What a great read this turned out to be! A enemies to lovers story, “Evan the Score” was a sexy, fun, feel good story with the perfect amount of steam, angst and drama, so if you love the hate-to-love trope this might be the perfect read for you. The story fallows Tess McKenzie, an actress who’s performing in the Tenth Circle of Showbiz Hell – dinner theater. Her dream? To open with other actors their own theatre. The problem is she doesn’t have enough money.

“Revenge was a dish best served in bed— And Tess McKenzie was about to get a five-course meal.”

Tess is responsible for the worst day of Hunter Dade’s life. An year ago, the maid of honor and the best friend of back then Hunter’s fiancée ‘manage’ to talk her friend out of walking down the aisle to marry the Texan property tycoon. Hunter is a partner in ‘Score Property’, one of the fasters growing real estate development companies in the U.S. He never forgot what Tess did and how she destroyed everything he...thought he wanted. He hates her and he’s more than ready to make her pay. Well,...he doesn’t hate her, but he despises her, so when the opportunity arrives to get his revenge he’s more than ready.

description

Hunter need a fiancée to land a deal, so he decides to hire Tess. To be paid, Tess will have to spend two days in Hunter’s company and pretend he loves him and want to spend the rest of her life with him. Now, Tess is not Hunter’s biggest fan. However, she can’t deny he’s a fine specimen of a man or that she’s attracted with him.

“...how could she have forgotten how tall he was or how possessively he claimed the space around her? Well-sculpted muscles had drawn taut under his shirt when her palm grazed his chest. Raw, animalistic power at her fingertips.”

She needs the money, so she accepts his proposition. Hunter can’t deny Tess has a killer body or the attraction he feels toward her makes him a little angry. For the next two days he will have to remember himself that Tess is just an employ and he will be just fine.

“Taking her would be a pleasure. Making her beg as he fucked her tight, curvy body would be the ultimate prize.”

I really enjoyed this one! Both Tess and Hunter were likeable characters from the start and I have to say I enjoyed their characterization. Both of them have issues, but the story wasn’t full or angst or too melodramatic which I appreciated. Hunter was a hero very easy to like. He has a hero complex, wanting to save and protect everyone around him. He was sweet and thoughtful and I liked how caring and attentive he was with his mother. He has some issues, but nothing was overwhelming. I liked Tess! She was such a spitfire. O loved her sarcasm. She was fun, sweet and compassionate and the perfect match for Hunter. I loved their banter and I enjoyed how they realized they were wrong about each other. Together they felt pretty good to me and I loved how supportive and tender they were at times with each other.

“They kissed like they fought: wild, uninhibited, with bite.”

The sexual tension between these two is fantastically done and their chemistry was off the charts.

This was an enjoyable read and overall I liked it! What didn’t work for me was how easily everything was resolved in the end - evryone accepted and forgave everything and everyone. Yeah...right!Needless to say, everything felt rushed.

Overall, a great read!

Revenge was a dish best served in bed- And Tess McKenzie was about to get a five-course meal.

There is no other trope out there that I love more than hate-to-love. And I think I may have found my favorite hate-to-love romance book to date. Even the Score was full of sexual chemistry, humor, all wrapped around a fantastic story that was utterly delicious. Delicious I tells ya! If this book isn't on your TBR, you are seriously missing out because what a perfect gem this turned out to be.
What the fuck was happening here? So it had been a while since he'd released his pent-up energy inside a woman, but this was Tess McKenzie. They despised each other. The last time they'd been this close, he had been losing his ever-loving shit on her.

A year ago Tess McKenzie was responsible for talking her best friend out of walking down the aisle to marry Hunter Dade, To say that Hunter still holds a grudge about this to this day would be a mild understatement. He despises the little spitfire. But beneath their barbs and insults is an undercurrent of lust and sexual chemistry so strong it's enough to make things a while lot more interesting.
When not thinking of imaginative ways to murder her, he'd be consumed with conjuring up even more imaginative ways to screw her brains out.
Fast, slow, all night long.

Tess may have been responsible for the worst day of his life, but Hudson is willing to let bygones be bygones...well...sort of. He'll get his revenge AND get something out of Tess first. He'll offer her a deal that she can't pass up. Hunter needs a "fiance" to land a deal that he needs, and Tess needs funds to start her theater. He may not have forgiven her, but he's certainly willing to overlook things for a few days. Or as long as it takes to get this attraction out of their systems...
There was that flash of anger again, and his cock stirred in response. Taking her would be a pleasure. Making her beg as he fucked her tight, curvy body would be the ultimate prize.

The chemistry between these two was absolutely sizzling. Even when they were at each other's throats, you can practically feel them wanting to jump each other's bones. It was so much fun to read. But things are not quite as they seem with them either. Tess may not be the rich little princess that Hunter always thought her to be. And Hunter may be a lot more than just a property tycoon with a chip on his shoulder. As these two begin to get to know each other and their connection grows, they begin to see that somethings aren't so simple.
They kissed like they fought: wild, uninhibited, with bite.

Kate Meader devised the perfect formula of hate+lust to make this book absolutely unputdownable. I couldn't get enough of it. There's none of that typical and tiring back and forth that you'd normally find in books like this. It just felt like natural progression here.
...he wanted her pleading for the sweet release that came when his working-class cock was pounding the ever-loving superiority out of her.

You can see each of the character's growth throughout the story and you can't help but root for them both.

