Binge

Rate this book
Pop-culture phenomenon, social rights advocate, and the most prominent LGBTQ+ voice on YouTube, Tyler Oakley brings you his first collection of witty, personal, and hilarious essays.

For someone who made a career out of over-sharing on the Internet, Tyler has a shocking number of personal mishaps and shenanigans to reveal in his first book: experiencing a legitimate rage blackout in a Cheesecake Factory; negotiating a tense standoff with a White House official; crashing a car in front of his entire high school, in an Arby’s uniform; projectile vomiting while bartering with a grandmother; and so much more. In Binge, Tyler delivers his best untold, hilariously side-splitting moments with the trademark flair that made him a star.

I'm veeerrryyy torn about this book... My biggest advice would probably be, don't look into this book unless you reeeally like Tyler Oakley. The writing in this book makes it seem like he's narrating this to a 12 year-old who's obsessed with him. It's not necessarily condescending, but he narrates his life very . . . I don't even know. Entitled. Along with that, the writing itself isn't the absolute best, and many times is a bit corny. He writes exactly how he speaks in his videos-- slang and puns and all-- and I can't help but think that this book would have been a more entertaining video than it was a book. The main reasons I bought this are because 1) I do think Tyler is a charming and silly person, and I wanted to support him, and 2) He kept selling this book as "stories i've never spoken about before," and that really intrigued me. I will say that this book revealed a lot about Tyler that I would have never guessed (such as his real first name isn't even Tyler, but you'll have to read the book to find that out), so it delivered what I expected. Even so, I can't help but feeling like this book just seemed like such Entitlement. The only reason it exists is because he's famous. If Tyler Oakley was some random person on the street, he wouldn't narrate a book like this or be able to sell millions of copies without a fanbase. Without his fame, this book would be completely irrelevant and probably boring. So that's why I'd only recommend this to people who are Tyler fans, and within that group of people, only those who are younger, since his writing is a bit lame and tailored toward younger people. (An afterthought: that's actually a weird way for me to promote this book because it was actually quite inappropriate at times, too. I guess just look up the first chapter of this on Amazon preview and decide for yourself how the narration sits with you.)

This was the first book I've picked up from a big Youtuber, and I don't expect i'll buy one again unless, again, it's a person that I REALLY support.

There are very few YouTube channels I follow and Tyler Oakley's isn't one of them. It's not because I don't like him though...I just never heard of him before. I know, where have I been hiding???

While waiting for my next library hold, I saw Binge was readily available via audio. It was categorized as humor so why wouldn't I read something mood lifting? I ended up really liking it...and really liking Tyler. From my reading experience, I can honestly say Tyler's book is enjoyable whether you are familiar with him or not. Regardless, I feel like I know him now and I might even consider checking out his channel, so if that was an underlying reason behind this book then it worked.

Tyler writes with substance as well as plenty of humor. He discusses his experiences with eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, abusive relationships, coming out to a religious parent, advocacy, and his slow rise to fame in the world of social media. Tyler shared that he wrote Binge with the wish to demonstrate "the value of taking chances, pushing beyond our comfort levels, dusting ourselves off after our inevitable humiliations, and remaining open to the life and feelings and possibilities that are happening while we are busy either chasing phantoms of success or trying to outrun our fears." Personally, I think he succeeded.

The audiobook version of Binge was a fun experience for me. Tyler self-narrated and spoke directly to the listener, even letting the reader know if there was a screenshot or something they were visually missing in which case he tried to summarize/describe it the best he could. The audio was well-done in my opinion and I would recommend it. Check it out!

My favorite quotes:
"A good mom is supportive of you but the best moms are supportive of your growth. Even when it doesn't seem like they're on your side, great mothers are on the side of your becoming a better person and you'll be so much better off in the long run. So pull out your flip phone and text a quick thank you to your mom. She has your best interest at heart even if you are sometimes a dick."

Note: So who is Tyler Oakley? He is a strong presence on YouTube and all of the social media outlets. At the time of this review, he has 7,737,335 YouTube subscribers, 5.3m Instagram followers, 4.75M Twitter followers, 2,811,812 Facebook likes, and an impressive number of Snapchat and Tumblr fans. He has this book (obviously) as well as an upcoming documentary titled Snervous set to release December 2015. After some research, I learned that Tyler is not only a social media obsession but he is also an advocate for LGBT rights and The Trevor Project, an organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth ages 13-24. I have to admit, I find it impressive that Tyler uses his popularity and influence to do good. Keep up the good work Tyler!

