping a close eye on future books by Andrew E. Kaufman.

This made it into my Top Ten Books read in 2015:

I'm writing this at 80% done. I hadn't read too far into this book before all kinds of warning bells were going off in my head. Now wait a minute. What the hell? I don't know what's happening, who to believe, or what's really real. The final 20% better be worth all this confusion!

I'm done and that was totally unexpected!! Very clever "reveal" and very poignant ending. Bravo, Mr. Kaufman!

If you love psychological thrillers, you need to read this book. I highly recommend it. I'm off to find more by this author.

Are you crazy?
"Well, yeah, obviously."

Twisted was a fast paced and intriguing story. This is the type of book you will not want to put down because you need to find answers.

When Dr. Christopher Kellan is chosen to evaluate the new arrival at Loveland Psychiatic Facility, he had no idea his whole world will change.

Patient Donny Ray Smith is accused of killing a young girl, and is suspected to have at least nine other victims. Problem is, there are no bodies. With only DNA evidence, Donny's lawyers would like to plead insanity. That's were Dr. Kellan comes in. He needs to use his psychology expertise to decide if this plea holds a case.

The patient held in Alpha Twelve is an enigma, but Christopher is determined to get to the bottom of his diagnosis.

Right after meeting this strange patient, Christopher gets into a car accident. Now, he is starting to see things. He is starting to lose time. A lot of things he notices around him cannot be explained.

So who's crazy now?
 photo imagejpg3_zpsdfa8f0b7.jpg

As a reader who usually only reads romance, this was a great change of pace for me. I always love the mindfuck read, and I found this to be quite an enjoyable page-turner.

Maybe it's the fact that I was alone while I read this or that it was storming too, but when strange things started happening to Christopher, I had major goosebumps. I was really starting to get creeped the fuck out.

You cannot help but try to figure out what's going on. You start feeling like you're the crazy one with all of the events that are happening. What's real and what's a delusion?

I hate to be vague, but this was a book you have to experience for yourself.

I was captivated immediately, and loved all of the twists and turns of it all.

Since Christopher has psychology as his profession, it's very interesting to get his thoughts about things that were taking place. He understands that his mental capacity is slipping, but at the same time, is not convinced and believes some of the things to be true. He also takes us into his past, where we find out what his childhood and parents were like.

Even though we get the answers we need, my brain still had questions about the things left unsaid. I needed more of a conclusion, but I was still happy with the ending. Besides the mindfuck aspect, there was still an underlying sadness to the story, which gave it more heart than I would have originally anticipated.

Overall, I think this was what I needed. An awesome psychological thriller that kept me on my toes the entire time.

Another awesome mindfuck BR, Michelle!!! Until the next one....xoxo

4 The Sleep Of Death Stars!

This book right here exhausted me!! My mind is a jumbled mess. I feel like I've been on a roller coaster that just never stopped. Twisting and turning and plunging me forward and backwards. OMG! What a fucking ride this book was! I loved it!!

My mind is flip-flopping like a skillet pancake in a greasy-spoon diner.

Dr. Christopher Kellan spends his days at Loveland Psychiatric Hospital, overseeing a unit known as Alpha Twelve, home to the most deranged and psychotic killers imaginable.

Yes! We meet them and hell yes they were creepy as hell! I wanted out of there. lol

Be very careful.

Dr. Kellan's newest patient, Donny Ray Smith, is accused of murdering ten young girls and making their bodies disappear. But during his first encounter with Donny, Christopher finds something else unsettling: the man looks familiar.

“We have to stop for now,” I say, giving Evan a nod. “We’ll continue this in a—” “Okay,” Donny Ray interrupts softly, then with a polite smile says, “Have a safe night, Christopher.”

After that first meeting I sent out a text asking my friend if she read any reviews on GRs that Donny Ray was the devil. He gave me goosebumps!!

Donny Ray knows things about Christopher—things he couldn’t have possibly learned at Loveland.

This had my mind spinning! I kept thinking wtf? Did I miss something? I need to go back and read that last part. Did the other Drs call Dr Kellan Christopher? How does Donny Ray know that? How the hell does Donny Ray know so much?

