It is everybody’s dream. It is what we dreamt all our life. It is what does not let us sleep in the night, what we dream when we browse Nasa’s websites, what we live again and again everytime we see Neil landing his foot on that grey surface.
All of us would like to be Anna, who is universal, like all the great characters. But Anna has many shades too, she is able to do amazing and very brave things. She’s a modern heroin, with all the bad sides of her personality that she can overcome in the right moments.
Red Desert is a real page turner, with lots of incredible twist and turns. I can’t wait to know what is going to happen in the next book.

I read Punto di Non Ritorno in Italian quite a while ago and I was completely surprised when Ms Monticelli announced she has translated her Red Desert saga in English... of course I had to read it again in English!
Imagine you are a space pioneer living on Mars, with other 4 fellows. You left everything you care on Earth, just to write your name in the history. You thought your journey would have been a dream, however it quickly turned into a nightmare. Two of your fellows died, and you are fed up of your life after 1000 days spent into your space-home. So you decided to tempt fate going out across the Mars’ desert. You’ve got nothing to lose, don’t you think?
That pretty much the beginning of a gripping, fast-paced sci-fi thriller set on Mars.
Monticelli's writing style is even more enhanced by the English and the characters are superbly pictured, they are pretty real and it's a thing I really like.
Highly recommended - do not miss out the second volume!

E' il sogno di ciascuno di noi. E' quello che abbiamo sempre desiderato, sognato. E' quello che ci tiene svegli talvolta la notte, quello che sogniamo ogni volta che visitiamo i siti e i blog della Nasa, quello che viviamo con passione tutte le volte in cui riguardiamo Neil scendere quegli scalini.
Tutti noi vorremmo essere Anna, che ci appare universale, al pari dei grandi personaggi della letteratura. Ma Anna è un personaggio sfumato, sfaccettato, capace di compiere azioni terribili ed estreme. E' una donna dei nostri tempi, non un'eroina classica. E' rosa da rimorsi e rimpianti, ma anche capace di straordinari sentimenti ed azioni.
Cinque stelle più che meritate.

Ci sono libri senza infamia e senza lode, che vengono letti, gustati e messi da parte quando si passa a quello successivo. Altri libri che deludono completamente le aspettative, delle storie che non riescono a catturare il nostro interesse e altre ancora che non vengono neppure finite, e sono presto gettate nel dimenticatoio.
E poi ci sono libri come 'Punto di non ritorno', che ti prendono per il collo, ti inchiodano a terra e non ti lasciano più andare.
Sono questo genere di libri che rimangano con noi anche dopo aver voltato l'ultima pagina, che ci danno una scarica di adrenalina che sopravvive alla prova del tempo, che ci emozionano e che ci fanno venir voglia di continuare a leggere.
Rita Carla Francesca Monticelli. Un nome, una garanzia.
Carla disegna con grande maestria una storia semplice ma astuta, che si svolge su diversi piani temporali e che tocca più corde al tempo stesso. Passione, mistero, avventura, speranza, pentimento e istinto di sopravvivenza. Questa novella ha tutto quello che un appassionato di fantascienza potrebbe desiderare, and more.
L'architettura narrativa è solida, il ritmo di lettura veloce ed incalzante, i personaggi a tutto tondo e la storia seducente e ben strutturata, con quel pizzico di mistero e di ironia che le conferiscono un fascino particolare.
'Punto di non ritorno' è un classico esempio di quanto in alto può arrivare la letteratura Indipendente Italiana, quando a tenere il timone c'è una Scrittrice con i controfiocchi. E Carla merita indubbiamente quella 'S' maiuscola.
Se vi ritenete degli appassionati di fantascienza indipendente italiana ma non avete letto 'Punto di non ritorno', non siete degli appassionati di fantascienza indipendente italiana.
Altamente consigliato.