Tyler is unwavering in his honesty and his truth. A few stories were a bit much for me (I'm old) but overall I really enjoyed this book. Laughed and smiled a lot. If you are a Tyler fan, this is definite must read!

The rectum is a grand thing.

I'm not a fan of Tyler and I'm also not a hater. I've heard of him, yes, but I never followed him on social media because:

1. I don't have twitter because who am I going to tweet and what am I going to say?

I'm off to @Starbucks, guys! #frappe #latte

Please. I'd rather dieeee.

description

and 2. I mostly watch funny cats in youtube, and Tyler doesn't have those.

But I bought his book and decided to read it because if I can buy pervy books, why not buy funny books like this?

So I read it and I gotta say, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FUNNY AND REAL. Basically, Tyler talks about himself and usually, I find that annoying to a person but weirdly, I like him because he is just so unapologetically proud of his self and I admire that to a person.

description

And did I mention his words of wisdom is so cute?

“Listen, your asshole is precious. It deserves to be shown love, and that's all I'm doing. Let me live. Let your asshole live.”

description

No person, no matter how important society deems their relationship to you, has the right to denounce you for who you are.”

description

“This is why homophobia is a terrible evil: it disguises itself as concern while it is inherently hate.”

description

So excuse me if I fangirl with this book because there are really just some moments in it that I really loved. I love the way Tyler talks about love, relationships, his family, anxiety, insecurity and violence. I like the way he didn't make himself just the victim. He acknowledges he has some faults in it and I think that's wonderful.

So, Binge + Me= Wonderful moments.

2.5 - pretty average, but enjoyable

This was a sweet, fun read. You can definitely identify Tyler's sass, and that makes it really fun, but sometimes he tries to hard to be insightful on life even though he is still on his 20's.

It was relatively interesting how I came by this book: my students were involved in a biography unit and I kept hearing Tyler Oakley's name come up and seeing his book carried about. When I asked a few kids about it, they raved about him. (There are fewer ways to make me feel old and not nearly as cool as I used to be than to start talking about some YouTube sensation that I have never seen or heard of .. [what is the point of YouTube anyway?!]).

Anyway, I knew I needed to acquire this book to figure out what all the fuss was about. After all, my students getting excited about a biography is too good to be true!

Imagine my surprise when I received Oakley's book in the mail and I happened upon a sentence as I was casually flipping through the book that made me immediately decide that I had to read this myself AND find him on YouTube, stat.

What I found on YouTube was engaging, humorous, and REAL! Watching him was fun and I wanted in on that fun -- (it helped that the video I watched was him interacting with Kristen Bell, one of my favorite people on Earth). Needless to say, the same can be mentioned about his book. I will err on the side of Oakley being a little too honest but his book makes you want to live vicariously through his life and his experiences (for the most part). Walking away, if nothing else, I wanted him as a friend or to at least find a friend like him!

Having gone from a person whom I had never even heard of before, to watching some videos that he did and reading his autobiography and [mostly] loving it, I would say that [Mathew] Tyler Oakley is quite captivating and his book is worth the read.

I really enjoyed learning more about Tyler! He is one of my favorite Youtubers! I definitely recommend this if you watch his videos or even if you don't he definitely talks about some important stuff in here. It's a great mixture of seriousness and humor and he writes really well! It was my first time reading a memoir and I really enjoyed it!

I'm usually not really interested in reading books written by youtubers but I found this book at a used book store and thought I'd give it a try. I used to absolutely love Tyler's youtube videos and even though I wasn't interested in the ones he's uploaded for the past year, I still think he's an amazing person with a great character! After finishing this book I can now say that I definitely didn't regret buying it and would've even payed the full price for it. It's a lovely compilation of interesting and very entertaining stories about Tyler's life and this book made me laugh a lot! I loved it!

Genre:
Nonfiction + Memoir

If you like Tyler Oakley then you should read his memoir. His words have his personality. That lively, vibrant and full of color personality can be seen right from the cover and also inside the book. Tyler tells us about his childhood, family, coming out story, his career prior to Youtube and his Youtube career.

