Denton Little #2

Denton Little's Still Not Dead

Rate this book
You only live once—unless you're Denton Little!

This amazingly funny YA novel is for fans of John Green, Andrew Smith, and Matthew Quick

The good Denton Little has lived through his deathdate. Yay! The bad He's being chased by the DIA (Death Investigation Agency), he can never see his family again, and he may now die any time. Huh. Cheating death isn't quite as awesome as Denton would have thought...
Lance Rubin's debut novel, Denton Little's Deathdate, showed readers just how funny and poignant imminent death could be. Now in this sequel, he takes on the big questions about life. How do we cope, knowing we could die at any time? Would you save someone from dying even if they were a horrible person? Is it wrong to kiss the girl your best friend is crushing on if she's really into you instead?  What if she's wearing bacon lip gloss?

Hi, I'm Lance Rubin.

I wrote the Denton Little series and Crying Laughing. My solo MG debut, Zed Moonstein Makes a Friend, comes out this August 2025, and my new YA novel, 16 Forever, comes out in January 2026.

I also co-wrote The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek with Good Mythical Morning's Rhett & Link, Monster Club: Monsters Take Manhattan with filmmakers Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel, and the musical Broadway Bounty Hunter with Be More Chill's Joe Iconis & Jason SweetTooth Williams.

I'm originally from Matawan, New Jersey. I went to Brown University, and now I live in Brooklyn with my family.

Before I became an author, I was primarily an actor. "Anything I'd recognize you from?" you might ask. Probably not, unless you watched the short-lived NBC hospital show Mercy, in which I guest-starred as a patient with a naked sleepwalking problem.

I love Back to the Future, empathy, the New York Knicks, the Heavyweight podcast, and the Before Sunrise Trilogy.

Thanks for reading. Reach out and say hi!

Strange, cringey, hilarious, wonderful, fun. Loved being back with Denton and Paolo (mostly Paolo <3). It got a little over-the-top at times but it was still great.

“Denton Little’s Still Not Dead” is a hilarious follow-up to last year’s “Denton Little’s Deathdate.” It features all of the fun of the original with a heaping dose of existentialism. This series is definitely for a certain set of readers. The science of the world is explained a little, but a suspension of disbelief is a requirement. It won’t make you smarter, but it will definitely make you laugh. Highly recommended for the weird readers among us (which includes yours truly).

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

FINALLY! More Denton! It seems like I have been waiting forever for this sequel and IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Denton has found his birth mom (yeah, the one he thought was dead) and they are running from the DIA. There was a lot going on with the plot and I loved it. There was so much action and so much of Denton running for his life. I also appreciated the awkwardness between Denton and his birth mom and how he still thought of his stepmom as "Mom." I thought that was so realistic. There was also more of Paolo. Seriously, could there friendship be any more awesome? They are your typical teenage boys and there was still so much snark and sarcasm and witty banter and I loved all of it.

This book also still discussed the big questions about death, like whether people should be forced to know their death dates or whether people should even know at all. I think that if it were possible to know my death date ahead of time, I wouldn't want to know. And this book also deals with Denton trying to save Paolo from his death date. It's a race against the clock and I was rooting for him to figure out a way to outsmart it.

It was AWESOME that romance was not a huge subplot of the book. Yeah, there were a few romance scenes, but it never took over the book and there was none of that stupid insta-love. I was rooting for Denton and Veronica, but I thought their relationship was realistic and well-done, especially considering the fact that they are both teenagers, for crying out loud.

This book was funny and touching and full of wacky adventures and if you loved the first one, you will love this one as well!

Sì, Mamma Little è viva.
Sorpresa!

happy birthday, denton little’s still not dead. glad you made it here.

First of all, you’ll probably want to know what I thought of book one, Denton Little’s Deathdate. And if you don’t feel like reading the whole review, I can sum it up with the first sentence: “I. FREAKIN. LOVED. THIS. BOOK.” Lance Rubin made me laugh about death and the awkwardness of being a teenager knowing they are going to die, but seriously, it just worked.

SPOILER ALERT: Denton didn’t die, i.e. the title of this book.

BIGGER SPOILER ALERT: In order to talk about this book, I’ve got to talk about that elephant in the room… aka the non-death thing. So, tread carefully, my friends.

