Townsfolk called him devil. For dark and enigmatic Julian, Earl of Ravenwood, was a man with a legendary temper and a first wife whose mysterious death would not be forgotten. Some said the beautiful Lady Ravenwood had drowned herself in the black, murky waters of Ravenwood Pond. Others whispered of foul play and the devil's wrath. Now Country-bred Sophy Dorring is about to become Ravenwood's new bride. Drawn to his masculine strength and the glitter of desire that burned in his emerald eyes, the tawny-haired lass had her own reasons for agreeing to a marriage of convenience. One was vengence, and in its pursuit she would entangle Julian in a blackmail plot, a dual at dawn, and a dangerous masquerade. The other reason was dearer to her heart, but just as wild a quest: Sophy Dorring intended to teach the devil to love again.

I really enjoy AQ books, or they fall flat for me. I read this for my book club for overlooked heroine and I found it rather bland. I listened to the audiobook and the reader did a good job with the voices. I rate the plot 2* and the audio 4*. I found little romance in the storytelling and the mystery was also tepid. The pace was very slow and why the Earl was called the "Devil" remains the biggest mystery as he seemed more like "Father Knows Best". If there was a promise, he made to his fiancé that he didn't' break I don't know about it. The heroine who has loved Julian for years also missed the mark.

Pros:
- the heroine was kind of my fave. The hero's reactions to her would constantly make me trolololol.
- the way it addressed the imbalance of power between husband and wife in the regency era but in such a way that I felt that the hero and heroine reached a solid compromise. I really, really dislike when the heroine has no power and doesn't push back, maybe that's just me being too modern but whateva whateva
- the handling of the hero wanting sex, boy howdy am I used to that from boys my age, and how it made the heroine uncomfortable to be pressured after one week's acquaintance
- THE LESBIAN AUNT YESSSSSSSSS
- the heroine poking holes through the hero's arguments about honor and behavior since it was super hypocritical yay!
- I liked when the hero was all, but I want to spend time with youuuuuuuuu and the heroine was all, sry 2 busy 4 u bye. Served him right hmph!
- WHO KILLED THE SISTER?? I mean... I wanted to know.
- I greatly enjoyed the hero's delicious, delicious apologies at the end. Aww yeah female fantasy tyvm.

Cons:
- the stereotypical cuckolding first wife who FORCED the hero to be cold and convinced him that women are evillllllll
- sometimes I just really didn't like the hero which I know was the point but le sigh, it made me dislike men in general too (NOT the supposed point of a romance novel I think). The alpha ALPHA HE-MALE hero tends to rub me the wrong way, and that is the general template romantic heroes follow. Oh so it's not important to honor contracts with women? Well, fuck you too!

But yeah, overall I enjoyed it. They fought a lot but eventually worked it out.

Another win by Ms. Quick. Although I didn't quite like the heroine as much as I like the heroine in her other books. Sophy had a couple of TSTL moments. I especially hated the fact that she tried to trick Julian about their first night together by putting red teas (to act as virgin's blood) on the bedsheets. She accidentally spilled some so Julian thought that he ravaged her the night before while in fact nothing happened because she gave him a sleep tonic in the form of herbal teas. Julian was too kind. I would have left her there and then. However, it was an entertaining read despite some flaws. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is my second book from this author and I found myself wondering if she uses the same recipe to each of her books. This story was completely different from "Ravished" yet the same.

We have a wonderful heroine bording on spinsterhood, a cold hero that in some way was gossiped about, a crime/mystery to be solved, and most important of all, wonderful conversations.

I enjoyed this book a little less than the first I read and I wish her books were part of a series that we could have seen the wonderful characters interacting.

The weirdest thing I found about Amanda Quick books is that even though the topics are dark like murder, robbery, rape or attempt rape, adultery, grief and so on a so forth, the writing style is so lighthearted that it borders on comical. It is super weird, I tell you.

This was a fun, entertaining read! I laughed a lot. Sophy was just adorable! She's highly intelligent but clueless in other ways. Poor Julian just wanted an heir and a quiet marriage. He doesn't know what a whirlwind Sophy truly was, but he's in for a shock.

The romance and mystery were lacking. I liked this couple but wish there was more romance. Julian tended to play the father role too much in the relationship. At least in the end, he finally understood and trusted her.

The mystery really doesn't come into play until the end. It wasn't really needed anyway. I've just come to expect a good mystery from AQ.