This was a fun read. I did not know who Oakley was two years ago. They say that his personality used to be a little different a few years ago and so was his Youtube channel. Don't know about that, all I can say that Tyler is a fun person to watch and reading about him felt as enjoyable experience as watching him.

Tyler Oakley’s debut memoir Binge brings readers behind the camera of his popular YouTube videos. We learn about his childhood, his rankings of Disney Prince hottness, and the wild ride he’s had since hitting Youtube fame– and more! The chapters of Binge could all stand on their own as essays, but are woven together over the course of the book to give readers the perfect mix of raw honesty and hilarious absurdity.

I am in awe at the impressive levels of internal and external reflections with which Oakley approaches his life. Instead of simply telling his story, he truly pulls the reader in, diving into the intimidating nature of vulnerability and reflects on dark topics, such as his experiences with an eating disorder and physical abuse. He outwardly acknowledges the unique platform he has grown and states his goal of using it to bring awareness to various topics and help his (primarily teen) audience members who are struggling.

On a more technical note, Oakley impeccably translates his charismatic, onversatonal tone from his videos to this book. I felt as though I could hear him speaking the words I was writing on the page!

Hands down, five stars. An incredible memoir and reflection of the newfound internet culture and its resulting fame.

2/5 crappy stars.

Listened to via Scribd!

I used to watch Tyler Oakley's channel what feels like a million years ago.
Unlilke some YouTubers who have grown with their audience, Tyler Oakley definitely did not.
That coupled with his stupid tweets a couple of years ago was probably a winning combination in his popularity declining.

This was an OK read.

It was interesting to hear his coming out story and his experience with eating disorders.
I think that his lack of sense of humour really just had me bored; I guess when you're 16 you'd love it (as i did), but 10 years later, not so much.

I guess I should mention that I love Youtube (and the internet as a whole). I follow Book channels, Art channels, Spirituality, Business, Movies and I think a lot of people will agree - it's far better than watching the TV! But apart from the occasional PewdiePie video, I don't really know much about the celebrities on the network.

Do you need to be a Tyler Oakley fan in order to enjoy his book?
Short answer - No. I've only seen a couple of his videos prior to reading his book (and a few more after finishing it).

Why did I read it? I was curious, I wanted to understand the hype and the pop culture of the younger generation.

Was it phenomenally amazing? - Ummmm....not for me, but we all have our own preferences.

Anyways, Binge is a funny, heart-warming and entertaining read. I wasn't mind-blown by it, but I did relate to Tyler and I did feel for him in almost every story. Check it out if you are a fan of his or if you're just curious about the current trends in the Youtube community. The book also offers a great deal of information about what it takes to be successful Youtuber and let me tell you - I'll go mad after only a week. If people like Tyler and Pewdiepie can go through such a torture every day, than they deserve every bit of their fame and money.

This is weird because not only am i totally not a tyler oakley fan (what does he even do?? he only ever puts up Q&As??) but i don't like books written by youtubers nor do i want to support that. You're in your mid twenties and you wrote a memoir...you're not even near being done with life. But i found the audiobook free on youtube and I can't pass up on audiobooks read by the author.

1) I naturally demote any memoir that contains stupid lists that are the equivalent of anime filler episodes. We know you don't have enough content to fill a book *insert youtuber here*, but lists are so obviously filler.

2) I actually was mostly entertained by this which is amazing considering I seriously don't enjoy Tyler Oakley. But he had some good stories in here and he read the stories in a way that kept me interested.

3) Although i'd put this on par with mindy kaling's audiobook, it still seemed like one of those things that was written just for the money and that's why I'm giving it a 3.5/5

If you’ve been following me on Instagram or Twitter then you know i’ve been in a really depressing book slump for the past few months so i’ve decided to listen to Tyler Oakley’s new book Binge, narrated by the queen himself. Saying I loved it is definitely an understatement. It was phenomenal! Tyler, you’ve not only booted my sad emotions to being more happier and positive, but i’m also considering buying your book too, just to have in case i want to read it again.

“I aggressively run into things, back up into things, have no depth perception, often forget which buttons and knobs do what, and am easily distracted. But enough about my sex life! Back to my driving skills!”

Let me say, I’ve been watching Tyler’s videos for a while, maybe four years, I can’t exactly pin point it but probably 3-4. I remember tweeting “who is tyler oakley?” because I was in the One Direction fandom or something, and he was all over the fandom news, and he FAVED IT! I laughed, and didn’t realize that I would soon be in love with that adorable cupcake.