So, when Random House reached out to me about Denton Little’s Still Not Dead, I freaked out. Mostly, because I really have been wanting to know just what happens to Denton. How he managed to live and why he ended up where he did, because *SHOCKER* we were left dangling on a very precarious cliff.

In the first book, Lance Rubin had readers face the question of their own mortality… What do you do when death is literally staring you in the face – and you’re watching the clock tick down. How do you react? In this book, however, Rubin takes it one step further in exploring what it means to not know when death will come and learning to live with that great unknown. The dichotomy of the two stories is something that really stretches your brain, while still managing to make you guffaw and laugh a whole lot.

While book two was a different animal from the first, I feel like the humor and the quirky spark that made me love book one was still there. This world that seemingly started out almost contemporary definitely went the way of a slightly altered parallel universe, but the science fiction didn’t take away from the reality of it all. Denton is very real, remains a fully-realized character with a lot to offer readers in the way of exploring their own mortality and life.

A lot of the things I said in my first review apply here: the relationship between Dento and Paolo was one of my favorite parts of Deathdate, so I’m glad their antics lived to tell the tale again. Some parts of the book were over the top, and Denton had a lot more to swallow in this one, but it all just worked.

OH, and the cover design changes – totally rad. Sometimes a design change can be bad news for a book series, but I think this one really gets the flavor of these books and brings a more whimsical, kitschy design. I know based on the cover alone, I’d be more willing to pick it up. I mean, a kid playing chess with a skeleton… sign me up.

This is definitely the kind of sci-fi series I’d recommend to friends who don’t think they like sci-fi. And it’s definitely the kind of book you’d want to read after a serious book hangover or book depression. Because, while the topics were heavy, Rubin just struck gold by telling it in a way that was still light-hearted and relatable.

ALSO, he did his own audiobook narration, so I’m definitely excited to check that out. I always love when authors have the ability to narrate their own books. If they’ve got the acting chops, it comes out SO authentic, because who knows the characters better than the author?

All in all, this is a resounding YES from me!

I loved this book. I really really didn't want it to end! I loved the relationship between Denton and Paolo, and their banter and schemes are just hilarious. I also really enjoyed the book's complexity and how it wasn't afraid to question the "good side" and call out
Denton and Paolo made some really dumb decisions and at certain points, I wanted to slap some sense into them. But both characters made up for their flaws with their passion and adorableness.
The ending tied all of my thoughts and questions up into a perfect bow, while still leaving room for the imagination and dialogue. I wanted there to be an epilogue so I could see how their actions impacted generations to come.

...continua

ARC/Fantasy/YA: The book has not come out yet, so I will try not spoil the book.

I was looking so, so forward to reading this sequel to Denton Little's death ordeal, which, by the way, you need to read the first book to understand a lot of what is going on in this one. I loved the first book. Denton's life in suburbia was hysterical. I thought the author was the next Christopher Moore.

I was disappointed. I was home sick from work and thought this would cheer me up after the hectic holidays. The first hundred pages are Denton on the run with dialogue that is far from funny banter. I went with the fantasy world of deathdates and coincidences in the first book. In this book, Denton is out of his realm and what worked in the first book, didn't work for me in New York City. I liked his bio-mom less and less. I will give the author points for ending this book and not continuing the series.

Denton's story took such a sharp turn at the end of the last book, and it continued in this one. There was a lot more action and peril in the sequel. But don't worry, Denton was funny. His bromance with Paolo continued to be one of my favorite things in the book, and Denton was still trying to determine if it was better to know when you would expire or if it was better to not know. I was hoping for one thing to happen by the end of the book, but it wasn't a huge disappointment that it didn't.

And you know what? This book has me believing that a dystopian book can be fun.

Definitely one of my most highly-anticipated books for a while now! It has a lot more action than Denton Little's Deathdate, but the characters are entertaining and the plot never stalls. Lots of interesting existential questions in this one too!

Hilarious adventure to unassassinate the world! Super unique plot, lead by 2 comedic bros. Denton’s internal dialogues creates the funniest scenes out of the harshest situations. The two books can definitely become a movie. Comedy to seriousness level is on par with Harold and Kumar.