Red desert is a novella told largely in flashbacks about the end of a space mission and how it all began. The woman is seen in "present-day" and in the flashbacks from several years before look from very different lifestyles. Slowly you can see the shy version of her morph into a determined woman, often being hit back by events, and creating a complex life experience for her to pull from. I found this progression realistic and interesting. At times I would have liked a clearer marker for when I was in her timeline however.
The story gets going immediately with the protagonist in a airlock, ready to go out onto the surface of Mars. We are given enough information to know how that would work and limitations, but all information about why when or how the character got there are left until later. Let the adventure commence.
There were some places, ironically often in the tension based scenes, where the writing felt a bit slack, but I feel this was more to do with the translation than a judgement on the writer's abilities.
I would give this a 3.5 but I round it up to a 4 for the sake of ratings sites.

Il primo volume di una saga di fantascienza che da un po' stagnava fra tanti altri libri nel mio kindle, fino a quando non è arrivata la spinta a leggerlo. Divorato in pochissimo tempo e ho già acquistato il secondo. Un bellissimo libro, scritto bene e che riesce a farti entrare nella storia con calma. All'inizio mi pareva un po' lento, ma verso la fine ho capito che la scelta del ritmo è stata voluta oltre che azzeccata. Non leggo molto di fantascienza, ma personalmente ritengo che questo libro sia adatto anche a chi di solito non predilige questo genere perché nella storia si inserisce il percorso personale di Anna, la protagonista, attraverso riflessioni e flashback che mi hanno fatto capire come il tutto si presti anche a una lettura metaforica e simbolica.

Un inizio davvero coinvolgente per un romanzo a puntate degno della migliore fantascienza straniera.
Il lettore è immediatamente trascinato all'interno della storia, e non può fare altro che andare avanti, e scoprire a poco a poco le varie dimensioni ed i personaggi della vicenda.
A differenza di molta letteratura di fantascienza, l'analisi psicologica dei personaggi è estremamente approfondita e costituisce uno dei principali motivi di interesse della storia.
Fantascienza e psicologia dunque, azione e introspezione, si alternano e compenetrano felicemente in questa prima puntata di Deserto Rosso.
Il lettore è immediatamente trascinato all'interno della storia, e non può fare altro che andare avanti, e scoprire a poco a poco le varie dimensioni ed i personaggi della vicenda.

I read the English version of this novella and had a really good time with it. Of course Mars is one heck of a setting, but beyond that the narrative was quite riveting. If I were to have one complaint it would be that this could easily have been a full novel as many questions were left unanswered. I understand this is to be a series and so I've little doubt that everything will be addressed in due time but I'd like more now. I'm impatient like that.
All that aside, this was very good with a complicated protagonist and bountiful subplots, all deftly laid out in truncated form. I'll be sure to grab the next in the series, which is tentatively scheduled for release in September, I believe.

Anna is a member of a small crew to go to Mars and attempt to colonise it. After the deaths of some of the crew members, Anna suspects another member and drives off across Mars in a rover. As she goes, she remembers the circumstances that brought her to the red planet and the regrets she has.
I thought this was well written, Anna was an interesting character when you learn what she has done. The story was good, although it did tend to jump from one time to another without any real breaks, which could be a bit confusing at times. Overall though I thought it was an enjoyable story with an intriguing ending.

This is a fascinating Scifi set on Mars as it is just being settled. There is a problem within the team, but you don't really know what it is that has driven Anna, one of the scientist, to leave the settlement in a rover. When she gets beyond the point of no return, due to her oxygen supply,you really are on the edge of your seat.
This is a well written novel with an engaging main character who takes you through the events that have brought her to this breaking point.
The surprise ending leaves you begging for more. Can't wait to read the next one. "Translate faster, Carla!"

This short novella is set on Mars with flashbacks to the life the main character has left on Earth. We think at first her actions seem heroic and desperate, zooming off on a buggy into the desolation of Mars, but as we read she becomes less relatable and more fragile, and we wonder exactly who is in the right here, if anyone, or if they are all driven batty by isolation.
Well translated, this is an interesting story but loses a star for the cliffhanger ending.

