4.5 'paranormal-action-packed' stars

I'm no stranger to Cynthia Eden's romantic suspense, but this is my first venture into her paranormal romance. Before this I didn't even know she had already wrote 3 books for Purgatory series. I'm judging Deal with the Devil purely as a standalone since I didn't read the previous books. But I assure you, it works like a charm. Or maybe even better.

Despite having no experience with the Purgatory world, I never felt an ounce of confusion from the beginning. Maybe reading up the previous book blurbs and some reviews did help to lay down some ground work for me. Or maybe I had a lot of experience with paranormal romance filled with vampires, shapeshifters and etc. The only new paranormal species I came across here is the djinn. Woah! What's up with all these twisted wish coming true. Creepy.

Deal with the Devil features the hero, Eric Pate, the Director of the PARA Unit, who is an ice cold, cunning and manipulative leader. What others didn't know is under his controlled and unemotional exterior, lies a dormant beast awaiting to be unleashed.

Ella Lancester is a prisoner that had been saved by the PARA Unit in the previous book. Her true identity and power is a mystery that Eric wanted to crack. But Ella is done being a prisoner again, she didn't want to be contain and put under the microscope anymore.

I'm fascinated with Eric from the get go. I can't wait to know what kind of beast he truly is because it seems like he is not a vampire nor a shapeshifter, but something even more fearsome. He instilled a great sense of authority towards his people and always in controlled of every situation and I can't wait to see him losing his control and all hell to break lose. By the way, the sidekick, Connor totally cracked me up. Eric is talk-when-needed kind of man, while Connor simply talked too much.

Ella's past was heartbreaking. I don't want to give away her true nature, but this woman had been burnt by love and had been awaiting for her true mate for century. She had even given up hope that she will find another of her kind. And now she thinks Eric is the one she had been waiting for. Is he? The thing with PNR is that I felt totally okay with all the primal insta-lust, I even crave it. When these two are together, their chemistry is combustible. Fireworks.

"I need you to stay." He caught her hand in his and lifted it to his chest. Eric put her hand over his heart. "It beats differently when you're near me."

Let's talked about the villain. He is an unknown entity and someone from Ella's past. He wants her back and will stop at nothing to gain back his heart desire. He truly is one sick fuck.

The overall plot is action packed that fully engaged me from the start. Cynthia kept things coming and coming relentlessly and left my heart pounding for every moment wondering what will happened to Eric and Ella next. Is just so refreshing to be reading such a kickass PNR after my long spell of contemporary.

The only complaint I have for this book is the ending. It confused me. I mean there is a HEA, but I still had a lot of question regarding what the hell happened. Will we get more explanation in the next book? Nevertheless, the confusing ending doesn't overshadow how much I love Deal with the Devil.

3.5 - "Are you asking for a bite?" Stars!

Eric Pate, has featured pretty heavily as a secondary characters in pretty much every previous book in the Purgatory series, being the director of the FBI Para Unit, his involvement with the previous couples coming together has often been unwanted and not for the most upstanding reasons. Cold, calculating and emotionless are words that I would have used to describe him prior to reading Deal with the Devil the guy definitely had a lot more going on behind the façade, and it was good to finally get his story.

”I guess I’m not the only one with secrets, am I?”

Apart from a familial connection that came to light in the first book, you know virtually nothing about Eric going into this book, I liked that Cynthia kept him almost unknown until giving him his story, it made it all the more interesting discovering more about him, his motivations and the secrets he has been keeping.

Ella is under the misapprehension that Eric, is one of her kind and even though she is being held pretty much as a prisoner at the beginning of the book, she believe Eric to be her one true mate.

”I feel different when you’re near me. When I held you in my arms and you just slept – fucking slept – that was the most peace I’d had since I died.”

As you would expect with a book from this author, all is never as it initially seems, the plot takes off at a rapid clip and doesn’t really let up until the end, the twists are many, the surprises plentiful, and all in all a good time was had in its reading.

I always enjoy this Cynthia Eden's books, you never quite know where she is going to take her characters, this series once again has been no exception… ends were tied up in this book, but not tightly, and I wonder if the author has more from this series and these characters yet to share. I wouldn’t mind going back for another visit!

4.5 stars.

