Being a Sophisticate of the Program seems like it’d be a pretty sweet deal: a little genetic alteration and anyone can be smarter, faster, and stronger. It’s a dream come true. All you have to give up is your freedom.

Cleo is a Sophisticate and she has a bright future in the Program. But she has a secret. When she gets upset, bad things happen. Explosive things. Things she can’t control.

When her secret is discovered, she’s sent to the Academy to train in the military branch of the Program. She’s destined to be a human weapon in the war that’s been going on since Wormwood occurred nearly 30 years ago. She soon learns that although her ability is unique, there are others like her — other Sophisticates with lethal skills and odd code names like Archerfish and Mimic Octopus.

Immersed in a dangerous game of supernatural powers and dubious motives, Cleo doesn’t know who to trust. Ozzy, the annoyingly attractive cadet who has perfect aim in weapons class and deviant lips behind closed doors, begs her not to use her powers. He’s the golden boy of the Program, but can she trust him? Or will she find herself a target, caught in his crosshairs?

The first thing Christine does when she's getting ready to read a book is to crack the spine in at least five places. She wholeheartedly believes there is no place as comfy as the pages of a well-worn book. She's addicted to buying books, reading books, and writing books. She even turned her dining room into a library—reading is more important than eating. She also has a weakness for adventure and inappropriate humor. Christine is from Forest Hill, Maryland where she lives with her husband, three kids, and her library of ugly spine books.

So "Deviation" is the first book in the Sophisticates series: A first for me with this particular author and also one that pleasantly surprised me in as such that it really managed to capture and retain my attention throughout.
This is a YA novel, but don't let that put you off as this has so much to offer any age reader and I am seriously glad I gave this a go myself.
So the concept behind this novel was ever so intriguing a program of superhuman genetically engineered children called Sophisticates.
These special individuals are raised and housed by the government and their future use is for the purpose of national security and a deterrent to terrorism and global threats.
They are essentially the property of the government and as such there freedoms and life is limited.
This first book follows Cleo: a sophisticate with a little something extra.
After Cleo starts exhibiting strange abilities she is shipped out of her academic university and into the military designation of sophisticates to retrain.
As she settles down into her new role Cleo has to get to grips with a completely new hierarchy.
Mean girls, new relationships and also Ozzy who seems to wants to be more than just friends.
So this was a great read that I really did enjoy.
I also really liked the fact that this didn't take itself to seriously: that although we were dealing with some major issues here that essentially at its heart the individuals portrayed here were still teenagers with all the usual teenage angst and normal mundane issues this generation seem to experience.
You know what I mean boys, popularity whose taking who to the dance.
But also if you read between the lines this also had a more sinister message to impart one that essentially is telling the story of an almost slave-like existence where all life decisions are being made by someone higher up on the chain.
When you dissect the bones here it's almost chilling these adolescents even have trackers implanted to show their actual location at all times.
So I have been reading a few examples from this particular genre lately and got to say this has been my favourite for a while: I will even be continuing on here as I really want to know what's next in store for Cleo, Ozzy and the rest of the gang.
So If you're looking for a good YA read then I am happy to recommend this one to you: it really managed to capture my imagination an excellent solid read.
Thank you to the Author and NetGalley for providing me with a review copy of "Deviation" (The Sophisticates, #1) of which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review

My review can also be found here: https://devouringbooks2017.wordpress....

A thrilling dystopian tale with a touch of science. Deviation is set in the future after terrorists have brutally attacked our country. The United States responds by creating the Sophisticates, an elite group who are bred to be genetically superior. When Cleo accidentally blows up her room when she gets too upset, she gets sent to an academy which is basically for soldiers. Once she arrives she quickly realizes that she is not the only one who is different.

Christine Manzari filled this book with some excellent world building and there was great background information that answered most of my questions. The whole possibility of this world felt very real, I think this book is a lot more plausible than The Hunger Games or Divergent. There was some scientific background and obviously some research was done in order to create the characters who were genetically altered.

This book had the potential to go somewhere as great as The Hunger Games or Divergent, yet the author didn't go as far with it as she could of. I loved the idea and the characters, yet I don't find myself blown away. I wanted a bigger climax and was a little disappointed. The world that Christine Manzari created was so fantastic that I have to hope that she writes a sequel. I really liked this book, yet I was not blown away.