But really, Who is Tyler Oakley? Sure, his life mainly consists on the internet, but what do we know about his personal life? Not a whole life, once you think about it. In this Memior Binge, we get a huge look into Matthew’s life, and who he really is, and what made him who he is today!

“Tyler Oakley isn’t my real name.”

binge-is-finally-here-01Since I listened to the book on Audible, I’ll rate the performance… can I give it a 100 out of 100 or no? Okay, 5/5 stars! It’s was such a great book, It felt as though Tyler himself was talking directly to me. I felt so involved that I didn’t want to stop listening to it. You get to see the personal and almost secret side of Matthew Tyler Oakley.

“No person, no matter how important society deems their relationship to you, has the right to denounce you for who you are.”

Not only was this book hilarious, but it was also inspiring and important. Tyler talks about his struggles with an eating disorder, and about his struggle about coming out and how it was hard for his dad to accept it, and the struggles of dating someone who hasn’t accepted themselves. Life isn’t perfect, especially for the adorable and internationally known internet star Tyler Oakley. He lets it all out, literally. I about died when he was talking about driving just to hook up with this guy.. I’m actually cracking up thinking back on it. The audio book is 10 times better than the book, simply because you get to hear Tyler himself, and it’s the best thing ever. His voice expresses everything, and it just connects you with the book in a way you can’t with the book. So, get both!

I also want to thank Tyler for the truth he has shown in this book, he’s such a brave guy putting all this out in the open, and I hope e knows this book is a masterpiece, and it’s definitely helped me with so much. Not only did it cheer me up, but it helped me see things much clearer. Also, can we please appreciate bi-curious people because they do exist, thanks! I feel like that, among other things, is something that stuck out most, his appreciation for the LGBTQ+ community, and how he’s really helping everyone in that community with this book.

“This is why homophobia is a terrible evil: it disguises itself as concern while it is inherently hate.”

I’m not even sure what I was expecting out of this, but it definitely exceeded my expectations by a landslide, I think this made me love Tyler even more! He’s such a unique person, and we all need to enjoy his admirable personality, and just give this memoir a chance. If you barely know anything about Tyler, then i’m pretty sure you would still enjoy the humor and honesty from this book, there’s no doubt you won’t laugh. How can you not appreciate Tyler for speaking out about what he’s dealt with, struggled deeply with, and tried to keep in the past. He’s so real, and he’s so proud of himself that I greatly admire that, and that’s one of the reasons this memoir was so inspiring, because Tyler has inspired me.

Okay, I will admit a lot of weird shit is discussed in this book, in between the deep personal topics, but that’s Tyler, that’s what to expect form him, you just… go along with it.

“Binge on giving, in all senses. Binge on indulging. We’re told every day from an early age that moderation is key. Count your calories, wait a while before you tell someone you love them, and remember that balance is the path to happiness. While all of those are great in theory, does a lesson taught from someone else’s mistakes resonate just as deeply as the ones you learn yourself? When you binge, you find your own boundaries.”

Anyways, If you’re a fan of Tyler Oakley, then why haven’t you read/listened to it yet? You so need to, I recommend the audio if you can, you’ll thank me later. I apologize if this review is so short, I could;t put my thoughts and emotions in any coherent sentences, I just really enjoyed this and I recommend it.

I read this book for the BookTubeAThon 2017 (Challenge #3: Read about a character that is very different from you)

"When life throws a wrench in your plans, catch it and build an IKEA bookshelf."

Tyler seriously cannot disappoint me!

When this book was announced and, later, when it actually came out in print, I had my mind set on getting a physical copy of it. And then other things came between me and actually getting the damn book. So I decided to listen to it as an audio book instead.

I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!

Tyler reads this book himself - and adds comments, questions and other things just for the listeners. Which does make this audio book feel like you're sitting in the same room as him, just listening to him telling his stories. Because, comments and questions and other things are sweet and all, but they do not measure up to the stories.

I didn't start actively following Tyler Oakley until about three years ago, around the time when I was doing my last semester at university. Sure, I knew who he was and had watched a few of his videos prior to that, but that was when I actually subscribed and started watching everything he uploaded.

However, videos lasting a few minutes can only tell so much. In this book, Tyler tells longer stories, more intricate ones, ones that he has sometimes only mentioned in passing but never delved into properly, or ones he has not touched at all. It's pure and real, funny and sad, and it doesn't take roundabout routes to point out the truth.