First read- 3/23/2017. 4.5 stars.
2nd read- 2/15/2019. 3.5 stars..

It seems that first time I read this I loved it cause I gave it 4.5 stars. This time around? Hero’s lies and betrayal bothered me. I’m not talking about sleeping with OWs, he did not cheat! He was very protective but his betrayal was how he used her, put on a tracking device on her without her knowing it and his lies! Sure his thoughts were how no one were going to hurt her, he regretted it. But the lack of groveling in CE’s books bother me a bit! The only good grovel I have read in CE books was in Wicked and Wild and Tempted By Fate

Male protagonist was unlikable from the 1st book on, he didn't change a lot in his story.

I bought the series for 99c. If I had got it for the original price, I would have gone ballistic.

I should have stopped after the 2nd book.

Yep, I did it again. Started a series in the middle. I wasn't lost just a little confused about how the characters connected. Got lost a couple times there.

Ella was seriously kick-ass. She was determined to get her revenge and played Eric to get out. Eric was equally determined to figure out what she was. Man when they hooked it, it was HOT. They know how to use a room. People who know this series will love that all the previous couples show up.

The reason this doesn't get 5 stars is the ending. It lacked a lot. I'm hoping Lawrence gets a story now. I really gonna need to find time (bahahahaha) to go back and read the first 3 books.

Read this review on Got fiction? book blog

I've been craving Paranormal Romance, lately. I've even been re-reading some old favorites since it's so hard to find something new anymore. But just my luck Cynthia Eden has a new release.

Deal With the Devil is the fourth book in her Purgatory series, and while it can stand on its own, much better than most in a series, I'd still recommend reading at least the first book. Purgatory is a sort of Alcatraz for the Other. I mean you can't exactly just put a werewolf in jail with everyone else. Eric Pate oversees Purgatory, in fact, it was his idea. Unfortunately, though, he's realized that having that many paranormals in one spot, even if they're "contained," isn't the best idea. So while he may have cleaned up the corruption that we saw in previous books, the place is still a simmering pot just waiting for the right moment to boil over.

Meanwhile, the woman his team freed from the last book, from an evil werewolf alpha named Keegan, is still in a cell. Even if it's an apartment, it's still a prison when the doors are locked from the outside.

Ella wants out. She is so tired of being kept a prisoner. Keegan suspected what she was, and he had been using her blood to make himself stronger. Eric doesn't think Keegan is dead, so he's keeping her protected. But to Ella, it's just another cage.

Eric is full of surprises, and even his team, doesn't know what he is. But Ella does. He's her mate. She'd thought she was the last one alive, but her instincts are telling her that Eric is just like her. (I won't spoil it, but it's not what I thought!). This book goes much more in depth into the beginnings of the Others, of all of the Others, and when Ella realizes that Eric's been lying to her, and even lying to himself a bit, she bails.

She holes up and cries her heart out a bit, not wanting to believe he could betray her like that. But his deceptions aren't over. Unfortunately, someone from her past chooses that moment to pop back into her life, and wow, did I not see that coming. This dude is bad news. Obsessed with her, and obsessed with power, he is one badass mofo. But his obsession will be the death of him. Will it be the death of Ella?

I love betrayal plots, and this one was so brilliantly done. As I'm sure you all know from last month's Cynthia Eden binge, I'm a huge fan. No one writes PNR like she does. Her mastery of the Romantic Suspense genre only enhances her action-packed storylines. You can't go wrong with a Cynthia Eden book.

Perfect. Awesome. Dynamite. Deal with the Devil rips an emotional and powerful 5 stars from me. I've never read anything by Cynthia Eden before and she's made a fantastic impression upon me with this novel. It holds everything a great novel should, a developing and moving plot, characters that are multidimensional, and something that makes you want to read more. I loved both Ella and Eric.

The heroine was really a great heroine. Ella was clever, compassionate, affectionate, sweet, and a bit sassy. She has lived a long time and seen a lot of things she'd rather forget. She may no longer be a werewolf's prisoner, but she's still a prisoner to the PARA Unit. Her interaction with Eric at the beginning sets the stage for what happens later.

Eric can't help his compulsion to watch Ella or keep her captive. He's the director of the PARA Unit and not quite human himself. He's charming in a dark way, darling, deadly, and sinfully attractive. His life is one centered on being in control at all times. When Ella crawls under his skin, for the first time he feels peace. His control is easier with her around.