I am such a sucker for Dystopian stories. Especially the YA ones where the characters are young enough to be foolishly brave, unreservedly creative, and smart enough to succeed.

This is a good one. Great writing. Solid world building that develops naturally with the unfolding of the plot. No information dumps to stall over. Mind blowing reveals.

Only reason this doesn't have five stars is because it ended on a cliffhanger.

Deviant is easily as good as any of the other, big hit, YA Dystopian books.

4.5 out of 5 stars!

A friend recommended me DEVIATION, so I bought a copy and read it. It's actually a very interesting story with genetic alteration craziness and all that! What grabbed me wasn't the science, though, but the characters--it's the thing I love the most in novels.

The story follows Cleo, a kick-ass "Sophisticate," with an explosive personality, explosive as in don't-upset-her-or-she'll-blow-your-head-out. Oops? Actually, she's cool most of the time. It's only when she's super-pissed that she struggles to control herself. I was cheering for her, but at the same time, I was afraid she'd get too upset and boom!

I also loved that this novel has some high stakes in skates--I can't tell you much about them because of spoilers of the third kind.

I don't know why I previously thought this book wasn't interesting the first time I tried it. However, I decided to give it another try and at first I liked it a lot. The writing dragged a bit at times but I was interested in the story-line so I kept reading. The concept of Sophisticates and the dystopian style to the story intrigued me. I liked the characters and how they were introduced. Ozzy was my favorite. The plot twists kept me engaged and entertained.

However, some of the scenes felt unnecessary and didn't add value to the main plot. The story concentrated too much on the friendships and interactions, making it seem high school in nature rather than dystopian. The story didn't have the severity and seriousness needed for the plot. Halfway through, the writing was tiresome and emphasized too much length on the relationships rather than the plot twists.

That said, this story had a lot of potential and could have been better.

Consider: This review may have some spoilers. SO suck it up.
NOTE: this is a big book. Or at least bigger than the regular norm these days. So if you want to read a book that gets straight into the action, then this is not the book for you.

NOW, if you appreciate the art of writing and world and character building, and can analyze the story, THEN you will love this book.

Let's talk about the cover first. It is GORGEOUS! I think it would be in league with Badass covers like Firelight, Divergent, Dustlands, and many more. But to the untrained eye, you would think of it as JUST a cover, but it is not. ;) Let's just say, it is a HUGE hint of what is to come in the book. Let's look at the evidence, Two different colored orbs. And two silhouettes of the same girl. The two different colored orbs represent two forces of identical appearance, but different energy. ANd the two silhouettes are self explanatory.

Now, once you've finished reading the whole book, look at the cover again and tell me you had that OHHHH!!!!!! moment. That is a very clever idea for a cover. Not only does it look badass, but there is a hint hidden within the gorgeous design.

Let's get to the book now.
THe beginning, I'll admit it. It was slow. But as an author as well, i know that I can't expect action to start off the bat if you're developing a huge universe of your own making. You want to get the details right. ANd she did not disappoint.

What kept me interested was the way she wrote from Cleo's point of view. Her thoughts and her actions and little nervous habits. I saw the world through her eyes, which just seemed like school, even though us as the reader, know it is far from that. For example, she has taken martial arts class and she looks at it as not a big deal. It would be completely taboo for us. But Christine sticks to the character's personality like a pro.

Cleo. SO what we know from the blurb is that she is smarter, faster, and stronger than the average human. As the story progresses, you get a feel about her character. Sure, she's smart because she's a sophisticate, but the fact is, she's clever. Clever, headstrong, and stubbornly independent (which is why she fights to not fall for the 'Golden Boy of St. Ignatius' She is hesitant to use her dangerous powers for fear of hurting herself and others. But she has no problem using her fists. But she also has some issues with trust as you will see with the relationship between Cleo and Ozzy.

Ozzy. He has a mysterious past filled with hardship and alot of experiences. Like I mentioned above, he is the "Golden Boy" and the popular guy in school.

Once the action started (I won't spoil it) It was impossible to put down.

