She’s in the front office. He’s a star player. It’s a match-up guaranteed to melt the ice… Left winger Jared Landry is one of the (gorgeous) faces of Vancouver’s Warriors hockey team—except he’s not comfortable in the spotlight. Face-time with the fans puts him in a vulnerable position, bringing up past memories—and present complications. But a certain fiery newcomer won’t take no for an answer...
Meghan O’Riley is the Warriors’ new events coordinator, and she wants everyone on board—including Jared. Meghan knows he has a history of flaking out on important occasions, and she has no patience for his devil-may-care attitude. But Meghan will have to hone her rookie flirting skills to get the star to commit to the team—and maybe even to her…

A really soft 3.5 sighing stars. I wanted so much from this book and didn't get it. I think I like when books like this are really emotional and take you for a ride and this novel just didn't do that. There wasn't anything to make this stand out and shine like a golden star and I so desperately wanted it to. The lead characters are both likeable but nothing out of this world special or at least weren't presented that way. Keeping this short and sweet, the read was just okay.
This was just one of those books that you wish you'd never started.
Summary: Meghan has started a new job working public relations for a professional hockey team. Which is where she meets star player Jared Landry. Despite thinking he's a conceited jerk she is attracted to him. She doesn't think he could remotely be interested in her but he is.
(And really that's about all there is to this book)
Series Note: Part of a series but I haven't read any others and don't plan to.
Review: I don't enjoy writing bad reviews but really, this book was just painful to read. I came really close several times to giving up but forced myself to go on.
Where to start? The biggest negative for me was the writing itself. First off, it's written in a 3rd person present tense POV which is just weird and awkward to read. I will never read another book written in that style. I couldn't stand it.
Besides that, the writing itself is unsophisticated, unnecessarily detailed in spots and overly simplified. Writing style and quality are important to me in making a good book and this one didn't get remotely close on any level. There was no complexity or flow to the writing, just simple basic description. And then there would be an entire paragraph about taking a bite of food, describing each step. I need more to the writing style than this book gave me.
Then there was the fact that there are constant contradictions throughout the book. Jared says he had a brief relationship with another character then it's that they were together 9 months. Jared is constantly being called and treated like a playboy when there is absolutely no evidence of that. I don't call a guy who dated someone for 9 months (or however long it was) a playboy! And one second Jared is thinking about how much he wants a family and then the next he can't commit to anything. Meghan talks about hating cheaters but sleeps with Jared and later tells her friend she thinks he has a girlfriend. Round and round in convoluted circles this story went. It was nauseating.
As for the characters? I hated Meghan. I wanted her to take a long walk off a short pier. She's judgmental, fickle, and obnoxious. She's constantly jumping to conclusions for no good reason and acting like a bitch. And Jared was a dick half the time.
Considering I didn't really like either character made the romance very flat. But it was flat anyway. Jared chasing Meghan, then ignores her. Meghan says she doesn't like him but can't stop thinking about him. She wants him then she doesn't want him. One second she believes he's broken up with the other girl (Lauren) and then someone else says something completely innocent to her and she's sure they're back together.
I felt like I was reading about two hormonal, fickle junior high kids who are passing notes to their friends asking if the other likes them and then getting mad and dumping them when one doesn' smile at the other in the hallway between classes. Seriously. That's what it felt like.
I was relieved to finish. There wasn't anything about this book that worked for me. I apologize to the author, but that's my honest review.
And now I plan to reread a favorite book to cleanse the palate, so to speak.
I was hoping this series would get better in time. In this book I had a real problem with the two main characters. They are attracted to one another and want to get to know one another but yet they still hold back.
I honestly got tired of Meghan whining about Jared and Lauren. It got to the point I just had to skim over it. Let me back up. Jared was dating Lauren and Jared broke up with her then Lauren becomes some crazy stalker and is telling everyone they are together and engaged when it's not true. But the whole time Meghan listens.
The whole story wasn't what I was expecting at all. Another thing is that Meghan wants to be with him but she is so damn insecure it's like the record keeps playing over and over again. Jared I liked at first because I thought he was shy but as the story went on he looked stupid! He tell her he likes her and thinks about her all the time but yet he really does nothing to convince her.
The other problem I had was this story takes place and they kind of are seeing each other for 2 months yet they hardly see each other and spend time together or even talk on the phone. They keep telling everyone they aren't together then before you know it it's the end of the book and they are in love. I was so confused and disappointed.