If you're a fan of the hate-to-love trope, this book is not to be missed. This was my first 5 stars from Brazen this year and I can tell you that I've found myself a new author to love. I'm now going back and adding every other book on this woman's backlist. I'm in love here, people! With the story and with this author.
He wanted to fuck her, possess her, save her- And then he wanted to spend every second of his sorry life making hers better.

4.5 'Frenemies Forever' stars

Even The Score is the perfect kind of feel good romance that make me laugh and give me all the warm fuzzy feelings. It come with a dose of smart humor, a pair of lovable characters and some emotional moments that left my heart tender. I spent my weekend curled up on the bed with Hunter and Tess and fantasizing of having a threesome with them.

Meet Hunter Dade, the cowboy with a hero complex and Tess McKenzie a spitfire, aspiring theater actress who ruined his wedding day.

He thinks she is a snobbish little prissy princess who looks down on his roughneck ass.
She thinks he is a Texas hick who looks down on her arts and female power.

Let's cue the fireworks, shall we?

Revenge was a dish best served in bed - And Tess McKenzie was about to get a five-course meal.

One year ago, Tess was the maid of honor and best friend of his bride. When their path cross again, they are the frenemies you wish they will get down and dirty with each other. Due to his bride-less circumstances, Hunter decided to proposition Tess to be his fake fiance for a weekend to win a property deal in return for a big check to start her own theater.

Their fun banter and mockery on each other is simply delightful to read. Add in some chivalry crap from Hunter, it provide healthy dose of sexual tension.

I like that Hunter and Tess isn't what they appear to be at first glance. They both have a past that shaped what they are today and I can see their motivation behind the dreams they are chasing.

Hunter is the epitome of chivalrous isn't dead. Despite his upbringing or maybe due to his upbringing, he act as the perfect gentleman, the protector and the provider for the people he cares about selflessly. He is adamant to prove that he is no longer the worthless white trailer trash.

A man like him could never be worth of even touching a woman like this. But he dared all the same because he wanted to know what it was to love a goddess, if only for a short while.

The more time Tess spent with Hunter, the more she is falling for the infuriating, stubborn brute. I mean who wouldn't love his white knight complex, putting of her needs at forefront and giving out all those orgasm-inducing foot rubs. But she is having a hard time convincing the stubborn man that he is entitle to his own happiness.

"I hope you find her one day, this perfect woman who can make it all better."

Overall, this is another surprisingly great read for a new-to-me author. It was fun, it was sexy, it has a book husband quality hero, my heart hurts a little here and there for Hunter and the ending was simply perfect to wrap up the story.

"All I need is you. And if I have you, then I'll truly arrived at the place where I'm meant to be and with the woman I'm meant for."

5 - Perfection times heaven. Stars!

Sometimes you pick up a book with no expectations and no real idea as to what you are going to get. I hadn’t read anything by Kate Meader prior to Even The Score, and to say it grabbed me from the first page would be an understatement. I am naturally quite a quick reader, but I found myself slowing down with this one, because the writing is just that good, I wanted to make sure that I hadn’t missed anything.

Kate has also managed to mix snark, sarcasm and wit perfectly between Hunter and Tess, that when the emotional aspect of their pasts and their developing relationship comes to the fore of the story it makes it all the more poignant.

He had a lifetime of darkness nipping his heels, and she was the first flush of dawn.

Hunter and Tess, were really, really likeable characters, both strong and pretty confident personalities, who are used to dealing with their own issues and getting on with things the best they can, but they also have massive pre-conceived notions about the other, that as their weekend together as fake lovers progresses, they both start to realise just how wrong about the other they were, and how right they might actually be together.

Being the first book in the Tall, Dark & Texan, Series, I have to say I am pretty effing excited right now, nothing gives me more of a rush than discovering an author that ticks every box I have in relation to my romantic reading requirements, and Kate Meader has certainly done that, and then some, with a little bit more on top for good measure!

”I love your dirty mouth, Hunter Dade, and you can use it on me anytime.”

Thanks for finding me a good book Ami,

Maybe there's hope for us yet! I don't know why I haven't read a book by this author before, because I have a couple on my list. I will definitely try them, I like her writing style, the banter in this was fun. Well, the hot Texan didn't hurt either....! Definitely a favorite Brazen.

This was everything I enjoy about a Brazen title.
Quick read? Check
Fun banter? Check
Sizzling sexual tension? Check
Hot sex? Check check check!!

It's not a storyline I haven't read before unfortunately and it may get lost and forgotten in the many books that I have read with similar plots. But still an enjoyable read and I'm def interested in Brody's story (FYI he wears glasses and apparently is the brains of the trio ;)) #swooningalready)

HOT! Books that written by Miss Meader is certainly sizzling hot. This woman knows how to make her chemistry hot. Sadly not so much heat on the plot. When I was listening to the audiobook, almost half of the story is sizzling hot that make your panty sizzling.

Overall, the entirety of the story is not bad. It is still enjoyable especially with the smutty scenes. Hunter is certainly an intense hero with an emotional baggage. Tess is the opposite.

Kate Meader has once again reminded me why I love reading her books. She has managed to make sensual tension and banter into such a fun yet emotional endearing romance that will make any hearts flutter. In her newest release, Even the Score, Kate Meader has written one of my favorite tropes of frenemies to lovers. There is nothing like a love/hate relationship and sexual tension to keep readers like myself engaged. With hot sexual chemistry and connection buzzing throughout the book, Ms. Meader will remind readers that you can't judge a book by its cover. And most importantly, unexpected love might be the best kind of love there is.