The relationship was steamy and amazing. I am a sucker for romance. And the romance between Ozzy and Cleo was well done. I could literally feel thei lust and desire through the screen. It had that "wow" factor that takes romance to the next level. BUT they never go too far, which was frustrating because all that buildup and then what? SOmething happens and they are forced to stop. She did not give in easily to Ozzy, and they had to grow on each other. And it had it's fair share of drama. But trust, is something that can easily be broken

Now the Epilogue added a juicy ending. It didn't end with a cliffhanger since it doesn't leave things unanswered so much as pose more questions. I got chiils, because with the last sentence, I can just picture how Book 2 will be. And I hurts because I know it will threaten, if not, break everything in the story like and her relationship with her friends and possibly put them in danger.

Now the mechanics. Formatting, grammar, spelling. It was nearly flawless. I say nearly because I only found ONE error. JUST ONE!!! WHAT?! With other self published authors, I find a large amount of errors. But since authors tend to read what they mean, rather than what they wrote, it's understandable. What is absolutely amazing is that Christine, being a self-published author, left her book near perfection. That's just amazing and I salute her for that.

Overall, I liked the storyline. The character building and the descriptive writing. This book is similar to Dan Krokos's False Memory except without the complexity of the multi-verse theory.

Congratulations Christine, you've written yourself a damn good book.
FIVE STARS!

When Clementine Dracone accidentally incinerates her room in a fit of anger, she is shipped from the Vanguard Academy to the Mandate Academy within the Sophisticate program. Sophisticates are genetically altered at birth to be smarter, faster and better than the normal human. Within this program, they're divided into two sects: the Vanguards and the Mandates. The Vanguards are the intellectuals and this is where Cleo was learning languages and computer programming. The Mandates are the militaristic branch of Sophiscates. Their training revolves around weapons, fitness and strategy.

Cleo knows she doesn't belong with the other Mandates. However, this strange new ability that she has makes her different from almost all the other Sophisticates. Upon her arrival at the Mandate Academy, she makes quick friends with Arabella and Sterling, and a nemesis out of Quinnie. Cleo slowly becomes acquainted with the way Mandate academy works. While she doesn't succeed in my aspects of the training, she finds a place for herself in roller derby with Arabella and working in the library as part of her work detail.

Every time I'd pick up the story, I was immediately sucked into it. I didn't want to put the book down! I loved seeing Cleo learn more about the Mandate school and grow close to Arabella and Sterling. Arabella was definitely my second favorite. I loved her fiercely vicious attitude and her ever changing hair colors. The rivalry between Cleo and Quinnie was pretty stupid though and probably my only real annoyance. Quinnie was the stereotypical mean popular girl and it was cliche, even if it did add some tension.

Ozzy was an interesting piece of the puzzle. I never knew if Cleo could fully trust him. I liked their relationship, even if it was convoluted at times. My favorite part of the story was seeing Cleo come to the realization about her powers, how she has them and why she has them. The ending was really intense as well and I think there's going to be a whole new slew of problems in book 2 which I'm looking forward to reading!

I would like to thank the group” We ♥ YA Books!” And the author Christine Manzari for allowing me to read this book for an honest review.

Oh my sweet bearded Lincoln socks! This book is awesome, seriously awesome, like the “Darkest Minds” meets “Dark Angel”, I was not sure at the beginning of the story but then it just captivated me, it kept me interested, excited, and just completely fascinated into the story of Cleo, or Clementine, like the orange… hahaha

 photo thatsawesome.jpg
 photo images69.jpg

There was a lot of sarcastic and smart mouth commentaries from the characters they were really funny thought especially the interaction between Sterling and Cleo and then Sterling and Arabella, then Ozzy showed up, I wouldn’t mind some bokken private classes from him…. Hahahaha…
 photo images68.jpg
 photo images54.jpg
 photo images55.jpg

Cassie and the Homework Harpies were in the story as part of memory flashbacks, more of Cassie; Cleo really cares for her, and I cannot wait to read the second book to read more about her. Cleo isn’t the perfect fit for St. Ignatius, she immediately clashed with Quinnie in an electrifying way, very shocking confrontation. Sterling and Arabella are to Cleo like family to her and she truly cares for them.
Cleo is very astute, smart, and overprotective, also righteous but she lets her feelings cloud rightness. Ozzy is like “Four”, the hero that can’t save himself, his background story is truly moving. I really like those two together, and cannot wait to know more about their love story..
What I am dying to know is about Wesley and Cassie, what was that, and are Sterling and Arabella together, together??? And will Theo ever get Quinnie’s ravenous rage after the Autumn formal video gig?....
This story was very exhilarating and truly captivating, I cannot wait for the next, thank you, thank you!!
Oh my! that cliffhanger, scratch that…. Oh my! even better than that those last chapters and the ending!!!