I would say I hope the next book is better but unless the author writes better characters and and makes the relationships make some kind of sense I think this might be the last book I read in this series.
I'm afraid this book didn't work for me on any level. I'm usually a big fan of sports romances, but here my frustration completely negated any enjoyment I could have gained from the genre.
I found the lead characters to be completely frustrating, their inability to communicate with one another was ridiculous! Matt was frustrating, but Meghan was flat out annoying! I mean how many times and in how many different ways could Jared AND EVERYBODY ELSE state that he was no longer involved with his ex? She just came across as stupid by the end, and I'm afraid I can't root for stupid.
I also found Groome's writing style to be rather jarring at times. There would be long conversations without much in the way of description of how the words were being said (if that makes sense), so it was a bit like reading the transcript of a conversation rather than a story.
When I'm reading a romance I look for the lead couple to have the foundation of a lasting relationship (unless I'm reading a book the length of the Bible I don't really think there's time for more!) and here unfortunately I didn't feel that this was present. The conflict was only resolved because the truth was rubbed in Meghan's face, not because she realised her own misconceptions were wrong. She learned nothing and that depressed me. Disappointing!

I couldn't get on with the present tense style -- which I found too jarring in this third person POV -- nor the confusion over which character said what, the stupid conversation between the heroine and her rubbish boyfriend or the massive info-dump conversation between the hero and his sister in chapter three.
Summary of said conversation: He spoils his nephew because he wants a family, that's also why he has a big house. The big house which his girlfriend tried to move into. But despite really wanting a wife and a family, he didn't want it with her because she was a raging psycho. Did he also mention that he really wants a family, 'cause he really does. But oh, he has so much unrelieved guilt over the death of his friend. Which was ten years ago.
End conversation on a pair of clichés about time passing too quickly. And we're all set to know precisely how this book is going to go.
Yep. I'm out. Sorry, but I couldn't read any more.
This book has a great plot and has great potential. Unfortunately, there was something about this book that made it a struggle to get through. There was just too much drama. Jared needs to grow up and Meghan needs to grow a pair and stand up for herself. Plus, I almost felt that the third person point of view felt forced. I probably wouldn't have minded the character issues as much if the writing hadn't felt so off. I was so excited about this book. The blurb was great. When I got approved by NetGalley to read it, I read it immediately. I waited two weeks to read it again in hopes of liking it better. Unfortunately, I was just as disappointed. So I waited a week to see if I could like it more. That just didn't happen. This is by far the lowest rating I have ever given a NetGalley book. I've never read this author before, so I don't know if this is typical of her writing. I will try her one more time though.
Practice Makes Perfect is book three in the Warriors series centering on the Vancouver Warriors hockey team by Charlene Groome. I really like sports novels and I do follow hockey, so I was excited to read this book! Unfortunately, it just didn't work for me. The characters were genuinely likeable but there was nothing that made me want to continue reading the book and maybe the series. I kept thinking there was going to be some huge secret that would be revealed that tied in all the backstories, but there wasn't. So let's break this down shall we!
I liked Meghan. She was complex and we learn a lot about her based on her former relationships and through her job. She's in public relations so she is well aware that actions do have consequences. Although I wanted to just shake her a few times since she was being so dense, I understood why she did what she would do.
I also like Jared. He carries guilt from his cousin's past accident and he can't get beyond it. Because of that, he closes himself off-a lot. He really likes Meghan but doesn't really tell her how he is feeling. She's forced to guess where he's coming from. Then his ex-Lauren makes herself known and that jumbles things up even more!
I liked that Meg didn't care about Jared for his money. She genuinely liked him. The problem of the constant doubt about his feelings for her and realizing that Lauren may still be in the picture, takes its toll not only on Meg, but we as readers too. The story dragged with little activity to debunk Meg's theories. Jared sets Lauren straight but never says anything to Meg. Even though we are treated to a couple of sexual trysts, there was little conversation between them. The sex scenes were too watered down for my tastes and the constant doubt went on too long in my opinion. I would've have enjoyed more banter between Jared and the teammates or a couple of scenes highlighting a game being played.
Overall I gave this book 3 stars. It was a pleasing read. I really wanted to like it more, but it just didn't do that for me. The author wrote this from the third person so I think that had an impact on why I couldn't really connect with the characters. It felt like their thoughts were observed and never really came from themselves.
3 stars/3 flames
This book was provided to me for the express purpose of an honest review. The opinions and rating in this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.