As the psychologist delves deeper into the mysterious patient’s case, Christopher’s life whirls out of control. The contours of his mind are rapidly losing shape, and his grasp on reality is slipping even faster. Is he going mad, or is that what Donny Ray wants him to think?

I wasn't sure about the good Dr going mad. But damn sure knew I was going mad!! I couldn't read fast enough! I needed answers.

I can't say much about Twisted. Just know that it's title is correct! This book was twisted! I refuse to accidentally spoil anything. Twisted is a book that will have your mind spinning. You will be on the edge of your seat trying to figure out what is going on. Your mouth will dropping to the floor numerous times. Andrew Kaufman did an excellent job at truly fucking with me!

“It’s about the truth. It’s about knowing that somewhere in your mind the truth is hiding out, and you can’t find it, because there are all these reflections, and they’re blinding you. We helped each other find the truth.”

If you love roller coaster rides then you need to go and purchase Twisted. This is not a romance. I'm so very happy I stepped outside of my box and took a chance on this book. It was awesome!!

I buddy read this with Kirsten and you should grab a buddy or two and dive in! You will not be disappointed:))

Why not a 5 star you say? You know why people! I wanted more at the end!

My Thoughts - Story
OK…I don’t even know where to start this review because this book fucking blew me away! After coming down from reading Mama Cried, Jahy contacted me and dared me to read a book that she picked out…I was up for a dare and the only thing left was to wait for my NetGalley request get approved. I know the books Jahy picks up are normally really fucked up but this was the last thing I was expecting.

If you know anything about me, you know that there are very few books out there that I can’t guess the ending and the twist to the book…well, yeah, you guessed it. I couldn’t figure this book out for shit. I kept coming up with these off the wall scenarios that would have turned this book into a sci-fi or horror or even fantasy but NOPE! By the time I got to the ending, I felt like I should have tried to kick myself in the ass.

Gripping isn’t a word to sum up this book – Fantastic is another one that won’t do this justice…Honestly I don’t think one simple word can come close – now, if there was a word like “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” that could pertain to thrillers…then YUP…that would be the word!

This is one of those books where when you pick it up and get through the beginning building up the story, you can’t put it down – you just need to know what Chris is going to come up with next. What Donny Ray is going to do to fuck with Chris and what kind of antics Devon will get in.

This is definitely a book I would recommend to EVERYONE who loves to get blown away by a twist so hard to figure out….

And I’ll dare you…read the book and if you can figure out the twist – message me with your guess and if you are right….I’ll gift you a $0.99 book of your choice!  (No cheating)

Re-Cap
Chris is on a new assignment – he must figure out if the child killer, Donny Ray, is insane. Follow Chris through breaking down Donny Ray and how Chris’ life breaks down as he gets closer and closer to the truth.

Things really aren’t as they seem anymore and Chris starts to worry that he will follow in his father’s footsteps of adult onset schizophrenia. Is he danger to himself? Is he having hallucinations? When will the breaking point be before Chris realizes not everything is as it seems?

Christopher is a psychiatrist working at a psychiatric hospital with the most deranged serial killers you could imagine. When a new patient arrives at the hospital, Christopher is asked to make a diagnosis on whether he thinks the patient is lying about not remembering the crimes he committed, or whether he has a genuine psychiatric condition that prevents him from remembering them. When he initially meets the patient, the patient looks familiar, but he can pinpoint why. The more time he spends with the patient, the more he is put on edge. His patient, Donny, seems to know more about him than he should, but Christopher doesn’t know why.

As odd things start happening around him, Christopher questions whether he himself is going insane the same way his schizophrenic father did…is he losing his mind, or is that just what Donny wants him to think? In order to catch a serial killer, Christopher may end up losing his grip on reality.

Twisted is by far the most trippy book I’ve ever read. I felt like I was going crazy when I was reading it. I can tell the author put a lot of time and effort into his research into schizophrenia, because throughout the book, I couldn’t grasp on to anything solid. My thoughts were all over the place, and I think it was this amazing experience where the book made me feel as confused and panicked as Christopher must have felt, and I’ve never felt that way reading a book before.

