Books . . . chocolate . . . tea. These are a few of my favorite things. Combine them with a sunny summer day, and perhaps a beach or pool, and call me happy!
Books have always been a part of my life, and reading has always been a favorite pastime. In my childhood bookworm days, I'd hide away for hours with Trixie Belden or Laura Ingalls Wilder. These days, I read as much as I can, making it a priority to carve out time for my latest book club read. I love curling up with a cup of tea and getting lost in a good story.
A few years ago I decided to sit down at my computer and give voice to some stories that have been rattling around in my head for a long time. That launched me into the world of fiction writing, specifically the world of romance. So far, my completed novels and works-in-progress fall into the genres of women’s fiction, contemporary romance, and mainstream with romantic elements.
My novels are about people and their relationships – what brings them together, what keeps them apart, what brings them joy or annoys the hell out of them. My intent is to bring to life interesting and ‘real’ characters that you, the reader, can relate to in real-life situations that combine a little fun, plenty of drama (with perhaps a tear or two), and big helpings of friendship, love and self-discovery, and will leave you either cheering or sighing with a satisfied smile as you turn the final page. And just so you know . . . I like a happy ending.
This book was a sweet read. The main characters were well-matched. Katlyn was career-driven and sometimes blinded by wanting to take New York by storm, but her character grew, and a lot of that growth was thanks to Nick, whose character was captivating. Their romance had chemistry. The cast of secondary characters was equally enjoyable, with Katlyn’s adorable grandmother and a tense relationship with her mother. A recommended read of fun, drama, the artistic scene, and a heartwarming romance rolled into one.
Katlyn Andrews has an innate gift that flows through her fingertips and onto the canvas. Fuelled by ambition, she set her sights on showcasing her work at one of the prestigious galleries in New York. Yet, as the holiday season approached, she faced an unwelcome obligation—spending Christmas at home. The thought of family gatherings with her judgmental mother was something she dreaded.
Meanwhile, Nick Summers was on the brink of a breakthrough. He was determined to secure a commission for a custom mantelpiece and a finely detailed bookcase from the affluent Rebecca Andrews. Winning her favour could catapult him into the world of luxury furniture, attracting the attention of other wealthy families eager for unique, handcrafted pieces. Nick was also gearing up for an audition for the television design show “Home Builders.” Success there could change the trajectory of his career, elevating his business to heights he had only dreamed of.
Kat and Nick, though emerging from contrasting social backgrounds, find a powerful bond in their shared passion for art. Each stroke of paint on the canvas seems to echo their vibrant emotions, bringing them closer together in a world filled with colour, creativity, romance, and possibly love. However, how could they nurture their relationship when she was anchored firmly in New York and he was rooted in the serene landscapes of Colorado?
Darlene Deluca has penned a captivating romantic novel that enchants from the very first page. Titled “Painted Dreams (Art from the Heart),” this heartwarming tale transports readers to a place in which love and creativity intertwine seamlessly. It is a feel-good story that wraps you in warmth and hope, inviting you to explore the depths of romance and the beauty of art.
Kat grew up feeling the immense pressure of her mother's expectations, which loomed over her like a heavy cloud. No matter the effort she put forth or the accomplishments she achieved, it always felt like she fell short, leaving her with a lingering sense of inadequacy. In search of the love and acceptance that seemed always just out of reach, she found solace in her beloved Nana Kitty. The story begins with Kat’s reluctant return to her childhood house for the holidays, a season typically bursting with happiness, but for her is cloaked in dread, as she braces herself for the predictable storm of conflict with her mother. Rebecca, a woman fiercely dedicated to maintaining an immaculate image, considers Kat’s choice to pursue a career in the arts an embarrassing deviation from a respectable profession. The palpable tension that simmers between them has intensified since Kat (Katherine) officially changed her name to Katlyn. This choice symbolises more than just a name change; it highlights Kat’s tumultuous relationship with her mother and her profound sense of alienation within the walls of her own home. When the two of them are together, the atmosphere is thick with unspoken resentment, exacerbated by Rebecca’s sharp, critical nature and the passive role her father plays, leaving Kat often feeling like a stranger in her own family. Kat’s relationship with her mother is a poignant spectacle, marked by an aching longing. All she yearns for is a simple, heartfelt acknowledgement that her mother is proud of her, but no matter how hard she strives or what achievements she racks up, the elusive words remain unspoken, creating a chasm filled with disappointment and sorrow. This persistent absence weighs heavily on Kat’s heart, casting a shadow over her spirit and shaping her sense of self-worth in profound and painful ways, making it impossible for the reader not to feel the intensity of her struggles.