#EvenTheScore

Tess McKenzie knew what it was to like to grow up with money. She was the daughter of a famous Oscar winning actress. But what others fail to see was that behind closed doors, Tess was lonely. She didn't have the best kind of relationship with her mother but she found her happiness on stage acting in local theaters and pursuing her dreams to open up her own theater. But there was only one hitch to fulfilling her dream, she didn't have the finances to do it since she didn't want any financial help from her mother. So with no money, she needed to find an acting job soon.

Hunter Dade is a true Texan through and through. He is a successful property tycoon but unlike Tess he had to work real hard to garner his wealth. From trailer parks to mansion, Hunter knew what it meant to work hard. He also knew what it meant to lose someone important. So when he needs to score a property, he knew he had to earn the trust of the property owner in order to score this business deal and what better way to prove that he is an honest trustworthy man than showing the rich businessman that he's a committed and dedicated man. So in need of a fiancee, he hires the woman, who has the power to get under his skin...Tess McKenzie. So what happens when Hunter and Tess realized that there is no faking about the heated and strong attraction that they have for each other?

Even the Score was so much more than a steamy romance. This book really explored the depths of two people finding comfort, solace, and healing through each other's love and compassion. Two complete opposites finding that unexpected love they never imagined. What I love about this book was that Ms. Meader not only made this book hot and steamy but she made Hunter and Tess's bond tangible and palpable. So if you are looking for a book that will make you believe that the best kind of love story that will change your life is the unexpected then I highly recommend you to read Even the Score.

4 perfection times heaven stars

Loved this new author to me, but loved Hunter Dade far more!

description

Tess McKenzie is biding her time until she has enough funding to set up a theatre of her own. In the meantime, the actress is working at a dinner theatre, currently kitted out in a corseted waist and ffffoool-me shoes.

Hunter Dade is an established business man on the edge of a huge deal, but finds himself needing someone to play his fiancee. Dealing with a man he’s known since a boy, he’s going to have to prove his life is right on track in order to clinch it.

Shame that Tess isn’t unknown to Hunter, and from a previous life, there is no love lost between them. But hang on, where has all that sizzle come from? Why hadn’t they noticed it before? There’s obviously a thin line between loathing & lusting..

This was a new author for me, and what an absolute treat. From the onset, I was carried along with Kate’s vivid narrative, and quickly linking arm in arm with her characters, especially Hunter, whose protective, authoritarian, Texan charm had me melting too quickly.

This story became more than just a fake fiancee hook. The background to both characters was well established and gave a most welcomed intensity to the storyline.

I was inhaling lungfuls of Hunter, who surpassed any of my recent cowboy scores. He was perfection times heaven, and definitely no Tex-free diet here!

Tess McKenzie is a struggling actress trying to raise enough money with her friends to open up their own theatre. She is independent and strong willed, she gets a job offer that would get her dream off the ground she can't refuse the only problem it is from the man who hates her for destroying his wedding day.

Hunter Dade needs a pretend fiancée for a weekend to impress a business tycoon who better than Tess she is an actress and he wants his revenge on her as well but soon their mutual attraction starts boiling over and they can't keep their hands off each other.

What will happen when the fake engagement ends?

I did enjoy Even the Score it had its hot moments but it could be a bit slow at times. This was my 6th book by Kate Meader I do love her writing style but I do prefer her other series's Hot in the Kitchen and Hot in Chicago.

Want to hate you: Hunter Dade was unceremoniously dumped on his wedding day and it still stings. His wussy bride couldn’t tell him, so she sent her maid of honor, Tess McKenzie, to deliver the news. The same maid of honor who told/nudged the bride into not going through with it because said wussy bride was in love with someone else. Ouch.

Hate to want you: Fast forward several months later, and Hunter runs into Tess when she’s working the tenth circle of hell, otherwise known as dinner theater. Now, Hunter and Tess had clashed from the very first time they met and now that he’s not engaged, well he’d like to kill two birds with one stone - he needs a fake fiancee and he can’t seem to deny that the sparks they’ve been throwing off aren’t of just the hate-you kind.

The scheme: He offers Tess one hundred thousand dollars to pretend to be madly in love with him and that will fund her dream of a local theater in Chicago.

Fantastic dirty talkin’: This is a skill that should be acknowledged - to make sex scenes sexy and dirty without going into cringeworthy territory is not easy to do and Ms. Meader certainly has the gift. Tess and Hunter’s sexual chemistry is on point, and if it were only good for smut, it would still be satisfying, but…

Excellent character development: It’s not just the dirty hot sex, though there's plenty of that. It’s that Tess and Hunter’s connection is well fleshed out through their dialogue and heartfelt conversations. It was great to see that their motivations, as well as the revelations that they have way more in common than they originally thought, add layers to what could be a fairly standard romantic trope of the fake fiancee. Hunter is protective, but his reasons were heartbreaking and believable. Tess’s is protective of her heart, but never to the point where she’s oblivious to the pain she causes. I thought she was a solid heroine, and a great match for Hunter’s fiercely protective hero instincts.