The story intertwines Ella and Eric's romance with action from werewolves and a mad scientist. Ella and Eric balance one another out. She gives him what he needs while he gives her what she needs. The two complete one another to which Ella sees Eric as her mate, the one she's been searching for for all her existence. Eric completely disregards the notion which causes lots of issues between him and Ella.

The story is vivid and well laid out. There's explanations of the world weaved into the story so there's never a point where the reader is confused by the world in which the novel is set. The writing wraps around the reader and holds them captive in the book's world until the last word has been read. I love story's like this and for that I'm ever so glad to have read Deal with the Devil. Cynthia Eden, I adore you and have to thank you for giving me Eric.

Deal With The Devil is the final book in the Purgatory series. We pick up where the previous book ended. Ella is one of the vampires who was captured by Keegan, but now she's in safe hands with the Para Unit. Or is she?

We finally get Eric's book and lemme tell ya, it was fun watching the starchy, controlled, and manipulative Eric fall hard 😌 Lots of hand flexing and fisting with this dude 😏

With every new book, the author builds and expands the world. Deal With The Devil delves into the origins of paranormal beings and it was a lot of fun being on this journey of discovery. We also got to see all of the characters contributing to the action. Overall, this was a solid conclusion to the series.

The best of the first four books in this series. Again, the writing is good and the author does a good job of telling the story. It is still basically the same story as the first three but in this one the male lead has lots of personality and a variety of emotions. The story has more complexity and the drama is less contrived.

A long awaited book.

Ever since we met Eric, which was from the very beginning, I’ve always been curious about him. He always seemed so cold, in control, never gave anything away, in few words the perfect robot. As a director of the FBI’s para unit, Eric must be those things to survive. But even the coldest man has a weak spot.

Ella was just rescued from one prison to end up in another. It may be a luxurious one but a prison nonetheless. Ella has had enough. She can’t understand why they won’t let her leave, she hasn’t done anything. She is the victim. She has survived this long and she won’t let that arrogant director imprison her even if he thinks he is protecting her.

She knows he’s watching, he knows that he has to set her free but they just don’t care. Has the coldest man alive found his match?

Deal with the devil was the BEST. Eric was truly a devil even with Ella by his side. It wasn’t until the end that I got to trust and love him. Ella was alone for so long and when she met Eric, the real Eric and not the director of the para unit, she wanted to believe in him. No one knows what Eric really is. His agents believe he’s a human but if only they knew the truth. Eric is far from human and Ella is far from the ordinary vampire. The truth is about to be revealed and nobody is ready for what’s coming.

I really liked Ella and Eric together as a couple. They were so passionate, strong and brave.

What I didn’t like much was the diversity of the species that each book in the series has. We’ve seen everything so far: vamps, werewolves, hybrids, djinns and a couple other things. I was fine with all those mainly because they are the most known paranormals but also because I could believe in those beings. Deal with the devil packs a whole new species, one that we don’t see often, one that is unique. Still that didn’t bother me much. I just don’t think that a story has to have so many unique species to be amazing!

What I loved was the characters. All of them were great. We got to see Duncan and Holly, Olivia and Shane and Connor.

I don’t know if this is the end to the Purgatory series but I know that I would love to see more. I hope we do see more.

Deal with the devil was an incredible read full of action, suspense, many twists, romance and many hot paranormal creatures.

I highly recommend it!