First I want to thank the author, Christine Manzari and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway program for the opportunity to win this book. I enjoyed it and one of my high school children loved the book. Deviation is about a young girl in a training program in a futuristic world, where she discovers she has super powers. As she goes through training, she becomes trained as a human weapon and doesn't know who she can trust. It is an exciting novel that kept me wondering what would happen next and I recommend it to fans of fantasy world novels.

I got my copy of Deviation through a review opportunity that Xpresso Book Tours brought to my attention and even though I've been in a little bit of a reading rut - yes still - I decided to try my luck with this book as the synopsis grabbed my attention and I'm super glad I was approved.

Deviation starts off introducing us to Cleo and her dystopian American world where kids likes her are made by the government as part of the Sophisticate programme to be well trained in various areas to take on the terrorists.

Cleo's area of knowledge is mostly in computers and hacking, which only gets her into trouble as she tries to track down who her parents.

This causes the strangest of reactions from her, her room becomes engulfed in fire.

Unsure as to why this happened and unwilling to admit she could've possibly done this she tries to ignore it but as her next day in class only leaves her to be transferred to school for mandates that are training as part of the military branch, she realises things are only going to get more complicated.

Especially for someone who faints when holding a gun and has already gotten more than enough attention from the prickly head bitch at the school - Quinby.

What I liked about this book is how real Cleo's struggle was with adapting to a new school but also with all the secrets she starts finding out. Her judgement and reactions are believable and I really liked her growth throughout the book.

"The future wasn't something I could control; I knew that. I just had to control how I handled it."

Another bit that hooked me was the roller derby she has to compete in, I've only read one other book with roller derby and it was so great to read about it more. I loved how it fit into the story and provided a ground for Cleo and Quinby to thrash it out on.

The one downside I had with this book is Ozzy. Ozzy is supposed to he be the hero, the book boyfriend we're gushing over with Cleo, but I just couldn't find it in me to like him. At first I couldn't really place it and I thought he would grow on me more, he was pretty mysterious and seemed to know a lot about Cleo which I had assumed was more his deviation that anything but as it comes to light he was a little too creepy.

Years of stalking, being an assassin and telling me you know everything about me whilst wanting to have kissed me for the last two years when I've only known you for two weeks is not going to make my panties drop.

I decided to try and ignore how uncomfortable Ozzy made me feel as Cleo is clearly attracted too him and i you choose to believe everything he says, he is really only looking out for her and the others. I moved on and enjoyed the book.

That was until Ozzy decided to go all straight white boy texting on her and flaunt about in a fedora.

Yes he may be well built, good with weapons and good looking but a fedora is a fedora.

The following quote happens shortly after Cleo turns down him and the dress he's bought her to wear to the dance:

"Ozzy: I was hoping to have dreams about you wearing it.
Me: Well, you'll just have to dream about me without it.
Okay I realised my mistake too late.
Me: That's not what I meant and you know it.
Ozzy: Too late. Good night, Cleo. Sweet dreams I know mine will be."

The reason this really threw me off Ozzy is because Cleo has made it pretty clear up until now that she isn't 100% sure she wants anything to do with him and he's so pushy with her and kissing her to "help her make up her mind" and it just makes me feel very uncomfortable.

Cleo doesn't really seem to think so eventually but it just didn't sit right with me and I hope in the second book he'll calm down a bit and I'll be able to like him more.

He's the only reason its not five stars really. Ooops.