Not alot of hate: If anything, I would have loved to see more angry banter and more tension on that front, because neither one really gave that hate vibe all. Yes, there was tension, but really angry sex? Not really. However, the resolution to that final obstacle gave some closure to all the dangling plot points and ultimately satisfying, so this is very minor quibble in the grand scheme of things.

I have to confess when I saw Even the Score involved a fake engagement, I may have emitted a little groan as it's a trope that has become tired for me of late. And it fills me with glee to admit I was wrong, because this held pretty much everything I could have asked for in a book from the Brazen imprint. Great writing, fabulous characters who had depth and an engaging storyline.

I adored Hunter and Tess. Their chemistry burns from the start and their verbal sparring and dislike of one another brings the type of sexual tension that leaves you hanging off their every word. Both have strong personalities but equally they have their own crosses to bear in life and spending a weekend together not only brings some combustible shenanigans, but makes them both realise that they actually could be pretty good together.

description

Fun, sarcasm and humour is combined with heartfelt emotion and it was this element that surprised me; as this couple begin to open up to one another it cranked it up another notch for me. This was a superb start to Kate Meader's Tall, Dark and Texan series, has left me craving more and I shall certainly be checking out her back catalogue.

4.5 stars.

Even the Score by Kate Meader
Book One of the Tall, Dark, and Texan series

Rating: 5 stars

***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***

Summary (from Goodreads):

He'll make her an offer she can't refuse...

Actress Tess McKenzie is performing in the Tenth Circle of Showbiz Hell-dinner theater. All she really wants is to start a theater of her own. Then Tess receives an offer she can't refuse. She'll get her funding...if she pretends to be the fiancée to her nemesis, Texan property tycoon Hunter Dade. If she's going to pull this off, she'll need all the luck she can get. Break a leg, indeed.

On the verge of a big business deal, Hunter needs to hire a fiancée. He hasn't quite forgiven Tess for ruining his wedding, but when their chemistry goes from combative to straight-up lust, the "no sex" clause in their mutually beneficial arrangement is tested. Which is a serious problem, because if Tess isn't careful, she'll go from breaking a leg to breaking her heart...

What I Liked:

This is definitely one of my favorite Brazen books ever! I don't think I've ever rated a Brazen with five stars, but this one deserves it. It isn't super long - under 300 pages - but it is magnificent. I loved it from start to finish. Certain aspects really jumped out at me, and I urge anyone who enjoys adult contemporary romance and/or Brazen's titles to read this one in two weeks!

Tess is a struggling actress that wants to start her ow theater, on her own terms. When Hunter Dade crashes back into her life with a huge offer, Tess finds it difficult to refuse. Play fiancee for a weekend, and get a one hundred thousand dollar check. But there is history between these two - Tess was Jenna's best friend, Jenna being Hunter's former fiancee and bride-to-be. On Hunter and Jenna's wedding day, Jenna left him at the altar, and Tess was the one that broke it to Hunter. Tess and Hunter don't like each other - but that changes very quickly as things between them unexpectedly heat up...

I had my doubts about this one, initially. The guy is going to fall for his former fiancee's best friend/roommate/maid of honor? That seems odd to me, even if it was a year ago (I think it was a year ago). BUT. Here's what I found out: Hunter is a Texan business, buying properties for a living, and his marriage to Jenna would have been a political-type one. A business arrangement, sort of. Which is why Jenna left him at the altar - she had been cheating on him for a long time. Neither of them loved each other, but Hunter really wanted the marriage, for the connections, as well as to have a socialite wife.

Hunter is a complex guy. He grew up in a trailer park and sometimes still considers himself Texan "white trash", which is why he wanted a socialite wife. But Hunter is know a very rich businessman who buys properties. He's trying to buy a specific property from a man he knows, but he will have to procure a fiancee to convince the man that he is living a stable life (and isn't after the man's wife - which Hunter isn't anyway). I like Hunter a lot - he has a good heart, and he is persistent. Also, he is one sexy guy. Dirty talking, smooth, and super hot. He knows how to turn about the heat! Tall, dark, and Texan, he sure is.

Tess is an actress, and she is smart, funny, and feisty. One thing I absolutely LOVED about Tess is her relentless attitude. Once Hunter "hires" her to be his fiancee, he adds a no-sex clause so that it wouldn't be unethical or he wouldn't have her feeling like he was taking advantage of her in any way. However, Tess has other ideas. She is persistent and keeps teasing him, never taking no for an answer when she knows they both want each other. She knows she has an effect on him, and has no problem flaunting her inner sex goddess. Outer sex goddess?

This book is HOT. Let me tell you, it didn't matter how short this book was - the intimate (and/or dirty) scenes were numerous but unique and scorching. The chemistry between these two are basically on fire, and there is no extinguishing it at any point in the book. *fans self*

Another thing that really jumped out at me was the writing style, and the humor. The way Meader wrote this book had it reading very wittily and snarkily (the latter of which is not a word), and with a fair amount of humor. Witty humor, which is my favorite type of humor. Love!

I love the progression of Hunter and Tess's relationship. This book takes place in a weekend, give or take, but the relationship feels very full and developed. I didn't think there was insta-love present - maybe insta-lust (fine by me), but Tess and Hunter do not love each other in the very beginning. I was rooting for them since the scene in the theater though! And then they go and play engaged... Tess learns a lot about Hunter. And she gets a good look at his past and his inner self-deprecating attitude. But their relationship is a strong one, and the finish of this book is very strong.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Clearly, since I gave it five stars. I don't dish out the five-star rating often, but there was something about this one! I've already reread it several times. *wink*

What I Did Not Like:

I can't think of anything at the moment that was terribly "bad" or not good... like I said in the beginning - you'd think this romance would be weird, given that it's a guy and his ex-fiancee's best friend. But no, it was not weird at all, and a great romance at that!