I adore the Purgatory series so getting my sticky fingers on this the fourth book sent me to book heaven. Add in the fact that it features Eric Pate the head honcho at the secret Para Unit and it's a must read as he is without a doubt the most intruiging and secretive guy working there. Always in control and such a hard driven guy but his enigmatic ways mean as a reader I just need answers about him. Boy did the author have a lot up her sleeve !
Deal With The Devil deals with the aftermath from the previous book Charming the Beast when the team rescued an unknown woman from a crazy werewolf. She's something different and whilst Eric gets answers the woman ( Ella) is held in containment but Ella has no intention of being held captive ever again and will do whatever it takes to escape. On the surface Ella appears to be a vampire but she's something far more ancient than that and when her secrets are revealed it's Eric who has to watch out! Ella and Eric are explosive together. Make no mistake this couple just cannot keep their hands off each other! Is it too much, too soon? I think for some readers it might be but that didn't bother me . However I just didn't buy into what Ella's past brought to light when it was explained. No spoilers here but there's an awful lot that Ella and those like her are partially responsible for and even though it's fiction it just didn't gel well with this reader. I do try to suspend all belief and enjoy the ride but eek there was an awful lot thrown into this melting pot. This is without a doubt an action packed story filled with romance and cameos from those characters we've loved in previous books . As a reader I sat down to read about a villain who deserved payback and then wham the author upped the ante with someone/something even more evil. Eric does not disappoint and his secrets and control are bust wide open making this such an exciting book to read. Ella just wants her Mate and is so sweet considering that she's part of a race that perhaps isn't always known for being good! She's never a pushover but perhaps a touch naive at times but she trusts her instincts and more importantly trusts Eric.
I really enjoy this series with it's mad mixture of creatures and hot romance. Shane from the second book will always be my favourite male character but for pure edge of the seat shock value Eric comes pretty close . If you enjoy intense and exciting paranormal stories with unusual bad guys then these books really need to come home with you!

Deal with the Devil features the mysterious Eric Pate, head of the FBI's Para Unit. Until now we haven't known much about this secretive man other than the fact that he'll do anything to protect his step-sister Holly and those under his command. However, when he begins questioning Ella, a woman the team rescued from Keegan, a twisted were who'd held her captive to gain more power, (Charming the Beast) we get a glimpse of the beast he's tried so hard to keep under control. No one on his team is aware of what Eric's gone through in hopes of protecting them against the beasts they battle.
Control was important for him - and with good reason. When his control splintered, people had a tendency to die.
While that may be true, Ella shatters his control. For her, this is a sign that he's the one she's been waiting for all these years. Eric, a master manipulator, hides the truth as long as he can. But, when the base is attacked, he knows he can no longer continue lying or hiding what he's become.

I really enjoy getting lost in this world Eden has created and look forward to more to come.

Thank you to Season Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Quotes taken from the pre-published copy and may be altered or omitted from the final copy.

I really wanted to love it but I couldn't get into it at all. Eric's character did not change in this book and I liked that a lot .. he was still kinda of a jerk but he did it charmingly and managed to be likable and interesting .. he's the only thing I liked about this book. Ella was hard to like , I wasn't really a fan of her character .. something about her was just off turning. What I struggled with here was surprisingly the type of species in this book .. the whole wings thing felt way too lame for me and I didn't find it interesting. I mean vampires and werewolves are cool but flying feys not so much. I didn't like the stuff that were added here nor the whole vampires and werewolves origins thing. Also the mate part was kinda of ruined here and was way less romantic. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

I loooove it!

Being in Eric's head is so great and refreshing. I always love POV from heroes that seem to be cold and distand on the outside but once you get inside their minds you see a whole new world. Simply fantastic!
I also liked Ella, she's a strong h who knows what she wants and she doesn't let anyone walk over her. The secondary characters aren't so bad, eather.

There is action, angst, romance and a great ending.

A great read that I recommend. :)

Overall this series has been a disappointment. it never went beyond ok. Bland characters, short books with no depth of plot, everything too easy. I think this is the worst way a mate bond can be used, as a substitute for romance. Hey, we are mates, no reason to explain how we fell in love. It's really jarring, all of a sudden, after a chapter, they are in love.

A disappointing read, but I am sorry to say, all her books lately have been such for me.

This is a wonderful series to read if you are a lover of paranormal. Each book is just as good as the others. As for this book, it was an excellent addition to the series. I suppose it could be read on its own (without having read the previous books) but I would highly suggest the series be read in order - you wouldn't regret waiting the length of three books before getting to this one.

**My thanks to Netgalley and the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**

I have enjoyed this series and I this book we get to meet a new species and character in Ella. Ella was a captive in the last book that managed to get free when the lab was on fire and Connor set her free. Since then she has been in the custody of Eric Pate and the Para Unit, but she is not happy about it at all.

Eric is intrigued about Ella and knows she is hiding something, but he is not sure what. He is also not sure why he is drawn to the woman. Unfortunately he pushes Ella a little too far and her hidden side comes out.