At 28 years old, Kat remains tethered to her parents, a reflection of her sheltered upbringing. The very fact that she relies on their financial support speaks volumes about her privileged background. Despite the strained relationship with her mother, Kat’s parents are a safety net, always ready to catch her. Her position at the Museum of Modern Art fills her with a sense of purpose, yet there’s a burning desire within her heart: to see her artwork displayed in one of New York’s elite galleries. Kat dreams that such recognition might finally earn her mother’s approval, a prize she has long sought. In many ways, Kat’s entitlement shines through vividly. She wouldn’t dream of submitting her work to a smaller, less prestigious gallery; the mere thought seems beneath her. She throws money around with an almost carefree attitude, as if it were confetti fluttering through the air, and indulges in the luxury of dining out frequently, relishing the finest culinary experiences the city has to offer. Though Kat is undeniably a charming character, radiating warmth and creativity, this aura of entitlement serves as a stark reminder of her upbringing. If she truly aspires to flourish in the competitive art world, she still has some growing up to do, navigating the tumultuous path toward genuine independence and self-fulfilment. The author has created a remarkably intriguing character, and as the reader follows Kat on her transformative journey, they witness her evolution into the person she was always destined to become. The reader feels deep satisfaction as she grows, admiring her strength and self-discovery.
Nick Summers emerges as a charming and enigmatic figure, effortlessly captivating those around him. A skilled craftsman, he possesses a remarkable talent for woodworking, creating exquisite, bespoke furniture pieces that speak to his artistry and dedication. Should he earn the opportunity to work with Rebecca, he will transform her space with an elegantly crafted mantelpiece and intricately designed bookshelves that evoke both warmth and sophistication. At first glance, Nick perceives Kat as merely a “pretty little rich girl.” Yet, as their paths intertwine, he finds himself drawn to her and falls for her with an intensity that surprises him. Despite his growing affection, he is acutely aware of her imperfections, and, much like anyone grappling with their flaws, Kat struggles to accept his gentle criticism. Nick is a genuinely kind-hearted, easy-going man with a likeable demeanour that makes him immediately approachable. He possesses an undeniable charisma, enhanced by his rugged good looks, embodying the quintessential qualities of a great romantic lead. In stark contrast to Kat’s sheltered existence, Nick has diligently ascended from humble beginnings, and after years of perseverance and hard work, he is finally beginning to reap the rewards of his labour, finding success and fulfilment in his passion for crafting extraordinary creations.
Nana Kitty radiates warmth and affection, enveloping Kat in a love that feels more maternal than grandmotherly. Their bond is incredibly tight-knit, a vivid contrast to the often cold and distant relationship Kat shares with her mother. In Nana Kitty’s presence, Kat’s heart finds solace, as if she has stepped into a sanctuary where she truly belongs. Nana Kitty, with her gentle smile and unwavering support, becomes a driving force in the story, ready to move mountains for her granddaughter’s happiness. She is determined to ensure that every moment spent together is filled with joy and love, proving that the strongest ties can often bind generations together.
The romantic tension between Kat and Nick is nothing short of electrifying, and an undeniable chemistry sparks to life the instant their eyes meet. Yet, as they navigate the complexities of a long-distance relationship, their journey is laden with challenges that tug at their hearts. Throughout the novel, readers are drawn into the emotional rollercoaster, fervently hoping for a way for their love to triumph against the odds. While there are a few intimate scenes that add a layer of allure, the story remains beautifully tender, emphasising the depth of their connection rather than the explicit detail of a love scene. The romantic moments are vividly portrayed, wrapping the reader in a warm embrace of emotion that feels remarkably real and relatable. Each exchange, each stolen glance, and each sweet gesture resonates with authenticity, making their story all the more enchanting.
“Painted Dreams (Art from the Heart)” by Darlene Deluca unfolds as an exquisitely crafted love story, artfully blending emotion and artistry. Readers are transported into a world where each character comes to life with depth and authenticity, their dreams and desires echoing throughout the pages. The settings are painted with vivid brushstrokes, immersing the audience in lush landscapes and intimate moments that resonate long after the last page is turned. This enchanting novel is an absolute treasure for anyone who cherishes romantic fiction.
Review by Mary Anne Yarde Yarde Book Reviews & Book Promotion
Kat has ties to Colorado, but she left for college and never looked back. She has dreams of making a name for herself in the art world. She is an accomplished artist, but is having a hard time breaking into the big time. Does she have her sights set too high? Nick meets Kat while bidding on a job. It is love at first sight, at least for Nick. It takes Kat a little longer to come around. However, the chemistry is there.
Love hits us when we are least expecting it, even with roadblocks thrown in the way. However, communication can solve a multitude of problems. Nick and Kat do have conversations, especially about the distance, but how deep are these conversations? NYC and Colorado Springs are not close to one another. It will take a lot for something to work between the two of them.
These two unlikely individuals have a lot going for them, but also a lot working against them. Kat's mother is unsupportive, but she has a gem of a grandmother who offsets any negativity from mom. I felt the tension between Kat and her mom. It was evident that she holds something against Kat, but we really don't know what. It doesn't help that her mother is a socialite snob. Nick is successful, but because he doesn't come from the country club set, she looks down at him. This is a shame, because he is quite an amazing artist and is going places.
Kat has issues of her own. She is working at the MoMA, which is a feat, but her thoughts about where her work should be displayed/sold are unrealistic. She feels like she should start at the top, versus working her way up, as many do. Is it her upbringing that has influenced this way of thinking? It is also the cause of a rift between her and Nick. Can they find a solid middle ground?
This was an enjoyable story that offers a variety of elements and conflict to keep things interesting. No life is smooth sailing, and watching these two navigate what is thrown at them was what I would expect to see in life.