Would I Recommend It:

I would absolutely recommend this novel to all romance readers! Especially if you enjoy Brazen's books, definitely give this one a shot. This is my first Meader book and I will definitely be looking out for more from her! Especially from this series.

Rating:

5 stars. I love Brazen books, and this one is one that I will be recommending as long as I am able! I am so glad I did not pass on the opportunity to read it. Be sure that you don't either!

Revenge was a dish best served in bed— And Tess McKenzie was about to get a five-course meal.

Actress Tess Mckenzie dreams of starting a theater of her own. Instead she’s performing in dinner theater. But when Hunter Dade, the man who hates her because she ruined his wedding, makes her a offer that will give her the funding she needs, she can’t say no to pretending to be his fiancé for a weekend. She will have to use all her acting skills to pull this off without Hunter finding out how attracted she is to him.

He needed to put a tether on his emotions because if she got him this stirred up after just a few minutes, how the hell was he going to feel spending a weekend with her, pretending she was his?

Texan property tycoon Hunter Dade, needs a fake fiancé, one who can give a winning performance of a couple in love for him to get the property that will give him redemption from his past mistakes. And even though he hasn’t forgiven Tess for ruining his wedding to her friend, he knows she is just the woman he needs to pull this off. So what if fighting with her gets his blood pumping, he will not break the “no sex” clause in their contract. But being around Tess proves to be more than he can take.

Will their mutually beneficial agreement give them both what they want, or will it give them time to finally realise what they didn’t a year ago, what the chemistry between them means?

In just over a week, she’d managed to insinuate herself so far beneath his skin that removing her would require a boatload of anesthetic and a sharp knife.

I loved both Tess and Hunter. They have such skew views about each other, and because of this it took them a while to realise that they actually have a lot in common. Yes she might be from money, he he might be from no money, but both were disillusioned by their mothers at a very young age and both want to make something of themselves. Hunter wants so badly to save everyone, to make up for what happened when he was a young boy, that no one noticed how broken he was, how much he needed saving, until Tess came along.

He wanted to fuck her, possess her, save her— And then he wanted to spend every second of his sorry life making hers better.

I loved the romance. There was so much heat buried beneath their animosity, both wanting to hate the other, but not really managing to pull it off. It caused many heated banter and intense sexual feelings, and I freaking loved it all. I loved seeing these two battle it out, and the banter was so damn sexy! I loved how protective and possessive Hunter was of Tess, even when he was mad at her, and I loved how she wanted to save him from his demons. The sexy times were scorching, I almost melted!! Especially that truck scene!

I also liked Hunter’s business partners, and I can’t wait to read more, especially about Brody and their office manager Emma. There is definitely something between those two…

If you’re looking for a steamy enemies-to-lovers romance, this would be it. This is my first book by this author, and it definitely won’t be my last. A must read.

Slick's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

I'll admit I almost didn't read this book because of the title; I'm tired of reading books that are labeled romance but the characters are together for revenge or to use one another or to "get even." But because I've loved this author's work in the past, I took a chance and I'm really glad I did. Yes this book started out with the two characters doing exactly what I listed above as a reason to be together but it was the way this author turned their situation around and made the reader see that there was way more to them and their relationship. I believed as I watched them go from spitting mad and angry and vengeful towards each other to acceptance, friendship, respect and love and it was beautiful to see.

More than anything Tess McKenzie wants to open her own playhouse/theater with some of her friends she's met along the way in her acting career. Tess' life has not been the fairy tale everyone assumes given that her mother is an Academy Award winning actress. She's had her ups and downs and working dinner theater is definitely a low point especially when she quite literally runs into Hunter Dade the man who blames her for being left at the altar by her best friend.

Hunter can't believe it when he finds Tess working in a dinner theater of all things. There is nothing but animosity between them yet he can't seem to get her off his mind and when he realizes he needs a "fiancée" to secure a land deal he must have he enlists her help promising to fund her playhouse...only stipulation there will be no sex no matter how intense the chemistry is between them.

So many good things about this book it's hard to remember them all! These two had this "hate" between them and set out to basically be horrible to one another but their intense feelings turn into so much more. Despite their original plan the way they had each other's back at every turn was very telling of their true feelings. I loved the way they fought, the way they shared their pasts with one another and the way they were there for each other through the good and the bad especially considering they weren't even suppose to like each other.

Being a lifelong Texan it's often very hard for me to read books with characters from Texas and while some of the secondary characters were a bit over the top and overblown, Hunter was portrayed quite well. Sure there were times he dropped one or two too many darlin's in his speech but his attitude, his intensity, his stubbornness and his white knight complex speaks very true to many men in this state. The fact that Tess really loved so many of his good guy traits was surprising given her very self sufficient nature but he won her over with his charm and his protectiveness of her.

Even The Score is hot and sexy one minute, sweet and funny the next, and just simply a fantastic romance from the first page until the last. Kate Meader once again has written a book I could not put down.

Available now from Entangled Brazen...