I did guess the twist from very early on, but it was executed flawlessly, and I loved the ride getting there, and really enjoyed seeing how all of the pieces of the puzzle fit together in the end. Donny was such a creepy character, that I felt tense reading parts of the book with him in it. I imagine working with real life serial killers would feel the same way.

Overall, this book was dark, twisty, and will make you question everything as you’re reading it. You’ll be confused and lost, and that’s exactly what Andrew E. Kaufman wants you to feel. Fans of books or movies like Inception, The Nightwalker, or Shutter Island will eat this book up! This was the first book I read by Kaufman, but it will not be my last. This was a smart, taught thriller, and I can’t wait to read more by this author! If you’re ready for a wild ride of a psychological thriller, be sure to pick this one up!

I would like to thank Net Galley for giving me a copy of this novel in exchange for a honest review. This book is not typical of my reading genre but I was hooked very early into the book and ended up reading deep into the night to complete it. An exciting and well written psychological thriller from Andrew E. Kaufman that is well worth reading and is full of action and twists and turns. After finishing reading this novel I was instantly researching his other works so that I could read more. An excellent well worked novel that is well worth reading.

4 Mind Crazy Stars

To die, to sleep, To sleep, perchance to dream; Aye, there’s the rub, For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come, When we have shuffled off this mortal coil

When Dr.Christopher Kellan goes to meet his new arrival..
a patient in the Loveland Psychiatric Hospital to assess his mental state.
 photo MattSmith_zpswysr3onn.gif

I was expecting a monster; instead, this guy looks like he was sent here by Central Casting rather than by another psychiatric hospital. It would appear he wandered onto the wrong
set, though, because our new patient in no way fits the role of a serial killer.
Donny Ray Smith could have leaped from the page of an Abercrombie ad. A child killer? He’s nothing more than a kid himself.

As he watches the man, he seems familiar but can't think why..

As a storm is brewing outside he makes his way home to his family to his beautiful wife Jenna and six year old son Devon.
Swerving to miss a lad playing with his ball he crashes his car into a tree and thats when everything in his perfect life starts to change....

So to my thoughts

This was a clever psychological thriller, I read it in one sitting so it kept my attention till the end.
You know that Christopher is losing all reality but you don't know till the end just how much is real and how much is in his head...

Oh what a mind blower.

Just the title "Twisted" should tell you something, then look at the book cover.
This is a high rated book and I can certainly see why.
My mind was sometimes in a confuddled state and fuses blown.

Awesome.

Loveland Psychiatric Hospital is where Dr. Christopher Kellan works. Mostly on a unit called Alpha Twelve where the patients will never see the light of day in freedom again.
Very secure.

Danny Ray Smith arrives in that unit and Christopher has to do his evaluation. Danny ray has been accused of killing ten girls. The extraordinary thing is though their bodies have disappeared.

There is something familiar about Danny Ray that Christopher cannot put his hands on. It bothers him a great deal.

Danny Ray seems to know things about Christopher. How did he know that information? Have they met before?

Strange things start to happen to Christopher. Is Christopher loosing his mind.

This really is a hard hitting fast paced twisted read that keeps your mind in overdrive.

I loved every minute of the read.

Phenomenal. Just fantastic. Seems like I have read a few books dealing with mental health of late but having dealt with it in our family does this one nail the issue on the head. I recently purchased a real life biography of a person who was a NHL player who ended up homeless and mentally ill as well and that will be read shortly too. Is it me or are there just too too many of late? It’s truly a saddening issue for everyone including family members.

This was my first read by Andrew Kaufman and as soon as I finished it I ordered The Lion, The lamb and The Hunted. This book is so appropriately titled. It had me Twisted in so many ways. I never knew what was coming. I don’t think I’ve ever had more notes than I did with this book. In his acknowledgements Kaufman wrote about how hard it was to write this book. That to write about someone going mentally ill and make it work was extremely frustrating. If anyone has dealt with mental illness it is extremely frustrating. You try and reach out, try to communicate and of course you do so in a rational way yet the person you are reaching out to is not rational, they may be seeing devils, they may think you are a devil or their enemy. I have dealt with all kinds of calls as a police officer but I don’t think there was any more frustrating type of call than dealing with a mentally ill person, especially if that person was scared. It is truly a disease and can rip apart families because sometimes what the mentally ill person says to family, the way they treat family, it just becomes too much. Many of our homeless are mentally ill and many people wonder how they can be left alone to fend for themselves when they clearly lack the mental capacity to do so – where are theIr families? Again I am sure most families tried and tried and finally just gave up on them. It is so sad and yet all so true. To just walk away from a sick loved one and with this disease it happens and happens to often.