When I first picked up this book, I was a little confused because I didn’t read the first one. But after I started to figure things out, I got the flow and was entertained with the comedy, action, and enjoyed all of the relationships between Denton and all of the other main characters.
So, I rated it a ⅘ because I enjoyed it and there is not much to complain about. I really enjoyed the humor and it got me attached to the book early on with the intriguing introduction.
The comedy was really enjoyable in my eyes. The adds small jokes in there and it was a good laugh. And, with the enjoyable entry, it starts off with some comedy right off the bat. So, for example Denton starts off by saying, “Am I dead?” (Denton 3). Like, he should know whether or not he is. Then, his mom smiles and says, “No.” (Denton 3). When I saw that right away, I knew I was in for a ride. These kind of books always have good storylines and endings.
Another thing that I liked was the good relationships. With his stepmom that he just calls Mom, she finds it very humorous when Denton is seriously questioning whether or not he is alive. But, when things get serious, she always finds a way to help out with everything and I think that is really good. Like on page 7, one paragraph goes like, “‘Go for it,’ I say. ‘The more utensils, the merrier.’ I pick up the fork and start shoveling noodles into my mouth as my mom digs around the tiny, uninviting kitchen, aggressively crumpling various paper bags in her search for chopsticks” (Denton 7). They both go through great effort to try to help their situation that they are in to get better. And, with Paolo, they are very good friends. It is kind of like the standard teenage friendship that you see everywhere. I found that really relatable and it made it more satisfying to read.
The third and final thing that made me enjoy this book and that made it easy to read was all of the action. They ran into problem after problem, trying to run away from the people that are trying to kill Denton. He comes into lots of close calls as they are right behind him the whole book. It is a constant worry and it keeps you on the edge of your seen. It keeps you always wondering what's going to happen next. It starts off in action, and just by that, you can see then and there that he was playing with death, and there was going to be nonstop action throughout the whole book. Just in chapter two, one of the first paragraph says, “I peer around at blank walls, and the lunacy of last night comes rushing back to me. Oh right, I’m hiding from the US government in my dead mom’s apartment” (Denton 20). In chapter 2, there was already lots of action before then, and the situation that he is in is very, very tense.
I really enjoyed watching the humorous, satisfying storyline that kept me on the edge of my seat. I rated it ⅘ because it wasn’t my favorite book, but it definitely deserves a good rating for all the effort that was put towards it. There is not much to complain about the I think that it was one of the better books that I have read in a while.

Romance and Fantasy for Cosmopolitan Girls

Attenzione Attenzione DENTON LITTLE è vivo. Ripeto DENTON LITTLE è ancora vivo!

Buona lettura!

This one's a 2 and a half stars, but, once again, I've rounded up (one of my friends said that and I just loved how it sounded. I'm sorry I couldn't find that review again, or I would've definitely given her/him credit).

Honestly, a little less 'WOOSH' than I was expecting. I don't know, after the first book, my heart was soaring and dipping and I just couldn't wait for the next one. Probably because of the long wait, I built up how wonderful it's going to be. And it obviously didn't match those expectations.

But if I look at it from a more objective point, this is a good book. Humourous (the humour definitely lived up to my bloated expectations), teenage angst(embarrassingly accurate), romance (cringe-worthy in its spot on real-life accuracy), and family dynamics (also quite different from the average novel's depiction of a not-so-perfect family).

I must say- me being a firm believer in happy, perfect endings with no loose ends left hanging- the ending pricked my heart. While I have no choice but to admit that it is alarmingly realistic in it's imperfect happiness, realistic isn't something that I usually look for in a book. *shrug* but that's me.

Soo..I'd recommend this one for anyone who's looking for lots of humour, but with some substance added to it as well. The romance is much like you would expect from the life of an average-in-attractiveness teenage boy. Topsy turvy, that is(not in a bad way). Also if you are one who prefers correct portrayals of real life situations etcetera, this one's definitely for you.

P.S: If you've read this please answer message me and answer this:

Denton's dad was the one who created the virus and he knew Denton's mom Cheryl was still alive. Stepmom Raquel was out of the loop on all this.