I have read previous books in this series, so I was super excited to get this book! I liked the characters and the back stories about their lives. Jared's guilt over his cousin's death was realistic and a big part of who he was. Meghan was really well developed as a character. Her past relationships are explored in context of her relationship with Jared. The sex and the lust between the two is hot. I liked reading about the other hockey players and getting a glimpse behind the scenes of the industry. Meghan's job was really interesting and is probably the dream job of most Canadian women. Crazy Lauren was a great source of conflict. She adds enough tension to keep Jared and Meghan apart. This is where the book slowed down for me though. While I really liked that Meghan wasn't a 'puck bunny' or into Jared for his money, the constant doubt outweighed the intimate scenes of the developing relationship. Too much time was devoted to questioning what they wanted and what the other one wanted. It's a fine line to balance as an author - how to create the tension and hold it, but it got a little frustrating. I also wished that other couples from the previous books had made an appearance. It would have been great to catch up with them. Overall, this book is a 3+ for me. I liked the plot, the characters and the hockey elements (although I wish Meghan had gone to watch a game or two so we could see Jared in action). I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series!
I wanted to like this book. I love sports-themed romance series, and didn't realize I was jumping into this one at book 3 until after I'd finished it.
I'm not sure if I'm using the right words here-I'm too many years removed from grammar lessons-but the book is written third person, but in present tense. It was very jarring at the start, and although it presented a challenge that is probably half the reason I stuck it out, the tense makes this a difficult read all the time. It doesn't feel natural so I could never sink deep enough to get lost in the story.
If that was my only criticism, my rating would have been higher. If nothing else, I've got to commend the author for finding a distinctive voice. But if felt like she couldn't decide what thede characters would be about so she just took a little from each of the stereotypical conflicts, and that can still work if you connect with the character. But it felt like I was too far-removed from both of the leads for their scattered reasoning about why they wouldn't/shouldn't/couldn't be together to make sense. The eventual HEA was so abrupt and out of the blue that the only thing I could feel was relief I'd made it to the end.
Practice Makes Perfect (The Warriors #3) by Charlene Groome Practice Makes Perfect by Charlene Groome is a contemporary hockey romance that take’s place in Vancouver. Warriors’ left winger Jared Landry does not like to be the center of attention. However, the Warriors’ new events coordinator, Meghan O’Riley, does not take no for an answer where attendance to team events are concerned. This sports romance is suitable for a new adult to adult audience.
I like Jared. He does not like too much attention. He feels responsible for his cousin’s death, and it has affected his life greatly. I liked Meghan, but she was a bit too insecure; she was driving me a little crazy at times. Jared’s ex-girlfriend, Lauren, is nuts. I really wanted to be able to give this book a higher rating. The plot had a lot of potential. I just kept getting this feeling that this story was rushed and could have been better. I’m still interested in continuing this series.

Good story of love that takes a while to understand & realize. Meghan & Jared both work for the same hockey team. Jared as a star player & Meghan in the PR department. When Jared first meets Meghan he thinks she's someone looking for selfies in the arena that he's supposed to be doing a fundraiser at. When he finds out that she's in charge of the event he's intrigued & decides to see where they could go together, but he has one major problem an ex that won't go away & still thinks they are a couple. This causes problems for Jared because she starts showing up at events & he can't stay because of the embarrassment of it all & it also caused problem with Meghan & him over his no shows. With his ex showing up & telling everyone including Meghan that they are back together & getting married, Meghan doesn't know what to do with her feelings for Jared especially after their nights together. Will Jared finally get his ex to understand it's over or will he lose his chance with Meghan because of her? Love this series as a whole & look forward to the next book.

**I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review** It was Meghan's first day as a public relations coordinator and Keri was her boss. Jared, a hockey player, who thought Megan was a fan, offered to take a picture, then apologized when he found out who she was. Meghan stays on Jared's mind and he want's to get to know more about her. Meghan's best friend is Brie. When Brie brings up her being interested in someone, Jared comes to mind. Meghan works for the hockey team Jared is on. Meghan had been hurt before, so she didn't trust she had a chance with Jared and that he could be who she needed. Lauren assured her that Jared and her were together. She knew her heart but wasn't positive about Jared. Meghan was a good character. I enjoyed the ins and outs with her, as well as Jared and all of the characters. Jared grew and I enjoyed watching that. The story and plot were really good. I would recommend this for anyone that enjoys this genre.