Anyhow, aside from that I really enjoyed reading this book and was really hooked the other day when I finished it. I couldn't put it down because its such a gripping ending and what people will have to keep in mind is that this book is 430 pages so we aren't thrown straight into the action and all-knowing parts, it takes its time, builds up all the important characters and their abilities (yes Cleo isn't the only one) and I definitely think as everything is already laid out, plus a small twist, that the second book will not suffer from second book syndrome and will be a thrilling read too.

Review by: Amanda at Of Spectacles and Books

Why I chose this book:
The author, Christine Manzari, was the one to approach me about reading and reviewing her book. I was going through a really emphatic dystopian stage, and she was more than kind to send me a copy of her self published debut. I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

My Bookish Thoughts:

As far as self-published books go, this was actually pretty good. There were areas that I could see should have been shaved or reworked, but overall, it was a pretty polished piece of work; however, my one major complaint is this: It is so long. 430 pages. I’m a sucker for big books, but this one was a bit long for me.

But it’s not that this story was bad or uninteresting. Manzari created a very interesting world that was still more normal American culture than broken world dystopia, which is not something you see very often. Along with her world, she created genetically modified people called Sophisticates. That is one of the most interesting things about this book. She was very creative and original in the way she made these characters and their attributes.

However, this book left me unfazed when I went a couple weeks without reading it. I generally only read one book at a time, but I found myself reading 3-4 books (and finishing those) while I still tried to get through this book.

I really wanted to love it. I really, really did, but I think it was just way too slow and lost itself in the subplots and scenes that did not further the plot or characters. But to give it some credit, the characters were endearing, and the love interest is very cute (Ozzy is adorable in a mysterious sort of way). So if you are a sucker for a cute story with plenty of flirty-ness and action, then you might really enjoy this book.

I am still glad that I was able to read this book and that Ms. Manzari was kind enough to send me a copy. Many of my book-blogger friends liked this book more than I did, so it may just be me and the time that I read it in. I know she is coming out with the second book in the series in May, so make sure you check it out if you get your hands on a copy of Deviation.

Review Christine Manzari first book in the sophisticates series "Deviation"

Exiting! Thrilling and really great!

We meet Clementine ( whom I totally love!) a human but not like normal ones, she's been genetically modified and altered, but even more than she herself knew.
She experiences this extra modification one night. She tried to acces some files about her donors ( parents ) but kept getting the same message "acces denied" as things got more frustrating, she recived a message from the program that they knew what she was doing and she was not to know her donors and that she was property of the program. It ended very badly for her room ;)

At the beginning we met her best friend cassie, they'd been inseparable since a very young age. Well she comes into the picture later in the book.

Cleo's outburst in her room didn't go unnoticed and was send to the deans office and was told that she was being transferred to a new school 15 minutes later, go goodbyes or hugs.

At the new school St. Ignatius
the book really took its magic over me! I loved how the characters are so trustworthy and how well developed the characters are.
It's so expertly written and Christine has a huge talent for details!

I enjoyed reading Deviation, it was mesmerisingly good! It's a book you should read, not read about!!
Can't wait to read the next installment of the sophisticates series !

To be quite honest, I read this book a while ago, yet couldn't bring myself to write a review of it. Not because it doesn't deserve one, but because I decided no matter if I left a thousand word review, or ten thousand word essay, it simply would not do this book justice. Words fail to comprehend how mesmerizing and lovely this book was. To avoid ruining even a moment of it, i'll simply state that each character, while they may seem familiar, has a level of depth to them, aside from one being shockingly as expected or not quite as developed as she might have been, she does leave a nice bit to change or be relate-able, which I look forward to seeing, even if she doesn't, she serves her role quite fittingly as she is already. My only true issue with this book, was wanting more of it and not wanting to wait a year for a sequel, which will be quite worth the wait. I recommend this book for another even remotely interested in the genre, as no matter how many books i've read since, I still find myself tempted to read it again, and hopefully we won't have to wait a year to enjoy the next.

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

So this book is a sci-fi, dystopian romance novel. It takes place after an attack on the US and their solution to create an elite group of advanced superhumans to protect and serve the country.

My thoughts? The plot was good. I liked the idea of Sophisticates but then I was bombarded with so many characters and information that I was sent reeling. Then the events happened so quickly that by the time I reached the middle of the book I was slightly bored.