But when someone from Ella's past rocks up, he pushes both Ella, but especially Eric as he finally ends up letting his monster out and it is only Ella that is able to calm him and bring him back.

It was good to see the normally unflappable Eric fighting to stay in control and for his emotions to be let free more.

I have enjoyed this series and I am seriously kicking myself for having this sit on my kindle for so long.

Eric intrigued me from the very first book. He has been a constant present on l books and he was not a nice man. Cold, calculating, secretive... But every now and than there were glimpses of more. His love for his sister, his connection to Shane...
I love my big bad broody moody characters so I was looking forward to his story and it did not disappoint.
It was great getting a closer look into who he is.
And I loved Ella too. Perfect mix of innocent and naive and strong badass female!

••••••••••

REVIEW: 4.5 stars-- DEAL WITH THE DEVIL is the fourth installment in Cynthia Eden’s adult, contemporary Purgatory paranormal romance series. Purgatory is an island prison for the supernatural-those that cannot be controlled and are a danger to themselves and everyone else. This is PARA Unit director Eric Pate, and Ella Lancaster’s storyline. DEAL WITH THE DEVIL can be read as a stand alone but for background information and enjoyment, I suggest reading the series in order.

Told from alternating third person perspectives (Eric and Ella) DEAL WITH THE DEVIL follows the continued ‘imprisonment’ of Ella Lancaster, and the PARA Unit director’s explosive attraction to a woman whose species (or origins) is unknown. Ella ia a woman who had been imprisoned by a monster; for years she was tortured and abused, tested and retested, drained of blood and left to die. Someone or something was using Ella’s blood. Upon her ‘rescue’ Ella found she had traded one prison for another, regardless of the furnishing and trappings made to look like she was living a normal life. As the PARA doctors continued to run tests on Ella’s blood, Eric Pate found himself drawn to the woman who was secluded for her own protection, not imprisoned against her wishes.

Throughout the series Eric Pate has been an enigma. He is a man who demands obedience of those he commands; his control over the others is unquestioned; but he is also a man whose personality was questionable. Eric had secrets; dark and dangerous secrets, if revealed, could compromise his position within the PARA Unit.

The relationship between Ella and Eric is one of immediate attraction but Ella believes she was betrayed by the very people who aided in her rescue including Eric Pate –The PARA Unit commander and a man who isn’t quite human himself. What ensues is a mutual attraction between Ella and Eric, one that Ella believes is fated for her kind. Eric refuses to give in to the myth of fated mates, and although his need for Ella cannot be explained, Eric is determined to save Ella from whatever is hunting the woman of his heart even if it mean revealing the truth about his ‘second nature’. The $ex scenes are intimate, aggressive and compelling without the ‘over the top’ erotic factor.

The secondary and supporting characters include all of the previous storyline couples: Duncan and Holly, Shane and Olivia, Connor and Chloe. We are also introduced to the man responsible for Ella’s powers; and the beast who will stop at nothing to get her back. By way of the storyline premise, we are also introduced to a new breed of hybrid supernaturals, and the possibility of something more. Lawrence’s storyline may be next on the horizon.

DEAL WITH THE DEVIL is a story with action, mystery, suspense and romance. Cynthia Eden will capture your heart and your imagination. Her characters are likeable, engaging and intense; her storyline emotional, passionate and intriguing; the world building continues to grab your attention-always leaving you wanting more !

Another fantastic novel by Cynthia Eden, and a great addition to this wonderful series.

“I’m not a good man. Not the kind who follows the straight and narrow. I’ve seen too much darkness for that. I break rules. I get my hands dirty. I do whatever it takes to get the job done.”

Eric Pate has been a character in this series from the first book, and I wasn’t sure whether I was going to like his book. Eric is the director of the PARA Unit. He is cold-hearted and ruthless, has no scruples about manipulating and using others in order to get the job done. He has seen the worst that paranormal beings can and are able to do, and he will do anything to keep the real monsters locked up, and keep the innocents safe. In order to defeat the monsters, he became a monster himself. Surprisingly I loved Eric, who had no idea that he could be better than he was. It took Ella Lancaster to make him more humane and realise he was more man than monster.

“You brought me hope when I was sure I’d never have it again. Peace. You gave me that. I don’t care what stories you were told. I don’t care what happened before. You and me. Here and now. We matter. Fuck fate. We can choose our own path. Together.”