I feel the need to apologise in advance, as I never write reviews for books I rate less than 3 stars, however as I was approved to read this book via NetGalley, I am compelled to write the review.
The storyline actually had promise, which makes it even more disappointing that I’m unable to rate this book higher.
Unfortunately the writing was stilted and unemotional, with the dialogue resembling a shopping list due to its lack of flow and over punctuation.
The author would benefit from a decent critique partner and reputable editing.
For me this book was a disappointment. I love sport romance especial the Hockey one but these particular did not speak to me. I didn’t like the writing style. The plot was very predictable both characters boring and not interesting. Meghan reason of flirting with Jared is a little bit absurd. She don’t need a man but will try if the advice from the magazine about flirting and finding a man really work. I couldn’t relate to neither of them. The book did not appeal to me and it was hard to finish it.

Jared sometimes likes to try and get inventive when it comes to alone time with his woman, "we can make room.” He takes a quick look behind them. “Okay, you’re right. No room.” He places his hand on her thigh and leaves it there. “I’m so turned on." I liked this book I love sports romances.
DNF @ 25%. The writing style is distracting and just not my cuppa. It's all third person present tense which just flows oddly for me and the dialogue is written with few, if any, tags. Between that and the characters failing to capture my interest, I have to put it aside.
This was a good book. The story kept me invested and interested until the end.I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review.
Started out good but it kinda went around around. They were always saying the same things. The girl needs to grow some balls and talk to jared instead of always coming to dumb conclussions.
I really tried to love this book. I enjoyed the concept and grew to like the characters even when they were at their worst. There where some fun times that made the book worthwhile, but there were also moments where the story dragged. Actually, I liked a lot of things. But the most important element for me--the romance--left me disappointed.
Unfortunately, I found the connection between Meghan and Jared lacking. They spent too much time apart for me to believe their connection had grown to something more. My enjoyment of this story would have increased if they wouldn't have been running circles around each other half the time. Although I enjoyed both characters and found them to be interesting, I could not seem to connect to them fully. I found myself agitated by Meghan's doubts and insecurities. Even when I understood where she was coming from, I couldn't help but think that she was the main obstacle in her relationship with Jared.
The story was okay, but honestly the bad grammatical errors and inconsistent verb tenses detract from the overall story making it difficult to read. Had this novel been through a better editing process maybe it would have become a better story.
I liked the two main characters Jared and Meghan, but at times their POVs seemed short and not thought out. Again it appears to be left out of the editing. Sometimes the ideas were not flushed out and the storytelling skipped crucial character insights.
This is the first book I've read in this series. I love hockey books, but unfortunately this one didn't work for me. The pace of the book was too slow. The main characters Jared and Meghan had an instant attraction but it took the whole book for them to get together. I finished the book, but there was nothing outstanding that made me want to go back and read the first two in the series. I received the ARC from Netgalley for a honest review.
No. This book is just a big fat no for me. The characters were flat, all the conflicts would have been solved with honest communication and I was so annoyed at everyone at the end of the book that I could not have cared less for their happily ever after. The two leads didn't seem compatible at all. This one needed to cook a little longer in the plot machine - there's good ideas in there, but this book just didn't work for me.
I was given a free copy of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Being a lover of sports romance, I had high hopes for this book and it fell short. Meghan drove me crazy. She was too wishy washy. The point of view seemed to change in the middle of chapters and was hard to follow at times. The story had so much more potential that could have been developed into something more.
On the positive, this is book 3 of the series but easily read as a stand alone.
This book oh this series. I'm a huge fan of hockey and a huge fan of romance. I'm going to say this one left me confused. From Jared and Lauren's crap to Meghan. Jared and Meghan are together but I'm going to say this their relationship lacked greatly. They rarely spend time together, talking on the phone or anything, then out of nowhere they are in love at the end of the book. Could have greatly used some more focus there.
I just wanted so much for this series and it's just so lacking.
I thought the book had a lot of promise but it went shitty with how stupid Meghan was regarding Jared. After awhile I thought he was stupid as he continued to fall in love with someone I couldn't respect. Then I was mad at the author and now that I got to the end, which was mercifully fast I was mad at myself for wasting my reading time. geez.
Ugh... Just couldn't get in to this one. The writing isn't very good. The dialogue is stilted, dull and doesn't read like a story but more like a transcript. Just not my Cuppa. Didn't read any of the previous stories, but don't think it matters much.