So Kaufman knew what he was up against in portraying someone who was losing it. Someone who was facing adult set schizophrenia. Again what a phenomenal job as I dealT with just that in our family. To care for our loved one we brought him home. We tried to help. Yet my father was often his target and my father slept at night with one eye open and his bedroom door locked. My father was so afraid, so scared of him and yet loved him so much, what a way to live. I dealt with the ever constant derailments when we would have to intervene and get him to a psyche ward. Decades of care and intervention resulted in very little positive results.

This coming spring of 2024 the Canadian government is introducing legislation that will allow for the mentally ill to choose assisted suicide. I really have issues with this in that how do you allow someone who has no mental capacity to make that decision? Like for the Medically ill 3 psychiatrists have to sign off and confirm that person is in their right mind to decide. And for the medically ill there are no mental health issues, just medical. How many psychiatrists will have to sign off on a mentally ill candidate? Also if this becomes law and mainstream then expect that mentally ill person to possibly discuss it with you. It happened to me and honestly I don’t know who I was really looking out for, there true well being or my own selfish needs and having had enough of the constant turmoil and bs this person was causing us all.

Why did I make this review so personal. I think my review speaks for itself. Clearly this topic is personal to me. And the way this book is written is just Phenomenal. If you are interested in learning a thing or two about mental health and at the same time want to enjoy a true psychological thriller I cannot give enough praise to this book. Hell even if you didn’t give a crap at all about mental health issues this book is still a great read on its own as a psychological thriller with just so many twists and turns that often lead you to question just what the hell is happening. And in the end it so nicely comes together. An easy five stars with a great 5 star acknowledgement by the author. Looking so forward to more of his writing. PHENOMENAL PHENOMENAL READ!!

**I received this arc from netgalley, this is my honest opinion of the book. **

One of my favorite books read so far this year.

Dr. Christopher is a psychiatrist working at Loveland Psychiatric Hospital ........

Home to the worst of the worst.
The killers.
The rapists.
The dark souls with an incurable addiction to evil.

After meeting a new client, a serial killer of children, Dr. Christopher slowly begins a descent into madness and paranoia that frightens his family and friends.

The book begins with a wonderfully creepy vibe but near the end takes an emotional turn that really suprised me.

I received this book through Netgalley and Amazon Publishing for an honest review. Thank you.

This book absolutely blew me away! It is psychologically twisted! No pun intended! For some strange reason I didn't think I would like this book very much. I was quite surprised at how much I loved it.

There is so much crazy stuff going on I'm not sure how to even write a review without giving any good stuff away. I will try my best.

Chris is a psychologist that gets called in to check the mental status of a man who killed these little girls. He thinks it may be something from the killers childhood that caused him to be this way. He goes through a lot of weird stuff with this man, Donny Day Smith.

One evening on his way home, Chris slides off the road to keep from hitting a boy who ran out into the road to get his ball. He passes out for a little bit but refuses to go to the hospital. His wife and friends try to get him to go but he doesn't.

He starts to see weird things after this so he decides he will go in for an MRI scan, that maybe something did happen in the accident. His worse fear is that he has inherited schizophrenia like his father.

All I'm going to say now is this story gets so crazy with Chris seeing things, trying to act normal around his wife and son, his dog acting crazy, his best friend Adam acting crazy. People are going missing, he has a voice in his head telling him stuff.

Closer to the end I was wondering if the story was leading where it did and I was right, but let me tell you it's a wonderful story. Makes you feel like you want to get frantic with Chris, running all around trying to get if figured out. I now have what I have heard others call a book hangover. I thought I would finish it tomorrow but could not put it down until I found out what happened.