Conclusion:
This was a delightful read! I would highly recommend this book

I was so angry with this book. On one hand, it had some truly great scenes and plot elements for a Regency romance: the heroine duels a courtesan at one point! How awesome is that? The answer is: very awesome.

On the other hand, I have rarely encountered a character, in a romance book or otherwise, that I loathed more than the "hero" of this novel. There's your stereotypical "alpha male" hero of the Romance genre, and then there's this. Typical Romance alphole I can stand just fine. This... this filled me with rage and inspired pure, unadulterated hate. This particularly distressed me considering how right Amanda Quick can get it with books like Ravished.

-1 Star for that time she drugged him without his knowledge,Whatever may be the reason !
I don't really care for her reason,on why she did so...But the fact that she drugged her husband on her wedding night instead of talking it out or finding some other way to resolve the situation is a bit too difficult for me to digest. And so was the fact that she deceived and misled him into thinking that he hurt and mishandled her that night.

Another -1 for the casual mention of domestic abuse every few chapters...
For example her friend asking her if her husband beat her yesterday in anger or her presenting her self to her husband ready for her 'beating' because she angered her husband by making a mistake.

Or even the hero just casually wondering if 'beating' her on her wedding night went against a gentleman's honor.
Just no.

The hero in this one was an overbearing ass for almost the entire book and there were a few too many casual references to wife beating that drove me nuts. And yet. Why the 5 star rating? Because Quick’s writing is so darn charming. It’s frothy and fun and I absolutely adore the world she creates.

There were fun secondary characters, a lot of interesting mysteries and plot threads, hilarious banter, and some excellent logic that Sophy uses to her advantage to fight for the fair marriage she wants. I loved Sophy. She was quirky, constantly lost things, and looked for honor in all people. She was refreshingly different without being unbelievable or too headstrong. She was simply lovely. Julian I didn’t care for as much. His arrogance and constant hateful thoughts of his first wife were tiresome. However, I kept at it because I always loved to see what Sophy would do next. She chipped away at the high-handedness and I loved seeing how little by little she makes him reconsider his thinking until he started to recognize how Sophy had changed his life for the better. That’s not to say she changed him. Rather she helped open up his worldview and accept Sophy as she was. I loved this. Too many books have this weird obsession with changing people to be the perfect partner. I liked how the characters were the same but they came to understand and respect each other in order to build their marriage. It kept me reading and reading quickly.

This was an oldie but a a goodie as long as the hero’s attitude doesn’t entirely turn you off in the first 30%. I stayed in it and ended up loving the ride.

"Seduction" is the story of Sophy and Julian.

Our hero is the widowed Earl of Ravenwood, who wants a docile broodmare. Taking pity at the plain looking country bred heroine, he proposes a marriage and expects the spinster to jump at the chance- because who else would marry her! She refuses, and his ego is hurt. He then accosts her path, and convinces her to to say yes by agreeing to her demands. But the book has him violating every single one of her requests. He not only refuses to wait three months for seduction, but also take her to London, dictates her reading and eventually gets her with a babe without much wait.
I felt really frustrated and sad for the heroine. Yes, she loved this abomination of a man and did everything to please him. What did he do? Always mistrust her. Throw her love back in her face. Constantly chide and mistrust her. Question all of her decisions. Is overbearing and controlling.

He was honestly VERY unlikable and I go as far as to say I hated him. He had no sense of humor or charm- was very horny and judgmental- and a pathetic husband. The heroine was an adventurous bibliophile, but alas she got trapped by this rabid raccoon. Her medicinal talents and love were wasted.

This technically is not my cup of tea.

“If you were as blunt with all of your admirers then as you are today with me, you undoubtedly terrified them.”
“Am I succeeding in terrifying you, my lord?”
“I assure you, I am beginning to shiver in my boots.”
Sophy almost smiled in spite of herself. “You hide your fear well, my lord.”

My first Quick book in many years – and not as good or entertaining as I expected. After a great fun start, it quickly fell flat and I was pretty bored. I didn't like the heroine (good-hearted but careless, naive, and stubborn), the hero (arrogant, selfish, reckless, and despicable for breaking all his promises), their relationship/love story (unbalanced and underdeveloped), or the crime plot (just meh). The antiquated language in the sex scenes also takes some getting used to, even though it is contemporary. I have to admit that I like it a little more modern in that regard.

I didn't really like this book. The "hero", Julian, was a hypocritical bully who continually broke his solemn word of honor without a second thought.