Cheryl claimed she wanted people to live free of mandatory deathdates and stick it to the pharmaceutical companies making bank off the required tests. But mostly she just wanted to live, and her efforts were being funded by the life insurance companies. She ended up dying unexpectedly of a heart attack on the subway. She was close with her first son Felix (he kept in contact with her after her deathdate and disappearance, always visiting her apartment) but she was distant with Denton for the most part.

Denton was forced to hide out at Cheryl's place in Brooklyn and give frequent saliva, hair, and blood samples for her continued work. Plus lots of Denton being chased by Paolo's mom and other DIA agents. Felt like a boring filler middle book of a trilogy.

Fortunately, it seems this story concluded with this second installment. Denton's dad had a revised superstrain of the virus locked up in a safe and gave it to Denton so he could save Paolo. Then they gave a speech at graduation (Paolo's now former deathday) in front of several news cameras and Paolo passed on the virus (via saliva/kissing) to several of their classmates.

Veronica admitted she really does have a thing for Denton but didn't want to be in a committed labeled relationship, because she "has issues" (no further explanation given). This after another odd intimate scene involving the word "sticky" (ew) and Denton wondering afterward if it really happened.

Truth be told, I was disappointed with this sequel to Denton Little's Deathdate. I listened to an audio edition of the first book, and was amused by Denton and his best friend Paolo, and the circumstances of preparing for their anticipated deaths, but reading the print version of the second book left me feeling flat.

The story picks up after Denton has mysteriously outlived his assigned death date, and meets his bio mom that he thought died on the day of his birth. A conspiracy is under foot, with the government wanting to stop scientists from finding a vaccine that would prevent the population from knowing when they will die in the future. Denton is confused and upset, and tries to escape back home to his father, step mom and friends with government agents in pursuit.

The usual chaos and raunchy humor follow, but it just seemed forced this time around. One thing that did grow on me, was that Denton had a close relationship with his stepmom and wanted to see her again. I am not a fan of insta-love in romance books, so it actually was refreshing and truthful that he didn't instantly love his bio mom upon first meeting her. While this book was a fine conclusion to Denton's story, it didn't appeal to me as much as the first, but I am still interested in reading future books by Lance Rubin. * 3.5/5 stars

When I first starting reading this book, I was like huh? I did not like it, I wanted to put it down. After a couple of chapters though, I started getting into it. Then after a few more, I was totally into it and glad that I did not put it down.

I did not read the first book in the series and I think that's why it took me a little while to get into it. After I did get into it, I was cracking up. Denton's friend, Paolo and his language was crazy. He was always using the wrong words and his nicknames were hilarious.

Because Denton has this virus inside of him that can take away anyone's deathdate, he has no idea who he can trust. Everyone is out to get him to either kill him or use him. His adventures are also pretty crazy.

I found this book to be highly entertaining and enjoyable. While I did receive this book very close to the deadline, the day before, I was very glad that I got the chance to read it. If there is another in the series, I look forward to reading the further adventures of Denton Little.

Thanks to Random House/Knopf Books for approving my request and to Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

(Jul) I loved Denton's world in the first book. The concept of knowing your death date from the time you are born is intriguing. Denton is a great kid - he's smart, he's funny, he's insecure, he loves his family, he lusts after his bff's sister Veronica, and his bff Paolo is the only character who is more fun than Denton. At the end of the first book Denton does not die on his death date (sorry if you think this is a spoiler, but honestly, if you look at the title it pretty much gives that away!).

It is actually kind of hard to write a review for this w/o giving it all away. So suffice it to say I liked this. I didn't love it and found the beginning few chapters a bit draggy. But once the storyline and action picked up, it was a wild ride once again. Plus, being inside Denton's head and seeing Paolo drunk...all worth it!! Great ending.

This was definitely a funny book, but I had sort of mixed feeling about it. While I did laugh out loud a lot, this book was way over the top. I guess I kind of expected it, with how the first book ended, but I dunno. Also, Denton felt a little...different?

I don't know. Part of the reason I enjoyed the first one so much was because even though it was kind of a weird sci-fi concept, the normal everyday high school life was funny and enjoyable. So I guess since this one was all government conspiracy and weird mom stuff I just didn't connect to it as much.

Insonna, in Deathdate era "l'amore" era messo in modo divertente.