Ella has been a prisoner too many times in her life, and she refuses to stay a captive. She believes she is the only one of her kind left, but when she meets Eric, their instant attraction makes her think she’s finally found another one of her kind, the one person she has been waiting for so long … her mate. Unfortunately Eric doesn’t set her right with this misassumption, because he needs her trust. Yes, Eric does quite a few things in this book in order to get Ella to trust him, and to determine her weakness should there be others like her, but there was no denying that anything that hurt her, hurt him, and he would do anything to keep her safe.

Nothing was ever going to be enough with her.
Forever wouldn’t be fucking long enough.

I loved Eric and Ella as a couple. They were just meant to be. Their chemistry was scorching, and I loved how they couldn’t deny their feelings for each other.

He kissed her, and Eric knew he’d waited his whole life for Ella.
And he was so damn lucky that she had found him in the dark.

This was a wonderful book, full of suspense and action, and a wonderful romance.

Cynthia Eden is an AMAZING author, and I always love reading her books. This book and series is a must read for all PNR lovers.

It seems that Cynthia Eden can not write a bad book. Sure some books are better than others but that only makes them great.. not the others bad. Dance with the Devil is book 4 in her Purgatory Series, a little series that managed to slip in right under my Cynthia Eden radar.

In a world where they are still trying to keep the supernatural beings a secret it comes to a select group of individuals to police them. They are human and vampire and were and.. it takes all kinds because no one of any species is perfect and all species seem to have their criminal whack jobs and evil doers..

It's been Eric Pate's job to run the division, to manage purgatory (the pnr prison) and to keep the secret. Only he knew as a human, he was sadly uninformed of just what was out there. So in secret, he was dosed with all sorts of other species and managed to alter his DNA until even he isn't sure just what he is. Well, except for the leader of his division and a male to be reckoned with. He made his choices and he knows he will more than likely leave this world as he came into it, alone but he's ok with that, mostly. That is until one woman manages to get under his skin.. then well all bets are off.

Ella Lancaster has been held hostage and drained for her blood for what seems like forever. Now that she has been rescued, no way is she going to be contained again, even if it is for her own safety. She needs to be free.. only sexy Eric Pate has captured her attention. She is sure he's her mate, finally. Only nothing is ever what it seems and the death of the man who held her prisoner, surprisingly enough, doesn't solve her problems. How can she convince Eric he's her mate? How can she ignore the horror from her past? and how can Ella ever trust anyone after the betrayals that have been done to her?

This is a PNR love story pure and simple. While there are plot devices and tropes it is not one of Ms. Eden's incredibly awesome and equally disturbing suspense books. And that's ok.. What Deal does is share the wide range of Ms. Eden's talent. Her ability to create characters that we love and yet want to smack upside the head is her true gift.

Deal is an enjoyable book and for you PNR lovers out there.. this is a series you need to take notice of.

I received an ARC of this book from the Publisher, via Netgalley; this does not affect my opinion of this book or the content of my review.

This is book 4 in the Purgatory series, and the one I have been waiting for ever since the first book. Eric Pate has been a devious, manipulating, by any means necessary SOB. This is the kind of man who will shoot his own sister in the heart if he thinks it is for her own good. Oh yes, I've been waiting for his comeuppance.

So it isn't a stretch to find he's locked a woman up "for her own good". Only, the last thing Ella needs is to be contained again. The last thing she can tolerate is being caged, and she doesn't need him or anyone else to protect her. Ella is kind, and compassionate, and a little bit evil, and a lot filled with rage. Needless to say, I really liked her. Eric, not so much, he's kind of an emotionally stunted idiot. But don't worry, Ella absolutely gets to whollop him with a great big "I told you so", and that was glorious.