She's a down-on-her-luck Chicago actress slumming it in dinner theater. He's an on-the-rise Texan tycoon who climbed out of the dirt and found a beautiful socialite to marry . . . only to have the actress stick her nose in and tell the bride "Run!"

On his wedding day.

A year later, they need each other but the past is never forgotten.

EVEN THE SCORE is the first book in my new Tall, Dark, and Texan series from Entangled's Brazen line, where romance begins in the bedroom... or on the sofa, the private jet, the hood of a pick-up. Whatever works! Because you know what they say: revenge is a meal best served sexy.

This fun and sexy romance is the story of Tess and Hunter. When Hunter's wedding to his socialite fiancée ended in disaster, he blamed Tess the maid of honour for scaring off his bride to be. Encountering Tess months later in a dinner theater where she is the only bright light in an actor's hell he offers her something she can't refuse - a surefire way to earn some money she desperately needs by pretending to be his fiancée to secure a business deal, while at the same time atoning for what he sees as her grievous mistake in wrecking his wedding. But the animosity they had for each other back then was just a mask of their true desire for each other, and now that they've got to pretend to be intimate, it's not long before pretense becomes the real thing. When Hunter realizes that his assessment of Tess has been wrong from the start, will he be man enough to admit his mistakes and secure a real future with her?

I really enjoyed this story! Both of these characters were really likeable right from the start. Tess is a warm, friendly, spirited woman. She's not afraid to speak her mind and tell it like it is, though hurting Hunter had never been something she'd ever planned to do. She'd rather he never know the truth about the woman he planned to marry, even if it means he thinks the worst of her. She never thought she'd be in Hunter's vicinity again, but his deal is too good to pass up. Hunter is equally engaging as this strong, confidant, man's man. Their chemistry sparks from the get-go and before long they are giving in to temptation.

"Hunter," she said breathlessly. Knowing how much he affected her did it for him right there. She nibbled on the corner of his mouth, licked the seam of his lips. He parted to let her in and they kissed each other long and deep, just two people enjoying the hell out of each other. He cupped her ass and lifted her flush, and she ground her tight, sexy body against him. Like she needed the connection as much as he did. Like she needed it to exist.

They share several steamy scenes together ( and whew, this author can write those well!) but at the same time, they start to open up with each other too, sharing deep intimate secrets that lead them both to realize that things between them won't be so easy to quit when their agreement is over.

"Tess, you are fucking beautiful." There was awe in his voice and a reverence in his expression that grabbed her heart hard. No one had ever looked at her like that, like she mattered more than anything. It stole her breath clean away. He moved in, establishing a skin to skin connection. "It's just you and me here. No audience, no critics, no contract, no business deals. Got it?"
She nodded dumbly, not sure what she was agreeing to. Sex, yes. But that request - order- encompassed so much more. It required her to drop more than her dress to the floor.

Both of these characters have some serious baggage from their pasts to overcome if they want to be successful as a couple now. Hunter's relationship with his alcoholic mother shows a vulnerable and caring side of him that Tess finds very compelling. He's a protector through and through and when Hunter realizes that Tess's shows of bravado covers a more vulnerable façade, he is quick to take over this role for her too. I loved how the story played out, how sweet Hunter really is, and how when he realized he was in the wrong, he did what he needed to do to make things right again. It was a really lovely, funny and sexy story and a great introduction for this author into the Brazen world. 5 stars, and I can't wait for the next one in the series!

Pretending stories are one of my very favorite tropes, so when I saw this one I had to read it. It wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

For me, a pretending story is good when the couple are forced to act like they love each other and discover there's some serious heat when they tough. The trying to resist each other is part of the fun. This one didn't feel that way to me. They gave in early and then tried to back track. It just wasn't right to me.

I did love these characters. Hunter is a self-made man. Growing up in a trailer park with an alcoholic mother, no know father and a sister that...well you'll need to read it for that part. But he chose to work hard and get out of that life. And he has the protective streak as wide as Texas. He knows Tess as the best friend to his bride in the wedding that didn't happen. Yeah, Tess may have talked the bride out of marrying Hunter at the last minute. So no love lost here, right. Really, though, it was kinda a marriage of connivance and Hunter was more upset about the business deal that went wrong with it. I really couldn't reconcile him wanting to marry Jenna that way and who I learned him to be. But I did love him.

Tess doesn't really get her side of that wedding story out until the end. I kinda didn't like her until I knew the why of it. But she's a strong women who has this inner sexpot. She's down for this acting job playing Hunter fiance but she wants some action too. Once she quit hating on Hunter and started trying to protect him as much as he protected her, I finally liked her.

Here's my real issue with this book. There are all these pretty private conversations that happen in front of groups of people between Hunter and Tess. They're either talking in each others ear or whispering low. I just found it so odd. How many people have LONG whispered conversations about things they don't want others to hear IN FRONT of those people. It wasn't a phrase or a word, no it was a conversation. It just kept happening too. People. Go in another room or wait till later. You do not do this. AND it's more likely that someone will hear you but they didn't. Strange.

Anyway, if the pretending issue I had isn't a problem for you and you can set aside that little whisper conversation issue, then you probably like this one. It's sexy hot and has a lot of story. It just wasn't quite as good as I was thinking it would be.

I'm struggling with reading at the moment....too many juggling balls in the air at once and 'reading time' is suffering.

Sooo......this book is probably way more cohesive than it seemed to me because I had to keep putting it down to do 'adulting' and other boring things like feed my family.

