Pendragon #2

The Forever Queen

Rate this book
She will become legend…

Cara thought fate and the magic of the Fair Folk were done with her the night she defeated Morgana Le Fey and restored the barriers between this world and Avalon. She was wrong.

Lance is trapped in Avalon, and something more powerful and more dangerous than anything Cara has yet faced is trapped in this world. The only way to fix it is to break an ancient and powerful spell, but first Cara will have to figure out who or what cast it.

In the meantime the line between Cara’s two worlds is blurring. There are those in this world who know who she is, and have plans of their own for her future. Those plans involve treason.

Unfortunately those same people hold the key to breaking the spell and Cara will have to choose between Lance, her future, and saving the world.

I was lucky enough to beta read this one for Nicola. After the first book, I was really jonesing for some more Lancelot and Cara, and this book delivers. The incredible sweetness of their romance is still there, tainted by the bittersweet reality of their separation. I really felt for Cara as she endured the torment of that separation while questing for the solution to their problem. But no, it's not that simple at all. This book brings in some new plot elements and tidies up some old questions, all with a great dose of adventure King-Arthur-style. Funnily enough, though, some of my favorite scenes were the quieter ones, where Cara's quest takes her to interesting places, has her meet new characters with, of course, their own motives, and especially the beautiful, transportative description that drenches some of the scenes with a magical quality. I really felt like I was living in this books sometimes, while reading it. Great book, yet again.

So let me start this review like I do with most, there will be spoilers, but I will try to warn you before I place those. So let's get to it, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The Good: The book continued with our characters, Cara, Wyn, Perce, trying to reconcile the events from the first book. The book was good, probably more 4 1/2 stars, but not quite the 5 stars I gave the first book. We are introduced new characters that I like and some that I don't, but you're not supposed to. With Lance not being around for the main focus, the reader gets to learn and love Wyn and Perce more (which leads to some of the ugly, I'll explain in the spoiler part). Its a fast read that doesn't really introduce you to a lot of new Arthur Legend, but more Fey legend. I was more use to the writing style, (American Grammar vs European Grammar) so it was as distracting as it could be in the first book. But I still loved the Characters. I loved the knights and our modern day female Arthur.

The bad: Here is where the spoilers will start to seep into this review. So you are forewarned. I say bad, but don't take it as bad bad. My biggest complaint with this book (even more so than the first) is that everything went to fast. It was about 110 pages shorter than the first book and when reading, you missed those extra pages. The scenes moved into one another almost skipping along. I wanted more dwelling on things, more to the battles, just more. The order of Camelot was introduced, but never really flushed out. Cara finds herself in Lancelot's tomb staring at a carving of herself and this is not really dwelt upon. She goes though this massive quest to get the Ring of Dispel, but never really has need for it. It was as if the whole scene was written simple to find the tomb. It just felt like it became an after thought. Every quest is resolved way to easily. Which leads to my nitpicky bad. Our heroine and heros are beating and battered often ( I had this issue with the first book as well), but they don't really seem to suffer from these beatings the next day. I don't expect pages on top of pages of descriptions, but some about the state of our characters that goes deeper than hair and muscles.

The ugly: Now this is really spoiler time. BEWARE! I say ugly, but don't read to much in the word. Its more sad than ugly. I am probably the only one, but the ending left me utterly sad, a lingering sad that I can't just shake off. I know that our favorite couple end up together in Avalon, but so much was lost to make that happen. Which is where my love for Wyn comes in. He stays in the mortal world where the reader knows that he will die sooner than later. For some reason, this upset me, like loving someone with an incurable disease. The thought of losing Wyn hurt as much as the thought of losing Lance. Then there was Cara's dad. He is left without his wife and daughter, alone. And even though Perce comes with them, in a way he is left alone as well. It just seemed almost too much to give up for everyone. Others will read this as Cara and Lancelot being together forever and be happy. I think if I had been able to experience more of them as a happy couple in Avalon, maybe a chance at a family and so on, it wouldn't have felt so sad.