I recommend to all thriller fans!

This is my 2nd book by Andrew E. Kaufman and after reading his most recent book and loving it with 5 stars “What She Doesn’t Know”, I had to buy this one from Amazon for $1.99. Holy cow! This book was gripping and intense throughout!! Sometimes at night if I can’t sleep, I read, well, this book was too scary to read at night. So it took me longer to read, that’s for sure. So much went into this book about psychiatric hospitals and the horrible disease of schizophrenia that it blew my mind as I was taking it all in. And that ending – I DID NO SEE COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW. This author is just amazing. I will be looking for more books by him for sure!!

By far one of the best books I have read this year, Twisted is a gripping and utterly addictive tale that will absolutely mess with your head. If you think back to being a youngster when you played that silly game of spinning yourself around faster and faster then attempting to walk – thats about the feeling you will have after finishing this novel. And probably quite a few times during the reading of it.

So I can’t say too much about the plot – and I recommend you do not read any in depth reviews of this story before diving in – but basically we follow along with Dr Christopher Kellan as he tries to disentangle the enigma that is Donny Ray Smith, a new patient on his Psychiatric ward. Dr Kellan is under some pressure to diagnose, but the further he delves into Donny’s story the more things get a bit, well, crazy.

This is a pure rollercoaster ride, all the way start to finish. Highly disturbing in parts, turning you first one way then the other and as soon as you think you’ve got a handle on things, nope – you are turning another corner, finding another mystery, feeling a bit bemused and definitely bedraggled. Sheer brilliance really, because it is not as if it is a messy convoluted plot. Yes I know that sounds contradictory but you’ll see exactly what I mean.

Perfectly constructed, elegantly written in a way that simply does not allow you room to manoevre, you are just caught up in the tale and pulled ever further into the whirlpool of Dr Kellan’s world and that of those around him – really terrific characterisation just puts a cherry right on top of the cake.

Of course with a book this good you worry on the journey that the ending might not live up to the promise, not so here – from first page to last this is storytelling genius, intelligent, emotive and utterly compelling, oh what a tangled web this author has woven around the reader – excellent excellent stuff.

Highly Recommended.

Happy Reading Folks!

Hmmmm. Interesting. I pretty much had this one figured by the 25% point and couldn't stop thinking of **Major Spoiler Alert! - will ruin the whole f*cking thing for you if you haven't already read it**

So how then could I even still really like it? Good question. The writing was excellent for a first person pov and the audio narration was very well done. There was a definite palpable darkness and growing sense of dread as Chris descent into madness progressed. Very well done. 4 Stars!

☆☆☆☆☆ 5 Layers of a Fragile Mind Stars ☆☆☆☆☆

 photo PicsArt_12-26-02.45.24_zpsyvrla0fc.jpg

Christopher Kellan, a husband, father, son, psychiatrist....a handsome man with everything going for him. Beautiful wife, amazing little boy, successful doctor in a mental hospital.

"Each day I move between two different worlds, one occupied by sanity and order, the other completely devoid of either.

Everything you begin to read may or may not be real. The layers this story peals back is beyond explanation.

As Christopher is handed the case of a lifetime, his already fragile mind that he works so hard to remain glued together in a normal life begins to fracture.

This case will cause a tragic chain of events leading Christopher on a journey for the fight of his life and mind.

 photo tumblr_nklshwKvSZ1u8hb0vo1_500_zpskawpxy0u.gif

When he thinks he has the answers and a diagnosis for his case, his life and psyche are unwound into a depth of darkness that his loved ones are beyond the hands of help he needs.

 photo PicsArt_12-26-02.58.06_zpsx73rvagf.jpg

The closer the case comes to an end the closer Christopher comes to a shattered mind. A mind that is protecting Christopher from a tragedy he can't handle.

YOU WILL NOT SEE THIS ENDING COMING!!!

"“It’s about the truth. It’s about knowing that somewhere in your mind the truth is hiding out, and you can’t find it, because there are all these reflections, and they’re blinding you."

Not only does this story twist your mind, but it touches your heart understanding how a broken mind effects the ones you love. The ones that never leave you.