Hunter Dade (bad name) is a trailer park boy grown up to be a billionaire (aren't they just a dime a dozen in book world!!). He is about to marry the right girl, Amy, connected and beautiful, but boring....when her maid of honour talks her out of it. Stranded at the altar=very bad day.

Fast forward twelve months and Hunter runs into said MOH Tess, daughter to a mega star, but a struggling stage actor herself. Revenge in mind, Hunter talks her into an acting job, as his fake fiancé.

Tess thinks this is a great opportunity to apologise to Hunt and hopefully nab him for herself. Ok....not what a good friend would do but stick with it.

Shenanigans ensue. (Plot twist and regulation misunderstanding were a bit too easily resolved, but that's just me.)

I enjoyed this book in parts but I found the flipping and flopping between being hot for each other or trying to exact revenge a bit flimsy and at times confusing. Again this could have been my lack of solid reading time.

Or maybe I just don't have a thing for Texans??

Even the Score is the first book in Kate Meader's new Tall, Dark and Texan series. This book amused me practically from the very beginning. It's one of those very well written, middle of the road books for me that I completely enjoy. If you're looking for entertainment, it definitely does not and will not disappoint you.

From the get go, Tess had me cracking you. You meet here while she's doing murder mystery dinner theater and having to prance around in a French maid costume.. that she hates. The job, because thats exactly what it is for the struggling actress, is a way to make ends meet so that she can save money to open her own theater company. What she doesn't expect is to practically fall on her teetering heels into the hands of a man who hates her, and blames all his failings from a year before on her.

Hunter wants the business deal he's working on to go through, but he also wants Tess. (Not that he'll come out and admit it. He's still blaming her for ruining his wedding day.) So he offers her a deal of his own, even has a contract drawn up. She plays his fiancee for one weekend, and he'll fund her new theater. He also want revenge though, and what better way to get that then to make Tess want him?

"Revenge was a dish best served in bed - And Tess McKenzie was about to get a five-course meal." - Hunter, Even the Score by Kate Meader

Things are never quite so simple however because these who are like fire and ice. They've been arguing since practically the moment they met and it's electric. People around them don't know if they are going to come to blows half the time, or if they should grab a hose. Yeah.. these two are hot, and Hunter is mad at Tess for all the wrong reasons, he just doesn't know it.

" The air snap-crackled-popped between them." - Even the Score by Kate Meader

The dynamic between these hero and heroine is pretty on point. I also liked the co-stars, a lot. Especially Hunter's business partners and friends. Oh and Buffy with her big Texas hair. ;) I can't pinpoint anything I didn't like about the book, the story and plot are great. I'm afraid to share too much about it because it'll give away far too many spoilers. That being said, I'm going to leave it here and just say I would recommend this book to anyone. If you love romance, you will like this story.

Confession time...I’ve known Even the Score was coming out for awhile now. Being a fan of Kate Meader, I couldn’t wait. I’ve heard bits and pieces about the story. From those bits and pieces, I was concerned I wasn’t going to like the heroine, Tess McKenzie. I mean come on, the woman convinced her friend to not marry the hero, Hunter Dade on their wedding day. The man was actually left at the altar in front of hundreds of people. That’s a little hard to get over.

Kate Meader brings her classic humor which I love her for to Even the Score. She also brings the heat which I think is more than she usually writes. I went into reading this story with a preconceived idea of what the characters were like. I was totally wrong and I’m so happy for that.

Tess McKenzie is an underpaid stage actress (read broke), chasing her dream of opening her own theater company. She refuses to take the easy way out and ask her mega-star mother to help her. She’s brass, sassy, and has her own dirty mouth. I totally love her! But for her, she’s been playing a part her whole life and she isn’t too sure who she really is.

Hunter Dade is an alpha through and through. He’s a sweet and dirty talker with a protective streak that’s a mile long. For all the good in him, Hunter is running from his past and has regret eating him up. I can't remember the last time a character had my heart breaking for them.

Hunter needs to purchase a piece of property in Texas, but in order to do so, he has to show he’s in a committed relationship. At the offhanded suggestion by one of his business partners, Hunter offers Tess the money she needs for her company if she plays the part of his fiancee for a weekend. With explosive tension and serious chemistry between them, these two are like longhorns circling each other and preparing for battle.

Hunter has a violent and tragic past which rules his life. Tess’ past isn’t all smiley faces and hearts like people think. Together they bring out the best in each other, resulting in fake feelings becoming a little too real. Tess and Hunter show that when you set out for payback and to even the score, you get more than you bargained for.

*The book contains violent flashbacks.*

2.5 stars. The way that this book was written just didn't work for me. I listened to the audiobook, so that is likely the reason for my problems, but I had trouble following the storyline. There seemed to be a lot of random jumps from one event to the next without smooth or clear transitions.

I also really disliked the hero of this book and how he behaved towards the heroine. I felt like she forgave him too easily at the end.

Safe; H and h both mention being celibate for a bit, H was engaged to h's friend, but the h broke up their wedding. H says that he was waiting until after marriage to have sex with the friend - so they were never intimate. No cheating, no scenes with OM/OW, slight OW drama, no OM drama.

TW: attempted sexual assault, mentions of child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, alcoholism

I liked that this book avoided a lot of the silly pitfalls that catch so many romance reads. Where Tess and Hunter could have been mired in family drama or denying their feelings they both did a good job of realistically assessing where they stood and moving forward accordingly.