There's also plenty of action, a twisty ridiculous mystery, and off course an evil villain. That villain at first seemed to be a bit of a McGuffin, but it turns out, he explains everything. All the crazy sauce we've seen thus far had a very interesting backstory, we just didn't know it at the time. Some readers may think it goes too far in tying things up, but for me it just worked and made previous events make so much more sense.
The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star book for me is the ending, something-and I'm not sure what, just fell a little flat for me. Otherwise, it was a fun and satisfying read. Crazy creatures, hot romance, and a happy ending. A perfect read for after a long day at work. 4 stars

Eden’s fourth Purgatory novel had me in its grip from the very beginning. Ella Lancaster, has been captured [apparently this happens in book #3] and knows that someone is watching her from the other side of the glass. While she’s been given shelter and medical care, the blood her captors have given her is drugged. And this vampiress isn’t happy about it.
Within two pages we meet the man behind the glass, Eric Pate, and Ella senses immediately he’s not everything he seems. As head of a program called the Paranormal Unit, a unit that arrests and contains paranormal beings on the wrong side of the law, she’s figured out he isn’t human. But what is he?
Throughout nearly the entire book, the reader is left guessing about both Eric’s paranormal side and what else Ella could be. He has claws and fangs, and she is a vampire with something else in her genetics. I was super intrigued as to the cross-breeding of Eden’s characters in this book. Never thought to put both werewolf and vampire into one character, but then I remembered the Underworld movies where I absolutely adored Michael Corvin’s character who was turned both vampire and werewolf to bring the species together.
The heat between Ella and Eric was off the charts. As literal animals, they couldn’t keep their hands off one another and I absolutely loved it. A combination of these characters and the pacing kept me turning pages well into the night and early the next morning so I was able to finish the book in a couple of days.
5 star.

This is one of my favorite series and I was quite looking forward to this installment seeing as Eric has always a mysterious and intriguing character. To finally learn the truth about him was a relief and put some things into perspective. It was also great to see Eric and Ella come together like that, to find peace and comfort in each other. It was a little odd to discover what a blabbermouth Connor was though.

I was however not impressed with the book as a whole. Even though I really wanted to know what Eric story was all about, I was a little bit disappointed at the execution of the story. There was so much to discover but I felt that this book was a tad overwritten, like the draft version of a novel before the editor gives their input. Some of the scenes felt surplus and unnecessary, like they could have been incorporated better into the story. The entry of a second nemesis was abrupt, there was no build up for him in the storyline, as if the idea was thrown in there at the last minute in order to expand the story for a higher word limit. In my opinion justice was not done in the finalizing of this creative piece.

I am an avid reader of Cynthia Eden's work and am quite familiar with her style. I mean no disrespect to her creativity or her editor but somehow I feel that this particular book fell short of her regular standard.

Well, what can I say?

If you’re a fan of paranormal romance, this book is definitely for you.
If you like your stories on the very hot side of spicy, this book is most definitely for you.
If you like your plot lines to be engaging and with some unexpected twists, then this book is so totally for you.

Does it sound like I’m fan-girling over the new paranormal from Cynthia Eden? Well, yes, what can I say? Ms. Eden’s writing gives me the exact amount of action, steam, hotness, dirty talking and surprises I need to be engaged and entertained in a book.

This installment on the purgatory series did not disappoint. We have the uber-alpha Eric trying to deny the lust and other feelings stirred by Ella, the kick ass h of this story.

Unexpected villains, secrets, lot’s of action and lot’s of…. action (and it was hot, hot, HOT… I guess the beast inside is not so bad for some things).

Visiting with the other hot paranormals of the series is always a joy, but I would’ve loved a little more coupledom sightings? And if some pregnancy/tiny paranormal baby were to be thrown in somewhere I would be most thankful.

Yes, I’m a Cythia Eden fan :)

One of my Dirty Girls is a huge Cynthia Eden fan so when an ARC came up, I decided to give it a try. I was a bit worried about not having read the first three books in the Purgatory Series, but I caught on just fine.

I loved Ella and as her story unfolded it just tugged at my heart strings. I am a huge fan of strong heroines and alpha heroes. Ella definitely fit in the badass category but I wish we had gotten to see more of her kicking ass and taking names and less of Ella getting beaten up, grabbed, kidnapped etc etc.

Eric on the other hand didn't even make it to my like category for a good part of the story. His cause was definitely worthy, but his win at all costs attitude was kind of off-putting. He eventually grew on me and I ended up liking him overall but he's not going to make my favorite book boyfriend list.

There was plenty of action and some scorching hot scenes that made this book worthy of my time. I still really liked the book, even though Eric wasn't my favorite and plan to read the first three as soon as possible.