The premise of the story is that Julian is a rich Earl with a dead first wife and no heirs. His first wife was a slut who cheated on him with practically every man she met and even aborted Julian's baby so that she could continue to have her fun. Now that she's gone, Julian has a strong desire to avoid scandal and wants his next wife to just sit quietly and dispense babies without ever putting a foot wrong.

Sophy is a spinster with a small inheritance that provides her with some measure of freedom. She's intelligent and an independent thinker and she worries that if she accepts Julian's proposal, she'll lose her freedom and by extension, herself. Before agreeing to marry Julian, she asks him to promise her 4 things; 1) That she be allowed to choose her own reading material, 2) That she be allowed to continue to use her inheritance as she sees fit, 3) That he take her with him whenever he goes to London, and 4) That they not consummate their marriage for 3 months so that they have time to get to know one another.

Julian agrees to these conditions and is even offended by the last one. He feels that by asking for his word of honor that he not forcibly claim her in the marriage bed, she's implying he'd rape her, and that's akin to her besmirching his honor. Unfortunately, Julian is a big fat liar with no honor at all, despite what he claims. Even as he gives his word on these 4 conditions, he's privately planning to break every single one, and he does. The only part of this agreement he doesn't break is the second one, that she be allowed to keep her inheritance, and that one only stands because he's about a million times richer than Sophy anyway so he doesn't need her money.

But all the other parts of the agreement get broken within the first week of their marriage and Julian never, EVER admits that he's breaking his word. He continually justifies it to himself by saying that it's his right as her husband to do whatever he wants, or that it's for Sophy's own good that he lay down the law because she's too headstrong, etc.. Never once does he admit that he's completely dishonorable. The worst example of this is when he finally decides to force Sophy to sleep with him and he's got no qualms about it whatsoever because he's confident that he'll be able to force her to feel pleasure and therefore it won't be rape.

Overall it was a sad and downright scary story about how completely powerless women were in this time period. Once Sophy is married to Julian, she really has no rights at all. She'd been counting on Julian's sense of honor to help keep the marriage more of a partnership but unfortunately Julian has no honor so Sophy is screwed. I liked Sophy as a character and thought the way she handled the blackmailing courtesan was fantastic but I didn't understand why she supposedly loved Julian when he treated her with no respect at all. Likewise I had trouble believing that Julian loved Sophy when he clearly didn't respect her or value any of the traits that made her who she was.

**EDIT: Whenever I remember Julian's behavior, I get so angry. So I am correcting my rating... it should be less because of him (I hated him! not the kind of hero I want to read in my romances)... gah, I can see changing my rating again to 1 in a couple of years...**

I give this book 3 stars mostly because of Sophy. I read this book like 3 years ago and then I forgot about it. But one scene has been kept on my mind all the time: when Sophy drugs Julian when he wanted to consummate their marriage. I found that scene very witty, and Julian totally deserved that. I didn't remember the title of the book nor the author, so I posted that particular scene in What is the Name of that Book group, and after 2 weeks or so, I got the answer (thank you Lauren!)

I liked the story especially because of Sophy, she was strong, feminist, clever. And of course, it was very fortunate that she knew about herbs to drug her stupid husband when he reclaimed his "rights as a husband", even if she wasn't willing to. I also liked her younger friends, Anne and Jane, they deserve their own book.

As for Julian... ***sighs*** I really wanted to like him, mostly because Julian is my favorite male name. But he was a complete jerk! Totally sexist, he even had the nerve to be angry with Sophy when she reclaimed her demands to be fulfill (demands that he agreed to accomplish before they were married, but completely ignored after the wedding). He was angry most of the story, I had no patience with this man. In fact, I almost hated him, only after I reminded this was an Amanda Quick book I couldn't hate him.

Anyway, I would recommend this book just for that scene where she drugs him. Because of that this book is, if not great, entertaining.

Having just read the awesomeness that is Ravished by Amanda Quick, I expected much more from this book. The old school elements (super jerk alpha hero and clueless but doesn't think she is heroine) were trying at times. I did like the secondary characters a lot. Jane and Anne, Sophy's friends, were great if a bit underdeveloped. Harriet and Fanny, Julian's aunt and her "friend" (a strongly hinted at lesbian relationship without ever saying it directly) were also fascinating, and I love how their "friendship" was often contrasted with the typical husband/wife relationship in both Sophy's eyes and the minds of the reader. There were a lot of elements that were fun and added to the story involving missing jewels, a kidnapping, a seduced and dead sister, a dual between women, etc. Truthfully, I just didn't like Sophy and Julian. I found myself, frequently throughout the book, wanting to take said book and hit each of them multiple times over the head with it. I'm not sure how many times they frustrated each other in the story even comes close to the number of times each of them frustrated me. And, I just didn't buy the happy ending. I saw no reason they should be in love at the end except that Julian had learned to manipulate Sophy better, and she gives in much easier now that he has said "I love you" once.