Hunter doesn’t like Tess because she broke up his wedding. But when he needs an actress to play his fiancé she falls in his lap. They spend their fake-engaged weekend realizing there’s a thin line between hate and love.

It was easy to read and relatively interesting. Somewhat steamy. There was dramatic issues - but they weren’t overpowering. It was going to be a 4 Star Read, but I thought the cataclysmic moment was snort-worthy. A near miss.

I loved the backstory for both these characters, as well as their shared history. It was great that Meader made me wait to learn certain things because it amplified the impact of those fact. This leaned more erotic than what I prefer. I like a bit more story than sex, but I did throughly enjoy the story parts of the book.

Acting my ass! There is no way that an attraction as intense as the one searing the pages of Kate Meader's Even The Score can be anything less than soul-shatteringly, heart-stoppingly, panty-soakingly, authentic.
This blue collar Texan, and his blue blooded "lady of the stage" may begin their "fiancee farce" under terms that are anything but 100%...shall we say...above the belt. But it soon becomes very clear that Tess McKenzie and Hunter Dade share a passion that is REAL HOT!

Not one to leave even the smallest detail unaddressed, authoress Meader hits readers with a very intense and interconnected back story involving both Hunter and Tess. As well as very personal and heart-wrenching family dramas, designed to further endear the couple to each other and to their readers.

Though the scenes transition seamlessly, and dialog flows as easily as water from a fresh mountain spring. The ever present desire that these two share is what truly makes this novel work.
Nothing about this novel reads over done or forced, and the pacing is perfect for reading in one sitting.

Even The Score is the first novel in the Tall Dark, and Texan series, and this reader can wait to read more!

This was so great! Everything I love in a story was in this plus the edition of a super sexy cowboy. Awesome read!

I loved both Tess and Hunter and the friction between the two. Characters that bicker and have great animosity are a personal favorite of mine. It created amazing chemistry between them and a lot of heat. I loved their growing connection and the development of them coming together.

I thought there was an excellent pace and it was well developed. It was entertaining with funny parts and sweet, sexy parts plus a bit of drama and emotion. It was just a fantastic and fun read. Let's not forget it was super hot! It was sensual, passionate, and steamy! Sexy cowboy is an understatement and I loved his dirty talking mouth.

Even the Score is just one of those books that's totally enjoyable. The right blend of everything to keep you interested and on your toes. Solid read from start to finish with great characters. Light, sexy, fun, and hot! Loved it!

Title: Even the Score

Series: Tall, Dark, and Texan book #1

Author: Kate Meader

My Thoughts:

3.5 stars! I liked it! This book was exactly what I needed! A yummy alpha cowboy with manners and a self-confidences that just oozes from him - in most aspects of his life. Hunter has worked to pull himself out of a dirt poor background and become the wealthy self-sufficient man that he is today. But he has never had the love of his mother the way that children should.

Tess's mom is Hollywood royalty but that doesn't mean that she had the love and affection that a child should have growing up.

These 2 come together in a whirlwind of arguments and undeniable chemistry and a bargain is struck that will give them both what they want if they can survive one weekend together and convince their host that they are madly in love!

This read started a little iffy to me... I wasn't clicking with Tess at first but as you start to learn about her mom and the issues they have I felt my compassion for her rising. The misunderstanding as to why Tess encourages Jenna to call off the wedding was a little drawn out but it made the wrap-up at the end that much sweeter... this was an easy read and an easy way to spend a few hours on a rainy afternoon.

Week 5 of Shameless brings me to a cowboy romance. I'm mixed about this story. It started out rather difficult to read because I did not realize it was going to be a cowboy theme. I am not a fan of the cowboy genre. Still, it I continued the story. Initial impressions are not so good. I did not like Tess McKenzie much. She does come across as a shallow poor little rich girl. She is not likeable because I'm not fond of this type of female. She is annoying and holier than thou in a smug kind of way.

Surprisingly, I ended up liking the cowboy, Hunter Dade. Hunter is a man I can respect. He came out of very poor background and formed out of tragedy. He is a self made man with demons that drive him. Sometimes it is his mother who is a broken woman heaping out abuse to her son. This is where the story turned for me. I really admired Hunter and from a character perspective, he's amazing. Ms. Meader definitely creates a character who is swoon worthy. The question is, why is he interested in Tess? Tess has mommy issues but really, they are nothing like what Hunter experienced. Yes, yes, I understand there are no "whose had a worse" life competition. And yes, Tess's issue is crushing. Still based on how Hunter survived and made a difference in this world, it seems he has it together and Tess is just running away and doing not much with her life.

The romance between the two falls flat for me because I can not get over how Tess isn't worthy of a great guy like Hunter. He's marrying down. Yes, there are some things she does that shows she can be a protective loyal friend, but it still seems just skin deep. She needs more growth to catch up with Hunter. By the end of this story, I'm resigned to the fact that love sees no reason as Hunter falls deeply in love with Tess and treats her way too well.

If this series is going to be about Hunter and the men he knows, it will be interesting. These men are dream fantasy material. The women... I hope they will not all be a mess like Tess. The typical ne'er-do-well female who let one moment in time allow them to decide to put their life on hold and drag them down. This romance is recommended to readers who enjoy cowboys riding in to save the day.