On a side note, I could see the potential of a Wyn and Sam series, just don't know if I would read that without Lance, Cara and Perce. I can't see one without the other.

So, finishing, and thanks for sticking so long, I like this author. I have enjoyed reading these two books.

Seriously. I cannot give this book enough praise. This series is a must for every one who loves the classic Arthurian tale of King Arthur and Sir Lancelot with an ingenious spin. Not to mention this cover - I mean really?! I try (as the old saying goes) not to judge a book by it's cover but seriously-- how completely beyond gorgeous is it? I know I did a cover reveal for it and gushed about it there but I feel it bears repeating (regushing? LOL)

I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of this book and man oh man...right in the feels from the get go.

Nicola S. Dorrington has continued the story of Cara and her Knights as she is comes face to face something worse than a vengeful family member and is forced to choose between her Destiny, the greater good, and her hearts desire. We are also introduced to another sect of the Arthurian world; one who may or may not have the most honorable intentions for our heroine.

I definitely thought Cara was resilient, going with the flow while she accepts her role in this new, bigger world she was thrust into in the The Last Knight, but this book solidifies how tough enduring, and strong she has become. Even though she has her Knights by her side, many of the adversities she encounters require her to face them alone. We also learn more about both Gwyn, Percy and Lance as well as connect some of Cara's life before Destiny changed it forever to her life now.

I loved that we get to see Cara grow to her full potential - from simply trying to blend into the walls to standing up for herself when it counts. She truly grows comfortable in her skin throughout this book which is, in my mind, a great attribute to have in a lead female character. Yes, she has help, but the help doesn't push her aside to do things or make decisions for her.

I have to say that the only thing I really missed from this book was Arthur helping to guide Cara the way he did in the first book. I don't, however, feel like it took away from the story because every hero/heroine has to learn to stand on their own two feet before they can truly become great.

A great book. I did not know that Arthur has any other children other than Mordred. This book and the first book are what I call "What if" books because these two books introduce the possibility that Arthur had other children (he did and I didn't know this), and if they had descendants that lived in our time. Both books bring out what might happen if Arthur's descendant had to deal with their magical ability since magic was all around during Arthur's time but not in our time. A well written set of books and I recommend them to everyone.

Fiery, organic, inventive, deliciously decadent writing. I'm already going through withdraw. I need more!

It was a good read but I didn't like it as much as book 1. I missed Lancelot. And Cara was too whiny at times. The ending was cute.

Beats the “2nd book isn’t as good as the first” rule to the dirt.

I laughed, I cried, I held my breath in anticipation. I didn’t want it to ever end, but then I couldn’t wait to see how it finished.

Great finish to the book. Can't wait to see what happens next. Easy read that I can stay engaged with and pick back up after a few days.

I read the first book, Last Knight, and enjoyed it. I also enjoyed this book as well. Not as much as the first one.

Cara was a good character but like all YA novels she lived for the boy even though she didn't want to be that girl she was. I was a little disheartened by that but I still enjoyed the story and the tie in's with King Author. That was well written, action packed at all turns so you're on the edge of your "book" keeping up.

Good series. There should be a book on Wyn or Percy, loved them.

It was a good sequel with a lot of twists and turns I didn't see coming. It was the perfect happy ending for Cara and Lance, but I didn't really like how things ended up with Wyn staying with Sam in the real world.. I felt sort of cheated with that ending but I came to terms with it.

Very Good!

I really did have so much fun reading this series. I guess I have always wanted to believe that there might just be a little bit of magic in our mundane world. I'm sure that's why I love fantasy. Car a discovers that not only is there magic in our world, but there is magic in her blood. She is the last in the Pendragon line, a direct descendant of King Arthur. Unfortunately that means she carries some heavy responsibilities. I loved going on this journey with her, and just like with fairy tales, I was glad for the happy ending.