I first got hooked on Sci-Fi when I read Edgar Rice Burroughs "John Carter, Man of Mars". I continued my trek through Sci-Fi through the minds of Heinlein, Herbert, Asimov, Michael R. Hicks, and now Rita Monticelli. This story of the first exploration is captivating. Anxiously awaiting the entire series.

In due parole, Deserto rosso è esattamente come dovrebbe essere un ebook autopubblicato: storia interessante, ben scritta, con una protagonista ben caratterizzata, buon senso di serialità, editing e impaginazione impeccabili e prezzo onesto.

I enjoyed this story. I found the premise to be alluring and interesting.
Here is the premise:
Ana has been offered the opportunity to travel to Mars on the first ever mission there. It is a permanent mission as the astronauts going on it will not return to earth. Why? Because they will be the first settlers there and are meant to be the selected few to establish a livable community on Mars. They shall be Mars' first inhabitants.
Ana has some problems in her personal life. She hates her father, lost her mother, is in love with a man which she knows that she cannot be with him, and is angry at the way things turned out in her life. So she figures that she has nothing to lose. Why not jump ship to Mars?
During her mission many of her peers have died for different reasons, and the one guy that is in charge (Hassan), she cannot stand and simply does not trust because he reminds her too much of her dad.
Once again in that "I have nothing to lose" attitude Ana makes some really bad mistakes, but figures that Mars is her salvation.
Following are my thoughts on this book.
Pros:
1) Ana, the main character is brave and self-sufficient. She is strong willed and very much the "take the bull by the horns" type persona.
2) The authors had a good way of writing the prose in a way that the "newbie" to science fiction could understand it well, as she explains all of the scientific elements.
3) Having translated the book from Italian to English could have been a potentially daunting task, yet I found that the authors executed it very well.
4)I enjoyed that fact that the characters felt more like real people and not the stereotypical Hollywood cookie-cutter images that most stories contain.
5) The story was written in first person, present tense, and done well. There may have been one of two instances of tense inconsistency at the most. What I did like was that whenever there was a flashback, that part was written in past tense.
Cons:
1) Personally, I would've liked to see a bit more of an indicator of a scene separation. Like a prompt that tells the reader that he/she is entering into a different aspect of the story. There was some spacing between scenes, but I felt as though it wasn't altogether sufficient. Because to the untrained eye, the scenes will run together and confuse the reader.
2) The story is one entire chapter. There are no chapters just one run along story beginning to end. This is something that I'm on the fence on because, it is a relatively short read (in that it's a novella) so if the person has the time he/she could finish it in one sitting. However, for those of us who are extremely busy and cannot finish it in one sitting, the fact that there is no way to indicate where we are in a read can be very discouraging. I've seen stories shorter than this that have chapter separations, and personally I appreciate them.
3) The ending was a big cliff-hanger. It cut off in a way that made me feel as though there was no real resolution. Even short stories can have resolution.
Overall, this is en enjoyable read that the lover of science fiction would enjoy. Just, be aware of the cliffhanger. ;)

I libri di fantascienza che ho letto finora erano scritti da uomini, e con una forte tendenza allo humour
(tipo "Guida all'autostoppista galattico" e "The ultimate inferior Beings"). Ero curiosa di leggere un libro sci-fi scritto da una donna, e sono rimasta piacevolmente sorpresa.
Premetto che non sapevo molto di Marte, a parte le cose che ho sentito menzionate qua e la' in TV o nei giornali. Tuttavia le descrizioni dell'autrice sono cosi' accurate, chiare, e interessanti, che a momenti mi sembrava di essere io quella che stava vivendo le avventure della protagonista Anna.
E' chiaro che l'autrice si e' ben documentata, oppure e' una scienzata della NASA che finge di essere una scrittrice?
L'altra cosa che mi ha colpito e' stata la caratterizzazione dei personaggi. Anna, la protagonista, non e' la tipica eroina, super fantastica, che compie imprese strabilianti. E' un essere umano come tutti noi, con le sue fragilita', incertezze, ma allo stesso tempo e' una donna convinta dei propri obbiettivi e disposta a rinunciare perfino all'amore della sua vita, pur di perseguire il suo sogno. Questo mi ha fatto riflettere parecchio, e mi sono chiesta se io avessi fatto altrettanto, mi fossi trovata nei suoi panni.
Il ritmo della storia e' incalzante, ti sembra di farne parte ad ogni istante, e sicuramente questo libro e' un page-turner, non riesci a metterlo giu'. Il finale poi e' un cliff-hanger inaspettato. Ho appena acquistato il secondo libro perche' voglio sapere cosa succede adesso. Ho paura ad iniziarlo pero' perche' mi pare di capire che la puntata 3 e 4 non sono ancora uscite. Come faro' dopo che finisco di leggere il secondo?