Me he divertido mucho, mucho, con éste libro.

The arrogant H was bossy so I didn't like him at first. I liked that the h kept how much she loved him to herself. There's a good murder-mystery to be resolved, missing emeralds and the h pushes the H to the limit with her demands. She's honourable and determined to win him. Loved it.

Seduction would have been a solid 5 star read if Julian hadn't started out as a selfish, manipulative bastard who used Sophy's affections for his own purposes. Granted, that was for her safety, but manipulation for whatever ends does not sit well with me. I also didn't appreciate the fact that he all but demanded Sophy to continue loving him without offering his love in return. Ugh, the injustice of it all.

But meh, I have to admit that the ending did pacify whatever hatred I had for him. In my opinion, he wasn't able to fully redeem himself, but in retrospect, he did manage to understand where he went wrong and I believe he did try his best to make amends.

The writing was better than most of the writer's work, and Sophy was incredible. I just wished Julian wasn't such an ass in the beginning.

didn't really like that she was so deceitful about the supposed "rape". I really disliked her after she pulled that trick and couldn't bounce back to liking her again. Liked the hero but not the heroine. She was obsessed with being "forced" a bit too much for me. Especially when he did nothing to warrant such worry.

Verbal tug-of-wars and depictions of unfair patriarchal standards lend themselves to the prevalent theme of honor in a historical romance that does not shy away from questioning the unequal treatment of women.

Our heroine, Sophy, is the most outspoken of heroines on the problems with the patriarchy. Sophy carried the entire story on her witty and intelligent shoulders as she unabashedly navigated marriage to a man whose beliefs were the antithesis of her own. I enjoyed her confrontation of Julian and his frustratingly rigid beliefs on the role of women in society and in marriage. Her clothing quirks were endearing and I liked the way she viewed other women. I have to admit that Sophy stands out as one of my favorite heroines.

Julian was frustratingly arrogant and endearing at the same time. Julian was an alpha hero who was determined to never love again after the betrayals of his late wife. What I really enjoyed about the writing of his character was how Quick deftly revealed moments in which Julian is becoming more attached to Sophy and ultimately falling into love with his wife.

In my opinion, I did not think that the parallel plot involving Sophy's sister was necessary. I think that it detracted a bit from the more character focused plot developments.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and its characters. It seems few and far between that I come across great dialogue that is nuanced and doing a lot of the work. The amount that Sophy and Julian communicated was staggering, and I loved it!

I'm a huge Amanda Quick fan and somehow this one slipped past me. Anyhow, I loved it. I loved Sophia and Julian and their fraught path to love. I also enjoyed the story/mystery, no matter that I guessed it long before the truth was revealed. If you like good banter and character development, I feel like you can't go wrong with Quick, who seems to do both effortlessly.

I found parts of this book entertaining, but found the overall story to be pretty uneven. Also the MMC was prone to lecturing which would make the FMC lash out and then they’d be arguing AGAIN. The narrator did perhaps too good of a job with the arguments. 😅

Genre: Historical Romance

This book was actually quite a fantastic read, as long as one remembers the age it is set in.

The female lead is amazing. Bright and high spirited, her actions in the book are quite something. I would go into detail but I would spoil the book and that would be such a pity, she is so surprising and her actions keep being unexpected throughout the book.

The male lead... not so much. He is eager to reign over Sophy so as not to fall into step with his former wife. Dark, brooding and Byronesque, he is something of Mr Rochester of Jane Eyre.

However, the book has a strong atmospheric resemblance to Rebecca, which actually made me want to read this book- you have the dark manor, the prominent former wife whom Sophy can't seem to fully replace and a gothic air pervading most of the scenes.

What it lacked for me were more explicit love moments. I know they loved, loved each other but it dragged on up to the grand finale, which was beautiful but really not enough.

Overall, it has a strong classical feel, a heroine to die for and an intriguing mystery that keeps one on their toes, turning it into a very engaging read I really enjoyed.