Cleo was trying to learn more about herself and about controlling her powers, she was trying to learn more about her parents and the secrets behind the Program. At the same time she was making friends and enemies -- oh and flirting with cute cadets. You know, typical girl stuff.

And so my overall rating of this book is good. However, I probably won't recommend this book to my hardcore dyatopia loving friends because they will certainly hate me if I do so.

The one thing that bugs me? Where is the sequel! Gimme, gimme...

I enjoyed this book a lot. In fact, once I really got started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I like the tie-in of the War on Terror, I like the overall concept, and I think it was really well written (with exception of the the uncaught editing errors that seem to frequent contemporary books). The only reason I can't give this book the full star allotment is that it wasn't a fully original idea, though the presentation was unique (and I liked the way the story was presented). I'm caught up in this story. Seriously, when is the sequel coming out?

I quite enjoyed this book. It's an interesting take on the dystopian genre where there are a select few who develop super powers. There's also some fabulous code names (more on those in the full review), and I rather enjoyed the love interest (and the fact that there was not a love triangle to be found).

One of my favorite things in books is a strong friendship between the female MC and her best friend. We get to experience two such relationships in this book, with Cleo and Cassie, and the developing one between Cleo and Arabella. I'll be interested to see if there's a change in dynamic in the 2nd book.

While I loved the characters and watching their friendships, that’s really all there was. We don’t really get an understanding of the Program, how it got started after Wormwood or how it works once the students graduate and become adults. It felt like there was a lot of worldbuilding (or explaining) was missing. It also lacked action. Aside from some slight superpowered bullying by Quinnie, there weren’t many action scenes. No real villain until 90% and the reveal and subsequent action scene lacked excitement. Maybe the second and third book have much more action but I am not sure I want to continue the series. It wasn’t bad just a bit boring.

If you love dystopian YA lit, this is a MUST read for you!! I enjoyed Cleo's self discovery throughout the novel and how she came to terms with the program, but also decided that she is not to be controlled or owned. I enjoyed the characters in this book overall, I felt like I could be BFF with Arabella, and I absolutely enjoyed loathing Quinby right along side of Cleo and her friends. Ozzy is mysterious and sweet, and he keeps us guessing! I am intrigued by the government program and their plans for the characters, and I can't wait to read more!!!

Loved this book! Kept reading until I couldn't read anymore & can't wait to find out what happens in the next book! Although not my typical genre, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Deviation & immersing myself in the well-developed characters. The vivid descriptions frequently created a picture in my mind & I loved all of the hometown references! Incredible debut novel...can't wait for more...especially of Cleo & Ozzie!!

WOW, ok I was given this book for free from the author through goodreads. I can't enough tell you how much I enjoyed this book.

I did not think I would like anymore Dystopian since they all seem to be the same. This one thrilled me. 30 years after Wormwood, genetic kids were created with powers. I flied through this book. Can't wait to find out what is on the mind of Manzari for the next installment.

Thanks for an excellent read.

I enjoyed Deviation very much! This isn't my normal genre and I found myself completely into this story line. I absolutely loved the strength and complexity of Cleo. Ozzie and Cleo's relationship is one that I have thought of many times since finishing the book. My only issue was the ending. Ready for #2!

If you liked "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent," then you need to check this book out. It's an excellent first novel by the author. Full disclosure: I'm friends with the author, so I may be a little biased. Best thing to do is get it from Amazon and check it out for yourself!

I was provided a Reviewer Copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Set in a dystopian world, this is really a story about a crazy ass boarding school and people with powers.

This was a fun, action-packed read. I read it really fast and couldn't put it down.
The plot was pretty interesting, captivating even.
I didn't love the main characters though. I mean I liked them fine but I didn't love them.
Still, the dynamics between the friendships were great. I just didn't love the main romance... I Couldn't really feel it.
Also, the twist at the end left me kinda disappointed. It was a bit too telenovela to me!

All in all though, I enjoyed it and I really want to read the rest of the series.

Deviation is amazing. I had no idea what this book was about when I picked it up, but I'm so happy I did. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Deviation by Christine Manzari.
This was a good read with likeable characters. Slow in places but good in others. 3*.