Two words; read it. Read this book. Right now!

I am more of a casual Tyler Oakley fan. I watch his videos from time to time, I enjoy them most of the time but I can't say I adooooooore him.

Having said that, I really really really liked this book. I think a big part in me liking it so much is the fact that I actually listened to it. And I think that is the best way to experience this "story". Tyler narrates it of course and that's what made it for me. It feels just like listening to one of his videos: it's fun and energetic, sometimes emotional and always engaging. There wasn't a single moment when I felt bored or annoyed.
The fact that he is really good at talking about himself and his life shouldn't be surprising seeing as he made an actual career out of it.

In the end, I can't say I agree with everything he says/does etc. but that doesn't really matter. This isn't about agreeing with him, it's about appreciating his work and in my opinion he did a very very good job.

This was an amazing book. It was hilarious, funny and yet it still managed to make me cry. I feel a lot closer to Tyler now than ever imaginable and this is one of the best Youtuber books I've read - although I only want to ever read a selective few. I would recommend this to anyone, it's like all of his videos in a book.

I loved it so much and I recommend it to anyone who sees this review - please pick it up!

I've loved Tyler ever since I saw one of his videos on Youtube. There's just something so incredibly captivating about him ... he's adorable, funny and besides that he's also very inspiring and creative. This book proves just as much - he shares intimate stories with his readers/viewers and talks openly about the things he learned in life. His school time, relationships, casual hook-ups, his internet presence, different jobs he's had over the years and so much more.

I have to admit, I never read a biography before nor am I really into nonfiction books but this one might change my opinion about them - especially biographies always seemed very boring to me. This one definitely wasn't and I think what made me love this book so much is that you could totally see/feel/read that this was Tyler Oakley. I mean, everything in this book just screams his name and didn't feel fake or like it's written by someone else. If it was - which I doubt, really - they did a great job. I just felt so connected to him and even could relate to a few things he told us about. It gives (me) hope and shows that even "failures" can lead to something so much better.

The readers got a really deep insight into his life - present and past - and to see that he's just as normal as everyone else actually makes him even more likable. He's been through a lot but still managed to become a happy person and to live life to its fullest. Honestly, I'd love to have a friend like Tyler Oakley ... I mean, who wouldn't? This guy's great and I love him! Also, we can definitely learn a few things from him ... I think I certainly did.

Fact is, Tyler is an amazing human being and I'm sure with the topics he talks about and all the things he's shared so far, he's helped more than one person. No matter if it is to make them smile, actually learn something or help them through a hard time of their lives - Tyler is inspiring, admirable, intelligent and just an overall interesting person. I'm really glad I read Binge & personally, I think, if you like his Youtube videos or even are just curious/interested in him as a person, you'd surely enjoy this book - it's definitely worth a read!

I would say this book is primarily for fans of Tyler Oakley. The format isn't anything new (standard celebrity memoir style featuring vignettes and lists) and the writing isn't groundbreaking. However, as a longtime fan, I really enjoyed the read! I went into it expecting a Tyler vlog in book form, but it's so much more emotional and relatable and interesting than that (but don't worry, there are still lots of funny parts too). Also, the book is a huge reminder that even if you've followed someone's entire social media presence, you still really don't know anything about them. So yeah, if you're a fan of Tyler Oakley, definitely pick it up.

When I found out that Tyler Oakley was publishing a book, I was really excited about it and interested to read more about him. I love his videos and his presence in #TeamInternet. I was really excited to see that my local library had ordered some copies, giving me a chance to read this.

Overall, I liked it. Some parts were a bit boring and felt like they were dragging on and on but I did like most of his stories and messages that he had to express. However, I feel like only people who really love Tyler Oakley will want to read this. If you are meh about him or are just curious about it, maybe try it but I am not sure you're going to love it. If you are a die-hard fan, you'll love this one.

With that said, I am glad I read this. It felt as if I was watching a video of his, but reading it.

Eh. Overall it was just eh.
I would have given it three and a half stars if he hadn't kept insulting my religion over and over and over. Like, bro, clearly you don't understand it and that's fine, but don't take your misunderstandings and frustrations out on the entirety of Catholicism. That's the same principle of hating all Muslims because of 9/11. Not cool.