Non sono mai stato un lettore di libri di fantascienza, perché quei pochi che in passato ho affrontato mi hanno annoiato. Ma in Italia Carla Monticelli è diventata una scrittrice con la quale fare i conti, e ho deciso di acquistare questo ebook.
L'autrice conosce il mestiere come pochi, segno che ha letto e pure tanto (in un Paese come il nostro dove tutti scrivono e nessuno legge, è sempre bene sottolinearlo). Oltre ad avere studiato l'argomento (al termine del libro c'è la bibliografia delle opere lette e consultate per redigere il libro), Carla Monticelli sa come funzionano i meccanismi narrativi. Non carica la pagina di pesanti descrizioni delle tecnologie, ma concentra la sua attenzione sui personaggi. Credo che sia qui la carta vincente: puntare non sugli scenari, sulle meraviglie tecnologiche, ma sui personaggi. Onesti, veri, pieni di debolezze anche se stanno scrivendo la Storia (o almeno vorrebbero farlo, ma i loro problemi, e fantasmi, li raggiungono anche sul Pianeta Rosso).
Assieme a questo, un sapiente uso del flashback, e una tensione che "abbandona" il lettore nel punto giusto, spingendolo così ad acquistare il secondo libro.
Qualcuno potrebbe vederci troppo mestiere; io ribatto che in Italia ce n'è troppo poco. Per questo i lettori sono così scarsi; ci fossero più scrittrici come Carla Monticelli, le persone sarebbero spinte a leggere, invece evitano di farlo perché detestano le elucubrazioni di sedicenti autori che pascolano in televisione.

Non amo il genere ma ho voluto dare una chance a questo libro perché mi stuzzicava il tema "Marte", memore anche di quanto mi fosse piaciuta la serie tv Defying gravity.
Ebbene, sono rimasto piacevolmente colpito dalla tecnica narrativa e dalla competenza scientifica dell'autrice. Mi è piaciuto in particolare il ricorso al flashback per inquadrare meglio la storyline dei protagonisti e quel velo di mistero, quell'X-file con cui la Monticelli lascia il lettore alla fine dell'episodio, a chiedersi perché Anna stia compiendo un gesto tanto estremo e soprattutto chi o cosa l'abbia spinta a farlo. Si salverà? I tasselli del puzzle andranno tutti al loro posto?
Ho comprato subito il secondo episodio, anche se non apprezzo appieno la scelta del romanzo a puntate, la trovo un'operazione commerciale che rischia di far storcere il naso al potenziale lettore. D'altra parte trovo lungimirante e intellettualmente onesta la politica del prezzo a cui ogni episodio è venduto.
Viva la fantascienza ancorata alla verosimiglianza e alle leggi della fisica.
Complimenti all'autrice anche per il rispetto che ha verso il lettore, nel consegnargli un prodotto limato e curato in ogni suo aspetto, anche grafico.

