The Scroll of Reuben: A The Narthex Academy Series Novella
The forces of darkness are not flesh and blood, but spiritual powers of wickedness in the heavenly places. Asher Haynes has come up against these forces too many times. After a rough semester, he finds an ancient scroll which, when opened, triggers the events of the end of the world. A mysterious voice tells him to deliver it to Reuben before it can be stolen.
Running for his life, Asher is thrown into a partnership with Rowan, a member of the Seer Team, who is sent to protect the scroll. Together, they work to find Reuben, keep the scroll out of the hands of the Mazzikim, and stay alive in the process.

Asher Haynes has had a difficult semester. To make things worse, he is thrown a mysterious scroll that could unleash a sequence of events that leads to the end of the world. With the help of a member of the Seer Team, Rowan, he’ll go on another journey to protect the scroll and find Reuben, all to keep it out of the hands of the Mazzikim.
I actually started the novella after I finished the first book in the series, Dreamer, but put it down when I realized that it took place after the second book in the series, Speaker. After starting the third book, I noticed a character whose original introduction I hadn’t finished.
While much shorter than the full books, obviously, this slice of adventure didn’t disappoint. I mentioned in my review of Speaker that I loved Jackson even more, but I think I need to say it again: I loved Jackson! He continued to make even the most serious of situations hilarious and light-hearted. He and Asher balanced each other out quite nicely. That being said, this was the guys’ story. Maclaine’s name got thrown into the story a few times, but this adventure was reserved for the two best friends.

You can read this story without having read the other books in the series, but I would suggest reading it after book two to get the full effect.