I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 stars here and on other sites.
Painted Dreams is the first book in the Art From the Heart series by author Darlene Deluca, and I look forward to reading more. It was a pleasant surprise to see that this book is part of a series since there’s definitely more stories to tell.
Kat and Nick unexpectedly meet at her parents’ house in Denver when he’s there to give an estimate for a renovation and she’s on a rare visit home from New York City. There’s a definite attraction, much to her mother’s chagrin, since he’s the help. Nick and Kat have art in common, even though they work in different mediums. They have other compatible interests, and it was fun to watch their feelings grow as they explore their newfound friendship, or is it more especially when she’s in New York and he’s in Colorado.
The story builds nicely and touches on different emotions and strengths. There is a good flow, and a depth to the characters and the story, especially when things aren’t always perfect. Multiple stories are being told that are seamlessly woven together.
Kat’s grandmother is a breath of fresh air and a joy to be around, especially in her support of Kat, as the rest of her family always seems disappointed with her. There are vivid descriptions of the art in all its forms as well as life in the city. There is some closure with a possible happily ever after in the future, but, unfortunately, many loose ends that I’m hoping will be addressed in the following books. The book did end abruptly, and an epilogue might have helped in that situation.
Painted Dreams is a contemporary romance with endearing main characters and lots of art. Will Kat reach her dreams, especially with Nick and her grandmother competing for the position of being her #1 fan?
I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 stars here and on other sites.
Kat—aka Katlyn—is a gifted artist working at MoMA in New York. She’s been offered the chance to have her art featured at a prestigious art gallery and jumps at the chance, but it doesn’t turn out to be the wonderful opportunity she hoped for—especially when it gets cancelled after she’s paid for advertising, framing, and everything else. Then, she gets tasked with spending the holidays at home. To say she and her mother don’t get along well would be an understatement. Her mother is a socialite snob who doesn’t believe Kat is living up to her expectations. Fortunately, Kat’s grandmother—who is her stronghold—tempers some of the discord.
When she does go home, she meets Nick Summers, a woodworker who is doing some work for Kat’s mother. The two have a quick and intense attraction, but Kat’s mother thinks Nick is definitely below their social status and attempts to disrupt their connection. But Kat and Nick continue to meet up in New York and their romance grows until Kat’s job and the gallery showing fall through. Nick tries to convince her to try some lower-level ideas but she nixes them as being beneath her. When he accuses her of being a snob like her mother, the relationship completely falls apart – but also forces Kat to take a long look at herself and her life.
This is a lovely story about two people who have a shared love of art, but come from two different backgrounds. It is a deep romance that shows a lot of conflict between the two until they can put their differences aside and let love conquer all.
Katlyn Andrews is an artist working at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, chasing her dreams and hoping to make her mark. This Christmas, she returns home—excited to see her Nana and father, but less enthusiastic about the rest of her family, who don't fully respect her career.
During the holidays, she meets Nick Summers, a local craftsman hired to do some work for her mother. Their connection is immediate, and they stay in touch after she returns to New York. What starts as a spark soon turns into a long-distance relationship. But can their bond survive the challenges ahead?
Painted Dreams is a sweet and inspiring romance between two artists from very different backgrounds. The story feels realistic, with a steady pace and minimal drama. I appreciated the contrast between the characters—Katlyn, from a wealthy but unsupportive family, and Nick, who comes from a modest background filled with encouragement. Their relationship develops naturally, and their chemistry is heartwarming. One of my favorite moments was seeing how fiercely Nick stood up for Katlyn.
If you're in the mood for a clean, heartfelt romance with emotional depth and relatable characters, this one is worth picking up.
Artist Katlyn has a dream of having her own show in a New York City gallery. She moves from Denver to NYC to make her dream a reality. She’s so close, she can taste it. While back home in Denver, she meets handsome handyman Nick who is working on her parents’ home. Sizzling chemistry leads to more, no matter he resides in Denver and she in NYC. When Katlyn’s dream shatters, she not sure what to do. Can she see the love in Nick’s heart and hear what he’s telling her? Or is the truth too hard to hear?
Painted Dreams is an emotional story about working hard for your dreams, overcoming life’s obstacles, and discovering romance where you least expect it. This book is expertly written with descriptive narration, emotive tension, opposites attract romance, and characters that leap from the page.
Darlene Deluca has penned an unputdownable story that is part romance, part women’s fiction. The plot is filled with emotional triumphs, failures, and success. I got so caught up while reading, I became the characters.
If you’re looking for a book to take over your life and leave you with a book hangover, read Painted Dreams. Highly recommend.
This intriguing story which offers the reader a behind the scenes peak into the intricacies of woodworking as well as the many styles of fine art, also showcases a hero we’d all want for ourselves, our daughters or our granddaughters. Then there’s Nana Kitty, a grandmother we wish we’d had, or would strive to become. Author Deluca’s attention to the details surrounding fractured family dynamics captured our attention from page 1, then kept us turning the pages to attain a most satisfying conclusion. Thank you!
Based on a scale of 1-5, Painted Dreams merits a 7.