Ho trovato questo racconto, molto piacevole e scorrevole nella lettura. Anche se la storia potrebbe configurarsi nell’ambito del genere fantascienza, l’attenzione di questo primo episodio si concentra sulla figura dell’esobiologa svedese Anna Persson, che una mattina prima dell’alba lascia di nascosto la struttura abitativa e si addentra da sola nel freddo deserto marziano con un rover pressurizzato, portando con sé provviste e aria per appena due giorni. Il suo sembra essere un gesto suicida. Ma nel procedere in questo suo viaggio, Anna inizia a scavare nella sua memoria,riportando alla mente gli eventi che l’hanno condotta fino a quel punto, cosa e chi si è lasciata alle spalle e lasciandoci intravedere le motivazioni del suo gesto.
La descrizione del paesaggio marziano è molto efficace e permette di “vedere” le rocce di Marte, le sue enormi pianure e gli insidiosi canyon. Ma è si tratta anche di un racconto che analizza anche la psicologia del personaggio, e attraverso vari flash back è possibile ripercorrere la storia del suo passato.

The English translation seemed strange. But that might actually be a pro for making the book more authentic, given that it's told in first-person and the main character is not a native English speaker.
On a very personal note, I could not sympathize with the main character. At all. But all in all, I'd recommend it to sci-fi aficionados.

I loved this book from the first page. It starts in the middle of the action, which caused a well-rounded surprise effect, and immediately moves the reader to Mars' surface as if everyone could travel in space in a blink of an eye.
But it isn't only the setting, the spectacular atmosphere, or the plot twists that made me turn page after page without breathing, I felt a complete identification with Anna, the protagonist. She's the core of the story—her actions, her feelings, and her choices. Through flashback the author tells us of Anna's painful past, her difficult relationship with her father and her lost love. She's so real and human even though she's a brilliant scientist; her personality is as strong as her abilities in this wild and danguerous world.
The author's style is modern and fluid, no one word out of place, and is able to convey the complex topic in a very simple way.

Non essendo un'appassionata di libri di Fantascienza, mi sono avvicinata a questo primo episodio di Deserto Rosso con curiosità, per i tanti giudizi positivi che avevo letto in rete, e non mi sono pentita. Rita Carla Francesca Monticelli sa come gestire le redini della narrazione e tenere avvinto il lettore.
In Deserto Rosso c'è la tensione della suspense e anche la storia d'amore. Mi è piaciuto molto il gioco dei flashback, che sono un'ottima occasione per conoscere meglio la protagonista ed entrare in sintonia con lei. Ho appena visto che l'unico difetto, per una come me che non ama i romanzi a puntate, è stato risolto dalla pubblicazione, proprio in questi giorni, dell'intera saga in un solo volume. Consigliato.

The opening is dramatic as use of the present tense and the narrator’s situation draws the reader in. The storyline switches between events on Mars and flashbacks in which we learn a great deal of backstory. I found these details and the relationships Anna has with other characters very engaging. Where things were not so great for me was in the large sections of didactic information about Mars itself. These chunks felt a little stilted but this may well be due to the fact they are translated. Sometimes the very fact of the translation made itself evident in clumsy phrasing or overlong sentence structures. And there was also the odd proofreading issue.
Despite this I enjoyed the story very much and would certainly read the rest of the series.

Si legge rapidamente, mantiene la tensione viva, è molto visivo, come guardare una puntata di Lost, con flashback che ci donano la storia dei personaggi, della protagonista, in particolare, ma tutto ciò fatto con narrativa, punto di vista e psicologia della protagonista.
L'incipit è qualcosa di meraviglioso. Ti spinge direttamente nella storia, dentro quel rover, su Marte. Marte visto con gli occhi di una scienziata, ma che ti permette di poter avere quelle informazioni di base che ti fanno comprendere tante cose sull'universo marziano. Quando Anna Pearson cade e resta in fin di vita quasi poco prima del finale, poi ti chiedi: e ora? E ora c'è la seconda parte da leggere.

Bellissimo, un capolavoro, l' ho letto dall' inizio alla fine in 2 ore, adesso compro le altre tre parti su Smashwords. Complimenti all' autrice, da tenere d' occhio. Arthur Clarke e' tornato in versione 21esimo secolo, e si e' messo a scrivere in italiano!
