"I am truly extraordinarily impressed with the Bulimia Help Method. It is really impressive and very approachable"- Susan Paxton, Past President of the Academy for Eating Disorders & Professor at La Trobe University
"There is much helpful, practical, and inspirational advice in this program, which is all backed by thorough research and the experience of thousands of recovered bulimics." - Kathryn Hansen, Author of Brain over Binge About the book What if everything you have been told about bulimia nervosa was wrong?
Let me explain... Due to continual purging of food many people with bulimia exhibit symptoms of starvation.
Studies show us that many of the symptoms that might have been thought to be specific to bulimia nervosa are actually the results of starvation (Pirke & Ploog, 1987).
Side effects of starvation include powerful binge urges, an insatiable appetite, food obsession, depression, anxiety and OCD.
Keep in mind, this has nothing to do with your upbringing, personality or emotional state. If the healthiest, happiest person on the planet restricted their food intake, they would make themselves susceptible to becoming bulimic.
We argue that bulimia is mostly a physical condition, not a mental one. This helps explain why there is no scientific evidence to support the assertion that eating disorders are a consequence of a mental illness or that resolving underlying psychological problems leads to recovery (Walsh & Cameron, 2005).
Chances are, you are not weak, broken or faulty because you cannot stop bingeing on food. You are normal and are simply suffering the side effects of starvation.
To recover, we need to remove the starvation state. The mind body connection is profound. Once we heal the body, many biological and physiological changes will occur in your body. Your brain chemistry will start to normalize, your hormone levels will balance out and this will go a a long way to resolving any psychological issues you may have. Put simply, if you heal the body, you can heal the mind.
This is the primary concern and focus of The Bulimia Help Method. We show you step-by-step, in detail, exactly how to remove the starvation state and recover for life. This book gives readers:
A profound shift in their understanding and attitude towards bulimia, themselves and recovery. A unique step-by-step recovery plan for undoing the damage of starvation and overcoming bulimia nervosa. Effective strategies for dealing with relapses, binge urges and road blocks in recovery. A powerful way to eat that will allow you to remain at your healthy weight for life without ever dieting again. And much more...
Reader Feedback “The Bulimia Help Method has saved my life. I don’t say that lightly. I have been bulimic for 10 years and I have been full of despair. I thought I would never recover and this sad sham of a life was what mine would be. I have been to doctors, therapy, and read every self-help book; this was the first time anything worked. I finally have hope again!!!” - Nadine
“I am in a position to "graduate" from your recovery program.
I'll admit that I only made it about a quarter of the way through the book, and already that was enough to tell me that I was wasting my time. This book is very clearly focused on those already at a 'healthy' weight, and fails to acknowledge extremely overweight bulimics. It's all well and good to tell someone to focus on their "set point weight" and accepting what that is, but unless you're telling me it's perfectly acceptable for me to remain at 200lb because "that's the weight I am when I'm not trying to lose weight", then I highly question the effectiveness for me. Rather than hopeful, all this book has left me feeling is more hopeless and guilt-ridden about my body. I also dislike how dismissive the book is on mental health issues, making me feel that I can't 'qualify' as a bulimic because my issues are surrounded by emotional and mental factors.
In short, good for you if it works for you. But if you're a very overweight person suffering from anxiety and depression alongside the bulimia, I really doubt that it will work for you.
I think this book could be incredibly helpful. I will find out as I try the strategies myself over the next few months. I could, however, have done without the numerous testimonials and personal stories throughout the book. I don't feel like they really added anything of value
A look at recovery through a concise way of intuition eating through a stage method that doesn't put you in the 100% go your own way yet. It works on the principle of getting in three meals and three snacks in a day minimum with a max out of three hours in between feedings. Can start on a time thing but as you get more into recovery the hope is to trust your gut (literally) to help you eat when the body feels hungry.
I wish it would have offered more to it because at times it just seemed like a preview o just go visit the site that goes along with the book rather than just telling you what it is eluding too. Basically after looking to the website it just the recovery stories, bonus content, and then coaching stuff.
Simple, practical, yet not really persuasive on some points, of course everyone is different and there is no one size fits all method that can be perfect for everybody. The causes and roots of your ED might be different than those explained in the book but it gives you some simple and easy guidelines to follow and start to get better. But as we all know, there is no magic book or magic pill so don’t expect a miracle, nothing work but practicing a new healthier behavior daily, changing our mindset and repeat everyday..
Although it has a disclaimer excluding other eating disorders inc. Anorexia, and isn't advised for anyone who is underweight it was nonetheless an interesting read; taking a rather different approach from the usual CBT route of most treatment plans. The advice on how and when to eat seems sound and I feel that with medical supervision it would be a method that could help with anorexia too, but that is simply a personal opinion. As with all self help - you actually have to try it to know if it works. It felt like a very practical and simply laid out plan, step by step guidance on a way forward from very disordered behavior to something more natural and intuitive. I did like the straightforwardness of it, but there were a few issues I felt were not covered fully, and there were a few grammatical and spelling errors that grated on my nerves hence the 3 stars only.
I have suffered from bulimia for 22 years, I'm 38 years old. I've never sought any type of help before, because I guess I thought I could sort it out myself. Evidently after 22 years this wasn't going to happen. I'd finally had enough of the shame, guilt and self loathing. I read this whole book in one night and I felt the author had seen into my soul. I am now right at the start of my recovery b uhh t I truly believe I can do it, thanks to this book. If you think it's hopeless, that you will never be free, just given up a few hours of your time, read this book, and maybe change your life. And good luck xxx
